Narada's Counsel to Himalaya
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.71.1)
ब्रह्मोवाच । एकदा त्वं शिवज्ञानी शिवलीलाविदां वरः । हिमाचलगृहं प्रीत्यागमस्त्वं शिवप्रेरितः
brahmovāca ekadā tvaṁ śivajñānī śivalīlāvidāṁ varaḥ himācalagṛhaṁ prītyāgamastvaṁ śivapreritaḥ
Brahma said: "Once you, O knower of Shiva, the best among those who know Shiva's plays, came with delight to Himachal's house, inspired by Shiva himself.
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.71.2)
दृष्ट्वा मुने गिरीशस्त्वां नत्वानर्च स नारद । आहूय च स्वतनयां त्वदङ्घ्र्योस्तामपातयत्
dṛṣṭvā mune girīśastvāṁ natvānarca sa nārada āhūya ca svatanayāṁ tvadaṅghryostāmapātayat
"Seeing you, O sage, the lord of mountains bowed and honored you, O Narada; and calling his own daughter, he made her fall at your feet.
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.71.3)
पुनर्नत्वा मुनीश त्वामुवाच हिमभूधरः । साञ्जलिः स्वविधिं मत्वा बहुसन्नतमस्तकः
punarnatvā munīśa tvāmuvāca himabhūdharaḥ sāñjaliḥ svavidhiṁ matvā bahusannatamastakaḥ
"Bowing to you again, O lord of sages, the mountain of snow spoke, with joined palms, considering it his own proper duty, his head bowed low repeatedly.
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.71.4)
हिमालय उवाच । हे मुने नारद ज्ञानिन्ब्रह्मपुत्रवर प्रभो । सर्वज्ञस्त्वं सकरुणः परोपकरणे रतः
himālaya uvāca he mune nārada jñāninbrahmaputravara prabho sarvajñastvaṁ sakaruṇaḥ paropakaraṇe rataḥ
Himalaya said: "O sage Narada, O knower, best of Brahma's sons, O Lord — you are all-knowing, compassionate, ever devoted to helping others.
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.71.5)
मत्सुताजातकं ब्रूहि गुणदोषसमुद्भवम् । कस्य प्रिया भाग्यवती भविष्यति सुता मम
matsutājātakaṁ brūhi guṇadoṣasamudbhavam kasya priyā bhāgyavatī bhaviṣyati sutā mama
"Tell me my daughter's horoscope, the arising of her merits and faults; whose beloved, fortunate one, will my daughter become?"
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.71.6)
ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्तो मुनिवर्य त्वं गिरीशेन हिमाद्रिणा । विलोक्य कालिकाहस्तं सर्वाङ्गं च विशेषतः
brahmovāca ityukto munivarya tvaṁ girīśena himādriṇā vilokya kālikāhastaṁ sarvāṅgaṁ ca viśeṣataḥ
Brahma said: "Thus addressed, O best of sages, by the lord of mountains, the mountain of snow, you looked at Kalika's hand and her whole body in particular.
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.71.7)
अवोचस्त्वं गिरिं तात कौतुकी वाग्विशारदः । ज्ञानी विदितवृत्तान्तो नारदः प्रीतमानसः
avocastvaṁ giriṁ tāta kautukī vāgviśāradaḥ jñānī viditavṛttānto nāradaḥ prītamānasaḥ
"You, dear one, curious, skilled in speech, wise, knowing the full matter, Narada, your mind pleased, spoke to the mountain.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.71.8)
नारद उवाच । एषा ते तनया मेने सुधांशोरिव वर्धिता । आद्या कला शैलराज सर्वलक्षणशालिनी
nārada uvāca eṣā te tanayā mene sudhāṁśoriva vardhitā ādyā kalā śailarāja sarvalakṣaṇaśālinī
Narada said: "This daughter of yours, O Mena, has grown like the very first digit of the moon; O king of mountains, she is endowed with every auspicious mark.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.71.9)
स्वपतेः सुखदात्यन्तं पित्रोः कीर्तिविवर्धिनी । महासाध्वी च सर्वासु महानन्दकरी सदा
svapateḥ sukhadātyantaṁ pitroḥ kīrtivivardhinī mahāsādhvī ca sarvāsu mahānandakarī sadā
"She shall bring the greatest joy to her husband, increasing the fame of her parents; a most virtuous woman among all, ever a bringer of great joy.
