Vishnu's Speech

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.55.1)

दक्ष उवाच । देवदेव हरे विष्णो दीनबन्धो कृपानिधे । मम रक्षा विधातव्या भवता साध्वरस्य च

dakṣa uvāca | devadeva hare viṣṇo dīnabandho kṛpānidhe | mama rakṣā vidhātavyā bhavatā sādhvarasya ca

Daksha said: "O God of gods, Hari, Vishnu, friend of the helpless, treasury of compassion! You must grant protection to me, and to this sacrifice."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.55.2)

रक्षकस्त्वं मखस्यैव मखकर्मा मखात्मकः । कृपा विधेया यज्ञस्य भङ्गो भवतु न प्रभो

rakṣakastvaṁ makhasyaiva makhakarmā makhātmakaḥ | kṛpā vidheyā yajñasya bhaṅgo bhavatu na prabho

"You are the very protector of the sacrifice, its performer, its very self — show your compassion, O Lord, and let this sacrifice not be broken."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.55.3)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्थं बहुविधां दक्षः कृत्वा विज्ञप्तिमादरात् । पपात पादयोस्तस्य भयव्याकुलमानसः

brahmovāca | itthaṁ bahuvidhāṁ dakṣaḥ kṛtvā vijñaptimādarāt | papāta pādayostasya bhayavyākulamānasaḥ

Brahma said: "Having thus made this manifold entreaty with all reverence, Daksha, his mind distraught with fear, fell at Vishnu's feet."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.55.4)

उत्थाप्य तं ततो विष्णुर्दक्षं विक्लिन्नमानसम् । श्रुत्वा च तस्य तद्वाक्यं कुमतेरस्मरच्छिवम्

utthāpya taṁ tato viṣṇurdakṣaṁ viklinnamānasam | śrutvā ca tasya tadvākyaṁ kumaterasmaracchivam

"Vishnu then raised up that Daksha, his mind utterly melted with fear, and, having heard the words of that man of poor judgment, called Shiva to mind."

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.55.5)

स्मृत्वा शिवं महेशानं स्वप्रभुं परमेश्वरम् । अवदच्छिवतत्त्वज्ञो दक्षं सम्बोधयन्हरिः

smṛtvā śivaṁ maheśānaṁ svaprabhuṁ parameśvaram | avadacchivatattvajño dakṣaṁ sambodhayanhariḥ

"Having remembered Shiva, the great sovereign Lord, his own Master, Hari, who knew the truth of Shiva, then spoke, instructing Daksha."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.55.6)

हरिरुवाच । शृणु दक्ष प्रवक्ष्यामि तत्त्वतः शृणु मे वचः । सर्वथा ते हितकरं महामन्त्रसुखप्रदम्

hariruvāca | śṛṇu dakṣa pravakṣyāmi tattvataḥ śṛṇu me vacaḥ | sarvathā te hitakaraṁ mahāmantrasukhapradam

Hari said: "Listen, Daksha, I shall tell you the truth — hear my words, wholly for your own good, granting the joy of the highest counsel."

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.55.7)

अवज्ञा हि कृता दक्ष त्वया तत्त्वमजानता । सकलाधीश्वरस्यैव शङ्करस्य परात्मनः

avajñā hi kṛtā dakṣa tvayā tattvamajānatā | sakalādhīśvarasyaiva śaṅkarasya parātmanaḥ

"You, Daksha, not knowing his true nature, have shown disrespect to Shankara, the Lord of all, the Supreme Self."

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.55.8)

ईश्वरावज्ञया सर्वं कार्यं भवति सर्वथा । विफलं केवलं नैव विपत्तिश्च पदे पदे

īśvarāvajñayā sarvaṁ kāryaṁ bhavati sarvathā | viphalaṁ kevalaṁ naiva vipattiśca pade pade

"By disrespect toward the Lord, every undertaking becomes not merely fruitless in every way, but calamity follows at every single step."

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.55.9)

अपूज्या यत्र पूज्यन्ते पूजनीयो न पूज्यते । त्रीणि तत्र भविष्यन्ति दारिद्र्यं मरणं भयम्

apūjyā yatra pūjyante pūjanīyo na pūjyate | trīṇi tatra bhaviṣyanti dāridryaṁ maraṇaṁ bhayam

"Where the unworthy are honored and the truly worthy is not honored, three things shall follow there: poverty, death, and fear."

