Uma Samhita · Chapter 10
The Sufferings Endured on the Path to Hell
Verse 1 (shiva.uma.10.1)
sanatkumāra uvāca mithyāgamaṁ pravṛttastu dvijihvākhyaṁ ca gacchati jihvārdhakośavistīrṇahalaistīkṣṇaiḥ prapīḍyate
Sanatkumara said: One who devotes himself to spreading false doctrine goes to the hell called Dvijihva ("Double-Tongued"), where he is tormented by sharp ploughshares as wide as half the sheath of his own tongue.
Verse 2 (shiva.uma.10.2)
nirbhartsayati yaḥ krūro mātaraṁ pitaraṁ gurum viṣṭhābhiḥ kṛmimiśrābhirmukhamāpūrya hanyate
The cruel man who reviles his mother, father, or teacher has his mouth filled with excrement mixed with worms, and is struck.
Verse 3 (shiva.uma.10.3)
ye śivāyatanārāmavāpīkūpataḍāgakān vidravanti dvijasthānaṁ narāstatra ramanti ca
Those who despoil Shiva's temples, gardens, step-wells, wells, and tanks — the sacred domains of the twice-born — and instead take their pleasure there,
Verse 4 (shiva.uma.10.4)
kāmāyodvartanābhyaṅga snānapānāmbubhojanam krīḍanaṁ maithunaṁ dyūtamācaranti madoddhatāḥ
intoxicated with pride, engage there in rubbing on unguents, oil-anointing, bathing, drinking water, eating, sporting, sexual union, and gambling.
Verse 5 (shiva.uma.10.5)
pecire vividhairdhorairikṣuyantrādipīḍanaiḥ nirayāgniṣu pacyante yāvadābhūtasamplavam
They are cooked with manifold terrible torments — such as being crushed like sugarcane in a press — burning in the fires of hell until the dissolution of the universe.
Verse 6 (shiva.uma.10.6)
tena tenaiva rūpeṇa tāḍyante pāradārikāḥ gāḍhamāliṅgya te nārīṁ sutaptāṁ lohanirmitām
Adulterers are punished in that very manner corresponding to their offense; they are made to clasp tightly an intensely heated iron effigy of a woman.
Verse 7 (shiva.uma.10.7)
pūrvākārāśca puruṣāḥ prajvalanti samantataḥ duścāriṇīṁ striyaṁ gāḍhamāliṅganti rudanti ca
Those men blaze up entirely on every side; and likewise unchaste women, tightly embracing an effigy of a wicked man, weep aloud.
Verse 8 (shiva.uma.10.8)
ye śṛṇvanti satāṁ nindāṁ teṣāṁ karṇaprapūraṇam agnivarṇairayaḥkīlaistaptaistāmrādinirmitaiḥ
Those who listen to slander of virtuous people have their ears filled with fire-colored, red-hot nails made of iron, copper, and the like.
Verse 9 (shiva.uma.10.9)
trapusīsārakūṭādbhiḥ kṣīreṇa ca punaḥpunaḥ sutaptatīkṣṇatailena vajralepena vā punaḥ
And again and again with molten tin, lead, and alloy, with boiling milk, or with intensely heated sharp oil, or again with adamantine cement.
Verse 10 (shiva.uma.10.10)
kramādāpūrya karṇāṁstu narakeṣu ca yātanāḥ anukrameṇa sarveṣu bhavantyetāḥ samantataḥ
Thus, in due order, their ears are filled up; these torments occur in sequence throughout all the hells, on every side.
Verse 11 (shiva.uma.10.11)
sarvendriyāṇāmapyevaṁ kramātpāpena yātanāḥ bhavanti ghorāḥ pratyekaṁ śarīreṇa kṛtena ca
In this same way, terrible torments befall each of the senses in due order, according to the sin — each inflicted through the very organ by which the deed was done.
Verse 12 (shiva.uma.10.12)
sparśadoṣeṇa ye mūḍhāḥ spṛśanti ca parastriyam teṣāṁ karo'gnivarṇābhiḥ pāṁsubhiḥ pūryate bhṛśam
Those foolish men who, out of the fault of lustful touch, touch another man's wife — their hand is filled intensely with fire-colored ashes.
Verse 13 (shiva.uma.10.13)
teṣāṁ kṣārādibhiḥ sarvaiḥ śarīramanulipyate yātanāśca mahākaṣṭāḥ sarveṣu narakeṣu ca
Their bodies are smeared over with all manner of caustic substances, and they suffer extremely painful torments throughout all the hells.
Verse 14 (shiva.uma.10.14)
kurvanti pitrorbhṛkuṭiṁ karanetrāṇi ye narāḥ vaktrāṇi teṣāṁ sāntāni kīryante śaṅkubhirdṛḍham
Those men who knit their brows and glare with scowling eyes at their parents have their mouths, together with those very eyes, pierced firmly all over with spikes.
