Narada's Instruction to Parvati

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.84.1)

नारद उवाच । विधे तात महाप्राज्ञ विष्णुशिष्य त्रिलोककृत् । अद्भुतेयं कथा प्रोक्ता शङ्करस्य महात्मनः

nārada uvāca vidhe tāta mahāprājña viṣṇuśiṣya trilokakṛt adbhuteyaṁ kathā proktā śaṅkarasya mahātmanaḥ

Narada said: "O Brahma, most wise, teacher of Vishnu, maker of the three worlds! You have told me this wondrous tale of the great-souled Shankara."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.84.2)

भस्मीभूते स्मरे शम्भुतृतीयनयनाग्निना । तस्मिन्प्रविष्टे जलधौ वद त्वं किमभूत्ततः

bhasmībhūte smare śambhutṛtīyanayanāgninā tasminpraviṣṭe jaladhau vada tvaṁ kimabhūttataḥ

"When Smara had been reduced to ashes by the fire of Shambhu's third eye, and that fire had entered the ocean, tell me what happened after that."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.84.3)

किं चकार ततो देवी पार्वती कुधरात्मजा । गता कुत्र सखीभ्यां सा तद्वदाद्य दयानिधे

kiṁ cakāra tato devī pārvatī kudharātmajā gatā kutra sakhībhyāṁ sā tadvadādya dayānidhe

"And what then did the goddess Parvati, daughter of the mountain king, do? Where did she go with her two friends? Tell me this now, O ocean of compassion."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.84.4)

ब्रह्मोवाच । शृणु तात महाप्राज्ञ चरितं शशिमौलिनः । महोतिकारकस्यैव स्वामिनो मम चादरात्

brahmovāca śṛṇu tāta mahāprājña caritaṁ śaśimaulinaḥ mahotikārakasyaiva svāmino mama cādarāt

Brahma said: "Listen, O dear one, most wise, with due reverence, to this deed of Shashimauli, my own most venerable Lord."

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.84.5)

यदादहच्छम्भुनेत्रोद्भवो हि मदनं शुचिः । महाशब्दोऽद्भुतोऽभूद्वै येनाकाशः प्रपूरितः

yadādahacchambhunetrodbhavo hi madanaṁ śuciḥ mahāśabdo'dbhuto'bhūdvai yenākāśaḥ prapūritaḥ

When that pure fire, born of Shambhu's eye, had burned Madana to ashes, a great and wondrous sound arose, filling the whole sky.

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.84.6)

तेन शब्देन महता कामं दग्धं समीक्ष्य च । सखीभ्यां सह भीता सा ययौ स्वगृहमाकुला

tena śabdena mahatā kāmaṁ dagdhaṁ samīkṣya ca sakhībhyāṁ saha bhītā sā yayau svagṛhamākulā

Hearing that great sound and seeing Kama reduced to ashes, she, terrified and distraught, went with her two companions to her own home.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.84.7)

तेन शब्देन हिमवान्परिवारसमन्वितः । विस्मितोऽभूदतिक्लिष्टः सुतां स्मृत्वा गतां ततः

tena śabdena himavānparivārasamanvitaḥ vismito'bhūdatikliṣṭaḥ sutāṁ smṛtvā gatāṁ tataḥ

At that sound Himavan too, together with his family, was struck with astonishment and great distress, remembering that his daughter had gone from him.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.84.8)

जगाम शोकं शैलेशो सुतां दृष्ट्वातिविह्वलाम् । रुदन्तीं शम्भुविरहादाससादाचलेश्वरः

jagāma śokaṁ śaileśo sutāṁ dṛṣṭvātivihvalām rudantīṁ śambhuvirahādāsasādācaleśvaraḥ

The lord of mountains, seeing his daughter utterly distraught, fell into grief; he came to her as she wept in her separation from Shambhu.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.84.9)

