The Rite of Installation

Chapter 70All chaptersChapter 72

Verse 1 (shiva.vayaviya.71.1)

śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca | bhagavan śrotumicchāmi pratiṣṭhāvidhimuttamam | liṅgasyāpi ca berasya śivena vihitaṃ yathā

Shri Krishna said: O Lord, I wish to hear the supreme rite of installation — how it was ordained by Shiva, both for the linga and for the image.

Verse 2 (shiva.vayaviya.71.2)

upamanyuruvāca | anātmapratikūle tu divase śuklapakṣake | śivaśāstroktamārgeṇa kuryālliṅgaṃ pramāṇavat

Upamanyu said: On a day not unfavorable to oneself, in the bright fortnight, one should make the linga according to its due measure, following the path taught in the Shiva-scriptures.

Verse 3 (shiva.vayaviya.71.3)

svīkṛtyātha śubhasthānaṃ bhūparīkṣāṃ vidhāya ca | daśopacārānkurvīta lakṣaṇoddhārapūrvakān

Then, having chosen an auspicious site and examined the ground, one should perform the ten preliminary rites, beginning with the drawing-out of the marks.

Verse 4 (shiva.vayaviya.71.4)

teṣāṃ daśopacārāṇāṃ pūrvaṃ pūjya vināyakam | sthānaśuddhyādikaṃ kṛtvā liṅgaṃ snānālayaṃ nayet

Before these ten preliminary rites, one should first worship Vinayaka; then, after purifying the site and so on, one should bring the linga to the bathing-hall.

Verse 5 (shiva.vayaviya.71.5)

śalākayā kāñcanayā kuṅkumādirasāktayā | lakṣitaṃ lakṣaṇaṃ śilpaśāstreṇa vilikhettataḥ

With a golden probe smeared with saffron and similar substances, one should then mark out the required characteristics upon it, according to the rules of the craft-treatises.

Verse 6 (shiva.vayaviya.71.6)

aṣṭamṛtsalilairvātha pañcamṛtsalilaistathā | liṅgaṃ piṇḍikayā sārddhaṃ pañcagavyaiśca śodhayet

One should then purify the linga, together with its pedestal, with water and the eight kinds of clay, or with water and the five kinds of clay, and also with the five products of the cow.

Verse 7 (shiva.vayaviya.71.7)

savedikaṃ samabhyarcya divyādyaṃ tu jalāśayam | nītvādhivāsayettatra liṅgaṃ piṇḍikayā saha

Having duly worshipped it together with its pedestal, one should carry the linga, together with its base, to a divine or other reservoir of water, and there let it reside overnight.

Verse 8 (shiva.vayaviya.71.8)

adhivāsālaye śuddhe sarvaśobhāsamanvite | satoraṇe sāvaraṇe darbhamālāsamāvṛte

This should be done in a pure hall of residence, adorned with every beauty, furnished with a festive arch and an enclosure, and hung about with garlands of kusha grass,

Verse 9 (shiva.vayaviya.71.9)

diggajāṣṭakasampanne dikpālāṣṭaghaṭānvite | aṣṭamaṅgalakairyukte kṛtadikpālakārcite

provided with the eight elephants of the directions, furnished with the eight jars of the guardians of the directions, joined with the eight auspicious objects, where the guardians of the directions have already been worshipped.

Verse 10 (shiva.vayaviya.71.10)

taijasaṃ dāravaṃ vāpi kṛtvā padmāsanāṅkitam | vinyasenmadhyatastatra vipulaṃ pīṭhakālayam

Having made a seat of metal or of wood, marked with a lotus-throne, one should place there in the middle a large pedestal-platform.

Verse 11 (shiva.vayaviya.71.11)

dvārapālān samabhyarcya bhadrādīṃścaturaḥkramāt | subhadraśca vibhadraśca sunandaśca vinandakaḥ

Having duly worshipped the door-guardians, Bhadra and the rest, four in order — namely Subhadra, Vibhadra, Sunanda, and Vinandaka —

Verse 12 (shiva.vayaviya.71.12)

snāpayitvā samabhyarcya liṅgaṃ vedikayā saha | sakūrcābhyāṃ tu vastrābhyāṃ samāveṣṭya samantataḥ

having bathed and duly worshipped the linga together with its pedestal, and wrapped it all around with two cloths together with two tufts of kusha grass,

Verse 13 (shiva.vayaviya.71.13)

prāpayya śanakaistoyaṃ pīṭhikopari śāyayet | prāk śiraskamadhaḥ sūtraṃ piṇḍikāṃ cāsya paścime

one should slowly bring it to the water and then lay it down upon the pedestal-seat, its head to the east, the consecrated thread below it, and its base to its west.

