Verse 1 (shiva.kailasa.18.1)

शौनक उवाच । श्रुत्वा वेदान्तसारं तद्रहस्यं परमाद्भुतम् । किं पृष्टवान् वामदेवो महेश्वरसुतं तदा

śaunaka uvāca | śrutvā vedāntasāraṁ tadrahasyaṁ paramādbhutam | kiṁ pṛṣṭavān vāmadevo maheśvarasutaṁ tadā

Shaunaka said: "Having heard that most wondrous secret, the essence of Vedanta, what did Vamadeva then ask of the son of Maheshvara?"

Verse 2 (shiva.kailasa.18.2)

धन्यो योगी वामदेवः शिवज्ञानरतः सदा । यत्सम्बन्धात्कथोत्पन्ना दिव्या परमपावनी

dhanyo yogī vāmadevaḥ śivajñānarataḥ sadā | yatsambandhātkathotpannā divyā paramapāvanī

"Blessed is the yogi Vamadeva, ever devoted to the knowledge of Shiva, through whose connection this divine and supremely purifying narrative arose."

Verse 3 (shiva.kailasa.18.3)

इति श्रुत्वा मुनीनां तद्वचनं प्रेमगर्भितम् । सूतः प्राह प्रसन्नस्तान् शिवासक्तमना बुधः

iti śrutvā munīnāṁ tadvacanaṁ premagarbhitam | sūtaḥ prāha prasannastān śivāsaktamanā budhaḥ

Hearing this love-filled speech of the sages, Suta, pleased and wise, his mind fixed on Shiva, spoke to them.

Verse 4 (shiva.kailasa.18.4)

सूत उवाच । धन्या यूयं महादेवभक्ता लोकोपकारकाः । शृणुध्वं मुनयः सर्वे संवादं च तयोः पुनः

sūta uvāca | dhanyā yūyaṁ mahādevabhaktā lokopakārakāḥ | śṛṇudhvaṁ munayaḥ sarve saṁvādaṁ ca tayoḥ punaḥ

Suta said: "Blessed are you, devotees of Mahadeva, benefactors of the world; hear now, O sages all, the further dialogue of those two."

Verse 5 (shiva.kailasa.18.5)

श्रुत्वा महेशतनयवचनं द्वैतनाशकम् । अद्वैतज्ञानजनकं सन्तुष्टोऽभून्महान्मुनिः

śrutvā maheśatanayavacanaṁ dvaitanāśakam | advaitajñānajanakaṁ santuṣṭo'bhūnmahānmuniḥ

Having heard the words of the son of Mahesha, which destroy duality and beget non-dual knowledge, the great sage became content.

Verse 6 (shiva.kailasa.18.6)

नत्वा स्तुत्वा च विविधं कार्तिकेयं शिवात्मजम् । पुनः पप्रच्छ तत्त्वं हि विनयेन महामुनिः

natvā stutvā ca vividhaṁ kārtikeyaṁ śivātmajam | punaḥ papraccha tattvaṁ hi vinayena mahāmuniḥ

Bowing to and praising Kartikeya, the son of Shiva, in various ways, the great sage again humbly asked about the truth.

Verse 7 (shiva.kailasa.18.7)

वामदेव उवाच । भगवन्सर्वतत्त्वज्ञ षण्मुखामृतवारिधे । गुरुत्वं कथमेतेषां यतीनां भावितात्मनाम्

vāmadeva uvāca | bhagavansarvatattvajña ṣaṇmukhāmṛtavāridhe | gurutvaṁ kathameteṣāṁ yatīnāṁ bhāvitātmanām

Vamadeva said: "O Lord, knower of all truths, O six-faced ocean of nectar — how does guruhood arise for these renunciants of cultivated mind?"

Verse 8 (shiva.kailasa.18.8)

जीवानां भोगमोक्षादिसिद्धिः सिध्यति यद्वशात् । पारम्पर्यं विना नैषामुपदेशाधिकारिता

jīvānāṁ bhogamokṣādisiddhiḥ sidhyati yadvaśāt | pāramparyaṁ vinā naiṣāmupadeśādhikāritā

"By whose power is accomplished the attainment of enjoyment, liberation and the rest for souls? Without a lineage of succession, they have no authority to teach."

