Vayaviya Samhita · Chapter 12
The Description of Creation
Verse 1 (shiva.vayaviya.12.1)
vāyuruvāca | sargaṁ cintayatastasya tadā vai buddhipūrvakam | pradhyānakāle mohastu prādurbhūtastamomayaḥ
Vayu said: As he was contemplating creation with deliberate intent, at the time of that deep meditation, a delusion composed of Tamas arose.
Verse 2 (shiva.vayaviya.12.2)
tamomoho mahāmohastāmisraścāndhasaṁjñitaḥ | avidyā pañcamī caiṣā prādurbhūtā mahātmanaḥ
Tamo-moha, Maha-moha, Tamisra, and that called Andha -- and this fifth, Avidya -- arose in that great being.
Verse 3 (shiva.vayaviya.12.3)
pañcadhā'vasthitaḥ sargo dhyāyatastvabhimāninaḥ | sarvatastamasātīva bījakumbhavadāvṛtaḥ
This fivefold creation arose from him as he meditated, full of self-conceit; it was utterly enveloped in darkness on every side, like a seed sealed within a jar.
Verse 4 (shiva.vayaviya.12.4)
bahirantaścāprakāśaḥ stabdho niḥsaṁjña eva ca | tasmātteṣāṁ vṛtā buddhirmukhāni karaṇāni ca
Unlit both without and within, rigid, and devoid of consciousness -- therefore their intellect, their openings, and their organs too remained enveloped.
Verse 5 (shiva.vayaviya.12.5)
tasmātte saṁvṛtātmāno nagā mukhyāḥ prakīrtitāḥ | taṁ dṛṣṭvāsādhakaṁ brahmā prathamaṁ sargamīdṛśam
Thus, being enveloped by their very nature, they are proclaimed as the 'Mukhya' creation, the immovable beings. Seeing that this first creation was unsatisfactory, Brahma --
Verse 6 (shiva.vayaviya.12.6)
aprasannamanā bhūtvā dvitīyaṁ so'bhyamanyata | tasyābhidhāyataḥ sargaṁ tiryyaksroto'bhyavarttata
-- becoming displeased in mind, resolved upon a second creation. As he meditated upon it, the horizontal-flowing creation of the animals came about.
Verse 7 (shiva.vayaviya.12.7)
antaḥprakāśāstiryyañca āvṛtāśca bahiḥ punaḥ | paśvātmānastato jātā utpathagrāhiṇaśca te
Luminous within, but the horizontal beings were again enveloped without; thus were born beings of animal nature, given to wayward paths.
Verse 8 (shiva.vayaviya.12.8)
tamapyasādhakaṁ jñātvā sargamanyamamanyata | tadordhvasrotaso vṛtto devasargastu sāttvikaḥ
Knowing that this too was unsatisfactory, he resolved upon another creation. Then arose the upward-flowing creation of the gods, which was Sattvic.
Verse 9 (shiva.vayaviya.12.9)
te sukhaprītibahulā bahirantaśca nāvṛtāḥ | prakāśā bahirantaśca svabhāvādeva saṁjñitāḥ
They were abundant in happiness and delight, unobstructed both within and without, luminous both within and without -- known by their very nature as such.
Verse 10 (shiva.vayaviya.12.10)
tato'bhidhyāyato'vyaktādarvāksrotastu sādhakaḥ | manuṣyanāmā sañjātaḥ sargo duḥkhasamutkaṭaḥ
Then, as he meditated further, from the Unmanifest arose the effective downward-flowing creation, called by the name 'Manushya' (human), a creation abounding in suffering.
Verse 11 (shiva.vayaviya.12.11)
prakāśā bahirantaste tamodriktā rajo'dhikāḥ | pañcamo'nugrahaḥ sargaścaturdhā saṁvyavasthitaḥ
They were luminous within and without, yet predominant in Tamas, with abundant Rajas. The fifth creation, called Anugraha, is fourfold.
Verse 12 (shiva.vayaviya.12.12)
viparyyeṇa śaktyā ca tuṣṭyā siddhyā tathaiva ca | te'parigrāhiṇaḥ sarve saṁvibhāgaratāḥ punaḥ
Viparyaya, Shakti, Tushti, and Siddhi -- these are its four divisions. All these beings, possessing nothing, delight again in mutual sharing.