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.71.10)
सुलक्षणानि सर्वाणि त्वत्सुतायाः करे गिरे । एका विलक्षणा रेखा तत्फलं शृणु तत्त्वतः
sulakṣaṇāni sarvāṇi tvatsutāyāḥ kare gire ekā vilakṣaṇā rekhā tatphalaṁ śṛṇu tattvataḥ
"O mountain, all auspicious marks are on your daughter's hand; but there is one unusual line — hear its true meaning.
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.71.11)
योगी नग्नोऽगुणोऽकामी मातृतातविवर्जितः । अमानोऽशिववेषश्च पतिरस्याः किलेदृशः
yogī nagno'guṇo'kāmī mātṛtātavivarjitaḥ amāno'śivaveṣaśca patirasyāḥ kiledṛśaḥ
"A yogi, naked, without qualities, without desire, without father or mother, without honor, of inauspicious appearance — such indeed shall be her husband."
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.71.12)
ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्ते हि सत्यं मत्वा च दम्पती । मेना हिमाचलश्चापि दुःखितौ तौ बभूवतुः
brahmovāca ityākarṇya vacaste hi satyaṁ matvā ca dampatī menā himācalaścāpi duḥkhitau tau babhūvatuḥ
Brahma said: "Hearing your words, and taking them to be true, that couple, Mena and Himachal both, became grief-stricken.
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.71.13)
शिवाकर्ण्यवचस्ते हि तादृशं जगदम्बिका । लक्षणैस्तं शिवं मत्वा जहर्षाति मुने हृदि
śivākarṇyavacaste hi tādṛśaṁ jagadambikā lakṣaṇaistaṁ śivaṁ matvā jaharṣāti mune hṛdi
"But the auspicious one, the Mother of the universe, hearing your such words, and recognizing from those very marks that it was Shiva, rejoiced greatly in her heart, O sage.
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.71.14)
न मृषा नारदवचस्त्विति सञ्चिन्त्य सा शिवा । स्नेहं शिवपदद्वन्द्वे चकाराति हृदा तदा
na mṛṣā nāradavacastviti sañcintya sā śivā snehaṁ śivapadadvandve cakārāti hṛdā tadā
"'Narada's word is not false,' thinking thus, that auspicious girl then, with all her heart, felt great love for the twin feet of Shiva.
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.71.15)
उवाच दुखितः शैलस्त्वां तदा हृदि नारद । कमुपायं मुने कुर्यामतिदुःखमभूदिति
uvāca dukhitaḥ śailastvāṁ tadā hṛdi nārada kamupāyaṁ mune kuryāmatiduḥkhamabhūditi
"The grieving mountain then spoke to you, O Narada, from his heart: 'O sage, what remedy shall I take? Great sorrow has come upon me.'
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.71.16)
तच्छ्रुत्वा त्वं मुने प्रात्थ महाकौतुककारकः । हिमाचलं शुभैर्वाक्यैर्हर्षयन्वाग्विशारदः
tacchrutvā tvaṁ mune prāttha mahākautukakārakaḥ himācalaṁ śubhairvākyairharṣayanvāgviśāradaḥ
"Hearing that, O sage, you, the great worker of wonders, skilled in speech, spoke, cheering Himachal with auspicious words.
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.71.17)
नारद उवाच । स्नेहाच्छृणु गिरे वाक्यं मम सत्यं मृषा न हि । कररेखा ब्रह्मलिपिर्न मृषा भवति ध्रुवम्
nārada uvāca snehācchṛṇu gire vākyaṁ mama satyaṁ mṛṣā na hi kararekhā brahmalipirna mṛṣā bhavati dhruvam
Narada said: "Out of affection, hear my word, O mountain — it is true, not false; the lines of the hand are Brahma's own writing, they surely do not prove false.
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.71.18)
तादृशोऽस्याः पतिः शैल भविष्यति न संशयः । तत्रोपायं शृणु प्रीत्या यं कृत्वा लप्स्यसे सुखम्
tādṛśo'syāḥ patiḥ śaila bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ tatropāyaṁ śṛṇu prītyā yaṁ kṛtvā lapsyase sukham
"Such indeed shall be her husband, O mountain, without doubt; but hear now, with delight, the remedy by which, having applied it, you shall attain happiness.
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.71.19)
तादृशोऽस्ति वरः शम्भुः लीलारूपधरः प्रभुः । कुलक्षणानि सर्वाणि तत्र तुल्यानि सद्गुणैः
tādṛśo'sti varaḥ śambhuḥ līlārūpadharaḥ prabhuḥ kulakṣaṇāni sarvāṇi tatra tulyāni sadguṇaiḥ
"There does exist such a bridegroom — Shambhu, the Lord, who assumes such forms in play; all these seemingly ill marks are there, in fact, equal to good qualities.
