The Consolation of the Mountain
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.96.1)
ऋषय ऊचुः । जगत्पिता शिवः प्रोक्तो जगन्माता शिवा मता । तस्माद्देया त्वया कन्या शङ्कराय महात्मने
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ jagatpitā śivaḥ prokto jaganmātā śivā matā tasmāddeyā tvayā kanyā śaṅkarāya mahātmane
The sages said: "Shiva is proclaimed the father of the world, and Shiva (the Goddess) is held to be its mother; therefore you must give your daughter to the great-souled Shankara."
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.96.2)
एवं कृत्वा हिमगिरे सार्थकं ते भवेज्जनुः । जगद्गुरोर्गुरुस्त्वं हि भविष्यसि न संशयः
evaṁ kṛtvā himagire sārthakaṁ te bhavejjanuḥ jagadgurorgurustvaṁ hi bhaviṣyasi na saṁśayaḥ
"By doing this, O Himagiri, your birth will become fruitful; you will become the guru of the very guru of the world -- of this there is no doubt."
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.96.3)
ब्रह्मोवाच । एवं वचनमाकर्ण्य सप्तर्षीणां मुनीश्वर । प्रणम्य तान्करौ बद्ध्वा गिरिराजोऽब्रवीदिदम्
brahmovāca evaṁ vacanamākarṇya saptarṣīṇāṁ munīśvara praṇamya tānkarau baddhvā girirājo'bravīdidam
Brahma said: "Hearing these words of the seven sages, O lord of sages, the King of Mountains bowed to them, joined his hands together, and spoke as follows."
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.96.4)
हिमालय उवाच । सप्तर्षयो महाभागा भवद्भिर्यदुदीरितम् । तत्प्रमाणीकृतं मे हि पुरैव गिरिशेच्छया
himālaya uvāca saptarṣayo mahābhāgā bhavadbhiryadudīritam tatpramāṇīkṛtaṁ me hi puraiva giriśecchayā
Himalaya said: "O greatly blessed seven sages, what you have spoken I have already accepted as authoritative, long before this, by the very will of Girisha."
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.96.5)
इदानीमेक आगत्य विप्रो वैष्णवधर्मवान् । शिवमुद्दिश्य सुप्रीत्या विपरीतं वचोऽब्रवीत्
idānīmeka āgatya vipro vaiṣṇavadharmavān śivamuddiśya suprītyā viparītaṁ vaco'bravīt
"But just now a certain brahmin, devoted to the Vaishnava dharma, came here and, speaking of Shiva with seeming affection, uttered words quite contrary to this."
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.96.6)
तदारभ्य शिवामाता ज्ञानभ्रष्टा बभूव ह । सुताविवाहं रुद्रेण योगिना तेन नेच्छति
tadārabhya śivāmātā jñānabhraṣṭā babhūva ha sutāvivāhaṁ rudreṇa yoginā tena necchati
"From that day, the mother of Shiva has fallen from right understanding; she no longer wishes her daughter's marriage to that ascetic Rudra."
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.96.7)
कोपागारमगात्सा हि सुतप्ता मलिनाम्बरा । कृत्वा महाहठं विप्रा बोध्यमानापि नाबुधत्
kopāgāramagātsā hi sutaptā malināmbarā kṛtvā mahāhaṭhaṁ viprā bodhyamānāpi nābudhat
"Consumed with grief, wearing soiled garments, she has withdrawn to the chamber of anger; O brahmins, in her great obstinacy she does not understand, however much she is reasoned with."
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.96.8)
अहं च ज्ञानविभ्रष्टो जातोऽहं सत्यमीर्यते । दातुं सुतां महेशाय नेच्छामि भिक्षुरूपिणे
ahaṁ ca jñānavibhraṣṭo jāto'haṁ satyamīryate dātuṁ sutāṁ maheśāya necchāmi bhikṣurūpiṇe
"And I too have lost my right understanding -- this I confess in truth: I have no wish to give my daughter to Mahesha in his form of a mendicant beggar."
