The Form of the Word-Brahman

Chapter 7All chaptersChapter 9

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.8.1)

brahmovāca evaṁ tayormuniśreṣṭha darśanaṁ kāṅkṣamāṇayoḥ vigarvayośca surayoḥ sadā nau sthitayormune

Brahma said: Thus, O foremost of sages, as we two gods, our pride now gone, both longed to behold him, and stood there continually.

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.8.2)

dayālurabhavacchambhurdīnānāṁ pratipālakaḥ garviṇāṁ garvahartā ca sarveṣāṁ prabhuravyayaḥ

Shambhu, the protector of the humble, the destroyer of the pride of the proud, the imperishable Lord of all, became compassionate.

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.8.3)

tadā samabhavattatra nādo vai śabdalakṣaṇaḥ omomiti suraśreṣṭhātsuvyaktaḥ plutalakṣaṇaḥ

Then there arose there a sound, of the very nature of Shabda — 'Om, Om' — clearly manifest, from that foremost of gods, drawn out in a prolonged tone.

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.8.4)

kimidaṁ tviti sañcintya mayā tiṣṭhanmahāsvanaḥ viṣṇuḥ sarvasurārādhyo nirvairastuṣṭacetasā

'What indeed is this?' — thinking thus, as that mighty sound continued, I stood there; and Vishnu, worshipped by all the gods, his enmity now gone, his mind at peace —

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.8.5)

liṅgasya dakṣiṇe bhāge tathāpaśyatsanātanam ādyaṁ varṇamakārākhyamukāraṁ cottare tataḥ

then beheld, on the right side of the Linga, the eternal first letter 'A'; and on its upper side, the letter 'U'.

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.8.6)

makāraṁ madhyataścaiva nādamante'sya comiti sūryamaṇḍalavad dṛṣṭvā varṇamādyaṁ tu dakṣiṇe

And in the middle, the letter 'M'; and at its end, the sound 'Om'. He beheld the first letter, on the right, as radiant like the orb of the sun.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.8.7)

uttare pāvakaprakhyamukāramṛṣisattama śītāṁśumaṇḍalaprakhyaṁ makāraṁ tasya madhyataḥ

O foremost of sages, he beheld on the upper side the letter 'U,' radiant like fire; and in its middle, the letter 'M,' radiant like the cool orb of the moon.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.8.8)

tasyopari tadāpaśyacchuddhasphaṭikasuprabham turīyātītamamalaṁ niṣkalaṁ nirupadravam

Above that, he then beheld a form radiant as pure crystal, beyond even the fourth state, stainless, without parts, free of affliction.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.8.9)

nirdvandvaṁ kevalaṁ śūnyaṁ bāhyābhyantaravarjitam sabāhyābhyantare caiva bāhyābhyantarasaṁsthitam

Free of dualities, absolute, void, devoid of both outer and inner; and yet also abiding both within and without, in the outer and the inner alike.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.8.10)

ādimadhyāntarahitamānandasyādikāraṇam satyamānandamamṛtaṁ paraṁ brahmaparāyaṇam

Without beginning, middle or end, the primal cause of bliss itself; the True, the Blissful, the Immortal, the Supreme, devoted wholly to Brahman.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.8.11)

kuta evātra sambhūtaḥ parīkṣāvo'gnisambhavam adho gamiṣyāmyanalastambhasyānupamasya ca

'From where indeed has this arisen here? Let us test this fiery manifestation; I shall go downward, to find the base of this peerless pillar of flame.'

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.8.12)

vedaśabdobhayāveśaṁ viśvātmānaṁ vyacintayat tadābhavadṛṣistatra ṛṣeḥ sāratamaḥ smṛtaḥ

He contemplated the Self of the universe, pervaded by both Veda and Shabda; then there arose there a sage, remembered as the very essence of all sages.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.8.13)

tenaiva ṛṣiṇā viṣṇurjñātavānparameśvaram mahādevaṁ paraṁ brahma śabdabrahmatanuṁ param

By that very sage, Vishnu came to know the Supreme Lord, Mahadeva, the Supreme Brahman, whose supreme body is the Shabda-Brahman.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.8.14)

cintayā rahito rudro vāco yanmanasā saha aprāpya tannivartante vācyastvekākṣareṇa saḥ

Rudra is free of thought; from him speech, together with mind, turns back without attaining him; yet he is spoken of by the single syllable.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.8.15)

ekākṣareṇa tadvākyamṛtaṁ paramakāraṇam satyamānandamamṛtaṁ paraṁ brahma parātparam

By that single syllable is uttered the eternal, the supreme cause; the True, the Blissful, the Immortal, the Supreme Brahman, beyond even the beyond.

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.8.16)

ekākṣarādakārākhyādbhagavānbījako'ṇḍajaḥ ekākṣarādukārākhyāddhariḥ paramakāraṇam

From the single syllable called 'A,' the Lord who is the seed, born of the cosmic egg (Brahma); from the single syllable called 'U,' Hari, the supreme cause.

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.8.17)

ekākṣarānmakārākhyādbhagavānnīlalohitaḥ sargakartā tvakārākhyo hyukārākhyastu mohakaḥ

From the single syllable called 'M,' the Lord Nilalohita. The one called 'A' is the creator; the one called 'U' is the deluder.

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.8.18)

makārākhyastu yo nityamanugrahakaro'bhavat makārākhyo vibhurbījī hyakāro bīja ucyate

The one called 'M' is he who is ever the giver of grace. The one called 'M' is the all-pervading possessor of the seed; the one called 'A' is called the seed.

