The Knowledge of Time

Chapter 24All chaptersChapter 26

Verse 1 (shiva.uma.25.1)

vyāsa uvāca sanatkumāra sarvajña tvatsakāśānmayā mune strīsvabhāvaḥ śrutaḥ prītyā kālajñānaṁ vadasva me

Vyasa said: O all-knowing Sanatkumara, O sage, from you I have gladly heard of the nature of women. Now tell me of the knowledge of time.

Verse 2 (shiva.uma.25.2)

sanatkumāra uvāca idameva purāpṛcchat pārvatī parameśvaram śrutvā nānākathāṁ divyāṁ prasannā supraṇamya tam

Sanatkumara said: This very question Parvati once asked of the Supreme Lord — having heard many divine tales, and being pleased, she bowed well to him and asked.

Verse 3 (shiva.uma.25.3)

pārvatyuvāca bhagavaṁstvatprasādena jñātaṁ me sakalaṁ matam yathārcanaṁ tu te deva yairmantraiśca yathāvidhi

Parvati said: O Lord, by your grace I have come to know the entire doctrine — how you are to be worshipped, with which mantras and according to which rites.

Verse 4 (shiva.uma.25.4)

adyāpi saṁśayastvekaḥ kālacakraṁ prati prabho mṛtyucihnaṁ yathā deva kiṁ pramāṇaṁ yathāyuṣaḥ

Yet even now, O Lord, one doubt remains regarding the wheel of time: what are the signs of death, O god, and what is the measure of the span of life?

Verse 5 (shiva.uma.25.5)

sarvaṁ kathaya me nātha yadyahaṁ tava vallabhā iti pṛṣṭastayā devyā pratyuvāca maheśvaraḥ

Tell me all of this, O Lord, if indeed I am dear to you. Thus questioned by the Goddess, Maheshvara replied.

Verse 6 (shiva.uma.25.6)

īśvara uvāca satyaṁ te kathayiṣyāmi śāstraṁ sarvottamaṁ priye yena śāstreṇa deveśi naraiḥ kālaḥ prabudhyate

Ishvara said: I shall truly tell you, O beloved, this most excellent science, by which science, O queen of gods, men come to know time.

Verse 7 (shiva.uma.25.7)

ahaḥ pakṣaṁ tathā māsamṛtuṁ cāyanavatsarau sthūlasūkṣmagataiścihnairbahirantargataistathā

The day, the fortnight, the month, the season, the solstice, and the year — through gross and subtle signs, both outward and inward.

Verse 8 (shiva.uma.25.8)

tatte'haṁ sampravakṣyāmi śṛṇu tattvena sundari lokānāmupakārārthaṁ vairāgyārthamume'dhunā

That I shall now declare to you in full; listen with attention, O beautiful one — for the benefit of the world, and for the sake of dispassion, O Uma, I speak now.

Verse 9 (shiva.uma.25.9)

akasmātpāṇḍuraṁ dehamūrdhvarāgaṁ samantataḥ tadā mṛtyuṁ vijānīyātṣaṇmāsābhyantare priye

When the body suddenly turns pale, with a flush spreading upward all over, then, O beloved, one should know death within six months.

Verse 10 (shiva.uma.25.10)

mukhaṁ karṇau tathā cakṣurjihvāstambho yadā bhavet tadā mṛtyuṁ vijānīyātṣaṇmāsābhyantare priye

When the mouth, the ears, the eyes, or the tongue become stiff and numb, then, O beloved, one should know death within six months.

Verse 11 (shiva.uma.25.11)

rauravānugataṁ bhadre dhvaniṁ nākarṇayed drutam ṣaṇmāsābhyantare mṛtyurjñātavyaḥ kālavedibhiḥ

O gentle one, when a person can no longer swiftly hear the roaring inner sound of the ears, death within six months is to be known by those versed in time.

Verse 12 (shiva.uma.25.12)

ravisomāgnisaṁyogādyadodyotaṁ na paśyati kṛṣṇaṁ sarvaṁ samastaṁ ca ṣaṇmāsaṁ jīvitaṁ tathā

When, through the conjunction of sun, moon, or fire, one no longer perceives their light, and everything appears entirely black, then six months of life remain.

