The Rite of Renunciation
Verse 1 (shiva.kailasa.12.1)
श्रीब्रह्मण्य उवाच । साधुसाधु महाभाग वामदेव मुनीश्वर । त्वमतीव शिवे भक्तः शिवज्ञानवतां वरः
śrībrahmaṇya uvāca | sādhusādhu mahābhāga vāmadeva munīśvara | tvamatīva śive bhaktaḥ śivajñānavatāṁ varaḥ
Shri Brahmanya [Skanda] said: "Well said, well said, O greatly fortunate Vamadeva, lord of sages! You are exceedingly devoted to Shiva, foremost among those who possess the knowledge of Shiva."
Verse 2 (shiva.kailasa.12.2)
त्वया त्वविदितं किञ्चिन्नास्ति लोकेषु कुत्रचित् । तथापि तव वक्ष्यामि लोकानुग्रहकारिणः
tvayā tvaviditaṁ kiñcinnāsti lokeṣu kutracit | tathāpi tava vakṣyāmi lokānugrahakāriṇaḥ
"There is indeed nothing anywhere in the worlds unknown to you; yet even so, I shall tell it to you, for the sake of the world's benefit."
Verse 3 (shiva.kailasa.12.3)
लोकेऽस्मिन्पशवः सर्वे नानाशास्त्रविमोहिताः । वञ्चिताः परमेशस्य माययातिविचित्रया
loke'sminpaśavaḥ sarve nānāśāstravimohitāḥ | vañcitāḥ parameśasya māyayātivicitrayā
"In this world, all bound souls, deluded by various scriptures, are cheated by the exceedingly wondrous Maya of the Supreme Lord."
Verse 4 (shiva.kailasa.12.4)
न जानति परं साक्षात्प्रणवार्थं महेश्वरम् । सगुणं निर्गुणं ब्रह्म त्रिदेवजनकं परम्
na jānati paraṁ sākṣātpraṇavārthaṁ maheśvaram | saguṇaṁ nirguṇaṁ brahma tridevajanakaṁ param
"They do not know directly the Supreme, the meaning of the Pranava, Maheshvara — Brahman both with and without qualities, the supreme father of the three gods."
Verse 5 (shiva.kailasa.12.5)
दक्षिणं बाहुमुद्धृत्य शपथं प्रब्रवीमि ते । सत्यं सत्यं पुनः सत्यं सत्यं सत्यं पुनः पुनः
dakṣiṇaṁ bāhumuddhṛtya śapathaṁ prabravīmi te | satyaṁ satyaṁ punaḥ satyaṁ satyaṁ satyaṁ punaḥ punaḥ
"Raising my right arm, I declare this oath to you: it is true, true, again true; true, true, again and again true."
Verse 6 (shiva.kailasa.12.6)
प्रणवार्थः शिवः साक्षात्प्राधान्येन प्रकीर्तितः । श्रुतिषु स्मृतिशास्त्रेषु पुराणेष्वागमेषु च
praṇavārthaḥ śivaḥ sākṣātprādhānyena prakīrtitaḥ | śrutiṣu smṛtiśāstreṣu purāṇeṣvāgameṣu ca
"Shiva is directly declared, foremost above all, to be the meaning of the Pranava, in the Shrutis, in the Smriti-shastras, in the Puranas, and in the Agamas."
Verse 7 (shiva.kailasa.12.7)
यतो वाचो निवर्तन्ते अप्राप्य मनसा सह । आनन्दं यस्य वै विद्वान्न बिभेति कुतश्चन
yato vāco nivartante aprāpya manasā saha | ānandaṁ yasya vai vidvānna bibheti kutaścana
"He from whom words turn back, unable to reach him, together with the mind; knowing whose bliss, the wise man fears nothing from anywhere."
Verse 8 (shiva.kailasa.12.8)
यस्माज्जगदिदं सर्वं विधिविष्ण्विन्द्रपूर्वकम् । सह भूतेन्द्रियग्रामैः प्रथमं सम्प्रसूयते
yasmājjagadidaṁ sarvaṁ vidhiviṣṇvindrapūrvakam | saha bhūtendriyagrāmaiḥ prathamaṁ samprasūyate
"From whom this entire universe, beginning with Brahma, Vishnu, and Indra, together with the hosts of elements and senses, first arises —"
Verse 9 (shiva.kailasa.12.9)
न सम्प्रसूयते यो वै कुतश्चन कदाचन । यस्मिन्न भासते विद्युन्न च सूर्यो न चन्द्रमाः
na samprasūyate yo vai kutaścana kadācana | yasminna bhāsate vidyunna ca sūryo na candramāḥ
"— but who himself is never born from anything, at any time; in whom neither lightning shines, nor the sun, nor the moon,"
Verse 10 (shiva.kailasa.12.10)
यस्य भासा विभातीदं जगत्सर्वं समन्ततः । सर्वैश्वर्येण सम्पन्नो नाम्ना सर्वेश्वरः स्वयम्
yasya bhāsā vibhātīdaṁ jagatsarvaṁ samantataḥ | sarvaiśvaryeṇa sampanno nāmnā sarveśvaraḥ svayam
"— but by whose light alone this entire universe shines on every side; endowed with all lordship, himself named Sarveshvara, the Lord of all."
Verse 11 (shiva.kailasa.12.11)
यो वै मुमुक्षुभिर्ध्येयः शम्भुराकाशमध्यगः । सर्वव्यापी प्रकाशात्मा भासरूपो हि चिन्मयः
yo vai mumukṣubhirdhyeyaḥ śambhurākāśamadhyagaḥ | sarvavyāpī prakāśātmā bhāsarūpo hi cinmayaḥ
"He who is to be meditated upon by seekers of liberation, Shambhu, abiding in the midst of space, all-pervading, whose very self is light, whose form is radiance, made wholly of consciousness."
Verse 12 (shiva.kailasa.12.12)
यस्य पुंसः परा शक्तिर्भावगम्या मनोहरा । निर्गुणा स्वगुणैरेव निगूढा निष्कला शिवा
yasya puṁsaḥ parā śaktirbhāvagamyā manoharā | nirguṇā svaguṇaireva nigūḍhā niṣkalā śivā
"Of that Being, the transcendent Power — attainable only through devotion, enchanting, without qualities yet concealed within her own qualities, undivided — is Shiva, the Goddess."
Verse 13 (shiva.kailasa.12.13)
तदीयं त्रिविधं रूपं स्थूलं सूक्ष्मं परं ततः । ध्येयं मुमुक्षुभिर्नित्यं क्रमतो योगिभिर्मुने
tadīyaṁ trividhaṁ rūpaṁ sthūlaṁ sūkṣmaṁ paraṁ tataḥ | dhyeyaṁ mumukṣubhirnityaṁ kramato yogibhirmune
"His threefold form — gross, subtle, and beyond that, supreme — is to be meditated upon constantly and in due order by yogis and seekers of liberation, O sage."
Verse 14 (shiva.kailasa.12.14)
निष्कलः सर्वदेवानामादिदेवः सनातनः । ज्ञानक्रियास्वभावो यः परमात्मेति गीयते
niṣkalaḥ sarvadevānāmādidevaḥ sanātanaḥ | jñānakriyāsvabhāvo yaḥ paramātmeti gīyate
"He who is undivided, the primal eternal God of all gods, whose very nature is knowledge and action, is sung as the Supreme Self."
Verse 15 (shiva.kailasa.12.15)
तस्य देवाधिदेवस्य मूर्त्तिः साक्षात्सदाशिवः । पञ्चमन्त्रतनुर्देवः कलापञ्चकविग्रहः
tasya devādhidevasya mūrttiḥ sākṣātsadāśivaḥ | pañcamantratanurdevaḥ kalāpañcakavigrahaḥ
"The direct embodied form of that God of gods is Sadashiva — the god whose body consists of the five mantras, whose form is composed of the five kalas."
Verse 16 (shiva.kailasa.12.16)
शुद्धस्फटिकसङ्काशः प्रसन्नः शीतलद्युतिः । पञ्चवक्त्रो दशभुजस्त्रिपञ्चनयनः प्रभुः
śuddhasphaṭikasaṅkāśaḥ prasannaḥ śītaladyutiḥ | pañcavaktro daśabhujastripañcanayanaḥ prabhuḥ
"He resembles pure crystal, is serene, of cool radiance, with five faces, ten arms, and fifteen eyes, the Lord —"
Verse 17 (shiva.kailasa.12.17)
ईशानमुकुटोपेतः पुरुषास्यः पुरातनः । अघोरहृदयो वामदेवगुह्यप्रदेशवान्
īśānamukuṭopetaḥ puruṣāsyaḥ purātanaḥ | aghorahṛdayo vāmadevaguhyapradeśavān
"— crowned with the Ishana face above, bearing the Purusha face, the ancient one; with Aghora as his heart, and Vamadeva as his hidden region."
Verse 18 (shiva.kailasa.12.18)
