Tarakasura's Austerity and Kingdom

Chapter 77All chaptersChapter 79

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.78.1)

brahmovāca atha sā garbhamādhatta varāṅgī tatpurādarāt sa vavardhābhyantare hi bahuvarṣaiḥ sutejasā

Brahma said: "Then Varangi, with due reverence, conceived from him; and that child grew within her womb over many years, with great splendor."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.78.2)

tataḥ sā samaye pūrṇe varāṅgī suṣuve sutam mahākāyaṁ mahāvīryaṁ prajvalantaṁ diśo daśa

Then, when the time was complete, Varangi gave birth to a son — vast of body, of great might, blazing forth in all ten directions.

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.78.3)

tadaiva ca mahotpātā babhūvurduḥkhahetavaḥ jāyamāne sute tasminvarāṅgyāḥ suraduḥkhade

At that very moment, as that son of Varangi — destined to bring the gods suffering — was born, many great portents, harbingers of sorrow, appeared.

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.78.4)

divi bhuvyantarikṣe ca sarvalokabhayaṅkarāḥ anarthasūcakāstāta trividhāḥ tānbravīmyaham

In the sky, on earth, and in the atmosphere, fearsome to every world, threefold signs of calamity appeared, O son — I shall now describe them to you.

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.78.5)

solkāścāśanayaḥ peturmahāśabdā bhayaṅkarāḥ udayaṁ cakrurutkṛṣṭāḥ ketavo duḥkhadāyakāḥ

Meteors fell trailing fire, thunderbolts crashed with terrifying sound, and fierce, sorrow-bringing comets rose in the sky.

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.78.6)

cacāla vasudhā sādrirjajvaluḥ sakalā diśaḥ cukṣubhuḥ saritaḥ sarvāḥ sāgarāśca viśeṣataḥ

The earth, together with its mountains, shook; every direction blazed; all the rivers grew turbulent, and the oceans especially.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.78.7)

hūtkārānīrayan ghorānkharasparśo marudvavau unmūlayanmahāvṛkṣānvātyānīko rajodhvajaḥ

Winds, harsh to the touch, howled forth dreadful sounds, and whirlwinds, bannered with dust, tore great trees up by their roots.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.78.8)

sarāhvoḥsūryavidhvostu muhuḥ paridhayo'bhavan mahābhayasya viprendra sūcakāḥsukhahārakāḥ

Repeated halos formed, O foremost of brahmins, around the discs of moon and sun — signs of great terror, robbers of happiness.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.78.9)

mahīdhravivarebhyaśca nirghātā bhayasūcakāḥ rathanirhrādatulyāśca jajñire'vasare tataḥ

From the caverns of the mountains, thunderous rumblings — harbingers of fear, resembling the roar of chariots — arose at that time.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.78.10)

sṛgālolūkaṭaṅkārairvamantyo mukhato'nalam antargrāmeṣu vikaṭaṁ praṇeduraśivāḥ śivāḥ

Jackals and owls, with their harsh cries, seeming to belch fire from their mouths, howled fearfully within the villages, ill-omened as they were.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.78.11)

yatastato grāmasiṁhā unnamayya śirodharām saṅgītavadrodanavadvyamuñcanvividhānravān

Here and there the village dogs, raising their necks, let out varied cries, at times like song, at times like weeping.

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.78.12)

khārkārarabhasā mattāḥ khurairghnanto rasāṁ kharāḥ varūthaśaḥ tadā tāta paryadhāvannitastataḥ

Donkeys, O son, maddened, braying furiously, striking the earth with their hooves, ran about here and there in herds.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.78.13)

khagā udapatannīḍādrāsabhatrastamānasāḥ krośanto vyagracittāśca sthitimāpurna kutracit

Birds flew up suddenly from their nests, their minds seized with terror, crying out, restless in heart, finding no place to settle.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.78.14)

śakṛnmūtramakārṣuśca goṣṭhe'raṇye bhayākulāḥ babhramuḥ sthitimāpurno paśavastāḍitā iva

Cattle, terrified, voided dung and urine both in the cowshed and in the forest; they wandered restlessly, finding no rest, as though being beaten.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.78.15)

gāvo'trasannasṛgdohā bāṣpanetrā bhayākulāḥ toyadā abhavaṁstatra bhayadāḥ pūyavarṣiṇaḥ

Cows trembled in fear, giving milk mixed with blood, their eyes brimming with tears; and there the rain-clouds turned terrifying, raining down pus.