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.96.9)
ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्त्वा शैलराजस्तु शिवमायाविमोहितः । तूष्णीं बभूव तत्रस्थो मुनीनां मध्यतो मुने
brahmovāca ityuktvā śailarājastu śivamāyāvimohitaḥ tūṣṇīṁ babhūva tatrastho munīnāṁ madhyato mune
Brahma said: "Having spoken so, O sage, the King of Mountains, bewildered by Shiva's maya, fell silent, standing there among the sages."
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.96.10)
सर्वे सप्तर्षयस्ते हि शिवमायां प्रशस्य वै । प्रेषयामासुरथ तां मेनकां प्रत्यरुन्धतीम्
sarve saptarṣayaste hi śivamāyāṁ praśasya vai preṣayāmāsuratha tāṁ menakāṁ pratyarundhatīm
"All those seven sages, extolling Shiva's maya, then sent Arundhati to Menaka."
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.96.11)
अथ पत्युः समादाय निदेशं ज्ञानदा हि सा । जगामारुन्धती तूर्णं यत्र मेना च पार्वती
atha patyuḥ samādāya nideśaṁ jñānadā hi sā jagāmārundhatī tūrṇaṁ yatra menā ca pārvatī
"Then, taking her husband's command, Arundhati, bestower of wisdom, went swiftly to where Mena and Parvati were."
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.96.12)
गत्वा ददर्श मेनां तां शयानां शोकमूर्च्छिताम् । उवाच मधुरं साध्वी सावधाना हितं वचः
gatvā dadarśa menāṁ tāṁ śayānāṁ śokamūrcchitām uvāca madhuraṁ sādhvī sāvadhānā hitaṁ vacaḥ
"Arriving there, she saw Mena lying down, half-swooning with grief; that virtuous lady, with careful attention, spoke sweet and wholesome words."
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.96.13)
अरुन्धत्युवाच । उत्तिष्ठ मेनके साध्वि त्वद्गृहेऽहमरुन्धती । आगता मुनयश्चापि सप्तायाताः कृपालवः
arundhatyuvāca uttiṣṭha menake sādhvi tvadgṛhe'hamarundhatī āgatā munayaścāpi saptāyātāḥ kṛpālavaḥ
Arundhati said: "Rise, O virtuous Menaka! I, Arundhati, have come to your house, and those seven compassionate sages have come as well."
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.96.14)
ब्रह्मोवाच । अरुन्धतीस्वरं श्रुत्वा शीघ्रमुत्थाय मेनका । उवाच शिरसा नत्वा तां पद्मामिव तेजसा
brahmovāca arundhatīsvaraṁ śrutvā śīghramutthāya menakā uvāca śirasā natvā tāṁ padmāmiva tejasā
Brahma said: "Hearing Arundhati's voice, Menaka rose at once, and bowing her head to her who shone in splendor like a lotus, she spoke."
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.96.15)
मेनोवाच । अहोऽद्य किमिदं पुण्यमस्माकं पुण्यजन्मनाम् । वधूर्जगद्विधेः पत्नी वसिष्ठस्यागतेह वै
menovāca aho'dya kimidaṁ puṇyamasmākaṁ puṇyajanmanām vadhūrjagadvidheḥ patnī vasiṣṭhasyāgateha vai
Mena said: "Ah, what merit is this of ours today, we who were already born to merit, that the wife of Vasishtha -- as it were, the daughter-in-law of the Creator of the world -- has come here!"
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.96.16)
किमर्थमागता देवि तन्मे ब्रूहि विशेषतः । अहं दासीसमा ते हि ससुता करुणां कुरु
kimarthamāgatā devi tanme brūhi viśeṣataḥ ahaṁ dāsīsamā te hi sasutā karuṇāṁ kuru
"For what reason have you come, O goddess-like one? Tell me this in full. I, together with my daughter, am as your maidservant; show us your mercy."