सद्यपादश्च तन्मूर्त्तिः साक्षात्सकलनिष्कलः । सर्व्वज्ञत्वादिषट्शक्तिषडङ्गीकृतविग्रहः
sadyapādaśca tanmūrttiḥ sākṣātsakalaniṣkalaḥ | sarvvajñatvādiṣaṭśaktiṣaḍaṅgīkṛtavigrahaḥ
"With Sadyojata as his feet — that very form is directly both with-parts and partless, his body constituted in six limbs by the six powers, omniscience and the rest."
Verse 19 (shiva.kailasa.12.19)
शब्दादिशक्तिस्फुरितहृत्पङ्कजविराजितः । स्वशक्त्या वामभागे तु मनोन्मन्या विभूषितः
śabdādiśaktisphuritahṛtpaṅkajavirājitaḥ | svaśaktyā vāmabhāge tu manonmanyā vibhūṣitaḥ
"His heart-lotus radiant with the powers of sound and the other sense-objects; on his left side he is adorned with his own Power, Manonmani."
Verse 20 (shiva.kailasa.12.20)
मन्त्रादिषड्विधार्थानामर्थोपन्यासमार्गतः । समष्टिव्यष्टिभावार्थं वक्ष्यामि प्रणवात्मकम्
mantrādiṣaḍvidhārthānāmarthopanyāsamārgataḥ | samaṣṭivyaṣṭibhāvārthaṁ vakṣyāmi praṇavātmakam
"By the path of expounding the meaning of the six kinds of significance beginning with the mantra, I shall now declare the meaning, both collective and individual, of that which consists of the Pranava."
Verse 21 (shiva.kailasa.12.21)
उपदेशक्रमो ह्यादौ वक्तव्यः श्रूयतामयम् । चातुर्व्वर्ण्यं हि लोकेस्मिन्प्रसिद्धम्मानुषे मुने
upadeśakramo hyādau vaktavyaḥ śrūyatāmayam | cāturvvarṇyaṁ hi lokesminprasiddhammānuṣe mune
"First, the sequence of instruction must be told — hear it now. The fourfold division of varnas is well known in this world of men, O sage."
Verse 22 (shiva.kailasa.12.22)
त्रैवर्णिकानामेवात्र श्रुत्याचारसमन्वयः । शुश्रूषामात्रसारा हि शूद्राः श्रुतिबहिष्कृताः
traivarṇikānāmevātra śrutyācārasamanvayaḥ | śuśrūṣāmātrasārā hi śūdrāḥ śrutibahiṣkṛtāḥ
"Only for the three twice-born varnas is there a connection here with the conduct declared in the Shruti; the Shudras, whose whole substance is mere service, are excluded from the Shruti."
Verse 23 (shiva.kailasa.12.23)
त्रैवर्णिकानां सर्वेषां स्वस्वाश्रमरतात्मनाम् । श्रुतिस्मृत्युदितो धर्मोऽनुष्ठेयो नापरः क्वचित्
traivarṇikānāṁ sarveṣāṁ svasvāśramaratātmanām | śrutismṛtyudito dharmo'nuṣṭheyo nāparaḥ kvacit
"For all of the three varnas, each devoted to their own stage of life, the dharma declared in the Shruti and Smriti alone is to be practiced — no other, anywhere."
Verse 24 (shiva.kailasa.12.24)
श्रुतिस्मृत्युदितं कर्म कुर्वन्सिद्धिमवाप्स्यति । इत्युक्तं परमेशेन वेदमार्गप्रदर्शिना
śrutismṛtyuditaṁ karma kurvansiddhimavāpsyati | ityuktaṁ parameśena vedamārgapradarśinā
"'One who performs the rites declared in the Shruti and Smriti will attain accomplishment' — so said the Supreme Lord, the revealer of the path of the Veda."
Verse 25 (shiva.kailasa.12.25)
वर्णाश्रमाचारपुण्यैरभ्यर्च्य परमेश्वरम् । तत्सायुज्यं गताः सर्वे बहवो मुनिसत्तमाः
varṇāśramācārapuṇyairabhyarcya parameśvaram | tatsāyujyaṁ gatāḥ sarve bahavo munisattamāḥ
"By the merit of the conduct proper to their varna and ashrama, worshipping the Supreme Lord, many of the very best sages have attained union with him."
Verse 26 (shiva.kailasa.12.26)
ब्रह्मचर्येण मुनयो देवा यज्ञक्रियाध्वना । पितरः प्रजया तृप्ता इति हि श्रुतिरब्रवीत्
brahmacaryeṇa munayo devā yajñakriyādhvanā | pitaraḥ prajayā tṛptā iti hi śrutirabravīt
"'By celibate studentship the sages [are satisfied], the gods by the path of sacrificial rites, and the ancestors by offspring' — so indeed says the Shruti."
Verse 27 (shiva.kailasa.12.27)
एवं ऋणत्रयान्मुक्तो वानप्रस्थाश्रमं गतः । शीतोष्णसुखदुःखादिसहिष्णुर्विजितेन्द्रियः
evaṁ ṛṇatrayānmukto vānaprasthāśramaṁ gataḥ | śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkhādisahiṣṇurvijitendriyaḥ
"Thus, freed from the three debts, one who has gone to the forest-dweller stage, enduring cold, heat, pleasure, pain and the rest, with senses conquered,"
Verse 28 (shiva.kailasa.12.28)
तपस्वी विजिताहारो यमाद्यं योगमभ्यसेत् । यथा दृढतरा बुद्धिरविचाल्या भवेत्तथा
tapasvī vijitāhāro yamādyaṁ yogamabhyaset | yathā dṛḍhatarā buddhiravicālyā bhavettathā
"an ascetic of restrained diet, should practice yoga beginning with the yamas, so that the intellect becomes ever firmer and unshakeable."
Verse 29 (shiva.kailasa.12.29)
एवं क्रमेण शुद्धात्मा सर्वकर्म्माणि विन्यसेत् । संन्यस्य सर्वकर्म्माणि ज्ञानपूजापरो भवेत्
evaṁ krameṇa śuddhātmā sarvakarmmāṇi vinyaset | saṁnyasya sarvakarmmāṇi jñānapūjāparo bhavet
"Thus, in due course, one of purified soul should relinquish all ritual actions; having renounced all actions, one should become devoted solely to knowledge and worship."
Verse 30 (shiva.kailasa.12.30)
सा हि साक्षाच्छिवैक्येन जीवन्मुक्तिफलप्रदा । सर्वोत्तमा हि विज्ञेया निर्विकारा यतात्मनाम्
sā hi sākṣācchivaikyena jīvanmuktiphalapradā | sarvottamā hi vijñeyā nirvikārā yatātmanām
"That renunciation, through direct union with Shiva, bestows the fruit of liberation-while-living; it is to be known as the very best and changeless path for those of disciplined souls."
Verse 31 (shiva.kailasa.12.31)
तत्प्रकारमहं वक्ष्ये लोकानुग्रहकाम्यया । तव स्तेहान्महाप्राज्ञ सावधानतया शृणु
tatprakāramahaṁ vakṣye lokānugrahakāmyayā | tava stehānmahāprājña sāvadhānatayā śṛṇu
"I shall now describe the manner of it, out of desire for the world's benefit; out of affection for you, O greatly wise one, listen with full attention."
Verse 32 (shiva.kailasa.12.32)
सर्वशास्त्रार्थतत्त्वज्ञं वेदान्तज्ञानपारगम् । आचार्यमुपगच्छेत्स यतिर्मतिमतां वरम्
sarvaśāstrārthatattvajñaṁ vedāntajñānapāragam | ācāryamupagacchetsa yatirmatimatāṁ varam
"That renunciant should approach a teacher who knows the truth and meaning of all the scriptures, who has mastered the knowledge of the Vedanta, the best among the wise."
Verse 33 (shiva.kailasa.12.33)
तत्समीपमुपव्रज्य यथाविधि विचक्षणः । दीर्घदण्डप्रणामाद्यैस्तोषयेद्यत्नतः सुधीः
tatsamīpamupavrajya yathāvidhi vicakṣaṇaḥ | dīrghadaṇḍapraṇāmādyaistoṣayedyatnataḥ sudhīḥ
"Approaching near him, according to rule, the discerning, wise one should diligently please him with a full prostration and the rest."
Verse 34 (shiva.kailasa.12.34)
यो गुरुः स शिवः प्रोक्तो यः शिवः स गुरुः स्मृतः । इति निश्चित्य मनसा स्वविचारं निवेदयेत्
yo guruḥ sa śivaḥ prokto yaḥ śivaḥ sa guruḥ smṛtaḥ | iti niścitya manasā svavicāraṁ nivedayet
