Vayaviya Samhita · Chapter 51
The Sacrament of the Disciple
Verse 1 (shiva.vayaviya.51.1)
upamanyuruvāca | puṇye'hani śucau deśe bahudoṣavivarjite | deśikaḥ prathamaṁ kuryātsaṁskāraṁ samayāhvayam
Upamanyu said: On an auspicious day, in a pure place, free from every manner of flaw, the teacher should first perform the sacrament called 'samaya,' the preliminary initiation.
Verse 2 (shiva.vayaviya.51.2)
parīkṣya bhūmiṁ vidhivad gandhavarṇarasādibhiḥ | śilpiśāstroktamārgeṇa maṇḍapaṁ tatra kalpayet
Having duly examined the ground by its smell, color, taste, and the like, he should there construct a pavilion according to the method declared in the treatises on architecture.
Verse 3 (shiva.vayaviya.51.3)
kṛtvā vediṁ ca tanmadhye kuṇḍāni parikalpayet | aṣṭadikṣu tathā dikṣu tatraiśānyāṁ punaḥ kramāt
Having made an altar in its center, he should arrange fire-pits in the eight directions, and, in order, once more in the northeast.
Verse 4 (shiva.vayaviya.51.4)
pradhānakuṇḍaṁ kurvīta yadvā paścimabhāgataḥ | pradhānamekamevātha kṛtvā śobhāṁ prakalpayet
He should make the principal fire-pit there, or else in the western section; having made just one principal pit, he should then arrange its adornment.
Verse 5 (shiva.vayaviya.51.5)
vitānadhvajamālābhirvividhābhiranekaśaḥ | vedimadhye tataḥ kuryānmaṇḍalaṁ śubhalakṣaṇam
With canopies, banners, and garlands of many varied kinds; then, in the middle of the altar, he should make an auspicious mandala.
Verse 6 (shiva.vayaviya.51.6)
raktahemādibhiścūrṇairīśvarāvāhanocitam | sindūraśālinīvāracūrṇairevātha nirdhanaḥ
It should be drawn with powders of red, gold, and the like, fitting for the invocation of the Lord; or, for one without means, with powders of vermilion, rice-flour, and turmeric.
Verse 7 (shiva.vayaviya.51.7)
ekahastaṁ dvihastaṁ vā sitaṁ vā raktameva vā | ekahastasya padmasya karṇikāṣṭāṅgulā matā
It should be one cubit or two cubits, either white or red; for a lotus mandala of one cubit, the pericarp is held to be eight fingers wide.
Verse 8 (shiva.vayaviya.51.8)
kesarāṇi tadardhāni śeṣaṁ cāṣṭadalādikam | dvihastasya tu padmasya dviguṇaṁ karṇikādikam
The filaments are half of that, and the remainder consists of eight petals and the rest; for a lotus of two cubits, the pericarp and the rest are doubled.
Verse 9 (shiva.vayaviya.51.9)
kṛtvā śobhopaśobhāḍhya maiśānyāṁ tasya kalpayet | ekahastaṁ tadarddhaṁ vā punarvedyāṁ tu maṇḍalam
Having made it rich with adornment and sub-adornment, he should arrange it in the northeast; a mandala of one cubit, or half that, should again be made upon the altar.
Verse 10 (shiva.vayaviya.51.10)
vrīhitandulasiddhārthatilapuṣpakuśāstṛte | tatra lakṣaṇasaṁyuktaṁ śivakumbhaṁ prasādhayet
Upon it, strewn with unhusked rice, husked rice, white mustard, sesame, flowers, and kusha grass, he should set up the Shiva-kumbha, the sacred water-jar, endowed with all the proper marks.
