Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.65.1)

नारद उवाच । विधे प्राज्ञ वदेदानीं मेनोत्पत्तिं समादरात् । अपि शापं समाचक्ष्व कुरु सन्देहभञ्जनम्

nārada uvāca vidhe prājña vadedānīṁ menotpattiṁ samādarāt api śāpaṁ samācakṣva kuru sandehabhañjanam

Narada said: "O wise Creator, now tell me respectfully of Mena's origin. Also relate the curse, and dispel my doubt."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.65.2)

ब्रह्मोवाच । शृणु नारद सुप्रीत्या मेनोत्पत्तिं विवेकतः । मुनिभिः सह वक्ष्येऽहं सुतवर्य महाबुध

brahmovāca śṛṇu nārada suprītyā menotpattiṁ vivekataḥ munibhiḥ saha vakṣye'haṁ sutavarya mahābudha

Brahma said: "Listen, Narada, with delight and discernment, to Mena's origin. O best of sons, greatly wise one, I shall relate it together with the sages' own story."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.65.3)

दक्षनामा मम सुतो यः पुरा कथितो मुने । तस्य जाताः सुताः षष्टिप्रमिताः सृष्टिकारणाः

dakṣanāmā mama suto yaḥ purā kathito mune tasya jātāḥ sutāḥ ṣaṣṭipramitāḥ sṛṣṭikāraṇāḥ

"My son named Daksha, of whom I spoke before, O sage — to him were born sixty daughters, the causes of creation.

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.65.4)

तासां विवाहमकरोत्स वरैः कश्यपादिभिः । विदितं ते समस्तं तत्प्रस्तुतं शृणु नारद

tāsāṁ vivāhamakarotsa varaiḥ kaśyapādibhiḥ viditaṁ te samastaṁ tatprastutaṁ śṛṇu nārada

"He gave them all in marriage to Kashyapa and other bridegrooms — all this is known to you; now hear what is relevant, Narada.

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.65.5)

तासां मध्ये स्वधानाम्नीं पितृभ्यो दत्तवान्सुताम् । तिस्रोऽभवन्सुतास्तस्याः सुभगा धर्ममूर्तयः

tāsāṁ madhye svadhānāmnīṁ pitṛbhyo dattavānsutām tisro'bhavansutāstasyāḥ subhagā dharmamūrtayaḥ

"Among them, he gave one daughter named Svadha to the Pitrs (ancestors); to her were born three daughters, fortunate, embodiments of dharma.

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.65.6)

तासां नामानि शृणु मे पावनानि मुनीश्वर । सदा विघ्नहराण्येव महामङ्गलदानि च

tāsāṁ nāmāni śṛṇu me pāvanāni munīśvara sadā vighnaharāṇyeva mahāmaṅgaladāni ca

"Hear from me their names, O lord of sages — sacred names, ever removers of obstacles, and bestowers of great auspiciousness.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.65.7)

मेनानाम्नी सुता ज्येष्ठा मध्या धन्या कलावती । अन्त्या एताः सुताः सर्वाः पितॄणां मानसोद्भवाः

menānāmnī sutā jyeṣṭhā madhyā dhanyā kalāvatī antyā etāḥ sutāḥ sarvāḥ pitṝṇāṁ mānasodbhavāḥ

"The eldest daughter was named Mena, the middle one Dhanya, and the youngest Kalavati — all these daughters were born of the Pitrs' own mind.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.65.8)

अयोनिजाः स्वधायाश्च लोकतस्तत्सुता मताः । आसां प्रोच्य सुनामानि सर्वान्कामान् जनो लभेत्

ayonijāḥ svadhāyāśca lokatastatsutā matāḥ āsāṁ procya sunāmāni sarvānkāmān jano labhet

"Though not born from a womb, they are held by the world to be Svadha's daughters; by uttering their auspicious names, a person obtains all desires.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.65.9)

जगद्वन्द्याः सदा लोकमातरः परमोददाः । योगिन्यः परमा ज्ञाननिधानास्तास्त्रिलोकगाः

jagadvandyāḥ sadā lokamātaraḥ paramodadāḥ yoginyaḥ paramā jñānanidhānāstāstrilokagāḥ

