Kotirudra Samhita · Chapter 29
The Disturbance Caused by the Rakshasas of Darukavana
Verse 1 (shiva.kotirudra.29.1)
sūta uvāca athātaḥ sampravakṣyāmi nāgeśākhyaṁ parātmanaḥ jyotīrūpaṁ yathā jātaṁ paramaṁ liṅgamuttamam
Suta said: Now, next, I shall relate how the supreme, excellent linga of the Supreme Self, named Nagesha, came to be in the form of light.
Verse 2 (shiva.kotirudra.29.2)
dārukā rākṣasī kācitpārvatīvaradarpitā dārukaśca patistasyā babhūva balavattaraḥ
There was a certain rakshasi named Daruka, made proud by a boon of Parvati; and Daruka, her husband, was exceedingly powerful.
Verse 3 (shiva.kotirudra.29.3)
bahubhī rākṣasaistatra cakāra kadanaṁ satām yajñadhvaṁsaṁ ca lokānāṁ dharmadhvaṁsaṁ tadākarot
With many rakshasas, he wrought havoc there upon the virtuous, destroying the sacrifices of the worlds, and thereby destroying righteousness.
Verse 4 (shiva.kotirudra.29.4)
paścime sāgare tasya vanaṁ sarvasamṛddhimat yojanānāṁ ṣoḍaśabhirvistṛtaṁ sarvato diśam
In the western ocean was his forest, abounding in all riches, extending sixteen yojanas in every direction.
Verse 5 (shiva.kotirudra.29.5)
dārukā svavilāsārthaṁ yatra gacchati tadvanam bhūmyā ca tarubhistatra sarvopakaraṇairyutam
That forest, to which Daruka would go for her own pleasure, was furnished, with its land and its trees, with every kind of amenity.
Verse 6 (shiva.kotirudra.29.6)
dārukāyai dadau devī tadvanasyāvalokanam prayāti tadvanaṁ sā hi patyā saha yadṛcchayā
The goddess had given Daruka charge over that forest; she would go to that forest, together with her husband, at her own will.
Verse 7 (shiva.kotirudra.29.7)
tatra sthitvā tadā so’pi sarveṣāṁ ca bhayaṁ dadau dāruko rākṣasaḥ patnyā tayā dārukayā saha
Dwelling there, the rakshasa Daruka, together with his wife Daruka, gave fear to all.
Verse 8 (shiva.kotirudra.29.8)
te sarve pīḍitā lokā aurvasya śaraṇaṁ yayuḥ natvā prītyā viśeṣeṇa tamūcurnatamastakāḥ
All those afflicted people went for refuge to Aurva; bowing to him with special love, with heads bent low, they spoke to him.
Verse 9 (shiva.kotirudra.29.9)
lokā ūcuḥ maharṣe śaraṇaṁ dehi no cedduṣṭaiśca māritāḥ sarvaṁ kartuṁ samartho’si tejasā dīptimānasi
The people said: "O great sage, give us refuge, or else we shall be killed by these wicked ones. You are able to do anything; you are radiant with your own splendour."
Verse 10 (shiva.kotirudra.29.10)
pṛthvyāṁ na vartate kaścittvāṁ vinā śaraṇaṁ ca naḥ yāmo yasya samīpe tu sthitvā sukhamavāpnumaḥ
"On this earth, there is no one besides you to be our refuge, in whose presence we might dwell and find happiness."
Verse 11 (shiva.kotirudra.29.11)
tvāṁ dṛṣṭvā rākṣasāḥ sarve palāyante vidūrataḥ tvayi śaivaṁ sadā tejo vibhāti jvalano yathā
"Seeing you, all the rakshasas flee far away; in you the radiance of Shiva ever shines forth like blazing fire."
Verse 12 (shiva.kotirudra.29.12)
sūta uvāca ityevaṁ prārthito lokairaurvo hi munisattamaḥ śocamānaḥ śaraṇyaśca rakṣāyai hi vaco’bravīt
Suta said: Thus entreated by the people, Aurva, that best of sages, grieving for them and being their refuge, spoke words for their protection.
Verse 13 (shiva.kotirudra.29.13)
aurva uvāca pṛthivyāṁ yadi rakṣāṁsi hiṁsyurvai prāṇinastadā svayaṁ prāṇairviyujyeyū rākṣasā balavattarāḥ
Aurva said: "If on this earth the rakshasas should harm living beings, then may those most powerful rakshasas themselves be deprived of their lives."
