The Second Jyotirlinga Named Mallikarjuna

Verse 1 (shiva.kotirudra.15.1)

सूत उवाच । अतः परं प्रवक्ष्यामि मल्लिकार्जुनसम्भवम् । यं श्रुत्वा भक्तिमान्धीमान्सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥ 15.1 ॥

sūta uvāca ataḥ paraṁ pravakṣyāmi mallikārjunasambhavam yaṁ śrutvā bhaktimāndhīmānsarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate

Suta said: Now I shall relate the origin of Mallikarjuna, hearing which a devoted and wise man is freed from all sins.

Verse 2 (shiva.kotirudra.15.2)

पूर्वं च कथितं यच्च तत्पुनः कथयाम्यहम् । कुमारचरितं दिव्यं सर्वपापविनाशनम् ॥ 15.2 ॥

pūrvaṁ ca kathitaṁ yacca tatpunaḥ kathayāmyaham kumāracaritaṁ divyaṁ sarvapāpavināśanam

That which was told before, I shall tell again — the divine story of Kumara, destroyer of all sin.

Verse 3 (shiva.kotirudra.15.3)

यदा पृथ्वीं समाक्रम्य कैलासं पुनरागतः । कुमारः स शिवापुत्रस्तारकारिर्महाबलः ॥ 15.3 ॥

yadā pṛthvīṁ samākramya kailāsaṁ punarāgataḥ kumāraḥ sa śivāputrastārakārirmahābalaḥ

When, having conquered the earth, that mighty son of Shiva, the slayer of Taraka, Kumara, returned again to Kailasa —

Verse 4 (shiva.kotirudra.15.4)

तदा सुरर्षिरागत्य सर्वं वृत्तं जगाद ह । गणेश्वरविवाहादि भ्रामयंस्तं स्वबुद्धितः ॥ 15.4 ॥

tadā surarṣirāgatya sarvaṁ vṛttaṁ jagāda ha gaṇeśvaravivāhādi bhrāmayaṁstaṁ svabuddhitaḥ

— then the divine sage came and related the whole event, namely of Ganesha's marriage and the like, confusing him according to his own design.

Verse 5 (shiva.kotirudra.15.5)

तच्छ्रुत्वा स कुमारो हि प्रणम्य पितरौ च तौ । जगाम पर्वतं क्रौञ्चं पितृभ्यां वारितोऽपि हि ॥ 15.5 ॥

tacchrutvā sa kumāro hi praṇamya pitarau ca tau jagāma parvataṁ krauñcaṁ pitṛbhyāṁ vārito’pi hi

Hearing this, Kumara, having bowed to his two parents, went to Mount Krauncha, even though restrained by them.

Verse 6 (shiva.kotirudra.15.6)

कुमारस्य वियोगेन तन्माता गिरिजा यदा । दुःखितासीत्तदा शम्भुस्तामुवाच सुबोधकृत् ॥ 15.6 ॥

kumārasya viyogena tanmātā girijā yadā duḥkhitāsīttadā śambhustāmuvāca subodhakṛt

When his mother Girija became grief-stricken by separation from Kumara, Shambhu, who gives good counsel, then spoke to her.

Verse 7 (shiva.kotirudra.15.7)

कथं प्रिये दुःखितासि न दुःखं कुरु पार्वति । आयास्यति सुतः सुभ्रूस्त्यज्यतां दुःखमुत्कटम् ॥ 15.7 ॥

kathaṁ priye duḥkhitāsi na duḥkhaṁ kuru pārvati āyāsyati sutaḥ subhrūstyajyatāṁ duḥkhamutkaṭam

"Why, O beloved, are you grieving? Do not grieve, Parvati. Our son will return, O fair-browed one; let this intense sorrow be set aside."

Verse 8 (shiva.kotirudra.15.8)

सा यदा च न तं मेने पार्वती दुःखिता भृशम् । तदा च प्रेषितास्तत्र शङ्करेण सुरर्षयः ॥ 15.8 ॥

sā yadā ca na taṁ mene pārvatī duḥkhitā bhṛśam tadā ca preṣitāstatra śaṅkareṇa surarṣayaḥ

When Parvati, exceedingly grieved, would not accept this, Shankara then sent the gods and sages there to fetch Kumara.