Verse 11 (shiva.vayaviya.51.11)
sauvarṇaṁ rājataṁ vāpi tāmrajaṁ mṛnmayaṁ tu vā | gandhapuṣpākṣatākīrṇaṁ kuśadūrvāṅkurācitam
It should be of gold, silver, copper, or clay; strewn over with fragrant paste, flowers, and unbroken rice, and covered with kusha grass and durva shoots,
Verse 12 (shiva.vayaviya.51.12)
sitasūtrāvṛtaṁ kaṇṭhe navavastrayugāvṛtam | śuddhāmbupūrṇamutkūrcaṁ sadravyaṁ sapidhānakam
bound at the neck with a white thread, wrapped in a pair of new cloths, filled with pure water, with a tuft rising from it, containing sacred substances, and covered with a lid.
Verse 13 (shiva.vayaviya.51.13)
bhṛṅgāraṁ vardhanīṁ cāpi śaṅkhaṁ ca cakrameva vā | vinā sūtrādikaṁ sarvaṁ padmapatramathāpi vā
A ewer, or a vardhani-vessel, or a conch, or even a wheel shape — or, lacking all the proper threads and other items, even a lotus leaf may serve as the vessel.
Verse 14 (shiva.vayaviya.51.14)
tasyāsanāravindasya kalpayeduttare dale | agrataścandanāmbhobhirastrarājasya vardhanīm
On the northern petal of that lotus-seat, he should place, in front, a vessel of sandal-water for the weapon of the Lord.
Verse 15 (shiva.vayaviya.51.15)
maṇḍalasya tataḥ prācyāṁ mantrakumbhe ca pūrvavat | kṛtvā vidhivadīśasya mahāpūjāṁ samācaret
Then, to the east of the mandala, and likewise in the mantra-jar as before, having installed the deity, he should duly perform the great worship of the Lord.
Verse 16 (shiva.vayaviya.51.16)
athārṇavasya tīre vā nadyāṁ goṣṭhe'pi vā girau | devāgare gṛhe vāpi deśe'nyasminmanohare
Or else, on the shore of the ocean, or by a river, or in a cow-pen, or on a mountain, in a temple or at home, or in any other pleasant place —
Verse 17 (shiva.vayaviya.51.17)
kṛtvā pūrvoditaṁ sarvaṁ vinā vā maṇḍapādikam | maṇḍalaṁ pūrvavatkṛtvā sthaṇḍilaṁ ca vibhāvasoḥ
having done all that was described above, or even without the pavilion and the rest, having made the mandala as before, and a raised platform for the fire,
Verse 18 (shiva.vayaviya.51.18)
praviśya pūjābhavanaṁ prahṛṣṭavadano guruḥ | sarvamaṅgalasaṁyuktaḥ samācaritanaityakaḥ
the guru, his face joyful, entering the place of worship, joined with every auspicious observance, having performed his daily rites,
Verse 19 (shiva.vayaviya.51.19)
mahāpūjāṁ maheśasya kṛtvā maṇḍalamadhyataḥ | śivakumbhe tathā bhūyaḥ śivamāvāhya pūjayet
having performed the great worship of Mahesha in the middle of the mandala, should then again invoke Shiva into the Shiva-kumbha and worship him.
Verse 20 (shiva.vayaviya.51.20)
paścimābhimukhaṁ dhyātvā yajñarakṣakamīśvaram | arcayedastravarddhanyāmastramīśasya dakṣiṇe
Having meditated on the Lord, the protector of the sacrifice, facing west, he should worship the Lord's weapon in the astra-vardhani vessel, to the south.
Verse 21 (shiva.vayaviya.51.21)
mantrakumbhe ca vinyasya mantraṁ mantraviśāradaḥ | kṛtvā mudrādikaṁ sarvaṁ mantrayāgaṁ samācaret
Having placed the mantra in the mantra-jar, the one skilled in mantra, having performed all the proper hand-gestures and the rest, should perform the sacrificial worship of the mantra.
Verse 22 (shiva.vayaviya.51.22)
tataḥ śivānale homaṁ kuryāddeśikasattamaḥ | pradhānakuṇḍe parito juhuyuścāpare dvijāḥ
Then the best of teachers should perform the fire-offering into the Shaiva fire; and other brahmins should offer oblations around the principal fire-pit.