Verse 14 (shiva.kotirudra.29.14)
yadā yajñāśca hanyeraṁstadā prāṇairviyojitāḥ bhavantu rākṣasāḥ sarve satyametanmayocyate
"Whenever sacrifices are destroyed, then let all the rakshasas be deprived of their lives; this I declare as truth."
Verse 15 (shiva.kotirudra.29.15)
sūta uvāca ityuktvā vacanaṁ tebhyaḥ samāśvāsya prajāḥ punaḥ tapaścakāra vividhamaurvo lokasukhāvahaḥ
Suta said: Having spoken this word, and having again consoled the people, Aurva, the bringer of happiness to the world, performed various austerities.
Verse 16 (shiva.kotirudra.29.16)
devāstadā te vijñāya śāpasya kāraṇaṁ hi tat yuddhāya ca samudyogaṁ cakrurdevāribhiḥ saha
Then the gods, having learned the reason for that curse, made preparation for war against the enemies of the gods.
Verse 17 (shiva.kotirudra.29.17)
sarvaiścaiva prayatnaiśca nānāyudhadharāḥ surāḥ sarve śakrādayastatra yuddhārthaṁ samupāgatāḥ
With every effort, the gods, bearing various weapons, all of them beginning with Indra, gathered there for battle.
Verse 18 (shiva.kotirudra.29.18)
tāndṛṣṭvā rākṣasāstatra vicāre tatparāḥ punaḥ babhūvuste’khilā duṣṭā mitho ye yatra saṁsthitāḥ
Seeing them, the rakshasas there, all those wicked ones who were gathered together, again fell to deliberating among themselves.
Verse 19 (shiva.kotirudra.29.19)
rākṣasā ūcuḥ kiṁ kartavyaṁ kva gantavyaṁ saṅkaṭaṁ samupāgatāḥ yuddhyate mriyate caiva yuddhyate na vihanyate
The rakshasas said: "What is to be done, where should we go — we have fallen into great danger. If we fight, we die; if we do not fight, we are destroyed anyway."
Verse 20 (shiva.kotirudra.29.20)
tathaiva sthīyate cedvai bhakṣyate kiṁ parasparam duḥkhaṁ hi sarvathā jātaṁ ka enaṁ vinivārayet
"And if we simply remain as we are, shall we then devour one another? This calamity has come upon us in every way — who can avert it?"
Verse 21 (shiva.kotirudra.29.21)
sūta uvāca vicāryeti ca te tatra dārukādyāśca rākṣasāḥ upāyaṁ na vijānanto duḥkhaṁ prāptāḥ sadā hi vai
Suta said: Having thus deliberated, those rakshasas there, beginning with Daruka, not knowing any remedy, remained ever in sorrow.
Verse 22 (shiva.kotirudra.29.22)
dārukā rākṣasī cāpi jñātvā duḥkhaṁ samāgatam bhavānyāśca varaṁ taṁ ca kathayāmāsa sā tadā
The rakshasi Daruka too, learning of the sorrow that had befallen them, then spoke of that boon of Bhavani's.
Verse 23 (shiva.kotirudra.29.23)
dārukovāca mayā hyārādhitā pūrvaṁ bhavapatnī varaṁ dadau vanaṁ gaccha nijaiḥ sārdhaṁ yatra gantuṁ tvamicchasi
Daruka said: "Formerly I worshipped the wife of Shiva, and she granted me a boon: 'Go, together with your own people, to whatever forest you wish to go.'"
Verse 24 (shiva.kotirudra.29.24)
tadvaraśca mayā prāptaḥ kathaṁ duḥkhaṁ viṣahyate jale vanaṁ ca nītvā vai sukhaṁ stheyaṁ tu rākṣasaiḥ
"That boon I have obtained — why then should we endure this sorrow? Let the rakshasas carry the forest into the water and dwell there happily."
Verse 25 (shiva.kotirudra.29.25)
sūta uvāca tasyāstadvacanaṁ śrutvā rākṣasyā harṣamāgatāḥ ūcuḥ sarve mithaste hi rākṣasā nirbhayāstadā
Suta said: Hearing that word of the rakshasi, they became joyful; all the rakshasas, now fearless, spoke among themselves.
Verse 26 (shiva.kotirudra.29.26)
dhanyeyaṁ kṛtakṛtyeyaṁ rājñyā vai jīvitāḥ svayam natvā tasyai ca tatsarvaṁ kathayāmāsurādarāt
"Blessed is she, her purpose is fulfilled — by our queen we have ourselves been given life." Bowing to her, they told her everything with reverence.
