Chapter 21All chaptersChapter 23

Verse 1 (shiva.shatarudra.22.1)

nandīśvara uvāca śṛṇu brahmasuta prājña vṛṣeśākhyaṁ munīśvara śivāvatāraṁ sallīlaṁ harigarvaharaṁ varam

Nandishvara said: O wise son of Brahma, O lord of sages, hear of Shiva's excellent incarnation called Vrishesha, of fine divine sport, the destroyer of Hari's pride.

Verse 2 (shiva.shatarudra.22.2)

purā devāsurāḥ sarve jarāmṛtyubhayārditāḥ parasparaṁ ca sandhāya ratnānyāditsavo'bhavan

Formerly all the gods and asuras, afflicted by fear of old age and death, made a pact with one another and became desirous of obtaining treasures.

Verse 3 (shiva.shatarudra.22.3)

tataḥ surāsurāḥ sarve kṣīrodaṁ sāgarottamam udyatā mathituṁ taṁ ca babhūvurmuninandana

O delight of sages, then all the gods and asuras became eager to churn that excellent ocean of milk.

Verse 4 (shiva.shatarudra.22.4)

āsan śucismitāḥ sarve kenedaṁ manthanaṁ bhavet svakāryasiddhaye tasya brahmanniti surāsurāḥ

O Brahmin, all the gods and asuras, smiling purely, wondered: "With what shall this churning be done, for the accomplishment of our purpose?"

Verse 5 (shiva.shatarudra.22.5)

tadā nabhogatā vāṇī meghagambhīraniḥsvanā uvāca devāndaityāṁścaśvāsayantīśvarājñayā

Then a voice from the sky, deep as thunder, by the Lord's command, spoke, reassuring the gods and daityas.

Verse 6 (shiva.shatarudra.22.6)

nabhovāṇyuvāca he devā asurāścaiva manthadhvaṁ kṣīrasāgaram bhavatāṁ balabuddhirhi bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ

The voice from the sky said: O gods and asuras, churn the ocean of milk; your strength and wisdom shall surely increase thereby.

Verse 7 (shiva.shatarudra.22.7)

mandaraṁ caiva manthānaṁ rajjuṁ kuruta vāsukim mithaḥ sarve militvā tu manthanaṁ kurutādarāt

Make Mount Mandara the churning-rod and Vasuki the rope; all of you, joining together, perform the churning with due care.

Verse 8 (shiva.shatarudra.22.8)

nandīśvara uvāca nabhogatāṁ tadā vāṇīṁ niśamyātha surāsurāḥ udyogaṁ cakrire sarve tatkartuṁ munisattama

Nandishvara said: O best of sages, having heard that voice from the sky, the gods and asuras all set about the effort of doing so.

Verse 9 (shiva.shatarudra.22.9)

susandhāyākhilāste vai mandaraṁ parvatottamam kanakābhaṁ ca saralaṁ nānāśobhārcitaṁ yayuḥ

All of them, joining together, went to that excellent Mount Mandara, golden in hue, straight, adorned with manifold splendor.

Verse 10 (shiva.shatarudra.22.10)

suprasādya girīśaṁ taṁ tadājñaptāḥ surāsurāḥ balādutpāṭayāmāsurnetukāmāḥ payo'rṇavam

Having propitiated the lord of that mountain and obtained his consent, the gods and asuras forcibly uprooted it, desiring to bring it to the ocean of milk.

Verse 11 (shiva.shatarudra.22.11)

bhujairutpāṭya te sarve jagmuḥ kṣīrārṇavaṁ mune aśaktā abhavaṁstatra tamānetuṁ hataujasaḥ

O sage, having uprooted it with their arms, they all set out for the ocean of milk, but there, their strength spent, they proved unable to carry it.

Verse 12 (shiva.shatarudra.22.12)

tadbhujaiḥ sa paribhraṣṭaḥ patito mandaro giriḥ sahasātiguruḥ sadyo devadaityopari dhruvam

Slipping from their arms, that exceedingly heavy Mount Mandara suddenly fell straight down upon the gods and daityas.

Verse 13 (shiva.shatarudra.22.13)

evaṁ bhagnodyamā bhagnāḥ sambabhūvuḥ surāsurāḥ cetanāḥ prāpya ca tatastuṣṭuvurjagadīśvaram

Thus their effort was broken and the gods and asuras were themselves crushed; then, regaining consciousness, they praised the Lord of the world.

Verse 14 (shiva.shatarudra.22.14)

tadicchayodyatāḥ sarve punarutthāpya taṁ girim nicikṣipurjale nītvā kṣīrodasyottare taṭe

By his will, all of them, lifting up that mountain again, carried it and cast it into the water on the northern shore of the ocean of milk.