"'He who is the Guru is declared to be Shiva; he who is Shiva is remembered as the Guru' — having settled this firmly in mind, he should submit his own resolve."
Verse 35 (shiva.kailasa.12.35)
लब्धानुज्ञस्तु गुरुणा द्वादशाहं पयोव्रती । शुक्लपक्षे चतुर्थ्यां वा दशम्यां वा विधानतः
labdhānujñastu guruṇā dvādaśāhaṁ payovratī | śuklapakṣe caturthyāṁ vā daśamyāṁ vā vidhānataḥ
"Having obtained the Guru's permission, he should observe the milk-vow for twelve days; then, in the bright fortnight, on the fourth or the tenth lunar day, according to rule —"
Verse 36 (shiva.kailasa.12.36)
प्रातः स्नात्वा विशुद्धात्मा कृतनित्यक्रियः सुधीः । गुरुमाहूय विधिना नान्दीश्राद्धं समारभेत्
prātaḥ snātvā viśuddhātmā kṛtanityakriyaḥ sudhīḥ | gurumāhūya vidhinā nāndīśrāddhaṁ samārabhet
"having bathed at dawn, his self purified, his daily rites performed, the wise one should summon the Guru and begin, according to rule, the Nandi-shraddha."
Verse 37 (shiva.kailasa.12.37)
विश्वेदेवाः सत्यवसुसंज्ञावन्तः प्रकीर्तिताः । देवश्राद्धे ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेशाः कथितास्त्रयः
viśvedevāḥ satyavasusaṁjñāvantaḥ prakīrtitāḥ | devaśrāddhe brahmaviṣṇumaheśāḥ kathitāstrayaḥ
"The Vishvedevas are declared to bear the names Satya and Vasu; in the shraddha to the gods, three are named — Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesha."
Verse 38 (shiva.kailasa.12.38)
ऋषिश्राद्धे तु सम्प्रोक्ता देवक्षेत्रमनुष्यजाः । देवश्राद्धे तु वसुरुद्रादित्याः सम्प्रकीर्तिताः
ṛṣiśrāddhe tu samproktā devakṣetramanuṣyajāḥ | devaśrāddhe tu vasurudrādityāḥ samprakīrtitāḥ
"In the shraddha to the sages, those born of gods, of holy places, and of men are declared; in the shraddha to the gods, the Vasus, Rudras, and Adityas are proclaimed."
Verse 39 (shiva.kailasa.12.39)
चत्वारो मानुषश्राद्धे सनकाद्या मुनीश्वराः । भूतश्राद्धे पञ्च महाभूतानि च ततः परम्
catvāro mānuṣaśrāddhe sanakādyā munīśvarāḥ | bhūtaśrāddhe pañca mahābhūtāni ca tataḥ param
"In the human shraddha, four are named — Sanaka and the other lords of sages; in the shraddha to the elements, the five great elements, and beyond that —"
Verse 40 (shiva.kailasa.12.40)
चक्षुरादीन्द्रियग्रामो भूतग्रामश्चतुर्विधः । पितृश्राद्धे पिता तस्य पिता तस्य पिता त्रयः
cakṣurādīndriyagrāmo bhūtagrāmaścaturvidhaḥ | pitṛśrāddhe pitā tasya pitā tasya pitā trayaḥ
"— the host of senses beginning with the eye, and the fourfold host of beings. In the shraddha to the fathers: one's father, his father, and his father — three."
Verse 41 (shiva.kailasa.12.41)
मातृश्राद्धे मातृपितामह्यौ च प्रपितामही । आत्मश्राद्धे तु चत्वार आत्मा पितृपितामहौ
mātṛśrāddhe mātṛpitāmahyau ca prapitāmahī | ātmaśrāddhe tu catvāra ātmā pitṛpitāmahau
"In the shraddha to the mothers: mother, paternal grandmother, and great-grandmother. In the shraddha to the self, four: the self, the father, the paternal grandfather,"
Verse 42 (shiva.kailasa.12.42)
प्रपितामहनामा च सपत्नीकाः प्रकीर्तिताः । मातामहात्मकश्राद्धे त्रयो मातामहादयः
prapitāmahanāmā ca sapatnīkāḥ prakīrtitāḥ | mātāmahātmakaśrāddhe trayo mātāmahādayaḥ
"and the one named great-great-grandfather — all declared together with their wives. In the shraddha centered on the maternal grandfather, three are named, beginning with him."
Verse 43 (shiva.kailasa.12.43)
प्रतिश्राद्धं ब्राह्मणानां युग्मं कृत्वोपकल्पितान् । आहूय पादौ प्रक्षाल्य स्वयमाचम्य यत्नतः
pratiśrāddhaṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ yugmaṁ kṛtvopakalpitān | āhūya pādau prakṣālya svayamācamya yatnataḥ
"For each shraddha, having arranged a pair of invited brahmins, having washed their feet, and having himself carefully sipped water,"
Verse 44 (shiva.kailasa.12.44)
समस्तसम्पत्समवाप्तिहेतवः, समुत्थितापत्कुलधूमकेतवः । अपारसंसारसमुद्रसेतवः, पुनन्तु मां ब्राह्मणपादरेणवः
samastasampatsamavāptihetavaḥ, samutthitāpatkuladhūmaketavaḥ | apārasaṁsārasamudrasetavaḥ, punantu māṁ brāhmaṇapādareṇavaḥ
"'May the dust of brahmins' feet, the cause of every prosperity, the comet that burns away a family's calamities, the bridge across the boundless ocean of existence, purify me' —"
Verse 45 (shiva.kailasa.12.45)
आपद्धनध्वान्तसहस्रभानवः, समीहितार्थार्पणकामधेनवः । समस्ततीर्थाम्बुपवित्रमूर्त्तयो, रक्षन्तु मां ब्राह्मणपादपांसवः
āpaddhanadhvāntasahasrabhānavaḥ, samīhitārthārpaṇakāmadhenavaḥ | samastatīrthāmbupavitramūrttayo, rakṣantu māṁ brāhmaṇapādapāṁsavaḥ
"'— may the dust of brahmins' feet, a thousand suns dispelling the darkness of calamity, a wish-fulfilling cow granting one's desired ends, whose very form is the sacred water of all holy places, protect me' —"
Verse 46 (shiva.kailasa.12.46)
इति जप्त्वा नमस्कृत्य साष्टाङ्गं भुवि दण्डवत् । स्थित्वा तु प्राङ्मुखः शम्भोः पादाब्जयुगलं स्मरन्
iti japtvā namaskṛtya sāṣṭāṅgaṁ bhuvi daṇḍavat | sthitvā tu prāṅmukhaḥ śambhoḥ pādābjayugalaṁ smaran
"— having recited this, and having bowed with a full eightfold prostration flat upon the ground, then standing facing east, remembering the pair of Shambhu's lotus feet —"
Verse 47 (shiva.kailasa.12.47)
सपवित्रकरः शुद्ध उपवीती दृढासनः । प्राणायामत्रयं कुर्याच्छ्रुत्वा तिथ्यादिकं पुनः
sapavitrakaraḥ śuddha upavītī dṛḍhāsanaḥ | prāṇāyāmatrayaṁ kuryācchrutvā tithyādikaṁ punaḥ
"— with a purifying ring on his hand, pure, wearing the sacred thread, seated firmly, he should perform threefold breath-control, and, having had the date and other details announced,"
Verse 48 (shiva.kailasa.12.48)
मत्संन्यासाङ्गभूतं यद्विश्वेदेवादिकं तथा । श्राद्धमष्टविधं मातामहान्तं पार्वणेन वै
matsaṁnyāsāṅgabhūtaṁ yadviśvedevādikaṁ tathā | śrāddhamaṣṭavidhaṁ mātāmahāntaṁ pārvaṇena vai
"[he declares:] 'This eightfold shraddha, beginning with the Vishvedevas and ending with the maternal grandfather, forming part of my rite of renunciation, according to the Parvana rule —'"
Verse 49 (shiva.kailasa.12.49)
विधानेन करिष्यामि युष्मदाज्ञापुरःसरम् । एवं विधाय सङ्कल्पं दर्भानुत्तरतस्त्यजेत्
vidhānena kariṣyāmi yuṣmadājñāpuraḥsaram | evaṁ vidhāya saṅkalpaṁ darbhānuttaratastyajet
"'— I shall perform according to rule, preceded by your permission.' Having thus made this resolve, he should discard the kusha grass to the north."