Verse 27 (shiva.kotirudra.29.27)
yadi gantuṁ bhavecchaktirgamyatāṁ kiṁ vicāryate tatra gatvā jale devi sukhaṁ sthāsyāma nityaśaḥ
"If we have the power to go, let us go — what is there to deliberate? Having gone there into the water, O goddess, we shall dwell happily forever."
Verse 28 (shiva.kotirudra.29.28)
etasminnantare lokā devaiḥ sārdhaṁ samāgatāḥ yuddhāya vividhairduḥkhaiḥ pīḍitā rākṣasaiḥ purā
Meanwhile the people, who had earlier been afflicted with various sorrows by the rakshasas, gathered together with the gods for battle.
Verse 29 (shiva.kotirudra.29.29)
pīḍitāśca tadā tasyā bhavānyā balamāśritāḥ samagraṁ nagaraṁ nītvā jalasthalasamanvitam
Then that troubled Daruka, taking refuge in the power of Bhavani, carried the entire city, together with its land and structures, into the water.
Verse 30 (shiva.kotirudra.29.30)
jaya jayeti devyāstu stutimuccārya rākṣasī tata uḍḍīyanaṁ kṛtvā sapakṣo girirāḍyathā
Uttering the praise of the goddess, crying "Victory! Victory!", that rakshasi then took flight, like a winged mountain-king.
Verse 31 (shiva.kotirudra.29.31)
samudrasya ca madhye sā saṁsthitā nirbhayā tadā sakalaiḥ parivāraiśca mumudeti śivānugā
In the middle of the ocean she then established herself, fearless, together with her whole retinue, and, being a follower of Shiva, she rejoiced.
Verse 32 (shiva.kotirudra.29.32)
tatra sindhau ca te sthitvā nagare ca vilāsinaḥ rākṣasāśca sukhaṁ prāpurnirbhayāśca vijahrire
There, dwelling in the ocean, in that city, the pleasure-loving rakshasas obtained happiness, and, fearless, sported freely.
Verse 33 (shiva.kotirudra.29.33)
rākṣasāśca pṛthivyāṁ vai nājagmuśca kadācana muneḥ śāpabhayādeva babhramuste cale tadā
The rakshasas never again came upon the earth; out of fear of the sage's curse, they wandered thereafter upon that floating city.
Verse 34 (shiva.kotirudra.29.34)
nauṣu sthitān janānnītvā nagare tatra tāṁstadā cikṣipurbandhanāgāre kāṁścijjaghnustadā hi te
Seizing people who were in boats and bringing them to that city, they cast some into prison, and some they killed.
Verse 35 (shiva.kotirudra.29.35)
yathā yathā punaḥ pīḍāṁ cakruste rākṣasāstadā tatra sthitā bhavānyāśca varadānācca nirbhayāḥ
In whatever ways those rakshasas continued to inflict harm, they did so being fearless there, dwelling by the power of Bhavani's boon.
Verse 36 (shiva.kotirudra.29.36)
yathā pūrvaṁ sthale loke bhayaṁ cāsīnnirantaram tathā bhayaṁ jale teṣāmāsīnnityaṁ munīśvarāḥ
Just as formerly there had been constant fear among the people on land, so now, O lords of sages, there was ever fear among them upon the sea.
Verse 37 (shiva.kotirudra.29.37)
kadācidrākṣasī sā ca niḥsṛtā nagarājjale ruddhvā mārgaṁ sthitā lokapīḍārthaṁ dharaṇau ca hi
Once that rakshasi went out from the city into the sea, and, blocking the way, stationed herself on the ground, to torment people.
Verse 38 (shiva.kotirudra.29.38)
etasminnantare tatra nāvo bahutarāḥ śubhāḥ āgatā bahudhā tatra sarvato lokasaṁvṛtāḥ
Meanwhile, many auspicious boats, crowded with people from all directions, arrived there in great number.
Verse 39 (shiva.kotirudra.29.39)
tā nāvaśca tadā dṛṣṭvā harṣaṁ samprāpya rākṣasāḥ drutaṁ gatvā hi tatrasthānvegātsandadhrire khalāḥ
Seeing those boats, the rakshasas, filled with joy, quickly went there, and those wicked ones swiftly seized those who were in them.