"Ever revered by the world, mothers of all beings, supreme bestowers of joy, yoginis, supreme treasuries of knowledge, they range through the three worlds.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.65.10)

एकस्मिन्समये तिस्रो भगिन्यस्ता मुनीश्वर । श्वेतद्वीपं विष्णुलोकं जग्मुर्दर्शनहेतवे

ekasminsamaye tisro bhaginyastā munīśvara śvetadvīpaṁ viṣṇulokaṁ jagmurdarśanahetave

"Once, O lord of sages, those three sisters went to Shvetadvipa, Vishnu's realm, for the purpose of his darshan.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.65.11)

कृत्वा प्रणामं विष्णोश्च संस्तुतिं भक्तिसंयुताः । तस्थुस्तदाज्ञया तत्र सुसमाजो महानभूत्

kṛtvā praṇāmaṁ viṣṇośca saṁstutiṁ bhaktisaṁyutāḥ tasthustadājñayā tatra susamājo mahānabhūt

"Having bowed to Vishnu and, filled with devotion, offered praise, they remained there by his leave; a great and goodly assembly had gathered there.

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.65.12)

तदैव सनकाद्यास्तु सिद्धा ब्रह्मसुता मुने । गतास्तत्र हरिं नत्वा स्तुत्वा तस्थुस्तदाज्ञया

tadaiva sanakādyāstu siddhā brahmasutā mune gatāstatra hariṁ natvā stutvā tasthustadājñayā

"At that very time, O sage, the perfected sons of Brahma beginning with Sanaka arrived there too; having bowed to and praised Hari, they remained there by his leave.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.65.13)

सनकाद्यान्मुनीन् दृष्ट्वोत्तस्थुस्ते सकला द्रुतम् । तत्रस्थान्संस्थितान्नत्वा देवाद्याँल्लोकवन्दितान्

sanakādyānmunīn dṛṣṭvottasthuste sakalā drutam tatrasthānsaṁsthitānnatvā devādyā~llokavanditān

"Seeing the sages beginning with Sanaka, all who were seated there rose up quickly, bowing to the gods and others present, who were revered by the world.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.65.14)

तिस्रो भगिन्यस्तास्तत्र नोत्तस्थुर्मोहिता मुने । मायया दैवविवशाः शङ्करस्य परात्मनः

tisro bhaginyastāstatra nottasthurmohitā mune māyayā daivavivaśāḥ śaṅkarasya parātmanaḥ

"But the three sisters there did not rise, being deluded, O sage, made helpless by fate through the Maya of Shankara, the Supreme Self.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.65.15)

मोहिनी सर्वलोकानां शिवमाया गरीयसी । तदधीनं जगत्सर्वं शिवेच्छा सा प्रकीर्त्यते

mohinī sarvalokānāṁ śivamāyā garīyasī tadadhīnaṁ jagatsarvaṁ śivecchā sā prakīrtyate

"The Maya of Shiva, deluder of all worlds, is supreme; the whole universe is subject to it — it is proclaimed to be Shiva's own Will.

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.65.16)

प्रारब्धं प्रोच्यते सैव तन्नामानि ह्यनेकशः । शिवेच्छया भवत्येव नात्र कार्या विचारणा

prārabdhaṁ procyate saiva tannāmāni hyanekaśaḥ śivecchayā bhavatyeva nātra kāryā vicāraṇā

"That very Will is also called Prarabdha, destiny — it has many names; it comes about solely by Shiva's wish; here there is no need for further deliberation.

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.65.17)

भूत्वा तद्वशगास्ता वै न चक्रुरपि तन्नतिम् । विस्मिताः सम्प्रदृश्यैव संस्थितास्तत्र केवलम्

bhūtvā tadvaśagāstā vai na cakrurapi tannatim vismitāḥ sampradṛśyaiva saṁsthitāstatra kevalam

"Coming under its sway, those sisters could not even bow; astonished, merely gazing on, they remained seated there just as they were.