Verse 15 (shiva.uma.10.15)
yairindriyairnarā ye ca vikurvanti parastriyam indriyāṇi ca teṣāṁ vai vikurvanti tathaiva ca
Those men who, by whatever organs, act wrongfully toward another's wife — by those same organs of theirs they are, in just the same way, made to suffer in turn.
Verse 16 (shiva.uma.10.16)
paradārāṁśca paśyanti lubdhāḥ stabdhena cakṣuṣā sūcībhiścāgnivarṇābhisteṣāṁ netraprapūraṇam
Those greedy men who stare fixedly, with unblinking eyes, at other men's wives — their eyes are filled with fire-colored needles.
Verse 17 (shiva.uma.10.17)
kṣārādyaiśca kramātsarvā ihaiva yamayātanāḥ bhavanti muniśārdūla satyaṁ satyaṁ na saṁśayaḥ
O tiger among sages, thus, in due order, with caustic substances and the like, all these torments of Yama truly occur here — this is the truth, the very truth, beyond doubt.
Verse 18 (shiva.uma.10.18)
devāgniguruviprebhyaścānivedya prabhuñjate lohakīlaśataistaptaistajjihvāsyaṁ ca pūryate
Those who eat their food without first offering it to the gods, to fire, to their guru, and to brahmins have their tongue and mouth filled with hundreds of red-hot iron nails.
Verse 19 (shiva.uma.10.19)
ye devārāmapuṣpāṇi lobhātsaṅgṛhya pāṇinā jighranti ca narā bhūyaḥ śirasā dhārayanti ca
Those men who, out of greed, pluck flowers from the gardens of the gods with their hands, repeatedly smell them, and wear them upon their heads,
Verse 20 (shiva.uma.10.20)
āpūryate śirasteṣāṁ taptairlohasya śaṅkubhiḥ nāsikā cātibahulaistataḥ kṣārādibhirbhṛśam
have their heads filled with red-hot iron spikes, and thereafter their nostrils, too, are packed full with copious caustic substances.
Verse 21 (shiva.uma.10.21)
ye nindanti mahātmānaṁ vācakaṁ dharmadeśikam devāgnigurubhaktāṁśca dharmaśāstraṁ ca śāśvatam
Those who revile a great soul, a discourser and teacher of dharma, devotees of gods, fire, and guru, and the eternal scripture of dharma,
Verse 22 (shiva.uma.10.22)
teṣāmurasi kaṇṭhe ca jihvāyāṁ dantasandhiṣu tālunyoṣṭhe nāsikāyāṁ mūrdhni sarvāṅgasandhiṣu
in their chest, throat, tongue, the joints of the teeth, the palate, lips, nose, crown of the head, and every joint of the body,
Verse 23 (shiva.uma.10.23)
agnivarṇāstu taptāśca triśākhā lohaśaṅkavaḥ ākhidyante ca bahuśaḥ sthāneṣveteṣu mudgaraiḥ
fire-colored, red-hot, three-pronged iron spikes are driven in repeatedly with hammers, at all these places.
Verse 24 (shiva.uma.10.24)
tataḥ kṣāreṇa dīptena pūryate hi samantataḥ yātanāśca mahatyo vai śarīrasyāti sarvataḥ
Then they are filled entirely with burning alkali; and thus the whole body, in every part, suffers immense torment.
Verse 25 (shiva.uma.10.25)
aśeṣanarakeṣveva kramanti kramaśaḥ punaḥ ye gṛhṇanti paradravyaṁ padbhyāṁ vipraṁ spṛśanti ca
Those who seize another's wealth, or touch a brahmin with their feet,
Verse 26 (shiva.uma.10.26)
śivopakaraṇaṁ gāṁ ca jñānādilikhitaṁ ca yat hastapādādibhisteṣāmāpūryante samantataḥ
or who defile Shiva's ritual implements, a cow, or the scriptures of sacred knowledge — for them, hands, feet, and the like are filled up on every side, and they pass, one hell after another, through the whole succession without exception.
Verse 27 (shiva.uma.10.27)
narakeṣu ca sarveṣu vicitrā bahuyātanāḥ bhavanti bahuśaḥ kaṣṭāḥ pāṇipādasamudbhavāḥ
And in all the hells there occur manifold, varied torments, exceedingly painful, arising specifically through the hands and feet.
