Shatarudra Samhita · Chapter 19
The Story of Durvasa
Verse 1 (shiva.shatarudra.19.1)
nandīśvara uvāca athānyaccaritaṁ śambhoḥ śṛṇu prītyā mahāmune yathā babhūva durvāsāḥ śaṅkaro dharmahetave
Nandishvara said: Now hear with love, O great sage, another account of Shambhu — how Shankara became Durvasa for the sake of dharma.
Verse 2 (shiva.shatarudra.19.2)
brahmaputro babhūvātitapasvī brahmavitprabhuḥ anasūyāpatirdhīmānbrahmājñāpratipālakaḥ
He, Atri, became a son of Brahma, a great ascetic, a lord versed in Brahman, the wise husband of Anasuya, and an upholder of Brahma's command.
Verse 3 (shiva.shatarudra.19.3)
sunirdeśād brahmaṇo hi sastrīkaḥ putrakāmyayā sa tryakṣakulanāmānaṁ yayau ca tapase girim
By Brahma's clear instruction, he, together with his wife and desiring a son, went to the mountain called Tryaksha to perform austerity.
Verse 4 (shiva.shatarudra.19.4)
prāṇānāyamya vidhivannirvindhyātaṭinītaṭe tapaścacāra sumahad advandvo'bdaśataṁ muniḥ
Restraining his breath as prescribed, on the bank of the river Nirvindhya, free from the pairs of opposites, the sage performed the great austerity for a hundred years.
Verse 5 (shiva.shatarudra.19.5)
ya eka īśvaraḥ kaścidavikārī mahāprabhuḥ sa me putravaraṁ dadyāditi niścitamānasaḥ
He resolved firmly in his mind: "May whoever is the one changeless, great Lord grant me the boon of a son."
Verse 6 (shiva.shatarudra.19.6)
bahukālo vyatīyāya tasmiṁstapati sattapaḥ āvirbabhūva tasmāttu śucirjvālā mahīyasī
A long time passed as he performed that true austerity; then from him a pure and mighty flame arose.
Verse 7 (shiva.shatarudra.19.7)
tayāsannikhilā lokā dagdhaprāyā munīśvarāḥ tathā surarṣayaḥ sarve pīḍitā vāsavādayaḥ
By that flame all the worlds and the lords of sages were nearly consumed, and likewise all the gods and sages headed by Indra were afflicted.
Verse 8 (shiva.shatarudra.19.8)
atha sarve vāsavādyā surāśca munayo mune brahmasthānaṁ yayuḥ śīghraṁ tajjvālātiprapīḍitāḥ
Then, O sage, all the gods headed by Indra and all the sages, sorely afflicted by that flame, went quickly to Brahma's abode.
Verse 9 (shiva.shatarudra.19.9)
natvā nutvā vidhiṁ devāḥ tatsvaduḥkhaṁ nyavedayan brahmā saha suraistāta viṣṇulokaṁ yayāvaram
The gods, having bowed to and praised Brahma, related their sorrow; then, my child, Brahma, together with the gods, went to the excellent world of Vishnu.
Verse 10 (shiva.shatarudra.19.10)
tatra gatvā ramānāthaṁ natvā nutvā vidhiḥ suraiḥ svaduḥkhaṁ tatsamācakhyau viṣṇave'nantakaṁ mune
O sage, having gone there, Brahma, with the gods, bowed to and praised the Lord of Rama (Vishnu), and related that endless sorrow to him.
Verse 11 (shiva.shatarudra.19.11)
viṣṇuśca vidhinā devai rudrasthānaṁ yayau drutam haraṁ praṇamya tatraitya tuṣṭāva parameśvaram
Then Vishnu too, together with Brahma and the gods, went quickly to the abode of Rudra; arriving there, he bowed to Hara and praised the Supreme Lord.
Verse 12 (shiva.shatarudra.19.12)
stutvā bahutayā viṣṇuḥ svaduḥkhaṁ ca nyavedayat śarvaṁ jvālāsamudbhūtamatreśca tapasaḥ param
Vishnu, having praised him in many ways, related their sorrow to Sharva — the flame that had arisen from Atri's supreme austerity.
