The Krishnadarshana Incarnation: Nabhaga's Portion

Verse 1 (shiva.shatarudra.29.1)

नन्दीश्वर उवाच । सनत्कुमार शम्भोस्त्ववतारं परमं शृणु । नभगज्ञानदं कृष्णदर्शनाह्वयमुत्तमम्

nandīśvara uvāca sanatkumāra śambhostvavatāraṁ paramaṁ śṛṇu nabhagajñānadaṁ kṛṣṇadarśanāhvayamuttamam

Nandishvara said: O Sanatkumara, hear the supreme incarnation of Shambhu — the excellent one called Krishnadarshana, the giver of knowledge to Nabhaga.

Verse 2 (shiva.shatarudra.29.2)

इक्ष्वाकुप्रमुखा आसन् श्राद्धदेवसुताश्च ये । नभगस्तत्र नवमो नाभागस्तत्सुतः स्मृतः

ikṣvākupramukhā āsan śrāddhadevasutāśca ye nabhagastatra navamo nābhāgastatsutaḥ smṛtaḥ

Ikshvaku and the others were the sons of Shraddhadeva, that is Manu; among them Nabhaga was the ninth, and his own son is likewise remembered as Nabhaga.

Verse 3 (shiva.shatarudra.29.3)

अम्बरीषः सुतस्तस्य विष्णुभक्तो बभूव सः । यस्योपरि प्रसन्नोऽभूद्दुर्वासा ब्रह्मभक्तितः

ambarīṣaḥ sutastasya viṣṇubhakto babhūva saḥ yasyopari prasanno'bhūddurvāsā brahmabhaktitaḥ

His son Ambarisha became a devotee of Vishnu, with whom Durvasa, through his own devotion to Brahman, became pleased.

Verse 4 (shiva.shatarudra.29.4)

पितामहोऽम्बरीषस्य नभगो यः प्रकीर्तितः । तच्चरितं शृणु मुने यस्मै ज्ञानमदाच्छिवः

pitāmaho'mbarīṣasya nabhago yaḥ prakīrtitaḥ taccaritaṁ śṛṇu mune yasmai jñānamadācchivaḥ

That Nabhaga celebrated as the grandfather of Ambarisha — hear, O sage, his story, to whom Shiva gave true knowledge.

Verse 5 (shiva.shatarudra.29.5)

नभगो मनुपुत्रस्तु पठनार्थं सुबुद्धिमान् । चक्रे गुरुकुले वासं बहुकालं जितेन्द्रियः

nabhago manuputrastu paṭhanārthaṁ subuddhimān cakre gurukule vāsaṁ bahukālaṁ jitendriyaḥ

Nabhaga, the son of Manu, of excellent intellect and mastery over his senses, dwelt for a long time in his teacher's household for the sake of study.

Verse 6 (shiva.shatarudra.29.6)

एतस्मिन्समये ते वै इक्ष्वाकुप्रमुखाः सुताः । तस्मै भागमकल्प्यैव भेजुर्भागान्निजान्क्रमात्

etasminsamaye te vai ikṣvākupramukhāḥ sutāḥ tasmai bhāgamakalpyaiva bhejurbhāgānnijānkramāt

During this time, those brothers headed by Ikshvaku, without setting aside any portion for him, divided their own shares among themselves in due order.

Verse 7 (shiva.shatarudra.29.7)

स्वं स्वं भागं गृहीत्वा ते बुभुजू राज्यमुत्तमम् । अविषादं महाभागाः पित्रादेशात्सुबुद्धयः

svaṁ svaṁ bhāgaṁ gṛhītvā te bubhujū rājyamuttamam aviṣādaṁ mahābhāgāḥ pitrādeśātsubuddhayaḥ

Taking each his own share, those fortunate and wise brothers, at their father's command, enjoyed the excellent kingdom without any distress.

