Shiva's Five Brahma-Incarnations
Verse 1 (shiva.shatarudra.1.1)
वन्दे महानन्दमनन्तलीलम्महेश्वरं सर्वविभुं महान्तम् । गौरीप्रियं कार्तिकविघ्नराजसमुद्भवं शङ्करमादिदेवम्
vande mahānandamanantalīlammaheśvaraṁ sarvavibhuṁ mahāntam gaurīpriyaṁ kārtikavighnarājasamudbhavaṁ śaṅkaramādidevam
I bow to Maheshvara, the great one of boundless bliss and infinite divine play, the all-pervading Lord; the beloved of Gauri, from whom Kartikeya and Vighnaraja (Ganesha) arose — Shankara, the primeval God.
Verse 2 (shiva.shatarudra.1.2)
शौनक उवाच । व्यासशिष्य महाभाग सूत ज्ञानदयानिधे । वद शम्भ्ववतारांश्च यैरकार्षीत्सतां शिवम्
śaunaka uvāca vyāsaśiṣya mahābhāga sūta jñānadayānidhe vada śambhvavatārāṁśca yairakārṣītsatāṁ śivam
Shaunaka said: O highly fortunate Suta, disciple of Vyasa, ocean of knowledge and compassion, tell us of the incarnations of Shambhu by which he brought welfare to the virtuous.
Verse 3 (shiva.shatarudra.1.3)
सूत उवाच । मुने शौनक सद्भक्त्या दत्तचित्तो जितेन्द्रियः । अवताराञ्छिवस्याहं वच्मि ते मुनये शृणु
sūta uvāca mune śaunaka sadbhaktyā dattacitto jitendriyaḥ avatārāñchivasyāhaṁ vacmi te munaye śṛṇu
Suta said: O sage Shaunaka, with a mind fixed in true devotion and senses mastered, I shall relate to you the incarnations of Shiva; listen, O sage.
Verse 4 (shiva.shatarudra.1.4)
एतत्पृष्टः पुरा नन्दी शिवमूर्तिस्सतां गतिः । सनत्कुमारेण मुने तमुवाच शिवं स्मरन्
etatpṛṣṭaḥ purā nandī śivamūrtissatāṁ gatiḥ sanatkumāreṇa mune tamuvāca śivaṁ smaran
Long ago Nandi, who is Shiva's own form and the refuge of the virtuous, was asked this very question by Sanatkumara; remembering Shiva, he related it, O sage.
Verse 5 (shiva.shatarudra.1.5)
नन्दीश्वर उवाच । असङ्ख्याता हि कल्पेषु विभोः सर्वेश्वरस्य वै । अवतारास्तथापीह वच्म्यहं तान्यथामति
nandīśvara uvāca asaṅkhyātā hi kalpeṣu vibhoḥ sarveśvarasya vai avatārāstathāpīha vacmyahaṁ tānyathāmati
Nandishvara said: The incarnations of the all-pervading Lord of all, across the kalpas, are indeed countless; yet I shall describe them here as best I can.
Verse 6 (shiva.shatarudra.1.6)
एकोनविंशकः कल्पो विज्ञेयः श्वेतलोहितः । सद्योजातावतारस्तु प्रथमः परिकीर्तितः
ekonaviṁśakaḥ kalpo vijñeyaḥ śvetalohitaḥ sadyojātāvatārastu prathamaḥ parikīrtitaḥ
The nineteenth kalpa is known as Shvetalohita; therein the Sadyojata incarnation is proclaimed as the first.
Verse 7 (shiva.shatarudra.1.7)
तस्मिंस्तत्परमं ब्रह्म ध्यायतो ब्रह्मणस्तथा । उत्पन्नस्तु शिखायुक्तः कुमारः श्वेतलोहितः
tasmiṁstatparamaṁ brahma dhyāyato brahmaṇastathā utpannastu śikhāyuktaḥ kumāraḥ śvetalohitaḥ
In that kalpa, as Brahma meditated upon the Supreme Brahman, there arose a topknotted youth of white-and-red hue.
Verse 8 (shiva.shatarudra.1.8)
तं दृष्ट्वा पुरुषं ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मरूपिणमीश्वरम् । ज्ञात्वा ध्यात्वा स हृदये ववन्दे प्रयताञ्जलिः
taṁ dṛṣṭvā puruṣaṁ brahmā brahmarūpiṇamīśvaram jñātvā dhyātvā sa hṛdaye vavande prayatāñjaliḥ
Seeing that person, Brahma recognized him through meditation as the Lord in the form of Brahman, and bowed to him within his heart with reverently folded hands.