Verse 13 (shiva.shatarudra.19.13)
atha tatra sametāstu brahmaviṣṇumaheśvarāḥ mune sammantrayāñcakruranyo'nyaṁ jagatāṁ hitam
O sage, then Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshvara, gathered there, deliberated together for the welfare of the world.
Verse 14 (shiva.shatarudra.19.14)
tadā brahmādayo devāstrayaste varadarṣabhāḥ jagmustadāśramaṁ śīghraṁ varaṁ dātuṁ tadarṣaye
Then those three gods, Brahma and the others, foremost among bestowers of boons, went quickly to that sage's hermitage to grant him a boon.
Verse 15 (shiva.shatarudra.19.15)
svacihnacihnitāṁstānsa dṛṣṭvātrirmunisattamaḥ praṇanāma ca tuṣṭāva vāgbhiriṣṭābhirādarāt
Atri, the best of sages, seeing them recognizable each by his own emblem, bowed and reverently praised them with pleasing words.
Verse 16 (shiva.shatarudra.19.16)
tataḥ sa vismito viprastānuvāca kṛtāñjaliḥ brahmaputro vinītātmā brahmaviṣṇuharābhidhān
Then that son of Brahma, humble of mind and astonished, with joined hands, addressed those three named Brahma, Vishnu, and Hara.
Verse 17 (shiva.shatarudra.19.17)
atriruvāca he brahman he hare rudra pūjyāstrijagatāṁ matāḥ prabhavaśceśvarāḥ sṛṣṭirakṣāsaṁhārakārakāḥ
Atri said: O Brahma, O Hari, O Rudra, worshipped and revered by the three worlds, you are the source, the lords, and the makers of creation, protection, and dissolution.
Verse 18 (shiva.shatarudra.19.18)
eka eva mayā dhyāta īśvaraḥ putrahetave yaḥ kaścidīśvaraḥ khyāto jagatāṁ svastriyā saha
For the sake of a son I meditated upon a single Lord — whoever is renowned as Lord of the worlds, together with his own consort.
Verse 19 (shiva.shatarudra.19.19)
yūyaṁ trayassurāḥ kasmādāgatā varadarṣabhāḥ etanme saṁśayaṁ chittvā tato dattepsitaṁ varam
For what reason have you three gods, foremost bestowers of boons, come here? Having dispelled this doubt of mine, grant me then the boon I desire.
Verse 20 (shiva.shatarudra.19.20)
iti śrutvā vacastasya pratyūcuste surāstrayaḥ yādṛkkṛtaste saṅkalpastathaivābhūnmunīśvara
Hearing his words, the three gods replied: O lord of sages, exactly as you resolved, so it has come to be.
Verse 21 (shiva.shatarudra.19.21)
vayaṁ trayo bhaveśānāḥ samānā varadarṣabhāḥ asmadaṁśabhavāstasmādbhaviṣyanti sutāstrayaḥ
We three gods, equal, lords of existence, foremost bestowers of boons — from our own portions three sons shall be born.
Verse 22 (shiva.shatarudra.19.22)
viditā bhuvane sarve pitroḥ kīrtivivarddhanāḥ ityuktvā trayo devāḥ svadhāmāni yayurmudā
Known throughout the world, they will increase the fame of their parents. Having said this, the three gods joyfully returned to their own abodes.
Verse 23 (shiva.shatarudra.19.23)
varaṁ labdhvā muniḥ so'tha jagāma svāśramaṁ mudā yuto'nusūyayā prīto brahmānandaprado mune
Having obtained the boon, the sage joyfully returned to his own hermitage, and, O sage, dwelt happily with the beloved Anasuya, giver of the bliss of Brahman.