Verse 23 (shiva.vayaviya.51.23)
ācāryātpādamarddhaṁ vā homasteṣāṁ vidhīyate | pradhānakuṇḍa evātha juhuyāddeśikottamaḥ
For them, the offering prescribed is a quarter or a half of the teacher's own; the best of teachers, however, should offer specifically into the principal fire-pit.
Verse 24 (shiva.vayaviya.51.24)
svādhyāyamapare kuryuḥ stotraṁ maṅgalavācanam | japaṁ ca vidhivaccānye śivabhaktiparāyaṇāḥ
Some should perform Vedic recitation, hymns of praise, and auspicious readings; others, devoted to devotion to Shiva, should duly perform muttered prayer.
Verse 25 (shiva.vayaviya.51.25)
nṛtyaṁ gītaṁ ca vādyaṁ ca maṅgalānyaparāṇi ca | pūjanaṁ ca sadasyānāṁ kṛtvā samyagvidhānataḥ
Dance, song, and instrumental music, and other auspicious observances, and the worship of the assembly of participants should be performed duly and properly.
Verse 26 (shiva.vayaviya.51.26)
puṇyāhaṁ kārayitvātha punaḥ sampūjya śaṅkaram | prārthayeddeśiko devaṁ śiṣyānugrahakāmyayā
Then, having had the auspicious blessing recited, and having again worshipped Shankara, the teacher should petition the god, out of a desire to bestow grace upon the disciple:
Verse 27 (shiva.vayaviya.51.27)
prasīda devadeveśa dehamāviśya māmakam | vimocayainaṁ viśveśa ghṛṇayā ca ghṛṇānidhe
'Be gracious, O Lord of gods; having entered into my very body, release this one, O Lord of the universe, through your compassion, O treasury of compassion.'
Verse 28 (shiva.vayaviya.51.28)
atha caivaṁ karomīti labdhānujñastu deśikaḥ | ānīyopoṣitaṁ śiṣyaṁ haviṣyāśinameva vā
Then, having received Shiva's permission, expressed as 'so be it, I shall do this,' the teacher, having brought the disciple, who has fasted or eaten only sacrificial food,
Verse 29 (shiva.vayaviya.51.29)
ekāśanaṁ vā virataṁ snātaṁ prātaḥkṛtakriyam | japantaṁ praṇavaṁ devaṁ dhyāyantaṁ kṛtamaṅgalam
or has eaten only once, restrained, bathed, having performed his morning rites, reciting the syllable Om, meditating on the god, having performed the auspicious rites,
Verse 30 (shiva.vayaviya.51.30)
dvārasya paścimasyāgramaṇḍale dakṣiṇasya vā | darbhāsane samāsīnaṁ vidhāyodaṅmukhaṁ śiśum
and having seated the young disciple, facing north, upon a seat of kusha grass, at the front of the western gate of the mandala, or of the southern gate,
Verse 31 (shiva.vayaviya.51.31)
svayaṁ prāgvadanastiṣṭhannūrdhvakāyaṁ kṛtāñjalim | samprokṣya prokṣaṇītoyairmūrddhanyastreṇa mudrayā
he himself standing and facing east, the disciple with body upright and hands joined in salutation — having sprinkled him with the water of aspersion, and, upon his head, with the weapon-mudra —
Verse 32 (shiva.vayaviya.51.32)
puṣpakṣepeṇa santāḍya badhnīyāllocanaṁ guruḥ | dukūlārddhena vastreṇa mantritena navena ca
having struck him lightly with a scattering of flowers, the guru should bind his eyes, with a piece of fine new cloth that has been consecrated with mantra.
Verse 33 (shiva.vayaviya.51.33)
tataḥ praveśayecchiṣyaṁ gururdvāreṇa maṇḍalam | so'pi teneritaḥ śambhorācaret triḥpradakṣiṇam
Then the guru should lead the disciple through the gate into the mandala; and he, guided by him, should circumambulate the Lord Shambhu three times.