उपस्पृश्याप उत्थाय वरणक्रममारभेत् । पवित्रपाणिः संस्पृश्य पाणी ब्राह्मणयोर्वदेत्
upaspṛśyāpa utthāya varaṇakramamārabhet | pavitrapāṇiḥ saṁspṛśya pāṇī brāhmaṇayorvadet
"Having touched water and risen, he should begin the sequence of formal invitation; with the purifying ring on his hand, touching the hands of the two brahmins, he should say —"

विश्वेदेवार्थ इत्यादि भवद्भ्यां क्षण इत्यपि
viśvedevārtha ityādi bhavadbhyāṁ kṣaṇa ityapi
'"For the sake of the Vishvedevas" and so forth, and also "may there be a moment's leisure for you both,"'
Verse 52 (shiva.kailasa.12.52)
प्रसादनीय इत्यन्तं सर्वत्रैवं विधिक्रमः । एवं समाप्य वरणं मण्डलानि प्रकल्पयेत्
prasādanīya ityantaṁ sarvatraivaṁ vidhikramaḥ | evaṁ samāpya varaṇaṁ maṇḍalāni prakalpayet
'ending with "you are to be graciously entreated" — everywhere this same order applies. Having thus completed the invitation, he should prepare the ritual mandalas.'
Verse 53 (shiva.kailasa.12.53)
उदगारभ्य दश च कृत्वाभ्यर्चनमक्षतैः । तेषु क्रमेण संस्थाप्य ब्राह्मणान् पादयोः पुनः
udagārabhya daśa ca kṛtvābhyarcanamakṣataiḥ | teṣu krameṇa saṁsthāpya brāhmaṇān pādayoḥ punaḥ
"Beginning from the north, having made ten such diagrams, and worshipped them with unbroken rice, he should seat the brahmins upon them in order, and then, at their feet —"
Verse 54 (shiva.kailasa.12.54)
विश्वेदेवादिनामानि ससंवबोधनमुच्चरेत् । इदं वः पाद्यमिति सकुशपुष्पाक्षतोदकैः
viśvedevādināmāni sasaṁvabodhanamuccaret | idaṁ vaḥ pādyamiti sakuśapuṣpākṣatodakaiḥ
"he should recite the names of the Vishvedevas and the rest with the address, saying 'this is your foot-water,' offering water together with kusha grass, flowers, and unbroken rice —"