Verse 24 (shiva.shatarudra.19.24)
atha brahmā hariḥ śambhuravateruḥ striyāṁ tataḥ putrarūpaiḥ prasannāste nānālīlāprakāśakāḥ
Then Brahma, Hari, and Shambhu, well pleased, revealing manifold divine sports, descended into that woman, Anasuya, in the form of sons.
Verse 25 (shiva.shatarudra.19.25)
vidheraṁśādvidhurjajñe'nasūyāyāṁ munīśvarāt āvirbabhūvodadhitaḥ kṣipto devaiḥ sa eva hi
From a portion of Brahma, the moon (Vidhu) was born in Anasuya through the great sage Atri; it was he who later, cast away by the gods, arose again from the ocean.
Verse 26 (shiva.shatarudra.19.26)
viṣṇoraṁśāt striyāṁ tasyāmatrerdatto vyajāyata saṁnyāsapaddhatiryena varddhitā paramā mune
From a portion of Vishnu, Datta (Dattatreya) was born in that same wife of Atri, by whom, O sage, the supreme path of renunciation was expanded.
Verse 27 (shiva.shatarudra.19.27)
durvāsā muniśārdūlaḥ śivāṁśānmunisattama jajñe tasyāṁ striyāmatrervaradharmapravartakaḥ
O best of sages, from a portion of Shiva, in that same wife of Atri, the excellent sage Durvasa was born, the establisher of the finest dharma.
Verse 28 (shiva.shatarudra.19.28)
bhūtvā rudraśca durvāsā brahmatejovivarddhanaḥ cakre dharmaparīkṣāṁ ca bahūnāṁ sa dayāparaḥ
That Durvasa, a form of Rudra, one who increases the splendor of Brahman, though himself compassionate, tested the dharma of many.
Verse 29 (shiva.shatarudra.19.29)
sūryavaṁśe samutpanno yo'mbarīṣo nṛpo'bhavat tatparīkṣāmakārṣītsa tāṁ śṛṇu tvaṁ munīśvara
He tested Ambarisha, the king born in the solar dynasty; hear that story, O lord of sages.
Verse 30 (shiva.shatarudra.19.30)
so'mbarīṣo nṛpavaraḥ saptadvīparasāpatiḥ niyamaṁ hi cakārāsāvekādaśyāṁ vrate dṛḍham
That excellent king Ambarisha, lord of the wealth of the seven continents, kept a firm observance of the Ekadashi vow.
Verse 31 (shiva.shatarudra.19.31)
ekādaśyā vrataṁ kṛtvā dvādaśyāṁ caiva pāraṇām kariṣyāmīti sudṛḍhasaṅkalpastu narādhipaḥ
The king's firm resolve was: "Having kept the Ekadashi fast, I shall break it on the Dvadashi."
Verse 32 (shiva.shatarudra.19.32)
jñātvā tanniyamaṁ tasya durvāsā munisattamaḥ tadantikaṁ gataḥ śiṣyairbahubhiḥ śaṅkarāṁśajaḥ
Learning of this vow, Durvasa, the excellent sage born of a portion of Shankara, arrived at his side with many disciples.
Verse 33 (shiva.shatarudra.19.33)
pāraṇe dvādaśīṁ svalpāṁ jñātvā yāvatsa bhojanam karttuṁ vyavasitastāvadāgataṁ sa nyamantrayat
When only a little time remained of the Dvadashi for the breaking of the fast, and just as the king was about to eat, he invited Durvasa, who had arrived.
Verse 34 (shiva.shatarudra.19.34)
tataḥ snānārthamagamaddurvāsāḥ śiṣyasaṁyutaḥ vilambaṁ kṛtavāṁstatra parīkṣārthaṁ munirbahu
Then Durvasa, together with his disciples, went to bathe, and for the sake of testing him the sage delayed there a long while.
Verse 35 (shiva.shatarudra.19.35)
dharmavighnaṁ tadā jñātvā sa nṛpaḥ śāstraśāsanāt jalaṁ prāśyāsthitastatra tadāgamanakāṅkṣayā
Then, knowing that a hindrance to dharma had arisen, the king, by the ordinance of scripture, merely sipped water and remained there awaiting his return.