Verse 34 (shiva.vayaviya.51.34)
tataḥ suvarṇasammiśraṁ dattvā puṣpāñjaliṁ prabhoḥ | prāṅmukhaścodaṅmukho vā praṇameddaṇḍavatkṣitau
Then, having offered to the Lord a handful of flowers mixed with gold, facing east or facing north, he should prostrate himself flat upon the ground like a rod.
Verse 35 (shiva.vayaviya.51.35)
tataḥ samprokṣya mūlena śirasyastreṇa pūrvavat | santāḍya deśikastasya mocayennetrabandhanam
Then, having sprinkled him with the root-mantra, and, upon his head, with the weapon-mantra as before, the teacher, having again struck him lightly, should remove the binding of his eyes.
Verse 36 (shiva.vayaviya.51.36)
sa dṛṣṭvā maṇḍalaṁ bhūyaḥ praṇametsāñjaliḥ prabhum | athāsīnaṁ śivācāryo maṇḍalasya tu dakṣiṇe
Having seen the mandala, he should again prostrate before the Lord, hands joined. Then, the Shaiva teacher, seated to the south of the mandala,
Verse 37 (shiva.vayaviya.51.37)
upaveśyātmanaḥ savye śiṣyaṁ darbhāsane guruḥ | ārādhya ca mahādevaṁ śivahastaṁ pravinyaset
having seated the disciple to his own left upon a seat of kusha grass, and having worshipped the great god, should then place his hand, as the very hand of Shiva —
Verse 38 (shiva.vayaviya.51.38)
śivatejomayaṁ pāṇiṁ śivamantramudīrayet | śivābhimānasampanno nyasecchiṣyasya mastake
that hand full of Shiva's own radiance, reciting the mantra of Shiva, filled with the conviction that he is Shiva himself, upon the head of the disciple.
Verse 39 (shiva.vayaviya.51.39)
sarvāṅgālambanaṁ caiva kuryāttenaiva deśikaḥ | śiṣyo'pi praṇamedbhūmau deśikākṛtimīśvaram
With that same hand the teacher should also touch, in blessing, every limb of the disciple; and the disciple should prostrate upon the ground before the Lord in the form of the teacher.
Verse 40 (shiva.vayaviya.51.40)
tataḥ śivānale devaṁ samabhyarcya yathāvidhi | hutāhutitrayaṁ śiṣyamupaveśya yathā purā
Then, having duly worshipped the god in the Shaiva fire, having offered three oblations, and having seated the disciple as before,
Verse 41 (shiva.vayaviya.51.41)
darbhāgraiḥ saṁspṛśaṁstaṁ ca vidyayātmānamāviśet | namaskṛtya mahādevaṁ nāḍīsandhānamācaret
touching him with the tips of kusha grass, he should, through the sacred knowledge, cause his own self to enter into him; having saluted the great god, he should perform the joining of the subtle channels.
Verse 42 (shiva.vayaviya.51.42)
śivaśāstroktamārgeṇa kṛtvā prāṇasya nirgamam | śiṣyadehapraveśaṁ ca smṛtvā mantrāṁstu tarpayet
Having, by the method taught in the Shaiva scriptures, effected the exit of the breath, and, having recalled its entry into the disciple's body, he should satisfy the mantras with oblations.
Verse 43 (shiva.vayaviya.51.43)
santarpaṇāya mūlasya tenaivāhutayo daśa | deyāstisrastathāṅgānāmaṅgaireva yathākramam
For the satisfaction of the root-mantra, ten oblations should be given with it; three, likewise, for the six limbs, given in due order with the mantras of the limbs themselves.
Verse 44 (shiva.vayaviya.51.44)
tataḥ pūrṇāhutiṁ dattvā prāyaścittāya deśikaḥ | punardaśāhutīḥ kuryānmūlamantreṇa mantravit
Then, having given the full oblation, the teacher, versed in mantra, should, for the sake of atonement, again offer ten oblations with the root-mantra.
