The Consecration and Marriage of Nandikeshvara

Verse 1 (shiva.shatarudra.7.1)

नन्दिकेश्वर उवाच । तत्र गत्वा मुनेऽहं वै स्थित्वैकान्तस्थले सुधीः । अतपं तप उग्रं सन्मुनीनामपि दुष्करम्

nandikeśvara uvāca tatra gatvā mune’haṁ vai sthitvaikāntasthale sudhīḥ atapaṁ tapa ugraṁ sanmunīnāmapi duṣkaram

Nandikeshvara said: O sage! Having gone there and settled in a solitary place, I, wise, performed such fierce austerity as would be difficult even for the most virtuous of sages.

Verse 2 (shiva.shatarudra.7.2)

हृत्पुण्डरीकसुषिरे ध्यात्वा देवं त्रियम्बकम् । त्र्यक्षं दशभुजं शान्तं पञ्चवक्त्रं सदाशिवम्

hṛtpuṇḍarīkasuṣire dhyātvā devaṁ triyambakam tryakṣaṁ daśabhujaṁ śāntaṁ pañcavaktraṁ sadāśivam

Meditating within the cavity of the heart-lotus upon the God Tryambaka — three-eyed, ten-armed, serene, five-faced Sadashiva.

Verse 3 (shiva.shatarudra.7.3)

रुद्रजाप्यमकार्षं वै परमध्यानमास्थितः । सरितश्चोत्तरे पुण्ये ह्येकचित्तः समाहितः

rudrajāpyamakārṣaṁ vai paramadhyānamāsthitaḥ saritaścottare puṇye hyekacittaḥ samāhitaḥ

I performed the Rudra-japa, established in supreme meditation, on the sacred ground to the north of the river, with a single-pointed and composed mind.

Verse 4 (shiva.shatarudra.7.4)

तस्मिञ्जाप्येऽथ सम्प्रीतः स्थितं मां परमेश्वरः । तुष्टोऽब्रवीन्महादेवः सोमः सोमार्द्धभूषणः

tasmiñjāpye’tha samprītaḥ sthitaṁ māṁ parameśvaraḥ tuṣṭo’bravīnmahādevaḥ somaḥ somārddhabhūṣaṇaḥ

Then, greatly pleased at my being fixed in that recitation, the Supreme Lord, Soma, the great God adorned with the half-moon, spoke, well satisfied.

Verse 5 (shiva.shatarudra.7.5)

शिव उवाच । शैलादे वरदोऽहं ते तपसानेन तोषितः । साधु तप्तं त्वया धीमन् ब्रूहि यत्ते मनोगतम्

śiva uvāca śailāde varado’haṁ te tapasānena toṣitaḥ sādhu taptaṁ tvayā dhīman brūhi yatte manogatam

Shiva said: O son of Shilada! Pleased by this austerity, I am the giver of a boon to you. Well have you performed austerity, O wise one; tell me what is in your mind.

Verse 6 (shiva.shatarudra.7.6)

स एवमुक्तो देवेन शिरसा पादयोर्नतः । अस्तवं परमेशानं जराशोकविनाशनम्

sa evamukto devena śirasā pādayornataḥ astavaṁ parameśānaṁ jarāśokavināśanam

Thus addressed by the God, bowing my head at his feet, I praised the Supreme Lord, the destroyer of old age and sorrow.

Verse 7 (shiva.shatarudra.7.7)

अथ मां नन्दिनं शम्भुर्भक्त्या परामया युतम् । अश्रुपूर्णेक्षणं सम्यक् पादयोः शिरसा नतम्

atha māṁ nandinaṁ śambhurbhaktyā parāmayā yutam aśrupūrṇekṣaṇaṁ samyak pādayoḥ śirasā natam

Then Shambhu, beholding me, Nandin, filled with supreme devotion, my eyes brimming with tears, my head duly bowed at his feet —

Verse 8 (shiva.shatarudra.7.8)

उत्थाप्य परमेशानः पस्पर्श परमार्तिहा । कराभ्यां सम्मुखाभ्यां तु सङ्गृह्य वृषभध्वजः

utthāpya parameśānaḥ pasparśa paramārtihā karābhyāṁ sammukhābhyāṁ tu saṅgṛhya vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ

— lifted me up, and the Supreme Lord, remover of the greatest afflictions, bearer of the bull-banner, taking hold of me facing him with both hands, touched me.