आसाद्य पाणिना तस्या मार्जयन्नयनद्वयम् । मा बिभीहि शिवेऽरोदीरित्युक्त्वा तां तदाग्रहीत्

āsādya pāṇinā tasyā mārjayannayanadvayam mā bibhīhi śive'rodīrityuktvā tāṁ tadāgrahīt

Coming to her, wiping her two eyes with his own hand, saying, "Do not fear, O Shiva, weep not," he then took hold of her.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.84.10)

क्रोडे कृत्वा सुतां शीघ्रं हिमवानचलेश्वरः । स्वमालयमथानिन्ये सान्त्वयन्नतिविह्वलाम्

kroḍe kṛtvā sutāṁ śīghraṁ himavānacaleśvaraḥ svamālayamathāninye sāntvayannativihvalām

The lord of mountains quickly took his daughter upon his lap and, consoling her in her great distress, carried her to his own home.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.84.11)

अन्तर्हिते स्मरं दग्ध्वा हरे तद्विरहाच्छिवा । विकलाभूद् भृशं सा वै लेभे शर्म न कुत्रचित्

antarhite smaraṁ dagdhvā hare tadvirahācchivā vikalābhūd bhṛśaṁ sā vai lebhe śarma na kutracit

When Hara, having burned Smara to ashes, had vanished from sight, Shiva (Parvati), in her separation from him, became utterly distraught; nowhere did she find any peace.

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.84.12)

पितुर्गृहं तदा गत्वा मिलित्वा मातरं शिवा । पुनर्जातं तदा मेने स्वात्मानं सा धरात्मजा

piturgṛhaṁ tadā gatvā militvā mātaraṁ śivā punarjātaṁ tadā mene svātmānaṁ sā dharātmajā

Then, having gone to her father's house and met her mother, Shiva, the mountain's daughter, felt as though she had been born all over again.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.84.13)

निनिन्द च स्वरूपं सा हा हतास्मीत्यथाब्रवीत् । सखीभिर्बोधिता चापि न बुबोध गिरीन्द्रजा

nininda ca svarūpaṁ sā hā hatāsmītyathābravīt sakhībhirbodhitā cāpi na bubodha girīndrajā

She reproached her own form, crying, "Alas, I am ruined!" Even when her friends tried to console her, the mountain king's daughter did not regain her senses.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.84.14)

स्वपती च पिबन्ती च सा स्नाती गच्छती शिवा । तिष्ठन्ती च सखीमध्ये न किञ्चित्सुखमाप ह

svapatī ca pibantī ca sā snātī gacchatī śivā tiṣṭhantī ca sakhīmadhye na kiñcitsukhamāpa ha

Whether sleeping, drinking, bathing, walking, or sitting among her friends, Shiva found no happiness anywhere at all.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.84.15)

धिक्स्वरूपं मदीयं च तथा जन्म च कर्म च । इति ब्रुवन्ती सततं स्मरन्ती हरचेष्टितम्

dhiksvarūpaṁ madīyaṁ ca tathā janma ca karma ca iti bruvantī satataṁ smarantī haraceṣṭitam

Again and again she cried, "Shame upon my beauty, upon my birth, upon my very deeds!" -- and continually she remembered Hara's every gesture.

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.84.16)

एवं सा पार्वती शम्भुविरहोत्क्लिष्टमानसा । सुखं न लेभे किञ्चिद्वाब्रवीच्छिवशिवेति च

evaṁ sā pārvatī śambhuvirahotkliṣṭamānasā sukhaṁ na lebhe kiñcidvābravīcchivaśiveti ca

Thus Parvati, her mind afflicted by separation from Shambhu, could find not the slightest happiness, and cried out again and again, "Shiva, Shiva!"

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.84.17)

निवसन्ती पितुर्गेहे पिनाकिगतचेतना । शुशोचाथ शिवा तात मुमोह च मुहुर्मुहुः

nivasantī piturgehe pinākigatacetanā śuśocātha śivā tāta mumoha ca muhurmuhuḥ

O dear one, dwelling in her father's house, her mind fixed upon the wielder of the Pinaka, Shiva grieved without end and again and again fell into a swoon.