Verse 13 (shiva.vayaviya.12.13)
khādanāścāpyaśīlāśca bhūtādyāḥ parikīrtitāḥ | prathamo mahataḥ sargo brahmaṇaḥ parameṣṭhinaḥ
Devourers and the ill-natured Bhutas and the like are also reckoned here. The first creation of Brahma the Supreme is that of the Mahat principle.
Verse 14 (shiva.vayaviya.12.14)
tanmātrāṇāṁ dvitīyastu bhūtasargaḥ sa ucyate | vaikārikastṛtīyastu sarga aindriyakaḥ smṛtaḥ
The second is the creation of the Tanmatras, called the Bhuta-creation. The third is the Vaikarika creation, remembered as the creation of the senses.
Verse 15 (shiva.vayaviya.12.15)
ityeṣa prakṛteḥ sargaḥ sambhṛto'buddhipūrvakaḥ | mukhyasargaścaturthastu mukhyā vai sthāvarāḥ smṛtāḥ
This is the creation of Prakriti, accomplished without deliberate forethought. The fourth is the Mukhya creation -- under it, the immovable beings are reckoned.
Verse 16 (shiva.vayaviya.12.16)
tiryyaksrotastu yaḥ proktastiryagyoniḥ sa pañcamaḥ | tadūrdhvasrotasaḥ ṣaṣṭho devasargastu sa smṛtaḥ
That which is called Tiryak-srotas is the fifth -- the animal species. The sixth is Urdhva-srotas, remembered as the creation of the gods.
Verse 17 (shiva.vayaviya.12.17)
tato'rvāk srotasāṁ sargaḥ saptamaḥ sa tu mānuṣaḥ | aṣṭamo'nugrahaḥ sargaḥ kaumāro navamaḥ smṛtaḥ
Then the creation of Arvak-srotas is the seventh, that being the human creation. The eighth is the Anugraha creation; the ninth is called the Kaumara creation.
Verse 18 (shiva.vayaviya.12.18)
prākṛtāśca trayaḥ pūrve sargāste'buddhipūrvakāḥ | buddhipūrvaṁ pravarttante mukhyādyāḥ pañca vaikṛtāḥ
The first three creations are Prakrita, occurring without deliberate forethought. The five beginning with Mukhya, the Vaikrita creations, proceed through deliberate intent.
Verse 19 (shiva.vayaviya.12.19)
agre sasarja vai brahmā mānasānātmanaḥ samān | sanandaṁ sanakaṁ caiva vidvāṁsañca sanātanam
In the beginning, Brahma created, mind-born, sons equal to himself -- Sananda, Sanaka, learned Sanatana,
Verse 20 (shiva.vayaviya.12.20)
ṛbhuṁ sanatkumāraṁ ca pūrvameva prajāpatiḥ | sarve te yogino jñeyā vītarāgā vimatsarāḥ
-- and Ribhu and Sanatkumara, created first of all by Prajapati. All of them are to be known as yogis, free from passion, free from envy.
Verse 21 (shiva.vayaviya.12.21)
īśvarāsaktamanaso na cakruḥ sṛṣṭaye matim | teṣu sṛṣṭyanapekṣeṣu gateṣu sanakādiṣu
With their minds attached only to the Supreme Lord, they gave no thought to creation. When Sanaka and the others, indifferent to creation, had gone their way,
Verse 22 (shiva.vayaviya.12.22)
sraṣṭukāmaḥ punarbrahmā tatāpa paramaṁ tapaḥ | tasyaivaṁ tapyamānasya na kiñcitsamavarttata
-- Brahma, desiring to create again, performed supreme austerity. But even as he practiced such austerity, nothing at all came about.
Verse 23 (shiva.vayaviya.12.23)
tato dīrgheṇa kālena duḥkhātkrodho vyajāyata | krodhāviṣṭasya netrābhyāṁ prāpatannaśrubindavaḥ
Then, after a long time, out of his sorrow, anger was born; and from the eyes of him who was overcome with anger, tear-drops fell.
Verse 24 (shiva.vayaviya.12.24)
tatastebhyo'śrubindubhyo bhūtāḥ pretāstadābhavan | sarvāṁstānaśrujāndṛṣṭvā brahmātmānamanindata
From those tear-drops, Bhutas and Pretas then came into being. Seeing all of those beings born of his own tears, Brahma reproached himself.
Verse 25 (shiva.vayaviya.12.25)
tasya tīvrā'bhavanmūrchā krodhāmarṣasamudbhavā | mūrcchitastu jahau prāṇānkrodhāviṣṭaḥ prajāpatiḥ
A violent swoon, born of anger and indignation, overcame him; and, having swooned, Prajapati, overwhelmed by anger, gave up his life-breaths.