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.96.17)
ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्त्वा मेनका साध्वी बोधयित्वा च तां बहु । तत्रागता च सुप्रीत्या यत्र सप्तर्षयोऽपि ते
brahmovāca ityuktvā menakā sādhvī bodhayitvā ca tāṁ bahu tatrāgatā ca suprītyā yatra saptarṣayo'pi te
Brahma said: "Having spoken thus, and after being greatly counseled by her, the virtuous Menaka came with much affection to where those seven sages also were."
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.96.18)
अथ शैलेश्वरं ते च बोधयामासुरादरात् । स्मृत्वा शिवपदद्वन्द्वं सर्वे वाक्यविशारदाः
atha śaileśvaraṁ te ca bodhayāmāsurādarāt smṛtvā śivapadadvandvaṁ sarve vākyaviśāradāḥ
"Then those sages, all skilled in speech, calling to mind the pair of Shiva's feet, respectfully set about instructing the lord of the mountain."
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.96.19)
ऋषय ऊचुः । शैलेन्द्र श्रूयतां वाक्यमस्माकं शुभकारणम् । शिवाय पार्वतीं देहि संहर्तुः श्वशुरो भव
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ śailendra śrūyatāṁ vākyamasmākaṁ śubhakāraṇam śivāya pārvatīṁ dehi saṁhartuḥ śvaśuro bhava
The sages said: "O lord of the mountains, hear our words, spoken for your welfare: give Parvati to Shiva, and become the father-in-law of the Destroyer."
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.96.20)
अयाचितारं सर्वेशं प्रार्थयामास यत्नतः । तारकस्य विनाशाय ब्रह्मा सम्बन्धकर्मणि
ayācitāraṁ sarveśaṁ prārthayāmāsa yatnataḥ tārakasya vināśāya brahmā sambandhakarmaṇi
"Brahma, striving diligently, entreated the Lord of all -- who himself asks for nothing from anyone -- in this matter of the alliance, for the sake of destroying Taraka."
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.96.21)
नोत्सुको दारसंयोगे शङ्करो योगिनां वरः । विधेः प्रार्थनया देवस्तव कन्यां ग्रहीष्यति
notsuko dārasaṁyoge śaṅkaro yogināṁ varaḥ vidheḥ prārthanayā devastava kanyāṁ grahīṣyati
"Shankara, best among yogis, feels no eagerness for the bond of marriage; yet at Brahma's entreaty, the god will accept your daughter."
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.96.22)
दुहितुस्ते तपस्तप्तं प्रतिज्ञानं चकार सा । हेतुद्वयेन योगीन्द्रो विवाहं च करिष्यति
duhituste tapastaptaṁ pratijñānaṁ cakāra sā hetudvayena yogīndro vivāhaṁ ca kariṣyati
"Your daughter has performed her austerity, and he for his part has made his promise; for these two reasons the lord of yogis will indeed enter into the marriage."
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.96.23)
ब्रह्मोवाच । ऋषीणां वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रहस्य स हिमालयः । उवाच किञ्चिद्भीतस्तु परं विनयपूर्वकम्
brahmovāca ṛṣīṇāṁ vacanaṁ śrutvā prahasya sa himālayaḥ uvāca kiñcidbhītastu paraṁ vinayapūrvakam
Brahma said: "Hearing the sages' words, Himalaya, smiling, spoke -- somewhat afraid, yet with the greatest humility."
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.96.24)
हिमालय उवाच । शिवस्य राजसामग्रीं न हि पश्यामि काञ्चन । कञ्चिदाश्रयमैश्वर्यं कं वा स्वजनबान्धवम्
himālaya uvāca śivasya rājasāmagrīṁ na hi paśyāmi kāñcana kañcidāśrayamaiśvaryaṁ kaṁ vā svajanabāndhavam
Himalaya said: "I see in Shiva no royal appurtenance whatsoever -- no shelter, no wealth, nor any kinsfolk or relations."