पाद्यं दत्त्वा स्वयमपि क्षालिताङ्घ्रिरुदङ्मुखः । आचम्य युग्मक्लृप्तांस्तानासनेषूपवेश्य च
pādyaṁ dattvā svayamapi kṣālitāṅghrirudaṅmukhaḥ | ācamya yugmaklṛptāṁstānāsaneṣūpaveśya ca
"having offered the foot-water, and having himself, facing north, washed his own feet, sipped water, and seated those brahmins, arranged in pairs, upon their seats —"
Verse 56 (shiva.kailasa.12.56)
विश्वेदेवस्वरूपस्य ब्राह्मणस्येदमासनम् । इति दर्भासनं दत्त्वा दर्भपाणिः स्वयं स्थितः
viśvedevasvarūpasya brāhmaṇasyedamāsanam | iti darbhāsanaṁ dattvā darbhapāṇiḥ svayaṁ sthitaḥ
"[saying] 'this is the seat of the brahmin who embodies the Vishvedevas,' having offered a seat of kusha grass, he himself should stand holding kusha grass,"

अस्मिन्नान्दीमुखश्राद्धे विश्वेदेवार्थ इत्यपि । भवद्भ्यां क्षण इत्युक्त्वा क्रियतामिति संवदेत्
asminnāndīmukhaśrāddhe viśvedevārtha ityapi | bhavadbhyāṁ kṣaṇa ityuktvā kriyatāmiti saṁvadet
"and say: 'In this Nandimukha-shraddha, for the sake of the Vishvedevas, may there be a moment's leisure for you both' — then say, 'let it be performed.'"
Verse 58 (shiva.kailasa.12.58)
प्राप्नुतामिति सम्प्रोच्य भवन्ताविति संवदेत् । वदेतां प्राप्नुयावेति तौ च ब्राह्मणपुङ्गवौ
prāpnutāmiti samprocya bhavantāviti saṁvadet | vadetāṁ prāpnuyāveti tau ca brāhmaṇapuṅgavau
"Having said 'may you both receive it,' he should say 'you two are invited'; and those two excellent brahmins should reply, 'let it be so, we shall receive it.'"
Verse 59 (shiva.kailasa.12.59)
सम्पूर्णमस्तु सङ्कल्पसिद्धिरस्त्विति तान् प्रति । भवन्तोऽनुगृह्णन्त्विति प्रार्थयेद् द्विजपुङ्गवान्
sampūrṇamastu saṅkalpasiddhirastviti tān prati | bhavanto'nugṛhṇantviti prārthayed dvijapuṅgavān
"[He should then say,] 'May it be complete, may the resolve be accomplished,' and he should entreat those excellent brahmins, 'may you show me your favor.'"
Verse 60 (shiva.kailasa.12.60)
ततः शुद्धकदल्यादिपात्रेषु क्षालितेषु च । अन्नादिभोज्यद्रव्याणि दत्त्वा दर्भैः पृथक् पृथक्
tataḥ śuddhakadalyādipātreṣu kṣāliteṣu ca | annādibhojyadravyāṇi dattvā darbhaiḥ pṛthak pṛthak
"Then, in clean plantain-leaf and other vessels, duly washed, having placed the food and other eatables, separately marked out with kusha grass,"