Verse 9 (shiva.shatarudra.7.9)

निरीक्ष्य गणपांश्चैव देवीं हिमवतः सुताम् । उवाच मां कृपादृष्ट्या समीक्ष्य जगतां पतिः

nirīkṣya gaṇapāṁścaiva devīṁ himavataḥ sutām uvāca māṁ kṛpādṛṣṭyā samīkṣya jagatāṁ patiḥ

Looking upon the Ganas and the Goddess, the daughter of Himavan, the Lord of the worlds, gazing at me with a glance of compassion, spoke.

Verse 10 (shiva.shatarudra.7.10)

वत्स नन्दिन् महाप्राज्ञ मृत्योर्भीतिः कुतस्तव । मयैव प्रेषितौ विप्रौ मत्समस्त्वं न संशयः

vatsa nandin mahāprājña mṛtyorbhītiḥ kutastava mayaiva preṣitau viprau matsamastvaṁ na saṁśayaḥ

O child Nandin, of great wisdom! From where does fear of death come to you? Those two Brahmanas were sent by me alone; you are equal to me — of this there is no doubt.

Verse 11 (shiva.shatarudra.7.11)

अमरो जरया त्यक्तोऽदुःखी गणपतिः सदा । अव्ययश्चाक्षयश्चेष्टः सपिता ससुहृज्जनः

amaro jarayā tyakto’duḥkhī gaṇapatiḥ sadā avyayaścākṣayaśceṣṭaḥ sapitā sasuhṛjjanaḥ

You are immortal, free of old age, ever without sorrow, a lord of my hosts, imperishable, undecaying, beloved, together with your father and your dear ones.

Verse 12 (shiva.shatarudra.7.12)

मद्बलः पार्श्वगो नित्यं ममेष्टो भवितानिशम् । न जरा जन्म मृत्युर्वै मत्प्रसादाद्भविष्यति

madbalaḥ pārśvago nityaṁ mameṣṭo bhavitāniśam na jarā janma mṛtyurvai matprasādādbhaviṣyati

Endowed with my power, ever at my side, you shall remain forever dear to me; by my grace, old age, birth and death shall never come to you.

Verse 13 (shiva.shatarudra.7.13)

नन्दीश्वर उवाच । एवमुक्त्वा शिरोमालां कुशेशयमयीं निजाम् । समुन्मुच्य बबन्धाशु मम कण्ठे कृपानिधिः

nandīśvara uvāca evamuktvā śiromālāṁ kuśeśayamayīṁ nijām samunmucya babandhāśu mama kaṇṭhe kṛpānidhiḥ

Nandishvara said: Having thus spoken, the treasury of compassion, removing his own garland of lotuses from his head, quickly bound it around my neck.

Verse 14 (shiva.shatarudra.7.14)

तयाहं मालया विप्र शुभया कण्ठसक्तया । त्र्यक्षो दशभुजश्चासं द्वितीय इव शङ्करः

tayāhaṁ mālayā vipra śubhayā kaṇṭhasaktayā tryakṣo daśabhujaścāsaṁ dvitīya iva śaṅkaraḥ

O Brahmana, by that auspicious garland fastened to my neck, I became three-eyed and ten-armed, as if a second Shankara.

Verse 15 (shiva.shatarudra.7.15)

तत एव समादाय हस्तेन परमेश्वरः । उवाच ब्रूहि किं तेऽद्य ददामि वरमुत्तमम्

tata eva samādāya hastena parameśvaraḥ uvāca brūhi kiṁ te’dya dadāmi varamuttamam

Then the Supreme Lord, taking me by the hand, said: "Speak — what excellent boon shall I give you today?"

Verse 16 (shiva.shatarudra.7.16)

ततो जटाश्रितं वारि गृहीत्वा हारनिर्मलम् । उक्त्वा नदी भवेतीह विससर्ज वृषध्वजः

tato jaṭāśritaṁ vāri gṛhītvā hāranirmalam uktvā nadī bhavetīha visasarja vṛṣadhvajaḥ

Then, taking the water lodged in his matted locks, pure as a necklace, the bull-bannered one, saying "become a river here," released it.