Verse 26 (shiva.vayaviya.12.26)
tataḥ prāṇeśvaro rudro bhagavānnīlalohitaḥ | prasādamatulaṁ karttuṁ prādurāsītprabhormukhāt
Then Rudra, Lord of the vital breaths, the blessed one of the blue-red hue, in order to bestow unequaled grace, manifested from the mouth of the Lord.
Verse 27 (shiva.vayaviya.12.27)
daśadhā caikadhā cakre svātmānaṁ prabhurīśvaraḥ | te tenoktā mahātmāno daśadhā caikadhā kṛtāḥ
The mighty Lord made himself both tenfold and one; and to those great souls, thus made tenfold-and-one, he spoke:
Verse 28 (shiva.vayaviya.12.28)
yūyaṁ sṛṣṭā mayā vatsā lokānugrahakāraṇāt | tasmātsarvasya lokasya sthāpanāya hitāya ca
'You have been created by me, O children, for the sake of favoring the worlds. Therefore, for the establishment and welfare of the entire world,
Verse 29 (shiva.vayaviya.12.29)
prajāsantānahetośca prayatadhvamatandritāḥ | evamuktāśca rurudurdudruvuśca samantataḥ
'and for the continuity of progeny, strive without slackening.' Thus addressed, they wept, and ran about in every direction.
Verse 30 (shiva.vayaviya.12.30)
rodanād drāvaṇāccaiva te rudrā nāmataḥ smṛtāḥ | yerudrāste khalu prāṇā ye prāṇāste mahātmakāḥ
Because of their weeping and their running, they are known by the name 'Rudra'. Those who are Rudras are indeed the vital breaths; and those who are the vital breaths are the great souls.
Verse 31 (shiva.vayaviya.12.31)
tato mṛtasya devasya brahmaṇaḥ parameṣṭhinaḥ | ghṛṇī dadau punaḥ prāṇān brahmaputro maheśvaraḥ
Then, to the deceased god, Brahma the Supreme, the compassionate Maheshvara, who himself had come as his son, restored his life-breaths once more.
Verse 32 (shiva.vayaviya.12.32)
prahṛṣṭavadano rudraḥ prāṇapratyāgamādvibhoḥ | abhyabhāṣata viśveśo brahmāṇaṁ paramaṁ vacaḥ
Rudra, the Lord of the universe, his face joyful at the return of the mighty one's life-breaths, spoke these supreme words to Brahma --
Verse 33 (shiva.vayaviya.12.33)
mā bhairmābhairmahābhāga viriñce jagatāṁ guro | mayā te prāṇitāḥ prāṇāḥ sukhamuttiṣṭha suvrata
'Fear not, fear not, O greatly fortunate Virinchi, Teacher of the worlds! Your life-breaths have been restored by me. Arise happily, O one of good vows.'
Verse 34 (shiva.vayaviya.12.34)
svapnānubhūtamiva tacchrutvā vākyaṁ manoharam | haraṁ nirīkṣya śanakairnetraiḥ phullāmbujaprabhaiḥ
Hearing that enchanting speech, as though experienced in a dream, and gazing slowly upon Hara with eyes like blooming lotuses,
Verse 35 (shiva.vayaviya.12.35)
tathā pratyāgataprāṇaḥ snigdhagambhīrayā girā | uvāca vacanaṁ brahmā tamuddiśya kṛtāñjaliḥ
thus, with his life-breaths restored, Brahma, with palms folded, addressing him, spoke in a gentle, deep voice --
Verse 36 (shiva.vayaviya.12.36)
tvaṁ hi darśanamātreṇa cānandayasi me manaḥ | ko bhavān viśvamūrtyā vā sthita ekādaśātmakaḥ
'By the mere sight of you, my mind is filled with joy. Who are you, who stand as the very form of the universe, of elevenfold nature?'
Verse 37 (shiva.vayaviya.12.37)
tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā vyājahāra maheśvaraḥ | spṛśan karābhyāṁ brahmāṇaṁ susukhābhyāṁ sureśvaraḥ
Hearing his words, Maheshvara, the Lord of the gods, touching Brahma with his two hands, most soothing to the touch, spoke --
Verse 38 (shiva.vayaviya.12.38)
māṁ viddhi paramātmānaṁ tava putratvamāgatam | ete caikādaśa rudrāstvāṁ surakṣitumāgatāḥ
'Know me to be the Supreme Self, who has come to you in the guise of a son. And these eleven Rudras have come to protect you well.'
