Rudra Samhita · Chapter 86
Shiva's Consolation of Parvati
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.86.1)
brahmovāca evaṁ tapatyāṁ pārvatyāṁ śivaprāptau munīśvara cirakālo vyatīyāya prādurbhūto haro na hi
Brahma said: O lord of sages, thus, as Parvati went on performing austerity to attain Shiva, a long time passed, yet Hara did not appear.
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.86.2)
himālayastadāgatya pārvatīṁ kṛtaniścayām sabhāryaḥ sasutāmātya uvāca parameśvarīm
Then Himalaya, together with his wife, his son, and his ministers, went to Parvati, whose resolve had grown unshakable, and spoke to that supreme goddess.
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.86.3)
himālaya uvāca mā khidyatāṁ mahābhāge tapasānena pārvatī rudro na dṛśyate bāle virakto nātra saṁśayaḥ
Himalaya said: "Do not grieve, O most blessed Parvati, through this austerity, my child. Rudra is nowhere to be seen -- he is utterly detached, without any doubt."
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.86.4)
"You are slender and delicate of limb, and by this austerity you will only waste away, without doubt; I speak to you nothing but the truth, the very truth."
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.86.5)
tasmāduttiṣṭha caihi tvaṁ svagṛhaṁ varavarṇini kiṁ tena tava rudreṇa yena dagdhaḥ purā smaraḥ
"Therefore, O fairest one, arise and return with me to your own home. What use is that Rudra to you -- he by whom Smara was once burned to ashes?"
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.86.6)
ato hi nirvikāratvāttvāmādātuṁ varāṁ haraḥ nāgamiṣyati deveśi taṁ kathaṁ prārthayiṣyasi
"Being beyond all change, Hara will never come to take you as his bride, O goddess of gods; how then will you even entreat him?"
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.86.7)
gaganastho yathā candro grahītuṁ na hi śakyate tathaiva durgamaṁ śambhuṁ jānīhi tvamihānaghe
"Just as the moon, set in the sky, can never be seized, so too, O sinless one, know Shambhu here to be beyond any reach."
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.86.8)
brahmovāca tathaiva menayā coktā tathā sahyādriṇā satī meruṇā mandareṇaiva mainākena tathaiva sā
Brahma said: Just as Mena had spoken thus to that virtuous one, so too did Sahyadri, and Meru, and Mandara, and Mainaka speak to her in the very same way.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.86.9)
evamanyaiḥ kṣitidhraiśca krauñcādibhiranāturā tathaiva girijā proktā nānāvādavidhāyibhiḥ
In just the same way did other mountains too, Krauncha and the rest, unshaken though she was, urge upon Girija their manifold arguments.
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.86.10)
evaṁ proktā yadā tanvī sā sarvaiḥ tapasi sthitā uvāca prahasantyeva himavantaṁ śucismitā
Thus addressed by all of them, that slender goddess, established in her austerity, replied to Himavan with a smile, her laughter utterly pure.
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.86.11)
pārvatyuvāca purā proktaṁ mayā tāta mātaḥ kiṁ vismṛtaṁ tvayā adhunāpi pratijñāṁ ca śṛṇudhvaṁ mama bāndhavāḥ
Parvati said: "Father, mother, have you forgotten what I declared before? Hear my vow again even now, O my kinsfolk."
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.86.12)
virakto'sau mahādevo yena dagdho ruṣā smaraḥ taṁ toṣayāmi tapasā śaṅkaraṁ bhaktavatsalam
"That very Mahadeva who, in his wrath, burned Smara to ashes -- that detached Shankara, so tender to his devotees, I shall content through austerity."
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.86.13)
sarve bhavanto gacchantu svaṁ svaṁ dhāma praharṣitāḥ bhaviṣyatyeva tuṣṭo'sau nātra kāryā vicāraṇā
"Go, all of you, rejoicing, each to your own abode; he will surely be won over -- there is no need for any doubt in this matter."
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.86.14)
dagdho hi madano yena yena dagdhaṁ girervanam tamānayiṣye cātraiva tapasā kevalena hi
"He by whom Madana was burned, and by whom even the mountain's forest was scorched -- him I shall bring here, by the power of austerity alone."