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.65.18)

तादृशीं तद्गतिं दृष्ट्वा सनकाद्या मुनीश्वराः । ज्ञानिनोऽपि परं चक्रुः क्रोधं दुर्विषहं च ते

tādṛśīṁ tadgatiṁ dṛṣṭvā sanakādyā munīśvarāḥ jñānino'pi paraṁ cakruḥ krodhaṁ durviṣahaṁ ca te

"Seeing such conduct on their part, the lords of sages beginning with Sanaka, though men of knowledge, felt an unbearable anger.

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.65.19)

शिवेच्छामोहितस्तत्र सक्रोधस्ता उवाच ह । सनत्कुमारो योगीशः शापं दण्डकरं ददत्

śivecchāmohitastatra sakrodhastā uvāca ha sanatkumāro yogīśaḥ śāpaṁ daṇḍakaraṁ dadat

"There Sanatkumara, lord of yogis, deluded by Shiva's own will yet full of wrath, spoke to them, delivering a punishing curse.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.65.20)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । यूयं तिस्रो भगिन्यश्च मूढाः सद्वयुनोज्झिताः । अज्ञातश्रुतितत्त्वा हि पितृकन्या अपि ध्रुवम्

sanatkumāra uvāca yūyaṁ tisro bhaginyaśca mūḍhāḥ sadvayunojjhitāḥ ajñātaśrutitattvā hi pitṛkanyā api dhruvam

Sanatkumara said: "You three sisters are foolish, devoid of right knowledge; though daughters of the Pitrs, you surely do not know the truth of the scriptures.

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.65.21)

अभ्युत्थानं कृतं नो यो नमस्कारोऽपि गर्विताः । मोहिता नरभावत्वात्स्वर्गाद् दूरा भवन्तु हि

abhyutthānaṁ kṛtaṁ no yo namaskāro'pi garvitāḥ mohitā narabhāvatvātsvargād dūrā bhavantu hi

"You showed us no rising in respect, not even a bow, being proud; deluded, may you become far from heaven, taking on the nature of mortals.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.65.22)

नरस्त्रियः सम्भवन्तु तिस्रोऽप्य ज्ञानमोहिताः । स्वकर्मणः प्रभावेण लभध्वं फलमीदृशम्

narastriyaḥ sambhavantu tisro'pya jñānamohitāḥ svakarmaṇaḥ prabhāveṇa labhadhvaṁ phalamīdṛśam

"Let all three of you, deluded by ignorance, be born as mortal women; by the force of your own deed, obtain such a fruit.

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.65.23)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य च साध्व्यस्तास्तिस्रोऽपि चकिता भृशम् । पतित्वा पादयोस्तस्य समूचूर्नतमस्तकाः

brahmovāca ityākarṇya ca sādhvyastāstisro'pi cakitā bhṛśam patitvā pādayostasya samūcūrnatamastakāḥ

Brahma said: "Hearing this, those three virtuous women, greatly alarmed, fell at his feet and, with bowed heads, spoke.

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.65.24)

पितृतनया ऊचुः मुनिवर्य दयासिन्धो प्रसन्नो भव चाधुना । त्वत्प्रणामं वयं मूढाः कुर्महे स्म न भावतः

pitṛtanayā ūcuḥ munivarya dayāsindho prasanno bhava cādhunā tvatpraṇāmaṁ vayaṁ mūḍhāḥ kurmahe sma na bhāvataḥ

The daughters of the Pitrs said: "O best of sages, ocean of compassion, be gracious now; we, being foolish, could not bow to you as we should have.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.65.25)

प्राप्तं च तत्फलं विप्र न ते दोषो महामुने । अनुग्रहं कुरुष्वात्र लभेम स्वर्गतिं पुनः

prāptaṁ ca tatphalaṁ vipra na te doṣo mahāmune anugrahaṁ kuruṣvātra labhema svargatiṁ punaḥ

"We have received our due fruit, O brahmin; the fault is not yours, great sage. Show us grace, that we may again attain the path to heaven."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.65.26)

ब्रह्मोवाच श्रुत्वा तद्वचनं तात प्रोवाच स मुनिस्तदा । शापोद्धारं प्रसन्नात्मा प्रेरितः शिवमायया

brahmovāca śrutvā tadvacanaṁ tāta provāca sa munistadā śāpoddhāraṁ prasannātmā preritaḥ śivamāyayā

Brahma said: "Hearing that speech, dear one, that sage, his mind now gracious and moved by Shiva's own Maya, then declared the release from the curse.