Verse 17 (shiva.shatarudra.7.17)

ततः पञ्चमिता नद्यः प्रावर्तन्त शुभावहाः । सुतोयाश्च महावेगा दिव्यरूपा च सुन्दरीः

tataḥ pañcamitā nadyaḥ prāvartanta śubhāvahāḥ sutoyāśca mahāvegā divyarūpā ca sundarīḥ

Then five auspicious rivers began to flow, of pure water, of great swiftness, of divine and beautiful form.

Verse 18 (shiva.shatarudra.7.18)

जटोदका त्रिस्रोताश्च वृषध्वनिरितीव हि । स्वर्णोदका जम्बुनदी पञ्च नद्यः प्रकीर्तिताः

jaṭodakā trisrotāśca vṛṣadhvaniritīva hi svarṇodakā jambunadī pañca nadyaḥ prakīrtitāḥ

Jatodaka, Trisrota, Vrishadhvani, Svarnodaka, and Jambunadi — these five rivers are proclaimed.

Verse 19 (shiva.shatarudra.7.19)

एतत्पञ्चनदं नाम शिवपृष्ठतमं शुभम् । जपेश्वरसमीपे तु पवित्रं परमं मुने

etatpañcanadaṁ nāma śivapṛṣṭhatamaṁ śubham japeśvarasamīpe tu pavitraṁ paramaṁ mune

O sage! This place called Panchanada, closest to Shiva, auspicious, near Japeshvara, is supremely sacred.

Verse 20 (shiva.shatarudra.7.20)

यः पञ्चनदमासाद्य स्नात्वा जप्त्वेश्वरेश्वरम् । पूजयेच्छिवसायुज्यं प्रयात्येव न संशयः

yaḥ pañcanadamāsādya snātvā japtveśvareśvaram pūjayecchivasāyujyaṁ prayātyeva na saṁśayaḥ

Whoever comes to Panchanada, bathes, recites the name of the Lord of lords, and worships him, indeed attains union (sayujya) with Shiva — of this there is no doubt.

Verse 21 (shiva.shatarudra.7.21)

अथ शम्भुरुवाचोमामभिषिञ्चामि नन्दिनम् । गणेन्द्रं व्याहरिष्यामि किं वा त्वं मन्यसेऽव्यये

atha śambhuruvācomāmabhiṣiñcāmi nandinam gaṇendraṁ vyāhariṣyāmi kiṁ vā tvaṁ manyase’vyaye

Then Shambhu said to Uma: "I shall consecrate Nandin, and proclaim him lord of the Ganas — what do you think of this, O imperishable one?"

Verse 22 (shiva.shatarudra.7.22)

उमोवाच । दातुमर्हसि देवेश नन्दिने परमेश्वर । महाप्रियतमो नाथ शैलादिस्तनयो मम

umovāca dātumarhasi deveśa nandine parameśvara mahāpriyatamo nātha śailādistanayo mama

Uma said: O Lord of gods, O Supreme Lord! It is fitting to give this to Nandin; O Lord, this son of Shilada is most dear to me.

Verse 23 (shiva.shatarudra.7.23)

नन्दीश्वर उवाच । ततः स शङ्करः स्वीयान्सस्मार गणपान्वरान् । स्वतन्त्रः परमेशानः सर्वदो भक्तवत्सलः

nandīśvara uvāca tataḥ sa śaṅkaraḥ svīyānsasmāra gaṇapānvarān svatantraḥ parameśānaḥ sarvado bhaktavatsalaḥ

Nandishvara said: Then the independent, all-giving, devotee-loving Supreme Lord Shankara remembered his excellent lords of the Ganas.

Verse 24 (shiva.shatarudra.7.24)

स्मरणादेव रुद्रस्य सम्प्राप्ताश्च गणेश्वराः । असङ्ख्याता महामोदाः शङ्कराकृतयोऽखिलाः

smaraṇādeva rudrasya samprāptāśca gaṇeśvarāḥ asaṅkhyātā mahāmodāḥ śaṅkarākṛtayo’khilāḥ

At the mere thought of Rudra, countless lords of the Ganas arrived, filled with great joy, all bearing the very form of Shankara.

