Kama's Destruction by Shiva

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.82.1)

नारद उवाच । ब्रह्मन्विधे महाभाग किं जातं तदनन्तरम् । कथय त्वं प्रसादेन तां कथां पापनाशिनीम्

nārada uvāca brahmanvidhe mahābhāga kiṁ jātaṁ tadanantaram kathaya tvaṁ prasādena tāṁ kathāṁ pāpanāśinīm

Narada said: "O most blessed Brahma, what happened after that? Graciously tell me that tale, which destroys all sin."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.82.2)

ब्रह्मोवाच । श्रूयतां सा कथा तात यज्जातं तदनन्तरम् । तव स्नेहात्प्रवक्ष्यामि शिवलीलां मुदावहाम्

brahmovāca śrūyatāṁ sā kathā tāta yajjātaṁ tadanantaram tava snehātpravakṣyāmi śivalīlāṁ mudāvahām

Brahma said: "O dear one, listen to what happened next. Out of my affection for you I shall relate that joy-bringing play of Shiva."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.82.3)

धैर्यस्य व्यसनं दृष्ट्वा महायोगी महेश्वरः । विचिचिन्त मनस्येवं विस्मितोऽति ततः परम्

dhairyasya vyasanaṁ dṛṣṭvā mahāyogī maheśvaraḥ vicicinta manasyevaṁ vismito'ti tataḥ param

Beholding his own steadfastness thus disturbed, the great yogin Maheshvara, filled with astonishment, began to reflect within his mind.

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.82.4)

शिव उवाच । किमु विघ्नाः समुत्पन्नाः कुर्वतस्तप उत्तमम् । केन मे विकृतं चित्तं कृतमत्र कुकर्मिणा

śiva uvāca kimu vighnāḥ samutpannāḥ kurvatastapa uttamam kena me vikṛtaṁ cittaṁ kṛtamatra kukarmiṇā

Shiva said: "What obstacle has arisen while I perform this excellent austerity? What evildoer has thus corrupted my mind?"

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.82.5)

कुवर्णनं मया प्रीत्या परस्त्र्युपरि वै कृतम् । जातो धर्मविरोधोऽत्र श्रुतिसीमा विलङ्घिता

kuvarṇanaṁ mayā prītyā parastryupari vai kṛtam jāto dharmavirodho'tra śrutisīmā vilaṅghitā

"Out of affection I described the limbs of another's woman -- here a violation of dharma has arisen, and the very bounds set by the scriptures have been transgressed."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.82.6)

ब्रह्मोवाच । विचिन्त्येत्थं महायोगी परमेशः सतां गतिः । दिशो विलोकयामास परितः शङ्कितस्तदा

brahmovāca vicintyetthaṁ mahāyogī parameśaḥ satāṁ gatiḥ diśo vilokayāmāsa paritaḥ śaṅkitastadā

Brahma said: Reflecting thus, that great yogin Parameshvara, refuge of the virtuous, looked about him on every side, filled with suspicion.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.82.7)

वामभागे स्थितं कामं ददर्शाकृष्टबाणकम् । स्वशरं क्षेप्तुकामं हि गर्वितं मूढचेतसम्

vāmabhāge sthitaṁ kāmaṁ dadarśākṛṣṭabāṇakam svaśaraṁ kṣeptukāmaṁ hi garvitaṁ mūḍhacetasam

He saw Kama standing at his left side, arrow drawn, proud and foolish of mind, about to loose his shaft.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.82.8)

तं दृष्ट्वा तादृशं कामं गिरीशस्य परात्मनः । सञ्जातः क्रोधसम्मर्दस्तत्क्षणादपि नारद

taṁ dṛṣṭvā tādṛśaṁ kāmaṁ girīśasya parātmanaḥ sañjātaḥ krodhasammardastatkṣaṇādapi nārada

O Narada, the very instant that supreme Girisha beheld Kama in that state, a tumult of anger arose in him at once.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.82.9)

कामः स्थितोऽन्तरिक्षे स धृत्वा तत्सशरं धनुः । चिक्षेपास्त्रं दुर्निवारममोघं शङ्करे मुने

kāmaḥ sthito'ntarikṣe sa dhṛtvā tatsaśaraṁ dhanuḥ cikṣepāstraṁ durnivāramamoghaṁ śaṅkare mune

