Verse 1 (skanda.1.107.1)
gautama uvāca purā nārāyaṇaḥ kalpe śayānaḥ salilārṇave śeṣaparyaṁkaśayane kadācinnaiva budhyata
Gautama said: Once, in an age long past, Narayana, lying asleep upon the ocean of waters on his couch of Shesha, for some reason did not awaken.
Verse 2 (skanda.1.107.2)

Beholding the universe filled with darkness, unrecognizable and without any mark, even at the very close of the age, the eternal sages fell into distress.
Verse 3 (skanda.1.107.3)

'Even the gods, unable to behold the full Person of Light, how indeed could they find peace from this darkness that so overwhelms them?'
Verse 5 (skanda.1.107.5)
iti niścitya manasā devadevamumāpatim ciṁtayāmāsurātmasthaṁ tejorāśiṁ niraṁjanam
Having thus resolved in their minds, they meditated upon the God of gods, the spouse of Uma, as a spotless mass of light dwelling within their own inmost self.
Verse 6 (skanda.1.107.6)
tataḥ prasanno bhagavāṁstejorāśirmaheśvaraḥ viśvāvanāya vijñaptaḥ praṇatairnityasūribhiḥ
Then, pleased by the prostration and entreaty of the eternal sages, the blessed Maheshvara, that very mass of light, entreated for the protection of the universe, —

tatastejomayācchaṁbhoḥ sphuliṁgāṁśusamudbhavāḥ udastaṁbhaṁta devānāṁ trayastriṁśacca koṭayaḥ
— from that radiant Shambhu, thirty-three crore gods, born like the sparks and rays of that light, rose up and stood forth.
Verse 8 (skanda.1.107.8)

'Shame upon me, who lay bereft of self-knowledge, my consciousness stolen away by sleep; rather let me take refuge in Shankara, the doer of all things — in the sight of that pure Shambhu, difficult for those of little merit to attain, which quells every fault and grants every desired fruit.'
Verse 12 (skanda.1.107.12)
