The Sharabha Incarnation, Part 1

Verse 1 (shiva.shatarudra.11.1)

नन्दीश्वर उवाच । एवमभ्यर्थितो देवैर्मतिं चक्रे कृपालयः । महातेजो नृसिंहाख्यं संहर्त्तुं परमेश्वरः

nandīśvara uvāca evamabhyarthito devairmatiṁ cakre kṛpālayaḥ mahātejo nṛsiṁhākhyaṁ saṁharttuṁ parameśvaraḥ

Nandishvara said: Thus entreated by the gods, the abode of compassion, the Supreme Lord of great splendor, resolved to subdue the one named Narasimha.

Verse 2 (shiva.shatarudra.11.2)

तदूर्ध्वं स्मृतवान् रुद्रो वीरभद्रं महाबलम् । आत्मनो भैरवं रूपं प्राह प्रलयकारकम्

tadūrdhvaṁ smṛtavān rudro vīrabhadraṁ mahābalam ātmano bhairavaṁ rūpaṁ prāha pralayakārakam

Thereupon Rudra called to mind Virabhadra of great strength, his own Bhairava form, the bringer of dissolution.

Verse 3 (shiva.shatarudra.11.3)

आजगाम ततः सद्यो गणानामग्रणीर्हसन् । साट्टहासैर्गणवरैरुत्पतद्भिरितस्ततः

ājagāma tataḥ sadyo gaṇānāmagraṇīrhasan sāṭṭahāsairgaṇavarairutpatadbhiritastataḥ

Then at once he came, the foremost of the ganas, laughing, accompanied by the finest of the ganas, leaping about here and there with loud laughter.

Verse 4 (shiva.shatarudra.11.4)

नृसिंहरूपैरत्युग्रैः कोटिभिः परिवारितः । माद्यद्भिरभितो वीरैर्नृत्यद्भिश्च मुदान्वितैः

nṛsiṁharūpairatyugraiḥ koṭibhiḥ parivāritaḥ mādyadbhirabhito vīrairnṛtyadbhiśca mudānvitaiḥ

Surrounded by crores of most terrible ones in Narasimha-like forms, by intoxicated heroes all about, dancing and filled with delight.

Verse 5 (shiva.shatarudra.11.5)

क्रीडद्भिश्च महावीरैर्ब्रह्माद्यैः कन्दुकैरिव । अदृष्टपूर्वैरन्यैश्च वेष्टितो वीरवन्दितः

krīḍadbhiśca mahāvīrairbrahmādyaiḥ kandukairiva adṛṣṭapūrvairanyaiśca veṣṭito vīravanditaḥ

Surrounded also by great heroes at play, tossing Brahma and the other gods about like balls, and by other beings never seen before — he, honored by heroes.

Verse 6 (shiva.shatarudra.11.6)

कल्पान्तज्वलनज्वालो विलसल्लोचनत्रयः । अशस्त्रो हि जटाजूटी ज्वलद् बालेन्दुमण्डितः

kalpāntajvalanajvālo vilasallocanatrayaḥ aśastro hi jaṭājūṭī jvalad bālendumaṇḍitaḥ

His form ablaze like the fire at the end of a kalpa, his three eyes flashing; though weaponless, with matted locks, adorned with a blazing crescent moon.

Verse 7 (shiva.shatarudra.11.7)

बालेन्दुवलयाकारतीक्ष्णदंष्ट्राङ्कुरद्वयः । आखण्डलधनुःखण्डसन्निभभ्रूलतान्वितः

bālenduvalayākāratīkṣṇadaṁṣṭrāṅkuradvayaḥ ākhaṇḍaladhanuḥkhaṇḍasannibhabhrūlatānvitaḥ

With two sharp fang-tips curved like the crescent moon, his eyebrow-creepers resembling a fragment of Indra's bow, the rainbow.

Verse 8 (shiva.shatarudra.11.8)

महाप्रचण्डहुङ्कारबधिरीकृतदिङ्मुखः । नीलमेघाञ्जनश्यामो भीषणः श्मश्रुलोऽद्भुतः

mahāpracaṇḍahuṅkārabadhirīkṛtadiṅmukhaḥ nīlameghāñjanaśyāmo bhīṣaṇaḥ śmaśrulo’dbhutaḥ

Deafening the directions with his great and terrible roar, dark as a blue rain-cloud or collyrium, fearsome, bearded, and wondrous.