Verse 39 (shiva.vayaviya.12.39)
tasmāttīvrāmimāṁ mūrcchāṁ vidhūya madanugrahāt | prabuddhasva yathāpūrvaṁ prajā vai sraṣṭumarhasi
'Therefore, shaking off this violent swoon by my grace, awaken as before; you are indeed fit to bring forth progeny.'
Verse 40 (shiva.vayaviya.12.40)
evaṁ bhagavatā prokto brahmā prītamanā hyabhūt | nāmāṣṭakena viśvātmā tuṣṭāva parameśvaram
Thus addressed by the Blessed Lord, Brahma became glad at heart; the Soul of the universe praised the Supreme Lord with eight names.
Verse 41 (shiva.vayaviya.12.41)
brahmovāca | namaste bhagavan rudra bhāskarāmitatejase | namo bhavāya devāya rasāyāmbumayātmane | śarvāya kṣitirūpāya sadāsurabhaye namaḥ
Brahma said: Salutation to you, blessed Rudra, of the immeasurable radiance of the sun! Salutation to Bhava, the god whose self is composed of essence and water! Salutation to Sharva, whose form is the earth, ever a terror to the demons!
Verse 42 (shiva.vayaviya.12.42)
īśāya vasave tubhyaṁ namaḥ sparśamayātmane | paśūnāṁ pataye caiva pāvakāyātitejase | bhīmāya vyomarūpāya śabdamātrāya te namaḥ
Salutation to you, Isha, the Vasu, whose self is composed of touch! And to the Lord of creatures, to Pavaka, of exceeding radiance! Salutation to you, Bhima, whose form is the sky, of the nature of pure sound!
Verse 43 (shiva.vayaviya.12.43)
ugrāyograsvarūpāya yajamānātmane namaḥ | mahāśivāya somāya namo'stvamṛtamūrtaye
Salutation to Ugra, of fierce form, whose self is the sacrificer! Salutation to Mahashiva, to Soma, whose very form is immortality!
Verse 44 (shiva.vayaviya.12.44)
evaṁ stutvā mahādevaṁ brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ | prārthayāmāsa viśveśaṁ girā praṇatipūrvayā
Having thus praised Mahadeva, Brahma, the grandfather of the worlds, entreated the Lord of the universe with words preceded by reverent bowing --
Verse 45 (shiva.vayaviya.12.45)
bhagavan bhūtabhavyeśa mama putra maheśvara | sṛṣṭihetostvamutpanno mamāṅge'naṅganāśana
'O blessed one, Lord of what has been and what shall be, my son, Maheshvara, Destroyer of Kama! You were born from my body for the sake of creation.'
Verse 46 (shiva.vayaviya.12.46)
tasmānmahati kārye'smin vyāpṛtasya jagatprabho | sahāyaṁ kuru sarvatra sraṣṭumarhasi suprajāḥ
'Therefore, O Lord of the world, as I am engaged in this great task, be my helper in every way; you are able to bring forth good progeny.'
Verse 47 (shiva.vayaviya.12.47)
tenaivaṁ prārthito devo rudrastripuramardanaḥ | bāḍhamityeva tāṁ vāṇīṁ pratijagrāha śaṅkaraḥ
Thus entreated, the god Rudra, the Destroyer of Tripura, Shankara, accepted that request with the single word, 'So be it.'
Verse 48 (shiva.vayaviya.12.48)
tataḥ sa bhagavān brahmā hṛṣṭaṁ tamabhinandya ca | sraṣṭuṁ tenābhyanujñātastathānyāścāsṛjatprajāḥ
Then the blessed Brahma, rejoicing, and having honored him, being thus permitted by him, brought forth other kinds of progeny as well.
Verse 49 (shiva.vayaviya.12.49)
marīcibhṛgvaṅgirasaḥ pulastyaṁ pulahaṁ kratum | dakṣamatriṁ vasiṣṭhaṁ ca so'sṛjanmanasaiva ca | purastādasṛjad brahmā dharmaṁ saṅkalpameva ca
Marichi, Bhrigu, Angiras, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Daksha, Atri, and Vasishtha -- these he created by mind alone. Before that, Brahma had created Dharma and Sankalpa as well.