Verse 14 (shiva.vayaviya.71.14)

sarvamaṅgalasaṃyuktaṃ liṅgaṃ tatrādhivāsayet | pañcarātraṃ trirātraṃ vāpyekarātramathāpi vā

There, joined with every auspicious rite, one should let the linga reside for five nights, or three nights, or else for one night.

Verse 15 (shiva.vayaviya.71.15)

visṛjya pūjitaṃ tatra śodhayitvā ca pūrvavat | sampūjyotsavamārgeṇa śayanālayamānayet

Having then released it from that worship there and purified it as before, one should worship it again in festival manner and bring it to the hall of repose.

Verse 16 (shiva.vayaviya.71.16)

tatrāpi śayanasthānaṃ kuryāt maṇḍalamadhyataḥ | śuddhairjalaiḥ snāpayitvā liṅgamabhyarcayetkramāt

There too one should make the place of repose in the middle of a mandala; having bathed the linga with pure waters, one should worship it there in due order.

Verse 17 (shiva.vayaviya.71.17)

aiśānyāṃ padmamālikhya śuddhalipte mahītale | śivakumbhaṃ śodhayitvā tatrāvāhya śivaṃ yajet

Having drawn a lotus-diagram in the north-east upon a purified, plastered ground, and having purified the Shiva-jar, one should invoke Shiva into it there and worship him.

Verse 18 (shiva.vayaviya.71.18)

vedīmadhye sitaṃ padmaṃ parikalpya vidhānataḥ | tasya paścimataścāpi caṇḍikāpadmamālikhet

Having duly fashioned a white lotus in the middle of the altar, and to its west as well, one should draw the lotus of Chandika, the Goddess.

Verse 19 (shiva.vayaviya.71.19)

kṣaumādyairvāhatairvastraiḥ puṣpairdarbhairathāpi vā | prakalpya śayanaṃ tasmin hemapuṣpaṃ vinikṣipet

Having fashioned a couch there with fine silk or other woven cloths, with flowers, or with kusha grass, one should scatter golden flowers upon it.

Verse 20 (shiva.vayaviya.71.20)

tatra liṅgaṃ samānīya sarvamaṅgalaniḥsvanaiḥ | raktena vastrayugmena sakūrcena samantataḥ

Having brought the linga there amid the sounds of every auspicious instrument, and wrapped it all around with a pair of red cloths together with kusha-tufts,

Verse 21 (shiva.vayaviya.71.21)

saha piṇḍikayāveṣṭya śāyayecca yathā purā | purastātpadmamālikhya taddaleṣu yathākramam

together with its pedestal, one should lay it down as before; and, having drawn a lotus in front of it, in due order upon its petals —

Verse 22 (shiva.vayaviya.71.22)

vidyeśakalaśānnyasyenmadhye śaivīṃ ca varddhanīm | parītya padmatritayaṃ juhuyurdvijasattamāḥ

one should set the jars of the Vidyeshas, and in the middle the Shaiva Vardhani jar; surrounding this triad of lotuses, the best of brahmins should offer the fire-oblation.

Verse 23 (shiva.vayaviya.71.23)

te cāṣṭamūrttayaḥ kalpyāḥ pūrvādiparitaḥ sthitāḥ | catvāraścātha vā dikṣu svadhyetāraḥ sajāpakāḥ

These officiants should be arranged as the eight Rudra-forms, seated round about beginning from the east — or else four, seated at the four directions, reciters of the Veda together with those who mutter the mantra.

Verse 24 (shiva.vayaviya.71.24)

juhuyuste virañcyādyāścatasro mūrtayaḥ smṛtāḥ | deśikaḥ prathamaṃ teṣāmaiśānyāṃ paścime'tha vā

Let these, remembered as the four forms beginning with Brahma, offer the oblation; among them the preceptor is placed first, in the north-east, or else in the west.