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.55.10)

तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन माननीयो वृषध्वजः । अमानितान्महेशाच्च महद्भयमुपस्थितम्

tasmātsarvaprayatnena mānanīyo vṛṣadhvajaḥ | amānitānmaheśācca mahadbhayamupasthitam

"Therefore the Bull-bannered One must be honored with every effort; and from failing to honor Mahesha, this great danger has now arisen."

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.55.11)

अद्यापि न वयं सर्वे प्रभवः प्रभवामहे । भवतो दुर्नयेनैव मया सत्यमुदीर्यते

adyāpi na vayaṁ sarve prabhavaḥ prabhavāmahe | bhavato durnayenaiva mayā satyamudīryate

"Even now, all of us together lack the power to prevail — this truth I speak to you plainly, on account of your own misconduct."

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.55.12)

ब्रह्मोवाच । विष्णोस्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा दक्षश्चिन्तापरोऽभवत् । विवर्णवदनो भूत्वा तूष्णीमासीद्भुवि स्थितः

brahmovāca | viṣṇostadvacanaṁ śrutvā dakṣaścintāparo'bhavat | vivarṇavadano bhūtvā tūṣṇīmāsīdbhuvi sthitaḥ

Brahma said: "Hearing this word from Vishnu, Daksha fell into deep anxiety; his face grew pale, and he sat upon the ground in silence."

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.55.13)

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे वीरभद्रः सैन्यसमन्वितः । अगच्छदध्वरं रुद्रप्रेरितो गणनायकः

etasminnantare vīrabhadraḥ sainyasamanvitaḥ | agacchadadhvaraṁ rudraprerito gaṇanāyakaḥ

"Meanwhile Virabhadra, together with his army, that leader of the ganas sent forth by Rudra, drew near to the sacrifice."

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.55.14)

पृष्ठे केचित्समायाता गगने केचिदागताः । दिशश्च विदिशः सर्वे समावृत्य तथापरे

pṛṣṭhe kecitsamāyātā gagane kecidāgatāḥ | diśaśca vidiśaḥ sarve samāvṛtya tathāpare

"Some came from behind him, some arrived through the sky, and others still, encircling every quarter and intermediate quarter."

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.55.15)

शर्वाज्ञया गणाः शूरा निर्भया रुद्रविक्रमाः । असङ्ख्याः सिंहनादान्वै कुर्वन्तो वीरसत्तमाः

śarvājñayā gaṇāḥ śūrā nirbhayā rudravikramāḥ | asaṅkhyāḥ siṁhanādānvai kurvanto vīrasattamāḥ

"By Sharva's command, those fearless heroic hosts, of Rudra's own valor, innumerable, those foremost of heroes, roared like lions."

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.55.16)

तेन नादेन महता नादितं भुवनत्रयम् । रजसा चावृतं व्योम तमसा चावृता दिशः

tena nādena mahatā nāditaṁ bhuvanatrayam | rajasā cāvṛtaṁ vyoma tamasā cāvṛtā diśaḥ

"By that mighty roar the three worlds resounded; the sky was covered with dust, and the directions shrouded in darkness."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.55.17)

सप्तद्वीपान्विता पृथ्वी चचालाति भयाकुला । सशैलकानना तत्र चुक्षुभुः सकलाब्धयः

saptadvīpānvitā pṛthvī cacālāti bhayākulā | saśailakānanā tatra cukṣubhuḥ sakalābdhayaḥ

"The earth, with all its seven continents, trembled in great terror; and, with its mountains and forests, every ocean there grew turbulent."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.55.18)

एवम्भूतं च तत्सैन्यं लोकक्षयकरं महत् । दृष्ट्वा च विस्मिताः सर्वे बभूवुरमरादयः

evambhūtaṁ ca tatsainyaṁ lokakṣayakaraṁ mahat | dṛṣṭvā ca vismitāḥ sarve babhūvuramarādayaḥ

"Seeing that vast army, so terrible, capable of destroying the very worlds, all the immortals and the rest were struck with wonder."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.55.19)

सैन्योद्योगमथालोक्य दक्षश्चासृङ्मुखाकुलः । दण्डवत्पतितो विष्णुं सकलत्रोऽभ्यभाषत

sainyodyogamathālokya dakṣaścāsṛṅmukhākulaḥ | daṇḍavatpatito viṣṇuṁ sakalatro'bhyabhāṣata

"Seeing the advance of that army, Daksha, his face streaked with blood, fell prostrate like a rod before Vishnu, and, together with his wife, spoke to him."