Verse 8 (shiva.shatarudra.29.8)

स पश्चादागतस्तत्र ब्रह्मचारी गुरुस्थलात् । नभगोऽधीत्य सर्वाश्च साङ्गोपाङ्गाः श्रुतीः क्रमात्

sa paścādāgatastatra brahmacārī gurusthalāt nabhago'dhītya sarvāśca sāṅgopāṅgāḥ śrutīḥ kramāt

Afterward Nabhaga, the celibate student, having studied all the Vedas together with their branches and limbs in due order, returned there from his teacher's abode.

Verse 9 (shiva.shatarudra.29.9)

भ्रातृन्विलोक्य नभगो विभक्तान्सकलान्निजान् । दायार्थी प्राह तान्स्नेहादिक्ष्वाकुप्रमुखान्मुने

bhrātṛnvilokya nabhago vibhaktānsakalānnijān dāyārthī prāha tānsnehādikṣvākupramukhānmune

O sage, seeing all his brothers, headed by Ikshvaku, having already divided the inheritance, Nabhaga, seeking his own share, spoke to them affectionately.

Verse 10 (shiva.shatarudra.29.10)

नभग उवाच । भ्रातरोऽभक्तकं मह्यं दायं कृत्वा यथातथम् । सर्वे विभक्ताः सुप्रीत्या स्वदायार्थागताय च

nabhaga uvāca bhrātaro'bhaktakaṁ mahyaṁ dāyaṁ kṛtvā yathātatham sarve vibhaktāḥ suprītyā svadāyārthāgatāya ca

Nabhaga said: "O brothers, having somehow divided the inheritance without giving me any share, you have all happily done so, even though I have now come for my share."

Verse 11 (shiva.shatarudra.29.11)

तदा विस्मृतमस्माभिरिदानीं पितरं तव । विभजामो वयं भागं तं गृहाण न संशयः

tadā vismṛtamasmābhiridānīṁ pitaraṁ tava vibhajāmo vayaṁ bhāgaṁ taṁ gṛhāṇa na saṁśayaḥ

"We had indeed forgotten you at that time. Now we shall set aside our father's remaining share for you — take it, without any doubt."

Verse 12 (shiva.shatarudra.29.12)

तच्छुत्वा भ्रातृवचनं नभगः परविस्मृतः । तदोपकण्ठमागत्य पितरं समभाषत

tacchutvā bhrātṛvacanaṁ nabhagaḥ paravismṛtaḥ tadopakaṇṭhamāgatya pitaraṁ samabhāṣata

Hearing his brothers' words and feeling himself forgotten by the others, Nabhaga then went to his father's side and spoke to him.

Verse 13 (shiva.shatarudra.29.13)

नभग उवाच । हे तात भ्रातरः सर्वे त्यक्त्वा मां न्यभजंश्च ते । पठनार्थं गतश्चाहं ब्रह्मचारी गुरोः कुले

nabhaga uvāca he tāta bhrātaraḥ sarve tyaktvā māṁ nyabhajaṁśca te paṭhanārthaṁ gataścāhaṁ brahmacārī guroḥ kule

Nabhaga said: "O father, all my brothers divided the inheritance, leaving me out, while I had gone as a celibate student to my teacher's household for study."

Verse 14 (shiva.shatarudra.29.14)

तत आगत्य मे पृष्टा दायदानार्थमादरात् । ते त्वामूचुर्विभागं मे तदर्थमहमागतः

tata āgatya me pṛṣṭā dāyadānārthamādarāt te tvāmūcurvibhāgaṁ me tadarthamahamāgataḥ

"Having come back, I respectfully asked them for my share; they told me to ask you for my portion — for this reason I have come."

Verse 15 (shiva.shatarudra.29.15)

नन्दीश्वर उवाच । तदाकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य पिता तं प्राह विस्मितः । आश्वास्य श्राद्धदेवः स सत्यधर्मरतं मुने

nandīśvara uvāca tadākarṇya vacastasya pitā taṁ prāha vismitaḥ āśvāsya śrāddhadevaḥ sa satyadharmarataṁ mune

Nandishvara said: O sage, hearing his words, his father, astonished, comforted him — that Shraddhadeva devoted to true dharma — and spoke to him.