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.8.19)

ukārākhyo hariryoniḥ pradhānapuruṣeśvaraḥ bījī ca bījaṁ tadyonirnādākhyaśca maheśvaraḥ

The one called 'U,' Hari, is the womb, the lord of Pradhana and Purusha. The possessor of the seed, the seed itself, and its womb — Maheshvara is called the very Nada of all three.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.8.20)

bījī vibhajya cātmānaṁ svecchayā tu vyavasthitaḥ asya liṅgādabhūd bījamakāro bījinaḥ prabhoḥ

The possessor of the seed, dividing himself, abided by his own will; from the mark of that Lord, the possessor of the seed, the seed 'A' came forth.

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.8.21)

ukārayonau niḥkṣiptamavardhata samantataḥ sauvarṇamabhavaccāṇḍamāvedyaṁ tadalakṣaṇam

Cast into the womb of 'U,' it grew on every side; it became a golden egg, unmanifest in its final form, yet to be revealed.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.8.22)

anekābdaṁ tathā cāpsu divyamaṇḍaṁ vyavasthitam tato varṣasahasrānte dvidhā kṛtamajodbhavam

For many years that divine egg abided in the waters; then, at the end of a thousand years, it was split in two, and from it the Unborn One arose.

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.8.23)

aṇḍamapsu sthitaṁ sākṣād vyāghāteneśvareṇa tu tathāsya suśubhaṁ haimaṁ kapālaṁ cordhvasaṁsthitam

The egg, abiding in the waters, was directly split by the Lord's own force; and its beautiful golden upper shell rose upward —

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.8.24)

jajñe sā dyaustadaparaṁ pṛthivī pañcalakṣaṇā tasmādaṇḍādbhavo jajñe kakārākhyaścaturmukhaḥ

and that became the heaven; and the other part became the earth, marked by its five qualities. From that egg, four-faced Bhava, called by the letter 'Ka,' was born.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.8.25)

sa sraṣṭā sarvalokānāṁ sa eva trividhaḥ prabhuḥ evamomomiti proktamityāhuryajuṣāṁ varāḥ

He is the creator of all the worlds; he alone is the Lord in his threefold form. Thus is 'Om, Om' explained — so declare the foremost knowers of the Yajus.

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.8.26)

yajuṣāṁ vacanaṁ śrutvā ṛcaḥ sāmāni sādaram evameva hare brahmannityāhuścāvayostadā

Having heard the declaration of the Yajus, the Rig and Sama too, reverently, declared the very same thing, O Brahman, to Hari and to me, then.

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.8.27)

tato vijñāya deveśaṁ yathāvacchaktisambhavaiḥ mantrairmaheśvaraṁ devaṁ tuṣṭāva sumahodayam

Then, having thus come to know the Lord of the gods, Vishnu praised that God Maheshvara, of the greatest glory, with mantras befitting his own power.

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.8.28)

etasminnantare'nyacca rūpamadbhutasundaram dadarśa ca mayā sārdhaṁ bhagavānviśvapālakaḥ

Meanwhile, together with me, the Lord, protector of the universe, beheld yet another form, wondrously beautiful.

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.8.29)

pañcavaktraṁ daśabhujaṁ gaurakarpūravanmune nānākāntisamāyuktaṁ nānābhūṣaṇabhūṣitam

O sage, five-faced, ten-armed, white as camphor, possessed of manifold radiances, adorned with manifold ornaments.

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.8.30)

mahodāraṁ mahāvīryaṁ mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇam taṁ dṛṣṭvā paramaṁ rūpaṁ kṛtārtho'bhūnmayā hariḥ

Of great nobility, of great power, marked with the signs of the Great Person. Beholding that supreme form, Hari, together with me, became fulfilled.

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.8.31)

atha prasanno bhagavānmaheśaḥ parameśvaraḥ divyaṁ śabdamayaṁ rūpamākhyāya prahasansthitaḥ

Then the Lord Mahesha, the Supreme Lord, being gracious, having declared his divine form made of sound, stood there smiling.

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.8.32)

'Ṝ' is his left cheek; 'Ḷ' and 'Ḹ' are his two nostrils. 'E' is the upper lip of that all-pervading Lord, and 'Ai' is his lower lip.

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.8.35)

okāraśca tathaukāro dantapaṅktidvayaṁ kramāt amastu tālunī tasya devadevasya śūlinaḥ

'O' and likewise 'Au' are, in due order, his two rows of teeth. The anusvara and visarga are the two palates of that God of gods, the trident-bearer.

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.8.36)

The five letters beginning with 'Ka' are his five right hands; likewise the five letters beginning with 'Ca' are his five left hands.

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.8.40)

evaṁ śabdamayaṁ rūpamaguṇasya guṇātmanaḥ dṛṣṭvā tamumayā sārdhaṁ kṛtārtho'bhūnmayā hariḥ

Thus beholding that form made of sound, of him who, though without qualities, has taken on the nature of qualities — together with Uma, and together with me, Hari became fulfilled.

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.8.41)

evaṁ dṛṣṭvā maheśānaṁ śabdabrahmatanuṁ śivam praṇamya ca mayā viṣṇuḥ punaścāpaśyadūrdhvataḥ

Having thus beheld Maheshana, Shiva, whose body is the Shabda-Brahman, and bowing to him together with me, Vishnu then again looked upward.

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.8.42)

It became again a bestower of wisdom, accomplishing all purposes of dharma; and a mantra arising from the Gayatri, working the power of subjugation.

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.8.44)

These became the cause of the universe's origin, growth and dissolution; of that supreme mantra there are sixty-one syllables in all.

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.8.48)

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.8.50)
