Verse 1 (shiva.vayaviya.68.1)

upamanyuruvāca | ataḥ paraṃ pravakṣyāmi kevalāmuṣmikaṃ vidhim | naitena sadṛśaṃ kiñcitkarmāsti bhuvanatraye

Upamanyu said: Hereafter I shall declare the rite that concerns only the world beyond; there is no act in all the three worlds equal to it.

Verse 2 (shiva.vayaviya.68.2)

puṇyātiśayasaṃyuktaḥ sarvairdevairanuṣṭhitaḥ | brahmaṇā viṣṇunā caiva rudreṇa ca viśeṣataḥ

Joined with an abundance of merit, it has been practiced by all the gods — especially by Brahma, by Vishnu, and by Rudra —

Verse 3 (shiva.vayaviya.68.3)

indrādilokapāraiśca sūryādyairnavabhirgrahaiḥ | viśvāmitravasiṣṭhādyairbrahmavidbhirmaharṣibhiḥ

by Indra and the other guardians of the worlds, by the Sun and the other eight planets, and by great sages who know Brahman such as Vishvamitra and Vasishtha,

Verse 4 (shiva.vayaviya.68.4)

śvetāgastyadadhīcādyairasmābhiśca śivāśritaiḥ | nandīśvaramahākālabhṛṅgīśādyairgaṇeśvaraiḥ

by Shveta, Agastya, Dadhichi and others, by us who have taken refuge in Shiva, and by the lords of Shiva's hosts — Nandishvara, Mahakala, Bhringisha and the rest —

Verse 5 (shiva.vayaviya.68.5)

pātālavāsibhirdaityaiḥ śeṣādyaiśca mahoragaiḥ | siddhairyakṣaiśca gandharvai rakṣobhūtapiśācakaiḥ

by the daityas who dwell in the netherworlds, by Shesha and the other great serpents, and by siddhas, yakshas, gandharvas, rakshasas, bhutas and pishachas —

Verse 6 (shiva.vayaviya.68.6)

svaṃ svaṃ padamanuprāptaṃ sarvairayamanuṣṭhitaḥ | anena vidhinā sarve devā devatvamāgatāḥ

this rite has been practiced by all of them, and each has thereby attained his own proper station; by this very rite all the gods came to their godhood.

Verse 7 (shiva.vayaviya.68.7)

brahmā brahmatvamāpanno viṣṇurviṣṇutvamāgataḥ | rudro rudratvamāpanna indraścendratvamāgataḥ

Brahma attained Brahma-hood, Vishnu came to Vishnu-hood, Rudra attained Rudra-hood, and Indra came to Indra-hood —

Verse 8 (shiva.vayaviya.68.8)

gaṇeśaśca gaṇeśatvamanena vidhinā gataḥ | sitacandanatoyena liṅgaṃ snāpya śivaṃ śivām | śvetairvikasitaiḥ padmaiḥ sampūjya praṇipatya ca

and Ganesha too came to his Ganesha-hood by this same rite. Having bathed the linga of Shiva and Shiva (with Parvati) with water mixed with white sandal, worshipped it with white, fully-opened lotuses, and bowed down before it —

Verse 9 (shiva.vayaviya.68.9)

tatra padmāsanaṃ ramyaṃ kṛtvā lakṣaṇasaṃyutam | vibhave sati hemādyai ratnādyairvā svaśaktitaḥ

one should there fashion a beautiful lotus-seat marked with its proper characteristics, made of gold or of gems if one has the means, or according to one's own capacity —

Verse 10 (shiva.vayaviya.68.10)

madhye kesarajālāsya sthāpya liṅgaṃ kanīyasam | aṅguṣṭhapratimaṃ ramyaṃ sarvagandhamayaṃ śubham

and in the middle of its net of filaments one should set a small, beautiful linga, the size of a thumb, auspicious and made wholly of fragrant substances.

Verse 11 (shiva.vayaviya.68.11)

dakṣiṇe sthāpayitvā tu bilvapatraiḥ samarcayet | aguruṃ dakṣiṇe pārśve paścime tu manaḥśilām

Having placed bilva leaves to its south, one should worship it with them; aguru should be placed on its southern side, and red arsenic to its west,

Verse 12 (shiva.vayaviya.68.12)

uttare candanaṃ dadyāddharitālaṃ tu pūrvataḥ | sugandhaiḥ kusumai ramyairvicitraiścāpi pūjayet

sandalwood should be placed to its north and yellow orpiment to its east; and one should worship it with fragrant, beautiful, many-colored flowers.

Verse 13 (shiva.vayaviya.68.13)

dhūpaṃ kṛṣṇāguruṃ dadyātsarvataśca saguggulam | vāsāṃsi cātisūkṣmāṇi vikāśāni nivedayet

One should offer incense of black aguru mixed with guggulu on every side, and present garments of the finest, unstitched weave.

Verse 14 (shiva.vayaviya.68.14)

pāyasaṃ ghṛtasammiśraṃ ghṛtadīpāṃśca dāpayet | sarvaṃ nivedya mantreṇa tato gacchetpradakṣiṇām

One should offer rice-pudding mixed with ghee, and lamps fed with ghee; having offered everything with the appropriate mantra, one should then walk around it in circumambulation.

Verse 15 (shiva.vayaviya.68.15)

praṇamya bhaktyā deveśaṃ stutvā cānte kṣamāpayet | sarvopahārasammiśraṃ tato liṅgaṃ nivedayet

Having bowed with devotion to the Lord of gods and praised him, at the end one should beg his forgiveness; then, together with all the offerings gathered, one should present the linga itself as the final oblation.

Verse 16 (shiva.vayaviya.68.16)

śivāya śivamantreṇa dakṣiṇāmūrtimāśritaḥ | evaṃ yo'rcayate nityaṃ pañcagandhamayaṃ śubham

Taking refuge in his form as Dakshinamurti, one should offer it to Shiva with the Shiva-mantra. Whoever thus worships daily this auspicious linga made of the five fragrances —

Verse 17 (shiva.vayaviya.68.17)

sarvapāpavinirmuktaḥ śivaloke mahīyate | etad vratottamaṃ guhyaṃ śivaliṅgamahāvratam

becomes freed from all sin and is glorified in the world of Shiva. This is the highest and most secret vow, the great vow of the Shiva-linga —

Verse 18 (shiva.vayaviya.68.18)

declared to you, a devotee, and it must not be given to just anyone — it is to be given only to devotees of Shiva. This was told by Shiva himself, of old.