O sage, Kama, standing in the sky, holding his bow with arrow set, loosed at Shankara his irresistible, unfailing weapon.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.82.10)

बभूवामोघमस्त्रं तु मोघं तत्परमात्मनि । समशाम्यत्ततस्तस्मिन्सङ्क्रुद्धे परमेश्वरे

babhūvāmoghamastraṁ tu moghaṁ tatparamātmani samaśāmyattatastasminsaṅkruddhe parameśvare

That unfailing weapon, reaching the Supreme Soul, became utterly futile; and even as Parameshvara grew wrathful, it was quenched within him.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.82.11)

मोघीभूते शिवे स्वेऽस्त्रे भयमापाशु मन्मथः । चकम्पे च पुरः स्थित्वा दृष्ट्वा मृत्युञ्जयं प्रभुम्

moghībhūte śive sve'stre bhayamāpāśu manmathaḥ cakampe ca puraḥ sthitvā dṛṣṭvā mṛtyuñjayaṁ prabhum

Seeing his own weapon rendered futile against Shiva, fear seized Manmatha at once; standing before that Lord who conquers death, he began to tremble.

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.82.12)

सस्मार त्रिदशान्सर्वान्शक्रादीन्भयविह्वलः । स स्मरो मुनिशार्दूल स्वप्रयासे निरर्थके

sasmāra tridaśānsarvānśakrādīnbhayavihvalaḥ sa smaro muniśārdūla svaprayāse nirarthake

O best of sages, overwhelmed with fear and knowing his own effort had come to nothing, Smara called to mind all the thirty gods, Indra and the rest.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.82.13)

कामेन सुस्मृता देवाः शक्राद्यास्ते मुनीश्वर । आययुः सकलास्ते हि शम्भुं नत्वा च तुष्टुवुः

kāmena susmṛtā devāḥ śakrādyāste munīśvara āyayuḥ sakalāste hi śambhuṁ natvā ca tuṣṭuvuḥ

O lord of sages, remembered thus by Kama, all those gods, Indra and the rest, came there, and, bowing to Shambhu, began to praise him.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.82.14)

स्तुतिं कुर्वत्सु देवेषु क्रुद्धस्याति हरस्य हि । तृतीयात्तस्य नेत्राद्वै निस्ससार ततो महान्

stutiṁ kurvatsu deveṣu kruddhasyāti harasya hi tṛtīyāttasya netrādvai nissasāra tato mahān

Even as the gods stood there praising him, from the third eye of Hara, whose fury was unabated, there issued forth a great and blazing power.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.82.15)

ललाटमध्यगात्तस्मात्सवह्निर्द्रुतसम्भवः । जज्वालोर्ध्वशिखो दीप्तः प्रलयाग्निसमप्रभः

lalāṭamadhyagāttasmātsavahnirdrutasambhavaḥ jajvālordhvaśikho dīptaḥ pralayāgnisamaprabhaḥ

From the middle of his forehead there sprang up swiftly, together with fire, a flame with its crest turned upward, blazing bright as the very fire of dissolution.

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.82.16)

उत्पत्य गगने तूर्णं निपत्य धरणी तले । भ्रामं भ्रामं स्वपरितः पपात मेदिनीं परि

utpatya gagane tūrṇaṁ nipatya dharaṇī tale bhrāmaṁ bhrāmaṁ svaparitaḥ papāta medinīṁ pari

Leaping up swiftly into the sky and then falling to the surface of the earth, whirling round and round on every side, it spread over the whole ground.

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.82.17)

भस्मसात्कृतवान्साधो मदनं तावदेव हि । यावच्च मरुतां वाचः क्षम्यतां क्षम्यतामिति

bhasmasātkṛtavānsādho madanaṁ tāvadeva hi yāvacca marutāṁ vācaḥ kṣamyatāṁ kṣamyatāmiti

O good one, in the very time it took the Maruts to cry out, "Forgive him, forgive him," it had already reduced Madana to ashes.

