Maheshvara Khanda · Chapter 103

Brahma's Hymn and the Cooling of the Fire-Linga into Arunachala

Chapter 102All chaptersChapter 104

Verse 1 (skanda.1.103.1)

brahmovāca athāhamuccaranvedānaśeṣairvadanaiḥ śivam astauṣaṁ bhaktisaṁpūrṇaṁ kṛtvā mānasamarcanam

Brahma said: Then, uttering the Vedas with all my faces, I praised Shiva, full of devotion, having performed worship in my mind.

Verse 2 (skanda.1.103.2)

namaḥ śivāya mahate sarvalokaikahetave yena prakāśyate sarvaṁ dhriyate satataṁ namaḥ

Salutation to great Shiva, the sole cause of all the worlds, by whom everything is illumined and constantly sustained — salutation again and again.

Verse 3 (skanda.1.103.3)

viśvavyāptamidaṁ tejaḥ prakāśayati saṁtatam nekṣaṁte tvaddayāhīnā jātyaṁdhā bhāskaraṁ yathā

This radiance, pervading the universe, shines forth unceasingly; yet those bereft of your grace do not perceive it, just as the born-blind cannot see the sun.

Verse 4 (skanda.1.103.4)

bhūliṁgamamalaṁ hyetaddṛśyamadhyātmacakṣuṣā aṁtassthaṁ vā bahissthaṁ vā tvadbhaktairanubhūyate

This pure earthly linga is seen only with the eye of the inner self; your devotees experience it as dwelling both within and without.

Verse 5 (skanda.1.103.5)

aparicchedyamākāramaṁtarātmani yoginaḥ tadetattava deveśa jvalitaṁ darpaṇo yathā

O lord of gods! This unbounded form within the inmost self of the yogi is, like a blazing reflection in a mirror, none other than your own.

Verse 6 (skanda.1.103.6)

athavā śāṁkarī śaktiḥ satyā'ṇorapyaṇīyasī matto nānyataraḥ kaścidyanmayyapi vilīyate

Or else it is the Shakti of Shankara, real yet subtler than the atom itself; there is none other than me into whom that too does not finally merge.

Verse 7 (skanda.1.103.7)

aṇuste karuṇāpātraṁ mahattvaṁ dhruvamaśnute nādhiko'sti parastvatto na matto'pi tadāśrayāt

Even an atom, becoming a vessel of your compassion, surely attains greatness; there is none higher than you, nor, apart from that shelter, is there any higher than me.

Verse 8 (skanda.1.103.8)

tvayyarpitaṁ manastvato na viyogamapekṣate vācaḥ kathaṁ pravṛttiḥ syāttava vaibhavakīrttane

The mind offered to you never seeks separation from you; how then could speech ever find itself equal to proclaiming your glory?

Verse 9 (skanda.1.103.9)

svayamīśa mahādeva prasīda bhuvanādhika ādiśa prayataṁ bhaktamapekṣitaniyuktiṣu

O Lord unto yourself, O Mahadeva, O one greater than all worlds! Be gracious, and instruct your humble devotee in the tasks now required of him.

Verse 10 (skanda.1.103.10)

idaṁ vijñāpya vinayānnamaskṛtvā punaḥpunaḥ prāṁjalirdevadeveśaṁ nyaṣīdaṁ savidhe vibho

Having submitted this, and bowing again and again in humility, O lord, with joined palms I sat down close beside the God of gods.

Verse 11 (skanda.1.103.11)

atha viṣṇurnavāṁbhodagaṁbhīradhvanirabhyadhāt vācaḥ kṛtārthanbhūyaḥ śuklāḥ śaṁkarakīrttanaiḥ

Then Vishnu, his voice deep as a fresh raincloud, spoke — his words already made pure and fruitful by the praise of Shankara.

Verse 12 (skanda.1.103.12)

jaya tribhuvanādhīśa jaya gaṁgādhara prabho jaya nātha virūpākṣa jaya caṁdrārddhaśekhara

Victory to you, lord of the three worlds! Victory to you, O Ganga-bearer! Victory to you, O Lord of the strange eyes! Victory to you, O bearer of the half-moon!

Verse 13 (skanda.1.103.13)

avyājamamitaṁ śaṁbho kāruṇyaṁ tava varddhate yena nirdhūtamakhilaṁ bhakteṣu jñānamāhitam

O Shambhu, your unfeigned and boundless compassion ever grows, by which all knowledge, purified, becomes established in your devotees.

Verse 14 (skanda.1.103.14)

pālanaṁ sarvavidyānāṁ prāpaṇaṁ bhūtisaṁcayaiḥ purāṇaṁ ca saputrāṇāṁ pitureva pravardhanam

The nurturing of all learning, the granting of accumulated prosperity, and the constant growth, like that of a father together with his sons — all this is from you alone.