Verse 16 (shiva.shatarudra.29.16)

मनुरुवाच । तदुक्तं मादृथास्तात प्रतारणकरं हि तत् । न ह्यहं परमं दायं सर्वथा भोगसाधनम्

manuruvāca taduktaṁ mādṛthāstāta pratāraṇakaraṁ hi tat na hyahaṁ paramaṁ dāyaṁ sarvathā bhogasādhanam

Manu said: "O son, do not say that; what they said was indeed deceptive. I have no supreme inheritance left that could serve, in any way, as a means of enjoyment for you."

Verse 17 (shiva.shatarudra.29.17)

तथापि दायभावेन दत्तोऽहं तैः प्रतारिभिः । तव वै जीवनोपायं वदामि शृणु तत्त्वतः

tathāpi dāyabhāvena datto'haṁ taiḥ pratāribhiḥ tava vai jīvanopāyaṁ vadāmi śṛṇu tattvataḥ

"Nevertheless, since those deceivers have, in the guise of a division, given me over as your portion, I shall now tell you the true means of your livelihood — listen."

Verse 18 (shiva.shatarudra.29.18)

सत्रमाङ्गिरसा विप्राः कुर्वन्त्यद्य सुमेधसः । तत्र कर्मणि मुह्यन्ति षष्ठं षष्ठमहः प्रति

satramāṅgirasā viprāḥ kurvantyadya sumedhasaḥ tatra karmaṇi muhyanti ṣaṣṭhaṁ ṣaṣṭhamahaḥ prati

"Today the wise brahmins descended from Angiras are performing a sacrificial session; in that rite, on every sixth day, they grow confused."

Verse 19 (shiva.shatarudra.29.19)

तत्र त्वं गच्छ नभग तान् सुशंस महाकवे । सूक्ते द्वे वैश्वदेवे हि सत्रं शुद्धं हि तद्भवेत्

tatra tvaṁ gaccha nabhaga tān suśaṁsa mahākave sūkte dve vaiśvadeve hi satraṁ śuddhaṁ hi tadbhavet

"Go there, Nabhaga, O great poet, and recite well for them; with the two Vaishvadeva hymns, that sacrificial session will become properly purified."

Verse 20 (shiva.shatarudra.29.20)

तत्कर्मणि समाप्ते हि स्वर्यान्तो ब्राह्मणाश्च ते । धनं दास्यन्ति ते तुष्टाः स्वसत्रपरिशेषितम्

tatkarmaṇi samāpte hi svaryānto brāhmaṇāśca te dhanaṁ dāsyanti te tuṣṭāḥ svasatrapariśeṣitam

"When that rite is completed, those brahmins, on departing for heaven, being pleased, will give you the wealth left over from their sacrifice."

Verse 21 (shiva.shatarudra.29.21)

नन्दीश्वर उवाच । तदाकर्ण्य पितुर्वाक्यं नभगः सत्यसारवान् । जगाम तत्र सुप्रीत्या यत्र तत्सत्रमुत्तमम्

nandīśvara uvāca tadākarṇya piturvākyaṁ nabhagaḥ satyasāravān jagāma tatra suprītyā yatra tatsatramuttamam

Nandishvara said: Hearing his father's words, Nabhaga, whose essence was truth, went joyfully to the place where that excellent sacrificial session was being held.

Verse 22 (shiva.shatarudra.29.22)

तदाहः कर्मणि मुने सत्रे तस्मिन्स मानवः । सूक्ते द्वे वैश्वदेवे हि प्रोवाच स्पष्टतः सुधीः

tadāhaḥ karmaṇi mune satre tasminsa mānavaḥ sūkte dve vaiśvadeve hi provāca spaṣṭataḥ sudhīḥ

O sage, on the appointed day of that rite, in that sacrificial session, that wise son of Manu recited the two Vaishvadeva hymns clearly.