Verse 9 (shiva.shatarudra.11.9)

वाद्यखण्डमखण्डाभ्यां भ्रामयंस्त्रिशिखं मुहुः । वीरभद्रोऽपि भगवान्वीरशक्तिविजृम्भितः

vādyakhaṇḍamakhaṇḍābhyāṁ bhrāmayaṁstriśikhaṁ muhuḥ vīrabhadro’pi bhagavānvīraśaktivijṛmbhitaḥ

Whirling his trident again and again amid the sounding of instruments, with his two unbroken arms, Lord Virabhadra, his heroic power fully manifest—

Verse 10 (shiva.shatarudra.11.10)

स्वयं विज्ञापयामास किमत्र स्मृतिकारणम् । आज्ञापय जगत्स्वामिन् प्रसादः क्रियतां मयि

svayaṁ vijñāpayāmāsa kimatra smṛtikāraṇam ājñāpaya jagatsvāmin prasādaḥ kriyatāṁ mayi

—himself asked: 'What is the reason I have been called to mind here? Command me, O Lord of the universe; be gracious to me.'

Verse 11 (shiva.shatarudra.11.11)

नन्दीश्वर उवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य महेशानो वीरभद्रोक्तमादरात् । विलोक्य वचनं प्रीत्या प्रोवाच खलदण्डधृक्

nandīśvara uvāca ityākarṇya maheśāno vīrabhadroktamādarāt vilokya vacanaṁ prītyā provāca khaladaṇḍadhṛk

Nandishvara said: Hearing this, Mahesha, respectfully regarding Virabhadra's words with affection, then spoke — he who bears the rod for the wicked.

Verse 12 (shiva.shatarudra.11.12)

शङ्कर उवाच । अकाले भयमुत्पन्नं देवानामपि भैरवम् । ज्वलितः स नृसिंहाग्निः शमयैनं दुरासदम्

śaṅkara uvāca akāle bhayamutpannaṁ devānāmapi bhairavam jvalitaḥ sa nṛsiṁhāgniḥ śamayainaṁ durāsadam

Shankara said: An untimely and terrible fear has arisen even for the gods; that fire of Narasimha has blazed up — pacify this one who is hard to approach.

Verse 13 (shiva.shatarudra.11.13)

सान्त्वयन् बोधयादौ तं तेन किन्नोपशाम्यति । ततो मत्परमं भावं भैरवं सम्प्रदर्शय

sāntvayan bodhayādau taṁ tena kinnopaśāmyati tato matparamaṁ bhāvaṁ bhairavaṁ sampradarśaya

First console and instruct him; if by that he does not grow calm, then show him my supreme, terrible Bhairava nature.

Verse 14 (shiva.shatarudra.11.14)

सूक्ष्मं संहृत्य सूक्ष्मेण स्थूलं स्थूलेन तेजसा । वशमानय वन्हिं त्वं वीरभद्र ममाज्ञया

sūkṣmaṁ saṁhṛtya sūkṣmeṇa sthūlaṁ sthūlena tejasā vaśamānaya vanhiṁ tvaṁ vīrabhadra mamājñayā

Subdue what is subtle with the subtle, and what is gross with a gross radiance; bring that fire under control, O Virabhadra, by my command.

Verse 15 (shiva.shatarudra.11.15)

नन्दीश्वर उवाच । इत्यादिष्टो गणाध्यक्षो प्रशान्तं वपुरास्थितः । जगाम रंहसा तत्र यत्रास्ते नरकेसरी

nandīśvara uvāca ityādiṣṭo gaṇādhyakṣo praśāntaṁ vapurāsthitaḥ jagāma raṁhasā tatra yatrāste narakesarī

Nandishvara said: Thus instructed, the lord of the ganas, assuming a tranquil form, went swiftly to where the man-lion resided.

Verse 16 (shiva.shatarudra.11.16)

ततः सम्बोधयामास वीरभद्रो हरो हरिम् । उवाच वाक्यमीशानः पितापुत्रमिवौरसम्

tataḥ sambodhayāmāsa vīrabhadro haro harim uvāca vākyamīśānaḥ pitāputramivaurasam

Then Virabhadra, an embodiment of Hara, addressed Hari; the Lord spoke to him as a father would to his own begotten son.