Verse 9 (shiva.shatarudra.1.9)
सद्योजातं शिवं बुद्ध्वा जहर्ष भुवनेश्वरः । मुहुर्मुहुश्च सद्बुद्ध्या परं तं समचिन्तयत्
sadyojātaṁ śivaṁ buddhvā jaharṣa bhuvaneśvaraḥ muhurmuhuśca sadbuddhyā paraṁ taṁ samacintayat
Recognizing him as Shiva in the Sadyojata form, the Lord of the worlds rejoiced, and again and again, with a pure mind, meditated upon that Supreme One.
Verse 10 (shiva.shatarudra.1.10)
ततोऽस्य ध्यायतः श्वेताः प्रादुर्भूता यशस्विनः । कुमाराः परविज्ञानपरब्रह्मस्वरूपिणः
tato’sya dhyāyataḥ śvetāḥ prādurbhūtā yaśasvinaḥ kumārāḥ paravijñānaparabrahmasvarūpiṇaḥ
Then, as he meditated, there appeared radiant white youths of great renown, embodiments of supreme knowledge and the supreme Brahman.
Verse 11 (shiva.shatarudra.1.11)
सुनन्दो नन्दनश्चैव विश्वनन्दोपनन्दनौ । शिष्यास्तस्य महात्मानो यैस्तद्ब्रह्म समावृतम्
sunando nandanaścaiva viśvanandopanandanau śiṣyāstasya mahātmāno yaistadbrahma samāvṛtam
Sunanda, Nandana, Vishvananda and Upanandana — these great-souled ones became his disciples, by whom that Brahman was surrounded.
Verse 12 (shiva.shatarudra.1.12)
सद्योजातश्च वै शम्भुर्ददौ ज्ञानं च वेधसे । सर्गशक्तिमपि प्रीत्या प्रसन्नः परमेश्वरः
sadyojātaśca vai śambhurdadau jñānaṁ ca vedhase sargaśaktimapi prītyā prasannaḥ parameśvaraḥ
Shambhu, in the Sadyojata form, being pleased, lovingly bestowed both knowledge and the power of creation upon Brahma, the Creator.
Verse 13 (shiva.shatarudra.1.13)
ततो विंशतिमः कल्पो रक्तो नाम प्रकीर्तितः । ब्रह्मा यत्र महातेजा रक्तवर्णमधारयत्
tato viṁśatimaḥ kalpo rakto nāma prakīrtitaḥ brahmā yatra mahātejā raktavarṇamadhārayat
Then came the twentieth kalpa, called Rakta (red), in which Brahma, of great splendor, assumed a red hue.
Verse 14 (shiva.shatarudra.1.14)
ध्यायतः पुत्रकामस्य प्रादुर्भूतो विधेः सुतः । रक्तमाल्याम्बरधरो रक्ताक्षो रक्तभूषणः
dhyāyataḥ putrakāmasya prādurbhūto vidheḥ sutaḥ raktamālyāmbaradharo raktākṣo raktabhūṣaṇaḥ
As Brahma, desiring a son, meditated, a son appeared to him — wearing red garlands and garments, red-eyed, adorned with red ornaments.
Verse 15 (shiva.shatarudra.1.15)
स तं दृष्ट्वा महात्मानं कुमारं ध्यानमाश्रितः । वामदेवं शिवं ज्ञात्वा प्रणनाम कृताञ्जलिः
sa taṁ dṛṣṭvā mahātmānaṁ kumāraṁ dhyānamāśritaḥ vāmadevaṁ śivaṁ jñātvā praṇanāma kṛtāñjaliḥ
Seeing that great-souled youth, and recognizing through meditation that he was Shiva in the Vamadeva form, Brahma bowed with folded hands.
Verse 16 (shiva.shatarudra.1.16)
ततस्तस्य सुता ह्यासंश्चत्वारो रक्तवाससः । विरजाश्च विवाहश्च विशोको विश्वभावनः
tatastasya sutā hyāsaṁścatvāro raktavāsasaḥ virajāśca vivāhaśca viśoko viśvabhāvanaḥ
Then he had four sons, clad in red — Viraja, Vivaha, Vishoka and Vishvabhavana.
