The Glory of the Pitrs, Part Two

Chapter 41All chaptersChapter 43

Verse 1 (shiva.uma.42.1)

bhīṣma uvāca mārkaṇḍeya mahāprājña pitṛbhaktibhṛtāṁ vara kiṁ jātaṁ tu tato brūhi kṛpayā munisattama

Bhishma said: O greatly wise Markandeya, best among those devoted to the Pitrs, tell me now, O foremost of sages, out of your kindness, what happened after that.

Verse 2 (shiva.uma.42.2)

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca te dharmayoganiratāḥ sapta mānasacāriṇaḥ vāyvambubhakṣāḥ satataṁ śarīramupaśoṣayan

Markandeya said: Those seven, devoted to dharma and yoga, became birds roaming upon Lake Manasa; living continually on air and water alone, they wasted their bodies away.

Verse 3 (shiva.uma.42.3)

sa rājāntaḥpuravṛto nandane maghavā iva krīḍitvā suciraṁ tatra sabhāryaḥ svapuraṁ yayau

That king, surrounded by his household, having sported for a long time like Indra in the Nandana grove, returned to his own city together with his queen.

Verse 4 (shiva.uma.42.4)

anūho nāma tasyāsītputraḥ paramadhārmikaḥ taṁ vibhrājaḥ sutaṁ rājye sthāpayitvā vanaṁ yayau

His son was named Anuha, supremely righteous; having established that son in the kingdom, Vibhraja went away to the forest.

Verse 5 (shiva.uma.42.5)

There he began to practise austerity, in the very place where those companions dwelt; that great ascetic remained there without food, subsisting on air alone.

Verse 6 (shiva.uma.42.6)

tato vibhrājitaṁ tena vaibhrājaṁ nāma tadvanam babhūva suprasiddhaṁ hi yogasiddhipradāyakam

Illumined by him, that forest became renowned by the name "Vaibhrāja", becoming a place that bestows the accomplishment of yoga.

Verse 7 (shiva.uma.42.7)

tatraiva te hi śakunāścatvāro yogadharmiṇaḥ yogabhraṣṭāstrayaścaiva dehatyāgakṛto'bhavan

There, of those Śakuna birds, four remained steadfast in the dharma of yoga, while three, fallen from yoga, gave up their bodies.

Verse 8 (shiva.uma.42.8)

kāmpilye nagare te tu brahmadattapurogamāḥ jātāḥ sapta mahātmānaḥ sarve vigatakalmaṣāḥ

They were born in the city of Kampilya as seven great souls, all free from sin, with Brahmadatta foremost among them.

Verse 9 (shiva.uma.42.9)

smṛtimanto'tra catvārastrayastu parimohitāḥ svatantrastvaṇuhājjāto brahmadatto mahaujasaḥ

Of them, four possessed the memory of former births, while three were bound by delusion; and Svatantra was born as Anuha's mighty and glorious son, Brahmadatta.

Verse 10 (shiva.uma.42.10)

chidradarśī sunetrastu vedavedāṅgapāragau jātau śrotriyadāyādau pūrvajātisahoṣitau

Chidradarśī and Sunetra were both born as descendants of a priestly (śrotriya) line, learned in the Vedas and their auxiliary sciences — companions who had lived together since their former birth.

Verse 11 (shiva.uma.42.11)

pañcālo bahvṛcastvāsīdācāryatvaṁ cakāra ha dvivedaḥ puṇḍarīkaśca chandogo'dhvaryureva ca

Pañcāla became a scholar of the Rigveda and attained the position of a teacher; Dviveda and Puṇḍarīka became, in turn, a chanter of the Sāma and a performer of the Yajus rites.

Verse 12 (shiva.uma.42.12)

tato rājā sutaṁ dṛṣṭvā brahmadattamakalmaṣam abhiṣicya svarājye tu parāṁ gatimavāptavān

Then the king, seeing his sinless son Brahmadatta, consecrated him upon his own throne and himself attained to the supreme state.

Verse 13 (shiva.uma.42.13)

pañcālaḥ puṇḍarīkastu putrau saṁsthāpya mandire viviśaturvanaṁ tatra gatau paramikāṁ gatim

Pañcāla and Puṇḍarīka, having established their own sons in their households, entered the forest, and there attained to the supreme state.

Verse 14 (shiva.uma.42.14)

brahmadattasya bhāryā tu sannitirnāma bhārata sā tvekabhāvasaṁyuktā reme bhartrā sahaiva tu

O descendant of Bharata, Brahmadatta's wife was named Sannati; devoted with a single-hearted love, she lived in delight with her husband alone.

Verse 15 (shiva.uma.42.15)

śeṣāstu cakravākā vai kāmpilye sahacāriṇaḥ jātāḥ śrotriyadāyādā daridrasya kule nṛpa

O king, the remaining cakravāka companions were born in Kampilya itself, as descendants born into the family of a poor śrotriya priest.

Verse 16 (shiva.uma.42.16)

dhṛtimānsumahātmā ca tattvadarśīṁ nirutsukaḥ vedādhyayana sampannāścatvāraśchidradarśinaḥ

Dhṛtimān, the great-souled one, Tattvadarśī, and Nirutsuka — these four, accomplished in the study of the Veda, were known as "Chidradarśī" (the seers of flaws).

Verse 17 (shiva.uma.42.17)

te yoganiratāḥ siddhāḥ prasthitāḥ sarva eva hi āmantrya ca mithaḥ śambhoḥ padāmbhojaṁ praṇamya tu

Devoted to yoga and accomplished, all of them, having conferred together and bowed to the lotus feet of Shambhu, set forth to depart the body.