Verse 17 (shiva.shatarudra.11.17)

वीरभद्र उवाच । जगत्सुखाय भगवन्नवतीर्णोऽसि माधव । स्थित्यर्थं त्वं प्रयुक्तोऽसि परेशः परमेष्ठिना

vīrabhadra uvāca jagatsukhāya bhagavannavatīrṇo’si mādhava sthityarthaṁ tvaṁ prayukto’si pareśaḥ parameṣṭhinā

Virabhadra said: O Lord Madhava, you have descended for the happiness of the world; you, the Supreme Lord, have been appointed by the Supreme Being for the maintenance of creation.

Verse 18 (shiva.shatarudra.11.18)

जन्तुचक्रं भगवता प्रच्छन्नं मत्स्यरूपिणा । पुच्छेनैव समाबध्य भ्रमन्नेकार्णवे पुरा

jantucakraṁ bhagavatā pracchannaṁ matsyarūpiṇā pucchenaiva samābadhya bhramannekārṇave purā

Of old, the wheel of creatures, hidden by you as Lord in fish-form, was bound by its tail as you swam about in the single ocean of the deluge.

Verse 19 (shiva.shatarudra.11.19)

बिभर्षि कूर्मरूपेण वाराहेणोद्धृता मही । अनेन हरिरूपेण हिरण्यकशिपुर्हतः

bibharṣi kūrmarūpeṇa vārāheṇoddhṛtā mahī anena harirūpeṇa hiraṇyakaśipurhataḥ

You uphold the mountain in your tortoise form; the earth was lifted up in your boar form; and by this very form of Hari, Hiranyakashipu has now been slain.

Verse 20 (shiva.shatarudra.11.20)

वामनेन बलिर्बद्धस्त्वया विक्रमता पुनः । त्वमेव सर्वभूतानां प्रभवः प्रभुरव्ययः

vāmanena balirbaddhastvayā vikramatā punaḥ tvameva sarvabhūtānāṁ prabhavaḥ prabhuravyayaḥ

As the dwarf, striding forth, you bound Bali; you alone are the origin of all beings, the imperishable Lord.

Verse 21 (shiva.shatarudra.11.21)

यदा यदा हि लोकस्य दुःखं किञ्चित्प्रजायते । तदा तदावतीर्णस्त्वं करिष्यसि निरामयम्

yadā yadā hi lokasya duḥkhaṁ kiñcitprajāyate tadā tadāvatīrṇastvaṁ kariṣyasi nirāmayam

Whenever any sorrow arises for the world, then, having descended, you set it free from affliction.

Verse 22 (shiva.shatarudra.11.22)

नाधिकस्त्वत्समोऽप्यस्ति हरे शिवपरायणः । त्वया वेदाश्च धर्माश्च शुभमार्गे प्रतिष्ठिताः

nādhikastvatsamo’pyasti hare śivaparāyaṇaḥ tvayā vedāśca dharmāśca śubhamārge pratiṣṭhitāḥ

None greater than you exists, nor even your equal, O Hari devoted to Shiva; by you the Vedas and the dharmas have been established on the auspicious path.

Verse 23 (shiva.shatarudra.11.23)

यदर्थमवतारोऽयं निहतः स हि दानवः । हिरण्यकशिपुश्चैव प्रह्लादोऽपि सुरक्षितः

yadarthamavatāro’yaṁ nihataḥ sa hi dānavaḥ hiraṇyakaśipuścaiva prahlādo’pi surakṣitaḥ

The purpose for which this incarnation was taken has been fulfilled: that demon Hiranyakashipu has indeed been slain, and Prahlada too has been well protected.

Verse 24 (shiva.shatarudra.11.24)

अतीव घोरं भगवन्नरसिंहवपुस्तव । उपसंहर विश्वात्मंस्त्वमेव मम सन्निधौ

atīva ghoraṁ bhagavannarasiṁhavapustava upasaṁhara viśvātmaṁstvameva mama sannidhau

O Lord, your form as Narasimha is exceedingly terrible; withdraw it now, O Soul of the universe, here in my very presence.