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.84.18)

शैलाधिराजोऽप्यथ मेनकापि मैनाकमुख्यास्तनयाश्च सर्वे । तां सान्त्वयामासुरदीनसत्त्वा हरं विसस्मार तथापि नो सा

śailādhirājo'pyatha menakāpi mainākamukhyāstanayāśca sarve tāṁ sāntvayāmāsuradīnasattvā haraṁ visasmāra tathāpi no sā

The king of mountains, and Menaka too, and all her sons headed by Mainaka, their hearts steadfast, tried to console her -- yet still she could not forget Hara.

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.84.19)

अथ देवमुने धीमन्हिमवत्प्रस्तरे तदा । नियोजितो बलभिदागमस्त्वं कामचारतः

atha devamune dhīmanhimavatprastare tadā niyojito balabhidāgamastvaṁ kāmacārataḥ

Then, O wise sage among the gods, you, wandering there of your own free will, arrived at Himavan's mountain terrace.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.84.20)

ततस्त्वं पूजितस्तेन भूधरेण महात्मना । कुशलं पृष्टवांस्तं वै तदाविष्टो वरासने

tatastvaṁ pūjitastena bhūdhareṇa mahātmanā kuśalaṁ pṛṣṭavāṁstaṁ vai tadāviṣṭo varāsane

You were honored there by that great-souled lord of the mountain, and, seated upon an excellent seat, you asked after his welfare.

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.84.21)

ततः प्रोवाच शैलेशः कन्याचरितमादितः । हरसेवान्वितं कामदहनं च हरेण ह

tataḥ provāca śaileśaḥ kanyācaritamāditaḥ harasevānvitaṁ kāmadahanaṁ ca hareṇa ha

Then the lord of the mountains related to you the whole account of his daughter from its very beginning -- her service to Hara, and Hara's burning of Kama.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.84.22)

श्रुत्वावोचो मुने त्वं तु तं शैलेशं शिवं भज । तमामन्त्र्योदतिष्ठस्त्वं संस्मृत्य मनसा शिवम्

śrutvāvoco mune tvaṁ tu taṁ śaileśaṁ śivaṁ bhaja tamāmantryodatiṣṭhastvaṁ saṁsmṛtya manasā śivam

Hearing this, O sage, you said to that lord of the mountains, "Worship Shiva alone"; and having spoken thus, calling Shiva to mind, you rose from that place.

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.84.23)

तं समुत्सृज्य रहसि कालीं तामगमस्त्वरा । लोकोपकारको ज्ञानी त्वं मुने शिववल्लभः

taṁ samutsṛjya rahasi kālīṁ tāmagamastvarā lokopakārako jñānī tvaṁ mune śivavallabhaḥ

Leaving him there in that solitary place, you went swiftly to Kali herself -- for you, O sage, are a benefactor of the world, a man of wisdom, and most dear to Shiva.

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.84.24)

आसाद्य कालीं सम्बोध्य तद्धिते स्थित आदरात् । अवोचस्त्वं वचस्तथ्यं सर्वेषां ज्ञानिनां वरः

āsādya kālīṁ sambodhya taddhite sthita ādarāt avocastvaṁ vacastathyaṁ sarveṣāṁ jñānināṁ varaḥ

Reaching Kali, addressing her, and standing there out of concern for her welfare, you, O best of all the wise, spoke these true words.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.84.25)

नारद उवाच । शृणु कालि वचो मे हि सत्यं वच्मि दयारतः । सर्वथा ते हितकरं निर्विकारं सुकामदम्

nārada uvāca śṛṇu kāli vaco me hi satyaṁ vacmi dayārataḥ sarvathā te hitakaraṁ nirvikāraṁ sukāmadam