Verse 9 (shiva.kailasa.18.9)

एवं च क्षौरकर्माङ्गं स्नानं च कथमीदृशम् । इति विज्ञापय स्वामिन् संशयं छेत्तुमर्हसि

evaṁ ca kṣaurakarmāṅgaṁ snānaṁ ca kathamīdṛśam | iti vijñāpaya svāmin saṁśayaṁ chettumarhasi

"And likewise, of what kind is the rite of tonsure and bathing as a limb of this? Please explain, O Lord — resolve this doubt."

Verse 10 (shiva.kailasa.18.10)

इति श्रुत्वा कार्तिकेयो वामदेववचः स्मरन् । शिवं शिवां च मनसा व्याचष्टुमुपचक्रमे

iti śrutvā kārtikeyo vāmadevavacaḥ smaran | śivaṁ śivāṁ ca manasā vyācaṣṭumupacakrame

Having heard this, Kartikeya, recalling Vamadeva's words and calling to mind Shiva and Shiva's consort, began to explain.

Verse 11 (shiva.kailasa.18.11)

श्रीसुब्रह्मण्य उवाच । योगपट्टं प्रवक्ष्यामि गुरुत्वं येन जायते । तव स्नेहाद्वामदेव महद्गोप्यं विमुक्तिदम्

śrīsubrahmaṇya uvāca | yogapaṭṭaṁ pravakṣyāmi gurutvaṁ yena jāyate | tava snehādvāmadeva mahadgopyaṁ vimuktidam

Shri Subrahmanya said: "I shall now declare the yoga-patta, by which guruhood arises — out of affection for you, O Vamadeva, this great secret that bestows liberation."

Verse 12 (shiva.kailasa.18.12)

वैशाखे श्रावणे मासि तथाश्वयुजि कार्तिके । मार्गशीर्षे च माघे वा शुक्लपक्षे शुभे दिने

vaiśākhe śrāvaṇe māsi tathāśvayuji kārtike | mārgaśīrṣe ca māghe vā śuklapakṣe śubhe dine

"In the months of Vaishakha, Shravana, Ashvina, Kartika, Margashirsha, or Magha, on an auspicious day of the bright fortnight —"

Verse 13 (shiva.kailasa.18.13)

पञ्चम्यां पौर्णमास्यां वा कृतप्राभातिकक्रियः । लब्धानुज्ञस्तु गुरुणा स्नात्वा नियतमानसः

pañcamyāṁ paurṇamāsyāṁ vā kṛtaprābhātikakriyaḥ | labdhānujñastu guruṇā snātvā niyatamānasaḥ

"— on the fifth tithi or the full moon, having performed the morning rites and received the guru's permission, he should bathe with a restrained mind."

Verse 14 (shiva.kailasa.18.14)

पर्यङ्कशौचं कृत्वा तद्वाससाङ्गं प्रमृज्य च । द्विगुणं दोरमाबध्य वाससी परिधाय च

paryaṅkaśaucaṁ kṛtvā tadvāsasāṅgaṁ pramṛjya ca | dviguṇaṁ doramābadhya vāsasī paridhāya ca

"Having purified his seat, wiped his body with that cloth, tied a doubled waist-cord, and put on the two garments —"

Verse 15 (shiva.kailasa.18.15)

क्षालिताङ्घ्रिर्द्विराचम्य भस्म सद्यादिमन्त्रतः । धारयेद्धि समादाय समुद्धूलनमार्गतः

kṣālitāṅghrirdvirācamya bhasma sadyādimantrataḥ | dhārayeddhi samādāya samuddhūlanamārgataḥ

"— his feet washed, having sipped water twice, he should take up the sacred ash with the Sadyojata and other mantras and apply it over his whole body."