Verse 45 (shiva.vayaviya.51.45)
punaḥ sampūjya deveśaṁ samyagācamya deśikaḥ | hutvā caiva yathānyāyaṁ svajātyā vaiśyamuddharet
Having again worshipped the Lord of gods, and having duly sipped water, the teacher, having made offerings as is proper, should raise up spiritually a vaishya disciple according to his own birth.
Verse 46 (shiva.vayaviya.51.46)
tasyaivaṁ janayetkṣātramuddhāraṁ ca tataḥ punaḥ | kṛtvā tathaiva vipratvaṁ janayedasya deśikaḥ
Thus he should engender in him the kshatriya status, and having raised him up again, the teacher should, in the same way, engender in him the state of a brahmin.
Verse 47 (shiva.vayaviya.51.47)
rājanyaṁ caivamuddhṛtya kṛtvā vipraṁ punastayoḥ | rudratvaṁ janayedvipre rudranāmaiva sādhayet
Having thus raised him up from kshatriya to brahmin, he should then engender in that brahmin state the very nature of Rudra, and confer upon him a Rudra-name accordingly.
Verse 48 (shiva.vayaviya.51.48)
prokṣaṇaṁ tāḍanaṁ kṛtvā śiśoḥ svātmānamātmani | śivātmakamanusmṛtya sphurantaṁ visphuliṅgavat
Having performed the sprinkling and the light striking of the disciple, and having recalled his own self, of the very nature of Shiva, as flashing like a spark,
Verse 49 (shiva.vayaviya.51.49)
nāḍyā yathoktayā vāyuṁ recayenmantrato guruḥ | nirgamya praviśennāḍyāṁ śiṣyasya hṛdayaṁ tathā
the guru should, through the channel as described, expel the breath by means of the mantra; having gone forth, it should enter, through the subtle channel, into the heart of the disciple.
Verse 50 (shiva.vayaviya.51.50)
praviśya tasya caitanyaṁ nīlabindunibhaṁ smaran | svatejasāpāstamalaṁ jvalantamanucintayet
Having entered, he should recall his consciousness as resembling a blue point of light, and contemplate it as blazing, its impurity dispelled by its own radiance.
Verse 51 (shiva.vayaviya.51.51)
tamādāya tayā nāḍyā mantrī saṁhāramudrayā | na pūrakeṇa niveśyainamekībhāvārthamātmanaḥ
Taking hold of that point of consciousness through that channel, with the withdrawal-mudra, the one skilled in mantra — not by mere inhalation — should install it, for the purpose of union with his own self.
Verse 52 (shiva.vayaviya.51.52)
kumbhakena tathā nāḍyā recakena yathā purā | tasmādādāya śiṣyasya hṛdaye taṁ niveśayet
Then, through breath-retention and, as before, through that channel by exhalation, he should take hold of it and install it in the heart of the disciple.
Verse 53 (shiva.vayaviya.51.53)
tamālabhya śivāllabdhaṁ tasmai dattvopavītakam | hutvā''hutitrayaṁ paścāddadyātpūrṇāhutiṁ tataḥ
Having touched him and given him that spiritual essence received from Shiva, and having given him the sacred thread, and having offered three oblations, he should then afterward give the full oblation.
Verse 54 (shiva.vayaviya.51.54)
devasya dakṣiṇe śiṣyamupaveśya varāsane | kuśapuṣpaparistīrṇe baddhāñjalirudaṅmukham
Having seated the disciple to the right of the deity, upon an excellent seat strewn with kusha grass and flowers, hands joined, facing north,
Verse 55 (shiva.vayaviya.51.55)
svastikāsanamārūḍhaṁ vidhāya prāṅmukhaḥ svayam | varāsanasthito mantrairmahāmaṅgalaniḥsvanaiḥ
having placed him in the svastika posture, he himself facing east, seated upon an excellent seat, with mantras and great, auspicious sounds,
Verse 56 (shiva.vayaviya.51.56)
samādāya ghaṭaṁ pūrṇaṁ pūrṇameva prasādhitam | dhyāyamānaḥ śivaṁ śiṣyamabhiṣiñceta deśikaḥ
taking up the jar, full and duly consecrated, the teacher, meditating on Shiva, should perform the ablution of the disciple.
