Kotirudra Samhita · Chapter 1
The Greatness of the Jyotirlingas and Their Upalingas
Verse 1 (shiva.kotirudra.1.1)
yo dhatte nijamāyayaiva bhuvanākāraṁ vikārojjhito yasyāhuḥ karuṇākaṭākṣavibhavau svargāpavargābhidhau pratyagbodhasukhādvayaṁ hṛdi sadā paśyanti yaṁ yogina- stasmai śailasutāñcitārdhavapuṣe śaśvannamastejase
Salutations forever to that radiance, free from all change, who assumes the form of the universe through his own Maya; whose compassionate glance, they say, bestows the two glories called heaven and liberation; whom yogis ever behold in their hearts as the bliss of inward, non-dual awareness; whose body is adorned, one half, by the mountain's daughter.
Verse 2 (shiva.kotirudra.1.2)
kṛpālalitavīkṣaṇaṁ smitamanojñavaktrāmbujaṁ śaśāṅkakalayojjvalaṁ śamitaghoratāpatrayam karotu kimapi sphuratparamasaukhyasaccidvapu- rdharādharasutābhujodvalayitaṁ maho maṅgalam
May that indescribable, auspicious splendour bring us good — whose glance is gentle with compassion, whose lotus face is charming with a smile, who is bright with the crescent moon, who has quelled the three fierce sorrows, and whose form of radiant supreme bliss, being and consciousness is encircled by the arms of the mountain's daughter.
Verse 3 (shiva.kotirudra.1.3)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ samyaguktaṁ tvayā sūta lokānāṁ hitakāmyayā śivāvatāramāhātmyaṁ nānākhyānasamanvitam
The sages said: O Suta, out of a desire for the world's welfare, you have well related the greatness of Shiva's incarnations together with their many stories.
Verse 4 (shiva.kotirudra.1.4)
punaśca kathyatāṁ tāta śivamāhātmyamuttamam liṅgasambandhi suprītyā dhanyastvaṁ śaivasattama
Now, dear one, relate again with pleasure the supreme greatness of Shiva connected with the linga; blessed are you, O foremost among Shiva's devotees.
Verse 5 (shiva.kotirudra.1.5)
śṛṇvantastvanmukhāmbhojānna tṛptāḥ smo vayaṁ prabho śaivaṁ yaśo’mṛtaṁ ramyaṁ tadeva punarucyatām
Listening from your lotus mouth, O lord, we are never satisfied; let that same delightful, nectar-like glory of Shiva be told again.
Verse 6 (shiva.kotirudra.1.6)
pṛthivyāṁ yāni liṅgāni tīrthe tīrthe śubhāni hi anyatra vā sthale yāni prasiddhāni sthitāni vai
Whatever auspicious lingas exist on earth at every sacred ford, or whatever renowned ones stand in other places —
Verse 7 (shiva.kotirudra.1.7)
tāni tāni ca divyāni liṅgāni parameśituḥ vyāsaśiṣya samācakṣva lokānāṁ hitakāmyayā
— those divine lingas of the Supreme Lord, O disciple of Vyasa, relate to us fully, out of desire for the welfare of the world.
Verse 8 (shiva.kotirudra.1.8)
sūta uvāca sādhu pṛṣṭamṛṣiśreṣṭhā lokānāṁ hitakāmyayā kathayāmi bhavatsnehāttāni saṅkṣepato dvijāḥ
Suta said: Well have you asked, O best of sages, out of desire for the world's welfare. Out of affection for you, O brahmins, I shall relate them in brief.
Verse 9 (shiva.kotirudra.1.9)
sarveṣāṁ śivaliṅgānāṁ mune saṅkhyā na vidyate sarvā liṅgamayī bhūmiḥ sarvaṁ liṅgamayaṁ jagat
O sage, there is no counting the number of all Shiva-lingas; the entire earth is made of linga, the whole universe is linga-formed.
Verse 10 (shiva.kotirudra.1.10)
liṅgayuktāni tīrthāni sarvaṁ liṅge pratiṣṭhitam saṅkhyā na vidyate teṣāṁ tāni kiñcidbravīmyaham
The sacred fords are all endowed with lingas; everything rests upon the linga. Their number cannot be counted; I shall tell of some of them.
Verse 11 (shiva.kotirudra.1.11)
yatkiñcid dṛśyate dṛśyaṁ varṇyate smaryate ca yat tatsarvaṁ śivarūpaṁ hi nānyadastīti kiñcana
Whatever visible thing is seen, described, or remembered — all of it is verily the form of Shiva; nothing else exists at all.
Verse 12 (shiva.kotirudra.1.12)

Verse 13 (shiva.kotirudra.1.13)
pātāle cāpi vartante svarge cāpi tathā bhuvi sarvatra pūjyate śambhuḥ sa devāsuramānuṣaiḥ

lokānāmupakārārthaṁ svaliṅgaṁ cāpyakalpayat talliṅgaṁ pūjayitvā tu siddhiṁ samadhigacchati
For the benefit of the worlds he also established his own linga there; by worshipping that linga, one attains perfection.
Verse 18 (shiva.kotirudra.1.18)
pṛthivyāṁ yāni liṅgāni teṣāṁ saṅkhyā na vidyate tathāpi ca pradhānāni kathyante ca mayā dvijāḥ
There is no counting the lingas upon the earth; still, O brahmins, the principal ones are being told by me.

Among the principal ones, I shall tell the foremost, hearing which a man is instantly freed from all sins.