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.71.20)
प्रभौ दोषो न दुःखाय दुःखदोऽत्यप्रभौ हि सः । रविपावकगङ्गानां तत्र ज्ञेया निदर्शना
prabhau doṣo na duḥkhāya duḥkhado'tyaprabhau hi saḥ ravipāvakagaṅgānāṁ tatra jñeyā nidarśanā
"In a lord, a seeming fault is not for sorrow; it brings sorrow only in one who is not truly a lord; here the illustration of the sun, of fire, and of the Ganga should be understood.
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.71.21)
तस्माच्छिवाय कन्यां स्वां शिवां देहि विवेकतः । शिवः सर्वेश्वरः सेव्योऽविकारी प्रभुरव्ययः
tasmācchivāya kanyāṁ svāṁ śivāṁ dehi vivekataḥ śivaḥ sarveśvaraḥ sevyo'vikārī prabhuravyayaḥ
"Therefore give your auspicious daughter to Shiva, with discernment; Shiva is the Lord of all, worthy of service, unchanging, the imperishable Lord.
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.71.22)
शीघ्रप्रसादः स शिवः तां ग्रहीष्यत्यसंशयम् । तपःसाध्यो विशेषेण यदि कुर्याच्छिवा तपः
śīghraprasādaḥ sa śivaḥ tāṁ grahīṣyatyasaṁśayam tapaḥsādhyo viśeṣeṇa yadi kuryācchivā tapaḥ
"That Shiva, swift to show grace, shall surely accept her, without doubt; he is especially attainable through austerity, if the auspicious one performs austerity.
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.71.23)
सर्वथा सुसमर्थो हि स शिवः सकलेश्वरः । कुलिशस्यापि विध्वंसी ब्रह्माधीनः सुखप्रदः
sarvathā susamartho hi sa śivaḥ sakaleśvaraḥ kuliśasyāpi vidhvaṁsī brahmādhīnaḥ sukhapradaḥ
"In every way that Shiva, Lord of all, is fully capable; destroyer even of the thunderbolt itself, subject only to Brahman, the bestower of happiness."
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.71.24)
ब्रह्मोवाच इत्युक्त्वा त्वं पुनस्तात कौतुकी ब्रह्मविन्मुने । शैलराजमवोचो हि हर्षयन्वचनैः शुभैः
brahmovāca ityuktvā tvaṁ punastāta kautukī brahmavinmune śailarājamavoco hi harṣayanvacanaiḥ śubhaiḥ
Brahma said: "Having said this, you again, dear one, curious, O sage who knows Brahman, spoke to the king of mountains, cheering him with auspicious words.
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.71.25)
भाविनी दयिता शम्भोः सानुकूला सदा हरे । महासाध्वी सुव्रता च पित्रोः सुखविवर्धिनी
bhāvinī dayitā śambhoḥ sānukūlā sadā hare mahāsādhvī suvratā ca pitroḥ sukhavivardhinī
"She shall become Shambhu's beloved, ever devoted to Hara; a most virtuous woman, of good vows, ever increasing her parents' happiness.
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.71.26)
शम्भोश्चित्तं वशे चैषा करिष्यति तपस्विनी । स चाप्येनामृते योषां न ह्यन्यामुद्वहिष्यति
śambhościttaṁ vaśe caiṣā kariṣyati tapasvinī sa cāpyenāmṛte yoṣāṁ na hyanyāmudvahiṣyati
"This ascetic girl shall bring Shambhu's mind under her sway; and he too, apart from her, shall not take any other woman in marriage.
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.71.27)
एतयोः सदृशं प्रेम न कस्याप्येव तादृशम् । भूतं वा भविता वापि नाधुना च प्रवर्तते
etayoḥ sadṛśaṁ prema na kasyāpyeva tādṛśam bhūtaṁ vā bhavitā vāpi nādhunā ca pravartate
"A love like theirs has never existed for anyone else, nor shall it ever be — neither in the past, nor in the future, nor does it exist now.
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.71.28)
अनयोः सुरकार्याणि कर्तव्यानि मृतानि च । यानि यानि नगश्रेष्ठ जीवितानि पुनः पुनः
anayoḥ surakāryāṇi kartavyāni mṛtāni ca yāni yāni nagaśreṣṭha jīvitāni punaḥ punaḥ
"O best of mountains, by these two shall be accomplished all the works of the gods — whatever tasks lie dead, they shall be brought back to life, again and again.