Verse 25 (shiva.vayaviya.71.25)

pradhānahomaṃ kurvīta saptadravyairyathākramam | ācāryāt pādamarddhaṃ vā juhuyuścāpare dvijāḥ

One should perform the principal fire-oblation with the seven substances in due order; the other brahmins should offer a quarter or a half of what the preceptor offers.

Verse 26 (shiva.vayaviya.71.26)

pradhānamekamevātra juhuyādatha vā guruḥ | pūrvaṃ pūrṇāhutiṃ hutvā ghṛtenāṣṭottaraṃ śatam

Or else, the guru alone may offer the principal oblation here; having first offered the full oblation, he should offer one hundred and eight oblations of ghee.

Verse 27 (shiva.vayaviya.71.27)

mūrdhni mūlena liṅgasya śivahastaṃ pravinyaset | śatamarddhaṃ tadarddhaṃ vā kramād dravyaiśca saptabhiḥ

With the root-mantra he should place the hand of Shiva upon the crown of the linga; then in order, with the seven substances, one hundred, or half that, or half again —

Verse 28 (shiva.vayaviya.71.28)

hutvā hutvā spṛśelliṅgaṃ vedikāṃ ca punaḥ punaḥ | pūrṇāhutiṃ tato hutvā kramāddadyācca dakṣiṇām

after each oblation, one should touch the linga and the altar again and again; then, having offered the full oblation once more, one should give the officiant's fee in order.

Verse 29 (shiva.vayaviya.71.29)

ācāryāt pādamarddhaṃ vā hotṛṇāṃ sthapaterapi | tadarddhaṃ deyamanyebhyaḥ sadasyebhyaśca śaktitaḥ

A quarter or a half of the preceptor's fee should be given to the reciters and to the master-builder; half of that again should be given to the others and to the assembled members, according to one's means.

Verse 30 (shiva.vayaviya.71.30)

tataḥ śvabhre vṛṣaṃ haimaṃ kūrcaṃ vāpi niveśya ca | mṛdambhasā pañcagavyaiḥ punaḥ śuddhajalena ca

Then, having placed a golden bull, or else a tuft of kusha grass, in the pit, one should purify it with water and clay, then with the five products of the cow, and again with pure water,

Verse 31 (shiva.vayaviya.71.31)

śodhitāṃ candanāliptāṃ śvabhre brahmaśilāṃ kṣipet | karanyāsaṃ tataḥ kṛtvā navabhiḥ śaktināmabhiḥ

and one should place the purified Brahma-stone, anointed with sandal-paste, into the pit. Then, having performed the placing of the ritual hands with the nine names of the Shaktis,

Verse 32 (shiva.vayaviya.71.32)

haritālādidhātūṃśca bījagandhauṣadhairapi | śivaśāstroktavidhinā kṣiped brahmaśilopari

one should, according to the rite taught in the Shiva-scriptures, scatter the minerals beginning with orpiment, together with seeds, fragrant substances, and herbs, upon the Brahma-stone.

Verse 33 (shiva.vayaviya.71.33)

pratiliṅgaṃ tu saṃsthāpya kṣīravṛkṣasamudbhavam | sthitaṃ buddhvā tadutsṛjya liṅgaṃ brahmaśilāpari

Having set up in its place a small counter-linga made from a milk-yielding tree, and, once it is understood to be properly placed, then removing it, one should set the main linga upon the Brahma-stone.

Verse 34 (shiva.vayaviya.71.34)

prāgudakpravarāṃ kiñcit sthāpayenmūlavidyayā | piṇḍikāṃ cātha saṃyojya śāktaṃ mūlamanusmaran

One should place it with the root-mantra, oriented a little toward the east or north-east; then, having joined it with its pedestal, remembering the root-mantra of the Shakti,

Verse 35 (shiva.vayaviya.71.35)

bandhanaṃ bandhakadravyaiḥ kṛtvā sthānaṃ viśodhya ca | dattvā cārghyaṃ ca puṣpāṇi kuryuryavanikāṃ punaḥ

one should secure it with binding substances, and, having purified the place and offered arghya-water and flowers, one should draw the curtain again.