Verse 25 (shiva.shatarudra.11.25)

नन्दीश्वर उवाच । इत्युक्तो वीरभद्रेण नृसिंहः शान्तया गिरा । ततोऽधिकं महाघोरं कोपं चक्रे महामदः

nandīśvara uvāca ityukto vīrabhadreṇa nṛsiṁhaḥ śāntayā girā tato’dhikaṁ mahāghoraṁ kopaṁ cakre mahāmadaḥ

Nandishvara said: Thus addressed by Virabhadra with tranquil speech, Narasimha, greatly intoxicated with pride, grew all the more furiously enraged.

Verse 26 (shiva.shatarudra.11.26)

उवाच च महाघोरं कठिनं वचनं तदा । वीरभद्रं महावीरं दंष्ट्राभिर्भीषयन्मुने

uvāca ca mahāghoraṁ kaṭhinaṁ vacanaṁ tadā vīrabhadraṁ mahāvīraṁ daṁṣṭrābhirbhīṣayanmune

And, O sage, baring his fangs to frighten the great hero Virabhadra, he then spoke a most terrible and harsh word.

Verse 27 (shiva.shatarudra.11.27)

नृसिंह उवाच । आगतोऽसि यतस्तत्र गच्छ त्वं मा हितं वद । इदानीं संहरिष्यामि जगदेतच्चराचरम्

nṛsiṁha uvāca āgato’si yatastatra gaccha tvaṁ mā hitaṁ vada idānīṁ saṁhariṣyāmi jagadetaccarācaram

Narasimha said: Go back to wherever you came from — do not speak words of counsel to me! I shall now destroy this entire world of moving and unmoving things.

Verse 28 (shiva.shatarudra.11.28)

संहर्तुर्न हि संहारः स्वतो वा परतोऽपि वा । शासिनं मम सर्वत्र शास्ता कोऽपि न विद्यते

saṁharturna hi saṁhāraḥ svato vā parato’pi vā śāsinaṁ mama sarvatra śāstā ko’pi na vidyate

There is no destruction of the destroyer, neither by itself nor by another; I who rule over all — there exists no ruler over me.

Verse 29 (shiva.shatarudra.11.29)

मत्प्रसादेन सकलमभयं हि प्रवर्तते । अहं हि सर्वशक्तीनां प्रवर्तकनिवर्तकः

matprasādena sakalamabhayaṁ hi pravartate ahaṁ hi sarvaśaktīnāṁ pravartakanivartakaḥ

By my grace alone does all fearlessness come about; I alone am the setter-in-motion and the withdrawer of all powers.

Verse 30 (shiva.shatarudra.11.30)

यद्यद्विभूतिमत्सत्त्वं श्रीमदूर्जितमेव वा । तत्तद्विद्धि गणाध्यक्ष मम तेजोविजृम्भितम्

yadyadvibhūtimatsattvaṁ śrīmadūrjitameva vā tattadviddhi gaṇādhyakṣa mama tejovijṛmbhitam

Whatever being possesses glory, whatever is splendid or mighty, know all of that, O lord of the ganas, to be but a manifestation of my own splendor.

Verse 31 (shiva.shatarudra.11.31)

देवताः परमार्थज्ञं मामेव परमं विदुः । मदंशाः शक्तिसम्पन्ना ब्रह्मशक्रादयः सुराः

devatāḥ paramārthajñaṁ māmeva paramaṁ viduḥ madaṁśāḥ śaktisampannā brahmaśakrādayaḥ surāḥ

The gods know me alone as the knower of the highest truth, the Supreme; Brahma, Indra and the other gods, endowed with power, are but portions of myself.

Verse 32 (shiva.shatarudra.11.32)

मन्नाभिकमलाज्जातः पुरा ब्रह्मा जगत्करः । सर्वाधिकः स्वतन्त्रश्च कर्ता हर्ताखिलेश्वरः

mannābhikamalājjātaḥ purā brahmā jagatkaraḥ sarvādhikaḥ svatantraśca kartā hartākhileśvaraḥ

Of old, Brahma the maker of the world was born from the lotus of my navel; I am supreme over all, independent, the maker and the destroyer, the Lord of all.

