Chapter 12All chaptersChapter 14

Verse 1 (shiva.kotirudra.13.1)

sūta uvāca yathābhavalliṅgarūpaḥ sampūjyastribhave śivaḥ tathoktaṁ vā dvijāḥ prītyā kimanyacchrotumicchatha

Suta said: How Shiva, worshipped in linga-form, came to be so in the three worlds — this has now been told with love, O brahmins. What else do you wish to hear?

Verse 2 (shiva.kotirudra.13.2)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ andhakeśvaraliṅgasya mahimānaṁ vada prabho tathānyacchivaliṅgānāṁ prītyā vaktumihārhasi

The sages said: Tell us, O lord, the greatness of the Andhakeshvara linga; and be pleased to relate, with love, the greatness of other Shiva-lingas as well.

Verse 3 (shiva.kotirudra.13.3)

sūta uvāca purābdhigartamāśritya vasan daityo’ndhakāsuraḥ svavaśaṁ kārayāmāsa trailokyaṁ surasūdanaḥ

Suta said: Formerly, dwelling in a cave by the ocean, the demon Andhakasura, slayer of the gods, brought the three worlds under his own sway.

Verse 4 (shiva.kotirudra.13.4)

tasmādgartācca niḥsṛtya pīḍayitvā punaḥ prajāḥ prāviśacca tadā daityastaṁ gartaṁ suparākramaḥ

Coming out from that cave, and having again tormented the people, that most powerful demon would then re-enter the cave.

Verse 5 (shiva.kotirudra.13.5)

devāśca duḥkhitāḥ sarve śivaṁ prārthya punaḥpunaḥ sarvaṁ nivedayāmāsuḥ svaduḥkhaṁ ca munīśvarāḥ

O lords of sages, all the distressed gods, entreating Shiva again and again, related to him the whole of their suffering.

Verse 6 (shiva.kotirudra.13.6)

sūta uvāca tadākarṇya vacasteṣāṁ devānāṁ parameśvaraḥ pratyuvāca prasannātmā duṣṭahantā satāṁ gatiḥ

Suta said: Hearing their words, the Supreme Lord, of gracious heart, destroyer of the wicked, refuge of the virtuous, replied to those gods.

Verse 7 (shiva.kotirudra.13.7)

śiva uvāca ghātayiṣyāmi taṁ daityamandhakaṁ surasūdanam sainyaṁ ca nīyatāndevā hyāyāmi ca gaṇaiḥ saha

Shiva said: I shall slay that demon Andhaka, the slayer of gods. Let the army be brought, O gods; I shall come along with my hosts.

Verse 8 (shiva.kotirudra.13.8)

tasmādgartādandhake hi devarṣidruhi bhīkare niḥsṛte ca tadā tasmindevā gartamupāśritāḥ

When that terrifying Andhaka, hostile to gods and sages, emerged from that cave, the gods then took position around the cave.

Verse 9 (shiva.kotirudra.13.9)

daityāśca devatāścaiva yuddhaṁ cakruḥ sudāruṇam śivānugrahato devāḥ prabalāścābhava~stadā

The demons and the gods then fought a most terrible battle; by Shiva's grace, the gods became powerful in it.

Verse 10 (shiva.kotirudra.13.10)

devaiśca pīḍitaḥ so’pi yāvadgartamupāgataḥ tāvacchūlena samprotaḥ śivena paramātmanā

Harassed by the gods, as soon as he reached the cave, he was pierced through by the trident of Shiva, the Supreme Self.

Verse 11 (shiva.kotirudra.13.11)

tatratyaśca tadā śambhuṁ dhyātvā samprārthayattadā antakāle ca tvāṁ dṛṣṭvā tādṛśo bhavati kṣaṇāt

He then, impaled there, meditating on Shambhu, made this entreaty: "One who beholds you at the time of death instantly becomes such as you."

Verse 12 (shiva.kotirudra.13.12)

ityevaṁ saṁstutaḥ so’pi prasannaḥ śaṅkarastadā uvāca vacanaṁ tatra varaṁ brūhi dadāmi te

Thus praised, Shankara too became pleased, and spoke this word there: "Ask a boon; I shall grant it to you."

Verse 13 (shiva.kotirudra.13.13)

ityevaṁ vacanaṁ śrutvā sa daityaḥ punarabravīt supraṇamya śivaṁ stutvā sattvabhāvamupāśritaḥ

Hearing this word, that demon, having bowed well to Shiva and praised him, and now embracing a state of purity, spoke again.