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.78.16)

vyarudanpratimāstatra devānāmutpatiṣṇavaḥ vinānilaṁ drumāḥ peturgrahayuddhaṁ babhūva khe

There the images of the gods wept, seeming almost ready to rise up; trees fell though no wind blew, and in the sky a war of the planets broke out.

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.78.17)

ityādikā bahūtpātā jajñire munisattama ajñānino janāstatra menire viśvasamplavam

Such, O foremost of sages, were the many portents that occurred; and the unwitting people there believed that the whole universe was about to be engulfed in dissolution.

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.78.18)

atha prajāpatirnāmākarottasyāsurasya vai tāraketi vicāryaiva kaśyapo hi mahaujasaḥ

Then Prajapati Kashyapa, of great power, having thought it over, gave that demon the name Taraka.

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.78.19)

mahāvīraḥ sa sahasā vyajyamānātmapauruṣaḥ vavṛdhe'tyaśmasāreṇa kāyenādripatiryathā

That great hero, his own valor swiftly manifesting itself, grew with a body hard as adamant, like the very lord of mountains.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.78.20)

atho sa tārako daityo mahābalaparākramaḥ tapaḥ kartuṁ jananyāścājñāṁ yayāce mahāmanāḥ

Then that demon Taraka, of immense strength and valor, of noble mind, sought his mother's leave to undertake austerity.

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.78.21)

prāptājñaḥ sa mahāmāyī māyināmapi mohakaḥ sarvadevajayaṁ kartuṁ tapo'rthaṁ mana ādadhe

Having gained her leave, that great master of illusion, able to bewilder even sorcerers, fixed his mind upon austerity, with the aim of conquering all the gods.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.78.22)

madhorvanamupāgamya gurvājñāpratipālakaḥ vidhimuddiśya vidhivattapastepe sudāruṇam

Coming to Madhuvana, faithful to his guru's command, he performed a most severe austerity, according to rule, directed toward Vidhi, Brahma.

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.78.23)

ūrdhvabāhuścaikapādo raviṁ paśyansa cakṣuṣā śatavarṣaṁ tapaścakre dṛḍhacitto dṛḍhavrataḥ

With his arms raised, standing upon one foot, gazing at the sun with open eyes, firm of mind and firm in his vow, he practiced austerity for a hundred years.

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.78.24)

aṅguṣṭhena bhuvaṁ spṛṣṭvā śatavarṣaṁ ca tādṛśaḥ tepe tapo dṛḍhātmā sa tārako'surarāṭ prabhuḥ

Touching the earth only with the tip of his toe, that firm-souled Taraka, lord and king of demons, performed such austerity for another hundred years.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.78.25)

śatavarṣaṁ jalaṁ prāśnan śatavarṣaṁ ca vāyubhuk śatavarṣaṁ jale tiṣṭhañcchataṁ ca sthaṇḍile'tapat

For a hundred years he lived on water alone; for a hundred years on air alone; for a hundred years he stood in water; and for a hundred years more he practiced austerity upon the bare earth.

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.78.26)

śatavarṣaṁ tathā cāgnau śatavarṣamadhomukhaḥ śatavarṣaṁ tu hastasya talena ca bhuvaṁ sthitaḥ

Likewise, for a hundred years amid fire; for a hundred years with his head hung downward; and for a hundred years he remained standing, his body resting upon the palm of his hand set on the ground.

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.78.27)

śatavarṣaṁ tu vṛkṣasya śākhāmālambya vai mune pādābhyāṁ śucidhūmaṁ hi pibaṁścādhomukhastathā

For a hundred years, O sage, he hung suspended from a tree branch, head downward, drinking pure smoke through his very feet.

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.78.28)

evaṁ kaṣṭataraṁ tepe sutapaḥ sa tu daityarāṭ kāmamuddiśya vidhivacchṛṇvatāmapi dussaham

Thus that lord of demons, aiming at his desired goal, performed ever more difficult austerity according to rule — a discipline unbearable even for those who merely heard of it.