Verse 40 (shiva.kotirudra.29.40)
ājagmurnagaraṁ te ca tānādāya mahābalāḥ cikṣipurbandhanāgāre baddhvā hi nigaḍairdṛḍhaiḥ
Those mighty ones brought them to the city, and, having bound them with strong fetters, cast them into prison.
Verse 41 (shiva.kotirudra.29.41)
baddhāste nigaḍairlokāḥ saṁsthitā bandhanālaye atīva duḥkhamājagmurbhartsitāste muhurmuhuḥ
Those people, bound in fetters, remained in the prison-house; they fell into the deepest sorrow, being repeatedly abused.
Verse 42 (shiva.kotirudra.29.42)
teṣāṁ madhye ca yo’dhīśaḥ sa vaiśyaḥ supriyābhidhaḥ śivapriyaḥ śubhācāraḥ śaivaścāsītsadātanaḥ
Among them was their leader, a merchant named Supriya, dear to Shiva, of virtuous conduct, and an ever-devoted Shaiva.
Verse 43 (shiva.kotirudra.29.43)
vinā ca śivapūjāṁ vai na tiṣṭhati kadācana sarvathā śivadharmā hi bhasmarudrākṣabhūṣaṇaḥ
He never once remained without worshipping Shiva; he was ever devoted wholly to Shiva's faith, adorned with ash and rudraksha beads.
Verse 44 (shiva.kotirudra.29.44)
yadi pūjā na jātā cenna bhunakti tadā tu saḥ atastatrāpi vaiśyo’sau cakāra śivapūjanam
If the worship had not been performed, then he would not eat; and so, even there in prison, that merchant performed the worship of Shiva.
Verse 45 (shiva.kotirudra.29.45)
kārāgṛhagataḥ so’pi bahūṁścāśikṣayattadā śivamantraṁ ca pūjāṁ ca pārthivīmṛṣisattamāḥ
Even while in prison, he taught many others, O best of sages, the mantra of Shiva and the worship of the clay linga.
Verse 46 (shiva.kotirudra.29.46)
te sarve ca tadā tatra śivapūjāṁ svakāmadām cakrire vidhivattatra yathādṛṣṭaṁ yathāśrutam
All of them then performed there the worship of Shiva, which grants one's desires, duly, according to what they had seen and heard.
Verse 47 (shiva.kotirudra.29.47)
kecittatra sthitā dhyāne baddhvāsanamanuttamam mānasīṁ śivapūjāṁ ca keciccakrurmudānvitāḥ
Some there sat fixed in meditation, in the highest posture; others, filled with joy, performed a mental worship of Shiva.
Verse 48 (shiva.kotirudra.29.48)
tadādhīśena tatraiva pratyakṣaṁ śivapūjanam kṛtaṁ ca pārthivasyaiva vidhānena munīśvarāḥ
Then their leader, right there, O lords of sages, performed the manifest worship of Shiva, according to the rite of the clay linga.
Verse 49 (shiva.kotirudra.29.49)
anye ca ye na jānanti vidhānaṁ smaraṇaṁ param namaḥ śivāya mantreṇa dhyāyantaḥ śaṅkaraṁ sthitāḥ
And others, who did not know the full ritual procedure, remained fixed in supreme remembrance, meditating on Shankara with the mantra "Namah Shivaya."
Verse 50 (shiva.kotirudra.29.50)
supriyo nāma yaścāsīdvaiśyavaryaḥ śivapriyaḥ dhyāya~śca manasā tatra cakāra śivapūjanam
He who was named Supriya, that excellent merchant dear to Shiva, meditating with his mind there, performed the worship of Shiva.
Verse 51 (shiva.kotirudra.29.51)
yathoktarūpī śambhuśca pratyakṣaṁ sarvamādade so’pi svayaṁ na jānāti gṛhyate na śivena vai
Shambhu, present in that very form, accepted everything directly; he himself did not realize it, yet it was not left unaccepted by Shiva.
Verse 52 (shiva.kotirudra.29.52)
evaṁ ca kriyamāṇasya vaiśyasya śivapūjanam vyatīyustatra ṣaṇmāsā nirvighnena munīśvarāḥ
Thus, while the merchant continued performing the worship of Shiva, six months passed there without hindrance, O lords of sages.
Verse 53 (shiva.kotirudra.29.53)
ataḥ paraṁ ca yajjātaṁ caritaṁ śaśimaulinaḥ tacchṛṇudhvamṛṣiśreṣṭhāḥ sāvadhānena cetasā
Hear now, O best of sages, with attentive mind, what happened next in the story of him who bears the crescent moon on his crown.
