The Battle of Vishnu and Dadhichi

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.59.1)

ब्रह्मोवाच । क्षुवस्य हितकृत्येन दधीचस्याश्रमं ययौ । विप्ररूपमथास्थाय भगवान् भक्तवत्सलः

brahmovāca | kṣuvasya hitakṛtyena dadhīcasyāśramaṁ yayau | viprarūpamathāsthāya bhagavān bhaktavatsalaḥ

Brahma said: "For the sake of doing good to Kshuva, the Lord, ever affectionate to his devotees, taking the form of a Brahmin, went to Dadhichi's hermitage."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.59.2)

दधीचं प्राह विप्रर्षिमभिवन्द्य जगद्गुरुः । क्षुवकार्यार्थमुद्युक्तः शैवेन्द्रं छलमाश्रितः

dadhīcaṁ prāha viprarṣimabhivandya jagadguruḥ | kṣuvakāryārthamudyuktaḥ śaivendraṁ chalamāśritaḥ

"The Guru of the universe, intent upon Kshuva's cause and resorting to that disguise before Shiva's devotee, bowed to the Brahmin-sage Dadhichi and spoke to him."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.59.3)

विष्णुरुवाच । भो भो दधीच विप्रर्षे भवार्चनरताव्यय । वरमेकं वृणे त्वत्तस्तद्भवान् दातुमर्हति

viṣṇuruvāca | bho bho dadhīca viprarṣe bhavārcanaratāvyaya | varamekaṁ vṛṇe tvattastadbhavān dātumarhati

Vishnu said: "O Dadhichi, O sage among Brahmins, ever devoted to the worship of Bhava, undying one, I ask a single boon of you — you should grant it to me."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.59.4)

ब्रह्मोवाच । याचितो देवदेवेन दधीचः शैवसत्तमः ॥ क्षुवकार्यार्थिना शीघ्रं जगाद वचनं हरिम्

brahmovāca | yācito devadevena dadhīcaḥ śaivasattamaḥ || kṣuvakāryārthinā śīghraṁ jagāda vacanaṁ harim

Brahma said: "Thus asked by the god of gods, Dadhichi, foremost devotee of Shiva, at once spoke these words to Hari, who he knew had come there for Kshuva's cause."

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.59.5)

दधीच उवाच । ज्ञातं तवेप्सितं विप्र क्षुवकार्यार्थमागतः । भगवान् विप्ररूपेण मायी त्वमसि वै हरिः

dadhīca uvāca | jñātaṁ tavepsitaṁ vipra kṣuvakāryārthamāgataḥ | bhagavān viprarūpeṇa māyī tvamasi vai hariḥ

Dadhichi said: "I know your intent, O Brahmin — you have come here for Kshuva's cause. You are the Lord Hari himself, master of maya, come in a Brahmin's form."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.59.6)

भूतं भविष्यं देवेश वर्तमानं जनार्दन । ज्ञानं प्रसादाद् रुद्रस्य सदा त्रैकालिकं मम

bhūtaṁ bhaviṣyaṁ deveśa vartamānaṁ janārdana | jñānaṁ prasādād rudrasya sadā traikālikaṁ mama

"O Lord of gods, O Janardana, by the grace of Rudra I possess, always, knowledge of the past, the future, and the present, spanning all three times."

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.59.7)

त्वां जानेऽहं हरिं विष्णुं द्विजत्वं त्यज सुव्रत । आराधितोऽसि भूपेन क्षुवेण खलबुद्धिना

tvāṁ jāne'haṁ hariṁ viṣṇuṁ dvijatvaṁ tyaja suvrata | ārādhito'si bhūpena kṣuveṇa khalabuddhinā

"I know you to be Hari, Vishnu — abandon this disguise as a Brahmin, O one of good vows. You have been solicited by the wicked-minded king Kshuva."