Verse 14 (shiva.kotirudra.13.14)

andhaka uvāca yadi prasanno deveśa svabhaktiṁ dehi me śubhām kṛpāṁ kṛtvā viśeṣeṇa saṁsthito bhava ceha vai

Andhaka said: If you are pleased, O lord of gods, grant me pure devotion to yourself; and, showing especial grace, remain established here.

Verse 15 (shiva.kotirudra.13.15)

sūta uvāca ityuktastena daityaṁ taṁ tadgarte cākṣipaddharaḥ svayaṁ tatra sthito liṅgarūpo’sau lokakāmyayā

Suta said: Thus addressed by him, Hara cast that demon into the cave, and himself remained there in linga-form, for the welfare of the world.

Verse 16 (shiva.kotirudra.13.16)

andhakeśaṁ ca talliṅgaṁ nityaṁ yaḥ pūjayennaraḥ ṣaṇmāsājjāyate tasya vāñchāsiddhirna saṁśayaḥ

Whoever regularly worships that linga called Andhakesha — for him, within six months, the fulfilment of his desire arises, without doubt.

Verse 17 (shiva.kotirudra.13.17)

vṛttyarthaṁ pūjayelliṅgaṁ lokasya hitakārakam ṣaṇmāsaṁ yo dvijaścaiva sa vai devalakaḥ smṛtaḥ

Whatever brahmin worships that linga, which benefits the people, for the sake of his livelihood, for six months — he indeed is called a "devalaka," a temple priest.

Verse 18 (shiva.kotirudra.13.18)

yathā devalakaścaiva sa bhavediha vai tadā devalakaśca yaḥ prokto nādhikāro dvijasya hi

As one becomes a devalaka in this way, then — for one who is called a devalaka, a brahmin's usual privileges no longer apply.

Verse 19 (shiva.kotirudra.13.19)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ devalakaśca kaḥ proktaḥ kiṁ kāryaṁ tasya vidyate tattvaṁ vada mahāprājña lokānāṁ hitahetave

The sages said: What is meant by "devalaka," and what is his function? O most wise one, tell us the truth of this, for the welfare of the people.

Verse 20 (shiva.kotirudra.13.20)

sūta uvāca dadhīcirnāma vipro yo dharmiṣṭho vedapāragaḥ śivabhaktirato nityaṁ śivaśāstraparāyaṇaḥ

Suta said: There was a brahmin named Dadhichi, righteous, learned in the Vedas, ever devoted to Shiva-bhakti, wholly given to Shaiva scripture.

Verse 21 (shiva.kotirudra.13.21)

tasya putrastathā hyāsītsmṛto nāmnā sudarśanaḥ tasya bhāryā dukūlā ca nāmnā duṣṭakulodbhavā

His son was known by the name Sudarshana; his wife was Dukula, born of a wicked family, by name.

Verse 22 (shiva.kotirudra.13.22)

tadvaśe sa ca bhartāsīttasya putracatuṣṭayam so’pi nityaṁ śivasyaiva pūjāṁ ca sma karotyasau

Her husband was under her control; they had four sons. He too, nevertheless, always performed the worship of Shiva alone.

Verse 23 (shiva.kotirudra.13.23)

dadhīcestu tadā hyāsīd grāmāntaraniveśanam jñātisaṁyogataścaiva jñātibhirna sa mocitaḥ

Dadhichi, at that time, had to reside in another village, on account of family obligations, and was not released by his relatives.

Verse 24 (shiva.kotirudra.13.24)

kathayitvā ca putraṁ sa śivabhaktirato bhava ityuktvā sa gato mukto dadhīciḥ śaivasattamaḥ

Having instructed his son, "Be devoted to Shiva-bhakti," and saying this, that excellent Shiva-devotee Dadhichi went away, freed of his obligation there.

Verse 25 (shiva.kotirudra.13.25)

sudarśanastatputro’pi śivapūjāṁ cakāra ha evaṁ cirataraḥ kālo vyatīyāya munīśvarāḥ

O lords of sages, his son Sudarshana too performed Shiva's worship. Thus a very long time passed.

Verse 26 (shiva.kotirudra.13.26)

evaṁ ca śivarātriśca samāyātā kadācana tasyāṁ copoṣitāḥ sarve svayaṁ saṁyogatastadā

Then once, Shivaratri arrived; on it, all of them, by the natural course of circumstance, observed the fast.

