Vyasa said: When Suta had gone, the sages, greatly astonished, reflecting among themselves, said, "O lord of sages, what Vamadeva's teaching had indicated has today slipped from our memory — this is truly grievous for us."

Verse 2 (shiva.kailasa.10.2)

"When shall we again experience the sight of that foremost sage, which alone removes the flood of sorrow of the ocean of existence? Through the merit of worshipping Maheshvara, may that lord of sages now swiftly appear before us."

Verse 3 (shiva.kailasa.10.3)

iti cintāsamāviṣṭā munayo munipuṅgavam | vyāsaṁ sampūjya hṛtpadme tasthustaddarśanotsukāḥ

Thus absorbed in anxious thought, the sages worshipped the foremost of sages, Vyasa, in the lotus of their hearts, and remained there, eager for his sight.

Verse 4 (shiva.kailasa.10.4)

saṁvatsarānte sa punaḥ kāśīṁ prāpa mahāmuniḥ | śivabhaktirato jñānī purāṇārthaprakāśakaḥ

At the end of the year, that great sage, devoted to the worship of Shiva, wise, the revealer of the meaning of the Puranas, came again to Kashi.

Verse 5 (shiva.kailasa.10.5)

taṁ dṛṣṭvā sūtamāyāntaṁ munayo hṛṣṭacetasaḥ | abhyutthānāsanārghyādipūjayā samapūjayan

Seeing Suta arriving, the sages, glad at heart, honored him with the worship of rising to greet him, offering a seat, arghya, and the rest.

so'pi tānmuniśārdūlānabhinandya smitodaram | prītyā snātvā jāhnavīye jale paramapāvane

He too, greeting those tigers among sages with a smile, having lovingly bathed in the supremely purifying waters of the Ganga —

Verse 7 (shiva.kailasa.10.7)

ṛṣīnsantarpya ca surān pitṝṁśca tilataṇḍulaiḥ | tīramāgatya samprokṣya vāsasī paridhāya ca

having offered tarpana with sesame and rice to the sages, the gods, and the ancestors, and having come to the bank, sipped water, and put on two garments —

Verse 8 (shiva.kailasa.10.8)

dvirācamya samādāya bhasma sadyādimantrataḥ | uddhūlanādikramato vidhāryātha munīśvaraḥ

having sipped water twice, taken up the sacred ash with the Sadyojata and other mantras, and applied it according to the rule of smearing, that lord of sages —

Verse 9 (shiva.kailasa.10.9)

rudrākṣamālābharaṇaḥ kṛtanityakriyaḥ sudhī | yathoktāṅgeṣu vidhinā tripuṇḍraṁ racati sma ha

adorned with a rosary of rudraksha beads, his daily rites accomplished, the wise Suta used to trace the triple-line mark on the prescribed parts of the body, according to rule.

Verse 10 (shiva.kailasa.10.10)

viśveśvaramumākāntaṁ sasutaṁ sagaṇādhipam | pūjayāmāsa sadbhaktyā hyastau natvā muhurmuhuḥ

He used to worship Vishveshvara, the beloved of Uma, together with his son and the lord of his attendants, with true devotion, bowing to him again and again.

Verse 11 (shiva.kailasa.10.11)

kālabhairavanāthaṁ ca sampūjyātha vidhānataḥ | pradakṣiṇīkṛtya punastredhā natvā ca pañcadhā

Then, having duly worshipped Lord Kalabhairava as well, and having circumambulated him, and bowed three times and then five times —

Verse 12 (shiva.kailasa.10.12)

punaḥ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya praṇamya bhuvi daṇḍavat | tuṣṭāva parayā stutyā saṁsmaraṁstatpadāmbujam

having circumambulated again, and prostrated flat upon the ground, he would please him with the highest praise, remembering his lotus feet.

Verse 13 (shiva.kailasa.10.13)

śrīmatpañcākṣarīṁ vidyāmaṣṭottarasahasrakam | sañjapya purataḥ sthitvā kṣamāpayya maheśvaram

Having recited the glorious five-syllabled vidya one thousand and eight times, and standing before him, having asked Maheshvara's forgiveness —

Verse 14 (shiva.kailasa.10.14)

caṇḍīśaṁ samprapūjyā'tha muktimaṇḍapamadhyataḥ | nirdiṣṭamāsanaṁ bheje munibhirvedapāragaiḥ

having then duly worshipped Chandisha, he would take up the seat assigned to him amid the Mukti-mandapa by the sages learned in the Veda.