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.59.8)

जाने तवैव भगवन् भक्तवत्सलतां हरे । छलं त्यज स्वरूपं हि स्वीकुरु स्मर शङ्करम्

jāne tavaiva bhagavan bhaktavatsalatāṁ hare | chalaṁ tyaja svarūpaṁ hi svīkuru smara śaṅkaram

"I know indeed, O Lord, O Hari, your affection for your devotees — give up this pretense, assume your true form, and remember Shankara."

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.59.9)

अस्ति चेत्कस्यचिद्भीतिर्भवार्चनरतस्य मे । वक्तुमर्हसि यत्नेन सत्यधारणपूर्वकम्

asti cetkasyacidbhītirbhavārcanaratasya me | vaktumarhasi yatnena satyadhāraṇapūrvakam

"If I, devoted as I am to Bhava's worship, have fear of anyone, then, holding fast to truth, you should tell me so with due effort."

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.59.10)

वदामि न मृषा क्वापि शिवस्मरणसक्तधीः । न बिभेमि जगत्यस्मिन्देवदैत्यादिकादपि

vadāmi na mṛṣā kvāpi śivasmaraṇasaktadhīḥ | na bibhemi jagatyasmindevadaityādikādapi

"I never speak falsely, my mind ever fixed on the remembrance of Shiva — I fear nothing in this world, not even from gods or demons."

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.59.11)

विष्णुरुवाच । भयं दधीच सर्वत्र नष्टं च तव सुव्रत । भवार्चनरतो यस्माद्भवान्सर्वज्ञ एव च

viṣṇuruvāca | bhayaṁ dadhīca sarvatra naṣṭaṁ ca tava suvrata | bhavārcanarato yasmādbhavānsarvajña eva ca

Vishnu said: "O Dadhichi, O one of good vows, your fear is indeed destroyed everywhere, since you are devoted to Bhava's worship and all-knowing besides."

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.59.12)

बिभेमीति सकृद्वक्तुमर्हसि त्वं नमस्तव । नियोगान्मम राजेन्द्र क्षुवात् प्रतिसहादहम्

bibhemīti sakṛdvaktumarhasi tvaṁ namastava | niyogānmama rājendra kṣuvāt pratisahādaham

"Yet you should just once say, 'I am afraid' — homage to you — for, at Kshuva's bidding, I now stand against you."

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.59.13)

ब्रह्मोवाच । एवं श्रुत्वापि तद्वाक्यं विष्णोः स तु महामुनिः । विहस्य निर्भयः प्राह दधीचः शैवसत्तमः

brahmovāca | evaṁ śrutvāpi tadvākyaṁ viṣṇoḥ sa tu mahāmuniḥ | vihasya nirbhayaḥ prāha dadhīcaḥ śaivasattamaḥ

Brahma said: "Even on hearing those words of Vishnu, that great sage Dadhichi, foremost devotee of Shiva, laughed fearlessly and spoke."

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.59.14)

दधीच उवाच । न बिभेमि सदा क्वापि कुतश्चिदपि किञ्चन । प्रभावाद्देवदेवस्य शम्भोः साक्षात्पिनाकिनः

dadhīca uvāca | na bibhemi sadā kvāpi kutaścidapi kiñcana | prabhāvāddevadevasya śambhoḥ sākṣātpinākinaḥ

Dadhichi said: "I fear nothing at all, ever, from anyone, anywhere — by the power of the god of gods, Shambhu himself, wielder of the Pinaka bow."

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.59.15)

ब्रह्मोवाच । ततस्तस्य मुनेः श्रुत्वा वचनं कुपितो हरिः । चक्रमुद्यम्य सन्तस्थौ दिधक्षुर्मुनिसत्तमम्

brahmovāca | tatastasya muneḥ śrutvā vacanaṁ kupito hariḥ | cakramudyamya santasthau didhakṣurmunisattamam

"Then, hearing that sage's words, Hari grew angry; raising his discus, he stood ready, intent on burning that foremost of sages."