Verse 57 (shiva.vayaviya.51.57)
athāpanudya snānāmbu paridhāya sitāmbaram | ācānto'laṅkṛtaḥ śiṣyaḥ prāñjalirmaṇḍapaṁ vrajet
Then, having wiped away the bathing-water, having put on a white garment, having sipped water, and being adorned, the disciple, hands joined, should go to the pavilion.
Verse 58 (shiva.vayaviya.51.58)
upaveśya yathāpūrvaṁ taṁ gururdarbhaviṣṭare | sampūjya maṇḍale devaṁ karanyāsaṁ samācaret
Having seated him as before upon the kusha-grass seat, the guru, having worshipped the god in the mandala, should perform the placement upon the hands.
Verse 59 (shiva.vayaviya.51.59)
tatastu bhasmanā devaṁ dhyāyenmanasi deśikaḥ | samālabheta pāṇibhyāṁ śiśuṁ śivamudīrayet
Then the teacher should meditate in his mind on the god through the sacred ash, and, reciting the mantra of Shiva, should touch the disciple with both hands.
Verse 60 (shiva.vayaviya.51.60)
atha tasya śivācāryo dahanaplāvanādikam | sakalīkaraṇaṁ kṛtvā mātṛkānyāsavartmanā
Then the Shaiva teacher, having performed for him the mental rites of burning, flooding, and the rest, and the embodying of the deity in his limbs by the method of the placement of the alphabet-letters,
Verse 61 (shiva.vayaviya.51.61)
tataḥ śivāsanaṁ dhyātvā śiṣyamūrddhani deśikaḥ | tatrāvāhya yathānyāyamarcayenmanasā śivam
then, having meditated on the seat of Shiva upon the head of the disciple, the teacher, having duly invoked Shiva there, should worship Shiva mentally.
Verse 62 (shiva.vayaviya.51.62)
prārthayetprāñjalirdevaṁ nityamatra sthito bhava | iti vijñāpya taṁ śambhostejasā bhāsuraṁ smaret
With hands joined, he should petition the god: 'Remain here forever' — having thus addressed him, he should meditate on him as radiant with the splendor of Shambhu.
Verse 63 (shiva.vayaviya.51.63)
sampūjyātha śivaṁ śaivīmājñāṁ prāpya śivātmikām | karṇe śiṣyasya śanakaiḥ śivamantramudīrayet
Having then worshipped Shiva, and having received the Shaiva command, itself of the very nature of Shiva, he should softly recite the mantra of Shiva into the ear of the disciple.
Verse 64 (shiva.vayaviya.51.64)
sa tu baddhāñjaliḥ śrutvā mantraṁ tadgatamānasaḥ | śanaistaṁ vyāharecchiṣyaḥ śivācāryasya śāsanāt
And he, the disciple, hands joined, having heard the mantra, his mind fixed upon it, should softly repeat it back, at the instruction of the Shaiva teacher.
Verse 65 (shiva.vayaviya.51.65)
tataḥ śāktaṁ ca sandiśya mantraṁ mantravicakṣaṇaḥ | uccārayitvā ca sukhaṁ tasmai maṅgalamādiśet
Then, the one skilled in mantra, having also imparted the Shakti mantra, and having had it comfortably recited, should pronounce a blessing over him.
Verse 66 (shiva.vayaviya.51.66)
tataḥ samāsānmantrārthaṁ vācyavācakayogataḥ | samādiśyeśvaraṁ rūpaṁ yogamāsanamādiśet
Then, having briefly instructed him in the meaning of the mantra, through the relationship of the signified and the signifier, he should teach him the form of the Lord, the practice of yoga, and the proper posture.