Verse 13 (shiva.uma.25.13)

vāmahasto yadā devi saptāhaṁ spandate priye jīvitaṁ tu tadā tasya māsamekaṁ na saṁśayaḥ

When, O goddess, the left hand throbs continuously for a week, O beloved, then his life remains for one month, without doubt.

Verse 14 (shiva.uma.25.14)

unmīlayanti gātrāṇi tālukaṁ śuṣyate yadā jīvitaṁ tu tadā tasya māsamekaṁ na saṁśayaḥ

When the limbs begin to twitch on their own and the palate begins to dry up, then his life remains for one month, without doubt.

Verse 15 (shiva.uma.25.15)

nāsā tu sravate yasya tridoṣe pakṣajīvitam vaktraṁ kaṇṭhaṁ ca śuṣyeta ṣaṇmāsānte gatāyuṣaḥ

He whose nose runs due to the three humors has a fortnight of life left; whose mouth and throat dry up, his life ends at six months.

Verse 16 (shiva.uma.25.16)

sthūlajihvā bhavedyasya dvijāḥ klidyanti bhāmini ṣaṇmāsājjāyate mṛtyuścihnaistairupalakṣayet

He whose tongue becomes thick and swollen, O radiant one, and whose teeth grow moist — death occurs within six months; one should recognize it by these signs.

Verse 17 (shiva.uma.25.17)

ambutailaghṛtasthaṁ tu darpaṇe varavarṇini na paśyati yadātmānaṁ vikṛtaṁ palameva ca

O fair one, when a person, looking into water, oil, ghee, or a mirror, does not see his own reflection, or sees it distorted even for a moment —

Verse 18 (shiva.uma.25.18)

ṣaṇmāsāyuḥ sa vijñeyaḥ kālacakraṁ vijānatā anyacca śṛṇu deveśi yena mṛtyurvibuddhyate

— he should be known, by one who understands the wheel of time, to have six months of life. Hear yet another sign, O queen of gods, by which death is recognized.

Verse 19 (shiva.uma.25.19)

śirohīnāṁ yadā chāyāṁ svakīyāmupalakṣayet athavā chāyayā hīno māsamekaṁ na jīvati

When a person perceives his own shadow without a head, or when he is found without a shadow at all, he does not live beyond one month.

Verse 20 (shiva.uma.25.20)

āṅgikāni mayoktāni mṛtyucihnāni pārvati bāhyasthāni bruve bhadre cihnāni śṛṇu sāmpratam

These, O Parvati, are the bodily signs of death that I have described. Now, O gentle one, I speak of the external signs — hear them now.

Verse 21 (shiva.uma.25.21)

raśmihīnaṁ yadā devi bhavetsomārkamaṇḍalam dṛśyate pāṭalākāraṁ māsārdhena vipadyate

When, O goddess, the orb of the moon or sun becomes without rays and appears pale-pink in form, one perishes within half a month.

Verse 22 (shiva.uma.25.22)

arundhatīṁ mahāyānaminduṁ lakṣaṇavarjitam adṛṣṭatārako yo'sau māsamekaṁ sa jīvati

He who cannot see the star Arundhati, the Great Chariot, or the moon devoid of its markings, and to whom that star remains unseen — he lives for one month.

Verse 23 (shiva.uma.25.23)

dṛṣṭe grahe ca diṅmohaḥ ṣaṇmāsājjāyate dhruvam utathyaṁ na dhruvaṁ paśyedyadi vā ravimaṇḍalam

When, upon seeing a planet, confusion of direction occurs, death within six months is certain; or if one cannot truly see the pole-star, or the orb of the sun —

Verse 24 (shiva.uma.25.24)

rātrau dhanuryadā paśyenmadhyāhne colkapātanam veṣṭyate gṛdhrakākaiśca ṣaṇmāsāyurna saṁśayaḥ

— when at night one sees a bow-shaped light, or at midday sees a meteor fall, or is surrounded by vultures and crows, then six months of life remain, without doubt.