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.59.16)

अभवत्कुण्ठितं तत्र विप्रे चक्रं सुदारुणम् । प्रभावाच्च तदीशस्य नृपतेः सन्निधावपि

abhavatkuṇṭhitaṁ tatra vipre cakraṁ sudāruṇam | prabhāvācca tadīśasya nṛpateḥ sannidhāvapi

"There that most terrible discus was blunted against the Brahmin, by the power of his Lord, even there in the presence of the king."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.59.17)

दृष्ट्वा तं कुण्ठितास्यं तच्चक्रं विष्णुं जगाद ह । दधीचः सस्मितं साक्षात्सदसद्व्यक्तिकारणम्

dṛṣṭvā taṁ kuṇṭhitāsyaṁ taccakraṁ viṣṇuṁ jagāda ha | dadhīcaḥ sasmitaṁ sākṣātsadasadvyaktikāraṇam

"Seeing that discus with its edge blunted, Dadhichi, smiling — he who is himself the cause of the manifestation of both being and non-being — spoke to Vishnu."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.59.18)

दधीच उवाच । भगवन् भवता लब्धं पुरातीव सुदारुणम् । सुदर्शनमिति ख्यातं चक्रं विष्णोः प्रयत्नतः । भवस्य तच्छुभं चक्रं न जिघांसति मामिह

dadhīca uvāca | bhagavan bhavatā labdhaṁ purātīva sudāruṇam | sudarśanamiti khyātaṁ cakraṁ viṣṇoḥ prayatnataḥ | bhavasya tacchubhaṁ cakraṁ na jighāṁsati māmiha

Dadhichi said: "O Lord, this most terrible discus, obtained by you of old with great effort, renowned as Sudarshana — that auspicious discus does not wish to slay Bhava's devotee here."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.59.19)

भगवानथ क्रुद्धोऽस्मै सर्वास्त्राणि क्रमाद्धरिः । ब्रह्मास्त्राद्यैः शरैश्चास्त्रैः प्रयत्नं कर्तुमर्हसि

bhagavānatha kruddho'smai sarvāstrāṇi kramāddhariḥ | brahmāstrādyaiḥ śaraiścāstraiḥ prayatnaṁ kartumarhasi

"Then, O Lord, in your fury you should indeed make effort against me with all your weapons in turn — the Brahmastra and every other missile and arm."

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.59.20)

ब्रह्मोवाच । स तस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा दृष्ट्वा निर्वीर्यमानुषम् । ससर्जाथ क्रुधा तस्मै सर्वास्त्राणि क्रमाद्धरिः

brahmovāca | sa tasya vacanaṁ śrutvā dṛṣṭvā nirvīryamānuṣam | sasarjātha krudhā tasmai sarvāstrāṇi kramāddhariḥ

Brahma said: "Hearing his words, and taking him for a mere powerless human, Hari, in his fury, then released upon him all his weapons in turn."

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.59.21)

चक्रुर्देवास्ततस्तस्य विष्णोःसाहाय्यमादरात् । द्विजेनैकेन संयोद्धुं प्रसृतस्य विबुद्धयः

cakrurdevāstatastasya viṣṇoḥsāhāyyamādarāt | dvijenaikena saṁyoddhuṁ prasṛtasya vibuddhayaḥ

"Then the wise gods, respectfully, gave their aid to Vishnu as he strove to do battle with a single Brahmin."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.59.22)

चिक्षिपुः स्वानि स्वान्याशु शस्त्राण्यस्त्राणि सर्वतः । दधीचोपरि वेगेन शक्राद्या हरिपाक्षिकाः

cikṣipuḥ svāni svānyāśu śastrāṇyastrāṇi sarvataḥ | dadhīcopari vegena śakrādyā haripākṣikāḥ

"Indra and the other gods on Hari's side swiftly hurled all their own weapons and missiles upon Dadhichi from every side."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.59.23)

कुशमुष्टिमथादाय दधीचः संस्मरन् शिवम् । ससर्ज सर्वदेवेभ्यो वज्रास्थिः सर्वतो वशी

kuśamuṣṭimathādāya dadhīcaḥ saṁsmaran śivam | sasarja sarvadevebhyo vajrāsthiḥ sarvato vaśī

"Then Dadhichi, of adamantine bones, master of himself in every way, took up a handful of kusha grass, and, remembering Shiva, hurled it against all the gods."