Verse 27 (shiva.kotirudra.13.27)

pūjāṁ kṛtvā gataḥ so’pi sudarśana iti smṛtaḥ strīsaṅgaṁ śivarātrau tu kṛtvā punarihāgataḥ

That Sudarshana too, having performed worship, went away — but having, on the night of Shivaratri itself, engaged in union with his wife, he came back here again.

Verse 28 (shiva.kotirudra.13.28)

na snānaṁ tena ca kṛtaṁ tadrātryāṁ śivapūjanam tena tatkarmapākena kruddhaḥ provāca śaṅkaraḥ

He did not then bathe, and yet still performed Shiva's worship that night; by the ripening of that deed, Shankara, enraged, spoke.

Verse 29 (shiva.kotirudra.13.29)

maheśvara uvāca śivarātryāṁ tvayā duṣṭa sevanaṁ ca striyāḥ kṛtam asnātena madīyā ca kṛtā pūjāvivekinā

Maheshvara said: O wicked one, on Shivaratri you engaged in union with your wife, and, unbathed and without discernment, performed my worship.

Verse 30 (shiva.kotirudra.13.30)

jñātvā caivaṁ kṛtaṁ yasmāttasmāttvaṁ jaḍatāṁ vraja mamāspṛśyo bhava tvaṁ ca dūrato darśanaṁ kuru

Since you have knowingly done this, go therefore into a state of dullness; become untouchable to me, and behold me only from a distance.

Verse 31 (shiva.kotirudra.13.31)

sūta uvāca iti śapto maheśena dādhīciḥ sa sudarśanaḥ jaḍatvaṁ prāptavānsadyaḥ śivamāyāvimohitaḥ

Suta said: Thus cursed by Mahesha, that son of Dadhichi, Sudarshana, deluded by Shiva's Maya, instantly attained a state of dullness.

Verse 32 (shiva.kotirudra.13.32)

etasminsamaye viprā dadhīciḥ śaivasattamaḥ grāmāntarātsamāyāto vṛttāntaṁ śrutavā~śca saḥ

O brahmins, at that very time, the excellent Shiva-devotee Dadhichi returned from the other village, and heard of this event.

Verse 33 (shiva.kotirudra.13.33)

śivena bhartsitaḥ so’pi duḥkhito’bhūdatīva hi ruroda hā hato’smīti duḥkhena sutakarmaṇā

Learning that his son had been rebuked by Shiva, he too became exceedingly grieved; struck with sorrow by his son's deed, he wept, crying, "Alas, I am ruined!"

Verse 34 (shiva.kotirudra.13.34)

punaḥpunaruvāceti sa dadhīciḥ satāṁ mataḥ anenedaṁ kuputreṇa hataṁ me kulamuttamam

That Dadhichi, esteemed by the virtuous, said again and again, "By this wicked son of mine, my excellent lineage has been destroyed."

Verse 35 (shiva.kotirudra.13.35)

sa putro’pi hato bhāryāṁ puṁścalīmuktavāndrutam paścāttāpamanuprāpya svapitrā paribhartsitaḥ

That afflicted son too swiftly cast off his unchaste wife; having felt remorse, and being severely rebuked by his own father —

Verse 36 (shiva.kotirudra.13.36)

tatpitrā girijā tatra pūjitā vidhibhirvaraiḥ suyatnato mahābhaktyā svaputrasukhahetave

— his father then, for the sake of his son's welfare, worshipped Girija there with excellent rites, with great effort and great devotion.

Verse 37 (shiva.kotirudra.13.37)

sudarśano’pi girijāṁ pūjayāmāsa ca svayam caṇḍīpūjanamārgeṇa mahābhaktyā śubhaiḥ stavaiḥ

Sudarshana too himself worshipped Girija, by the method of Chandi-worship, with great devotion and auspicious hymns.

Verse 38 (shiva.kotirudra.13.38)

evaṁ tau pitṛputrau hi nānopāyaiḥ subhaktitaḥ prasannāṁ cakraturdevīṁ girijāṁ bhaktavatsalām

Thus that father and son, by various means and with true devotion, made pleased the goddess Girija, who is affectionate to her devotees.

Verse 39 (shiva.kotirudra.13.39)

tayoḥ sevāprabhāveṇa prasannā caṇḍikā tadā sudarśanaṁ ca putratve cakāra girijā mune

O sage, by the power of their service, Chandika became pleased, and Girija then made Sudarshana her own son.