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.82.18)

हते तस्मिन्स्मरे वीरे देव दुःखमुपागताः । रुरुदुर्विह्वलाश्चातिक्रोशन्तः किमभूदिति

hate tasminsmare vīre deva duḥkhamupāgatāḥ rurudurvihvalāścātikrośantaḥ kimabhūditi

When that hero Smara was slain, the gods were overcome with sorrow; distraught, they wept and cried out, "What has happened here!"

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.82.19)

श्वेताङ्गा विकृतात्मा च गिरिराजसुता तदा । जगाम मन्दिरं स्वं च समादाय सखीजनम्

śvetāṅgā vikṛtātmā ca girirājasutā tadā jagāma mandiraṁ svaṁ ca samādāya sakhījanam

Then the mountain king's daughter, her fair limbs pale, her mind stricken with grief, took her companions and withdrew to her own dwelling.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.82.20)

क्षणमात्रं रतिस्तत्र विसंज्ञा साभवत्तदा । भर्तृमृत्युजदुःखेन पतिता सा मृता इव

kṣaṇamātraṁ ratistatra visaṁjñā sābhavattadā bhartṛmṛtyujaduḥkhena patitā sā mṛtā iva

Rati, for a moment, lost all consciousness there; struck down by the grief of her husband's death, she fell as though dead.

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.82.21)

जातायां चैव संज्ञायां रतिरत्यन्तविह्वला । विललाप तदा तत्रोच्चरन्ती विविधं वचः

jātāyāṁ caiva saṁjñāyāṁ ratiratyantavihvalā vilalāpa tadā tatroccarantī vividhaṁ vacaḥ

When her senses returned, Rati, utterly distraught, began to lament there, crying out many kinds of words.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.82.22)

रतिरुवाच । किं करोमि क्व गच्छामि किं कृतं दैवतैरिह । मत्स्वामिनं समाहूय नाशयामासुरुद्धतम्

ratiruvāca kiṁ karomi kva gacchāmi kiṁ kṛtaṁ daivatairiha matsvāminaṁ samāhūya nāśayāmāsuruddhatam

Rati said: "What shall I do, where shall I go? What have the gods done here! Having summoned my lord, they have arrogantly destroyed him."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.82.23)

हा हा नाथ स्मर स्वामिन्प्राणप्रिय सुखप्रद । इदं तु किमभूदत्र हा हा प्रिय प्रियेति च

hā hā nātha smara svāminprāṇapriya sukhaprada idaṁ tu kimabhūdatra hā hā priya priyeti ca

"Alas, alas, my lord! O Smara, my husband, dearer to me than life, my very giver of joy -- what has happened here? Alas, alas, my beloved, my beloved!"

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.82.24)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्थं विलपती सा तु वदन्ती बहुधा वचः । हस्तौ पादौ तदास्फाल्य केशानत्रोटयत्तदा

brahmovāca itthaṁ vilapatī sā tu vadantī bahudhā vacaḥ hastau pādau tadāsphālya keśānatroṭayattadā

Brahma said: Lamenting thus, uttering many kinds of words, she struck her hands and feet upon the ground and tore at her own hair.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.82.25)

तद्विलापं तदा श्रुत्वा तत्र सर्वे वनेचराः । अभवन्दुःखिताः सर्वे स्थावरा अपि नारद

tadvilāpaṁ tadā śrutvā tatra sarve vanecarāḥ abhavanduḥkhitāḥ sarve sthāvarā api nārada

O Narada, hearing her lament, every creature of the forest there, even the unmoving things themselves, fell into sorrow.

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.82.26)

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र देवाः शक्रादयोऽखिलाः । रतिमूचुः समाश्वास्य संस्मरन्तो महेश्वरम्

etasminnantare tatra devāḥ śakrādayo'khilāḥ ratimūcuḥ samāśvāsya saṁsmaranto maheśvaram

Meanwhile all the gods there, Indra and the rest, calling Maheshvara to mind, began to console Rati.