Verse 9 (shiva.kotirudra.15.9)

देवाश्च ऋषयः सर्वे सगणा हि मुदान्विताः । कुमारानयनार्थं वै तत्र जग्मुः सुबुद्धयः ॥ 15.9 ॥

devāśca ṛṣayaḥ sarve sagaṇā hi mudānvitāḥ kumārānayanārthaṁ vai tatra jagmuḥ subuddhayaḥ

All the gods and sages, together with their hosts, filled with joy, those wise ones went there in order to bring Kumara back.

Verse 10 (shiva.kotirudra.15.10)

तत्र गत्वा च ते सर्वे कुमारं सुप्रणम्य च । विज्ञाप्य बहुधाप्येनं प्रार्थनां चक्रुरादरात् ॥ 15.10 ॥

tatra gatvā ca te sarve kumāraṁ supraṇamya ca vijñāpya bahudhāpyenaṁ prārthanāṁ cakrurādarāt

Going there, all of them, having duly bowed to Kumara, and having entreated him in many ways, made their request to him with reverence.

Verse 11 (shiva.kotirudra.15.11)

देवादिप्रार्थनां तां च शिवाज्ञासङ्कुलां गुरुः । न मेने स कुमारो हि महाहङ्कारविह्वलः ॥ 15.11 ॥

devādiprārthanāṁ tāṁ ca śivājñāsaṅkulāṁ guruḥ na mene sa kumāro hi mahāhaṅkāravihvalaḥ

That great one, Kumara, overcome by great pride, did not accede to that entreaty of the gods and others, though it carried Shiva's own command.

Verse 12 (shiva.kotirudra.15.12)

ततश्च पुनरावृत्य सर्वे ते हि शिवान्तिकम् । स्वं स्वं स्थानं गता नत्वा प्राप्य शङ्करशासनम् ॥ 15.12 ॥

tataśca punarāvṛtya sarve te hi śivāntikam svaṁ svaṁ sthānaṁ gatā natvā prāpya śaṅkaraśāsanam

Then all of them, turning back, went to Shiva's presence, and, after bowing and receiving Shankara's instruction, each went to his own abode.

Verse 13 (shiva.kotirudra.15.13)

तदा च गिरिजा देवी विरहं पुत्रसम्भवम् । शम्भुश्च परमं दुःखं प्राप तस्मिन्ननागते ॥ 15.13 ॥

tadā ca girijā devī virahaṁ putrasambhavam śambhuśca paramaṁ duḥkhaṁ prāpa tasminnanāgate

Then the goddess Girija, and Shambhu too, felt the supreme grief born of separation from their son, since he had not returned.

Verse 14 (shiva.kotirudra.15.14)

अथो सुदुःखितौ दीनौ लोकाचारकरौ तदा । जग्मतुस्तत्र सुस्नेहात्स्वपुत्रो यत्र संस्थितः ॥ 15.14 ॥

atho suduḥkhitau dīnau lokācārakarau tadā jagmatustatra susnehātsvaputro yatra saṁsthitaḥ

Then, greatly grieved, humbled, and following worldly custom, both of them went, out of great affection, to the place where their son was residing.

Verse 15 (shiva.kotirudra.15.15)

स पुत्रश्च कुमाराख्यः पित्रोरागमनं गिरेः । ज्ञात्वा दूरं गतोऽस्नेहाद्योजनत्रयमेव च ॥ 15.15 ॥

sa putraśca kumārākhyaḥ pitrorāgamanaṁ gireḥ jñātvā dūraṁ gato’snehādyojanatrayameva ca

That son, named Kumara, learning of his parents' approach to the mountain, out of coldness went far away — a full three yojanas distant.