Verse 15 (shiva.kailasa.10.15)

evaṁ sthiteṣu sarveṣu namaskṛtya samantrakam | atha prāha munīndrāṇāṁ bhāvavṛddhikaraṁ vaca

When all had thus taken their places, and he had bowed with the appropriate mantra, he then spoke words that increased the ardor of the foremost sages.

Verse 16 (shiva.kailasa.10.16)

sūta uvāca | dhanyā yūyaṁ mahāprājñā munayaḥ śaṁsitavratāḥ | bhavadarthamiha prāpto'haṁ tadvṛttamidaṁ śṛṇu

Suta said: "Blessed are you, O most wise sages of steadfast vows! I have come here for your sake alone; now hear this account."

Verse 17 (shiva.kailasa.10.17)

yadāhamupadiśyātha bhavataḥ praṇavārthakam | gatastīrthāṭanārthāya tadvṛttāntaṁ bravīmi vaḥ

"After I had taught you the meaning of the Pranava and set out for pilgrimage to holy places, I shall now tell you what happened thereafter."

Verse 18 (shiva.kailasa.10.18)

ito nirgatya samprāpya tīraṁ dakṣapayonidheḥ | snātvā sampūjya vidhivaddevīṁ kanyāmayīṁ śivām | punarāgatya viprendrāḥ suvarṇamukharītaṭam

Setting out from here and reaching the shore of the southern ocean, having bathed and duly worshipped the goddess Shiva in her maiden form, and having returned, O foremost of brahmins, to the bank of the Suvarnamukhari river —

Verse 19 (shiva.kailasa.10.19)

śrīkālahastiśailākhyanagare paramādbhute | suvarṇamukharītoye snātvā devānṛṣīnapi

in the supremely wondrous city called Shri Kalahasti-shaila, having bathed in the waters of the Suvarnamukhari, and having also [honored] the gods and sages —

Verse 20 (shiva.kailasa.10.20)

santarpya vidhivadbhaktyā samudraṁ giriśaṁ smaran | samarcya kālahastīśaṁ candrakāntasamaprabham

having duly offered tarpana with devotion, remembering Girisha, the ocean [of compassion], and having worshipped Kalahastisha, who shines with the radiance of the moonstone —

Verse 21 (shiva.kailasa.10.21)

paścimābhimukhaṁ pañcaśirasaṁ paramādbhutam | sakṛddarśanamātreṇa sarvāghakṣayakāraṇam

who faces west, has five heads, is supremely wondrous, and by the mere sight of him even once, is the cause of the destruction of all sins —

Verse 22 (shiva.kailasa.10.22)

sarvasiddhipradaṁ bhuktimuktidaṁ triguṇeśvaram | tataśca parayā bhaktyā tasya dakṣiṇagāṁ śivām

who grants all accomplishments, gives both enjoyment and liberation, and is lord of the three gunas — then, with utmost devotion, [I worshipped] Shiva seated to his right —

Verse 23 (shiva.kailasa.10.23)

jñānaprasūnakalikāṁ samarcya hi jagatprasūm | śrīmatpañcākṣarīṁ vidyāmaṣṭottarasahasrakam

the bud of the flower of knowledge, the mother of the world, and recited the glorious five-syllabled vidya one thousand and eight times —

Verse 24 (shiva.kailasa.10.24)

japtvā pradakṣiṇīkṛtya stutvā natvā muhurmuhuḥ

having recited it, circumambulated, and praised and bowed again and again.

tataḥ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya giriṁ pratyahamādarāt | āmodatīva manasi pratyahaṁ niyamāsthitaḥ

Then, respectfully circumambulating that mountain every day, remaining fixed in my vow, I became exceedingly joyful in mind day after day.