Verse 23 (shiva.shatarudra.29.23)

समाप्ते कर्मणि ततो विप्रा आङ्गिरसाश्च ते । तस्मै दत्त्वा ययुः स्वर्गं स्वं स्वं सत्रावशेषितम्

samāpte karmaṇi tato viprā āṅgirasāśca te tasmai dattvā yayuḥ svargaṁ svaṁ svaṁ satrāvaśeṣitam

Then, the rite completed, those Angirasa brahmins, having given him whatever remained from each of their portions of the sacrifice, departed to heaven.

Verse 24 (shiva.shatarudra.29.24)

तत्तदा स्वीकरिष्यन्तं सुसत्रपरिशेषितम् । विज्ञाय गिरिशः सद्य आविर्भूतः सदूतिकृत्

tattadā svīkariṣyantaṁ susatrapariśeṣitam vijñāya giriśaḥ sadya āvirbhūtaḥ sadūtikṛt

Then, knowing that he was about to take possession of that wealth left over from the sacrifice, Girisha appeared there at once, as if a messenger of that rule.

Verse 25 (shiva.shatarudra.29.25)

सर्वाङ्गसुन्दरः श्रीमान्पुरुषः कृष्णदर्शनः । भावं समीक्षितुं भागं दातुं ज्ञानं परं च तत्

sarvāṅgasundaraḥ śrīmānpuruṣaḥ kṛṣṇadarśanaḥ bhāvaṁ samīkṣituṁ bhāgaṁ dātuṁ jñānaṁ paraṁ ca tat

Beautiful in every limb, glorious, of dark countenance — he came to observe his true feeling, to grant him his portion, and to bestow that supreme knowledge.

Verse 26 (shiva.shatarudra.29.26)

अथो स शङ्करः शम्भुः परीक्षाकर ईश्वरः । उवाचोत्तरतोऽभ्येत्य नभगं तं हि मानवम्

atho sa śaṅkaraḥ śambhuḥ parīkṣākara īśvaraḥ uvācottarato'bhyetya nabhagaṁ taṁ hi mānavam

Then Shankara, Shambhu, the Lord who tests his devotees, having approached from the north, spoke to that son of Manu, Nabhaga.

Verse 27 (shiva.shatarudra.29.27)

ईश्वर उवाच । कस्त्वं गृह्णासि पुरुष ममेदं वास्तुकं वसु । प्रेषितः केन तत्सर्वं सत्यं वद ममाग्रतः

īśvara uvāca kastvaṁ gṛhṇāsi puruṣa mamedaṁ vāstukaṁ vasu preṣitaḥ kena tatsarvaṁ satyaṁ vada mamāgrataḥ

The Lord said: "Who are you, O man, taking this, my rightful wealth? By whom were you sent? Tell me all of it truthfully, before me."

Verse 28 (shiva.shatarudra.29.28)

नन्दीश्वर उवाच । तच्छ्रुत्वा तद्वचस्तात मानवो नभगः कविः । प्रत्युवाच विनीतात्मा पुरुषं कृष्णदर्शनम्

nandīśvara uvāca tacchrutvā tadvacastāta mānavo nabhagaḥ kaviḥ pratyuvāca vinītātmā puruṣaṁ kṛṣṇadarśanam

Nandishvara said: O son, hearing these words, that wise son of Manu, Nabhaga, humbly replied to the dark-complexioned person.

Verse 29 (shiva.shatarudra.29.29)

नभग उवाच । ममेदमृषिभिर्दत्तं वसु यज्ञगतं खलु । कथं वारयसे मां त्वं गृह्णतं कृष्णदर्शन

nabhaga uvāca mamedamṛṣibhirdattaṁ vasu yajñagataṁ khalu kathaṁ vārayase māṁ tvaṁ gṛhṇataṁ kṛṣṇadarśana

Nabhaga said: "This wealth, connected with the sacrifice, was given to me by the sages. How is it, O Krishnadarshana, that you forbid me from taking it?"