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.78.29)

tatraivaṁ tapatastasya mahattejo vinissṛtam śirasaḥ sarvasaṁsarpi mahopadravakṛnmune

As he practiced such austerity there, a great radiance issued from his head, spreading everywhere and causing great disturbance, O sage.

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.78.30)

tenaiva devalokāste dagdhaprāyā babhūvire abhito duḥkhamāpannāḥ sarve devarṣayo mune

By that very radiance, the worlds of the gods became almost consumed by fire, and, O sage, all the gods and sages everywhere fell into distress.

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.78.31)

indraśca bhayamāpede'dhikaṁ deveśvarastadā tapasyatyadya kaścidvai matpadaṁ dharṣayiṣyati

Indra, lord of the gods, then fell into deep fear, thinking: "Someone is performing austerity today who will surely seize my very throne."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.78.32)

akāṇḍe caiva brahmāṇḍaṁ saṁhariṣyatyayaṁ prabhuḥ iti saṁśayamāpannā niścayaṁ nopalebhire

"And this being will, without warning, bring about the destruction of the very cosmos" — so thinking, they fell into doubt and could reach no firm conclusion.

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.78.33)

tataḥ sarve susammantrya mithaste nirjararṣayaḥ mallokamagamanbhītā dīnā māṁ samupasthitāḥ

Then, having deliberated carefully among themselves, all those gods and sages, afraid and wretched, came to my world and presented themselves before me.

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.78.34)

māṁ praṇamya susaṁstūya sarve te kliṣṭacetasaḥ kṛtastvañjalayo mahyaṁ vṛttaṁ sarvaṁ nyavedayan

Bowing to me and praising me well, all of them, their hearts troubled, joined their palms and related to me the whole matter.

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.78.35)

ahaṁ sarvaṁ suniścitya kāraṇaṁ tasya saddhiyā varaṁ dātuṁ gatastatra yatra tapyati so'suraḥ

Having, with sound judgment, fully understood the cause of it all, I went there, to grant a boon, to where that demon was performing his austerity.

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.78.36)

avocaṁ vacanaṁ taṁ vai varaṁ brūhītyahaṁ mune tapastaptaṁ tvayā tīvraṁ nādeyaṁ vidyate tava

I said to him: "Ask a boon — the intense austerity you have performed leaves nothing that is beyond granting to you."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.78.37)

ityevaṁ madvacaḥ śrutvā tārakaḥ sa mahāsuraḥ māṁ praṇamya susaṁstūya varaṁ vavre'tidāruṇam

Hearing these words of mine, that great demon Taraka bowed to me, praised me well, and then chose a most terrible boon.

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.78.38)

tāraka uvāca tvayi prasanne varade kimasādhyaṁ bhavenmama ato yāce varaṁ tvattaḥ śṛṇu tanme pitāmaha

Taraka said: "With you, giver of boons, pleased with me, what could remain unattainable for me? Therefore, O grandsire, I ask a boon of you — hear it now."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.78.39)

yadi prasanno deveśa yadi deyo varo mama deyaṁ varadvayaṁ mahyaṁ kṛpāṁ kṛtvā mamopari

"If you are pleased, O lord of gods, and if a boon is truly to be given to me, then, showing me your favor, grant me two boons."

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.78.40)

tvayā ca nirmite loke sakale'sminmahāprabho mattulyo balavānnūnaṁ na bhavetko'pi vai pumān

"In this entire world fashioned by you, O great Lord, let there be, in truth, no man whatsoever equal to me in strength."

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.78.41)

śivavīryasamutpannaḥ putraḥsenāpatiryadā bhūtvā śastraṁ kṣipenmahyaṁ tadā me maraṇaṁ bhavet

"Let my death come only when a son, born of Shiva's own seed, becomes a general and hurls a weapon at me — and not otherwise."

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.78.42)

ityukto'tha tadā tena daityenāhaṁ munīśvara varaṁ ca tādṛśaṁ dattvā svalokamagamaṁ drutam

Thus addressed by that demon, O lord of sages, I granted him just such a boon, and swiftly returned to my own world.