Verse 25 (shiva.uma.25.25)

ṛṣayaḥ svargapanthāśca dṛśyante naiva cāmbare ṣaṇmāsāyurvijanīyātpuruṣaiḥ kālavedibhiḥ

When the Seven Sages and the pathway to heaven are no longer seen in the sky, six months of life should be known by men versed in time.

Verse 26 (shiva.uma.25.26)

akasmādrāhuṇā grastaṁ sūryaṁ vā somameva ca dikcakraṁ bhrāntavatpaśyetṣaṇmāsānmriyate sphuṭam

If one suddenly sees the sun or moon as if seized by Rahu, or sees the circle of directions as if whirling, one clearly dies within six months.

Verse 27 (shiva.uma.25.27)

nīlābhirmakṣikābhiśca hyakasmād veṣṭyate pumān māsamekaṁ hi tasyāyurjñātavyaṁ paramārthataḥ

When a man is suddenly surrounded by blue flies, his life should truly be known to be but one month.

Verse 28 (shiva.uma.25.28)

gṛdhraḥ kākaḥ kapotaśca śiraścākramya tiṣṭhati śīghraṁ tu mriyate janturmāsaikena na saṁśayaḥ

If a vulture, crow, or pigeon comes and perches upon one's head, that being dies swiftly, within one month, without doubt.

Verse 29 (shiva.uma.25.29)

evaṁ cāriṣṭabhedastu bāhyasthaḥ samudāhṛtaḥ mānuṣāṇāṁ hitārthāya saṅkṣepeṇa vadāmyaham

Thus have the external kinds of ill-omens been declared. For the benefit of mankind, I speak of them in brief.

Verse 30 (shiva.uma.25.30)

hastayorubhayordevi yathā kālaṁ vijānate vāmadakṣiṇayormadhye pratyakṣaṁ cetyudāhṛtam

O goddess, hear now how time is known through both hands — between the left and right, this is declared as a direct method.

Verse 31 (shiva.uma.25.31)

evaṁ pakṣau sthitau dvau tu samāsātsurasundari śucirbhūtvā smarandevaṁ susnātaḥ saṁyatendriyaḥ

Thus, in summary, the two sides stand established, O beautiful one among the gods — having become pure, having bathed well, with senses restrained, remembering the Lord —

Verse 32 (shiva.uma.25.32)

hastau prakṣālya dugdhenālaktakena vimardayet gandhaiḥ puṣpaiḥ karau kṛtvā mṛgayecca śubhāśubham

— having washed the hands, one should rub them with milk and lac-dye; having anointed the hands with fragrances and flowers, one should then seek out the auspicious and inauspicious signs.

Verse 33 (shiva.uma.25.33)

kaniṣṭhāmāditaḥ kṛtvā yāvadaṅguṣṭhakaṁ priye parvatrayakrameṇaiva hastayorubhayorapi

Beginning from the little finger up to the thumb, O beloved, in the sequence of the three joints of each finger, on both hands —

Verse 34 (shiva.uma.25.34)

pratipadādi vinyasya tithiṁ pratipadāditaḥ sampuṭākārahastau tu pūrvadiṅmukhasaṁsthitaḥ

— placing the lunar dates beginning from Pratipada, one should sit facing east, with the hands joined in the shape of a cupped lotus-bud.

Verse 35 (shiva.uma.25.35)

smarennavātmakaṁ mantraṁ yāvadaṣṭottaraṁ śatam nirīkṣayettato hastau pratiparvaṇi yatnataḥ

One should recollect the nine-syllabled mantra a full one hundred and eight times; then one should carefully examine the hands, joint by joint.

Verse 36 (shiva.uma.25.36)

tasminparvaṇi sā rekhā dṛśyate bhṛṅgasannibhā tattithau hi mṛtirjñeyā kṛṣṇe śukle tathā priye

At whichever joint a line resembling a black bee is seen, on that corresponding tithi — whether in the dark or the bright fortnight, O beloved — death is to be known.