Verse 67 (shiva.vayaviya.51.67)
atha gurvājñayā śiṣyaḥ śivāgnigurusannidhau | bhaktyaivamabhisandhāya dīkṣāvākyamudīrayet
Then, by the guru's command, the disciple, in the presence of Shiva, the fire, and the guru, having thus resolved with devotion, should utter the vow of initiation:
Verse 68 (shiva.vayaviya.51.68)
varaṁ prāṇaparityāgaśchedanaṁ śiraso'pi vā | na tvanabhyarcya bhuñjīya bhagavantaṁ trilocanam
'Better the abandoning of my very life, or even the severing of my head, than that I should partake of food without first having worshipped the three-eyed Lord.'
Verse 69 (shiva.vayaviya.51.69)
sa eva dadyānniyato yāvanmohaviparyayaḥ | tāvadārādhayeddevaṁ tanniṣṭhastatparāyaṇaḥ
He himself should keep this vow, self-restrained, for as long as the reversal of delusion has not occurred; until then he should worship the god, devoted to that end and intent upon it.
Verse 70 (shiva.vayaviya.51.70)
tataḥ sa samayo nāma bhaviṣyati śivāśrame | labdhādhikāro gurvājñāpālakastadvaśo bhavet
Then he will become known as a 'samayin,' one bound by vow, in the Shaiva order; having gained entitlement, an observer of the guru's command, he becomes subject to him.
Verse 71 (shiva.vayaviya.51.71)
ataḥ paraṁ nyastakaro bhasmādāya svahastataḥ | dadyācchiṣyāya mūlena rudrākṣaṁ cābhimantritam
Thereafter, having placed his hand in blessing, taking up sacred ash with his own hand, he should give it to the disciple, along with rudraksha beads consecrated with the root-mantra.
Verse 72 (shiva.vayaviya.51.72)
pratimā vāpi devasya gūḍhadehamathāpi vā | pūjāhomajapadhyānasādhanāni ca sambhave
And, if available, an image of the god, or else a hidden, aniconic form, and the implements for worship, fire-offering, muttered prayer, and meditation —
Verse 73 (shiva.vayaviya.51.73)
so'pi śiṣyaḥ śivācāryāllabdhāni bahumānataḥ | ādadītājñayā tasya deśikasya na cānyathā
the disciple, too, should receive these, obtained from the Shaiva teacher with great respect, only by his command, and not otherwise.
Verse 74 (shiva.vayaviya.51.74)
ācāryādāptamakhilaṁ śirasyādhāya bhaktitaḥ | rakṣayetpūjayecchambhuṁ maṭhe vā gṛha eva vā
Having placed upon his head, with devotion, everything received from the teacher, he should protect and worship Shambhu, whether in a monastery or in his own home.
Verse 75 (shiva.vayaviya.51.75)
ataḥ paraṁ śivācāramādiśedasya deśikaḥ | bhaktiśraddhānusāreṇa prajñāyāścānusārataḥ
Thereafter, the teacher should instruct him in the conduct proper to Shaivas, according to the measure of his devotion and faith, and according to the measure of his understanding.
Verse 76 (shiva.vayaviya.51.76)
yaduktaṁ yatsamājñātaṁ yaccaivānyatprakīrtitam | śivācāryeṇa samaye tatsarvaṁ śirasā vahet
Whatever has been spoken, whatever has been duly commanded, and whatever else has been declared by the Shaiva teacher at the time of initiation, all of that he should bear upon his head.
Verse 77 (shiva.vayaviya.51.77)
śivāgamasya grahaṇaṁ vācanaṁ śravaṇaṁ tathā | deśikadeśataḥ kuryānna svecchāto na cānyataḥ
The reception, the recitation, and the hearing of the Shaiva scriptures should be undertaken only as directed by the teacher — not according to his own inclination, nor from any other source.
Verse 78 (shiva.vayaviya.51.78)
iti saṅkṣepataḥ proktaḥ saṁskāraḥ samayāhvayaḥ | sākṣācchivapuraprāptau nṛṇāṁ paramasādhanam
Thus has the sacrament called 'samaya' been briefly declared — the supreme means for men to attain directly to the very city of Shiva.