परिस्तीर्य स्वयं तत्र परिषिच्योदकेन च । हस्ताभ्यामवलम्ब्याथ पात्रं प्रत्येकमादरात्
paristīrya svayaṁ tatra pariṣicyodakena ca | hastābhyāmavalambyātha pātraṁ pratyekamādarāt
"having himself spread the seats there, and sprinkled the food with water, and then, holding each vessel respectfully with both hands —"

पृथिवी ते पात्रमित्यादि कृत्वा तत्र व्यवस्थितान् । देवादींश्च चतुर्थ्यन्ताननूद्याक्षतसंयुतान्
pṛthivī te pātramityādi kṛtvā tatra vyavasthitān | devādīṁśca caturthyantānanūdyākṣatasaṁyutān
"having recited 'the earth is your vessel' and so forth, and having named the gods and the rest established there, in the dative case, along with unbroken rice —"
Verse 63 (shiva.kailasa.12.63)
उदग्गृहीत्वा स्वाहेति देवार्थेऽन्नं यजेत्पुनः । न ममेति वदेदन्ते सर्वत्रायं विधिक्रमः
udaggṛhītvā svāheti devārthe'nnaṁ yajetpunaḥ | na mameti vadedante sarvatrāyaṁ vidhikramaḥ
"having lifted it facing north, saying 'svaha,' he should again offer the food for the sake of the gods, and say at the end, 'it is not mine' — this procedure applies everywhere."
Verse 64 (shiva.kailasa.12.64)
यत्पादपद्मस्मरणाद्यस्य नामजपादपि । न्यूनं कर्म भवेत्पूर्णं तं वन्दे साम्बमीश्वरम्
yatpādapadmasmaraṇādyasya nāmajapādapi | nyūnaṁ karma bhavetpūrṇaṁ taṁ vande sāmbamīśvaram
"'By the mere remembrance of whose lotus feet, or even by the mere recitation of whose name, a deficient rite becomes complete — I bow to that Ishvara, together with Amba.'"
Verse 65 (shiva.kailasa.12.65)
इति जप्त्वा ततो ब्रूयान्मया कृतमिदं पुनः । नान्दीमुखश्राद्धमिति यथोक्तं च वदेत्ततः
iti japtvā tato brūyānmayā kṛtamidaṁ punaḥ | nāndīmukhaśrāddhamiti yathoktaṁ ca vadettataḥ
"Having recited this, he should then say, 'This Nandimukha-shraddha has thus been performed by me' — and he should speak accordingly, as prescribed."
Verse 66 (shiva.kailasa.12.66)
अस्त्विति ब्रूतेति च तान्प्रसाद्य द्विजपुङ्गवान् । विसृज्य स्वकरस्थोदं प्रणम्य भुवि दण्डवत्
astviti brūteti ca tānprasādya dvijapuṅgavān | visṛjya svakarasthodaṁ praṇamya bhuvi daṇḍavat
"[The brahmins reply] 'let it be so' — thus, having pleased those excellent brahmins, released the water in his hand, and prostrated flat upon the ground,"
Verse 67 (shiva.kailasa.12.67)
उत्थाय च ततो ब्रूयादमृतं भवतु द्विजान् । प्रार्थयेच्च परं प्रीत्या कृताञ्जलिरुदारधीः
utthāya ca tato brūyādamṛtaṁ bhavatu dvijān | prārthayecca paraṁ prītyā kṛtāñjalirudāradhīḥ
"and having risen, he should then say to the brahmins, 'may it become nectar,' and, generous of mind, with joined palms, entreat them further with love."
Verse 68 (shiva.kailasa.12.68)
श्रीरुद्रं चमकं सूक्तं पौरुषं च यथाविधि । चित्ते सदाशिवं ध्यात्वा जपेद् ब्रह्माणि पञ्च च
śrīrudraṁ camakaṁ sūktaṁ pauruṣaṁ ca yathāvidhi | citte sadāśivaṁ dhyātvā japed brahmāṇi pañca ca
"Meditating on Sadashiva in his heart, he should recite, according to rule, the Shri-Rudram, the Chamakam, and the Purusha-sukta."
Verse 69 (shiva.kailasa.12.69)
भोजनान्ते रुद्रसूक्तं क्षमापय द्विजान् पुनः । तन्मन्त्रेण ततो दद्यादुत्तरापोशणं पुरः
bhojanānte rudrasūktaṁ kṣamāpaya dvijān punaḥ | tanmantreṇa tato dadyāduttarāpośaṇaṁ puraḥ
"At the end of the meal, with the Rudra-sukta, he should again beg the brahmins' forgiveness; then, with that mantra, offer the after-meal sipping-water before them."
Verse 70 (shiva.kailasa.12.70)
प्रक्षालिताङ्घ्रिराचम्य पिण्डस्थानं व्रजेत्ततः । आसीनः प्राङ्मुखो मौनी प्राणायामत्रयं चरेत्
prakṣālitāṅghrirācamya piṇḍasthānaṁ vrajettataḥ | āsīnaḥ prāṅmukho maunī prāṇāyāmatrayaṁ caret
"Having washed his feet and sipped water, he should then proceed to the place for the pinda-offering; seated, facing east, silent, he should perform threefold breath-control."
Verse 71 (shiva.kailasa.12.71)
नान्दीमुखोक्तश्राद्धाङ्गं करिष्ये पिण्डदानकम् । इति सङ्कल्प्य दक्षादि समारभ्योदकान्तिकम्
nāndīmukhoktaśrāddhāṅgaṁ kariṣye piṇḍadānakam | iti saṅkalpya dakṣādi samārabhyodakāntikam
"'I shall now perform the offering of the pindas, forming part of the Nandimukha-shraddha declared above' — having made this resolve, beginning from the south, up to the water's edge,"

नव रेखाः समालिख्य प्रागग्रान्द्वादश क्रमात् । संस्तीर्य दर्भान्दक्षादिदेवादिस्थानपञ्चकम्
nava rekhāḥ samālikhya prāgagrāndvādaśa kramāt | saṁstīrya darbhāndakṣādidevādisthānapañcakam
"having drawn nine lines, and then, in due order, twelve more with tips eastward, and spread kusha grass, he marks out the fivefold arrangement of places for the gods and the rest,"