Verse 37 (shiva.uma.25.37)

adhunā nādajaṁ vakṣye saṅkṣepātkālalakṣaṇam gamāgamaṁ viditvā tu karma kuryāñchṛṇu priye

Now I shall briefly describe the signs of time arising from sound; having known its coming and going, one should act accordingly — listen, O beloved.

Verse 38 (shiva.uma.25.38)

ātmavijñānaṁ suśroṇi cāraṁ jñātvā tu yatnataḥ kṣaṇaṁ truṭirlavaṁ caiva nimeṣaṁ kāṣṭhakālikam

O fair-hipped one, having diligently known self-knowledge and the movement of the vital breath: the units kṣaṇa, truṭi, lava, nimeṣa, and kāṣṭhā —

Verse 39 (shiva.uma.25.39)

muhūrtakaṁ tvahorātraṁ pakṣamāsartuvatsaram abdaṁ yugaṁ tathā kalpaṁ mahākalpaṁ tathaiva ca

— the muhūrta, the day-and-night, the fortnight, the month, the season, the year, the abda, the yuga, the kalpa, and likewise the mahākalpa —

Verse 40 (shiva.uma.25.40)

evaṁ sa harate kālaḥ paripāṭyā sadāśivaḥ vāmadakṣiṇamadhye tu pathi trayamidaṁ smṛtam

— thus does Sadashiva, in due sequence, carry time onward. In the left, right, and middle channels, this threefold course is remembered.

Verse 41 (shiva.uma.25.41)

dināni pañca cārabhya pañcaviṁśaddināvadhi vāmācāragatau nādaḥ pramāṇaṁ kathitaṁ tava

Beginning from five days up to a limit of twenty-five days — in the course of the left channel's movement, sound is declared to you as the measure.

Verse 42 (shiva.uma.25.42)

bhūtarandhraṁ diśaścaiva dhvajaśca varavarṇini vāmacāragatau nādaḥ pramāṇaṁ kālavedinaḥ

The elemental cavity, the directions, and the subtle banner-sign, O fair one — in the course of the left channel's movement, sound is the measure known to those versed in time.

Verse 43 (shiva.uma.25.43)

ṛtorvikārabhūtāśca guṇāstatraiva bhāmini pramāṇaṁ dakṣiṇaṁ proktaṁ jñātavyaṁ prāṇavedibhiḥ

The qualities that are the transformations of the seasons, O radiant one, are found there as well; the right channel is declared as the measure, known to those versed in the vital breath.

Verse 44 (shiva.uma.25.44)

bhūtasaṅkhyā yadā prāṇānvahante ca iḍādayaḥ varṣasyābhyantare tasya jīvitaṁ hi na saṁśayaḥ

When the channels beginning with Ida carry the breaths in the count of the elements, then his life, within the span of a year, is certain, without doubt.

Verse 45 (shiva.uma.25.45)

daśaghasrapravāheṇa hyabdamānaṁ sa jīvati pañcadaśapravāheṇa hyabdamekaṁ gatāyuṣam

By a flow lasting ten days, he lives for a full year's measure; by a flow of fifteen days too his lifespan is one year, but reckoned as already elapsing.

Verse 46 (shiva.uma.25.46)

viṁśaddinapravāheṇa ṣaṇmāsaṁ lakṣayettadā pañcaviṁśaddinamitaṁ vahate vāmanāḍikā

By a flow of twenty days, one should then reckon six months of life; when the left channel flows for a measure of twenty-five days —

Verse 47 (shiva.uma.25.47)

jīvitaṁ tu tadā tasya trimāsaṁ hi gatāyuṣaḥ ṣaḍviṁśaddinamānena māsadvayamudāhṛtam

— then his remaining life is three months. By a measure of twenty-six days, two months are declared.

Verse 48 (shiva.uma.25.48)

saptaviṁśaddinamitaṁ vahate tvatyaviśramā māsamekaṁ samākhyātaṁ jīvitaṁ vāmagocare

When it flows unceasingly for a measure of twenty-seven days, one month of life is declared within the range of the left channel.