Verse 33 (shiva.shatarudra.11.33)

इदं तु मत्परं तेजः किं पुनः श्रोतुमिच्छसि । अतो मां शरणं प्राप्य गच्छ त्वं विगतज्वरः

idaṁ tu matparaṁ tejaḥ kiṁ punaḥ śrotumicchasi ato māṁ śaraṇaṁ prāpya gaccha tvaṁ vigatajvaraḥ

This is my supreme splendor — what more do you wish to hear? Therefore, taking refuge in me, go your way, free from this fever of anxiety.

Verse 34 (shiva.shatarudra.11.34)

अवेहि परमं भावमिदम्भूतं गणेश्वर । मामकं सकलं विश्वं सदेवासुरमानुषम्

avehi paramaṁ bhāvamidambhūtaṁ gaṇeśvara māmakaṁ sakalaṁ viśvaṁ sadevāsuramānuṣam

Know this, O lord of the ganas, to be my supreme, all-pervading nature: this entire universe, together with gods, demons, and men, is mine.

Verse 35 (shiva.shatarudra.11.35)

कालोऽस्म्यहं लोकविनाशहेतु- र्लोकान्समाहर्तुमहं प्रवृत्तः । मृत्योर्मृत्युं विद्धि मां वीरभद्र जीवन्त्येते मत्प्रसादेन देवाः

kālo’smyahaṁ lokavināśahetu- rlokānsamāhartumahaṁ pravṛttaḥ mṛtyormṛtyuṁ viddhi māṁ vīrabhadra jīvantyete matprasādena devāḥ

I am Time, the cause of the destruction of the worlds; I have set out to gather in all the worlds. Know me, O Virabhadra, to be the death of Death itself; it is by my grace alone that these gods still live.

Verse 36 (shiva.shatarudra.11.36)

नन्दीश्वर उवाच । साहङ्कारं वचः श्रुत्वा हरेरमितविक्रमः । विहस्योवाच सावज्ञं ततो विस्फुरिताधरः

nandīśvara uvāca sāhaṅkāraṁ vacaḥ śrutvā hareramitavikramaḥ vihasyovāca sāvajñaṁ tato visphuritādharaḥ

Nandishvara said: Hearing Hari's arrogant speech, he of boundless valor, Virabhadra, laughing and with his lower lip quivering, then spoke with contempt.

Verse 37 (shiva.shatarudra.11.37)

वीरभद्र उवाच । किन्न जानासि विश्वेशं संहर्तारं पिनाकिनम् । असद्वादो विवादश्च विनाशस्त्वयि केवलः

vīrabhadra uvāca kinna jānāsi viśveśaṁ saṁhartāraṁ pinākinam asadvādo vivādaśca vināśastvayi kevalaḥ

Virabhadra said: Do you not know the Lord of the universe, the destroyer, the wielder of the Pinaka bow? This false boasting and this quarrel will bring about your own ruin alone.

Verse 38 (shiva.shatarudra.11.38)

तवान्योन्यावताराणि कानि शेषाणि साम्प्रतम् । कृतानि येन केनैव कथाशेषो भविष्यति

tavānyonyāvatārāṇi kāni śeṣāṇi sāmpratam kṛtāni yena kenaiva kathāśeṣo bhaviṣyati

What other incarnations of yours remain now? By whichever one you take, only a story will be left of you.

Verse 39 (shiva.shatarudra.11.39)

दोषं तं वद येन त्वमवस्थामीदृशीं गतः । तेन संहारदक्षेण दक्षिणाशेषमेष्यसि

doṣaṁ taṁ vada yena tvamavasthāmīdṛśīṁ gataḥ tena saṁhāradakṣeṇa dakṣiṇāśeṣameṣyasi

Tell me the fault by which you have come to such a state; by that very expert destroyer you shall be reduced to a mere remnant.

Verse 40 (shiva.shatarudra.11.40)

प्रकृतिस्त्वं पुमान्रुद्रस्त्वयि वीर्यं समाहितम् । त्वन्नाभिपङ्कजाज्जातः पञ्चवक्त्रः पितामहः

prakṛtistvaṁ pumānrudrastvayi vīryaṁ samāhitam tvannābhipaṅkajājjātaḥ pañcavaktraḥ pitāmahaḥ

You are Prakriti, matter; Rudra is the Purusha, spirit — the potency within you has been placed there by him. From the lotus of your navel was born the five-faced Grandsire, Brahma.