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.96.25)
नेच्छाम्यति विनिर्लिप्तयोगिने स्वां सुतामहम् । यूयं वेदविधातुश्च पुत्रा वदत निश्चितम्
necchāmyati vinirliptayogine svāṁ sutāmaham yūyaṁ vedavidhātuśca putrā vadata niścitam
"I have no wish to give my own daughter to one so wholly detached, a mere ascetic. You are the sons of the ordainer of the Vedas -- speak to me with certainty."
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.96.26)
वरायाननुरूपाय पिता कन्यां ददाति चेत् । कामान्मोहाद्भयाल्लोभात्स नष्टो नरकं व्रजेत्
varāyānanurūpāya pitā kanyāṁ dadāti cet kāmānmohādbhayāllobhātsa naṣṭo narakaṁ vrajet
"If a father gives his daughter to an unsuitable groom -- whether from desire, delusion, fear, or greed -- he is ruined and goes to hell."
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.96.27)
न हि दास्याम्यहं कन्यामिच्छया शूलपाणये । यद्विधानं भवेद्योग्यमृषयस्तद्विधीयताम्
na hi dāsyāmyahaṁ kanyāmicchayā śūlapāṇaye yadvidhānaṁ bhavedyogyamṛṣayastadvidhīyatām
"I will not, of my own will, give my daughter to the trident-bearer. Whatever fitting arrangement there may be, let the sages themselves decide it."
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.96.28)
ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य हिमागस्य मुनीश्वर । प्रत्युवाच वसिष्ठस्तं तेषां वाक्यविशारदः
brahmovāca ityākarṇya vacastasya himāgasya munīśvara pratyuvāca vasiṣṭhastaṁ teṣāṁ vākyaviśāradaḥ
Brahma said: "Hearing these words of the mountain, O lord of sages, Vasishtha, most skilled in speech among them all, replied to him."
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.96.29)
वसिष्ठ उवाच । शृणु शैलेश मद्वाक्यं सर्वथा ते हितावहम् । धर्माविरुद्धं सत्यं च परत्रेह मुदावहम्
vasiṣṭha uvāca śṛṇu śaileśa madvākyaṁ sarvathā te hitāvaham dharmāviruddhaṁ satyaṁ ca paratreha mudāvaham
Vasishtha said: "Hear my words, O lord of the mountains -- words wholly for your good, not contrary to dharma, true, and bringing joy both in this world and the next."
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.96.30)
वचनं त्रिविधं शैल लौकिके वैदिकेऽपि च । सर्वं जानाति शास्त्रज्ञो निर्मलज्ञानचक्षुषा
vacanaṁ trividhaṁ śaila laukike vaidike'pi ca sarvaṁ jānāti śāstrajño nirmalajñānacakṣuṣā
"Speech, O mountain, is threefold, both in worldly matters and in the Vedic; one versed in the scriptures knows all this through the eye of untainted knowledge."
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.96.31)
असत्यमहितं पश्चात्साम्प्रतं श्रुतिसुन्दरम् । सुबुद्धिर्वक्ति शत्रुर्हि हितं नैव कदाचन
asatyamahitaṁ paścātsāmprataṁ śrutisundaram subuddhirvakti śatrurhi hitaṁ naiva kadācana
"That which is false and harmful, yet momentarily sweet to the ear -- such words a clever tongue speaks; for an enemy never truly speaks what is good for you."
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.96.32)
आदावप्रीतिजनकं परिणामे सुखावहम् । दयालुर्धर्मशीलो हि बोधयत्येव बान्धवः
ādāvaprītijanakaṁ pariṇāme sukhāvaham dayālurdharmaśīlo hi bodhayatyeva bāndhavaḥ
"That which is displeasing at the outset but brings happiness in the end -- only a compassionate, righteous kinsman instructs you with such words."
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.96.33)
श्रुतिमात्रात्सुधातुल्यं सर्वकालसुखावहम् । सत्यसारं हितकरं वचनं श्रेष्ठमीप्सितम्
śrutimātrātsudhātulyaṁ sarvakālasukhāvaham satyasāraṁ hitakaraṁ vacanaṁ śreṣṭhamīpsitam
"That which, the very moment it is heard, is like nectar, and brings happiness at every time -- true in its essence and beneficial -- such speech alone is the best and the most desirable."