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.55.20)

दक्ष उवाच । भवद्बलेनैव मया यज्ञः प्रारम्भितो महान् । सत्कर्मसिद्धये विष्णो प्रमाणं त्वं महाप्रभो

dakṣa uvāca | bhavadbalenaiva mayā yajñaḥ prārambhito mahān | satkarmasiddhaye viṣṇo pramāṇaṁ tvaṁ mahāprabho

Daksha said: "By your power alone did I begin this great sacrifice; for the accomplishment of righteous deeds, O Vishnu, great Lord, you are my very authority."

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.55.21)

विष्णो त्वं कर्मणां साक्षी यज्ञानां प्रतिपालकः । धर्मस्य वेदगर्भस्य ब्रह्मणस्त्वं महाप्रभो

viṣṇo tvaṁ karmaṇāṁ sākṣī yajñānāṁ pratipālakaḥ | dharmasya vedagarbhasya brahmaṇastvaṁ mahāprabho

"O Vishnu, you are the witness of all deeds, the protector of sacrifices, of righteousness, of the very womb of the Veda, and of Brahman itself, great Lord."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.55.22)

तस्माद्रक्षा विधातव्या यज्ञस्यास्य मम प्रभो । त्वदन्यः कः समर्थोऽस्ति यतस्त्वं सकलप्रभुः

tasmādrakṣā vidhātavyā yajñasyāsya mama prabho | tvadanyaḥ kaḥ samartho'sti yatastvaṁ sakalaprabhuḥ

"Therefore, O Lord, protection must be granted to this sacrifice of mine — who else besides you is capable of it, since you are the Lord of all?"

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.55.23)

ब्रह्मोवाच । दक्षस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा विष्णुर्दीनतरं तदा । अवोचद् बोधयंस्तं वै शिवतत्त्वपराङ्मुखम्

brahmovāca | dakṣasya vacanaṁ śrutvā viṣṇurdīnataraṁ tadā | avocad bodhayaṁstaṁ vai śivatattvaparāṅmukham

Brahma said: "Hearing Daksha's words, Vishnu then, in the most humbled manner, spoke, instructing that man who was turned away from the truth of Shiva."

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.55.24)

विष्णुरुवाच । मया रक्षा विधातव्या तव यज्ञस्य दक्ष वै । ख्यातो मम पणः सत्यो धर्मस्य परिपालनम्

viṣṇuruvāca | mayā rakṣā vidhātavyā tava yajñasya dakṣa vai | khyāto mama paṇaḥ satyo dharmasya paripālanam

Vishnu said: "It is true, Daksha, that I ought to grant protection to your sacrifice — my vow is renowned as true: the upholding of dharma."

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.55.25)

तत्सत्यं तु त्वयोक्तं हि किं तत्तस्य व्यतिक्रमः । शृणु त्वं वच्म्यहं दक्ष क्रूरबुद्धिं त्यजाधुना

tatsatyaṁ tu tvayoktaṁ hi kiṁ tattasya vyatikramaḥ | śṛṇu tvaṁ vacmyahaṁ dakṣa krūrabuddhiṁ tyajādhunā

"What you have said is indeed true — but what would count as its transgression here? Listen, Daksha, I shall tell you: abandon now your cruel resolve."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.55.26)

नैमिषेऽनिमिषक्षेत्रे यज्जातं वृत्तमद्भुतम् । तत् किं न स्मर्यते दक्ष विस्मृतं किं कुबुद्धिना

naimiṣe'nimiṣakṣetre yajjātaṁ vṛttamadbhutam | tat kiṁ na smaryate dakṣa vismṛtaṁ kiṁ kubuddhinā

"That wondrous event which took place at Naimisha, the sacred, unblinking field — why is it not remembered, Daksha? Has your evil mind forgotten it?"