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.59.24)

शङ्करस्य प्रभावात्तु कुशमुष्टिर्मुनेर्हि सा । दिव्यं त्रिशूलमभवत् कालाग्निसदृशं मुने

śaṅkarasya prabhāvāttu kuśamuṣṭirmunerhi sā | divyaṁ triśūlamabhavat kālāgnisadṛśaṁ mune

"By the power of Shankara, that handful of kusha grass became a divine trident, resembling the fire of time's dissolution, O sage."

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.59.25)

दग्धुं देवान् मतिं चक्रे सायुधान् सशिखं च तत् । प्रज्वलत्सर्वतः शैवं युगान्ताग्न्यधिकप्रभम्

dagdhuṁ devān matiṁ cakre sāyudhān saśikhaṁ ca tat | prajvalatsarvataḥ śaivaṁ yugāntāgnyadhikaprabham

"That flaming trident of Shiva, blazing on every side, more radiant than the fire at the end of an age, its crest ablaze, resolved to burn the armed gods."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.59.26)

नारायणेन्द्रमुख्यैस्तु देवैः क्षिप्तानि यानि च । आयुधानि समस्तानि प्रणेमुस्त्रिशिखं च तत्

nārāyaṇendramukhyaistu devaiḥ kṣiptāni yāni ca | āyudhāni samastāni praṇemustriśikhaṁ ca tat

"And all the weapons hurled by Narayana, Indra, and the other chief gods bowed down before that trident."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.59.27)

देवाश्च दुद्रुवुः सर्वे ध्वस्तवीर्या दिवौकसः । तस्थौ तत्र हरिर्भीतः केवलं मायिनां वरः

devāśca dudruvuḥ sarve dhvastavīryā divaukasaḥ | tasthau tatra harirbhītaḥ kevalaṁ māyināṁ varaḥ

"All the gods, dwellers of heaven, their valor shattered, fled away; only Hari, foremost among wielders of maya, stood there afraid."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.59.28)

ससर्ज भगवान् विष्णुः स्वदेहात्पुरुषोत्तमः । आत्मनः सदृशान् दिव्यान् लक्षलक्षायुतान् गणान्

sasarja bhagavān viṣṇuḥ svadehātpuruṣottamaḥ | ātmanaḥ sadṛśān divyān lakṣalakṣāyutān gaṇān

"Then Lord Vishnu, Purushottama, brought forth from his own body countless divine hosts, hundreds of thousands upon hundreds of thousands, each equal to himself."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.59.29)

ते चापि युयुधुस्तत्र वीरा विष्णुगणास्ततः । मुनिनैकेन देवर्षे दधीचेन शिवात्मना

te cāpi yuyudhustatra vīrā viṣṇugaṇāstataḥ | muninaikena devarṣe dadhīcena śivātmanā

"And those heroic Vishnu-ganas then fought there against the single sage Dadhichi, whose very soul was fixed on Shiva, O divine sage."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.59.30)

ततो विष्णुगणांस्तान्वै नियुध्य बहुशो रणे । ददाह सहसा सर्वान् दधीचः शैवसत्तमः

tato viṣṇugaṇāṁstānvai niyudhya bahuśo raṇe | dadāha sahasā sarvān dadhīcaḥ śaivasattamaḥ

"Then, having fought those Vishnu-ganas repeatedly in that battle, Dadhichi, foremost devotee of Shiva, at once burned them all to ashes."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.59.31)

ततस्तद्विस्मयार्थाय दधीचस्य मुनेर्हरिः । विश्वमूर्तिरभूच्छीघ्रं महामायाविशारदः

tatastadvismayārthāya dadhīcasya munerhariḥ | viśvamūrtirabhūcchīghraṁ mahāmāyāviśāradaḥ

"Then, in order to astonish the sage Dadhichi, Hari, most skilled in great maya, swiftly assumed his cosmic form, the Vishvarupa."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.59.32)

तस्य देहे हरेः साक्षादपश्यद् द्विजसत्तमः । दधीचो देवतादीनां जीवानां च सहस्रकम्

tasya dehe hareḥ sākṣādapaśyad dvijasattamaḥ | dadhīco devatādīnāṁ jīvānāṁ ca sahasrakam

"In that very body of Hari, that foremost of Brahmins, Dadhichi, beheld with his own eyes thousands upon thousands of gods and living beings."