Verse 50 (shiva.vayaviya.12.50)
ityete brahmaṇaḥ putrā dvādaśādau prakīrtitāḥ | saha rudreṇa sambhūtāḥ purāṇā gṛhamedhinaḥ
Thus these are proclaimed as the twelve sons of Brahma from the beginning, born together with Rudra, ancient householder sages.
Verse 51 (shiva.vayaviya.12.51)
teṣāṁ dvādaśa vaṁśāḥ syurdivyā devagaṇānvitāḥ | prajāvantaḥ kriyāvanto maharṣibhiralaṅkṛtāḥ
From them arose twelve divine lineages, accompanied by hosts of gods, rich in progeny, active in ritual observance, adorned by great sages.
Verse 52 (shiva.vayaviya.12.52)
atha devāsurān pitṛn manuṣyāṁśca catuṣṭayam | saha rudreṇa sisṛkṣurambhasyetāni vai vidhiḥ
Then, desiring to create the four -- gods, demons, ancestors, and humans -- together with Rudra, Vidhi undertook this amid the waters.
Verse 53 (shiva.vayaviya.12.53)
sa sṛṣṭyarthaṁ samādhāya brahmātmānamayūyujat | mukhādajanayaddevān pitṝṁścaivopapakṣataḥ
For the sake of creation, having composed himself in concentration, Brahma joined himself to the task; from his mouth he generated the gods, and from his flanks the ancestors.
Verse 54 (shiva.vayaviya.12.54)
jaghanādasurān sarvān prajanādapi mānuṣān | avaskare kṣudhāviṣṭā rākṣasāstasya jajñire
From his hips he generated all the demons; and from his organ of generation, humans. Hunger-driven Rakshasas were born of him from his excretory organ.
Verse 55 (shiva.vayaviya.12.55)
putrāstamorajaḥprāyā balinaste niśācarāḥ | sarpā yakṣāstathā bhūtā gandharvāḥ samprajajñire
Those sons, predominantly of Tamas and Rajas, mighty, were the night-wanderers. Serpents, Yakshas, and likewise Bhutas and Gandharvas, were also born of him.
Verse 56 (shiva.vayaviya.12.56)
vayāṁsi pakṣataḥ sṛṣṭāḥ pakṣiṇo vakṣaso'sṛjat | mukhato'jāṁstathā pārśvāduragāṁśca vinirmame
Birds were created from his flanks; from his chest he created winged birds. From his mouth he created goats, and from his side he fashioned serpents.
Verse 57 (shiva.vayaviya.12.57)
padbhyāṁ cāśvānsamātaṅgān śarabhān gavayān mṛgān | uṣṭrānaśvatarāṁścaiva nyaṅkūnanyāśca jātayaḥ

Verse 58 (shiva.vayaviya.12.58)

-- and the Agnishtoma among the sacrifices, he fashioned from his eastern mouth. The Yajus verses, the Trishtubh meter, and the fifteenfold Stoma --
Verse 60 (shiva.vayaviya.12.60)
bṛhatsāma tathokthaṁ ca dakṣiṇādasṛjanmukhāt | sāmāni jagatīchandaḥ stomaṁ saptadaśaṁ tathā
-- and the Brihat Saman, and the Uktha, he created from his southern mouth. The Saman verses, the Jagati meter, and the seventeenfold Stoma --
Verse 61 (shiva.vayaviya.12.61)

anuṣṭubhaṁ sa vairājamuttarādasṛjanmukhāt | uccāvacāni bhūtāni gātrebhyastasya jajñire
-- and the Anushtubh, and the Vairaja Saman, he created from his northern mouth. High and low beings of every kind were born from his other limbs.
Verse 63 (shiva.vayaviya.12.63)
yakṣāḥ piśācā gandharvāstathaivāpsarasāṁ gaṇāḥ | narakinnararakṣāṁsi vayaḥpaśumṛgoragāḥ
Yakshas, Pishachas, Gandharvas, and the hosts of Apsarases; men, Kinnaras, Rakshasas; birds, cattle, deer, and serpents --
Verse 64 (shiva.vayaviya.12.64)
avyayaṁ caiva yadidaṁ jagat sthāvarajaṅgamam | teṣāṁ vai yāni karmāṇi prāksṛṣṭāni prapedire
-- and this imperishable universe, moving and unmoving, came forth. Whatever actions had been ordained for them in the previous creation, those very beings resorted to once more.
Verse 65 (shiva.vayaviya.12.65)
tānyeva te prapadyante sṛjyamānāḥ punaḥ punaḥ | hiṁsrāhiṁsre mṛdu krūre dharmādharmāvṛtānṛte
They adopt those very same natures each time they are created again -- harmful and harmless, gentle and cruel, righteous and unrighteous, truthful and false.