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.96.34)
एवं च त्रिविधं शैल नीतिशास्त्रोदितं वचः । कथ्यतां त्रिषु मध्ये किं ब्रुवे वाक्यं त्वदीप्सितम्
evaṁ ca trividhaṁ śaila nītiśāstroditaṁ vacaḥ kathyatāṁ triṣu madhye kiṁ bruve vākyaṁ tvadīpsitam
"Thus, O mountain, speech is said to be of three kinds, as declared in the treatises of right conduct. Tell me -- among these three, which kind of word shall I speak, the one you desire?"
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.96.35)
ब्राह्मसम्पद्विहीनश्च शङ्करस्त्रिदशेश्वरः । तत्त्वज्ञानसमुद्रेषु सन्निमग्नैकमानसः
brāhmasampadvihīnaśca śaṅkarastridaśeśvaraḥ tattvajñānasamudreṣu sannimagnaikamānasaḥ
"Shankara, lord of the thirty gods, is devoid of worldly wealth; his mind alone remains ever immersed in the oceans of the knowledge of Truth."
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.96.36)
ज्ञानानन्दस्येश्वरस्य ब्राह्मवस्तुषु का स्पृहा । गृही ददाति स्वसुतां राज्यसम्पत्तिशालिने
jñānānandasyeśvarasya brāhmavastuṣu kā spṛhā gṛhī dadāti svasutāṁ rājyasampattiśāline
"What desire could the Lord, whose very nature is knowledge and bliss, have for worldly possessions? A householder gives his own daughter to one endowed with a kingdom and wealth --"
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.96.37)
कन्यकां दुःखिने दत्त्वा कन्याघाती भवेत्पिता । को वेद शङ्करो दुःखी कुबेरो यस्य किङ्करः
kanyakāṁ duḥkhine dattvā kanyāghātī bhavetpitā ko veda śaṅkaro duḥkhī kubero yasya kiṅkaraḥ
"-- for to give one's daughter to a man in want makes the father guilty of slaying his own daughter. But who indeed can call Shankara poor, whose very servant is Kubera?"
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.96.38)
भ्रूभङ्गलीलया सृष्टिं स्रष्टुं हर्तुं क्षमो हि सः । निर्गुणः परमात्मा च परेशः प्रकृतेः परः
bhrūbhaṅgalīlayā sṛṣṭiṁ sraṣṭuṁ hartuṁ kṣamo hi saḥ nirguṇaḥ paramātmā ca pareśaḥ prakṛteḥ paraḥ
"He is capable, by the mere sport of a frown, of both creating and destroying the universe; he is the qualityless Supreme Self, the Supreme Lord beyond Prakriti."
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.96.39)
यस्य च त्रिविधा मूर्तिर्विधातुः सृष्टिकर्मणि । सृष्टिस्थित्यन्तजननी ब्रह्मविष्णुहराभिधा
yasya ca trividhā mūrtirvidhātuḥ sṛṣṭikarmaṇi sṛṣṭisthityantajananī brahmaviṣṇuharābhidhā
"He it is who assumes the threefold form of the Creator in the work of creation -- the origin of creation, preservation, and dissolution, known by the names Brahma, Vishnu, and Hara."
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.96.40)
ब्रह्मा च ब्रह्मलोकस्थो विष्णुः क्षीरोदवासकृत् । हरः कैलासनिलयः सर्वाः शिवविभूतयः
brahmā ca brahmalokastho viṣṇuḥ kṣīrodavāsakṛt haraḥ kailāsanilayaḥ sarvāḥ śivavibhūtayaḥ
"Brahma dwells in Brahmaloka, Vishnu makes his abode in the Ocean of Milk, and Hara resides on Kailasa -- all of these are Shiva's own glories."