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.71.29)
अनया कन्यया तेऽद्रे अर्धनारीश्वरो हरः । भविष्यति तथा हर्षदिनयोर्मिलितं पुनः
anayā kanyayā te'dre ardhanārīśvaro haraḥ bhaviṣyati tathā harṣadinayormilitaṁ punaḥ
"O mountain, through this daughter of yours, Hara shall become Ardhanarishvara, Lord Half-Woman; thus joy shall come to both, being united once more.
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.71.30)
शरीरार्धं हरस्यैषा हरिष्यति सुता तव । तपः प्रभावात्सन्तोष्य महेशं सकलेश्वरम्
śarīrārdhaṁ harasyaiṣā hariṣyati sutā tava tapaḥ prabhāvātsantoṣya maheśaṁ sakaleśvaram
"This daughter of yours shall take half of Hara's own body, by the power of her austerity, having pleased Mahesha, the Lord of all.
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.71.31)
स्वर्णगौरी सुवर्णाभा तपसा तोष्य तं हरम् । विद्युद्गौरतमा चेयं तव पुत्री भविष्यति
svarṇagaurī suvarṇābhā tapasā toṣya taṁ haram vidyudgauratamā ceyaṁ tava putrī bhaviṣyati
"Golden-fair, of golden hue, having pleased that Hara through austerity, this daughter of yours, fairer than lightning, shall become.
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.71.32)
गौरीति नाम्ना कन्या तु ख्यातिमेषा गमिष्यति । सर्वदेवगणैः पूज्या हरिब्रह्मादिभिस्तथा
gaurīti nāmnā kanyā tu khyātimeṣā gamiṣyati sarvadevagaṇaiḥ pūjyā haribrahmādibhistathā
"This girl shall become famed by the name 'Gauri', worshipped by all the hosts of gods, and likewise by Hari, Brahma, and the rest.
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.71.33)
नान्यस्मै त्वमिमां दातुमिहार्हसि नगोत्तम । इदं चोपांशु देवानां न प्रकाश्यं कदाचन
nānyasmai tvamimāṁ dātumihārhasi nagottama idaṁ copāṁśu devānāṁ na prakāśyaṁ kadācana
"O best of mountains, you should not give her to any other; and this matter should be kept secret among the gods, never to be revealed."
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.71.34)
ब्रह्मोवाच इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा देवर्षे तव नारद । उवाच हिमवान्वाक्यं मुने त्वां वाग्विशारदः
brahmovāca iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā devarṣe tava nārada uvāca himavānvākyaṁ mune tvāṁ vāgviśāradaḥ
Brahma said: "Hearing this word of yours, O divine sage Narada, Himavat, skilled in speech, spoke this word to you, O sage.
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.71.35)
हिमालय उवाच हे मुने नारद प्राज्ञ विज्ञप्तिं काञ्चिदेव हि । करोमि तां शृणु प्रीत्यातस्त्वं प्रमुदमावह
himālaya uvāca he mune nārada prājña vijñaptiṁ kāñcideva hi karomi tāṁ śṛṇu prītyātastvaṁ pramudamāvaha
Himalaya said: "O sage Narada, wise one, I make a certain petition indeed; hear it with delight, so that you may bring me joy.
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.71.36)
श्रूयते त्यक्तसङ्गः स महादेवो यतात्मवान् । तपश्चरति सन्नित्यं देवानामप्यगोचरः
śrūyate tyaktasaṅgaḥ sa mahādevo yatātmavān tapaścarati sannityaṁ devānāmapyagocaraḥ
"It is heard that that great Deva, having abandoned all attachment, self-controlled, ever performs austerity, unseen even by the gods.
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.71.37)
स कथं ध्यानमार्गस्थः परब्रह्मार्पितं मनः । भ्रंशयिष्यति देवर्षे तत्र मे संशयो महान्
sa kathaṁ dhyānamārgasthaḥ parabrahmārpitaṁ manaḥ bhraṁśayiṣyati devarṣe tatra me saṁśayo mahān
"How, O divine sage, established on the path of meditation, his mind offered up to the Supreme Brahman, will he let it fall? My doubt on this is great.