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.78.43)

daityo'pi sa varaṁ labdhvā manasepsitamuttamam suprasannataro bhūtvā śoṇitākhyapuraṁ gataḥ

That demon too, having obtained the excellent boon his heart desired, became exceedingly pleased and went to the city named Shonitapura.

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.78.44)

abhiṣiktastadā rājye trailokyasyāsuraiḥ saha śukreṇa daityaguruṇājñayā me sa mahāsuraḥ

That great demon was then, by my own command, anointed to the sovereignty of the three worlds by the demons, together with Shukra, the guru of the demons.

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.78.45)

tatastu sa mahādaityo'bhavat trailokyanāyakaḥ svājñāṁ pravartayāmāsa pīḍayansacarācaram

Then that great demon became lord of the three worlds; he made his own decree prevail, oppressing all beings, both moving and unmoving.

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.78.46)

rājyaṁ cakāra vidhivattrilokasya sa tārakaḥ prajāśca pālayāmāsa pīḍayannirjarādikān

That Taraka duly governed the kingdom of the three worlds, ruling over its people even as he continued to oppress the gods and others.

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.78.47)

tataḥ sa tārako daityasteṣāṁ ratnānyupādade indrādilokapālānāṁ svato dattāni tadbhayāt

Then that demon Taraka took the jewels belonging to Indra and the other guardians of the world — treasures they had, out of fear of him, offered up on their own.

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.78.48)

indreṇairāvatastasya bhayāttasmai samarpitaḥ kubereṇa tadā dattā nidhayo navasaṅkhyakāḥ

Out of fear of him, Indra gave up his own elephant Airavata to him; and Kubera then handed over the nine treasures.

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.78.49)

varuṇena hayāḥ śubhrā ṛṣibhiḥ kāmakṛttathā indreṇoccaiḥ śravā divyo bhayāttasmai samarpitaḥ

Varuna gave white horses; the sages offered the wish-granting cow; and Indra, out of fear, presented him with the divine horse Uchchaihshravas.

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.78.50)

yatra yatra śubhaṁ vastu dṛṣṭaṁ tenāsureṇa hi tattadgṛhītaṁ tarasā nissārastribhavo'bhavat

Wherever that demon saw anything precious or fine, he seized it at once by force; and thus the three worlds became stripped bare of everything of worth.

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.78.51)

samudrāśca tathā ratnānyadustasmai bhayānmune akṛṣṭapacyāsītpṛthvī prajāḥ kāmadughākhilāḥ

The oceans too, O sage, out of fear yielded up their jewels to him; the earth bore crops without being ploughed, and all creatures became, as it were, wish-fulfilling cows for him.

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.78.52)

sūryaśca tapate tadvattadduḥkhaṁ na yathā bhavet candrastu prabhayā dṛśyo vāyuḥ sarvānukūlyavān

The sun shone in a way that caused him no distress at all; the moon remained visible in its full brightness; and the wind blew favorably for him in every direction.

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.78.53)

devānāṁ caiva yaddravyaṁ pitṝṇāṁ ca parasya ca tatsarvaṁ samupādattamasureṇa durātmanā

Whatever wealth belonged to the gods, to the ancestors, and to others besides — all of it was seized by that evil-souled demon.

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.78.54)

vaśīkṛtya sa lokāṁstrīnsvayamindro babhūva ha advitīyaḥ prabhuścāsīdrājyaṁ cakre'dbhutaṁ vaśī

Having subjugated the three worlds, he himself became their Indra; he alone became the unrivaled ruler, and, self-possessed, governed a wondrous kingdom.

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.78.55)

nissārya sakalāndevāndaityānasthāpayattataḥ svayaṁ niyojayāmāsa devayonin svakarmaṇi

Driving out all the gods, he thereupon set demons in their place, and himself put those of divine birth to work in his own service.

Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.78.56)

atha tadbādhitā devāḥ sarve śakrapurogamāḥ mune māṁ śaraṇaṁ jagmuranāthā ativihvalāḥ

Then, tormented by him, all the gods headed by Shakra, without protector and utterly overwhelmed, O sage, came to me seeking refuge.