Verse 17 (shiva.shatarudra.1.17)
वामदेवः स वै शम्भुर्ददौ ज्ञानं च वेधसे । सर्गशक्तिमपि प्रीत्या प्रसन्नः परमेश्वरः
vāmadevaḥ sa vai śambhurdadau jñānaṁ ca vedhase sargaśaktimapi prītyā prasannaḥ parameśvaraḥ
That Shambhu, in the Vamadeva form, pleased, lovingly gave to Brahma both knowledge and the power of creation.
Verse 18 (shiva.shatarudra.1.18)
एकविंशतिमः कल्पः पीतवासा इति स्मृतः । ब्रह्मा यत्र महाभागः पीतवासा बभूव ह
ekaviṁśatimaḥ kalpaḥ pītavāsā iti smṛtaḥ brahmā yatra mahābhāgaḥ pītavāsā babhūva ha
The twenty-first kalpa is remembered as Pitavasa (yellow-robed), wherein the most fortunate Brahma became clad in yellow.
Verse 19 (shiva.shatarudra.1.19)
ध्यायतः पुत्रकामस्य विधेर्जातः कुमारकः । पीतवस्त्रादिकप्रौढो महातेजा महाभुजः
dhyāyataḥ putrakāmasya vidherjātaḥ kumārakaḥ pītavastrādikaprauḍho mahātejā mahābhujaḥ
As Brahma, desiring a son, meditated, a youth was born to him, mature and clad in yellow garments, of great splendor and mighty arms.
Verse 20 (shiva.shatarudra.1.20)
तं दृष्ट्वा ध्यानसंयुक्तं ज्ञात्वा तत्पुरुषं शिवम् । प्रणनाम ततो बुद्ध्या गायत्रीं शाङ्करीं विधिः
taṁ dṛṣṭvā dhyānasaṁyuktaṁ jñātvā tatpuruṣaṁ śivam praṇanāma tato buddhyā gāyatrīṁ śāṅkarīṁ vidhiḥ
Seeing him and, through meditation, recognizing him as Shiva in the Tatpurusha form, Brahma bowed, and then, with understanding, recited the Shankari Gayatri.
Verse 21 (shiva.shatarudra.1.21)
जपित्वा तु महादेवीं सर्वलोकनमस्कृताम् । प्रसन्नस्तु महादेवो ध्यानयुक्तेन चेतसा
japitvā tu mahādevīṁ sarvalokanamaskṛtām prasannastu mahādevo dhyānayuktena cetasā
Having recited that great mantra which all the worlds revere, Mahadeva became pleased, his mind fixed in meditation.
Verse 22 (shiva.shatarudra.1.22)
ततोऽस्य पार्श्वतो दिव्याः प्रादुर्भूताः कुमारकाः । पीतवस्त्रा हि सकला योगमार्गप्रवर्तकाः
tato’sya pārśvato divyāḥ prādurbhūtāḥ kumārakāḥ pītavastrā hi sakalā yogamārgapravartakāḥ
Then, at his side, divine youths appeared, all clad in yellow, propagators of the path of yoga.
Verse 23 (shiva.shatarudra.1.23)
ततस्तस्मिन्गते कल्पे पीतवर्णे स्वयम्भुवः । पुनरन्यः प्रवृत्तस्तु कल्पो नाम्ना शिवस्तु स
tatastasmingate kalpe pītavarṇe svayambhuvaḥ punaranyaḥ pravṛttastu kalpo nāmnā śivastu sa
Then, when that yellow-hued kalpa of the Self-born had passed, another kalpa began, named Shiva.
Verse 24 (shiva.shatarudra.1.24)
एकार्णवे संव्यतीते दिव्यवर्षसहस्रके । स्रष्टुकामः प्रजा ब्रह्मा चिन्तयामास दुःखितः
ekārṇave saṁvyatīte divyavarṣasahasrake sraṣṭukāmaḥ prajā brahmā cintayāmāsa duḥkhitaḥ
When a thousand divine years had passed amid the single ocean of dissolution, Brahma, desiring to create beings, fell into sorrowful thought.
Verse 25 (shiva.shatarudra.1.25)
ततोऽपश्यन्महातेजाः प्रादुर्भूतं कुमारकम् । कृष्णवर्णं महावीर्यं दीप्यमानं स्वतेजसा
tato’paśyanmahātejāḥ prādurbhūtaṁ kumārakam kṛṣṇavarṇaṁ mahāvīryaṁ dīpyamānaṁ svatejasā
Then that greatly splendorous Brahma saw a youth appear — dark-hued, of great valor, blazing with his own radiance.