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.71.38)
अक्षरं परमं ब्रह्म प्रदीपकलिकोपमम् । सदाशिवाख्यं स्वं रूपं निर्विकारमजात्परम्
akṣaraṁ paramaṁ brahma pradīpakalikopamam sadāśivākhyaṁ svaṁ rūpaṁ nirvikāramajātparam
"The imperishable, supreme Brahman, like the flame of a lamp, known as Sadashiva, his own form unchanging, unborn, transcendent —
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.71.39)
निर्गुणं सगुणं तच्च निर्विशेषं निरीहकम् । अतः पश्यति सर्वत्र न तु बाह्यं निरीक्षते
nirguṇaṁ saguṇaṁ tacca nirviśeṣaṁ nirīhakam ataḥ paśyati sarvatra na tu bāhyaṁ nirīkṣate
"— that same reality, without qualities and with qualities, without distinction, without desire; therefore he sees everywhere, yet does not look upon the outer world.
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.71.40)
इति स श्रूयते नित्यं किन्नराणां मुखान्मुने । इहागतानां सुप्रीत्या किं तन्मिथ्यावचो ध्रुवम्
iti sa śrūyate nityaṁ kinnarāṇāṁ mukhānmune ihāgatānāṁ suprītyā kiṁ tanmithyāvaco dhruvam
"Thus he is ever heard of, O sage, from the mouths of the Kinnaras who come here with delight — could this then be, surely, a false report?
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.71.41)
विशेषतः श्रूयते स साक्षान्नाम्ना तथा हरः । समयं कृतवान्पूर्वं तन्मया गदितं शृणु
viśeṣataḥ śrūyate sa sākṣānnāmnā tathā haraḥ samayaṁ kṛtavānpūrvaṁ tanmayā gaditaṁ śṛṇu
"In particular, it is heard, directly, that Hara himself made a vow long ago; hear what I have to say of it.
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.71.42)
न त्वामृतेऽन्यां वरये दाक्षायणि सती प्रिये । भार्यार्थं न ग्रहीष्यामि सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते
na tvāmṛte'nyāṁ varaye dākṣāyaṇi satī priye bhāryārthaṁ na grahīṣyāmi satyametadbravīmi te
"'Other than you I shall choose no other, O daughter of Daksha, dear Sati; I shall take no other for a wife — this truth I tell you.'
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.71.43)
इति सत्या समं तेन पुरैव समयः कृतः । तस्यां मृतायां स कथं स्वयमन्यां ग्रहीष्यति
iti satyā samaṁ tena puraiva samayaḥ kṛtaḥ tasyāṁ mṛtāyāṁ sa kathaṁ svayamanyāṁ grahīṣyati
"This vow was made with Sati long ago; now that she has died, how shall he himself take another?"
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.71.44)
ब्रह्मोवाच इत्युक्त्वा स गिरिस्तूष्णीमास तस्य पुरस्तव । तदाकर्ण्याथ देवर्षे त्वं प्रावोचः सुतत्त्वतः
brahmovāca ityuktvā sa giristūṣṇīmāsa tasya purastava tadākarṇyātha devarṣe tvaṁ prāvocaḥ sutattvataḥ
Brahma said: "Having spoken thus, that mountain fell silent before you; hearing that, O divine sage, you then spoke, explaining the true matter.
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.71.45)
नारद उवाच न वै कार्या त्वया चिन्ता गिरिराज महामते । एषा तव सुता काली दक्षजा ह्यभवत्पुरा
nārada uvāca na vai kāryā tvayā cintā girirāja mahāmate eṣā tava sutā kālī dakṣajā hyabhavatpurā
Narada said: "O king of mountains, O wise one, you need not worry at all; this daughter of yours, Kali, was indeed formerly born as Daksha's daughter.
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.71.46)
सतीनामाभवत्तस्याः सर्वमङ्गलदं सदा । सती सा वै दक्षकन्या भूत्वा रुद्रप्रियाभवत्
satīnāmābhavattasyāḥ sarvamaṅgaladaṁ sadā satī sā vai dakṣakanyā bhūtvā rudrapriyābhavat
"She was ever the giver of all auspiciousness among virtuous women; that Sati, having become Daksha's daughter, became Rudra's beloved.
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.71.47)
पितुर्यज्ञे तथा प्राप्यानादरं शङ्करस्य च । तं दृष्ट्वा कोपमाधायात्याक्षीद्देहं च सा सती
pituryajñe tathā prāpyānādaraṁ śaṅkarasya ca taṁ dṛṣṭvā kopamādhāyātyākṣīddehaṁ ca sā satī
"Then, at her father's sacrifice, having received dishonor toward Shankara too, seeing this, filled with wrath, that Sati gave up her body.