Verse 49 (shiva.uma.25.49)

etatpramāṇaṁ vijñeyaṁ vāmavāyupramāṇataḥ savyetare dinānyeva catvāraścānupūrvaśaḥ

This measure should be understood according to the standard of the left-breath. In the other, right channel, the days follow in the same successive order —

Verse 50 (shiva.uma.25.50)

catussthāne sthitā devi ṣoḍaśaitāḥ prakīrtitāḥ teṣāṁ pramāṇaṁ vakṣyāmi sāmprataṁ hi yathārthataḥ

— O goddess, established in four places, these sixteen measures have been declared. I shall now truly state their exact measure.

Verse 51 (shiva.uma.25.51)

ṣaḍdinānyāditaḥ kṛtvā saṅkhyāyāśca yathāvidhi etadantargate caiva vāmarandhre prakāśitam

Beginning with six days, and counting according to the proper method — within this range, it manifests through the opening of the left channel.

Verse 52 (shiva.uma.25.52)

ṣaḍdināni yadā rūḍhaṁ dvivarṣaṁ ca sa jīvati māsānaṣṭau vijānīyāddinānyaṣṭau ca tāni tu

When it is established for six days, he lives for two years; one should also know eight months and eight days as its measure.

Verse 53 (shiva.uma.25.53)

prāṇāḥ saptadaśe caiva viddhi varṣaṁ na saṁśayaḥ saptamāsānvijānīyāddinaiḥ ṣaḍbhirna saṁśayaḥ

Know that when the breaths are counted at seventeen days, it is a full year without doubt; know seven months along with six days, without doubt.

Verse 54 (shiva.uma.25.54)

aṣṭaghasraprabhedena dvivarṣaṁ hi sa jīvati caturmāsā hi vijñeyāścaturviṁśaddināvadhi

By the distinction of an eight-day span, he lives indeed for two years; four months, up to a limit of twenty-four days, should be known.

Verse 55 (shiva.uma.25.55)

yadā navadinaṁ prāṇā vahantyeva trimāsakam māsadvayaṁ ca dve māse dinā dvādaśa kīrtitāḥ

When the breaths flow for nine days, it indicates three months; two months are also declared, and within those two months, twelve days.

Verse 56 (shiva.uma.25.56)

pūrvavatkathitā ye tu kālaṁ teṣāṁ tu pūrvakam avāntaradinā ye tu tena māsena kathyate

Those measures that were declared as before follow the earlier pattern; whatever intervening days remain are reckoned by that corresponding month.

Verse 57 (shiva.uma.25.57)

ekādaśapravāheṇa varṣamekaṁ sa jīvati māsā nava tathā proktā dinānyaṣṭamitānyapi

By a flow of eleven days, he lives for one full year; nine months are also declared, along with a measure of eight days.

Verse 58 (shiva.uma.25.58)

dvādaśena pravāheṇa varṣamekaṁ sa jīvati māsān sapta vijānīyātṣaḍghasrāṁścāpyudāharet

By a flow of twelve days, he lives for one year; one should know seven months, and six days should also be counted.

Verse 59 (shiva.uma.25.59)

nāḍī yadā ca vahati trayodaśadināvadhi saṁvatsaraṁ bhavettasya caturmāsāḥ prakīrtitāḥ

When the channel flows up to a limit of thirteen days, a full year of life remains for him; and four months are also declared.

Verse 60 (shiva.uma.25.60)

caturviśaddinaṁ śeṣaṁ jīvitaṁ ca na saṁśayaḥ prāṇavāhā yadā vāme caturddaśadināni tu

— with twenty-four days remaining as life, without doubt. When the breath-flow in the left channel continues for fourteen days —

Verse 61 (shiva.uma.25.61)

saṁvatsaraṁ bhavettasya māsāḥ ṣaṭ ca prakīrtitāḥ caturviṁśaddinānyeva jīvitaṁ ca na saṁśayaḥ

— then a full year of life remains for him, and six months are also declared; twenty-four days too, without doubt.

Verse 62 (shiva.uma.25.62)

pañcadaśapravāheṇa nava māsānsa jīvati caturviśaddinānyeva kathitaṁ kālavedibhiḥ

By a flow of fifteen days, he lives for nine months; twenty-four days too are declared by those versed in time.