Verse 28 (shiva.uma.10.28)
śivāyatanaparyante devārāmeṣu kutracit samutsṛjanti ye pāpāḥ purīṣaṁ mūtrameva ca
Those sinners who, somewhere near the precincts of Shiva's temple or in the gardens of the gods, relieve themselves of feces or urine,
Verse 29 (shiva.uma.10.29)
teṣāṁ śiśnaṁ savṛṣaṇaṁ cūrṇyate lohamudgaraiḥ sūcībhiragnivarṇābhistathā tvāpūryate punaḥ
have their genitals, along with the testicles, pulverized with iron clubs, and then again pierced through with fire-colored needles.
Verse 30 (shiva.uma.10.30)
tataḥ kṣāreṇa mahatā tīvreṇa ca punaḥ punaḥ drutena pūryate gāḍhaṁ gude śiśne ca dehinaḥ
Then, again and again, that embodied soul's anus and genitals are thoroughly filled with molten, intensely fierce alkali.
Verse 31 (shiva.uma.10.31)
manaḥ sarvendriyāṇāṁ ca yasmādduḥkhaṁ prajāyate dhane satyapi ye dānaṁ na prayacchanti tṛṣṇayā
Owing to which suffering is born for the mind and all the senses — those who, though possessing wealth, do not give charity, out of sheer greed,
Verse 32 (shiva.uma.10.32)
atithiṁ cāvamanyante kāle prāpte gṛhāśrame tasmātte duṣkṛtaṁ prāpya gacchanti niraye'śucau
and who disdain a guest who arrives at their household at the proper time — because of this, having incurred that wicked deed, they go to the foul hell.
Verse 33 (shiva.uma.10.33)
ye'nnaṁ dattvā hi bhuñjanti na śvabhyaḥ saha vāyasaiḥ teṣāṁ ca vivṛtaṁ vaktraṁ kīlakadvayatāḍitam
Those who eat their food without first giving a portion to dogs and crows have their mouths forced open and struck with a pair of spikes.
Verse 34 (shiva.uma.10.34)
kṛmibhiḥ prāṇibhiścograirlohatuṇḍaiśca vāyasaiḥ upadravairbahuvidhairugrairantaḥ prapīḍyate
He is then tormented from within by fierce worms and creatures, by iron-beaked crows, and by manifold violent afflictions.
Verse 35 (shiva.uma.10.35)
śyāmaśca śabalaścaiva yamamārgānurodhakau yau stastābhyāṁ prayacchāmi tau gṛhṇītāmimaṁ balim
"Shyama and Shabala, the two guardians of Yama's path — to them I offer this; may these two accept this offering."
Verse 36 (shiva.uma.10.36)
ye vā varuṇavāyavyā yāmyā nairṛtyavāyasāḥ vāyasāḥ puṇyakarmāṇaste pragṛhṇantu me balim
"Or whichever meritorious crows belong to the quarters of Varuna, Vayu, Yama, and Nirriti — may they accept my offering."
Verse 37 (shiva.uma.10.37)
Those who, having carefully worshipped the goddess Shivā and duly offered oblations into the fire according to rule, give the bali-offering with Shaiva mantras — they do not even set eyes upon Yama;
Verse 38 (shiva.uma.10.38)
paśyanti tridivaṁ yānti tasmāddadyāddinedine maṇḍalaṁ caturasraṁ tu kṛtvā gandhādivāsitam
instead they go to heaven. Therefore one should give this offering every day, having drawn a four-sided mandala, scented with fragrance and the like.
Verse 39 (shiva.uma.10.39)
dhanvantaryarthamīśānyāṁ prācyāmindrāya niḥkṣipet yāmyāṁ yamāya vāruṇyāṁ sudakṣomāya dakṣiṇe
In the northeast, an offering for Dhanvantari; in the east, one should place an offering for Indra; in the south, for Yama; in the west, for Sudaksha and Uma, to the right.
Verse 40 (shiva.uma.10.40)
pitṛbhyastu viniḥkṣipya prācyāmaryamaṇaṁ tataḥ dhātuścaiva vidhātuśca dvāradeśe viniḥkṣipet
Then, having placed an offering for the ancestors, and then in the east for Aryaman, one should place offerings for Dhatr and Vidhatr at the doorway.
Verse 41 (shiva.uma.10.41)
śvabhyaśca śvapatibhyaśca vayobhyo vikṣipedbhuvi devaiḥ pitṛmanuṣyaiśca pretairbhūtaiḥ saguhyakaiḥ
And an offering should be scattered on the ground for dogs, for the lords of dogs, and for birds — in this share gods, ancestors, men, ghosts, spirits, and Guhyakas together.