Verse 16 (shiva.kailasa.18.16)

गृहीतहस्तो गुरुणा सानुकूलेन वै मुने । स शिष्यः साञ्जलिः स्वाभ्यां हस्ताभ्यां प्राङ्मुखो यथा

gṛhītahasto guruṇā sānukūlena vai mune | sa śiṣyaḥ sāñjaliḥ svābhyāṁ hastābhyāṁ prāṅmukho yathā

"O sage, that disciple, his hand taken by the favorably-disposed guru, palms joined, facing east —"

Verse 17 (shiva.kailasa.18.17)

तथोपवेष्टितस्तिष्ठेन्मण्डपे समलङ्कृते । गुर्वासनवरे शुद्धे चैलाजिनकुशोत्तरे

tathopaveṣṭitastiṣṭhenmaṇḍape samalaṅkṛte | gurvāsanavare śuddhe cailājinakuśottare

"— thus seated, should remain in the well-adorned pavilion, upon the guru's excellent pure seat spread with cloth, deerskin, and kusha grass."

Verse 18 (shiva.kailasa.18.18)

अथ देशिक आदाय शङ्खं साधारमस्त्रतः । विशोध्य तस्य पुरतः स्थापयेत्सानुकूलतः

atha deśika ādāya śaṅkhaṁ sādhāramastrataḥ | viśodhya tasya purataḥ sthāpayetsānukūlataḥ

"Then the preceptor, taking up the conch with its stand, having purified it with the astra-mantra, should place it favorably before him."

Verse 19 (shiva.kailasa.18.19)

साधारं शङ्खमपि च सम्पूज्य कुसुमादिभिः । निःक्षिपेदस्त्रवर्मभ्यां शोधितं तत्र सज्जलम्

sādhāraṁ śaṅkhamapi ca sampūjya kusumādibhiḥ | niḥkṣipedastravarmabhyāṁ śodhitaṁ tatra sajjalam

"Having worshipped the conch with its stand with flowers and the rest, he should pour into it water purified by the astra and varma mantras."

Verse 20 (shiva.kailasa.18.20)

आपूर्य पूर्ववत्पूज्य षडङ्गोक्तक्रमेण च । प्रणवेन पुनस्तद्वै सप्तधैवाभिमन्त्रयेत्

āpūrya pūrvavatpūjya ṣaḍaṅgoktakrameṇa ca | praṇavena punastadvai saptadhaivābhimantrayet

"Having filled it as before and worshipped it in the prescribed six-limbed manner, he should again consecrate it sevenfold with the Pranava."

Verse 21 (shiva.kailasa.18.21)

अभ्यर्च्य गन्धपुष्पाद्यैर्धूपदीपौ प्रदर्श्य च । संरक्ष्यास्त्रेण तं शङ्खं वर्मणाथावगुण्ठयेत्

abhyarcya gandhapuṣpādyairdhūpadīpau pradarśya ca | saṁrakṣyāstreṇa taṁ śaṅkhaṁ varmaṇāthāvaguṇṭhayet

"Having worshipped it with sandal-paste, flowers and the rest, and shown incense and lamp, he should protect that conch with the astra-mantra and veil it with the varma-mantra."

Verse 22 (shiva.kailasa.18.22)

धेनुशङ्खाख्यमुद्रे च दर्शयेदथ देशिकः । पुनः स्वपुरतः शङ्खं दक्षिणे देश उत्तमे

dhenuśaṅkhākhyamudre ca darśayedatha deśikaḥ | punaḥ svapurataḥ śaṅkhaṁ dakṣiṇe deśa uttame

"The preceptor should then display the mudras called dhenu and shankha; then again place the conch before himself, in an excellent spot to the right."

Verse 23 (shiva.kailasa.18.23)

पूज्यार्घ्योक्तविधानेन सुन्दरं मण्डलं शुभम् । कुर्यात्सम्पूजयेत्तं च सुगन्धकुसुमादिभिः

pūjyārghyoktavidhānena sundaraṁ maṇḍalaṁ śubham | kuryātsampūjayettaṁ ca sugandhakusumādibhiḥ

"He should draw a beautiful, auspicious mandala according to the prescribed rule of worship and offering, and worship it well with fragrant flowers and the rest."