तूष्णीं दद्यात्साक्षतोदं त्रिषु स्थानेषु च क्रमात् । स्थानेष्वन्येषु मातृषु मार्ज्जयन्तास्ततः परम्
tūṣṇīṁ dadyātsākṣatodaṁ triṣu sthāneṣu ca kramāt | sthāneṣvanyeṣu mātṛṣu mārjjayantāstataḥ param
"he should silently offer water with unbroken rice, in order, in three places; in the other places, for the mother-goddesses, with the Marjayantah hymn, and thereafter —"

अत्रेति पितरः पश्चात्साक्षतोदं समर्च्य च । दद्यात्ततः क्रमेणैव देवादिस्थानपञ्चके
atreti pitaraḥ paścātsākṣatodaṁ samarcya ca | dadyāttataḥ krameṇaiva devādisthānapañcake
"reciting 'here' for the ancestors, having worshipped with water and unbroken rice, he should offer it in order in the fivefold arrangement of places for the gods and the rest,"

तत्तद्देवादिनामानि चतुर्थ्यन्तान्युदीर्य च । पिण्डत्रयं ततो दद्यात्प्रत्येकं स्थानपञ्चके
tattaddevādināmāni caturthyantānyudīrya ca | piṇḍatrayaṁ tato dadyātpratyekaṁ sthānapañcake
"pronouncing the respective names of the gods and the rest in the dative case, and then offer three pindas each, in each of the five places,"

स्वगृह्योक्तेन मार्गेण दद्यात्पिण्डान्पृथक्पृथक् । दद्यादिदं साक्षतं च पितृसाद्गुण्यहेतवे
svagṛhyoktena mārgeṇa dadyātpiṇḍānpṛthakpṛthak | dadyādidaṁ sākṣataṁ ca pitṛsādguṇyahetave
"offering the pindas separately, according to the method of his own domestic text; he should offer this, with unbroken rice, for the well-being of the ancestors,"

ध्यायेत्सदाशिवं देवं हृदयाम्भोजमध्यतः । तत्पादपद्मस्मरणादिति श्लोकं पठन् पुनः
dhyāyetsadāśivaṁ devaṁ hṛdayāmbhojamadhyataḥ | tatpādapadmasmaraṇāditi ślokaṁ paṭhan punaḥ
"meditating upon the god Sadashiva in the midst of the lotus of his heart, reciting again the verse beginning 'by the remembrance of whose lotus feet...' —"

नमस्कृत्य ब्राह्मणेभ्यो दक्षिणां च स्वशक्तितः । दत्त्वा क्षमापय च तान् विसृज्य च ततः क्रमात्
namaskṛtya brāhmaṇebhyo dakṣiṇāṁ ca svaśaktitaḥ | dattvā kṣamāpaya ca tān visṛjya ca tataḥ kramāt
"having bowed to the brahmins, and given them a gift according to his means, and asked their forgiveness, he should then take leave of them in due order,"

पिण्डानुत्सृज्य गोग्रासं दद्यान्नो चेज्जले क्षिपेत् । पुण्याहवाचनं कृत्वा भुञ्जीत स्वजनैः सह
piṇḍānutsṛjya gogrāsaṁ dadyānno cejjale kṣipet | puṇyāhavācanaṁ kṛtvā bhuñjīta svajanaiḥ saha
"and, having removed the pindas, give a portion to a cow, or if that is not possible, cast it into water; then, having recited the Punyaha-vachana, he should eat with his family."

अन्येद्युः प्रातरुत्थाय कृतनित्यक्रियः सुधीः । उपोष्य क्षौरकर्मादि कक्षोपस्थविवर्जितम्
anyedyuḥ prātarutthāya kṛtanityakriyaḥ sudhīḥ | upoṣya kṣaurakarmādi kakṣopasthavivarjitam
"On the next day, rising at dawn, the wise one, having performed his daily rites and fasted, should undergo the shaving rite and the rest, excepting the armpits and private parts,"

केशश्मश्रुनखानेव कर्मावधि विसृज्य च । समाष्टिकेशान्विधिवत्कारयित्वा विधानतः
keśaśmaśrunakhāneva karmāvadhi visṛjya ca | samāṣṭikeśānvidhivatkārayitvā vidhānataḥ
"having had his hair, beard, and nails trimmed up to the rite's prescribed limit, and a single tuft of hair left, duly arranged according to rule,"

स्नात्वा धौतपटः शुद्धो द्विराचम्याथ वाग्यतः । भस्म सन्धार्य विधिना कृत्वा पुण्याहवाचनम्
snātvā dhautapaṭaḥ śuddho dvirācamyātha vāgyataḥ | bhasma sandhārya vidhinā kṛtvā puṇyāhavācanam
"having bathed, wearing washed garments, pure, having sipped water twice, then, silent, having applied the sacred ash according to rule, and performed the Punyaha-vachana,"

तेन सम्प्रोक्ष्य सम्प्राप्य शुद्धदेहस्वभावतः । होमद्रव्यार्थमाचार्यदक्षिणार्थं विहाय च
tena samprokṣya samprāpya śuddhadehasvabhāvataḥ | homadravyārthamācāryadakṣiṇārthaṁ vihāya ca
"having sprinkled that water and thereby become, in his very nature, of purified body, and having set aside what is needed for the fire-offering and the teacher's fee,"

द्रव्यजातं महेशाय द्विजेभ्यश्च विशेषतः । भक्तेभ्यश्च प्रदायाथ शिवाय गुरुरूपिणे
dravyajātaṁ maheśāya dvijebhyaśca viśeṣataḥ | bhaktebhyaśca pradāyātha śivāya gururūpiṇe
"he should offer the remaining goods especially to Mahesha, to the brahmins, and to the devotees, and then to Shiva in the form of the Guru —"

वस्त्रादि दक्षिणां दत्त्वा प्रणम्य भुवि दण्डवत् । दोरकौपीनवसनं दण्डाद्यं क्षालितं भुवि
vastrādi dakṣiṇāṁ dattvā praṇamya bhuvi daṇḍavat | dorakaupīnavasanaṁ daṇḍādyaṁ kṣālitaṁ bhuvi
"having given cloth and other gifts as dakshina, and prostrated flat upon the ground; then, taking up the girdle-cord, loincloth, garment, staff and the rest, washed on the ground,"