Verse 15 (skanda.1.103.15)

O Ishana! I am unable to praise even a single one of your hundred forms with ever-fresh hymns — how then could I praise their entire assembly!

Verse 16 (skanda.1.103.16)

tvameva tvāmalaṁ vettuṁ yadi vā tvatprasādataḥ bhramaraḥ kīṭamākṛṣya svātmānaṁ kiṁ na cānayet

You alone are able to know yourself fully, or one may know you only by your grace; does not the black bee, drawing the grub to itself, transform it into its own likeness?

Verse 17 (skanda.1.103.17)

devāstvadaṁśasaṁbhūtiprabhavo na bhavanti kim apyāyasyāgnikīlasya dāhe śaktirna kiṁ bhavet

Are not the gods themselves powerful precisely because they arise from a portion of you? Does not even a single spark of fire possess the power to burn?

Verse 18 (skanda.1.103.18)

deśakālakriyāyogādyathāgnerbhedasambhavaḥ tathā viṣayabhedena tvameko'pi vibhidyase

Just as fire appears differentiated through the combination of place, time, and action, so too, though you are one, you appear divided through the differences of your objects.

Verse 19 (skanda.1.103.19)

anugrahaparo deva mūrtiṁ darśaya śaṁkara āvayorakhilādhāra nayanānaṁdadāyinīm

O God, O Shankara, foundation of all things! Intent on grace, show to us both that form of yours which delights the eyes.

Verse 20 (skanda.1.103.20)

evaṁ praṇamatordevaḥ śraddhābhaktisamanvitam prasasāda paraṁ śaṁbhuḥ stuvatorāvayordvayoḥ

Thus, as we two bowed with faith and devotion and offered our praise, the God Shambhu became exceedingly pleased with us both.

Verse 21 (skanda.1.103.21)

tejaḥstaṁbhātpunastasmāddevaścandrārddhaśekharaḥ āvirbabhūva puruṣaḥ kapilaḥ kālakandharaḥ

Then from that very pillar of fire, the god who bears the half-moon manifested again in the form of a man — tawny in hue, with a throat dark as night.

Verse 22 (skanda.1.103.22)

paraśuṁ bālahariṇaṁ karairabhayaviśramau dadhānaḥ puruṣo'vādītputrāvāvāmiti prabhuḥ

Bearing in his hands an axe and a young deer, together with the gestures of protection and boon-granting, that lordly man said: 'You two are my sons.'

Verse 23 (skanda.1.103.23)

parituṣṭo'smi yuvayorbhaktyā yuktātmanormayi bhavataṁ sarvalokānāṁ sṛṣṭirakṣādhipau yuvām

I am well pleased with you two, your souls joined to me in devotion; you two shall be the lords of the creation and the preservation of all the worlds.

Verse 24 (skanda.1.103.24)

yuvayoriṣṭasiddhyarthamāvirbhūto'smyahaṁ yataḥ varaṁ vṛṇutamanyaṁ ca varado'hamupāgataḥ

It is only to accomplish the desire of you both that I have manifested here; therefore ask for a boon — I have come here precisely to grant one.

Verse 25 (skanda.1.103.25)

iti devasya vacanātsaprītau ca kṛtāṁjalī vijñāpayāmāsivatau svaṁ svamarthaṁ pṛthakpṛthak

Hearing these words of the God, we two, joyfully joining our hands, began each to submit our own separate purpose.

Verse 26 (skanda.1.103.26)

ahaṁ mantraiḥ śiśuprāyajagattrayavidhāyakaḥ saṁstuvanvaidikairmaṁtrairīśānamaparājitam

I, who through mantras fashion all three worlds as if they were mere children, spoke while praising the unconquerable Ishana with Vedic hymns.

Verse 27 (skanda.1.103.27)

namasyehamidaṁ rūpaṁ śaśvadvaradamīśvaram tejomayaṁ mahādevaṁ yogidhyeyaṁ niraṁjanam

I bow to this ever boon-granting form of the Lord, this radiant Mahadeva, spotless, the object of the yogis' meditation.

Verse 28 (skanda.1.103.28)

āpūryamāṇaṁ bhavatā tejasā gaganāṁtaram paripṛcchyaḥ surāvāsaḥ kṣaṇāddeva bhaviṣyati

O God, this whole expanse of sky is being filled by your radiance; because of this the very dwelling of the gods will, in a moment, become imperilled.

Verse 29 (skanda.1.103.29)

siddhacāraṇagandharvā devāśca paramarṣayaḥ nāvasandivi saṁcāraṁ labheraṁstejasā tava

Siddhas, charanas, gandharvas, the gods, and the great sages — because of your radiance they will no longer be able even to move about in heaven.