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.65.27)

सनत्कुमार उवाच पितॄणां तनयास्तिस्रः शृणुत प्रीतमानसाः । वचनं मम शोकघ्नं सुखदं सर्वदैव वः

sanatkumāra uvāca pitṝṇāṁ tanayāstisraḥ śṛṇuta prītamānasāḥ vacanaṁ mama śokaghnaṁ sukhadaṁ sarvadaiva vaḥ

Sanatkumara said: "O three daughters of the Pitrs, listen with glad hearts to my word, which destroys sorrow and ever brings you joy.

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.65.28)

विष्णोरंशस्य शैलस्य हिमाधारस्य कामिनी । ज्येष्ठा भवतु तत्कन्या भविष्यत्येव पार्वती

viṣṇoraṁśasya śailasya himādhārasya kāminī jyeṣṭhā bhavatu tatkanyā bhaviṣyatyeva pārvatī

"Let the eldest become the beloved of the mountain who bears the snow, a portion of Vishnu; that daughter of hers shall indeed become Parvati.

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.65.29)

धन्या प्रिया द्वितीया तु योगिनी जनकस्य च । तस्याः कन्या महालक्ष्मीर्नाम्ना सीता भविष्यति

dhanyā priyā dvitīyā tu yoginī janakasya ca tasyāḥ kanyā mahālakṣmīrnāmnā sītā bhaviṣyati

"The second, Dhanya, shall become the beloved yogini-wife of Janaka; her daughter, the great goddess of Fortune, shall be named Sita.

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.65.30)

वृषभानस्य वैश्यस्य कनिष्ठा च कलावती । भविष्यति प्रिया राधा तत्सुता द्वापरान्ततः

vṛṣabhānasya vaiśyasya kaniṣṭhā ca kalāvatī bhaviṣyati priyā rādhā tatsutā dvāparāntataḥ

"The youngest, Kalavati, shall become the beloved wife of Vrishabhanu the merchant; at the end of Dvapara her daughter shall be Radha.

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.65.31)

मेनका योगिनी पत्या पार्वत्याश्च वरेण च । तेन देहेन कैलासं गमिष्यति परं पदम्

menakā yoginī patyā pārvatyāśca vareṇa ca tena dehena kailāsaṁ gamiṣyati paraṁ padam

"Menaka, as a yogini, together with her husband and by Parvati's boon, shall go with that very body to Kailasa, the supreme abode.

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.65.32)

धन्या च सीतया सीरध्वजो जनकवंशजः । जीवन्मुक्तो महायोगी वैकुण्ठं च गमिष्यति

dhanyā ca sītayā sīradhvajo janakavaṁśajaḥ jīvanmukto mahāyogī vaikuṇṭhaṁ ca gamiṣyati

"And Dhanya, together with Sita and Sīradhvaja of Janaka's lineage, liberated while living, a great yogi, shall go to Vaikuntha.

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.65.33)

कलावती वृषभानस्य कौतुकात्कन्यया सह । जीवन्मुक्ता च गोलोकं गमिष्यति न संशयः

kalāvatī vṛṣabhānasya kautukātkanyayā saha jīvanmuktā ca golokaṁ gamiṣyati na saṁśayaḥ

"Kalavati, together with Vrishabhanu, out of delight, along with her daughter, liberated while living, shall go to Goloka, without doubt.

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.65.34)

विना विपत्तिं महिमा केषां कुत्र भविष्यति । सुकर्मिणां गते दुःखे प्रभवेद् दुर्लभं सुखम्

vinā vipattiṁ mahimā keṣāṁ kutra bhaviṣyati sukarmiṇāṁ gate duḥkhe prabhaved durlabhaṁ sukham

"For whom, and where, does greatness ever come about without adversity? For those of good deeds, once sorrow has passed, a happiness hard to attain arises.