Verse 41 (shiva.shatarudra.11.41)

जगत्त्रयीसर्जनार्थं शङ्करं नीललोहितम् । ललाटेऽचिन्तयत्सोऽयं तपस्युग्रे च संस्थितः

jagattrayīsarjanārthaṁ śaṅkaraṁ nīlalohitam lalāṭe’cintayatso’yaṁ tapasyugre ca saṁsthitaḥ

For the sake of creating the three worlds, he, established in fierce austerity, meditated on Shankara, the blue-red one, within his own forehead.

Verse 42 (shiva.shatarudra.11.42)

तल्ललाटादभूच्छम्भुः सृष्ट्यर्थे तेन भूषणम् । अतोऽहं देवदेवस्य तस्य भैरवरूपिणः

tallalāṭādabhūcchambhuḥ sṛṣṭyarthe tena bhūṣaṇam ato’haṁ devadevasya tasya bhairavarūpiṇaḥ

From that forehead Shambhu appeared, as if his very adornment, for the sake of creation; therefore I belong to that God of gods, in his Bhairava form—

Verse 43 (shiva.shatarudra.11.43)

त्वत्संहारे नियुक्तोऽस्मि विनयेन बलेन च । देवदेवेन रुद्रेण सकलप्रभुणा हरे

tvatsaṁhāre niyukto’smi vinayena balena ca devadevena rudreṇa sakalaprabhuṇā hare

—I have been appointed, by discipline and by strength, to your destruction, O Hari, by Rudra, the God of gods, the Lord of all.

Verse 44 (shiva.shatarudra.11.44)

एकं रक्षो विदार्यैव तच्छक्तिकलया युतः । अहङ्कारावलेपेन गर्जसि त्वमतन्द्रितः

ekaṁ rakṣo vidāryaiva tacchaktikalayā yutaḥ ahaṅkārāvalepena garjasi tvamatandritaḥ

Having merely torn apart a single demon, endowed with but a fraction of his power, you, tireless one, roar out of the conceit of your own pride.

Verse 45 (shiva.shatarudra.11.45)

उपकारो हि साधूनां सुखाय किल सम्मतः । उपकारो ह्यसाधूनामपकाराय केवलम्

upakāro hi sādhūnāṁ sukhāya kila sammataḥ upakāro hyasādhūnāmapakārāya kevalam

A kindness done to the virtuous is indeed, it is agreed, for their happiness; but a kindness done to the wicked serves only for harm.

Verse 46 (shiva.shatarudra.11.46)

यन्नृसिंह महेशानं पुनर्भूतं तु मन्यसे । तर्ह्यज्ञानी महागर्वी विकारी सर्वथा भवान्

yannṛsiṁha maheśānaṁ punarbhūtaṁ tu manyase tarhyajñānī mahāgarvī vikārī sarvathā bhavān

O Narasimha, since you consider even the great Lord Mahesha to be a mere created being, you are in every way ignorant, exceedingly proud, and afflicted with delusion.

Verse 47 (shiva.shatarudra.11.47)

न त्वं स्रष्टा न संहर्ता भर्तापि न नृसिंहक । परतन्त्रो विमूढात्मा न स्वतन्त्रो हि कुत्रचित्

na tvaṁ sraṣṭā na saṁhartā bhartāpi na nṛsiṁhaka paratantro vimūḍhātmā na svatantro hi kutracit

You, little Narasimha, are neither the creator, nor the destroyer, nor even the sustainer; you are dependent, deluded in soul, never independent in anything.

Verse 48 (shiva.shatarudra.11.48)

कुलालचक्रवच्छक्त्या प्रेरितोऽसि पिनाकिना । नानावतारकर्ता त्वं तदधीनः सदा हरे

kulālacakravacchaktyā prerito’si pinākinā nānāvatārakartā tvaṁ tadadhīnaḥ sadā hare

Like a potter's wheel, you are set in motion by the power of the wielder of the Pinaka; you, the maker of various incarnations, O Hari, are ever subject to him.