Verse 24 (shiva.kailasa.18.24)

साधारं शोधितं शुद्धं घटं तन्तुपरिष्कृतम् । धूपितं स्थापितं शुद्धवासितोदप्रपूरितम्

sādhāraṁ śodhitaṁ śuddhaṁ ghaṭaṁ tantupariṣkṛtam | dhūpitaṁ sthāpitaṁ śuddhavāsitodaprapūritam

"A pot, together with its stand, purified, adorned with thread, fumigated with incense, set in place, and filled with pure scented water —"

Verse 25 (shiva.kailasa.18.25)

पञ्चत्वक्पञ्चपत्रैश्च मृत्तिकाभिश्च पञ्चभिः । मिलितं च सुगन्धेन लेपयेत्तं मुनीश्वर

pañcatvakpañcapatraiśca mṛttikābhiśca pañcabhiḥ | militaṁ ca sugandhena lepayettaṁ munīśvara

"— O lord of sages, this he should smear with the five barks, the five leaves, and the five earths, blended with fragrance."

Verse 26 (shiva.kailasa.18.26)

वस्त्राम्रदलदूर्वाग्रनारिकेलसुमैस्ततः । तं घटं वस्तुभिश्चान्यैः सङ्कुर्यात्समलङ्कृतम्

vastrāmradaladūrvāgranārikelasumaistataḥ | taṁ ghaṭaṁ vastubhiścānyaiḥ saṅkuryātsamalaṅkṛtam

"Then, with cloth, mango leaves, durva-grass tips, coconut, flowers and other such articles, he should fully adorn that pot."

Verse 27 (shiva.kailasa.18.27)

विन्यसेत्पञ्चरत्नानि घटे तत्र मुनीश्वर । हिरण्यं चापि तेषां वाभावे भक्त्या प्रविन्यसेत्

vinyasetpañcaratnāni ghaṭe tatra munīśvara | hiraṇyaṁ cāpi teṣāṁ vābhāve bhaktyā pravinyaset

"O lord of sages, he should place the five gems in that pot; and, in their absence, devotedly place gold instead."

Verse 28 (shiva.kailasa.18.28)

नीलाख्यरत्नं च तथा रत्ने माणिक्यहेमनी । प्रवालगोमेदके च पञ्चरत्नमिदं स्मृतम्

nīlākhyaratnaṁ ca tathā ratne māṇikyahemanī | pravālagomedake ca pañcaratnamidaṁ smṛtam

"Sapphire, likewise ruby and topaz, coral, and gomeda — these are declared to be the five gems."

Verse 29 (shiva.kailasa.18.29)

नृम्लुस्कमिति सम्प्रोच्य ग्लूमित्यन्तेऽथ देशिकः । सम्यग्विधानतः प्रीत्या सानुकूलः समर्चयेत्

nṛmluskamiti samprocya glūmityante'tha deśikaḥ | samyagvidhānataḥ prītyā sānukūlaḥ samarcayet

"Uttering 'nṛmlusca' and ending with 'glūm,' the preceptor, favorably disposed and full of love, should worship duly according to procedure."

Verse 30 (shiva.kailasa.18.30)

आधारशक्तिमारभ्य यजनोक्तविधानतः । पञ्चावरणमार्गेण देवमावाह्य पूजयेत्

ādhāraśaktimārabhya yajanoktavidhānataḥ | pañcāvaraṇamārgeṇa devamāvāhya pūjayet

"Beginning with the Adhara-shakti, according to the prescribed procedure of worship, he should invoke the deity by the method of the five enclosures and worship."

Verse 31 (shiva.kailasa.18.31)

निवेद्य पायसान्नं च ताम्बूलादि यथा पुरा । नामाष्टकार्चनान्तं च कृत्वा तमभिमन्त्रयेत्

nivedya pāyasānnaṁ ca tāmbūlādi yathā purā | nāmāṣṭakārcanāntaṁ ca kṛtvā tamabhimantrayet

"Having offered rice-pudding, betel and the rest as before, and completed worship ending with the eight names, he should consecrate it with mantra."