Verse 36 (shiva.vayaviya.71.36)

yathāyogyaṃ niṣekādi liṅgasya puratastadā | ānīya śayanasthānātkalaśānvinyasetkramāt

Then, having performed the sprinkling and other preliminary rites befittingly in front of the linga, one should bring the jars from the place of repose and set them in order.

Verse 37 (shiva.vayaviya.71.37)

mahāpūjāmathārabhya sampūjya kalaśāndaśa | śivamantramanusmṛtya śivakumbhajalāntare

Then, beginning the great worship, having duly worshipped the ten jars, and remembering the Shiva-mantra, one should take from within the water of the Shiva-jar —

Verse 38 (shiva.vayaviya.71.38)

aṅguṣṭhānāmikāyogādādāya tamudīrayet | nyasedīśānabhāgasya madhye liṅgasya mantravit

taking it up with the joined thumb and ring-finger, one who knows the mantras should recite it, and place it in the middle of the linga, in the portion belonging to Ishana.

Verse 39 (shiva.vayaviya.71.39)

śaktiṃ nyasettathā vidyāṃ vidyeśāṃśca yathākramam | liṅgamūle śivajalaistato liṅgaṃ niṣecayet

One should likewise place the Shakti, then Vidya, and then the Vidyeshas, each in due order; then, at the base of the linga, one should sprinkle the linga with the waters of Shiva.

Verse 40 (shiva.vayaviya.71.40)

varddhanyā piṇḍikāṃ liṅgaṃ vidyeśakalaśaiḥ punaḥ | abhiṣicyāsanaṃ paścādādhārādyaṃ prakalpayet

Having anointed the pedestal and the linga with the Vardhani water and again with the jars of the Vidyeshas, one should afterward fashion the seat, beginning with the support.

Verse 41 (shiva.vayaviya.71.41)

kṛtvā pañcakalānyāsaṃ dīptaṃ liṅgamanusmaret | āvāhayet śivau sākṣāt prāñjaliḥ prāgudaṅmukhaḥ

Having performed the placement of the five kalās, one should meditate on the linga as blazing with light; with joined palms, facing east or north, one should then invoke Shiva and Shakti there in person.

Verse 42 (shiva.vayaviya.71.42)

vṛṣādhirājamāruhya vimānaṃ vā nabhastalāt | alaṅkṛtaṃ sahāyāntaṃ devyā devamanusmaran | sarvābharaṇaśobhāḍhyaṃ sarvamaṅgalaniḥsvanaiḥ

One should meditate on the Lord mounted upon his sovereign Bull, or upon his aerial car descending from the vault of the sky, adorned, together with his attendants and with the Goddess, resplendent with every ornament, amid the sounds of every auspicious instrument,

Verse 43 (shiva.vayaviya.71.43)

brahmaviṣṇumaheśārkaśakrādyairdevadānavaiḥ | ānandaklinnasarvāṅgairvinyastāñjalimastakaiḥ

surrounded by Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesha, the Sun, Indra, and the other gods and demons, all of whose limbs are wet with the tears of bliss, their joined palms placed upon their heads,

Verse 44 (shiva.vayaviya.71.44)

stuvadbhireva nṛtyadbhirnamadbhirabhito vṛtam | tataḥ pañcopacāraiśca kṛtvā pūjāṃ samāpayet

praising him, dancing, and bowing before him on every side. Then, having performed the worship with the five upachāras, one should bring it to completion.

Verse 45 (shiva.vayaviya.71.45)

nātaḥ parataraḥ kaścidvidhiḥ pañcopacārakāt | pratiṣṭhāṃ liṅgavatkuryāt pratimāsvapi sarvataḥ

There is no rite higher than this rite of the five offerings. In every respect, one should perform the installation for images just as for the linga.

Verse 46 (shiva.vayaviya.71.46)

lakṣaṇoddhārasamaye kāryaṃ nayanamocanam | jalādhivāse śayane śāyayettāṃstvadhomukhīm

At the time of drawing out the marks, the opening of the eyes should be performed instead, for images; at the water-residence and at the rite of repose, one should lay such images face-down.

Verse 47 (shiva.vayaviya.71.47)

kumbhodaśāyitāṃ mantrairhṛdi tāṃ sanniyojayet | kṛtālayāṃ parāmāhuḥ pratiṣṭhāmakṛtālayāt

Having laid it in the water of the jar, one should, with mantras, join it to its heart. They call the installation performed for an image that already has a temple built for it supreme, as against one performed before the temple has been built.