Verse 49 (shiva.shatarudra.11.49)

अद्यापि तव निक्षिप्तं कपालं कूर्मरूपिणः । हरहारलतामध्ये दग्धं कश्चिन्न बध्यते

adyāpi tava nikṣiptaṁ kapālaṁ kūrmarūpiṇaḥ harahāralatāmadhye dagdhaṁ kaścinna badhyate

Even to this day the shell you cast off in your tortoise incarnation hangs, unburned, amid the very garland worn by Hara — a thing no one accords any importance.

Verse 50 (shiva.shatarudra.11.50)

विस्मृतिः किं तदंशेन दंष्ट्रोत्पातनपीडितम् । वाराहविघ्नहस्तेऽद्य याक्रोशन्तारकारिणा

vismṛtiḥ kiṁ tadaṁśena daṁṣṭrotpātanapīḍitam vārāhavighnahaste’dya yākrośantārakāriṇā

Have you forgotten how, by a mere fragment of that same power, you were made to suffer, your boar-form seized by the trunk, crying out in distress?

Verse 51 (shiva.shatarudra.11.51)

दग्धोऽसि पश्य शूलाग्नेर्विष्वक्सेनच्छलाद्भवान् । दक्षयज्ञे शिरश्छिन्नं मया तेजःस्वरूपिणा

dagdho’si paśya śūlāgnerviṣvaksenacchalādbhavān dakṣayajñe śiraśchinnaṁ mayā tejaḥsvarūpiṇā

Behold, you were once burned by the fire of the trident under a mere pretext; and at Daksha's sacrifice your head was severed by me, who am but a form of that same splendor.

Verse 52 (shiva.shatarudra.11.52)

अद्यापि तव पुत्रस्य ब्रह्मणः पञ्चमं शिरः । छिन्नं न सज्जितं भूयो हरे तद्विस्मृतं त्वया

adyāpi tava putrasya brahmaṇaḥ pañcamaṁ śiraḥ chinnaṁ na sajjitaṁ bhūyo hare tadvismṛtaṁ tvayā

Even now, the fifth head of Brahma, your own son, remains severed, never rejoined again; have you forgotten that too, O Hari?

Verse 53 (shiva.shatarudra.11.53)

निर्जितस्त्वं दधीचेन सङ्ग्रामे समरुद्गणः । कण्डूयमाने शिरसि कथं तद्विस्मृतं त्वया

nirjitastvaṁ dadhīcena saṅgrāme samarudgaṇaḥ kaṇḍūyamāne śirasi kathaṁ tadvismṛtaṁ tvayā

You, together with your host of Maruts, were once defeated in battle by Dadhichi; how, scratching your head, have you forgotten even that?

Verse 54 (shiva.shatarudra.11.54)

चक्रं विक्रमतो यस्य चक्रपाणे तव प्रियम् । कुतः प्राप्तं कृतं केन त्वया तदपि विस्मृतम्

cakraṁ vikramato yasya cakrapāṇe tava priyam kutaḥ prāptaṁ kṛtaṁ kena tvayā tadapi vismṛtam

O Wielder of the Discus, that discus so dear to you, with which you show your valor — whence did you obtain it, and by whom was it made? That too you have forgotten.

Verse 55 (shiva.shatarudra.11.55)

ये मया सकला लोका गृहीतास्त्वं पयोनिधौ । निद्रापरवशः शेषे स कथं सात्त्विको भवान्

ye mayā sakalā lokā gṛhītāstvaṁ payonidhau nidrāparavaśaḥ śeṣe sa kathaṁ sāttviko bhavān

How can you, lying helpless in sleep upon Shesha in the ocean of milk, be truly called sattvic, of pure quality — when it is by me that all these worlds are ultimately held?

Verse 56 (shiva.shatarudra.11.56)

त्वदादिस्तम्बपर्यन्तं रुद्रशक्तिविजृम्भितम् । शक्तिमानभितस्त्वं च ह्यनलात्त्वं विमोहितः

tvadādistambaparyantaṁ rudraśaktivijṛmbhitam śaktimānabhitastvaṁ ca hyanalāttvaṁ vimohitaḥ

From you down to the very blade of grass, everything is but the unfolding of Rudra's power; you too possess whatever strength you have only through delusion born of his fire.