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.55.27)

रुद्रकोपाच्च को ह्यत्र समर्थो रक्षणे तव । न यस्याभिमतं दक्ष यस्त्वां रक्षति दुर्मतिः

rudrakopācca ko hyatra samartho rakṣaṇe tava | na yasyābhimataṁ dakṣa yastvāṁ rakṣati durmatiḥ

"Who indeed here is capable of protecting you from Rudra's wrath? Whoever tries to protect you against his very will, Daksha, is a fool."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.55.28)

किं कर्म किमकर्मेति तन्न पश्यसि दुर्मते । समर्थं केवलं कर्म न भविष्यति सर्वदा

kiṁ karma kimakarmeti tanna paśyasi durmate | samarthaṁ kevalaṁ karma na bhaviṣyati sarvadā

"You do not see, O evil-minded one, what is true action and what is inaction — mere ritual action by itself will never be sufficient."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.55.29)

स्वकर्म विद्धि तद्येन समर्थत्वेन जायते । न त्वन्यः कर्मणो दाता शं भवेदीश्वरं विना

svakarma viddhi tadyena samarthatvena jāyate | na tvanyaḥ karmaṇo dātā śaṁ bhavedīśvaraṁ vinā

"Know that one's own action bears fruit only through that by which its efficacy arises — there is no giver of the welfare that comes from action other than the Lord."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.55.30)

ईश्वरस्य च यो भक्त्या शान्तस्तद्गतमानसः । कर्मणो हि फलं तस्य प्रयच्छति तदा शिवः

īśvarasya ca yo bhaktyā śāntastadgatamānasaḥ | karmaṇo hi phalaṁ tasya prayacchati tadā śivaḥ

"And he who, through devotion to the Lord, is at peace, his mind fixed upon Him — to him alone does Shiva then grant the fruit of his actions."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.55.31)

केवलं ज्ञानमाश्रित्य निरीश्वरपरा नराः । निरयं ते च गच्छन्ति कल्पकोटिशतानि च

kevalaṁ jñānamāśritya nirīśvaraparā narāḥ | nirayaṁ te ca gacchanti kalpakoṭiśatāni ca

"Men who take refuge in mere knowledge alone, given over to godlessness, go to hell for hundreds of millions of world-ages."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.55.32)

पुनः कर्ममयैः पाशैर्बद्धा जन्मनि जन्मनि । निरयेषु प्रपच्यन्ते केवलं कर्मरूपिणः

punaḥ karmamayaiḥ pāśairbaddhā janmani janmani | nirayeṣu prapacyante kevalaṁ karmarūpiṇaḥ

"Bound again by the fetters made of their own deeds, birth after birth, those who are mere action without devotion are made to suffer in the hells."

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.55.33)

अयं रुद्रगणाधीशो वीरभद्रोऽरिमर्दनः । रुद्रकोपाग्निसम्भूतः समायातोऽध्वराङ्गणे

ayaṁ rudragaṇādhīśo vīrabhadro'rimardanaḥ | rudrakopāgnisambhūtaḥ samāyāto'dhvarāṅgaṇe

"This lord of Rudra's ganas, Virabhadra, crusher of foes, born from the very fire of Rudra's wrath, has arrived at the courtyard of your sacrifice."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.55.34)

अयमस्मद्विनाशार्थमागतोऽस्ति न संशयः । अशक्यमस्य नास्त्येव किमप्यस्तु तु वस्तुतः

ayamasmadvināśārthamāgato'sti na saṁśayaḥ | aśakyamasya nāstyeva kimapyastu tu vastutaḥ

"He has come, without doubt, for our very destruction; for him, in truth, nothing whatsoever is impossible."

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.55.35)

प्रज्वाल्यास्मानयं सर्वान् ध्रुवमेव महाप्रभुः । ततः प्रशान्तहृदयो भविष्यति न संशयः

prajvālyāsmānayaṁ sarvān dhruvameva mahāprabhuḥ | tataḥ praśāntahṛdayo bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ

"Having set us all ablaze, this great lord shall surely then, without doubt, become peaceful of heart."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.55.36)

श्रीमहादेवशपथं समुल्लङ्घ्य भ्रमान्मया । यतः स्थितं ततः प्राप्यं मया दुःखं त्वया सह

śrīmahādevaśapathaṁ samullaṅghya bhramānmayā | yataḥ sthitaṁ tataḥ prāpyaṁ mayā duḥkhaṁ tvayā saha