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.86.15)
tapobalena mahatā susevyo hi sadāśivaḥ jānīdhvaṁ hi mahābhāgāḥ satyaṁ satyaṁ vadāmi vaḥ
"By the great power of tapas, Sadashiva is won over with ease; know this well, O most blessed ones -- I speak to you nothing but the truth, the very truth."
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.86.16)
ābhāṣya caivaṁ girijā ca menakāṁ mainākabandhuṁ pitaraṁ himālayam tūṣṇīṁ babhūvāśu subhāṣiṇī śivā samandaraṁ parvatarājabālikā
Having thus spoken to Menaka, and to her father Himalaya, kinsman of Mainaka, that eloquent Shiva, daughter of the mountain-king, together with Mandara, at once fell silent.
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.86.17)
jagmustathoktāḥ śivayā hi parvatā yathāgatenāpi vicakṣaṇāste praśaṁsamānā girijāṁ muhurmuhuḥ suvismitā hemanageśvarādyāḥ
Thus addressed by Shiva, the mountains, wise as they were, went back by the very way they had come, Himachal, lord of the golden mountain, and the rest, praising Girija again and again, filled with wonder.
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.86.18)
gateṣu teṣu sūrveṣu sakhībhiḥ parivāritā tapastepe tadadhikaṁ paramārthasuniścayā
When all of them had gone, surrounded by her friends, she, her resolve fixed firmly on the highest truth, performed austerity more intensely still.
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.86.19)
tapasā mahatā tena taptamāsīccarācaram trailokyaṁ hi muniśreṣṭha sadevāsuramānuṣam
O best of sages, by that great austerity the three worlds, moving and unmoving alike, together with gods, demons, and men, all grew scorched.
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.86.20)
tadā surāsurāḥ sarve yakṣakinnaracāraṇāḥ siddhāḥsādhyāśca munayo vidyādharamahoragāḥ
Then all the gods and demons, the yakshas, kinnaras, and charanas, the siddhas and sadhyas, the sages, vidyadharas, and great serpents --
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.86.21)
saprajāpatayaścaiva guhyakāśca tathāpare kaṣṭāt kaṣṭataraṁ prāptāḥ kāraṇaṁ na viduḥ sma tat
together with the Prajapatis, and the guhyakas besides, fell into one distress after another, and none of them knew its cause.
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.86.22)
sarve militvā śakrādyā gurumāmantrya vihvalāḥ sumerau taptasarvāṅgā vidhiṁ māṁ śaraṇaṁ yayuḥ
Then Indra and all the gods, gathering together and consulting with their preceptor, utterly distraught, their every limb scorched, came at Sumeru to seek refuge with me, Brahma.
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.86.23)
tatra gatvā praṇamyāśu vihvalā naṣṭasutviṣaḥ ūcuḥsarve ca saṁstūya hyaikapadyena māṁ hi te
Reaching that place, bowing swiftly, distraught and their radiance dimmed, all of them, with one voice, spoke to me, praising me together.
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.86.24)
devā ūcuḥ tvayā sṛṣṭamidaṁ sarvaṁ jagadetaccarācaram santaptamati kasmādvai na jñātaṁ kāraṇaṁ vibho
The gods said: "All this world, moving and unmoving, was created by you alone; why then is it so grievously scorched? Do you not know the cause, O all-pervading one?"
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.86.25)
tad brūhi kāraṇaṁ brahman jñātumarhasi naḥ prabho dagdhībhūtatanūndevān tvatto nānyo'sti rakṣakaḥ
"Tell us that cause, O Brahma; you alone, O lord, are fit to know it. For us gods, our very bodies now scorched, there is no protector but you."
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.86.26)
brahmovāca ityākarṇya vacasteṣāmahaṁ smṛtvā śivaṁ hṛdā vicārya manasā sarvaṁ girijāyāstapaḥ phalam
Brahma said: Hearing their words, I called Shiva to mind within my heart, and, reflecting upon everything in my mind, I understood it to be the very fruit of Girija's austerity.