Narada said: "Listen to my words, O Kali; moved by compassion, I speak the truth. This is wholly for your good, unchanging, and shall grant your true desire."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.84.26)

सेवितश्च महादेवस्त्वयेह तपसा विना । गर्ववत्या यदध्वंसीद्दीनानुग्रहकारकः

sevitaśca mahādevastvayeha tapasā vinā garvavatyā yadadhvaṁsīddīnānugrahakārakaḥ

"Here you served Mahadeva without true austerity, filled with pride -- and so he, who shows grace to the humble, destroyed that very pride."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.84.27)

विरक्तश्च स ते स्वामी महायोगी महेश्वरः । विसृष्टवान्स्मरं दग्ध्वा त्वां शिवे भक्तवत्सलः

viraktaśca sa te svāmī mahāyogī maheśvaraḥ visṛṣṭavānsmaraṁ dagdhvā tvāṁ śive bhaktavatsalaḥ

"That lord of yours, the great yogin Maheshvara, grew detached and, even as he burned Smara, left you too, O Shiva -- though he is ever tender to his devotees."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.84.28)

तस्मात्त्वं सुतपोयुक्ता चिरमाराधयेश्वरम् । तपसा संस्कृतां रुद्रः स द्वितीयां करिष्यति

tasmāttvaṁ sutapoyuktā ciramārādhayeśvaram tapasā saṁskṛtāṁ rudraḥ sa dvitīyāṁ kariṣyati

"Therefore, devoted to true austerity, worship the Lord for a long time; once purified by tapas, Rudra will make you his second self."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.84.29)

त्वं चापि शङ्करं शम्भुं न त्यक्ष्यसि कदाचन । नान्यं पतिं हठाद्देवि ग्रहीष्यसि शिवादृते

tvaṁ cāpi śaṅkaraṁ śambhuṁ na tyakṣyasi kadācana nānyaṁ patiṁ haṭhāddevi grahīṣyasi śivādṛte

"And you too shall never abandon Shankara Shambhu; nor shall you, O goddess, ever forcibly accept any husband other than Shiva."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.84.30)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्याकर्ण्यवचस्ते हि मुने सा भूधरात्मजा । किञ्चिदुच्छ्वसिता काली प्राह त्वां साञ्जलिर्मुदा

brahmovāca ityākarṇyavacaste hi mune sā bhūdharātmajā kiñciducchvasitā kālī prāha tvāṁ sāñjalirmudā

Brahma said: O sage, hearing these words of yours, that mountain's daughter, Kali, somewhat relieved, spoke to you with joy and joined palms.

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.84.31)

शिवोवाच । त्वं तु सर्वज्ञ जगतामुपकारकर प्रभो । रुद्रस्याराधनार्थाय मन्त्रं देहि मुने हि मे

śivovāca tvaṁ tu sarvajña jagatāmupakārakara prabho rudrasyārādhanārthāya mantraṁ dehi mune hi me

Parvati said: "O all-knowing one, O lord who benefits the whole world, give me, O sage, the mantra for the worship of Rudra."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.84.32)

न सिध्यति क्रिया कापि सर्वेषां सद्गुरुं विना । मया श्रुता पुरा सत्यं श्रुतिरेषा सनातनी

na sidhyati kriyā kāpi sarveṣāṁ sadguruṁ vinā mayā śrutā purā satyaṁ śrutireṣā sanātanī

"No action of anyone ever succeeds without a true guru -- I have heard this eternal word of the scriptures before, and I know it to be true."

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.84.33)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्याः पार्वत्या मुनिसत्तमः । पञ्चाक्षरं शम्भुमन्त्रं विधिपूर्वमुपादिशः

brahmovāca iti śrutvā vacastasyāḥ pārvatyā munisattamaḥ pañcākṣaraṁ śambhumantraṁ vidhipūrvamupādiśaḥ

Brahma said: Hearing these words of Parvati, that best of sages duly imparted to her, according to due rite, Shiva's five-syllabled mantra.