Verse 40 (shiva.kotirudra.13.40)

śivaṁ prasādayāmāsa putrārthe caṇḍikā svayam kruddhākruddhā punaścaṇḍī tatputrasya prasannadhīḥ

Chandika herself then propitiated Shiva for the sake of her new son; Chandi, alternately angered and appeased, was at last well-disposed in mind toward her son.

Verse 41 (shiva.kotirudra.13.41)

athājñāya prasannaṁ taṁ maheśaṁ vṛṣabhadhvajam namaskṛtya svayaṁ tasya hyutsaṅge taṁ nyaveśayat

Then, learning that the Bull-Bannered Mahesha was pleased, she herself bowed to him and placed Sudarshana upon his own lap.

Verse 42 (shiva.kotirudra.13.42)

ghṛtasnānaṁ taścakre putrasya girijā svayam trirāvṛttopavītaṁ ca granthinaikena saṁyutam

Girija herself then performed the clarified-butter bath for her son, and invested him with the sacred thread, thrice-wound, joined with a single knot.

Verse 43 (shiva.kotirudra.13.43)

sudarśanāya putrāya dadau prītyā tadāmbikā uddiśya śivagāyatrīṁ ṣoḍaśākṣarasaṁyutām

Then the Mother, with love, gave to her son Sudarshana the sixteen-syllabled Shiva-gayatri, directing it to him.

Verse 44 (shiva.kotirudra.13.44)

tadoṁ namaḥ śivāyeti śrīśabdapūrvakāya ca vārānṣoḍaśa saṅkalpapūjāṁ kuryādayaṁ baṭuḥ

Then, saying "Om Namah Shivaya" preceded by the word "Shri," this batuka should perform, sixteen times, the resolve-worship.

Verse 45 (shiva.kotirudra.13.45)

āsnānādipraṇāmāntaṁ pūjayanvṛṣabhadhvajam mantravāditrapūjābhiḥ sarṣīṇāṁ sannidhau tathā

Worshipping the Bull-Bannered Lord from the initial bath through to the final prostration, with mantras, musical instruments, and offerings, in the presence of the sages —

Verse 46 (shiva.kotirudra.13.46)

nāmamantrānanekāṁśca pāṭhayāmāsa vai tadā uvāca suprasannātmā caṇḍikā ca śivastathā

— she then had him recite many name-mantras; and Chandika, her mind well pleased, and Shiva likewise, spoke.

Verse 47 (shiva.kotirudra.13.47)

madarpitaṁ ca yatkiñciddhanadhānyādikaṁ tathā tatsarvaṁ ca tvayā grāhyaṁ na doṣāya bhaviṣyati

Whatever wealth, grain and the like is offered to me — all of that is to be received by you; it shall bring no fault.

Verse 48 (shiva.kotirudra.13.48)

mama kṛtye bhavānmukhyo devīkṛtye viśeṣataḥ ghṛtatailādikaṁ sarvaṁ tvayā grāhyaṁ madarpitam

In my rites you are foremost, and especially in the goddess's rites; all the clarified butter, oil, and the like offered to me are to be received by you.

Verse 49 (shiva.kotirudra.13.49)

prājāpatyaṁ bhavedyarhiṁ tarhyeko hi bhavānbhavet tadā pūjā ca sampūrṇānyathā sarvā ca niṣphalā

Whenever a prajapatya rite, a communal ritual-feast, is held, you alone must be present at it; only then is the worship complete — otherwise all of it is fruitless.

Verse 50 (shiva.kotirudra.13.50)

tilakaṁ vartulaṁ kāryaṁ snānaṁ kāryaṁ sadā tvayā śivasandhyā ca kartavyā gāyatrī ca tadīyakā

You must always wear a round tilaka mark, and always bathe; you must perform the Shiva-sandhya rite and its own gayatri.

Verse 51 (shiva.kotirudra.13.51)

matsevāṁ prathamaṁ kṛtvā kāryamanyatkulocitam evaṁ kṛte’khile bhadraṁ doṣāḥ kṣāntā mayā tava

Having performed my service first, other duties befitting your family may be done; doing so, all shall be well — your faults have been forgiven by me.