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.86.27)
dagdhaṁ viśvamiti jñātvā taiḥ sarvairiha sādarāt haraye tatkathayituṁ kṣīrābdhimagamaṁ drutam
Knowing that the whole universe was thus being scorched, I went at once, together with all of them, with due reverence, to the ocean of milk, to tell Hari of this.
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.86.28)
tatra gatvā hariṁ dṛṣṭvā vilasantaṁ sukhāsane supraṇamya susaṁstūya prāvocaṁ sāñjaliḥ suraiḥ
Arriving there, and beholding Hari, radiant, seated at his ease, I bowed to him well, praised him duly, and, together with the gods, spoke to him with joined palms.
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.86.29)
trāhi trāhi mahāviṣṇo taptānnaḥ śaraṇāgatān tapasogreṇa pārvatyāstapantyāḥ parameṇa hi
"Save us, save us, O great Vishnu! We, who have come to you for refuge, are scorched by the fierce and utmost austerity that Parvati is performing."
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.86.30)
ityākarṇya vacasteṣāmasmadādidivaukasām śeṣāsane samāviṣṭo'smānuvāca rameśvaraḥ
Having heard these words of us, the dwellers of heaven, Rameshvara, seated upon his couch of Shesha, spoke to us.
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.86.31)
viṣṇuruvāca jñātaṁ sarvaṁ nidānaṁ me pārvatītapaso'dya vai yuṣmābhiḥ sahitastvadya vrajāmi parameśvaram
Vishnu said: "I now know the entire cause of Parvati's austerity. This very day, together with all of you, I shall go to Parameshvara."
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.86.32)
mahādevaṁ prārthayāmo girijāprāpaṇāya tam pāṇigrahārthamadhunā lokānāṁ svastaye'marāḥ
"O immortals, we shall entreat Mahadeva to accept Girija, to take her hand in marriage now, for the welfare of all the worlds."
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.86.33)
varaṁ dātuṁ śivāyai hi devadevaḥ pinākadhṛk yathā ceṣyati tatraiva kariṣyāmo'dhunā hi tat
"As for granting Shiva her boon, whatever the God of gods, the wielder of the Pinaka, may there desire, that alone shall we now do."
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.86.34)
tasmād vayaṁ gamiṣyāmo yatra rudro mahāprabhuḥ tapasogreṇa saṁyukto'dyāste paramamaṅgalaḥ
"Therefore let us go to where the great lord Rudra, joined now with fierce austerity, dwells today, most auspicious of all."
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.86.35)
brahmovāca viṣṇostadvacanaṁ śrutvā sarva ūcuḥ surādayaḥ mahābhītā haṭhāt kuddhāddagdhukāmāt layaṅkarāt
Brahma said: Hearing Vishnu's words, all the gods and the rest, greatly afraid of that fierce, wrathful, world-consuming power ready to burn all, spoke thus.
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.86.36)
devā ūcuḥ mahābhayaṅkaraṁ kruddhaṁ kālānalasamaprabham na yāsyāmo vayaṁ sarve virūpākṣaṁ mahāprabhum
The gods said: "To that most fearsome, wrathful one, blazing like the very fire of dissolution, that great lord Virupaksha -- we shall none of us go."
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.86.37)
"Just as he once burned that formidable Madana to ashes, so too, filled with the same wrath, will he surely burn us as well -- of this there is no doubt."
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.86.38)
brahmovāca tadākarṇya vacasteṣāṁ śakrādīnāṁ rameśvaraḥ sāntvayaṁstānsurānsarvānprovāca sa harirmune
Brahma said: O sage, hearing these words of Indra and the rest, Rameshvara, consoling all those gods, spoke to them thus.
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.86.39)
hariruvāca he surā madvacaḥ prītyā śṛṇutādarato'khilāḥ na vo dhakṣyati sa svāmī devānāṁ bhayanāśanaḥ
Hari said: "O gods, listen all of you, with love and with reverence, to my word. That Lord, destroyer of the gods' every fear, will not burn you."