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.84.34)

अवोचश्च वचस्तां त्वं श्रद्धामुत्पादयन्मुने । प्रभावं मन्त्रराजस्य तस्य सर्वाधिकं मुने

avocaśca vacastāṁ tvaṁ śraddhāmutpādayanmune prabhāvaṁ mantrarājasya tasya sarvādhikaṁ mune

And you, O sage, describing the power of that king of mantras, greater than any other, spoke to her these words, awakening faith in her heart.

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.84.35)

नारद उवाच । शृणु देवि मनोरस्य प्रभावं परमाद्भुतम् । यस्य श्रवणमात्रेण शङ्करः सुप्रसीदति

nārada uvāca śṛṇu devi manorasya prabhāvaṁ paramādbhutam yasya śravaṇamātreṇa śaṅkaraḥ suprasīdati

Narada said: "Listen, O goddess, to the utterly wondrous power of this mantra, by the mere hearing of which Shankara becomes truly pleased."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.84.36)

मन्त्रोऽयं सर्वमन्त्राणामधिराजश्च कामदः । भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदोऽत्यन्तं शङ्करस्य महाप्रियः

mantro'yaṁ sarvamantrāṇāmadhirājaśca kāmadaḥ bhuktimuktiprado'tyantaṁ śaṅkarasya mahāpriyaḥ

"This mantra is the very sovereign of all mantras, the granter of desires; it fully bestows both worldly enjoyment and liberation, and is most dear to Shankara."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.84.37)

सुभगे येन जप्तेन विधिना सोऽचिराद् द्रुतम् । आराधितस्ते प्रत्यक्षो भविष्यति शिवो ध्रुवम्

subhage yena japtena vidhinā so'cirād drutam ārādhitaste pratyakṣo bhaviṣyati śivo dhruvam

"O blessed one, by whatever rule this is duly recited, Shiva, thus swiftly worshipped, will surely appear before you in visible form."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.84.38)

चिन्तयन्ती च तद्रूपं नियमस्था शराक्षरम् । जप मन्त्रं शिवे त्वं हि सन्तुष्यति शिवो द्रुतम्

cintayantī ca tadrūpaṁ niyamasthā śarākṣaram japa mantraṁ śive tvaṁ hi santuṣyati śivo drutam

"Meditating upon his very form, established in strict discipline, O Shiva, recite this five-syllabled mantra; Shankara will soon be well pleased."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.84.39)

एवं कुरु तपः साध्वि तपःसाध्यो महेश्वरः । तपस्येव फलं सर्वैः प्राप्यते नान्यथा क्वचित्

evaṁ kuru tapaḥ sādhvi tapaḥsādhyo maheśvaraḥ tapasyeva phalaṁ sarvaiḥ prāpyate nānyathā kvacit

"Perform austerity thus, O virtuous one; Maheshvara is attainable through tapas alone. By tapas alone does everyone obtain the fruit -- never otherwise, under any circumstance."

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.84.40)

ब्रह्मोवाच । एवमुक्त्वा तदा कालीं नारद त्वं शिवप्रियः । यादृच्छिकोऽगमस्त्वं तु स्वर्गं देवहिते रतः

brahmovāca evamuktvā tadā kālīṁ nārada tvaṁ śivapriyaḥ yādṛcchiko'gamastvaṁ tu svargaṁ devahite rataḥ

Brahma said: Having thus spoken to Kali, O Narada, dear to Shiva, you then went off, of your own free will, to heaven, ever devoted to the welfare of the gods.

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.84.41)

पार्वती च तदा श्रुत्वा वचनं तव नारद । सुप्रसन्ना तदा प्राप पञ्चाक्षरमनूत्तमम्

pārvatī ca tadā śrutvā vacanaṁ tava nārada suprasannā tadā prāpa pañcākṣaramanūttamam

And, O Narada, hearing your words, Parvati too became greatly pleased, and thereupon obtained that most excellent five-syllabled mantra.