Verse 25 (shiva.shatarudra.7.25)

ते गणेशाः शिवं देवीं प्रणम्याहुः शुभं वचः । ते प्रणम्य करौ बद्ध्वा नतस्कन्धा महाबलाः

te gaṇeśāḥ śivaṁ devīṁ praṇamyāhuḥ śubhaṁ vacaḥ te praṇamya karau baddhvā nataskandhā mahābalāḥ

Those lords of the Ganas, bowing to Shiva and the Goddess, spoke auspicious words; those mighty ones, having bowed, with hands joined and shoulders bent, stood there.

Verse 26 (shiva.shatarudra.7.26)

गणेशा ऊचुः । किमर्थं च स्मृता देव ह्याज्ञापय महाप्रभो । किङ्करान्नः समायातांस्त्रिपुरार्दन कामद

gaṇeśā ūcuḥ kimarthaṁ ca smṛtā deva hyājñāpaya mahāprabho kiṅkarānnaḥ samāyātāṁstripurārdana kāmada

The lords of the Ganas said: O God! For what reason have we been remembered? Command us, O great Lord. O destroyer of Tripura, O granter of desires! We, your servants, have arrived.

Verse 27 (shiva.shatarudra.7.27)

किं सागरान् शोषयामो यमं वा सह किङ्करैः । हन्मो मृत्युं महामृत्युं विशेषं वृद्धपद्मजम्

kiṁ sāgarān śoṣayāmo yamaṁ vā saha kiṅkaraiḥ hanmo mṛtyuṁ mahāmṛtyuṁ viśeṣaṁ vṛddhapadmajam

Shall we dry up the oceans, or slay Yama together with his servants? Shall we strike down Death and Great Death, or, particularly, the aged lotus-born Brahma?

Verse 28 (shiva.shatarudra.7.28)

बद्ध्वेन्द्रं सह देवैश्च विष्णुं वा पार्षदैः सह । आनयामः सुसङ्क्रुद्धान्दैत्यान्वा दानवैः सह

baddhvendraṁ saha devaiśca viṣṇuṁ vā pārṣadaiḥ saha ānayāmaḥ susaṅkruddhāndaityānvā dānavaiḥ saha

Shall we bind Indra together with the gods, or Vishnu together with his attendants? Shall we, in great fury, bring the Daityas along with the Danavas?

Verse 29 (shiva.shatarudra.7.29)

कस्याद्य व्यसनं घोरं करिष्यामस्तवाज्ञया । कस्य वाद्योत्सवो देव सर्वकामसमृद्धये

kasyādya vyasanaṁ ghoraṁ kariṣyāmastavājñayā kasya vādyotsavo deva sarvakāmasamṛddhaye

O God, whose terrible ruin shall we bring about today, at your command? Or whose celebration shall we hold today, for the fulfillment of every desire?

Verse 30 (shiva.shatarudra.7.30)

नन्दीश्वर उवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तेषां गणानां वीरवादिनाम् । उवाच तान्स प्रशंस्य गणेशान्परमेश्वरः

nandīśvara uvāca ityākarṇya vacasteṣāṁ gaṇānāṁ vīravādinām uvāca tānsa praśaṁsya gaṇeśānparameśvaraḥ

Nandishvara said: Having heard the words of those heroic-speaking Ganas, the Supreme Lord, praising those lords of the Ganas, spoke to them.

Verse 31 (shiva.shatarudra.7.31)

शिव उवाच । नन्दीश्वरोऽयं पुत्रो मे सर्वेषामीश्वरेश्वरः । प्रियो गणाग्रणीः सर्वैः क्रियतां वचनं मम

śiva uvāca nandīśvaro’yaṁ putro me sarveṣāmīśvareśvaraḥ priyo gaṇāgraṇīḥ sarvaiḥ kriyatāṁ vacanaṁ mama

Shiva said: This Nandishvara is my son, the lord of lords over all, beloved, the foremost of the Ganas — carry out this command of mine.