"Since I, through my own delusion, transgressed the oath sworn upon the glorious Mahadeva, whatever follows from that, I must now receive, together with you."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.55.37)

शक्तिर्मम तु नास्त्येव दक्षाद्यैतन्निवारणे । शपथोल्लङ्घनादेव शिवद्रोही यतोऽस्म्यहम्

śaktirmama tu nāstyeva dakṣādyaitannivāraṇe | śapathollaṅghanādeva śivadrohī yato'smyaham

"I truly have no power, Daksha, to avert this now — for by the very transgression of that oath, I myself have become an enemy of Shiva."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.55.38)

कालत्रयेऽपि न यतो महेशद्रोहिणां सुखम् । ततोऽवश्यं मया प्राप्तं दुःखमद्य त्वया सह

kālatraye'pi na yato maheśadrohiṇāṁ sukham | tato'vaśyaṁ mayā prāptaṁ duḥkhamadya tvayā saha

"Since, across all three times, there is never happiness for the enemies of Mahesha, I must therefore inevitably now share this suffering with you."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.55.39)

सुदर्शनाभिधं चक्रमेतस्मिन्न लगिष्यति । शैवचक्रमिदं यस्मादशैवलयकारणम्

sudarśanābhidhaṁ cakrametasminna lagiṣyati | śaivacakramidaṁ yasmādaśaivalayakāraṇam

"My discus named Sudarshana will not even engage against him — for this is itself a Shaiva discus, the very cause of dissolution for whatever is opposed to Shiva."

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.55.40)

विनापि वीरभद्रेण नामैतच्चक्रमैश्वरम् । हत्वा गमिष्यत्यधुना सत्वरं हरसन्निधौ

vināpi vīrabhadreṇa nāmaitaccakramaiśvaram | hatvā gamiṣyatyadhunā satvaraṁ harasannidhau

"Indeed, even without Virabhadra, this very discus of the Lord, having struck us down, will now go swiftly into Hara's own presence."

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.55.41)

शैवं शपथमुल्लङ्घ्य स्थितं मां चक्रमीदृशम् । असंहत्यैव सहसा कृपयैव स्थिरं परम्

śaivaṁ śapathamullaṅghya sthitaṁ māṁ cakramīdṛśam | asaṁhatyaiva sahasā kṛpayaiva sthiraṁ param

"I stand here having transgressed the Shaiva oath — such a discus as this remains with me, steadfast, not by any binding force, but by mercy alone, and by that alone."

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.55.42)

अतः परमिदं चक्रमपि न स्थास्यति ध्रुवम् । गमिष्यत्यधुना शीघ्रं ज्वालामालासमाकुलम्

ataḥ paramidaṁ cakramapi na sthāsyati dhruvam | gamiṣyatyadhunā śīghraṁ jvālāmālāsamākulam

"Beyond this point, therefore, even this discus will surely not remain — it shall now go swiftly, wrapped in garlands of flame."

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.55.43)

वीरभद्रः पूजितोऽपि शीघ्रमस्माभिरादरात् । महाक्रोधसमाक्रान्तो नास्मान् संरक्षयिष्यति

vīrabhadraḥ pūjito'pi śīghramasmābhirādarāt | mahākrodhasamākrānto nāsmān saṁrakṣayiṣyati

"Even if we swiftly and reverently honor Virabhadra, overwhelmed as he is by great fury, he will not spare us."

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.55.44)

अकाण्डप्रलयोऽस्माकमागतोऽद्य हि हा हहा । हा हा बत तवेदानीं नाशोऽस्माकमुपस्थितः

akāṇḍapralayo'smākamāgato'dya hi hā hahā | hā hā bata tavedānīṁ nāśo'smākamupasthitaḥ

"An untimely dissolution has come upon us today — alas, alas! Alas, alas indeed — our destruction, O Daksha, is now truly at hand."

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.55.45)

शरण्योऽस्माकमधुना नास्त्येव हि जगत्त्रये । शङ्करद्रोहिणो लोके कः शरण्यो भविष्यति

śaraṇyo'smākamadhunā nāstyeva hi jagattraye | śaṅkaradrohiṇo loke kaḥ śaraṇyo bhaviṣyati

"There is now truly no protector for us anywhere in the three worlds — who in this world could ever be a refuge for the enemies of Shankara?"