Verse 26 (shiva.shatarudra.1.26)
धृतकृष्णाम्बरोष्णीषं कृष्णयज्ञोपवीतिनम् । कृष्णेन मौलिनायुक्तं कृष्णस्नानानुलेपनम्
dhṛtakṛṣṇāmbaroṣṇīṣaṁ kṛṣṇayajñopavītinam kṛṣṇena maulināyuktaṁ kṛṣṇasnānānulepanam
He wore a black garment and turban, a black sacred thread, was adorned with a black crest, and anointed with a black unguent after bathing.
Verse 27 (shiva.shatarudra.1.27)
स तं दृष्ट्वा महात्मानमघोरं घोरविक्रमम् । ववन्दे देवदेवेशमद्भुतं कृष्णपिङ्गलम्
sa taṁ dṛṣṭvā mahātmānamaghoraṁ ghoravikramam vavande devadeveśamadbhutaṁ kṛṣṇapiṅgalam
Seeing that great soul Aghora, of terrible valor, Brahma bowed to that wondrous, dark-tawny God of gods.
Verse 28 (shiva.shatarudra.1.28)
अघोरं तु ततो ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मरूपं व्यचिन्तयत् । तुष्टाव वाग्भिरिष्टाभिर्भक्तवत्सलमव्ययम्
aghoraṁ tu tato brahmā brahmarūpaṁ vyacintayat tuṣṭāva vāgbhiriṣṭābhirbhaktavatsalamavyayam
Brahma then meditated upon Aghora as the form of Brahman, and praised with cherished words that imperishable one who loves his devotees.
Verse 29 (shiva.shatarudra.1.29)
अथास्य पार्श्वतः कृष्णाः कृष्णस्नानानुलेपनाः । चत्वारस्तु महात्मानः सम्बभूवुः कुमारकाः
athāsya pārśvataḥ kṛṣṇāḥ kṛṣṇasnānānulepanāḥ catvārastu mahātmānaḥ sambabhūvuḥ kumārakāḥ
Then, at his side, four great-souled dark youths, anointed with black unguent, came into being.
Verse 30 (shiva.shatarudra.1.30)
कृष्ण कृष्णशिखश्चैव कृष्णास्यः कृष्णकण्ठधृक् । इति तेऽव्यक्तनामानः शिवरूपाः सुतेजसः
kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇaśikhaścaiva kṛṣṇāsyaḥ kṛṣṇakaṇṭhadhṛk iti te’vyaktanāmānaḥ śivarūpāḥ sutejasaḥ
Krishna, Krishnashikha, Krishnasya and Krishnakanthadhrik — thus, of hidden name, forms of Shiva, greatly radiant, were they.
Verse 31 (shiva.shatarudra.1.31)
एवम्भूता महात्मानो ब्रह्मणः सृष्टिहेतवे । योगं प्रवर्तयामासुर्घोराख्यं महदद्भुतम्
evambhūtā mahātmāno brahmaṇaḥ sṛṣṭihetave yogaṁ pravartayāmāsurghorākhyaṁ mahadadbhutam
Thus these great souls, for the sake of Brahma's creation, propagated the great and wondrous yoga called Ghora.
Verse 32 (shiva.shatarudra.1.32)
अथान्यो ब्रह्मणः कल्पः प्रावर्तत मुनीश्वराः । विश्वरूप इति ख्यातो नामतः परमाद्भुतः
athānyo brahmaṇaḥ kalpaḥ prāvartata munīśvarāḥ viśvarūpa iti khyāto nāmataḥ paramādbhutaḥ
O lords of sages, then another kalpa of Brahma began, known by the name Vishvarupa, most wondrous.
Verse 33 (shiva.shatarudra.1.33)
ब्रह्मणः पुत्रकामस्य ध्यायतो मनसा शिवम् । प्रादुर्भूता महानादा विश्वरूपा सरस्वती
brahmaṇaḥ putrakāmasya dhyāyato manasā śivam prādurbhūtā mahānādā viśvarūpā sarasvatī
As Brahma, desiring a son, meditated upon Shiva in his mind, there appeared the great-sounding, all-formed Sarasvati.
Verse 34 (shiva.shatarudra.1.34)
तथाविधः स भगवानीशानः परमेश्वरः । शुद्धस्फटिकसङ्काशः सर्वाभरणभूषितः
tathāvidhaḥ sa bhagavānīśānaḥ parameśvaraḥ śuddhasphaṭikasaṅkāśaḥ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitaḥ
That Lord Ishana, the Supreme Ruler, thus manifest, resembled pure crystal and was adorned with every ornament.