Verse 32 (shiva.shatarudra.7.32)

सर्वे प्रीत्याभिषिञ्चध्वं मद्गणानां गतिं पतिम् । अद्यप्रभृति युष्माकमयं नन्दीश्वरः प्रभुः

sarve prītyābhiṣiñcadhvaṁ madgaṇānāṁ gatiṁ patim adyaprabhṛti yuṣmākamayaṁ nandīśvaraḥ prabhuḥ

All of you, with love, consecrate him, the refuge and lord of my Ganas; from today, this Nandishvara is your master.

Verse 33 (shiva.shatarudra.7.33)

नन्दीश्वर उवाच । एवमुक्ताः शङ्करेण गणपाः सर्व एव ते । एवमस्त्विति सम्प्रोच्य सम्भारानाहरँस्ततः

nandīśvara uvāca evamuktāḥ śaṅkareṇa gaṇapāḥ sarva eva te evamastviti samprocya sambhārānāhara~stataḥ

Nandishvara said: Thus addressed by Shankara, all those lords of the Ganas said, "so be it," and then began bringing the necessary materials.

Verse 34 (shiva.shatarudra.7.34)

ततो देवाश्च सेन्द्राश्च नारायणमुखास्तथा । मुनयः सर्वतो लोका आजग्मुर्मुदिताननाः

tato devāśca sendrāśca nārāyaṇamukhāstathā munayaḥ sarvato lokā ājagmurmuditānanāḥ

Then the gods together with Indra, and Narayana and the others, the sages, and beings from all the worlds, arrived with joyful faces.

Verse 35 (shiva.shatarudra.7.35)

पितामहोऽपि भगवन्नियोगाच्छङ्करस्य वै । चकार नन्दिनः सर्वमभिषेकं समाहितः

pitāmaho’pi bhagavanniyogācchaṅkarasya vai cakāra nandinaḥ sarvamabhiṣekaṁ samāhitaḥ

The Lord Grandsire Brahma too, by the command of Shankara, composed in mind, performed the complete consecration of Nandin.

Verse 36 (shiva.shatarudra.7.36)

ततो विष्णुस्ततः शक्रो लोकपालास्तथैव च । ऋषयस्तुष्टुवुश्चैव पितामहपुरोगमाः

tato viṣṇustataḥ śakro lokapālāstathaiva ca ṛṣayastuṣṭuvuścaiva pitāmahapurogamāḥ

Then Vishnu, then Indra, and likewise the guardians of the quarters, and the sages, with Brahma at their head, offered praise.

Verse 37 (shiva.shatarudra.7.37)

स्तुतिमत्सु ततस्तेषु विष्णुः सर्वजगत्पतिः । शिरस्यञ्जलिमाधाय तुष्टाव च समाहितः

stutimatsu tatasteṣu viṣṇuḥ sarvajagatpatiḥ śirasyañjalimādhāya tuṣṭāva ca samāhitaḥ

When all of them were praising, then Vishnu, lord of the whole universe, placing his folded hands upon his head, composed himself and offered praise too.

Verse 38 (shiva.shatarudra.7.38)

प्राञ्जलिः प्रणतो भूत्वा जयशब्दं चकार च । ततो गणाधिपाः सर्व ततो देवास्ततोऽसुराः

prāñjaliḥ praṇato bhūtvā jayaśabdaṁ cakāra ca tato gaṇādhipāḥ sarva tato devāstato’surāḥ

With folded hands, bowing down, he raised a shout of victory; then all the lords of the Ganas, then the gods, then the Asuras, did likewise.

Verse 39 (shiva.shatarudra.7.39)

एवं स्तुतश्चाभिषिक्तो देवैः सब्रह्मकैस्तदा । नन्दीश्वरोहं विप्रेन्द्र नियोगात्प रमेशितुः

evaṁ stutaścābhiṣikto devaiḥ sabrahmakaistadā nandīśvarohaṁ viprendra niyogātpa rameśituḥ

Thus praised and consecrated by the gods together with Brahma, O best of Brahmanas, I became Nandishvara, by the command of the Supreme Lord.