Verse 26 (shiva.kailasa.10.26)

One day, having spread bark-cloth, deerskin, and kusha grass, and having sat upon that supreme seat with senses restrained, that sage —

Verse 28 (shiva.kailasa.10.28)

samādhimāsthāya sadā paramānandacidghanaḥ | paripūrṇaḥ śivo'smīti nirvyagrahṛdayo'bhavam

established ever in samadhi, a mass of supreme bliss and consciousness, became free of all agitation of heart, thinking, "I am the perfect, complete Shiva."

Verse 29 (shiva.kailasa.10.29)

At that very moment my Guru, an ocean of compassion, dark like a blue rain-cloud, bearing tawny matted locks like lightning —

Verse 30 (shiva.kailasa.10.30)

prāṁśuḥ kamaṇḍalūdaṇḍakṛṣṇājinadharaḥ svayam | bhasmāvadātasarvāṅgaḥ sarvalakṣaṇalakṣitaḥ

tall of stature, himself bearing a water-pot, a staff, and a black antelope skin, his whole body radiant with sacred ash, marked with every auspicious sign —

Verse 31 (shiva.kailasa.10.31)

tripuṇḍravilasadbhālo rudrākṣālaṅkṛtākṛtiḥ | padmapatrāruṇāyāmavistīrṇanayanadvayaḥ

his brow shining with the triple mark, his form adorned with rudraksha, his two eyes wide and red like lotus petals —

Verse 32 (shiva.kailasa.10.32)

prādurbhūya hṛdambhoje tadānīmeva satvaram | vimohitastadaivāsametadad bhutamāstikāḥ

appeared then and there, instantly, in the lotus of my heart. O believers, I was overcome at that moment — such a wondrous thing occurred.

Verse 33 (shiva.kailasa.10.33)

tata unmīlya nayane vilāpaṁ kṛtavānaham | āsīnmamāśrupātaśca girinirjharasannibhaḥ

Then, opening my eyes, I broke into lamentation; tears streamed from my eyes like a mountain torrent.

Verse 34 (shiva.kailasa.10.34)

etasminneva samaye śrutā vāgaśarīriṇī | vyomno mahādbhutā viprāstāmeva śṛṇutādarāt

At that very moment a most wondrous bodiless voice was heard from the sky — O brahmins, listen to it now with reverence.

Verse 35 (shiva.kailasa.10.35)

sūtaputra mahābhāga gaccha vārāṇasīṁ purīm | tatrāsanmunayaḥ pūrvamupadiṣṭāstvayādhunā

"O greatly fortunate son of Suta, go to the city of Varanasi. There are the sages whom you formerly instructed —

Verse 36 (shiva.kailasa.10.36)

tvadupāgamakalyāṇaṁ kāṅkṣante vivaśā bhṛśam | tiṣṭhanti te nirāhārā ityuktvā virarāma sā

they are longing intensely for the blessing of your arrival; helpless, they remain there without taking food." Having said this, the voice fell silent.

Verse 37 (shiva.kailasa.10.37)

tata utthāya tarasā devaṁ devīṁ ca bhaktitaḥ | pradakṣiṇīkṛtya punaḥ praṇamya bhuvi daṇḍavat

Then, rising swiftly, I circumambulated the God and the Goddess with devotion, and again prostrated flat upon the ground —

Verse 38 (shiva.kailasa.10.38)

dviṣaḍvāraṁ gurorājñāṁ vijñāya śivayoratha | kṣetrānnirgatya tarasā catvāriṁśaddināntare

and, having understood the Guru's command twelvefold, and having swiftly departed from that field of Shiva and Shiva, within forty days —

Verse 39 (shiva.kailasa.10.39)

āgato'smi muniśreṣṭhā anugṛhṇantu māmiha | mayā kimadya vaktavyaṁ bhavantastad bruvantu me

I have arrived here, O foremost sages; may you show me your favor. Tell me now what I should say — speak it to me yourselves.

Verse 40 (shiva.kailasa.10.40)

iti sūtavacaḥ śrutvā ṛṣayo hṛṣṭamānasāḥ | avocanmuniśārdūlaṁ vyāsaṁ natvā muhurmuhuḥ

Hearing these words of Suta, the glad-hearted sages, bowing again and again to Vyasa, the foremost of sages, spoke.