Verse 30 (shiva.shatarudra.29.30)

नन्दीश्वर उवाच । आकर्ण्य नाभगं वाक्यमिदं सत्यमुदीरितम् । प्रत्युवाच प्रसन्नात्मा पुरुषः कृष्णदर्शनः

nandīśvara uvāca ākarṇya nābhagaṁ vākyamidaṁ satyamudīritam pratyuvāca prasannātmā puruṣaḥ kṛṣṇadarśanaḥ

Nandishvara said: Hearing Nabhaga's truthful words thus spoken, the person Krishnadarshana, his heart well pleased, replied.

Verse 31 (shiva.shatarudra.29.31)

कृष्णदर्शन उवाच । विवादेऽस्मिन्हि नौ तात प्रमाणं जनकस्तव । याहि तं पृच्छ स ब्रूयात्तत्प्रमाणं तु सत्यतः

kṛṣṇadarśana uvāca vivāde'sminhi nau tāta pramāṇaṁ janakastava yāhi taṁ pṛccha sa brūyāttatpramāṇaṁ tu satyataḥ

Krishnadarshana said: "O son, in this dispute between us, let your father be the authority. Go, ask him; he will truly declare what the authority is in this matter."

Verse 32 (shiva.shatarudra.29.32)

नन्दीश्वर उवाच । तदाकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य नभगो मानवः कविः । आगच्छत्पितरं प्रीत्या तदुक्तं पृष्टवान्मुने

nandīśvara uvāca tadākarṇya vacastasya nabhago mānavaḥ kaviḥ āgacchatpitaraṁ prītyā taduktaṁ pṛṣṭavānmune

Nandishvara said: O sage, hearing his words, the wise Nabhaga went joyfully to his father and asked him what had been said.

Verse 33 (shiva.shatarudra.29.33)

पुत्रोदितं समाकर्ण्य श्राद्धदेवः स वै मनुः । स्मृत्वा शिवपदाम्भोजं प्राप्तस्मृतिरुवाच तम्

putroditaṁ samākarṇya śrāddhadevaḥ sa vai manuḥ smṛtvā śivapadāmbhojaṁ prāptasmṛtiruvāca tam

Hearing what his son related, Shraddhadeva, that Manu, remembering the lotus feet of Shiva and thereby regaining true recollection, spoke to him.

Verse 34 (shiva.shatarudra.29.34)

मनुरुवाच । हे तात शृणु मद्वाक्यं स देवः पुरुषः शिवः । तस्यैव सकलं वस्तु यज्ञप्राप्तं विशेषतः

manuruvāca he tāta śṛṇu madvākyaṁ sa devaḥ puruṣaḥ śivaḥ tasyaiva sakalaṁ vastu yajñaprāptaṁ viśeṣataḥ

Manu said: "O son, hear my words. That person is the God Shiva himself; all wealth obtained from a sacrifice belongs especially to him."

Verse 35 (shiva.shatarudra.29.35)

अध्वरोर्वरितं वस्तु रुद्रभागः प्रकीर्तितः । इत्यपि प्राज्ञवादो हि क्वचिज्जातस्तदिच्छया

adhvarorvaritaṁ vastu rudrabhāgaḥ prakīrtitaḥ ityapi prājñavādo hi kvacijjātastadicchayā

"What is left over from a sacrificial rite is proclaimed to be Rudra's own portion — this too is the declaration of the wise, arisen in accordance with his will."

Verse 36 (shiva.shatarudra.29.36)

स देव ईश्वरः सर्वं वस्त्वर्हति न संशयः । यज्ञावशिष्टं किमुत परे तस्येच्छया विभोः

sa deva īśvaraḥ sarvaṁ vastvarhati na saṁśayaḥ yajñāvaśiṣṭaṁ kimuta pare tasyecchayā vibhoḥ

"That God, the Lord, without doubt deserves all wealth; how much more the remainder of a sacrifice, which exists at all only by that Lord's own will."