Verse 52 (shiva.kotirudra.13.52)

sūta uvāca ityuktvā tasya putrāśca catvāro baṭukāstadā abhiṣiktāścaturdikṣu śivena paramātmanā

Suta said: Having said this, his four sons then, as batukas, were consecrated in the four directions by Shiva, the Supreme Self.

Verse 53 (shiva.kotirudra.13.53)

caṇḍī caivātmanikaṭe putraṁ sthāpya sudarśanam tatputrānprerayāmāsa varāndattvā hyanekaśaḥ

And Chandi, having placed her son Sudarshana near herself, dispatched the other sons, having granted them many boons.

Verse 54 (shiva.kotirudra.13.54)

devyuvāca ubhayorvyūhayormadhye baṭuko yo bhavenmama tasya syādvijayo nityaṁ nātra kāryā vicāraṇā

The goddess said: Between two opposing armies, whichever batuka belongs to me — for him there shall always be victory; of this there should be no doubt.

Verse 55 (shiva.kotirudra.13.55)

bhavāṁśca pūjito yena tenaivāhaṁ prapūjitā kartavyaṁ hi bhavadbhiśca svīyaṁ karma sadā suta

By whomever you are worshipped, by that very person I too am worshipped; therefore, O son, you must always perform your own proper duty.

Verse 56 (shiva.kotirudra.13.56)

sūta uvāca evaṁ tasmai varā dattāḥ saputrāya mahātmane sudarśanāya kṛpayā śivābhyāṁ jagatāṁ kṛte

Suta said: Thus boons were given, together with his sons, to that great-souled Sudarshana, out of grace, by Shiva and Shiva, for the sake of the world.

Verse 57 (shiva.kotirudra.13.57)

śivābhyāṁ sthāpitā yasmāttasmātte baṭukāḥ smṛtāḥ tapobhraṣṭā yato jātāḥ smṛtāstasmāttapo’dhamāḥ

Because they were established by Shiva and Shiva, they are called "batukas"; and because they arose from a fall from tapas, they are also called "tapo'dhamas," lowest in austerity.

Verse 58 (shiva.kotirudra.13.58)

śivayoḥ kṛpayā sarve vistāraṁ bahudhā gatāḥ teṣāṁ ca prathamā pūjā mahāpūjā mahātmanaḥ

By the grace of Shiva and Shiva, all of them spread out and multiplied greatly; and the very first worship offered to them is a great worship of the great-souled ones.

Verse 59 (shiva.kotirudra.13.59)

tena yāvatkṛtā naiva pūjā vai śaṅkarasya ca tāvatpūjā na karttavyā kṛtā cenna śubhāpi sā

As long as their worship has not been performed, Shankara's own worship should not be performed; if performed without theirs first, it is not even auspicious.

Verse 60 (shiva.kotirudra.13.60)

śubhaṁ vāpyaśubhaṁ vāpi baṭukaṁ na parityajet prājāpatye ca bhojye vai baṭureko viśiṣyate

Whether the occasion is auspicious or inauspicious, one should never neglect the batuka; at the prajapatya feast, the batuka alone is given special distinction.

Verse 61 (shiva.kotirudra.13.61)

śivayośca tathā kārye viśeṣo’tra pradṛśyate tadeva śṛṇu suprājña yathāhaṁ vacmi te’nagha

And in the matter of Shiva and Shiva themselves, a special instance of this is seen; hear it, O most wise and sinless one, just as I relate it to you.

Verse 62 (shiva.kotirudra.13.62)

tasyaiva nagare rājño bhadrasya nityabhojane prājāpatyasya niyame hyandhakeśasamīpataḥ

In the very city of that righteous king, in the daily feeding rite, in the observance of the prajapatya, near the Andhakesha shrine —

Verse 63 (shiva.kotirudra.13.63)

yajjātamadbhutaṁ vṛttaṁ śivānugrahakāraṇāt śrūyatāṁ tacca suprītyā kathayāmi yathāśrutam

— an amazing event took place, by the working of Shiva's grace; hear it with pleasure — I shall tell it as I have heard it.

Verse 64 (shiva.kotirudra.13.64)

dhvaja ekaśca tadrājñe dattastuṣṭena śambhunā proktaśca kṛpayā rājā devadevena tena saḥ

A single banner was given to that king by Shambhu, being pleased; and that king was addressed with grace by that god of gods.