आदाय होमद्रव्याणि समिधादीनि च क्रमात् । समुद्रतीरे नद्यां वा पर्वते वा शिवालये
ādāya homadravyāṇi samidhādīni ca kramāt | samudratīre nadyāṁ vā parvate vā śivālaye
"and taking up the fire-offering materials, kindling-wood and the rest, in order, he should go to the seashore, or a river, a mountain, or a temple of Shiva,"

अरण्ये चापी गोष्ठे वा विचार्य स्थानमुत्तमम् । स्थित्वाचम्य ततः पूर्वं कृत्वा मानसमञ्जरीम्
araṇye cāpī goṣṭhe vā vicārya sthānamuttamam | sthitvācamya tataḥ pūrvaṁ kṛtvā mānasamañjarīm
"or a forest, or even a cow-pen — having chosen the best place, taken his stand there, sipped water, and first performed the 'mental bouquet' offering,"

ब्राह्ममोङ्कारसहितं नमो ब्रह्मण इत्यपि । जपित्वा त्रिस्ततो ब्रूयादग्निमीले पुरोहितम्
brāhmamoṅkārasahitaṁ namo brahmaṇa ityapi | japitvā tristato brūyādagnimīle purohitam
"having recited the Brahma-mantra together with Om, and also 'homage to Brahman,' three times, he should then recite the opening of the Rigveda, 'Agnim ile purohitam' —"

अथ महाव्रतमिति अग्निर्वै देवनामतः । तथैतस्य समाम्नायमिषे त्वोर्ज्जेत्वा वेति तत्
atha mahāvratamiti agnirvai devanāmataḥ | tathaitasya samāmnāyamiṣe tvorjjetvā veti tat
"then 'the great vow,' 'Agni indeed is first among the names of the gods,' and likewise its traditional recitation, 'ishe tvorje tva' and the rest,"

अग्न आयाहि वीतये शन्नो देवीरभिष्टये । पश्चात्प्रोच्य मयरसतजभनलगैः सह
agna āyāhi vītaye śanno devīrabhiṣṭaye | paścātprocya mayarasatajabhanalagaiḥ saha
"'Agna ayahi vitaye,' 'shan no devir abhishtaye'; and after reciting these, together with the mnemonic syllables for the Vedic metrical feet,"

सम्मितं च ततः पञ्चसंवत्सरमयं ततः । समाम्नायः समाम्नातः अथ शिक्षां वदेत्पुनः । प्रवक्ष्यामीत्युदीर्याथ वृद्धिरादैच्च संवदेत्
sammitaṁ ca tataḥ pañcasaṁvatsaramayaṁ tataḥ | samāmnāyaḥ samāmnātaḥ atha śikṣāṁ vadetpunaḥ | pravakṣyāmītyudīryātha vṛddhirādaicca saṁvadet
"and then 'the year-cycle of five years, thus measured' — the traditional recitation duly recited — he should recite the Shiksha, saying 'I shall now declare it,' then 'vriddhir ad-aic' —"

अथातो धर्मजिज्ञासेत्युच्चार्य पुनरञ्जसा । अथातो ब्रह्मजिज्ञासा वेदादीनपि सञ्जपेत्
athāto dharmajijñāsetyuccārya punarañjasā | athāto brahmajijñāsā vedādīnapi sañjapet
"and then, reciting directly, 'now, therefore, the inquiry into dharma,' and 'now, therefore, the inquiry into Brahman,' he should also recite the Vedas and the rest,"

ब्रह्माणमिन्द्रं सूर्यं च सोमं चैव प्रजापतिम् । आत्मानमन्तरात्मानं ज्ञानात्मानमतः परम्

"invoking, in turn, Brahma, Indra, Surya, and Soma, and Prajapati, the Self, the inner Self, the Self of knowledge, and beyond that,"

परमात्मानमपि च प्रणवाद्यं नमोन्तकम् । चतुर्थ्यन्तं जपित्वाऽथ सक्तुमुष्टिं प्रगृह्य च
paramātmānamapi ca praṇavādyaṁ namontakam | caturthyantaṁ japitvā'tha saktumuṣṭiṁ pragṛhya ca
"the Supreme Self as well — reciting each name preceded by the Pranava and ending in 'namah,' in the dative case; then, taking a handful of roasted-barley flour,"

प्राश्याथ प्रणवेनैव द्विराचम्याथ संस्पृशेत् । नाभिं मन्त्रान्वक्ष्यमाणं प्रणवाद्यान्नमोऽन्तकान्
prāśyātha praṇavenaiva dvirācamyātha saṁspṛśet | nābhiṁ mantrānvakṣyamāṇaṁ praṇavādyānnamo'ntakān
"having eaten it with the Pranava alone, and sipped water twice, he should then touch his navel with the mantras about to be stated, each preceded by the Pranava and ending in 'namah,'"
Verse 96 (shiva.kailasa.12.96)
आत्मानमन्तरात्मानं ज्ञानात्मानं पुरं पुनः । आत्मानं च समुच्चार्य प्रजापतिमतः परम्
ātmānamantarātmānaṁ jñānātmānaṁ puraṁ punaḥ | ātmānaṁ ca samuccārya prajāpatimataḥ param
"pronouncing together 'the Self,' 'the inner Self,' 'the Self of knowledge,' 'the city' [the body], again 'the Self,' and beyond that, Prajapati,"
Verse 97 (shiva.kailasa.12.97)
स्वाहान्तान्प्रजपेत्पश्चात्पयोदधिघृतं पृथक् । त्रिवारं प्रणवेनैव प्राश्याचम्य द्विधा पुनः
svāhāntānprajapetpaścātpayodadhighṛtaṁ pṛthak | trivāraṁ praṇavenaiva prāśyācamya dvidhā punaḥ
"each ending in 'svaha,' he should recite them; then, three times, with the Pranava alone, he should partake separately of milk, curd, and ghee, and sip water twice again,"
Verse 98 (shiva.kailasa.12.98)
प्रागास्य उपविश्याथ दृढचित्तः स्थिरासनः । यथोक्तविधिना सम्यक्प्राणायामत्रयं चरेत्
prāgāsya upaviśyātha dṛḍhacittaḥ sthirāsanaḥ | yathoktavidhinā samyakprāṇāyāmatrayaṁ caret
"and, sitting facing east, firm of mind, steady in posture, he should properly perform the threefold breath-control according to the rule already stated."