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.82.27)

देवा ऊचुः । किञ्चिद्भस्म गृहीत्वा तु रक्ष यत्नाद्भयं त्यज । जीवयिष्यति स स्वामी लप्स्यसे त्वं पुनः प्रियम्

devā ūcuḥ kiñcidbhasma gṛhītvā tu rakṣa yatnādbhayaṁ tyaja jīvayiṣyati sa svāmī lapsyase tvaṁ punaḥ priyam

The gods said: "Take some of this ash and carefully preserve it; give up your fear. That Lord will restore him to life, and you shall have your beloved again."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.82.28)

सुखदाता न कोऽप्यस्ति दुःखदाता न कश्चन । सर्वोऽपि स्वकृतं भुङ्क्ते देवान् शोचसि वै वृथा

sukhadātā na ko'pyasti duḥkhadātā na kaścana sarvo'pi svakṛtaṁ bhuṅkte devān śocasi vai vṛthā

"No one truly gives joy, no one truly gives sorrow -- each being reaps only what it has itself sown; you grieve against the gods in vain."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.82.29)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्याश्वास्य रतिं देवाः सर्वे शिवमुपागताः । सुप्रसाद्य शिवं भक्त्या वचनं चेदमब्रुवन्

brahmovāca ityāśvāsya ratiṁ devāḥ sarve śivamupāgatāḥ suprasādya śivaṁ bhaktyā vacanaṁ cedamabruvan

Brahma said: Having thus consoled Rati, all the gods went to Shiva, and, pleasing him well with devotion, spoke these words.

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.82.30)

देवा ऊचुः । भगवन् श्रूयतामेतद्वचनं नः शुभं प्रभो । कृपां कृत्वा महेशान शरणागतवत्सल

devā ūcuḥ bhagavan śrūyatāmetadvacanaṁ naḥ śubhaṁ prabho kṛpāṁ kṛtvā maheśāna śaraṇāgatavatsala

The gods said: "O Bhagavan, O Lord, hear this well-meant word of ours. O Mahesha, tender to those who seek refuge, show us your grace."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.82.31)

सुविचारय सुप्रीत्या कृतिं कामस्य शङ्कर । कामेनैतत्कृतं यत्र न स्वार्थं तन्महेश्वर

suvicāraya suprītyā kṛtiṁ kāmasya śaṅkara kāmenaitatkṛtaṁ yatra na svārthaṁ tanmaheśvara

"Consider well, O Shankara, and with love, what Kama has done. O Maheshvara, whatever Kama has done here was not for his own selfish end."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.82.32)

दुष्टेन पीडितैर्देवैस्तारकेणाखिलैर्विभो । कर्म तत्कारितं नाथ नान्यथा विद्धि शङ्कर

duṣṭena pīḍitairdevaistārakeṇākhilairvibho karma tatkāritaṁ nātha nānyathā viddhi śaṅkara

"O all-pervading one, it was we, all the gods, oppressed by the wicked Taraka, O lord, who caused this deed to be done by him -- think it not otherwise, O Shankara."

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.82.33)

रतिरेकाकिनी देव विलापं दुःखिता सती । करोति गिरिश त्वं च तामाश्वासय सर्वद

ratirekākinī deva vilāpaṁ duḥkhitā satī karoti giriśa tvaṁ ca tāmāśvāsaya sarvada

"O god, Rati, alone, sorrowful and virtuous, laments there even now; O Girisha, only you can console her forever."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.82.34)

संहारं कर्तुकामोऽसि क्रोधेनानेन शङ्कर । दैवतैः सह सर्वेषां हतवांस्तं यदि स्मरम्

saṁhāraṁ kartukāmo'si krodhenānena śaṅkara daivataiḥ saha sarveṣāṁ hatavāṁstaṁ yadi smaram

"O Shankara, if through this very wrath you wished to destroy all the gods together, you have as good as done so already by slaying Smara."

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.82.35)

दुःखं तस्या रतेर्दृष्ट्वा नष्टप्रायाश्च देवताः । तस्मात्त्वया च कर्तव्यं रत्याश्शोकापनोदनम्

duḥkhaṁ tasyā raterdṛṣṭvā naṣṭaprāyāśca devatāḥ tasmāttvayā ca kartavyaṁ ratyāśśokāpanodanam

"Seeing Rati's grief, the gods themselves are all but undone; therefore it falls to you alone to dispel Rati's sorrow."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.82.36)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तेषां प्रसन्नो भगवान् शिवः । देवानां सकलानां च वचनं चेदमब्रवीत्

brahmovāca ityākarṇya vacasteṣāṁ prasanno bhagavān śivaḥ devānāṁ sakalānāṁ ca vacanaṁ cedamabravīt

Brahma said: Hearing their words, the blessed Shiva was pleased, and he spoke these words to all the gods.