Verse 35 (shiva.shatarudra.1.35)
तं दृष्ट्वा प्रणनामासौ ब्रह्मेशानमजं विभुम् । सर्वगं सर्वदं सर्वं सुरूपं रूपवर्जितम्
taṁ dṛṣṭvā praṇanāmāsau brahmeśānamajaṁ vibhum sarvagaṁ sarvadaṁ sarvaṁ surūpaṁ rūpavarjitam
Seeing him, Brahma bowed to that Ishana — unborn, all-pervading, going everywhere, giver of all, all things, of fair form yet beyond all form.
Verse 36 (shiva.shatarudra.1.36)
ईशानोऽपि तथादिश्य सन्मार्गं ब्रह्मणे विभुः । सशक्तिः कल्पयाञ्चक्रे स बालांश्चतुरः शुभान्
īśāno’pi tathādiśya sanmārgaṁ brahmaṇe vibhuḥ saśaktiḥ kalpayāñcakre sa bālāṁścaturaḥ śubhān
Ishana too, having thus instructed Brahma in the true path, that mighty lord, together with his Shakti, created four auspicious boys.
Verse 37 (shiva.shatarudra.1.37)
जटी मुण्डी शिखण्डी च अर्धमुण्डश्च जज्ञिरे । योगेनादिश्य सद्धर्मं कृत्वा योगगतिं गताः
jaṭī muṇḍī śikhaṇḍī ca ardhamuṇḍaśca jajñire yogenādiśya saddharmaṁ kṛtvā yogagatiṁ gatāḥ
Jati, Mundi, Shikhandi and Ardhamunda were born; having taught true dharma through yoga, they attained the path of yoga.
Verse 38 (shiva.shatarudra.1.38)
एवं सङ्क्षेपतः प्रोक्तः सद्यादीनां समुद्भवः । सनत्कुमार सर्वज्ञ लोकानां हितकाम्यया
evaṁ saṅkṣepataḥ proktaḥ sadyādīnāṁ samudbhavaḥ sanatkumāra sarvajña lokānāṁ hitakāmyayā
Thus, O all-knowing Sanatkumara, has the origin of Sadyojata and the rest been told in brief, for the welfare of the worlds.
Verse 39 (shiva.shatarudra.1.39)
अथ तेषां महाप्राज्ञ व्यवहारं यथायथम् । त्रिलोकहितकारं हि सर्वं ब्रह्माण्डसंस्थितम्
atha teṣāṁ mahāprājña vyavahāraṁ yathāyatham trilokahitakāraṁ hi sarvaṁ brahmāṇḍasaṁsthitam
Now, O greatly wise one, hear their true functioning — all of it, established throughout the universe, working for the welfare of the three worlds.
Verse 40 (shiva.shatarudra.1.40)
ईशानः पुरुषोऽघोरो वामसंज्ञस्तथैव च । ब्रह्मसंज्ञा महेशस्य मूर्तयः पञ्च विश्रुताः
īśānaḥ puruṣo’ghoro vāmasaṁjñastathaiva ca brahmasaṁjñā maheśasya mūrtayaḥ pañca viśrutāḥ
Ishana, Purusha, Aghora, the one called Vama, and Brahma — these are the five renowned forms of Mahesha.
Verse 41 (shiva.shatarudra.1.41)
ईशानः शिवरूपश्च गरीयान्प्रथमः स्मृतः । भोक्तारं प्रकृतेः साक्षात्क्षेत्रज्ञमधितिष्ठति
īśānaḥ śivarūpaśca garīyānprathamaḥ smṛtaḥ bhoktāraṁ prakṛteḥ sākṣātkṣetrajñamadhitiṣṭhati
Ishana, the form of Shiva and the greatest, is remembered as first; he presides directly over the Kshetrajna, the experiencer of Prakriti.
Verse 42 (shiva.shatarudra.1.42)
शैवस्तत्पुरुषाख्यश्च स्वरूपो हि द्वितीयकः । गुणाश्रयात्मकं भोग्यं सर्वज्ञमधितिष्ठति
śaivastatpuruṣākhyaśca svarūpo hi dvitīyakaḥ guṇāśrayātmakaṁ bhogyaṁ sarvajñamadhitiṣṭhati
The Shaiva form called Tatpurusha is the second; it presides over the all-knowing object of experience which is the substratum of the gunas.