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.96.41)
धत्ते च त्रिविधा मूर्तीः प्रकृतिः शिवसम्भवा । अंशेन लीलया सृष्टौ कलया बहुधा अपि
dhatte ca trividhā mūrtīḥ prakṛtiḥ śivasambhavā aṁśena līlayā sṛṣṭau kalayā bahudhā api
"And Prakriti, sprung from Shiva, likewise assumes three forms; in the work of creation, through his portion and his play, she too becomes manifold through her fractional powers."
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.96.42)
मुखोद्भवा स्वयं वाणी वागधिष्ठातृदेवता । वक्षःस्थलोद्भवा लक्ष्मीः सर्वसम्पत्स्वरूपिणी
mukhodbhavā svayaṁ vāṇī vāgadhiṣṭhātṛdevatā vakṣaḥsthalodbhavā lakṣmīḥ sarvasampatsvarūpiṇī
"From his mouth arose Vani (Sarasvati) herself, the presiding deity of speech; from his chest arose Lakshmi, who is the very embodiment of all prosperity."
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.96.43)
शिवा तेजस्सु देवानामाविर्भावं चकार सा । निहत्य दानवान्सर्वान्देवेभ्यश्च श्रियं ददौ
śivā tejassu devānāmāvirbhāvaṁ cakāra sā nihatya dānavānsarvāndevebhyaśca śriyaṁ dadau
"Shiva, the Goddess, manifested herself amid the combined radiance of the gods; having slain all the demons, she bestowed prosperity upon the gods."
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.96.44)
प्राप कल्पान्तरे जन्म जठरे दक्षयोषितः । नाम्ना सती हरं प्राप दक्षस्तस्मै ददौ च ताम्
prāpa kalpāntare janma jaṭhare dakṣayoṣitaḥ nāmnā satī haraṁ prāpa dakṣastasmai dadau ca tām
"In another kalpa she took birth in the womb of Daksha's wife; under the name Sati she attained Hara, and Daksha gave her in marriage to him."
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.96.45)
देहं तत्याज योगेन श्रुत्वा सा भर्तृनिन्दनम् । साद्य त्वत्तस्तु मेनायां जज्ञे जठरतश्शिवा
dehaṁ tatyāja yogena śrutvā sā bhartṛnindanam sādya tvattastu menāyāṁ jajñe jaṭharataśśivā
"Hearing her husband reviled, she abandoned her body by the power of yoga; and that same Shiva has now, through you, been born from Mena's womb."
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.96.46)
शिवा शिवस्य पत्नीयं शैल जन्मनि जन्मनि । कल्पे कल्पे बुद्धिरूपा ज्ञानिनां जननी परा
śivā śivasya patnīyaṁ śaila janmani janmani kalpe kalpe buddhirūpā jñānināṁ jananī parā
"O mountain, this Shiva is Shiva's own consort, birth after birth; kalpa after kalpa she takes the form of intellect, the supreme mother of the wise."
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.96.47)
जायते स्म सदा सिद्धा सिद्धिदा सिद्धिरूपिणी । सत्या अस्थि चिताभस्म भक्त्या धत्ते हरः स्वयम्
jāyate sma sadā siddhā siddhidā siddhirūpiṇī satyā asthi citābhasma bhaktyā dhatte haraḥ svayam
"She is ever born already accomplished, bestowing accomplishment, her very form being accomplishment itself. Her true relic-bones and the ash of her funeral pyre, Hara himself bears out of devotion."
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.96.48)
अतस्त्वं स्वेच्छया कन्यां देहि भद्रां हराय च । अथवा सा स्वयं कान्तस्थाने यास्यत्यदास्यसि
atastvaṁ svecchayā kanyāṁ dehi bhadrāṁ harāya ca athavā sā svayaṁ kāntasthāne yāsyatyadāsyasi
"Therefore, of your own accord, give this blessed daughter to Hara; or else, should you not give her, she will go of her own will to her beloved's abode regardless."