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.59.33)

भूतानां कोटयश्चैव गणानां कोटयस्तथा । अण्डानां कोटयश्चैव विश्वमूर्तेस्तनौ तदा

bhūtānāṁ koṭayaścaiva gaṇānāṁ koṭayastathā | aṇḍānāṁ koṭayaścaiva viśvamūrtestanau tadā

"And, in the body of that cosmic form, he saw crores of beings, crores of ganas, and crores of universes as well."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.59.34)

दृष्ट्वैतदखिलं तत्र च्यावनिः सततं तदा । विष्णुमाह जगन्नाथं जगत्स्तवमजं विभुम्

dṛṣṭvaitadakhilaṁ tatra cyāvaniḥ satataṁ tadā | viṣṇumāha jagannāthaṁ jagatstavamajaṁ vibhum

"Having seen all this, the son of Chyavana remained wholly unmoved, and spoke to Vishnu, Lord of the universe, praised by all the world, unborn and all-pervading."

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.59.35)

दधीच उवाच । मायां त्यज महाबाहो प्रतिभासो विचारतः । विज्ञातानि सहस्राणि दुर्विज्ञेयानि माधव

dadhīca uvāca | māyāṁ tyaja mahābāho pratibhāso vicārataḥ | vijñātāni sahasrāṇi durvijñeyāni mādhava

Dadhichi said: "Give up this maya, O mighty-armed one — this is a mere appearance, once one examines it. I already know full well, O Madhava, the thousands of things that are otherwise so hard to know."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.59.36)

मयि पश्य जगत्सर्वं त्वया युक्तमतन्द्रितः । ब्रह्माणं च तथा रुद्रं दिव्यां दृष्टिं ददामि ते

mayi paśya jagatsarvaṁ tvayā yuktamatandritaḥ | brahmāṇaṁ ca tathā rudraṁ divyāṁ dṛṣṭiṁ dadāmi te

"Behold in me, without slackening your attention, this whole universe joined with you, and Brahma, and Rudra as well — I now grant you divine sight."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.59.37)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्त्वा दर्शयामास स्वतनौ निखिलं मुनिः । ब्रह्माण्डं च्यावनिः शम्भुतेजसा पूर्णदेहकः

brahmovāca | ityuktvā darśayāmāsa svatanau nikhilaṁ muniḥ | brahmāṇḍaṁ cyāvaniḥ śambhutejasā pūrṇadehakaḥ

Brahma said: "Having said this, the sage, son of Chyavana, his body filled with the very splendor of Shambhu, showed the entire universe within his own body."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.59.38)

तदाह विष्णुं देवेशं दधीचः शैवसत्तमः । संस्मरन् शङ्करं चित्ते विहसन् विभयः सुधीः

tadāha viṣṇuṁ deveśaṁ dadhīcaḥ śaivasattamaḥ | saṁsmaran śaṅkaraṁ citte vihasan vibhayaḥ sudhīḥ

"Then Dadhichi, foremost devotee of Shiva, wise and fearless, calling Shankara to mind in his heart and laughing, spoke to Vishnu, lord of the gods."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.59.39)

दधीच उवाच । मायया त्वनया किं वा मन्त्रशक्त्याथ वा हरे । सत्कामनामिमां कृत्वा योद्धुमर्हसि यत्नतः

dadhīca uvāca | māyayā tvanayā kiṁ vā mantraśaktyātha vā hare | satkāmanāmimāṁ kṛtvā yoddhumarhasi yatnataḥ

Dadhichi said: "What use is this maya of yours, O Hari, or your mantra-power either? Set aside this vain desire, and strive instead to fight me in earnest."