Verse 40 (shiva.shatarudra.7.40)

उद्वाहश्च कृतस्तत्र नियोगात्परमेष्ठिनः । महोत्सवयुतः प्रीत्या विष्णुब्रह्मादिभिर्मम

udvāhaśca kṛtastatra niyogātparameṣṭhinaḥ mahotsavayutaḥ prītyā viṣṇubrahmādibhirmama

There, by the command of the Supreme Lord, my marriage too was performed, with great celebration and affection, by Vishnu, Brahma and the others.

Verse 41 (shiva.shatarudra.7.41)

मरुतां च सुता देवी सुयशास्तु मनोहरा । पत्नी सा मेऽभवद्दिव्या मनोनयननन्दिनी

marutāṁ ca sutā devī suyaśāstu manoharā patnī sā me’bhavaddivyā manonayananandinī

The lovely daughter of the Maruts, the goddess Suyasha, became my divine wife, delighting both mind and eyes.

Verse 42 (shiva.shatarudra.7.42)

लब्धं शशिप्रभं छत्रं तया तत्र विभूषितम् । चामरैश्चामरासक्तहस्ताग्रैः स्त्रीगणैर्युतम्

labdhaṁ śaśiprabhaṁ chatraṁ tayā tatra vibhūṣitam cāmaraiścāmarāsaktahastāgraiḥ strīgaṇairyutam

There I obtained a canopy radiant as the moon, adorned by, and accompanied by, groups of women whose hands, tipped with chowries, held fly-whisks.

Verse 43 (shiva.shatarudra.7.43)

सिंहासनं च परमं तया चाधिष्ठितं मया । अलङ्कृतो महालक्ष्म्या मुकुटाद्यैः सुभूषणैः

siṁhāsanaṁ ca paramaṁ tayā cādhiṣṭhitaṁ mayā alaṅkṛto mahālakṣmyā mukuṭādyaiḥ subhūṣaṇaiḥ

There I obtained a supreme throne, upon which I sat; I was adorned with great splendor, with a crown and other beautiful ornaments.

Verse 44 (shiva.shatarudra.7.44)

लब्धो हारश्च परमो देव्याः कण्ठगतस्तथा । वृषेन्द्रश्च शितो नागस्सिंहः सिंहध्वजस्तथा

labdho hāraśca paramo devyāḥ kaṇṭhagatastathā vṛṣendraśca śito nāgassiṁhaḥ siṁhadhvajastathā

I also obtained a supreme necklace resting on the Goddess's throat, and a lordly bull, a sharp-tusked elephant, a lion, and a lion-bannered standard.

Verse 45 (shiva.shatarudra.7.45)

रथश्च हेमहारश्च चन्द्रबिम्बसमः शुभः । अन्यान्यपि च वस्तूनि लब्धानि हि मया मुने

rathaśca hemahāraśca candrabimbasamaḥ śubhaḥ anyānyapi ca vastūni labdhāni hi mayā mune

O sage! A chariot, a golden necklace, and an auspicious canopy like the disc of the moon, and many other things besides, were obtained by me.

Verse 46 (shiva.shatarudra.7.46)

एवं कृतविवाहोऽहं तया पत्न्या महामुने । पादौ ववन्दे शम्भोश्च शिवाया ब्रह्मणो हरेः

evaṁ kṛtavivāho’haṁ tayā patnyā mahāmune pādau vavande śambhośca śivāyā brahmaṇo hareḥ

O great sage! Thus married to that wife, I bowed at the feet of Shambhu, Shiva (Parvati), Brahma, and Hari (Vishnu).

Verse 47 (shiva.shatarudra.7.47)

तथाविधं त्रिलोकेशः सपत्नीकं च मां प्रभुः । प्रोवाच परया प्रीत्या स शिवो भक्तवत्सलः

tathāvidhaṁ trilokeśaḥ sapatnīkaṁ ca māṁ prabhuḥ provāca parayā prītyā sa śivo bhaktavatsalaḥ

Then that Lord of the three worlds, the devotee-loving Shiva, addressed me, together with my wife, with the utmost affection.