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.82.37)

शिव उवाच । देवाश्च ऋषयः सर्वे मद्वचः शृणुतादरात् । मत्कोपेन च यज्जातं तत्तथा नान्यथा भवेत्

śiva uvāca devāśca ṛṣayaḥ sarve madvacaḥ śṛṇutādarāt matkopena ca yajjātaṁ tattathā nānyathā bhavet

Shiva said: "O gods, and all you sages, listen to my word with reverence. What has come to pass through my anger shall remain so; it shall not be otherwise."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.82.38)

अनङ्गस्तावदेव स्यात्कामो रतिपतिः प्रभुः । यावच्चावतरेत्कृष्णो धरण्यां रुक्मिणीपतिः

anaṅgastāvadeva syātkāmo ratipatiḥ prabhuḥ yāvaccāvataretkṛṣṇo dharaṇyāṁ rukmiṇīpatiḥ

"Kama, Rati's lord and husband, shall remain without a body until Krishna, lord of Rukmini, descends upon the earth."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.82.39)

द्वारकायां यदा स्थित्वा पुत्रानुत्पादयिष्यति । तदा कृष्णस्तु रुक्मिण्यां काममुत्पादयिष्यति

dvārakāyāṁ yadā sthitvā putrānutpādayiṣyati tadā kṛṣṇastu rukmiṇyāṁ kāmamutpādayiṣyati

"When, settled in Dvaraka, he begets his sons, then Krishna shall beget Kama in Rukmini."

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.82.40)

प्रद्युम्नं नाम तस्यैव भविष्यति न संशयः । जातमात्रं तु तं पुत्रं शम्बरः संहरिष्यति

pradyumnaṁ nāma tasyaiva bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ jātamātraṁ tu taṁ putraṁ śambaraḥ saṁhariṣyati

"That son shall surely be named Pradyumna, but the very moment he is born, Shambara will steal him away."

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.82.41)

हृत्वा प्रास्य समुद्रं तं शम्बरो दानवोत्तमः । मृतं ज्ञात्वा वृथा मूढो नगरं स्वं गमिष्यति

hṛtvā prāsya samudraṁ taṁ śambaro dānavottamaḥ mṛtaṁ jñātvā vṛthā mūḍho nagaraṁ svaṁ gamiṣyati

"Shambara, best of demons, will carry him off and cast him into the ocean, and, foolishly believing him dead, will return in vain to his own city."

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.82.42)

तावच्च नगरं तस्य रते स्थेयं यथासुखम् । तत्रैव स्वपतेः प्राप्तिः प्रद्युम्नस्य भविष्यति

tāvacca nagaraṁ tasya rate stheyaṁ yathāsukham tatraiva svapateḥ prāptiḥ pradyumnasya bhaviṣyati

"Until that time, O Rati, you too shall dwell happily in that very city; there itself you shall regain your husband, Pradyumna."

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.82.43)

तत्र कामो मिलित्वा तं हत्वा शम्बरमाहवे । भविष्यति सुखी देवाः प्रद्युम्नाख्यः स्वकामिनीम्

tatra kāmo militvā taṁ hatvā śambaramāhave bhaviṣyati sukhī devāḥ pradyumnākhyaḥ svakāminīm

"There, Kama, thus reunited, shall slay Shambara in battle, and, O gods, as Pradyumna, he shall happily win back his own beloved."

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.82.44)

तदीयं चैव यद् द्रव्यं नीत्वा स नगरं पुनः । गमिष्यति तया सार्धं देवाः सत्यं वचो मम

tadīyaṁ caiva yad dravyaṁ nītvā sa nagaraṁ punaḥ gamiṣyati tayā sārdhaṁ devāḥ satyaṁ vaco mama

"Taking with him all of Shambara's wealth, he shall return again to that city together with her -- O gods, this is my true word."