Verse 57 (shiva.shatarudra.11.57)

तत्तेजसो हि माहात्म्यं पुमान्द्रष्टुं न हि क्षमः । अस्थूला ये प्रपश्यन्ति तद्विष्णोः परमं पदम्

tattejaso hi māhātmyaṁ pumāndraṣṭuṁ na hi kṣamaḥ asthūlā ye prapaśyanti tadviṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padam

No ordinary man is capable of beholding the true greatness of that splendor; only those free of grossness perceive that supreme abode which people speak of as Vishnu's highest station.

Verse 58 (shiva.shatarudra.11.58)

द्यावापृथिव्या इन्द्राग्नेर्यमस्य वरुणस्य च । ध्वान्तोदरे शशाङ्के च जनित्वा परमेश्वरः

dyāvāpṛthivyā indrāgneryamasya varuṇasya ca dhvāntodare śaśāṅke ca janitvā parameśvaraḥ

Having brought forth heaven and earth, Indra, Agni, Yama, and Varuna, and having manifested even in the womb of darkness and in the moon, he alone is the true Supreme Lord.

Verse 59 (shiva.shatarudra.11.59)

कालोऽसि त्वं महाकालः कालकालो महेश्वरः । अतस्त्वमुग्रकलया मृत्योर्मृत्युर्भविष्यसि

kālo’si tvaṁ mahākālaḥ kālakālo maheśvaraḥ atastvamugrakalayā mṛtyormṛtyurbhaviṣyasi

You call yourself Time, the great Time, the Death of Death, the great Lord — for this very reason, by his fierce power, you yourself shall be made subject to the true Death of Death.

Verse 60 (shiva.shatarudra.11.60)

स्थिरोऽद्य त्वक्षरो वीरो वीरो विश्वावकः प्रभुः । उपहन्ता ज्वरं भीमो मृगः पक्षी हिरण्मयः

sthiro’dya tvakṣaro vīro vīro viśvāvakaḥ prabhuḥ upahantā jvaraṁ bhīmo mṛgaḥ pakṣī hiraṇmayaḥ

Now he stands ready — steadfast, imperishable, heroic, the protector of the universe, the Lord; the destroyer of fever, terrible, taking the form of beast and bird alike, golden of hue.

Verse 61 (shiva.shatarudra.11.61)

शास्ता शेषस्य जगतस्तत्त्वं नैव चतुर्मुखः । नान्ये च केवलं शम्भुः सर्वशास्ता न संशयः

śāstā śeṣasya jagatastattvaṁ naiva caturmukhaḥ nānye ca kevalaṁ śambhuḥ sarvaśāstā na saṁśayaḥ

The ruler of this entire remaining universe is neither you, nor the four-faced Brahma, nor any other; Shambhu alone is the ruler of all, without doubt.

Verse 62 (shiva.shatarudra.11.62)

इत्थं सर्वं समालोक्य संहारात्मानमात्मना । न विनष्टं त्वमात्मानं कुरु हे नृहरेऽबुध

itthaṁ sarvaṁ samālokya saṁhārātmānamātmanā na vinaṣṭaṁ tvamātmānaṁ kuru he nṛhare’budha

Having thus considered all this fully, O foolish man-lion, recognize by your own understanding the destroyer within yourself, and do not bring about your own ruin.

Verse 63 (shiva.shatarudra.11.63)

नो चेदिदानीं क्रोधस्य महाभैरवरूपिणः । वज्राशनिरिव स्थाणौ त्वयि मृत्युः पतिष्यति

no cedidānīṁ krodhasya mahābhairavarūpiṇaḥ vajrāśaniriva sthāṇau tvayi mṛtyuḥ patiṣyati

Otherwise, even now, like a thunderbolt striking a fixed pillar, death shall fall upon you from the wrath of that great Bhairava form.

Verse 64 (shiva.shatarudra.11.64)

नन्दीश्वर उवाच । इत्युक्त्वा वीरभद्रोऽपि विररामाकुतोभयः । दृष्ट्वा नृसिंहाभिप्रायं क्रोधमूर्त्तिश्शिवस्य सः

nandīśvara uvāca ityuktvā vīrabhadro’pi virarāmākutobhayaḥ dṛṣṭvā nṛsiṁhābhiprāyaṁ krodhamūrttiśśivasya saḥ

Nandishvara said: Having spoken thus, Virabhadra, fearless, fell silent, watching Narasimha's intent — he, the very embodiment of Shiva's wrath.
