śakra uvāca tvaṣṭrā viprakṛtāḥ sarve vayaṁ devāstatharṣayaḥ śaraṇyaṁ tvāṁ mahāśaivaṁ dātāraṁ śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ

Indra said: O Brahmin, we, the gods and the sages too, all afflicted by Tvashta, have come for refuge to you, giver of refuge, great devotee of Shiva, bestower of gifts.

Verse 24 (shiva.shatarudra.24.24)

svāsthīni dehi no vipra mahāvajramayāni hi asthnā te svapaviṁ kṛtvā haniṣyāmi suradruham

O Brahmin, give us your bones, hard as the thunderbolt; making my own weapon from them, I shall slay the enemy of the gods.

Verse 25 (shiva.shatarudra.24.25)

Verse 28 (shiva.shatarudra.24.28)

viśvakarmā tadājñaptaścaklṛpe'strāṇi kṛtsnaśaḥ tadasthibhirvajramayaiḥ sudṛḍhaiḥ śivavarcasā

tamindro vajramudyamya varddhitaḥ śivavarcasā vṛtramabhyadravatkruddho mune rudra ivāntakam

O sage, Indra, empowered by Shiva's splendor, raising that thunderbolt in fury, charged at Vritra as Rudra might charge at Death.

Verse 31 (shiva.shatarudra.24.31)

tataḥ śakraḥ susannaddhastena vajreṇa sa drutam uccakarta śiro vārtraṁ giriśṛṅgamivaujasā

Then Shakra, well armed, with that thunderbolt, by his own might, severed Vritra's head as one might sever a mountain peak.

Verse 32 (shiva.shatarudra.24.32)

iti te kathitaṁ tāta prasaṅgāccaritaṁ tvidam pippalādāvatāraṁ me śṛṇu śambhormahādarāt

O child, thus has this story been told to you in passing; now hear from me, with great reverence, of Shambhu's incarnation as Pippalada.

Verse 34 (shiva.shatarudra.24.34)

O best of sages, she came there again, and, seeing much that was unbecoming and seeing those gods, Suvarcha was greatly astonished.

Verse 37 (shiva.shatarudra.24.37)

jñātvā ca tatsarvamidaṁ surāṇāṁ kṛtyaṁ tadānīṁ ca cukopa sādhvī dadau tadā śāpamatīva ruṣṭā teṣāṁ suvarcā ṛṣivaryabhāryā

Understanding all that deed of the gods, that virtuous woman grew greatly angry, and, exceedingly wrathful, Suvarcha, wife of that excellent sage, pronounced upon them a curse.

Verse 38 (shiva.shatarudra.24.38)

suvarcovāca aho surā druṣṭatarāśca sarve svakāryadakṣā hyabudhāśca lubdhāḥ tasmācca sarve paśavo bhavantu sendrāśca me'dyaprabhṛtītyuvāca

Suvarcha said: Alas, all these gods are exceedingly wicked, skilled only at their own purposes, unwise, and greedy; therefore let them all, together with Indra, become beasts from this day forward.

Verse 39 (shiva.shatarudra.24.39)

evaṁ śāpaṁ dadau teṣāṁ surāṇāṁ sā tapasvinī saśakrāṇāṁ ca sarveṣāṁ suvarcā munikāminī

Thus did that ascetic woman, the sage's beloved wife Suvarcha, pronounce this curse upon all the gods together with Indra.

anugantuṁ paterlokamathecchatsā pativratā citāṁ cakre samedhobhiḥ supavitrairmanasvinī

Then that devoted wife, wishing to go to her husband's world, began to build a funeral pyre with pure sacrificial wood.

Verse 41 (shiva.shatarudra.24.41)

tato nabhogirā prāha suvarcāṁ tāṁ munipriyām āśvāsayantī giriśapreritā sukhadāyinī

Then a voice from the sky, sent by Girisha, the giver of happiness, spoke, consoling that beloved wife of the sage —

Verse 42 (shiva.shatarudra.24.42)

ākāśavāṇyuvāca sāhasaṁ na kuru prājñe śṛṇu me paramaṁ vacaḥ munitejastvadudare tadutpādaya yatnataḥ

The voice from the sky said: O wise one, do not act rashly; hear my supreme word — bring forth the sage's radiant seed in your womb, with careful effort.