Verse 30 (skanda.1.103.30)

pṛthvī ca sakalā caiva tapyamānā tavaujasā carācarasamutpattikṣamā naiva bhavipyati

And this whole earth, scorched by your fire, will no longer remain capable of bringing forth beings, moving or unmoving.

Verse 31 (skanda.1.103.31)

upasaṁhṛtya tejaḥ svamaruṇācalasaṁjñayā bhava sthāvaraliṁgaṁ tvaṁ lokānugrahakāraṇāt

Therefore, withdrawing your radiance within yourself, become, under the name Arunachala, a fixed and stationary linga, for the grace of all the worlds.

Verse 32 (skanda.1.103.32)

jyotirmayamidaṁ rūpamaruṇācalasaṁjñitam ye namanti narā bhaktyā te bhavantyamarādhikāḥ

This form of light, known as Arunachala — those men who bow to it with devotion become greater even than the immortals.

Verse 33 (skanda.1.103.33)

sevaṁtāṁ sakalā lokāḥ siddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ gaṇāśca vividhā bhūmau mānuṣaṁ bhāvamāsthitāḥ

Let all the worlds, the siddhas, and the great sages serve it, and let the various divine hosts too, established on earth in human form, serve it.

Verse 34 (skanda.1.103.34)

divyārāma samudbhūtakalpakādyāḥ suradrumāḥ sevinastvāṁ prarohaṁtu bharitā vividhaiḥ phalaiḥ

In its divine grove let the celestial trees, the wish-fulfilling tree foremost among them, growing there in your service, flourish laden with every kind of fruit.

Verse 35 (skanda.1.103.35)

divyauṣadhigaṇāssarve siṁhādyā mṛgajātayaḥ praśāṁtāḥ parivarttaṁtā pāpakalmaṣanāśanam

Let all the hosts of divine herbs, and creatures of the deer kind headed by the lion, wander there in peace, in this place that destroys sin and impurity.

Verse 36 (skanda.1.103.36)

ayanadvayabhinnena gamanenāpi saṁyutaḥ na laṁghayiṣyati raviḥ śṛṁgaṁ liṁgatanostava

The sun, though it travels by differing paths through its two solstices, shall never once overstep the summit of your linga-body.

Verse 37 (skanda.1.103.37)

divya duṁdubhiśaṁkhānāṁ ghoṣaiḥ puṣpaughavṛṣṭibhiḥ sevito bhava deva tvamapsaronṛtyagītibhiḥ

O God, be served by the sounds of divine kettle-drums and conches, by showers of flowers, and by the dance and song of the celestial nymphs.

Verse 38 (skanda.1.103.38)

amaratvaṁ ca siddhatvaṁ rasasiddhīśca nirvṛtim labhaṁtāṁ mānuṣā nityaṁ tvatsaṁnidhimupāgatāḥ

Let the men who attain to your presence forever obtain immortality, the state of the siddhas, the perfections of alchemy, and the bliss of liberation.

Verse 39 (skanda.1.103.39)

īśatvaṁ ca vaśitvaṁ ca saubhāgyaṁ kālavaṁcanam tvāmāśritya narāssarve labhaṁtāmaruṇācala

O Arunachala! Taking refuge in you, let all men obtain lordship, the power of subjugation, good fortune, and mastery over time itself.

Verse 40 (skanda.1.103.40)

sarvāvayavadānena sarvavyādhivināśanāt sarvābhīṣṭapradānena dṛśyo bhava mahītale

By granting the sight of all your parts, by destroying every affliction, and by bestowing every desired thing, become visible upon this earth to all.

Verse 41 (skanda.1.103.41)

tatheti varadaṁ devamaruṇādripatiṁ śivam praṇamya kamalānāthaḥ prārthayannidamabravīt

Bowing to that boon-granting God, Shiva, Lord of the red mountain, who had said 'so be it', the Lord of Lakshmi then spoke this prayer.

Verse 42 (skanda.1.103.42)

prasīda karuṇāpūrṇa śoṇaśaileśvara prabho maheśa sarvalokānāṁ hitāya prakaṭodaya

O Lord full of compassion, O ruler of the red mountain! Be gracious; O Mahesha, manifest for the welfare of all the worlds.

Verse 43 (skanda.1.103.43)

yadāhaṁ tvāmupāśritya jagadrakṣaṇadakṣiṇaḥ śrīpatitvamanuprāptastadā bhaktā bhavaṁtu te

Since, taking refuge in you, I have become skilled in the protection of the world and obtained the lordship of Sri, let your devotees also become mine.

Verse 44 (skanda.1.103.44)

nālpapuṇyairupāsyeta tvadrūpaṁ mahadadbhutam mayā ca brahmaṇā caivamadṛṣṭapadaśekharaḥ

Those of little merit cannot worship this great and wondrous form of yours, whose crowning summit remained unseen even by me and by Brahma.