Verse 32 (shiva.kailasa.18.32)

प्रणवाष्टोत्तरशतं ब्रह्मभिः पञ्चभिः क्रमात् । सद्यादीशान्तमप्यस्त्रं रक्षितं वर्मणा पुनः

praṇavāṣṭottaraśataṁ brahmabhiḥ pañcabhiḥ kramāt | sadyādīśāntamapyastraṁ rakṣitaṁ varmaṇā punaḥ

"[He should recite] the Pranava one hundred and eight times, then in order the five Brahma-mantras from Sadyojata to Ishana, and again the astra-mantra, protected by the varma-mantra —"

Verse 33 (shiva.kailasa.18.33)

अवगुण्ठ्य प्रदर्श्याथ धूपदीपौ च भक्तितः । धेनुयोन्याख्यमुद्रे च सम्यक् तत्र प्रदर्शयेत्

avaguṇṭhya pradarśyātha dhūpadīpau ca bhaktitaḥ | dhenuyonyākhyamudre ca samyak tatra pradarśayet

"— having veiled it, and shown incense and lamp with devotion, he should there duly display the mudras called dhenu and yoni."

Verse 34 (shiva.kailasa.18.34)

ततश्च देशिकस्तस्य दर्भैराच्छाद्य मस्तकम् । मण्डलस्थेशदिग्भागे चतुरस्रं प्रकल्पयेत्

tataśca deśikastasya darbhairācchādya mastakam | maṇḍalastheśadigbhāge caturasraṁ prakalpayet

"Then the preceptor, having covered his head with kusha grass, should mark out a square in the north-eastern quarter of the mandala."

Verse 35 (shiva.kailasa.18.35)

तदुपर्यासनं रम्यं कल्पयित्वा विधानतः । तत्र संस्थापयेच्छिष्यं तं शिशुं सानुकूलतः

taduparyāsanaṁ ramyaṁ kalpayitvā vidhānataḥ | tatra saṁsthāpayecchiṣyaṁ taṁ śiśuṁ sānukūlataḥ

"Having duly prepared a beautiful seat upon it, he should there favorably seat that child-disciple."

Verse 36 (shiva.kailasa.18.36)

ततः कुम्भं समुत्थाप्य स्वस्तिवाचनपूर्वकम् । अभिषिञ्चेद् गुरुः शिष्यं प्रादक्षिण्येन मस्तके

tataḥ kumbhaṁ samutthāpya svastivācanapūrvakam | abhiṣiñced guruḥ śiṣyaṁ prādakṣiṇyena mastake

"Then, having lifted the pot, preceded by the recitation of blessings, the guru should anoint the disciple's head in a clockwise manner."

Verse 37 (shiva.kailasa.18.37)

प्रणवं पूर्वमुच्चार्य सप्तधा ब्रह्मभिस्ततः । पञ्चभिश्चाभिषेकान्ते शङ्खोदेनाभिवेष्टयेत्

praṇavaṁ pūrvamuccārya saptadhā brahmabhistataḥ | pañcabhiścābhiṣekānte śaṅkhodenābhiveṣṭayet

"Having first uttered the Pranava seven times, then the five Brahma-mantras, at the end of the anointing he should envelop him with the conch-water."

Verse 38 (shiva.kailasa.18.38)

चारुदीपं प्रदर्श्याथ वाससा परिमृज्य च । नूतनं दोरकौपीनं वाससी परिधापयेत्

cārudīpaṁ pradarśyātha vāsasā parimṛjya ca | nūtanaṁ dorakaupīnaṁ vāsasī paridhāpayet

"Having then shown a beautiful lamp and wiped him with a cloth, he should have him put on a new waist-cord, loincloth, and the two garments."

Verse 39 (shiva.kailasa.18.39)

क्षालिताङ्घ्रिर्द्विराचम्य धृतभस्मगुरुः शिशुम् । हस्ताभ्यामवलम्ब्याथ हस्तौ मण्डपमध्यतः

kṣālitāṅghrirdvirācamya dhṛtabhasmaguruḥ śiśum | hastābhyāmavalambyātha hastau maṇḍapamadhyataḥ

"His feet washed, having sipped water twice, the guru, wearing the ash, taking hold of the child with both hands, leads him to the middle of the pavilion."