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.96.49)
कृत्वा प्रतिज्ञां देवेशो दृष्ट्वा क्लेशमसङ्ख्यकम् । दुहितुस्ते तपःस्थानमाजगाम द्विजात्मकः
kṛtvā pratijñāṁ deveśo dṛṣṭvā kleśamasaṅkhyakam duhituste tapaḥsthānamājagāma dvijātmakaḥ
"Having given his promise, the Lord of gods, beholding the countless hardships of your daughter, came in the form of a brahmin to the place of her penance."
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.96.50)
तामाश्वास्य वरं दत्त्वा जगाम निजमन्दिरम् । तत्प्रार्थनावशाच्छम्भुर्ययाचे त्वां शिवां गिरे
tāmāśvāsya varaṁ dattvā jagāma nijamandiram tatprārthanāvaśācchambhuryayāce tvāṁ śivāṁ gire
"Having reassured her and granted the boon, he returned to his own abode; and it is because of that very entreaty that Shambhu, O mountain, now asks you for Shiva."
Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.96.51)
अङ्गीकृतं युवाभ्यां तच्छिवभक्तिरतात्मना । विपरीतमतिर्जाता वद कस्माद्गिरीश्वर
aṅgīkṛtaṁ yuvābhyāṁ tacchivabhaktiratātmanā viparītamatirjātā vada kasmādgirīśvara
"Both of you, your minds devoted to love for Shiva, had already accepted this; tell me, O lord of the mountains, for what reason has your understanding now turned contrary?"
Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.96.52)
तद्गत्वा प्रभुणा देवप्रार्थितेन त्वदन्तिकम् । प्रस्थापिता वयं शीघ्रं ऋषयः साप्यरुन्धती
tadgatvā prabhuṇā devaprārthitena tvadantikam prasthāpitā vayaṁ śīghraṁ ṛṣayaḥ sāpyarundhatī
"Then the Lord, entreated by the gods, swiftly sent us, the sages, and Arundhati as well, here to your presence."
Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.96.53)
शिक्षयामो वयं त्वा हि देहि रुद्राय पार्वतीम् । एवङ्कृते महानन्दो भविष्यति गिरे तव
śikṣayāmo vayaṁ tvā hi dehi rudrāya pārvatīm evaṅkṛte mahānando bhaviṣyati gire tava
"We instruct you thus: give Parvati to Rudra. By doing so, O mountain, great joy shall come to you."
Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.96.54)
शिवां शिवाय शैलेन्द्र स्वेच्छया चेन्न दास्यसि । भविता तद्विवाहोऽत्र भवितव्यबलेन हि
śivāṁ śivāya śailendra svecchayā cenna dāsyasi bhavitā tadvivāho'tra bhavitavyabalena hi
"O lord of the mountains, even if you do not willingly give Shiva to Shiva, this marriage will still come about, by the force of what must be."
Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.96.55)
वरं ददौ शिवायै स तपन्त्यै तात शङ्करः । न हीश्वरप्रतिज्ञातं विपरीताय कल्पते
varaṁ dadau śivāyai sa tapantyai tāta śaṅkaraḥ na hīśvarapratijñātaṁ viparītāya kalpate
"O father, Shankara himself granted a boon to Shiva while she was performing her austerities; what the Lord has vowed can never come to nothing."
Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.96.56)
अहो प्रतिज्ञा दुर्लङ्घ्या साधूनामीशवर्तिनाम् । सर्वेषां जगतां मध्ये किमीशस्य पुनर्गिरे
aho pratijñā durlaṅghyā sādhūnāmīśavartinām sarveṣāṁ jagatāṁ madhye kimīśasya punargire
"Ah, even the vow of the virtuous who walk in the Lord's own way is inviolable; how much more, then, O mountain, is the vow of the Lord himself, amid all the worlds!"
Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.96.57)
एको महेन्द्रः शैलानां पक्षांश्चिच्छेद लीलया । पार्वती लीलया मेरोः शृङ्गभङ्गं चकार च
eko mahendraḥ śailānāṁ pakṣāṁściccheda līlayā pārvatī līlayā meroḥ śṛṅgabhaṅgaṁ cakāra ca
"Mahendra alone, in mere sport, once clipped the wings of the mountains; and Parvati too, in her play, once shattered the peak of Meru."
Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.96.58)
एकार्थे नहि शैलेश नश्याः सर्वा हि सम्पदः । एकं त्यजेत्कुलस्यार्थे श्रुतिरेषा सनातनी
ekārthe nahi śaileśa naśyāḥ sarvā hi sampadaḥ ekaṁ tyajetkulasyārthe śrutireṣā sanātanī
"O lord of the mountain, for the sake of a single matter, all one's wealth need not be lost; one member may be given up for the sake of the whole family -- this is the eternal teaching of the Veda."
Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.96.59)
दत्त्वा विप्राय स्वसुतामनरण्यो नृपेश्वरः । ब्राह्मणाद्भयमापन्नो ररक्ष निजसम्पदम्
dattvā viprāya svasutāmanaraṇyo nṛpeśvaraḥ brāhmaṇādbhayamāpanno rarakṣa nijasampadam
"King Anaranya, falling into fear of a certain brahmin, gave his own daughter to that brahmin, and so protected his own wealth and kingdom."
Verse 60 (shiva.rudra.96.60)
तमाशु बोधयामासुर्नीतिशास्त्रविदो जनाः । ब्रह्मशापाद्विभीतञ्च गुरवो ज्ञातिसत्तमाः
tamāśu bodhayāmāsurnītiśāstravido janāḥ brahmaśāpādvibhītañca guravo jñātisattamāḥ
"Men versed in the science of statecraft, his elders and the best of his kinsmen, fearing the curse of a brahmin, quickly gave him this counsel."
Verse 61 (shiva.rudra.96.61)
शैलराज त्वमप्येवं सुतां दत्त्वा शिवाय च । रक्ष सर्वान्बन्धुवर्गान्वशं कुरु सुरानपि
śailarāja tvamapyevaṁ sutāṁ dattvā śivāya ca rakṣa sarvānbandhuvargānvaśaṁ kuru surānapi
"O king of the mountains, in just the same way, by giving your daughter to Shiva, protect all your kinsfolk, and bring even the gods under your sway."
Verse 62 (shiva.rudra.96.62)
ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य वसिष्ठस्य वचनं स प्रहस्य च । पप्रच्छ नृपवार्ताञ्च हृदयेन विदूयता
brahmovāca ityākarṇya vasiṣṭhasya vacanaṁ sa prahasya ca papraccha nṛpavārtāñca hṛdayena vidūyatā
Brahma said: "Hearing Vasishtha's words, and smiling, he then asked about the story of that king, though his heart still remained troubled within."
Verse 63 (shiva.rudra.96.63)
हिमालय उवाच । कस्य वंशोद्भवो ब्रह्मन् अनरण्यो नृपश्च सः । सुतां दत्त्वा स च कथं ररक्षाखिलसम्पदः
himālaya uvāca kasya vaṁśodbhavo brahman anaraṇyo nṛpaśca saḥ sutāṁ dattvā sa ca kathaṁ rarakṣākhilasampadaḥ
Himalaya said: "O Brahmin, of what lineage was this King Anaranya born? And how, having given away his daughter, did he protect the whole of his wealth?"
Verse 64 (shiva.rudra.96.64)
ब्रह्मोवाच । इति श्रुत्वा वसिष्ठस्तु शैलवाक्यं प्रसन्नधीः । प्रोवाच गिरये तस्मै नृपवार्त्तां सुखावहाम्
brahmovāca iti śrutvā vasiṣṭhastu śailavākyaṁ prasannadhīḥ provāca giraye tasmai nṛpavārttāṁ sukhāvahām
Brahma said: "Hearing this word of the mountain, Vasishtha, his mind gladdened, related to that mountain the pleasant story of the king."