Verse 43 (shiva.shatarudra.1.43)
धर्माय स्वाङ्गसंयुक्तं बुद्धितत्त्वं पिनाकिनः । अघोराख्यस्वरूपो यस्तिष्ठत्यन्तस्तृतीयकः
dharmāya svāṅgasaṁyuktaṁ buddhitattvaṁ pinākinaḥ aghorākhyasvarūpo yastiṣṭhatyantastṛtīyakaḥ
The third form of the wielder of the Pinaka bow, called Aghora, resides within the principle of buddhi, joined to his own limbs, for the sake of dharma.
Verse 44 (shiva.shatarudra.1.44)
वामदेवाह्वयो रूपश्चतुर्थः शङ्करस्य हि । अहङ्कृतेरधिष्ठानो बहुकार्यकरः सदा
vāmadevāhvayo rūpaścaturthaḥ śaṅkarasya hi ahaṅkṛteradhiṣṭhāno bahukāryakaraḥ sadā
The fourth form of Shankara, called Vamadeva, is the substratum of ahamkara, ever performing many functions.
Verse 45 (shiva.shatarudra.1.45)
ईशानाह्वस्वरूपो हि शङ्करस्येश्वरः सदा । श्रोत्रस्य वचसश्चापि विभोर्व्योम्नस्तथैव च
īśānāhvasvarūpo hi śaṅkarasyeśvaraḥ sadā śrotrasya vacasaścāpi vibhorvyomnastathaiva ca
The form of Shankara called Ishana is ever the lord of the ear, of speech, and likewise of the all-pervading ether.
Verse 46 (shiva.shatarudra.1.46)
त्वक्पाणिस्पर्शवायूनामीश्वरं रूपमैश्वरम् । पुरुषाख्यं विचारज्ञा मतिमन्तः प्रचक्षते
tvakpāṇisparśavāyūnāmīśvaraṁ rūpamaiśvaram puruṣākhyaṁ vicārajñā matimantaḥ pracakṣate
The wise, discerning ones declare the lordly form called Purusha to be the ruler of skin, hands, touch and wind.
Verse 47 (shiva.shatarudra.1.47)
वपुषश्च रसस्यापि रूपस्याग्नेस्तथैव च । अघोराख्यमधिष्ठानं रूपं प्राहुर्मनीषिणः
vapuṣaśca rasasyāpi rūpasyāgnestathaiva ca aghorākhyamadhiṣṭhānaṁ rūpaṁ prāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ
The wise declare the form called Aghora to be the presiding principle of the body, of taste, of form, and likewise of fire.
Verse 48 (shiva.shatarudra.1.48)
रशनायाश्च पायोश्च रसस्यापां तथैव च । ईश्वरं वामदेवाख्यं स्वरूपं शाङ्करं स्मृतम्
raśanāyāśca pāyośca rasasyāpāṁ tathaiva ca īśvaraṁ vāmadevākhyaṁ svarūpaṁ śāṅkaraṁ smṛtam
The Shankara-form called Vamadeva is remembered as the lord of the organ and act of excretion, and likewise of taste and water.
Verse 49 (shiva.shatarudra.1.49)
घ्राणस्य चैवोपस्थस्य गन्धस्य च भुवस्तथा । सद्योजाताह्वयं रूपमीश्वरं शाङ्करं विदुः
ghrāṇasya caivopasthasya gandhasya ca bhuvastathā sadyojātāhvayaṁ rūpamīśvaraṁ śāṅkaraṁ viduḥ
The learned know the Shankara-form called Sadyojata as the lord of smell, of the generative organ, of odor, and likewise of earth.
Verse 50 (shiva.shatarudra.1.50)
इमे स्वरूपाः शम्भोर्हि वन्दनीयाः प्रयत्नतः । श्रेयोऽर्थिभिर्नरैर्नित्यं श्रेयसामेकहेतवः
ime svarūpāḥ śambhorhi vandanīyāḥ prayatnataḥ śreyo’rthibhirnarairnityaṁ śreyasāmekahetavaḥ
These forms of Shambhu are to be reverently worshipped with effort by men seeking welfare — they alone are the cause of all good.
Verse 51 (shiva.shatarudra.1.51)
यः पठेच्छृणुयाद्वापि सद्यादीनां समुद्भवम् । स भुक्त्वा सकलान्कामान्प्रयाति परमां गतिम् ॥
yaḥ paṭhecchṛṇuyādvāpi sadyādīnāṁ samudbhavam sa bhuktvā sakalānkāmānprayāti paramāṁ gatim
Whoever reads or hears this account of the origin of Sadyojata and the rest, having enjoyed all desires, attains the supreme state.