Verse 15 (shiva.shatarudra.22.15)

tataḥ surāsuragaṇā rajjuṁ kṛtvā ca vāsukim ratnānyādātukāmāste mamanthuḥ kṣīrasāgaram

Then the hosts of gods and asuras, having made Vasuki into a rope, churned the ocean of milk, desiring to obtain its treasures.

Verse 16 (shiva.shatarudra.22.16)

kṣīrode mathyamāne tu śrīḥ svarlokamaheśvarī samudbhūtā samudrācca bhṛguputrī haripriyā

As the ocean of milk was churned, Shri, the great goddess of the heavenly world, daughter of Bhrigu and beloved of Hari, arose from the ocean.

Verse 17 (shiva.shatarudra.22.17)

dhanvantariḥ śaśāṅkaśca pārijāto mahādrumaḥ uccaiḥśravāśca turago gaja airāvatastathā

Dhanvantari, the moon, the great tree Parijata, the horse Uchchaihshravas, and the elephant Airavata —

Verse 18 (shiva.shatarudra.22.18)

surā haridhanuḥ śaṅkho gāvaḥ kāmadughāstataḥ kaustubhākhyo maṇiścaiva tathā pīyūṣameva ca

— wine (Sura), Hari's bow, the conch, the wish-fulfilling cows, the jewel Kaustubha, and the nectar of immortality —

Verse 19 (shiva.shatarudra.22.19)

punaśca mathyamāne tu kālakūṭaṁ mahāviṣam yugāntānalabhaṁ jātaṁ surāsurabhayāvaham

— and as the churning continued further, the great poison Kalakuta arose, resembling the fire of cosmic dissolution, striking fear into gods and asuras alike.

Verse 20 (shiva.shatarudra.22.20)

pīyūṣajanmakāle tu bindavo ye bahirgatāḥ tebhyaḥ kāntāḥ samudbhūtā bahvayo hyadbhutadarśanāḥ

At the moment the nectar arose, from the drops that scattered outward, many wondrously beautiful maidens were born.

Verse 21 (shiva.shatarudra.22.21)

śaratpūrṇenduvadanāstaḍitsūryānalaprabhāḥ hārakeyūrakaṭakairdivyaratnairalaṅkṛtāḥ

With faces like the autumn full moon, radiant as lightning, sun, and fire, adorned with divine jeweled necklaces, armlets, and bracelets,

Verse 22 (shiva.shatarudra.22.22)

lāvaṇyāmṛtatoyena tāḥ siñcantyo diśo daśa jagadunmādayantyeva bhrūbhaṅgāyatavīkṣaṇāḥ

— sprinkling the ten directions with the nectar-water of their beauty, their brows arched, their glances long and sweeping, those maidens intoxicated the whole world.

Verse 23 (shiva.shatarudra.22.23)

koṭiśastāḥ samutpannāstvamṛtātkāmanissṛtāḥ tato'mṛtaṁ samutpannaṁ jarāmṛtyunivāraṇam

Millions of them arose from the nectar, born of desire; and after them arose the nectar of immortality itself, the preventer of old age and death.

Verse 24 (shiva.shatarudra.22.24)

lakṣmīṁ śaṅkhaṁ kaustubhaṁ ca khaḍgaṁ jagrāha keśavaḥ jagrāhārko hayaṁ divyamuccaiḥśravasamādarāt

Keshava took Lakshmi, the conch, the Kaustubha jewel, and the sword; the Sun reverently took the divine horse Uchchaihshravas.

Verse 25 (shiva.shatarudra.22.25)

pārijātaṁ taruvaramairāvatamibheśvaram śacīpatiśca jagrāha nirjareśo mahādarāt

Indra, lord of the gods and husband of Shachi, with great reverence took the Parijata tree and the elephant-king Airavata.

Verse 26 (shiva.shatarudra.22.26)

kālakūṭaṁ śaśāṅkaṁ ca devatrāṇāya śaṅkaraḥ svakaṇṭhe dhṛtavān śambhuḥ svecchayā bhaktavatsalaḥ

Shankara, ever fond of his devotees, of his own will held the Kalakuta poison and the moon at his own throat, for the protection of the gods.

Verse 27 (shiva.shatarudra.22.27)

daityāḥ surākhyāṁ ramaṇīmīśvarājavimohitāḥ jagṛhuḥ sakalā vyāsa sarve dhanvantariṁ janāḥ

O Vyasa, the daityas, deluded by the Lord's own maya, seized the maiden called Sura; and all those people took Dhanvantari.