Verse 66 (shiva.vayaviya.12.66)
tadbhāvitāḥ prapadyante tasmāttattasya rocate | mahābhūteṣu nānātvamindriyārtheṣu muktiṣu
Habituated to that from before, they take to it again; therefore that particular disposition is pleasing to each of them. Thus arises diversity among the great elements, the objects of the senses, and the paths to liberation.
Verse 67 (shiva.vayaviya.12.67)
viniyogaṁ ca bhūtānāṁ dhātaiva vyadadhatsvayam | nāmarūpaṁ ca bhūtānāṁ prākṛtānāṁ prapañcanam
And the proper function of all beings, the Ordainer himself assigned; and likewise the name and form of the beings sprung from Prakriti, as an unfolding of what belongs to Nature.
Verse 68 (shiva.vayaviya.12.68)
vedaśabdebhya evādau nirmame'sau pitāmahaḥ | ārṣāṇi caiva nāmāni yāśca vedeṣu vṛttayaḥ
From the very words of the Veda, in the beginning, that Grandsire fashioned the names of the sages, and the ritual procedures found within the Vedas.
Verse 69 (shiva.vayaviya.12.69)
śarvaryyante prasūtānāṁ tānyevaibhyo dadāvajaḥ | yathartāvṛtuliṅgāni nānārūpāṇi paryyaye
To those born at the end of that cosmic night, the Unborn One gave those very same names and functions once more -- just as, season by season, in their recurrence, the varied forms that mark each season reappear.
Verse 70 (shiva.vayaviya.12.70)
dṛśyante tāni tānyeva tathā bhāvā yugādiṣu | ityeṣa karaṇodbhūto lokasargaḥ svayambhuvaḥ
Those very same phenomena are seen again and again; and the same states of being recur at the beginning of each Yuga. Thus is this creation of the world, born through instrumental causes, the creation of the Self-born.
Verse 71 (shiva.vayaviya.12.71)

Verse 72 (shiva.vayaviya.12.72)
nadībhiśca samudraiśca parvataiśca sa maṇḍitaḥ | paraiśca vividhai ramyaiḥ sphītairjanapadaistathā
adorned as well with rivers, oceans, and mountains, and with various other lovely and flourishing inhabited lands.
Verse 73 (shiva.vayaviya.12.73)
tasmin brahmavane'vyakto brahmā carati sarvavit | avyaktabījaprabhava īśvarānugrahe sthitaḥ
In this forest of Brahman, the unmanifest, all-knowing Brahma wanders, sprung from the unmanifest seed, established in the grace of the Lord.
Verse 74 (shiva.vayaviya.12.74)
buddhiskandhamahāśākha indriyāntarakoṭaraḥ | mahābhūtapramāṇaśca viśeṣāmalapallavaḥ
This tree has Buddhi as its great branches, the senses as the hollows within them, the great elements as its measure, and the specific gross elements as its pure sprouts,
Verse 75 (shiva.vayaviya.12.75)
dharmādharmasupuṣpāḍhyaḥ sukhaduḥkhaphalodayaḥ | ājīvyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ brahmavṛkṣaḥ sanātanaḥ
richly flowered with Dharma and Adharma, bearing the fruits of pleasure and pain -- this eternal Tree of Brahman sustains the life of all beings.
Verse 76 (shiva.vayaviya.12.76)
dyāṁ mūrddhānaṁ tasya viprā vadanti khaṁ vai nābhiṁ candrasūryau ca netre | diśaḥ śrotre caraṇau ca kṣitiṁ ca so'cintyātmā sarvabhūtapraṇetā
The wise declare heaven to be his head, the sky his navel, the moon and sun his two eyes, the directions his ears, and the earth his two feet -- he, of inconceivable nature, the guide of all beings.
Verse 77 (shiva.vayaviya.12.77)
vaktrāttasya brāhmaṇāḥ samprasūtāḥ tadvakṣasaḥ kṣatriyāḥ pūrvabhāgāt | vaiśyā urubhyāṁ tasya padbhyāṁ ca śūdrāḥ sarve varṇā gātrataḥ samprasūtāḥ
From his mouth the Brahmins were born; from the fore-part of his chest, the Kshatriyas; from his thighs the Vaishyas, and from his feet the Shudras -- all the varnas were born from his limbs.