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.71.48)
पुनःसैव समुत्पन्ना तव गेहेऽम्बिका शिवा । पार्वती हरपत्नीयं भविष्यति न संशयः
punaḥsaiva samutpannā tava gehe'mbikā śivā pārvatī harapatnīyaṁ bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ
"That very Mother, the auspicious one, has been born again in your house; this Parvati shall become Hara's wife, without doubt.
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.71.49)
एतत्सर्वं विस्तरात्त्वं प्रोक्तवान्भूभृते मुने । पूर्वरूपं चरित्रं च पार्वत्याः प्रीतिवर्धनम्
etatsarvaṁ vistarāttvaṁ proktavānbhūbhṛte mune pūrvarūpaṁ caritraṁ ca pārvatyāḥ prītivardhanam
"O sage, you related all this in full detail to the mountain-lord — Parvati's former form and her history, increasing his love for her.
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.71.50)
तं सर्वं पूर्ववृत्तान्तं काल्या मुनिमुखाद्गिरिः । श्रुत्वा सपुत्रदारः स तदा निःसंशयोऽभवत्
taṁ sarvaṁ pūrvavṛttāntaṁ kālyā munimukhādgiriḥ śrutvā saputradāraḥ sa tadā niḥsaṁśayo'bhavat
"Having heard from the sage's mouth that whole former account of Kali, the mountain, together with his sons and wife, then became free of all doubt.
Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.71.51)
ततः काली कथां श्रुत्वा नारदस्य मुखात्तदा । लज्जयाधोमुखी भूत्वा स्मितविस्तारितानना
tataḥ kālī kathāṁ śrutvā nāradasya mukhāttadā lajjayādhomukhī bhūtvā smitavistāritānanā
"Then Kali, having heard the story from Narada's mouth, became downcast with shyness, her face spreading into a smile.
Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.71.52)
करेण तां तु संस्पृश्य श्रुत्वा तच्चरितं गिरिः । मूर्ध्नि शश्वत्तथाघ्राय स्वासनान्ते न्यवेशयत्
kareṇa tāṁ tu saṁspṛśya śrutvā taccaritaṁ giriḥ mūrdhni śaśvattathāghrāya svāsanānte nyaveśayat
"Having heard that account, the mountain touched her with his hand, kissed her repeatedly on the head, and seated her beside his own seat.
Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.71.53)
ततस्त्वं तां पुनर्दृष्ट्वाऽवोचस्तत्र स्थितां मुने । हर्षयन् गिरिराजं च मेनकां तनयैः सह
tatastvaṁ tāṁ punardṛṣṭvā'vocastatra sthitāṁ mune harṣayan girirājaṁ ca menakāṁ tanayaiḥ saha
"Then, O sage, seeing her again seated there, you spoke, gladdening the king of mountains and Mena together with her sons.
Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.71.54)
सिंहासनं तु किन्त्वस्याः शैलराज भवेदतः । शम्भोरूरौ सदैतस्या आसनं तु भविष्यति
siṁhāsanaṁ tu kintvasyāḥ śailarāja bhavedataḥ śambhorūrau sadaitasyā āsanaṁ tu bhaviṣyati
"'O king of mountains, but what throne shall be hers? Her seat shall ever be upon Shambhu's own lap.'
Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.71.55)
हरेरूर्वासनं प्राप्य तनया तव सन्ततम् । न यत्र कस्यचिद् दृष्टिर्मानसं वा गमिष्यति
harerūrvāsanaṁ prāpya tanayā tava santatam na yatra kasyacid dṛṣṭirmānasaṁ vā gamiṣyati
"'Having obtained the seat of Hara's lap, your daughter shall ever remain there, a place where the gaze or the mind of no other shall ever go.'"
Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.71.56)
ब्रह्मोवाच इति वचनमुदारं नारद त्वं गिरीशं त्रिदिवमगम उक्त्वा तत्क्षणादेव प्रीत्या । गिरिपतिरपि चित्ते चारुसम्मोदयुक्तः स्वगृहमगमदेवं सर्वसम्पत्समृद्धम्
brahmovāca iti vacanamudāraṁ nārada tvaṁ girīśaṁ tridivamagama uktvā tatkṣaṇādeva prītyā giripatirapi citte cārusammodayuktaḥ svagṛhamagamadevaṁ sarvasampatsamṛddham
Brahma said: "O Narada, having spoken this generous word to the lord of mountains, you went at that very moment, with delight, to heaven; and the lord of the mountain too, his heart filled with fine joy, went thus to his own home, abounding in every prosperity."