Verse 48 (shiva.vayaviya.71.48)

śaktaḥ kṛtālayaḥ paścāt pratiṣṭhāvidhimācaret | aśaktaścetpratiṣṭhāpya liṅgaṃ beramathāpi vā

One who is able should first build the temple and only afterward perform the rite of installation; but if one is unable, one may install the linga or the image first.

Verse 49 (shiva.vayaviya.71.49)

śakteranuguṇaṃ paścāt prakurvīta śivālayam | gṛhārcāṃ ca punarvakṣye pratiṣṭhāvidhimuttamam

Afterward, according to one's means, one should build the temple of Shiva. I shall now again describe the supreme rite of installation for household worship.

Verse 50 (shiva.vayaviya.71.50)

kṛtvā kanīyasaṃ beraṃ liṅgaṃ vā lakṣaṇānvitam | ayane cottare prāpte śuklapakṣe śubhe dine

Having made a smaller image or linga endowed with its proper characteristics, when the northern course of the sun has arrived, in the bright fortnight, on an auspicious day —

Verse 51 (shiva.vayaviya.71.51)

vedīṃ kṛtvā śubhe deśe tatrābjaṃ pūrvavallikhet | vikīrya patrapuṣpādyairmadhye kumbhaṃ nidhāya ca

having made an altar in an auspicious place, one should there draw the lotus as before; having scattered leaves, flowers, and the like, and placed the jar in the middle,

Verse 52 (shiva.vayaviya.71.52)

paritastasya caturaḥ kalaśān dikṣu vinyaset | pañca brahmāṇi tadbījaisteṣu pañcasu pañcabhiḥ

one should set four more jars in the directions around it; the five Brahmans, with their respective seed-syllables, should be placed in these five jars, each with its own —

Verse 53 (shiva.vayaviya.71.53)

nyasya sampūjya mudrādi darśayitvābhirakṣya ca | viśodhya liṅgaṃ beraṃ vā mṛttoyādyairyathā purā

having placed and duly worshipped them, and having shown the mudras and the rest, and protected the rite, one should purify the linga or image with clay, water, and the other substances, as before,

Verse 54 (shiva.vayaviya.71.54)

sthāpayetpuṣpasañchannamuttarasthe varāsane | nidhāya puṣpaṃ śirasi prokṣayet prokṣaṇījalaiḥ

and set it, covered with flowers, upon an excellent seat placed to the north; having placed a flower upon its head, one should sprinkle it with the waters of purification.

Verse 55 (shiva.vayaviya.71.55)

samabhyarcya punaḥ puṣpairjayaśabdādipūrvakam | kumbhairīśānavidyāntaiḥ snāpayenmūlavidyayā

Having again duly worshipped it with flowers, to the accompaniment of shouts of victory and the like, one should bathe it with the root-mantra, using the jars ending with the Ishana-Vidya jar.

Verse 56 (shiva.vayaviya.71.56)

tataḥ pañcakalānyāsaṃ kṛtvā pūjāṃ ca pūrvavat | nityamārādhayettatra devyā devaṃ trilocanam

Then, having performed the placement of the five kalās and worship as before, one should there daily worship the three-eyed God together with the Goddess.

Verse 57 (shiva.vayaviya.71.57)

ekamevātha vā kumbhaṃ mūrtimantrasamanvitam | nyasya padmāntare sarvaṃ śeṣaṃ pūrvavadācaret

Or else, having placed a single jar joined with the form-mantra in the middle of the lotus, one should perform all the rest exactly as before.

Verse 58 (shiva.vayaviya.71.58)

atyantopahataṃ liṅgaṃ viśodhya sthāpayetpunaḥ | samprokṣayedupahataṃ manāgupahataṃ yajet

A linga that has been severely damaged should be purified and installed anew; one that has been damaged should be re-consecrated by sprinkling; one that is only slightly damaged may simply be worshipped as it is.