Verse 63 (shiva.uma.25.63)

ṣoḍaśāhapravāheṇa daśamāsānsa jīvati caturviśaddinādhikyaṁ kathitaṁ kālavedibhiḥ

By a flow of sixteen days, he lives for ten months; an excess of twenty-four days is also declared by those versed in time.

Verse 64 (shiva.uma.25.64)

saptadaśapravāheṇa navamāsairgatāyuṣam aṣṭādaśa dinānyatra kathitaṁ sādhakeśvari

By a flow of seventeen days, the life is measured as nine months already elapsed; here eighteen days are also declared, O queen of the seekers.

Verse 65 (shiva.uma.25.65)

vāmacāraṁ yadā devi hyaṣṭādaśadināvadhiḥ jīvitaṁ cāṣṭamāsaṁ tu ghasrā dvādaśa kīrtitāḥ

When, O goddess, the left channel's course reaches a limit of eighteen days, eight months of life remain, and twelve days are also declared.

Verse 66 (shiva.uma.25.66)

caturviṁśaddinānyatra niścayenāvadhāraya prāṇavāho yadā devi trayoviṁśaddināvadhiḥ

Here know with certainty twenty-four days as well. When, O goddess, the breath-flow reaches a limit of twenty-three days —

Verse 67 (shiva.uma.25.67)

catvāraḥ kathitā māsāḥ ṣaḍdināni tathottare caturviṁśapravāheṇa trīnmāsāṁśca sa jīvati

— four months are declared, with six additional days thereafter. By a flow of twenty-four days, he lives for three months.

Verse 68 (shiva.uma.25.68)

dinānyatra daśāṣṭau sa saṁharantyeva cārataḥ avāntaradine yastu saṅkṣepātte prakīrtitāḥ

Here eighteen days too are gathered in through this same course. Whatever intervening days remain have been declared to you in brief.

Verse 69 (shiva.uma.25.69)

vāmacāraḥ samākhyāto dakṣiṇaṁ śṛṇu sāmpratam aṣṭāviṁśapravāheṇa tithimānena jīvati

The course of the left channel has thus been declared; now hear of the right. By a flow of twenty-eight days, he lives by the measure of the lunar day.

Verse 70 (shiva.uma.25.70)

pravāheṇa daśāhena tatsaṁsthena vipadyate triṁśaddhasrapravāhena pañcāhena vipadyate

By a flow lasting ten days in that condition, he perishes; by a flow of thirty days, he perishes within five days.

Verse 71 (shiva.uma.25.71)

ekatriṁśadyadā devi vahate ca nirantaram dinatrayaṁ tadā tasya jīvitaṁ hi na saṁśayaḥ

When, O goddess, it flows unceasingly for thirty-one days, then his life remains for three days, without doubt.

Verse 72 (shiva.uma.25.72)

dvātriṁśatprāṇasaṅkhyā ca yadā hi vahate raviḥ tadā tu jīvitaṁ tasya dvidinaṁ hi na saṁśayaḥ

When the count of breaths reaches thirty-two and the sun-channel flows thus, then his life remains for two days, without doubt.

Verse 73 (shiva.uma.25.73)

dakṣiṇaḥ kathitaḥ prāṇo madhyasthaṁ kathayāmi te ekabhāgagato vāyupravāho mukhamaṇḍale

Thus the right breath has been described; now I speak to you of the middle channel. When the flow of breath, moving as a single stream, occupies the region of the face —

Verse 74 (shiva.uma.25.74)

dhāvamānapravāheṇa dinamekaṁ sa jīvati cakrametatparāsorhi purāvidbhirudāhṛtam

— by this rushing flow, he lives for just one day. This wheel of the departing life-breath has thus been declared by the ancient knowers.

Verse 75 (shiva.uma.25.75)

etatte kathitaṁ devi kālacakraṁ gatāyuṣaḥ lokānāṁ ca hitārthāya kimanyacchrotumicchasi

This, O goddess, has been told to you — the wheel of time governing the elapsing life-span, for the benefit of the worlds. What else do you wish to hear?