Verse 37 (shiva.shatarudra.29.37)

अनुग्रहार्थमायातस्तव तद्रूपतः प्रभुः । तत्र त्वं गच्छ नभग प्रसन्नं कुरु सत्यतः

anugrahārthamāyātastava tadrūpataḥ prabhuḥ tatra tvaṁ gaccha nabhaga prasannaṁ kuru satyataḥ

"That Lord has come in that very form for the sake of blessing you. Go there, Nabhaga, and truly make him pleased."

Verse 38 (shiva.shatarudra.29.38)

क्षमापय स्वापराधं सुप्रणम्य स्तुतिं कुरु । सर्वप्रभुः स एवेशो यज्ञाधीशोऽखिलेश्वरः

kṣamāpaya svāparādhaṁ supraṇamya stutiṁ kuru sarvaprabhuḥ sa eveśo yajñādhīśo'khileśvaraḥ

"Beg forgiveness for your fault; bow low and offer him praise. He alone is the Lord of all, the master of sacrifice, the Lord of everything."

Verse 39 (shiva.shatarudra.29.39)

विष्णुब्रह्मादयो देवाः सिद्धाः सर्वर्षयोऽपि हि । तदनुग्रहतस्तात समर्थाः सर्वकर्मणि

viṣṇubrahmādayo devāḥ siddhāḥ sarvarṣayo'pi hi tadanugrahatastāta samarthāḥ sarvakarmaṇi

"O son, Vishnu, Brahma, and the other gods, the Siddhas, and all the sages too, are capable in every action only through his grace."

Verse 40 (shiva.shatarudra.29.40)

किम्बहूक्त्यात्मजश्रेष्ठ गच्छ तत्राशु माचिरम् । प्रसादय महादेवं सर्वथा सकलेश्वरम्

kimbahūktyātmajaśreṣṭha gaccha tatrāśu māciram prasādaya mahādevaṁ sarvathā sakaleśvaram

"What need for many words, O best of sons? Go there quickly, without delay, and propitiate Mahadeva, the Lord of all in every way."

Verse 41 (shiva.shatarudra.29.41)

नन्दीश्वर उवाच । इत्युक्त्वा स मनुः श्राद्धदेवश्च तनयं द्रुतम् । प्रेषयामास निकटं शम्भोः सोऽपि समेत्य तम्

nandīśvara uvāca ityuktvā sa manuḥ śrāddhadevaśca tanayaṁ drutam preṣayāmāsa nikaṭaṁ śambhoḥ so'pi sametya tam

Nandishvara said: Having said this, Manu Shraddhadeva quickly sent his son to Shambhu's presence, and he too went and approached him.

Verse 42 (shiva.shatarudra.29.42)

नभगश्च प्रणम्याशु साञ्जलिर्नतमस्तकः । प्रोवाच सुप्रसन्नात्मा विनयेन महामतिः

nabhagaśca praṇamyāśu sāñjalirnatamastakaḥ provāca suprasannātmā vinayena mahāmatiḥ

Nabhaga, bowing at once with joined hands and lowered head, his heart well pleased, spoke with humility, being of great wisdom.

Verse 43 (shiva.shatarudra.29.43)

नभग उवाच । इदं तवेश सर्वं हि वस्तु त्रिभुवने हि यत् । इत्याह मे पिता नूनं किमुताध्वरशेषितम्

nabhaga uvāca idaṁ taveśa sarvaṁ hi vastu tribhuvane hi yat ityāha me pitā nūnaṁ kimutādhvaraśeṣitam

Nabhaga said: "O Lord, all wealth whatsoever in the three worlds is indeed yours — so my father has surely told me; how much more, then, the remainder of a sacrifice!"

Verse 44 (shiva.shatarudra.29.44)

अजानता मया नाथ यदुक्तं तद्वचो भ्रमात् । अपराधं त्वं क्षमस्व शिरसा त्वां प्रसादये

ajānatā mayā nātha yaduktaṁ tadvaco bhramāt aparādhaṁ tvaṁ kṣamasva śirasā tvāṁ prasādaye

"O Lord, whatever I said, not knowing, was spoken out of delusion. Forgive my fault; with bowed head I seek to please you."