Verse 42 (shiva.uma.10.42)
vayobhiḥ kṛmikīṭaiśca gṛhasthaścopajīvyate svāhākāraḥ svadhākāro vaṣaṭkārastṛtīyakaḥ
The householder sustains himself together with birds, worms, and insects too. Svahakara, svadhakara, and vashatkara as the third —
Verse 43 (shiva.uma.10.43)
hantakārastathaivānyo dhenvāḥ stanacatuṣṭayam svāhākāraṁ stanaṁ devāḥ svadhāṁ ca pitarastathā
and hantakara as the fourth — these are, as it were, the four teats of that cow. The teat called svahakara the gods drink, and likewise svadha the ancestors,
Verse 44 (shiva.uma.10.44)
vaṣaṭkāraṁ tathaivānye devā bhūteśvarāstathā hantakāraṁ manuṣyāśca pibanti satataṁ stanam
the teat called vashatkara other gods and the lords of beings drink, and the teat called hantakara men continually drink.
Verse 45 (shiva.uma.10.45)
yastvetāṁ mānavo dhenuṁ śraddhayā hyanupūrvikām karoti satataṁ kāle sāgnitvāyopakalpyate
Whatever man, with faith, continually performs this rite likened to that cow, in due order and at the proper time, becomes fit to attain nearness to Agni.
Verse 46 (shiva.uma.10.46)
yastāṁ jahāti vāsvasthastāmisre sa tu majjati tasmāddattvā baliṁ tebhyo dvārasthaścintayetkṣaṇam
But whoever, out of negligence, abandons this rite sinks into the hell of Tamisra. Therefore, having given the offering to them, one standing at the door should reflect for a moment.
Verse 47 (shiva.uma.10.47)
kṣudhārtamatithiṁ samyagekagrāmanivāsinam bhojayettaṁ śubhānnena yathāśaktyātmabhojanāt
One should properly feed a hunger-stricken guest, even a fellow villager, with good food from one's own meal, according to one's means.
Verse 48 (shiva.uma.10.48)
atithiryasya bhagnāśo gṛhātpratinivartate sa tasmai duṣkṛtaṁ dattvā puṇyamādāya gacchati
The guest whose hope is dashed and who turns back from a house departs, leaving his own sin with that householder and taking away the householder's merit.
Verse 49 (shiva.uma.10.49)
Thereafter, that man, even while eating food he loves, remains there for a long time, bound once more in chains and pierced by the lash of a fiery tongue.
Verse 50 (shiva.uma.10.50)
yatastammāṁsamuddhṛtya tilamātrapramāṇataḥ khādituṁ dīyate teṣāṁ bhittvā caiva tu śoṇitam
His own flesh is carved out in portions no bigger than a sesame seed and, after piercing him till the blood flows, is given to him to eat.
Verse 51 (shiva.uma.10.51)
niḥśeṣataḥ kaśābhistu pīḍyate kramaśaḥ punaḥ bubhukṣayātikaṣṭaṁ hi tathācātipipāsayā
Again and again he is thoroughly scourged with whips, and he suffers extreme anguish from hunger and likewise from extreme thirst.
Verse 52 (shiva.uma.10.52)
evamādyā mahāghorāḥ yātanāḥ pāpakarmaṇām ante yatpratipannaṁ hi tatsaṅkṣepeṇa saṁśṛṇu
Such are these and other exceedingly dreadful torments belonging to the doers of sinful deeds. Now hear, in brief, the conclusion finally reached on this matter.
Verse 53 (shiva.uma.10.53)
yaḥ karoti mahāpāpaṁ dharmaṁ carati vai laghu dharmaṁ gurutaraṁ vāpi tathāvasthe tayoḥ śṛṇu
Of one who commits a great sin yet also practices a little dharma, or of one who practices a greater dharma besides — hear the condition of both.
Verse 54 (shiva.uma.10.54)
sukṛtasya phalaṁ noktaṁ gurupāpaprabhāvataḥ na minoti sukhaṁ tatra bhogairbahubhiranvitaḥ
Because of the power of a great sin, the fruit of his good deeds does not manifest; even endowed with many enjoyments, he finds no happiness there.
Verse 55 (shiva.uma.10.55)
tathodvigno'tisantapto na bhakṣyairmanyate sukham abhāvādagrato'nyasya pratikalyaṁ dine dine
Restless and deeply tormented, he finds no happiness even in delicacies, for day after day there is nothing else before him to relieve his unease.
Verse 56 (shiva.uma.10.56)
pumānyo gurudharmāpi sopavāso yathā gṛhī vittavānna vijānāti pīḍāṁ niyamasaṁsthitaḥ
But whatever man, while practicing great dharma, also undertakes fasts like a devout householder — though wealthy, being firmly established in his discipline, he knows no such pain.
Verse 57 (shiva.uma.10.57)
tāni pāpāni ghorāṇi santi yaiśca naro bhuvi śatadhā bhedamāpnoti girirvajrahato yathā
Those terrible sins with which a man becomes burdened on earth shatter him into a hundred fragments, just as a mountain is riven apart when struck by the thunderbolt.