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.65.35)

पितृणां तनयाः यूयं सर्वाः स्वर्गविलासिकाः । कर्मक्षयश्च युष्माकमभवद्विष्णुदर्शनात्

pitṛṇāṁ tanayāḥ yūyaṁ sarvāḥ svargavilāsikāḥ karmakṣayaśca yuṣmākamabhavadviṣṇudarśanāt

"You, daughters of the Pitrs, all dwellers of heavenly delight — your karma has already been exhausted through the very sight of Vishnu.

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.65.36)

इत्युक्त्वा पुनरप्याह गतक्रोधो मुनीश्वरः । शिवं संस्मृत्य मनसा ज्ञानदं भुक्तिमुक्तिदम्

ityuktvā punarapyāha gatakrodho munīśvaraḥ śivaṁ saṁsmṛtya manasā jñānadaṁ bhuktimuktidam

"Having said this, the lord of sages, his anger now gone, spoke again, calling to mind in his heart Shiva, giver of knowledge and bestower of both enjoyment and liberation.

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.65.37)

अपरं शृणुत प्रीत्या मद्वचः सुखदं सदा । धन्या यूयं शिवप्रीता मान्या पूज्या ह्यभीक्ष्णशः

aparaṁ śṛṇuta prītyā madvacaḥ sukhadaṁ sadā dhanyā yūyaṁ śivaprītā mānyā pūjyā hyabhīkṣṇaśaḥ

"Hear further, with delight, this ever-joyful word of mine: you are blessed, beloved of Shiva, honored and worshipped again and again.

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.65.38)

मेनायास्तनया देवी पार्वती जगदम्बिका । भविष्यति प्रिया शम्भोस्तपः कृत्वा सुदुस्सहम्

menāyāstanayā devī pārvatī jagadambikā bhaviṣyati priyā śambhostapaḥ kṛtvā sudussaham

"Mena's daughter, the goddess Parvati, Mother of the universe, having performed the most unbearable austerity, shall become the beloved of Shambhu.

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.65.39)

धन्यासुता स्मृता सीता रामपत्नी भविष्यति । लौकिकाचारमाश्रित्य रामेण विहरिष्यति

dhanyāsutā smṛtā sītā rāmapatnī bhaviṣyati laukikācāramāśritya rāmeṇa vihariṣyati

"Dhanya's daughter, remembered as Sita, shall become Rama's wife; following worldly custom, she shall dwell happily with Rama.

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.65.40)

कलावतीसुता राधा साक्षाद् गोलोकवासिनी । गुप्तस्नेहनिबद्धा सा कृष्णपत्नी भविष्यति

kalāvatīsutā rādhā sākṣād golokavāsinī guptasnehanibaddhā sā kṛṣṇapatnī bhaviṣyati

"Kalavati's daughter Radha, verily a dweller of Goloka, bound by secret love, shall become Krishna's consort."

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.65.41)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्थमाभाष्य स मुनिर्भ्रातृभिः सह संस्तुतः । सनत्कुमारो भगवाँस्तत्रैवान्तर्हितोऽभवत्

brahmovāca itthamābhāṣya sa munirbhrātṛbhiḥ saha saṁstutaḥ sanatkumāro bhagavā~statraivāntarhito'bhavat

Brahma said: "Having spoken thus, that sage, the blessed Sanatkumara, praised together with his brothers, disappeared right there.

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.65.42)

तिस्रो भगिन्यस्तास्तात पितृणां मानसीः सुताः । गतपापाः सुखं प्राप्य स्वधाम प्रययुर्द्रुतम्

tisro bhaginyastāstāta pitṛṇāṁ mānasīḥ sutāḥ gatapāpāḥ sukhaṁ prāpya svadhāma prayayurdrutam

"Those three sisters, dear one, the mind-born daughters of the Pitrs, their sins now gone, having attained happiness, swiftly went to their own abode."