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.59.40)

ब्रह्मोवाच । एतच्छुत्वा मुनेस्तस्य वचनं निर्भयस्तदा । शम्भुतेजोमयं विष्णुः चुकोपातीव तं मुनिम्

brahmovāca | etacchutvā munestasya vacanaṁ nirbhayastadā | śambhutejomayaṁ viṣṇuḥ cukopātīva taṁ munim

Brahma said: "Hearing these fearless words of that sage, Vishnu grew exceedingly wrathful at that sage who was filled with the very splendor of Shambhu."

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.59.41)

देवाश्च दुद्रुवुर्भूयो देवं नारायणं च तम् । योद्धुकामाश्च मुनिना दधीचेन प्रतापिना

devāśca dudruvurbhūyo devaṁ nārāyaṇaṁ ca tam | yoddhukāmāśca muninā dadhīcena pratāpinā

"And once again the gods fled, along with the god Narayana himself, though they still wished to fight against the glorious sage Dadhichi."

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.59.42)

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्रागमन्मत्सङ्गमः क्षुवः । अवारयन्तं निश्चेष्टं पद्मयोनिं हरिं सुरान्

etasminnantare tatrāgamanmatsaṅgamaḥ kṣuvaḥ | avārayantaṁ niśceṣṭaṁ padmayoniṁ hariṁ surān

"Meanwhile, Kshuva, my own companion, arrived there, and found Hari standing motionless, holding back the gods."

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.59.43)

निशम्य वचनं मे हि ब्राह्मणो न विनिर्जितः । जगाम निकटं तस्य प्रणनाम मुनिं हरिः

niśamya vacanaṁ me hi brāhmaṇo na vinirjitaḥ | jagāma nikaṭaṁ tasya praṇanāma muniṁ hariḥ

"Hearing my own words — that the Brahmin could not be overcome — Hari approached him and bowed down to that sage."

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.59.44)

क्षुवो दीनतरो भूत्वा गत्वा तत्र मुनीश्वरम् । दधीचमभिवाद्यैव प्रार्थयामास विक्लवः

kṣuvo dīnataro bhūtvā gatvā tatra munīśvaram | dadhīcamabhivādyaiva prārthayāmāsa viklavaḥ

"Then Kshuva, grown utterly humbled, went there to that lord of sages, and, having bowed to Dadhichi, made his plea in great distress."

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.59.45)

क्षुव उवाच । प्रसीद मुनिशार्दूल शिवभक्तशिरोमणे । प्रसीद परमेशान दुर्लक्ष्यो दुर्जनैः सदा

kṣuva uvāca | prasīda muniśārdūla śivabhaktaśiromaṇe | prasīda parameśāna durlakṣyo durjanaiḥ sadā

Kshuva said: "Be gracious, O tiger among sages, O crest-jewel of Shiva's devotees! Be gracious, O one whose true nature the wicked can never perceive."

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.59.46)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य राज्ञः सुरगणस्य हि । अनुजग्राह तं विप्रो दधीचस्तपसां निधिः

brahmovāca | ityākarṇya vacastasya rājñaḥ suragaṇasya hi | anujagrāha taṁ vipro dadhīcastapasāṁ nidhiḥ

Brahma said: "Hearing these words of the king and of the host of gods, the Brahmin Dadhichi, that treasury of austerity, showed him grace."

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.59.47)

अथ दृष्ट्वा रमेशादीन् क्रोधविह्वलितो मुनिः । हृदि स्मृत्वा शिवं विष्णुं शशाप च सुरानपि

atha dṛṣṭvā rameśādīn krodhavihvalito muniḥ | hṛdi smṛtvā śivaṁ viṣṇuṁ śaśāpa ca surānapi

"Then, seeing Rameshvara and the others, the sage, overcome with anger, calling Shiva to mind in his heart, cursed Vishnu and the gods as well."