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.82.45)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इति श्रुत्वा वचः शम्भोर्देवा ऊचुः प्रणम्य तम् । किञ्चिदुच्छ्वसिताश्चित्ते करौ बद्ध्वा नताङ्गकाः

brahmovāca iti śrutvā vacaḥ śambhordevā ūcuḥ praṇamya tam kiñciducchvasitāścitte karau baddhvā natāṅgakāḥ

Brahma said: Having heard Shambhu's words, the gods bowed to him, and, their hearts somewhat eased, they spoke with joined palms and bowed limbs.

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.82.46)

देवा ऊचुः । देवदेव महादेव करुणासागर प्रभो । शीघ्रं जीवय कामं त्वं रक्ष प्राणान् रतेर्हर

devā ūcuḥ devadeva mahādeva karuṇāsāgara prabho śīghraṁ jīvaya kāmaṁ tvaṁ rakṣa prāṇān raterhara

The gods said: "O God of gods, O Mahadeva, ocean of compassion, O Lord! Quickly restore Kama to life, guard his very breath, and take away Rati's sorrow."

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.82.47)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्याकर्ण्यामरवचः प्रसन्नः परमेश्वरः । पुनर्बभाषे करुणासागरः सकलेश्वरः

brahmovāca ityākarṇyāmaravacaḥ prasannaḥ parameśvaraḥ punarbabhāṣe karuṇāsāgaraḥ sakaleśvaraḥ

Brahma said: Hearing the words of the immortals, that ocean of compassion, lord of all, Parameshvara, was pleased and spoke once more.

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.82.48)

शिव उवाच । हे देवाः सुप्रसन्नोऽस्मि जीवयिष्यामि चान्तरे । कामः स मद्गणो भूत्वा विहरिष्यति नित्यशः

śiva uvāca he devāḥ suprasanno'smi jīvayiṣyāmi cāntare kāmaḥ sa madgaṇo bhūtvā vihariṣyati nityaśaḥ

Shiva said: "O gods, I am well pleased; I shall in due time restore him to life, unseen. Kama, having become an attendant of mine, shall roam free forever."

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.82.49)

नाख्येयमिदमाख्यानं कस्यचित्पुरतः सुराः । गच्छत स्वस्थलं दुखं नाशयिष्यामि सर्वतः

nākhyeyamidamākhyānaṁ kasyacitpurataḥ surāḥ gacchata svasthalaṁ dukhaṁ nāśayiṣyāmi sarvataḥ

"This account is not to be told before anyone, O gods. Go now, each to your own place; I shall utterly dispel this sorrow."

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.82.50)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्त्वान्तर्दधे रुद्रो देवानां स्तुवतां तदा । सर्वे देवाः सुप्रसन्ना बभूवुर्गतविस्मयाः

brahmovāca ityuktvāntardadhe rudro devānāṁ stuvatāṁ tadā sarve devāḥ suprasannā babhūvurgatavismayāḥ

Brahma said: Having said this, Rudra vanished from that very place even as the gods were still singing his praise; and all the gods, their astonishment gone, became well content.

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.82.51)

ततस्तां च समाश्वास्य रुद्रस्य वचने स्थिताः । उक्त्वा वचस्तदीयं च स्वं स्वं धाम ययुर्मुने

tatastāṁ ca samāśvāsya rudrasya vacane sthitāḥ uktvā vacastadīyaṁ ca svaṁ svaṁ dhāma yayurmune

Then, having consoled her, and remaining firm in Rudra's word, they told her what he had said and went, O sage, each to his own abode.

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.82.52)

कामपत्नी समादिष्टं नगरं सा गता तदा । प्रतीक्षमाणा तं कालं रुद्रादिष्टं मुनीश्वर

kāmapatnī samādiṣṭaṁ nagaraṁ sā gatā tadā pratīkṣamāṇā taṁ kālaṁ rudrādiṣṭaṁ munīśvara

Then Kama's wife went to that appointed city, and there, O lord of sages, she remained awaiting the time that Rudra had ordained.