Verse 36 (shiva.shatarudra.19.36)
etasminnantare tatra durvāsā munirāgataḥ kṛtāśanaṁ nṛpaṁ jñātvā parīkṣārthaṁ dhṛtākṛtiḥ
Meanwhile the sage Durvasa arrived there; learning that the king had eaten, he assumed a stern appearance for the sake of testing him.
Verse 37 (shiva.shatarudra.19.37)
cukrodhāti nṛpe tasminparīkṣārthaṁ vṛṣasya saḥ provāca vacanaṁ tūgraṁ sa muniḥ śaṅkarāṁśajaḥ
That sage, born of a portion of Shankara, grew greatly angry at the king in order to test his righteousness, and spoke a harsh word.
Verse 38 (shiva.shatarudra.19.38)
durvāsā uvāca māṁ nimantrya nṛpābhojya jalaṁ pītaṁ tvayādhama darśayāmi phalaṁ tasya duṣṭadaṇḍadharo hyaham
Durvasa said: O vile king, having invited me, you drank water without first feeding me! I am the wielder of punishment upon the wicked — I shall now show you the fruit of that.
Verse 39 (shiva.shatarudra.19.39)
ityuktvā krodhatāmrākṣo nṛpaṁ dagdhuṁ samudyataḥ samuttasthau drutaṁ cakraṁ tatsthaṁ rakṣārthamaiśvaram
Having said this, his eyes red with fury, he made ready to burn the king; then, for his protection, the divine discus stationed there rose up at once.
Verse 40 (shiva.shatarudra.19.40)
prajajvālāti taṁ cakraṁ muniṁ dagdhuṁ sudarśanam śivarūpaṁ tamajñātvā śivamāyāvimohitam
That Sudarshana discus, not knowing him to be a form of Shiva and deluded by Shiva's own maya, blazed up fiercely to burn the sage.
Verse 41 (shiva.shatarudra.19.41)
etasminnantare vyomavāṇyuvācāśarīriṇī ambarīṣaṁ mahātmānaṁ brahmabhaktaṁ ca vaiṣṇavam
Meanwhile a bodiless voice from the sky spoke to the great-souled Ambarisha, devoted to Brahmins and to Vishnu —
Verse 42 (shiva.shatarudra.19.42)
vyomavāṇyuvāca sudarśanamidaṁ cakraṁ haraye śambhunārpitam śāntaṁ kuru prajvalitamadya durvāsase nṛpa
The voice from the sky said: O king, this Sudarshana discus was given to Hari by Shambhu himself; calm it now, blazing as it is against Durvasa.
Verse 43 (shiva.shatarudra.19.43)
durvāsāyaṁ śivaḥ sākṣātsa cakraṁ haraye'rpitam evaṁ sādhāraṇamuniṁ na jānīhi nṛpottama
This Durvasa is Shiva himself, and it was he who gave that very discus to Hari; O best of kings, do not think him an ordinary sage.
Verse 44 (shiva.shatarudra.19.44)
tava dharmaparīkṣārthamāgato'yaṁ munīśvaraḥ śaraṇaṁ yāhi tasyāśu bhaviṣyatyanyathā layaḥ
This lord of sages has come to test your righteousness; go quickly to his refuge, or else your destruction will follow.
Verse 45 (shiva.shatarudra.19.45)
nandīśvara uvāca ityuktvā ca nabhovāṇī virarāma munīśvara astāvītsa harāṁśaṁ tamambarīṣo'pi cādarāt
Nandishvara said: O lord of sages, having said this the voice from the sky fell silent; and Ambarisha too reverently praised that portion of Hara.
Verse 46 (shiva.shatarudra.19.46)
ambarīṣa uvāca yadyasti dattamiṣṭaṁ ca svadharmo vā svanuṣṭhitaḥ kulaṁ no vipradaivaṁ ceddharerastraṁ praśāmyatu
Ambarisha said: If any gift, sacrifice, or duly performed observance of my own dharma exists in me, if my lineage is beloved of Brahmins and gods, may this weapon of Hari be pacified.