Verse 59 (shiva.vayaviya.71.59)

liṅgāni bāṇasaṃjñāni sthāpanīyāni vā na vā | tāni pūrvaṃ śivenaiva saṃskṛtāni yatastataḥ

As for the lingas called bāṇa — whether they need to be formally installed or not — since these were already consecrated by Shiva himself long ago,

Verse 60 (shiva.vayaviya.71.60)

śeṣāṇi sthāpanīyāni yāni dṛṣṭāni bāṇavat | svayamudbhūtaliṅge ca divye cārṣe tathaiva ca

only the rest need to be formally installed; whichever are found already resembling a Banalinga — whether self-manifested, or divine, or set up by sages —

Verse 61 (shiva.vayaviya.71.61)

apīṭhe pīṭhamāveśya kṛtvā samprokṣaṇaṃ vidhim | yajettatra śivaṃ teṣāṃ pratiṣṭhā na vidhīyate

if such a linga lacks a pedestal, one should fit a pedestal to it, and, having performed the rite of sprinkling-consecration, worship Shiva there; for such lingas, full installation is not prescribed.

Verse 62 (shiva.vayaviya.71.62)

dagdhaṃ ślathaṃ kṣatāṅgaṃ ca kṣipelliṅgaṃ jalāśaye | sandhānayogyaṃ sandhāya pratiṣṭhāvidhimācaret

A linga that has been burnt, has become loose, or has a damaged part, should be cast into a body of water; but if it is fit to be repaired, one should repair it and perform the rite of installation.

Verse 63 (shiva.vayaviya.71.63)

berādvā vikalālliṅgāddevapūjāpuraḥsaram | udvāsya hṛdi sandhānaṃ tyāgaṃ vā yuktamācaret

From an image or a damaged linga, having first worshipped the god, one should perform the appropriate rite — de-installation, joining the deity to one's own heart, and either its repair or its discarding, as is fitting.

Verse 64 (shiva.vayaviya.71.64)

ekāhapūjāvihatau kuryād dviguṇamarcanam | dvirātre ca mahāpūjāṃ samprokṣaṇamataḥ param

If the worship is interrupted for a single day, one should perform double the worship the next day; if for two nights, one should perform the great worship; beyond that, one should perform the rite of sprinkling-consecration.

Verse 65 (shiva.vayaviya.71.65)

māsādūrdhvamanekāhaṃ pūjā yadi vihanyate | pratiṣṭhā procyate kaiścitkaiścitsamprokṣaṇakramaḥ

If the worship is interrupted for many days, more than a month, some say it requires full re-installation, while others say the procedure of sprinkling-consecration suffices.

Verse 66 (shiva.vayaviya.71.66)

samprokṣaṇe tu liṅgāderdevamudvāsya pūrvavat | aṣṭapañcakrameṇaiva snāpayitvā mṛdambhasā

In the rite of sprinkling-consecration, having first de-installed the god from the linga and so forth as before, one should bathe it, in the order of the eight or the five kinds of substances, with clay and water,

Verse 67 (shiva.vayaviya.71.67)

gavāṃ rasaiśca saṃsnāpya darbhatoyairviśodhya ca | prokṣayetprokṣaṇītoyairmūlenāṣṭottaraṃ śatam

then bathe it with the products of the cow, purify it with kusha-water, and sprinkle it with the waters of purification, one hundred and eight times, with the root-mantra.

Verse 68 (shiva.vayaviya.71.68)

sapuṣpaṃ sakuśaṃ pāṇiṃ nyasya liṅgasya mastake | pañcavāraṃ japenmūlamaṣṭottaraśatottaram

Having placed a hand holding flowers and kusha grass upon the crown of the linga, one should recite the root-mantra one hundred and eight times, five times over.

Verse 69 (shiva.vayaviya.71.69)

tato mūlena mūrddhādipīṭhāntaṃ saṃspṛśedapi | pūjāṃ ca mahatīṃ kuryāddevamāvāhya pūrvavat

Then, with the root-mantra, one should touch it from the crown down to the pedestal, and, having invoked the god as before, perform the great worship.

Verse 70 (shiva.vayaviya.71.70)

alabdhe sthāpite liṅge śivasthāne jale'tha vā | vahnau ravau tathā vyomni bhagavantaṃ śivaṃ yajet

If no installed linga can be obtained, one should worship the Lord Shiva in a place sacred to Shiva, or in water, or in fire, or in the sun, or indeed in the sky.