Verse 48 (shiva.shatarudra.7.48)

ईश्वर उवाच । शृणु सत्पुत्र तातस्त्वं सुयशेयं तव प्रिया । ददामि ते वरं प्रीत्या यत्ते मनसि वाञ्छितम्

īśvara uvāca śṛṇu satputra tātastvaṁ suyaśeyaṁ tava priyā dadāmi te varaṁ prītyā yatte manasi vāñchitam

Ishvara said: Listen, O virtuous son! You are the father, and this Suyasha is your beloved. I lovingly grant you the boon you desire in your mind.

Verse 49 (shiva.shatarudra.7.49)

सदाऽहं तव नन्दीश सन्तुष्टोऽस्मि गणेश्वर । देव्या च सहितो वत्स शृणु मे परमं वचः

sadā’haṁ tava nandīśa santuṣṭo’smi gaṇeśvara devyā ca sahito vatsa śṛṇu me paramaṁ vacaḥ

O Nandisha, lord of the Ganas! I am ever pleased with you; O child, together with the Goddess, hear my supreme word.

Verse 50 (shiva.shatarudra.7.50)

सदेष्टश्च विशिष्टश्च परमैश्वर्यसंयुतः । महायोगी महेष्वासः सपिता सपितामहः

sadeṣṭaśca viśiṣṭaśca paramaiśvaryasaṁyutaḥ mahāyogī maheṣvāsaḥ sapitā sapitāmahaḥ

You shall ever be beloved, distinguished, endowed with supreme sovereignty, a great yogi, a mighty archer, together with your father and grandfather.

Verse 51 (shiva.shatarudra.7.51)

अजेयः सर्वजेता च सदा पूज्यो महाबलः । अहं यत्र भवांस्तत्र यत्र त्वं तत्र चाप्यहम्

ajeyaḥ sarvajetā ca sadā pūjyo mahābalaḥ ahaṁ yatra bhavāṁstatra yatra tvaṁ tatra cāpyaham

You shall be unconquerable, victorious over all, ever worthy of worship, and mighty; where I am, there you are, and where you are, there I too am.

Verse 52 (shiva.shatarudra.7.52)

अयं च ते पिता पुत्र परमैश्वर्यसंयुतः । भविष्यति गणाध्यक्षो मम भक्तो महाबलः

ayaṁ ca te pitā putra paramaiśvaryasaṁyutaḥ bhaviṣyati gaṇādhyakṣo mama bhakto mahābalaḥ

O son, this father of yours too shall be endowed with supreme sovereignty, a chief of my Ganas, my devotee, and mighty.

Verse 53 (shiva.shatarudra.7.53)

पितामहोऽपि ते वत्स तथास्तु नियमा इमे । मत्समीपं गमिष्यन्ति मया दत्तवरास्तथा

pitāmaho’pi te vatsa tathāstu niyamā ime matsamīpaṁ gamiṣyanti mayā dattavarāstathā

O child, so shall it be also for your grandfather; all these, observing these disciplines, endowed with the boons I have given, shall come into my presence.

Verse 54 (shiva.shatarudra.7.54)

नन्दीश्वर उवाच । ततो देवी महाभागा नन्दिनं वरदाब्रवीत् । वरं ब्रूहीति मां पुत्र सर्वान्कामान्यथेप्सितान्

nandīśvara uvāca tato devī mahābhāgā nandinaṁ varadābravīt varaṁ brūhīti māṁ putra sarvānkāmānyathepsitān

Nandishvara said: Then the greatly fortunate, boon-giving Goddess said to Nandin: "Ask of me, O son, a boon for all your desires, as you wish."

Verse 55 (shiva.shatarudra.7.55)

तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं देव्याः प्रावोचत्साञ्जलिस्तदा । भक्तिर्भवतु मे देवि पादयोस्ते सदा वरा

tacchrutvā vacanaṁ devyāḥ prāvocatsāñjalistadā bhaktirbhavatu me devi pādayoste sadā varā

Hearing that word of the Goddess, with folded hands I said: "O Goddess, may devotion to your feet remain ever excellent in me."