Verse 45 (shiva.shatarudra.29.45)

इत्युक्त्वा नभगः सोऽतिदीनधीस्तु कृताञ्जलिः । तुष्टाव तं महेशानं कृष्णदर्शनमानतः

ityuktvā nabhagaḥ so'tidīnadhīstu kṛtāñjaliḥ tuṣṭāva taṁ maheśānaṁ kṛṣṇadarśanamānataḥ

Having said this, Nabhaga, his mind exceedingly humbled, with joined hands and bowed low, praised that great Lord Krishnadarshana.

Verse 46 (shiva.shatarudra.29.46)

श्राद्धदेवोऽपि शुद्धात्मा नतकः साञ्जलिः सुधीः । तुष्टाव तं प्रभुं नत्वा स्वापराधं क्षमापयन्

śrāddhadevo'pi śuddhātmā natakaḥ sāñjaliḥ sudhīḥ tuṣṭāva taṁ prabhuṁ natvā svāparādhaṁ kṣamāpayan

Shraddhadeva too, his heart pure and wise, bowed low with joined hands, praised that Lord, and, bowing to him, asked forgiveness for his own fault.

Verse 47 (shiva.shatarudra.29.47)

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र विष्णुब्रह्मादयः सुराः । वासवाद्याः समाजग्मुः सिद्धाश्च मुनयोऽपि हि

etasminnantare tatra viṣṇubrahmādayaḥ surāḥ vāsavādyāḥ samājagmuḥ siddhāśca munayo'pi hi

Meanwhile, there arrived Vishnu, Brahma, and the other gods, Indra and the rest, the Siddhas, and the sages as well.

Verse 48 (shiva.shatarudra.29.48)

महोत्सवं प्रकुर्वन्तः सुकृताञ्जलयोऽखिलाः । तुष्टुवुर्नतका भक्त्या सुप्रणम्य पृथक्पृथक्

mahotsavaṁ prakurvantaḥ sukṛtāñjalayo'khilāḥ tuṣṭuvurnatakā bhaktyā supraṇamya pṛthakpṛthak

Making a great festival, all of them, with hands duly joined, bowing low with devotion, praised him, each in his own manner.

Verse 49 (shiva.shatarudra.29.49)

अथ रुद्रः प्रसन्नात्मा कृपादृष्ट्या विलोक्य तान् । उवाच नभगं प्रीत्या सस्मितं कृष्णदर्शनः

atha rudraḥ prasannātmā kṛpādṛṣṭyā vilokya tān uvāca nabhagaṁ prītyā sasmitaṁ kṛṣṇadarśanaḥ

Then Rudra, his heart pleased, looking upon them all with a glance of compassion, Krishnadarshana spoke to Nabhaga lovingly, with a smile.

Verse 50 (shiva.shatarudra.29.50)

कृष्णदर्शन उवाच । यत्ते पितावदद्धर्म्यं वाक्यं तत्तु तथैव हि । त्वयापि सत्यमुक्तं तत् साधुस्त्वं नात्र संशयः

kṛṣṇadarśana uvāca yatte pitāvadaddharmyaṁ vākyaṁ tattu tathaiva hi tvayāpi satyamuktaṁ tat sādhustvaṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ

Krishnadarshana said: "What your father told you, that righteous word, is indeed exactly so; and what you spoke was true as well. You are virtuous — there is no doubt of this."

Verse 51 (shiva.shatarudra.29.51)

अतोऽहं सुप्रसन्नोऽस्मि सर्वथा सुव्रतेन ते । ददामि कृपया ते हि ज्ञानं ब्रह्म सनातनम्

ato'haṁ suprasanno'smi sarvathā suvratena te dadāmi kṛpayā te hi jñānaṁ brahma sanātanam

"Therefore I am altogether well pleased by your excellent conduct. Out of my grace, I now give you the eternal knowledge of Brahman."