Verse 47 (shiva.shatarudra.19.47)
yadi no bhagavānprīto madbhakto bhaktavatsalaḥ sudarśanamidaṁ cāstraṁ praśāmyatu viśeṣataḥ
If the Lord, ever fond of his devotees, is pleased with me, his devotee, may this Sudarshana weapon be especially pacified.
Verse 48 (shiva.shatarudra.19.48)
nandīśvara uvāca iti stuvati rudrāgre śaivaṁ cakraṁ sudarśanam aśāmyatsarvathā jñātvā taṁ śivāṁśaṁ sulabdhadhīḥ
Nandishvara said: As he thus praised before Rudra, that Shaiva Sudarshana discus, recognizing him with clear understanding as a portion of Shiva, became entirely calmed.
Verse 49 (shiva.shatarudra.19.49)
athāmbarīṣaḥ sa nṛpaḥ praṇanāma ca taṁ munim śivāvatāraṁ saṁjñāya svaparīkṣārthamāgatam
Then King Ambarisha, recognizing that sage as an incarnation of Shiva who had come to test him, bowed before him.
Verse 50 (shiva.shatarudra.19.50)
suprasanno babhūvātha sa muniḥ śaṅkarāṁśajaḥ bhuktvā tasmai varaṁ dattvā svābhīṣṭaṁ svālayaṁ yayau
That sage, born of a portion of Shankara, became greatly pleased; having eaten, and having granted him a boon, he departed happily to his own abode.
Verse 51 (shiva.shatarudra.19.51)
ambarīṣaparīkṣāyāṁ durvāsaścaritaṁ mune proktāmanyaccaritraṁ tvaṁ śṛṇu tasya munīśvara
O lord of sages, this account of Durvasa's testing of Ambarisha has been told; now hear another account of his life that is related.
Verse 52 (shiva.shatarudra.19.52)
punardāśaratheścakre parīkṣāṁ niyamena vai munirūpeṇa kālena yaḥ kṛto niyamo mune
Again he tested the son of Dasharatha (Rama) regarding a vow — a vow set in place by Time itself, in the guise of a sage.
Verse 53 (shiva.shatarudra.19.53)
tadaiva muninā tena saumitriḥ preṣito haṭhāt taṁ tatyāja drutaṁ rāmo bandhuṁ paṇavaśānmune
O sage, at that very moment that sage forcibly sent Lakshmana (Saumitri) away, and Rama, bound by his own pledge, quickly abandoned that kinsman.
Verse 54 (shiva.shatarudra.19.54)
sā kathā viditā loke munibhirbahudhoditā nāto me vistarātproktā jñātā yatsarvathā budhaiḥ
That story is well known throughout the world and has been told by sages in many ways; I have therefore not related it here at length, since the learned already know it fully.
Verse 55 (shiva.shatarudra.19.55)
niyamaṁ sudṛḍhaṁ dṛṣṭvā suprasanno'bhavanmuniḥ durvāsāḥ saprasannātmā varaṁ tasmai pradattavān
Seeing that firm observance of the vow, the sage became greatly pleased; Durvasa, his mind gladdened, granted him a boon.
Verse 56 (shiva.shatarudra.19.56)
śrīkṛṣṇaniyamasyāpi parīkṣāṁ sa cakāra ha tāṁ śṛṇu tvaṁ muniśreṣṭha kathayāmi kathāṁ ca tām
He also tested a vow kept by Shri Krishna; hear that story too, O best of sages — I shall tell it.
Verse 57 (shiva.shatarudra.19.57)
brahmaprārthanayā viṣṇurvasudevasuto'bhavat dharābhārāvatārārthaṁ sādhūnāṁ rakṣaṇāya ca
At Brahma's entreaty, Vishnu became the son of Vasudeva, to relieve the earth of its burden and to protect the righteous.