Verse 56 (shiva.shatarudra.7.56)

श्रुत्वा मम वचो देवी ह्येवमस्त्विति साब्रवीत् । सुयशां तां च सुप्रीत्या नन्दिप्रियतमां शिवाम्

śrutvā mama vaco devī hyevamastviti sābravīt suyaśāṁ tāṁ ca suprītyā nandipriyatamāṁ śivām

Hearing my words, the Goddess said, "so be it," and, with great affection, blessed that Suyasha too, the most beloved and auspicious wife of Nandin.

Verse 57 (shiva.shatarudra.7.57)

देव्युवाच । वत्से वरं यथेष्टं हि त्रिनेत्रा जन्मवर्जिता । पुत्रपौत्रैस्तु भक्तिर्मे तथा च भर्तुरेव हि

devyuvāca vatse varaṁ yatheṣṭaṁ hi trinetrā janmavarjitā putrapautraistu bhaktirme tathā ca bhartureva hi

The Goddess said: O child, may your desired boon be granted; may you be three-eyed and free from further birth; together with your sons and grandsons, may your devotion ever remain fixed on me and likewise on your husband.

Verse 58 (shiva.shatarudra.7.58)

नन्द्युवाच । तदा ब्रह्मा च विष्णुश्च सर्वे देवगणाश्च वै । ताभ्यां वरान्ददुः प्रीत्या सुप्रसन्नाः शिवाज्ञया

nandyuvāca tadā brahmā ca viṣṇuśca sarve devagaṇāśca vai tābhyāṁ varāndaduḥ prītyā suprasannāḥ śivājñayā

Nandin said: Then Brahma, Vishnu, and all the hosts of gods, greatly pleased, at Shiva's command, lovingly bestowed boons upon us both.

Verse 59 (shiva.shatarudra.7.59)

सान्वयं मां गृहीत्वेशस्ततः सम्बन्धिबान्धवैः । आरुह्य वृषमीशानो गतो देव्या निजं गृहम्

sānvayaṁ māṁ gṛhītveśastataḥ sambandhibāndhavaiḥ āruhya vṛṣamīśāno gato devyā nijaṁ gṛham

Then Ishana, taking me together with my family, with my relatives and kinsmen, mounting the bull, went with the Goddess to his own abode.

Verse 60 (shiva.shatarudra.7.60)

विष्ण्वादयः सुराः सर्वे प्रशंसन्तो ह्यमी तदा । स्वधामानि ययुः प्रीत्या संस्तुवन्तः शिवं शिवम्

viṣṇvādayaḥ surāḥ sarve praśaṁsanto hyamī tadā svadhāmāni yayuḥ prītyā saṁstuvantaḥ śivaṁ śivam

Vishnu and all the other gods, praising, went with love to their own abodes, extolling Shiva and Shiva (his consort).

Verse 61 (shiva.shatarudra.7.61)

इति ते कथितो वत्स स्वावतारो महामुने । सदानन्दकरः पुंसां शिवभक्तिप्रवर्द्धनः

iti te kathito vatsa svāvatāro mahāmune sadānandakaraḥ puṁsāṁ śivabhaktipravarddhanaḥ

O child, O great sage! Thus has my own incarnation been told to you, ever a source of joy for men and an increaser of devotion to Shiva.

Verse 62 (shiva.shatarudra.7.62)

य इदं नन्दिनो जन्म वरदानं तथा मम । अभिषेकं विवाहं च शृणुयाच्छ्रावयेत्तथा

ya idaṁ nandino janma varadānaṁ tathā mama abhiṣekaṁ vivāhaṁ ca śṛṇuyācchrāvayettathā

Whoever hears, or causes others to hear, this account of Nandin's birth, and of my bestowal of the boon, the consecration, and the marriage —

Verse 63 (shiva.shatarudra.7.63)

पठेद्वा पाठयेद्वापि श्रद्धावान्भक्तिसंयुतः । इह सर्वसुखं भुक्त्वा परत्र लभते गतिम्

paṭhedvā pāṭhayedvāpi śraddhāvānbhaktisaṁyutaḥ iha sarvasukhaṁ bhuktvā paratra labhate gatim

— or, filled with faith and devotion, reads it or causes it to be read, having enjoyed all happiness in this world, attains the supreme state in the world beyond.