Verse 65 (shiva.kotirudra.13.65)

prātaśca badhyatāṁ rājandhvajo rātrau patiṣyati mama tvevaṁ ca sampūrṇe prājāpatye tathā punaḥ

"O king, let the banner be hoisted every morning; it will fall at night. This shall be so as long as my prajapatya rite is fully and duly completed."

Verse 66 (shiva.kotirudra.13.66)

anyathāyaṁ dhvajo me hi rātrāvapi sthiro bhavet ityuktvāntarhitaḥ śambhū rājñe tuṣṭaḥ kṛpānidhiḥ

"Otherwise, this banner of mine shall remain fixed even at night." Saying this, Shambhu, the treasury of grace, pleased with the king, disappeared.

Verse 67 (shiva.kotirudra.13.67)

tatheti niyamaścāsīttasya rājño mahāmune prājāpatyaṁ kṛtaṁ nityaṁ śivapūjāvidhānataḥ

O great sage, thus this rule was in effect for that king; the prajapatya feast was performed daily, according to the rite of Shiva's worship.

Verse 68 (shiva.kotirudra.13.68)

svayaṁ prātarvivardheta dhvajaḥ sāyaṁ patediti yadi kāryaṁ ca sampūrṇaṁ jātaṁ caiva bhavediha

The banner would itself rise in the morning and fall in the evening — provided the prescribed rite had indeed been fully completed here.

Verse 69 (shiva.kotirudra.13.69)

ekasminsamaye cātra baṭoḥ kāryaṁ purā hyabhūt dhvajaḥ sa patito vai hi brahmabhojaṁ vināpi hi

Once, on this occasion, the duty toward the batuka had not been performed in advance; yet that banner fell, even without the brahmin-feeding having been done.

Verse 70 (shiva.kotirudra.13.70)

dṛṣṭvā tacca tadā tatra pṛṣṭā rājñā ca paṇḍitāḥ bhuñjate brāhmaṇā hyatra notthito vai dhvajastviti

Seeing this, the king then questioned the learned scholars there: "The brahmins are still eating here, and yet the banner has not risen — how is this?"

Verse 71 (shiva.kotirudra.13.71)

kathaṁ ca patitaḥ so’tra brāhmaṇā brūta satyataḥ te pṛṣṭāśca tadā procurbrāhmaṇāḥ paṇḍitottamāḥ

"How, O brahmins, has it fallen here? Tell me truly." Thus questioned, those foremost learned brahmins then spoke.

Verse 72 (shiva.kotirudra.13.72)

brahmabhoje mahārāja baṭuko bhojitaḥ purā caṇḍīputraḥ śivastuṣṭastasmācca patito dhvajaḥ

"O great king, at this brahmin-feast, a batuka — the son of Chandi — was fed beforehand; Shiva was pleased by that, and therefore the banner fell."

Verse 73 (shiva.kotirudra.13.73)

tacchrutvā nṛpatiḥ so’tha janāścānye’pi sarvaśaḥ abhavanvismitāstatra praśaṁsāṁ cakrire tataḥ

Hearing this, that king, and all the other people there as well, became astonished, and then offered praise for the batuka's power.

Verse 74 (shiva.kotirudra.13.74)

evaṁ ca mahimā teṣāṁ vardhitaḥ śaṅkareṇa hi tasmācca baṭukāḥ śreṣṭhāḥ purāvidbhiḥ prakīrtitāḥ

Thus their glory was increased indeed by Shankara; and for this reason the batukas have been proclaimed excellent by those knowing the Puranas.

Verse 75 (shiva.kotirudra.13.75)

śivapūjā tu taiḥ pūrvamuttāryā nānyathā punaḥ anyeṣāṁ nādhikāro’sti śivasya vacanādiha

Shiva's worship must first be concluded through them, and never otherwise; others have no right in this matter, by Shiva's own word.

Verse 76 (shiva.kotirudra.13.76)

uttāraṇaṁ ca kāryaṁ vai pūjā pūrṇā bhavatviti etāvadeva teṣāṁ tu kāryaṁ nānyattathaiva ca

This concluding rite must be performed so that the worship becomes complete; this alone is their function, and nothing else besides.

Verse 77 (shiva.kotirudra.13.77)

etatsarvaṁ samākhyātaṁ yatpṛṣṭaṁ ca munīśvarāḥ yacchrutvā śivapūjāyāḥ phalaṁ prāpnoti vai naraḥ

O lords of sages, all this that was asked has now been told; hearing it, a man indeed obtains the fruit of Shiva's worship.