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.86.40)
tasmādbhavadbhirgantavyaṁ mayā sārdhaṁ vicakṣaṇaiḥ śambhuṁ śubhakaraṁ matvā śaraṇaṁ tasya suprabhoḥ
"Therefore, O wise ones, you must all go together with me, considering Shambhu the bringer of all good, and taking refuge in that great and glorious lord."
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.86.41)
śivaṁ purāṇaṁ puruṣaṁ hyadhīśaṁ vareṇyarūpaṁ hi paraṁ purāṇam tapo juṣāṇaṁ paramātmarūpaṁ parātparaṁ taṁ śaraṇaṁ vrajāmaḥ
"Let us take refuge in that Shiva -- the ancient Purusha, the supreme lord, of a form most excellent, most ancient of all, absorbed in austerity, the very form of the Supreme Self, higher than the highest."
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.86.42)
brahmovāca evamuktāstadā devā viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā jagmuḥ sarve tena saha draṣṭukāmāḥ pinākinam
Brahma said: Thus addressed by the mighty Vishnu, all the gods, desiring to behold the wielder of the Pinaka, set out together with him.
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.86.43)
prathamaṁ śailaputryāstattapo draṣṭuṁ tadāśramam jagmurmārgavaśātsarve viṣṇvādyāḥ sakutūhalāḥ
First, drawn by the way, Vishnu and all the other gods went, eager with curiosity, to behold the mountain-daughter's austerity at her very hermitage.
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.86.44)
pārvatyāḥ sutapo dṛṣṭvā tejasā vyāpṛtāstadā praṇemustāṁ jagaddhātrīṁ tejorūpāṁ tapaḥsthitām
Beholding Parvati's excellent austerity, overwhelmed by her very radiance, they bowed to her, the mother of the world, her form itself made of light, established in tapas.
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.86.45)
praśaṁsantastapastasyāḥ sākṣātsiddhitanoḥ surāḥ jagmustatra tadā te ca yatrāste vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ
Praising her austerity, which was itself the very embodiment of accomplishment made visible, the gods then went on from there to where the bull-bannered Shiva dwelt.
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.86.46)
tatra gatvā ca te devāstvāṁ mune praiṣayaṁstadā paśyanto dūratastasthuḥ kāmabhasmakṛto harāt
Arriving there, the gods, O sage, sent you ahead, while they themselves remained at a distance, watching from afar, still fearful of Hara, who had reduced Kama to ashes.
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.86.47)
nārada tvaṁ śivasthānaṁ tadā gatvābhayaḥ sadā śivabhakto viśeṣeṇa prasannaṁ dṛṣṭavān prabhum
You, Narada, ever fearless and especially devoted to Shiva, went then to Shiva's own place, and there beheld the Lord, gracious and well pleased.
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.86.48)
punarāgatya yatnena devānāhūya tāṁstataḥ nināya śaṅkarasthānaṁ tadā viṣṇvādikānmune
Then, returning with due effort, and calling the gods to you, O sage, you led Vishnu and the others to Shankara's own place.
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.86.49)
atha viṣṇvādayaḥ sarve tatra gatvā śivaṁ prabhum dadṛśuḥ sukhamāsīnaṁ prasannaṁ bhaktavatsalam
Then Vishnu and all the gods, arriving there, beheld the Lord Shiva, seated at his ease, gracious, and ever tender to his devotees.
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.86.50)
yogapaṭṭasthitaṁ śambhuṁ gaṇaiśca parivāritam taporūpaṁ dadhānaṁ ca parameśvararūpiṇam
They beheld Shambhu, seated in the band of his yoga-posture, surrounded by his own attendants, bearing the very form of austerity, the embodiment of the Supreme Lord himself.
Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.86.51)
tato viṣṇurmayānye ca surasiddhamunīśvarāḥ praṇamya tuṣṭuvuḥ sūktairvedopaniṣadanvitaiḥ
Then Vishnu, and I, and the other gods, siddhas, and lords of sages, having bowed to him, began to praise him with hymns drawn from the Vedas and the Upanishads.