Verse 28 (shiva.shatarudra.22.28)

jagṛhurmunayaḥ sarve kāmadhenuṁ munīśvarāḥ sāmānyatastriyastāśca sthitā āsanvimohikāḥ

All the foremost sages took the wish-fulfilling cow; and those enchanting maidens remained there, held in common by all.

Verse 29 (shiva.shatarudra.22.29)

amṛtārthaṁ mahāyuddhaṁ sambabhūva jayaiṣiṇām surāṇāmasurāṇāṁ ca mithaḥ saṅkṣubdhacetasām

A great battle broke out between the gods and asuras, both seeking victory over the nectar, their minds mutually agitated.

Verse 30 (shiva.shatarudra.22.30)

hṛtaṁ somaṁ ca daiteyairbalāddevānvijitya ca baliprabhṛtibhirvyāsa yugāntāgnyarkasuprabhaiḥ

O Vyasa, the daityas headed by Bali, radiant as the fire and sun of cosmic dissolution, forcibly conquered the gods and seized the Soma nectar.

Verse 31 (shiva.shatarudra.22.31)

devāḥ śaṅkaramāpannā vihvalāḥ śivamāyayā sarve śakrādayastāta daiteyairarditā balāt

O child, the gods headed by Indra, forcibly oppressed by the daityas, distraught and bewildered by Shiva's own maya, took refuge in Shankara.

Verse 32 (shiva.shatarudra.22.32)

tatastadamṛtaṁ yatnātstrīsvarūpeṇa māyayā śivājñayā rameśena daityebhyaśca hṛtaṁ mune

O sage, then, at Shiva's command, Vishnu (Ramesha), assuming a woman's form through maya, by careful effort took that nectar back from the daityas.

Verse 33 (shiva.shatarudra.22.33)

apāyayatsurāṁstāṁśca mohinī strīsvarūpadhṛk mohayitvāsurānsarvānharirmāyāvināṁ varaḥ

Hari, foremost among masters of maya, having assumed the enchanting Mohini form and deluded all the asuras, gave that nectar to the gods to drink.

Verse 34 (shiva.shatarudra.22.34)

gatvā nikaṭametasyā ūcire daityapuṅgavāḥ pāyayasva sudhāmetāṁ mābhūdbhedo'tra paṅktiṣu

The foremost of the daityas, going near her, said: "Give this nectar to us too — let there be no discrimination in this line."

Verse 35 (shiva.shatarudra.22.35)

etaduktvā dadustasmai viṣṇave chalarūpiṇe te daityā dānavāḥ sarve śivamāyāvimohitāḥ

Having said this, all those daityas and danavas, deluded by Shiva's own maya, handed the nectar over to Vishnu in that deceptive disguise.

Verse 36 (shiva.shatarudra.22.36)

etasminnantare dṛṣṭvā striyo dānavapuṅgavāḥ anayannamṛtodbhūtā yathāsthānaṁ yathāsukham

Meanwhile the foremost of the danavas, having seen those maidens born of the nectar, led them away each to his own place, as he pleased.

Verse 37 (shiva.shatarudra.22.37)

tāsāṁ purāṇi divyāni svargācchataguṇānyapi ghorairyantraiḥ suguptāni mayamāyākṛtāni ca

Their divine cities, a hundred times more splendid than heaven, guarded by fearsome mechanisms wrought through Maya's own artifice —

Verse 38 (shiva.shatarudra.22.38)

surakṣitāni sarvāṇi kṛtvā yuddhāya niryayuḥ aspṛṣṭavakṣaso daityāḥ kṛtvā samayameva hi

— having made all of these secure, the daityas set out for battle, having pledged that their chests would remain untouched by these women.

Verse 39 (shiva.shatarudra.22.39)

"If we are defeated by the gods, we shall not touch these women" — having said this, all those great heroic daityas made ready for battle.

Verse 40 (shiva.shatarudra.22.40)

siṁhanādaṁ tataścakruḥ śaṅkhāndadhmuḥ pṛthakpṛthak pūrayanta ivākāśaṁ tarpayanto balāhakān

Then they let out lion-roars and blew their conches separately, as if filling the sky and satisfying the storm-clouds.

Verse 41 (shiva.shatarudra.22.41)

yuddhaṁ babhūva devānāmasuraiḥ saha bhīkaram devāsurākhyamatulaṁ prasiddhaṁ bhuvanatraye

A terrible battle took place between the gods and the asuras, incomparable, renowned throughout the three worlds as the Deva-Asura war.