Verse 16 (shiva.kotirudra.15.16)

क्रौञ्चे च पर्वते दूरं गते तस्मिन्स्वपुत्रके । तौ च तत्र समासीनौ ज्योतीरूपं समाश्रितौ ॥ 15.16 ॥

krauñce ca parvate dūraṁ gate tasminsvaputrake tau ca tatra samāsīnau jyotīrūpaṁ samāśritau

When that son of theirs had gone far off on Mount Krauncha, those two, Shiva and Parvati, remained seated there, taking on the form of light.

Verse 17 (shiva.kotirudra.15.17)

पुत्रस्नेहातुरौ तौ वै शिवौ पर्वणि पर्वणि । दर्शनार्थं कुमारस्य स्वपुत्रस्य हि गच्छतः ॥ 15.17 ॥

putrasnehāturau tau vai śivau parvaṇi parvaṇi darśanārthaṁ kumārasya svaputrasya hi gacchataḥ

Those two, Shiva and Shiva, tormented by love for their son, go on each sacred day of the fortnight to behold their own son, Kumara.

Verse 18 (shiva.kotirudra.15.18)

अमावास्यादिने शम्भुः स्वयं गच्छति तत्र ह । पौर्णमासीदिने तत्र पार्वती गच्छति ध्रुवम् ॥ 15.18 ॥

amāvāsyādine śambhuḥ svayaṁ gacchati tatra ha paurṇamāsīdine tatra pārvatī gacchati dhruvam

On the day of the new moon, Shambhu himself goes there; and on the day of the full moon, Parvati indeed goes there without fail.

Verse 19 (shiva.kotirudra.15.19)

तद्दिनं हि समारभ्य मल्लिकार्जुनसम्भवम् । लिङ्गं चैव शिवस्यैकं प्रसिद्धं भुवनत्रये ॥ 15.19 ॥

taddinaṁ hi samārabhya mallikārjunasambhavam liṅgaṁ caiva śivasyaikaṁ prasiddhaṁ bhuvanatraye

From that day onward, the linga known as Mallikarjuna came into being — one linga of Shiva renowned throughout the three worlds.

Verse 20 (shiva.kotirudra.15.20)

तल्लिङ्गं यः समीक्षेत स सर्वैः किल्बिषैरपि । मुच्यते नात्र सन्देहः सर्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात् ॥ 15.20 ॥

talliṅgaṁ yaḥ samīkṣeta sa sarvaiḥ kilbiṣairapi mucyate nātra sandehaḥ sarvānkāmānavāpnuyāt

Whoever beholds that linga is freed from all sins as well — of this there is no doubt — and obtains all his desires.

Verse 21 (shiva.kotirudra.15.21)

दुःखं च दूरतो याति सुखमात्यन्तिकं लभेत् । जननीगर्भसम्भूतं कष्टं नाप्नोति वै पुनः ॥ 15.21 ॥

duḥkhaṁ ca dūrato yāti sukhamātyantikaṁ labhet jananīgarbhasambhūtaṁ kaṣṭaṁ nāpnoti vai punaḥ

Sorrow departs far away, and he obtains supreme happiness; he does not again undergo the suffering born of a mother's womb.

Verse 22 (shiva.kotirudra.15.22)

धनधान्यसमृद्धिश्च प्रतिष्ठारोग्यमेव च । अभीष्टफलसिद्धिश्च जायते नात्र संशयः ॥ 15.22 ॥

dhanadhānyasamṛddhiśca pratiṣṭhārogyameva ca abhīṣṭaphalasiddhiśca jāyate nātra saṁśayaḥ

Abundance of wealth and grain, status, and health, and the fulfilment of desired ends — all arise; of this there is no doubt.

Verse 23 (shiva.kotirudra.15.23)

ज्योतिर्लिङ्गं द्वितीयं च प्रोक्तं मल्लिकसंज्ञितम् । दर्शनात्सर्वसुखदं कथितं लोकहेतवे ॥ 15.23 ॥

jyotirliṅgaṁ dvitīyaṁ ca proktaṁ mallikasaṁjñitam darśanātsarvasukhadaṁ kathitaṁ lokahetave

Thus the second Jyotirlinga, called Mallika, has been told — bestower of every happiness through its sight, related here for the welfare of the world.