Verse 45 (skanda.1.103.45)

Verse 46 (skanda.1.103.46)

upavāsairvrataiḥ satrairupahāraistathārcanaiḥ tvāmarcayaṁti manujāḥ sārvabhaumā bhavaṁtu te

The men who worship you with fasting, vows, sacrificial sessions, offerings and ritual worship — let them become sovereigns of the whole earth.

Verse 47 (skanda.1.103.47)

ārāmaṁ maṁḍapaṁ cāpi kūpaṁ vidhiviśodhanam kurvatāmaruṇādrīśa saṁnidhāne punarbhava

O Lord of the red mountain! Those who build a garden, a pavilion, or a well duly purified — grant them once more a place close to your presence.

Verse 48 (skanda.1.103.48)

aṁgapradakṣiṇaṁ kurvannaṣṭaiśvaryasamanvitaḥ aśeṣapātakaiḥ sadyo vimukto nirmalāśayaḥ

Whoever circumambulates your body becomes possessed of all eight powers, instantly freed of every sin, his heart made pure.

Verse 49 (skanda.1.103.49)

āvāmapyavimuṁcaṁtau sadā tvatpādapaṁkajam dhyātavyaṁ manujaiḥ sarvaistava saṁnidhimāgataiḥ

May we two also, never releasing hold of your lotus feet, remain forever fit objects of meditation for all men who come into your presence.

Verse 50 (skanda.1.103.50)

tathāstviti varaṁ dattvā viṣṇave caṁdraśekharaḥ bharuṇācalarūpeṇa prāptaḥ sthāvaraliṁgatām

Saying 'so be it', and granting this boon to Vishnu, Shiva who bears the crescent moon attained, in the form of Arunachala, the state of a fixed and stationary linga.

Verse 51 (skanda.1.103.51)

taijasaṁ liṁgametaddhi sarvalokaikakāraṇam aruṇādririti khyātaṁ dṛśyate vasudhātale

This linga of light, the sole cause of all the worlds, known by the name Arunadri, is seen upon the surface of this earth.

Verse 52 (skanda.1.103.52)

yugāṁtasamaye kṣubdhaiścaturbhirapi sāgaraiḥ api nirmagnalokāṁtairaspṛṣṭāṁtikabhūtalam

Even by the four oceans, agitated at the end of the age and submerging every world, not even its nearest ground was ever touched.

Verse 53 (skanda.1.103.53)

gajapramāṇaiḥ pṛṣataiḥ pūrayaṁto jagattrayam puṣkarādyā mahāmeghā viśrāṁtā yasya sānuni

The great clouds headed by Pushkara, which fill the three worlds with drops as vast as elephants, find their rest upon its very peaks.

Verse 54 (skanda.1.103.54)

pravṛtte bhūtasaṁhāre prakṛtau pratisaṁcare bhaviṣyatsarvabījāni niṣeduryatra niścayam

When the destruction of all beings occurs, and the reabsorption of primal nature sets in, the seeds of every future creation come to rest, without fail, upon this very mountain.

Verse 55 (skanda.1.103.55)

mayā cāhūyamānebhyaḥ pralayānaṁtaraṁ punaḥ yatpādaseviviprebhyo vedādhyayanasaṁgrahaḥ

After the deluge, when I call them forth again, it is from the brahmins who have served at its very feet that the study of the Vedas is once more gathered together.

Verse 56 (skanda.1.103.56)

sarvāsāmapi vidyānāṁ kalānāṁ śāstrasaṁpadām āgamānāṁ ca vedānāṁ yatra satyavyavasthitiḥ

The true foundation of all learning, of the arts, of the treasures of scripture, of the Agamas and of the Vedas, is likewise established in this very place.

Verse 57 (skanda.1.103.57)

yadguhāgahvarāṁtassthā munayaḥ śaṁsitavratāḥ jaṭinaḥ saṁprakāśaṁte koṭisūryāgnitejasaḥ

Within whose caves and mountain hollows the matted-haired sages, their vows fulfilled, shine forth radiant as the fire of ten million suns.

Verse 58 (skanda.1.103.58)

Where Sadashiva, of the nature of primal sound, embodied in the five-syllabled mantra through the mantras of the five Brahmas, dwells enthroned upon the seat of the syllable A.

Verse 59 (skanda.1.103.59)

aṣṭabhiśca sadā liṁgairaṣṭadikpālapūjitaḥ aṣṭamūrttitayā yo'yamaṣṭasiddhipradāyakaḥ

Who, ever possessed of eight lingas, worshipped by the eight guardians of the directions, bestows, in his eightfold form, the eight great powers.