Verse 42 (shiva.shatarudra.22.42)

jayaṁ prāpuḥ surāḥ sarve viṣṇunā parirakṣitāḥ daityāḥ palāyitāstatra hatāḥ sāmaraviṣṇunā

All the gods, protected by Vishnu, obtained victory; the daityas fled from there, slain by Vishnu together with the gods.

Verse 43 (shiva.shatarudra.22.43)

daityāḥ sammohitā devairviṣṇunā ca mahātmanā hatāvaśiṣṭāḥ pātālaṁ viviśurvivarāṇi ca

Of the daityas bewildered by the gods and the great-souled Vishnu, those who survived the slaughter entered the netherworld and its caverns.

Verse 44 (shiva.shatarudra.22.44)

anuvavrāja tānviṣṇuścakrapāṇirmahābalaḥ pātālaṁ paramaṁ gatvā saṁsthitānbhītabhītavat

Vishnu, the mighty discus-bearer, following after them down to the depths of Patala, found them stationed there in utter terror.

Verse 45 (shiva.shatarudra.22.45)

etasminnantare viṣṇurdadarśāmṛtasambhavāḥ kāntāḥ pūrṇenduvadanā divyalāvaṇyagarvitāḥ

Meanwhile Vishnu beheld those maidens born of the nectar, their faces like the full moon, proud of their divine beauty.

Verse 46 (shiva.shatarudra.22.46)

sammohitaḥ kāmabāṇairlebhe tatraiva nirvṛtim tābhiśca varanārībhiḥ krīḍamāno babhūva ha

Overcome by the arrows of desire, he found delight right there, and began to sport with those excellent women.

Verse 47 (shiva.shatarudra.22.47)

tābhyaḥ putrānajanayadviṣṇurvaraparākramān mahīṁ sarvāṁ kampayanto nānāyuddhaviśāradān

Vishnu begot upon them sons of excellent might, skilled in manifold warfare, who set the whole earth trembling.

Verse 48 (shiva.shatarudra.22.48)

tato vai hariputrāste mahābalaparākramāḥ mahopadravamāceruḥ svarge bhuvi ca duḥkhadam

Then those sons of Hari, of immense strength and valor, began wreaking great and grievous havoc in both heaven and earth.

Verse 49 (shiva.shatarudra.22.49)

lokopadravamālakṣya nirjarā munayo'tha vai cakrurnivedananaṁ teṣāṁ brahmaṇe praṇipatya ca

Beholding this havoc in the world, the gods and sages, bowing at Brahma's feet, made their report of it to him.

Verse 50 (shiva.shatarudra.22.50)

tacchrutvādāya tānbrahmā yayau kailāsaparvatam tatra dṛṣṭvā śivaṁ devaṁ praṇanāma punaḥ punaḥ

Hearing this, Brahma, taking them along, went to Mount Kailasa; seeing the god Shiva there, he bowed to him again and again.

Verse 51 (shiva.shatarudra.22.51)

tuṣṭāva vividhaiḥ stotrairnataskandhaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ jaya deva mahādeva sarvasvāminniti bruvan

With bowed shoulders and joined hands, he praised him with various hymns, saying: "Victory to you, O God, Great God, Lord of all!"

Verse 52 (shiva.shatarudra.22.52)

brahmovāca devadeva mahādeva lokān rakṣākhilānprabho upadrutānviṣṇuputraiḥ pātālasthairvikāribhiḥ

Brahma said: O God of gods, Great God, O Lord, protect all the worlds afflicted by the wicked sons of Vishnu who dwell in Patala.

Verse 53 (shiva.shatarudra.22.53)

nārīṣvamṛtabhūtāsu saṁsaktātmā harirvibho pātāle tiṣṭhatīdānīṁ ramate hi vikāravān

O Lord, Hari, his mind attached to those women born of the nectar, is now dwelling in Patala itself, overcome by passion, and sporting there.

Verse 54 (shiva.shatarudra.22.54)

nandīśvara uvāca itthaṁ bahustutaḥ śambhurbrahmaṇā sarṣinirjaraiḥ lokasaṁrakṣaṇārthāya viṣṇorānayanāya ca

Nandishvara said: Thus greatly praised by Brahma together with the sages and gods, for the sake of protecting the worlds and bringing Vishnu back,

Verse 55 (shiva.shatarudra.22.55)

tataḥ sa bhagavān śambhuḥ kṛpāsindhurmaheśvaraḥ tadupadravamājñāya vṛṣarūpo babhūva ha

then that blessed Shambhu, the great Lord, the ocean of compassion, learning of that havoc, took on the form of a bull.