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.59.48)

दधीच उवाच । रुद्रकोपाग्निना देवाः सदेवेन्द्रा मुनीश्वराः । ध्वस्ता भवन्तु देवेन विष्णुना च समं गणैः

dadhīca uvāca | rudrakopāgninā devāḥ sadevendrā munīśvarāḥ | dhvastā bhavantu devena viṣṇunā ca samaṁ gaṇaiḥ

Dadhichi said: "By the fire of Rudra's wrath, may the gods together with Indra, and even the great sages, be destroyed, together with god Vishnu and his hosts!"

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.59.49)

ब्रह्मोवाच । एवं शप्त्वा सुरान् प्रेक्ष्य क्षुवमाह ततो मुनिः । देवैश्च पूज्यो राजेन्द्र नृपैश्चैव द्विजोत्तमः

brahmovāca | evaṁ śaptvā surān prekṣya kṣuvamāha tato muniḥ | devaiśca pūjyo rājendra nṛpaiścaiva dvijottamaḥ

Brahma said: "Having thus cursed the gods, and looking upon Kshuva, the sage then said to him: 'O foremost of kings, the foremost of the twice-born is to be honored by gods and kings alike.'"

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.59.50)

ब्राह्मणा एव राजेन्द्र बलिनः प्रभविष्णवः । इत्युक्त्वा स स्फुटं विप्रः प्रविवेश निजाश्रमम्

brāhmaṇā eva rājendra balinaḥ prabhaviṣṇavaḥ | ityuktvā sa sphuṭaṁ vipraḥ praviveśa nijāśramam

"'Brahmins alone, O foremost of kings, are truly strong and mighty.' Having said this plainly, that Brahmin entered his own hermitage."

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.59.51)

दधीचमभिवन्द्यैव क्षुवो निजगृहं गतः । विष्णुर्जगाम स्वं लोकं सुरैः सह यथागतम्

dadhīcamabhivandyaiva kṣuvo nijagṛhaṁ gataḥ | viṣṇurjagāma svaṁ lokaṁ suraiḥ saha yathāgatam

"Bowing to Dadhichi, Kshuva went to his own home; and Vishnu, together with the gods, returned to his own abode just as he had come."

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.59.52)

तदेवं तीर्थमभवत् स्थानेश्वर इति स्मृतम् । स्थानेश्वरमनुप्राप्य शिवसायुज्यमाप्नुयात्

tadevaṁ tīrthamabhavat sthāneśvara iti smṛtam | sthāneśvaramanuprāpya śivasāyujyamāpnuyāt

"Thus that place became a sacred tirtha known as Sthaneshvara; whoever attains Sthaneshvara attains union with Shiva."

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.59.53)

कथितस्तव सङ्क्षेपाद्वादः क्षुवदधीचयोः । नृपाप्तशापयोस्तात ब्रह्मविष्ण्वोः शिवं विना

kathitastava saṅkṣepādvādaḥ kṣuvadadhīcayoḥ | nṛpāptaśāpayostāta brahmaviṣṇvoḥ śivaṁ vinā

"O dear one, I have told you in brief of this dispute between Kshuva and Dadhichi, by which the sage's curse fell also upon Brahma and Vishnu, all on account of one who stood apart from Shiva."

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.59.54)

य इदं कीर्तयेन्नित्यं वादं क्षुवदधीचयोः । जित्वापमृत्युं देहान्ते ब्रह्मलोकं प्रयाति सः

ya idaṁ kīrtayennityaṁ vādaṁ kṣuvadadhīcayoḥ | jitvāpamṛtyuṁ dehānte brahmalokaṁ prayāti saḥ

"Whoever daily recites this dispute of Kshuva and Dadhichi conquers untimely death, and at the end of the body goes to Brahmaloka."

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.59.55)

रणे यः कीर्तयित्वेदं प्रविशेत्तस्य सर्वदा । मृत्युभीतिर्भवेन्नैव विजयी च भविष्यति

raṇe yaḥ kīrtayitvedaṁ praviśettasya sarvadā | mṛtyubhītirbhavennaiva vijayī ca bhaviṣyati

"Whoever recites this and then enters battle shall never have fear of death, and shall always be victorious."