Verse 40 (shiva.kailasa.18.40)

तदङ्गेषु समालिप्य तद्भस्म विधिना गुरुः । आसने सम्प्रवेश्याथ कल्पिते स्थापयेत्सुखम्

tadaṅgeṣu samālipya tadbhasma vidhinā guruḥ | āsane sampraveśyātha kalpite sthāpayetsukham

"Having duly smeared that ash upon his limbs, the guru, leading him in, should comfortably seat him upon the prepared seat."

Verse 41 (shiva.kailasa.18.41)

पूर्वाभिमुखमात्मीयतत्त्वज्ञानाभिलाषिणम् । स्वासनस्थो गुरुर्ब्रूयादमलात्मा भवेति तम्

pūrvābhimukhamātmīyatattvajñānābhilāṣiṇam | svāsanastho gururbrūyādamalātmā bhaveti tam

"To him, facing east and longing for knowledge of his own true nature, the guru, seated on his own seat, should say: 'Become one of pure self.'"

Verse 42 (shiva.kailasa.18.42)

गुरुश्च परिपूर्णोऽस्मि शिव इत्यचलस्थितिः । समाधिमाचरेत्सम्यङ् मुहूर्त्तं गूढमानसः

guruśca paripūrṇo'smi śiva ityacalasthitiḥ | samādhimācaretsamyaṅ muhūrttaṁ gūḍhamānasaḥ

"And the guru, in the unshakeable conviction 'I am the perfectly full Shiva,' should duly practice samadhi for a muhurta, his mind deeply withdrawn."

Verse 43 (shiva.kailasa.18.43)

पश्चादुन्मील्य नयने सानुकूलेन चेतसा । साञ्जलिं संस्थितं शुद्धं पश्येच्छिष्यमनाकुलः

paścādunmīlya nayane sānukūlena cetasā | sāñjaliṁ saṁsthitaṁ śuddhaṁ paśyecchiṣyamanākulaḥ

"Afterward, opening his eyes with a favorably disposed mind, he should look, undisturbed, upon the pure disciple standing with joined palms."

Verse 44 (shiva.kailasa.18.44)

स्वहस्तं भसितालिप्तं विन्यस्य शिशुमस्तके । दक्षश्रुतावुपदिशेद्धंसः सोऽहमिति स्फुटम्

svahastaṁ bhasitāliptaṁ vinyasya śiśumastake | dakṣaśrutāvupadiśeddhaṁsaḥ so'hamiti sphuṭam

"Placing his own ash-smeared hand upon the child's head, he should clearly instruct into his right ear: 'Haṁsaḥ so'ham — I am That.'"

Verse 45 (shiva.kailasa.18.45)

तत्राद्यहम्पदस्यार्थः शक्त्यात्मा स शिवः स्वयम् । स एवाहं शिवोऽस्मीति स्वात्मानं संविभावय

tatrādyahampadasyārthaḥ śaktyātmā sa śivaḥ svayam | sa evāhaṁ śivo'smīti svātmānaṁ saṁvibhāvaya

"There, the meaning of the first word 'I' has Shakti as its very self and is Shiva himself; 'that very I am Shiva' — thus contemplate your own self."

Verse 46 (shiva.kailasa.18.46)

य इत्यणोरर्थतत्त्वमुपदिश्य ततो वदेत् । अवान्तराणां वाक्यानामर्थतात्पर्यमादरात्

ya ityaṇorarthatattvamupadiśya tato vadet | avāntarāṇāṁ vākyānāmarthatātparyamādarāt

"Having taught the true meaning of the word 'that,' referring to the individual soul, he should then reverently explain the intended sense of the connecting statements."

Verse 47 (shiva.kailasa.18.47)

वाक्यानि वच्मि ते ब्रह्मन्सावधानमतिः शृणु । तानि धारय चित्ते हि स ब्रूयादिति संस्फुटम्

vākyāni vacmi te brahmansāvadhānamatiḥ śṛṇu | tāni dhāraya citte hi sa brūyāditi saṁsphuṭam

"'I shall speak the great statements to you, O brahmin; listen with careful attention, and hold them firmly in your heart' — thus he should clearly say."