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.55.46)

तनुनाशेऽपि सम्प्राप्यास्तैश्चापि यमयातनाः । ता नैव शक्यते सोढुं बहुदुःखप्रदायिनीः

tanunāśe'pi samprāpyāstaiścāpi yamayātanāḥ | tā naiva śakyate soḍhuṁ bahuduḥkhapradāyinīḥ

"Even beyond the destruction of the body, they must also endure the torments of Yama — sufferings so full of manifold pain that they cannot possibly be borne."

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.55.47)

शिवद्रोहिणमालोक्य दष्टदन्तो यमः स्वयम् । तप्ततैलकटाहेषु पातयत्येव नान्यथा

śivadrohiṇamālokya daṣṭadanto yamaḥ svayam | taptatailakaṭāheṣu pātayatyeva nānyathā

"Seeing an enemy of Shiva, Yama himself, gnashing his teeth, casts him into cauldrons of boiling oil — never otherwise."

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.55.48)

गन्तुमेवाहमुद्युक्तंः सर्वथा शपथोत्तरम् । तथापि न गतः शीघ्रं दुष्टसंसर्गपापतः

gantumevāhamudyuktaṁḥ sarvathā śapathottaram | tathāpi na gataḥ śīghraṁ duṣṭasaṁsargapāpataḥ

"I was indeed wholly intent on going, as the oath now demands of me — and yet I have not gone swiftly, held back by the sin of this evil company."

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.55.49)

यदद्य क्रियतेऽस्माभिः पलायनमितस्तदा । शार्वो नाकर्षकः शस्त्रैरस्मानाकर्षयिष्यति

yadadya kriyate'smābhiḥ palāyanamitastadā | śārvo nākarṣakaḥ śastrairasmānākarṣayiṣyati

"And if we should now attempt to flee from here, Sharva's own irresistible weapons will drag us back regardless."

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.55.50)

स्वर्गे वा भुवि पाताले यत्र कुत्रापि वा यतः । श्रीवीरभद्रशस्त्राणां गमनं न हि दुर्लभम्

svarge vā bhuvi pātāle yatra kutrāpi vā yataḥ | śrīvīrabhadraśastrāṇāṁ gamanaṁ na hi durlabham

"For whether in heaven, on earth, in the netherworld, or wherever else — the weapons of the glorious Virabhadra find their way there without any difficulty."

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.55.51)

यावन्तश्च गणाः सन्ति श्रीरुद्रस्य त्रिशूलिनः । तावतामपि सर्वेषां शक्तिरेतादृशी ध्रुवम्

yāvantaśca gaṇāḥ santi śrīrudrasya triśūlinaḥ | tāvatāmapi sarveṣāṁ śaktiretādṛśī dhruvam

"And however many ganas belong to the glorious, trident-bearing Rudra — every single one among them all surely carries a power just like this."

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.55.52)

श्रीकालभैरवः काश्यां नखाग्रेणैव लीलया । पुरा शिरश्च चिच्छेद पञ्चमं ब्रह्मणो ध्रुवम्

śrīkālabhairavaḥ kāśyāṁ nakhāgreṇaiva līlayā | purā śiraśca ciccheda pañcamaṁ brahmaṇo dhruvam

"Once, in Kashi, the glorious Kalabhairava, with the mere tip of his nail, playfully and without doubt severed the fifth head of Brahma himself."

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.55.53)

एतदुक्त्वा स्थितो विष्णुरतित्रस्तमुखाम्बुजः । वीरभद्रोऽपि सम्प्राप तदैवाध्वरमण्डपम्

etaduktvā sthito viṣṇuratitrastamukhāmbujaḥ | vīrabhadro'pi samprāpa tadaivādhvaramaṇḍapam

"Having said this, Vishnu stood there, his lotus-face utterly overcome with terror — and at that very moment Virabhadra himself arrived at the sacrificial pavilion."

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.55.54)

एवं ब्रुवति गोविन्द आगतं सैन्यसागरम् । वीरभद्रेण सहितं ददृशुश्च सुरादयः

evaṁ bruvati govinda āgataṁ sainyasāgaram | vīrabhadreṇa sahitaṁ dadṛśuśca surādayaḥ

"As Govinda was speaking thus, the gods and the others beheld that ocean-like army, arrived there together with Virabhadra."