Verse 18 (shiva.uma.42.18)

te tamūcurdvijāḥ sarve pitaraṁ punareva ca kariṣyāmo vidhānaṁ te yena tvaṁ vartayiṣyasi

All those brahmins said once more to their father: "We shall arrange a means by which you may sustain your livelihood."

Verse 19 (shiva.uma.42.19)

imaṁ ślokaṁ mahārthaṁ tvaṁ rājānaṁ sahamantriṇam śrāvayethāḥ samāgamya brahmadattamakalmaṣam

"Go to the king together with his ministers, and to the sinless Brahmadatta recite this verse of profound meaning.

Verse 20 (shiva.uma.42.20)

Pleased in heart, he will give you many villages and abundant enjoyments." Having said this much, all of them, having honoured their guru — their father — attained the yogic dharma and reached the supreme bliss.

Verse 21 (shiva.uma.42.21)

caturṇāṁ tu pitā yo'sau brāhmaṇānāṁ mahātmanām ślokaṁ so'dhītya putrebhyaḥ kṛtakṛtya ivābhavat

He who was the father of those four great-souled brahmins, having learned that verse from his sons, felt himself, as it were, to have accomplished his very purpose.

Verse 22 (shiva.uma.42.22)

śrāvayāmāsa rājānaṁ slokaṁ taṁ sacivau ca tau saptavyādhā daśārṇeṣu mṛgāḥ kālañjare girau

He recited that verse to the king and to his two ministers: "The seven hunters in the land of Dashārna, the deer on Mount Kalanjara,

Verse 23 (shiva.uma.42.23)

cakravākāḥ śaradvīpe haṁsāḥ sarasi mānase te'bhijātāḥ kurukṣetre brāhmaṇā vedapāragāḥ

the cakravākas on Sharadvipa, the swans on Lake Manasa — those very ones are now born in Kurukshetra as brahmins accomplished in the Veda.

Verse 24 (shiva.uma.42.24)

prasthitā dirghamadhvānaṁ yuyaṁ kimavasīdatha tacchrutvā mohamagamadbrahmadatto narādhipaḥ

You have journeyed a long road together — why then do you grieve?" Hearing this, King Brahmadatta was overcome with a profound swoon of recognition.

Verse 25 (shiva.uma.42.25)

sacivaścāsya pāñcālaḥ puṇḍarīkaśca bhārata tataste tatsaraḥ smṛtvā yogaṁ tamupalabhya ca

O descendant of Bharata, his ministers Pañchāla and Puṇḍarīka too, remembering that lake and recovering that state of yogic recollection, were struck likewise.

Verse 26 (shiva.uma.42.26)

brāhmaṇaṁ vipulairarthairbhogaiśca samayojayan abhiṣicya svarājye tu viṣvaksenamarindamam

They honoured that brahmin with abundant wealth and enjoyments; and having consecrated Vishvaksena, the subduer of foes, upon their own kingdom,

Verse 27 (shiva.uma.42.27)

jagāma brahmadatto hi sadāro vanameva ha prāpya yogaṁ balādeva gatiṁ prāpa sudurlabhām

Brahmadatta himself went with his wife into the forest; and, attaining yoga through strenuous effort, he reached that most difficult-to-attain state.

Verse 28 (shiva.uma.42.28)

puṇḍarīko'pi dharmātmā sāṅkhyayogamanuttamam prāpya yogagatiḥ siddho viśuddhastena karmaṇā

The righteous Puṇḍarīka too, having attained the unsurpassed Sāṅkhya-yoga, became accomplished in yoga and purified by that act.

Verse 29 (shiva.uma.42.29)

kramaṁ praṇīya pāñcālyaḥ śikṣāṁ cotpādya kevalām yogācāryagatiṁ prāpa yaśaścāgryaṁ mahātapāḥ

Pāñchālya, having established the due sequence and set forth pure teaching, attained the state of a teacher of yoga; that great ascetic won foremost renown.

Verse 30 (shiva.uma.42.30)

śūrā ye samprapadyante apunarbhavakāṅkṣiṇaḥ pāpaṁ praṇāśayantvadya tacchambhoḥ paramaṁ padam

May those brave ones who, desiring freedom from rebirth, truly take refuge in this account, destroy their sin this very day and reach that supreme state of Shambhu.

Verse 31 (shiva.uma.42.31)

śārīre mānase caiva pāpe vāgje mahāmune kṛte samyagidaṁ bhaktyā paṭhecchraddhāsamanvitaḥ

O great sage, whatever sin is committed by the body, by the mind, or by speech — if this [account] is duly recited with devotion, filled with faith,

Verse 32 (shiva.uma.42.32)

mucyate sarvapāpebhyaḥ śivanāmānukīrtanāt uccāryamāṇa etasmindevadevasya tasya vai

then, merely by the repeated utterance of Shiva's name, one is freed from all sins; the very moment that name of the God of gods is pronounced —

Verse 33 (shiva.uma.42.33)

vilayaṁ pāpamāyāti hyāmabhāṇḍamivāmbhasi tasmāttatsañcite pāpe samānāntarameva ca

sin dissolves just as an unbaked earthen vessel dissolves in water; therefore, for the destruction of accumulated sin too, it should be recited in the very same way.

Verse 34 (shiva.uma.42.34)

japtavyametatpāpasya praśamāya mahāmune naraiḥ śraddhālubhibhūryaḥ sarvakāmaphalāptaye

O great sage, this must be recited for the pacification of sin, and it should likewise be recited by faithful people for the attainment of the fruit of every desire.

Verse 35 (shiva.uma.42.35)

puṣṭyarthamimamadhyāyaṁ paṭhedenaṁ śṛṇoti vā mucyate sarvapāpebhyo mokṣaṁ yāti na saṁśayaḥ

Whoever reads this chapter, or hears it, for the sake of well-being, is freed from all sins and attains liberation — of this there is no doubt.