Verse 43 (shiva.shatarudra.24.43)

tataḥ svābhīṣṭacaraṇaṁ devi kartuṁ tvamarhasi sagarbhā na dahed gātramiti brahmanideśanam

Then, O goddess, you may rightly do as you wish; but being pregnant, do not burn your body — this is Brahma's instruction.

Verse 44 (shiva.shatarudra.24.44)

Nandishvara said: O lord of sages, having said this, the voice from the sky fell silent; hearing it, the sage's wife was astonished for a moment.

Verse 45 (shiva.shatarudra.24.45)

suvarcā sā mahāsādhvī patilokamabhīpsatī upaviśyāśmanā bhūyaḥ sodaraṁ vidadāra ha

Yet, still longing for her husband's world, that greatly virtuous Suvarcha sat down again and tore open her own womb with a stone.

Verse 46 (shiva.shatarudra.24.46)

sākṣād rudrāvatāro'sau dadhīcivaratejasaḥ prādurbhūtaḥ svayaṁ tāta svalīlākaraṇe kṣamaḥ

O child, he was none other than an incarnation of Rudra himself, born of Dadhichi's excellent splendor, capable of performing his own divine sports.

Verse 48 (shiva.shatarudra.24.48)

taṁ dṛṣṭvā svasutaṁ divyaṁ svarūpaṁ munikāminī suvarcājñāya manasā sākṣād rudrāvatārakam

Beholding that divine son of hers, the sage's beloved Suvarcha recognized in her mind that he was, in truth, an incarnation of Rudra.

Verse 49 (shiva.shatarudra.24.49)

The mother Suvarcha, her eyes clear, smiling, still longing for her husband's world, spoke to her son with great love.

Verse 51 (shiva.shatarudra.24.51)

tadotsavo mahānāsīddevānāṁ munisattama nedurdundubhayastatra nartakyo nanṛturmudā

O best of sages, then there was a great celebration among the gods; kettledrums resounded there, and dancing girls danced with joy.

Verse 59 (shiva.shatarudra.24.59)

jagurgandharvaputrāśca kinnarā vādyavādakāḥ vādayāmāsuramarāḥ puṣpavṛṣṭiṁ ca cakrire

The sons of the Gandharvas and the Kinnaras sang, the musicians played their instruments, the gods sounded their music, and flowers rained down.

Verse 60 (shiva.shatarudra.24.60)

dadhīceḥ pippalapiturvilasantaṁ sutaṁ ca tam saṁskṛtya vidhivatsarve viṣṇvādyāstuṣṭuvuḥ punaḥ

Having duly performed the rites for that radiant son of Dadhichi, who came to dwell beside the Pippala tree, Vishnu and all the others again praised him.

Verse 61 (shiva.shatarudra.24.61)

pippalādeti tannāma cakre brahmā prasannadhīḥ prasanno bhava deveśa ityūce hariṇā suraiḥ

Brahma, his mind well pleased, gave him the name Pippalada; and together with Hari and the gods, he said, "O Lord of gods, be gracious."

Verse 62 (shiva.shatarudra.24.62)

ityuktvā tamanujñāya brahmā viṣṇuḥ surāstathā svaṁ svaṁ dhāma yayuḥ sarve vidhāya ca mahotsavam

Having said this, and taken his leave, Brahma, Vishnu, and the gods, having held a great celebration, all went each to his own abode.

Verse 63 (shiva.shatarudra.24.63)

atha rudraḥ pippalādo'śvatthamūle mahāprabhuḥ tatāpa suciraṁ kālaṁ lokānāṁ hitakāmyayā

Then that Rudra, the great Lord Pippalada, at the foot of the Ashvattha tree, performed austerity for a very long time, desiring the welfare of the worlds.

Verse 64 (shiva.shatarudra.24.64)

itthaṁ sutapatastasya pippalādasya sammukhe mahākālo vyatīyāya lokacaryānusāriṇaḥ

Thus, before that Pippalada as he performed great austerity, following the ways of the world, a vast span of time passed.