Verse 52 (shiva.shatarudra.29.52)

महाज्ञानी भव त्वं हि सविप्रो नभगं द्रुतम् । गृहाण वस्त्विदं सर्वं मद्दत्तं कृपयाधुना

mahājñānī bhava tvaṁ hi savipro nabhagaṁ drutam gṛhāṇa vastvidaṁ sarvaṁ maddattaṁ kṛpayādhunā

"Become, O Nabhaga, a man of great knowledge together with the brahmins; and now take all this wealth as well, given to you by me out of grace."

Verse 53 (shiva.shatarudra.29.53)

इह सर्वसुखं भुङ्क्ष्व निर्विकारं महामते । सुगतिं प्राप्स्यसि त्वं हि सविप्रः कृपया मम

iha sarvasukhaṁ bhuṅkṣva nirvikāraṁ mahāmate sugatiṁ prāpsyasi tvaṁ hi savipraḥ kṛpayā mama

"Enjoy all happiness here, undisturbed in mind, O wise one; and by my grace, together with the brahmins, you shall attain the highest goal."

Verse 54 (shiva.shatarudra.29.54)

नन्दीश्वर उवाच । इत्युक्त्वा तात भगवान्स रुद्रः सत्यवत्सलः । सर्वेषां पश्यतां तेषां तत्रैवान्तर्दधे हरः

nandīśvara uvāca ityuktvā tāta bhagavānsa rudraḥ satyavatsalaḥ sarveṣāṁ paśyatāṁ teṣāṁ tatraivāntardadhe haraḥ

Nandishvara said: O son, having said this, the blessed Rudra, cherishing truth, vanished right there before the eyes of all of them.

Verse 55 (shiva.shatarudra.29.55)

विष्णुर्ब्रह्मापि देवाद्याः सर्वे ते मुनिसत्तम । स्वं स्वं धाम ययुः प्रीत्या तस्यै नत्वा दिशे मुदा

viṣṇurbrahmāpi devādyāḥ sarve te munisattama svaṁ svaṁ dhāma yayuḥ prītyā tasyai natvā diśe mudā

O foremost of sages, Vishnu, Brahma, and all the other gods, having bowed joyfully in that direction, went each to his own abode.

Verse 56 (shiva.shatarudra.29.56)

सपुत्रः श्राद्धदेवोऽपि स्वस्थानमगमन्मुदा । भुक्त्वा भोगान्सुविपुलान्सोऽन्ते शिवपुरं ययौ

saputraḥ śrāddhadevo'pi svasthānamagamanmudā bhuktvā bhogānsuvipulānso'nte śivapuraṁ yayau

Shraddhadeva too, together with his son, joyfully returned to his own abode; and having enjoyed vast pleasures, he in the end went to the city of Shiva.

Verse 57 (shiva.shatarudra.29.57)

इत्थं ते कीर्तितो ब्रह्मन्नवतारः शिवस्य हि । कृष्णदर्शननामा वै नभगानन्ददायकः

itthaṁ te kīrtito brahmannavatāraḥ śivasya hi kṛṣṇadarśananāmā vai nabhagānandadāyakaḥ

Thus, O brahmin, has this incarnation of Shiva, named Krishnadarshana, the bestower of joy upon Nabhaga, been told to you.

Verse 58 (shiva.shatarudra.29.58)

इदमाख्यानमनघं भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदं सताम् । पठतां शृण्वतां वापि सर्वकामफलप्रदम्

idamākhyānamanaghaṁ bhuktimuktipradaṁ satām paṭhatāṁ śṛṇvatāṁ vāpi sarvakāmaphalapradam

This sinless account bestows both enjoyment and liberation upon the virtuous; to those who read or hear it, it grants the fruit of every desire.

Verse 59 (shiva.shatarudra.29.59)

य एतच्चरितं प्रातः सायं च स्मरते सुधीः । कविर्भवति मन्त्रज्ञो गतिमन्ते लभेत्पराम्

ya etaccaritaṁ prātaḥ sāyaṁ ca smarate sudhīḥ kavirbhavati mantrajño gatimante labhetparām

Whatever wise person remembers this story morning and evening becomes a poet, a knower of mantras, and in the end attains the highest goal.
