brahmovāca atha gaurī purārātiṁ praṇamya jagadaṁbikā ayācattādṛśā śaṁbhumavinābhāvamātmanaḥ
Brahma said: Then, bowing before the foe of the triple city, Gauri, mother of the world, asked of Shambhu his own inseparable oneness with herself.

idaṁ vijñāpayāmāsa lokānugrahakāraṇāt kṛpayā parayā pūrṇā gaurī saṁvādasuṁdarī
For the grace of the worlds, filled with supreme compassion, Gauri, lovely in her speech, made this petition.
Verse 3 (skanda.1.114.3)
na tyājyametatte rūpamatra dṛṣṭimanoharam ahaṁ tvayā na ca tyājyā sāparādhāpi sarvadā manoharamidaṁ rūpametatte lokamaṁgalam
'This form of yours, delightful to the eye, is not to be given up here; and I too, even should I offend, am never to be forsaken by you — this delightful, world-blessing form —'
Verse 4 (skanda.1.114.4)
ālokyatāṁ sadā sarvairdivyagandhasamanvitam bhujaṁgagaralabrahmakapālaśivabhasmabhiḥ
'— let it be beheld by all always, joined with divine fragrance; enough now of these terrible garbs — the serpent, poison, Brahma's skull, and sacred ash.'
Verse 5 (skanda.1.114.5)
bhīṣaṇairalamīśāna jaya veṣaparigrahaiḥ sukumāro bhaverdivyamālyagaṁdhāṁbarādibhiḥ
'O Ishana, be victorious! Become gentle instead, with divine garlands, fragrances, and garments.'

bhūṣito ratnabhūṣābhirviharasva maheśvara āgatā nityamīśāna devagandharvakanyakāḥ
'Adorned with jewelled ornaments, sport at ease, O Maheshvara. O Ishana, let the daughters of gods and gandharvas ever come here.'
Verse 7 (skanda.1.114.7)
sevaṁtāmatra deveśaṁ nṛtyavāditragītibhiḥ gaṇāśca mānuṣā bhūtvā sevaṁtāṁ tvāmaharniśam
'Let them serve the Lord of gods here with dance, music, and song; and let the ganas too, taking human form, serve you day and night.'
Verse 8 (skanda.1.114.8)
tvatprasādādayaṁ deva sugaṁdhiḥ puṣṭivarddhanaḥ āvayoḥ saṁgamo dṛṣṭo bhūyātsarvārthadāyakaḥ
'By your grace, this fragrant, nourishing form — let this union of ours, now beheld, become the bestower of every good.'
Verse 9 (skanda.1.114.9)
gṛhītamatra deveśa sarvamaṁtrātmakaṁ vapuḥ caritaṁ tava kaiṁkaryamastu bhaktiḥ sadā tava
'O Lord of gods, here I have taken on a body of the very nature of every mantra; let my conduct be service to you alone, and let devotion to you remain ever mine.'
Verse 10 (skanda.1.114.10)
jñānājñānakṛtaṁ nityamaparādhasahasrakam kṣamyatāṁ tava bhaktānāmananyaśaraṇekṣaṇāt
'The thousand transgressions ever committed, whether knowingly or unknowingly, of your devotees, who see no refuge but you alone — let them be forgiven.'
Verse 11 (skanda.1.114.11)
iti devyā vacaḥ śrutvā śambhuḥ śoṇācaleśvaraḥ tameva varadaḥ prādādvaraṁ sarvamabhīpsitam
Hearing this word of the Goddess, Shambhu, Lord of Shonachala, as boon-giver, granted her every boon she had desired.
Verse 12 (skanda.1.114.12)
ābhāṣya gaurīṁ kutukādraṁtukāmaḥ svayaṁ śivaḥ dhāraya tvaṁ mṛgamadaṁ manojñamidamūcivān
Addressing Gauri with playful delight, Shiva himself, desiring to sport, said: 'Wear this delightful musk' — thus he spoke, and told her its story.
Verse 13 (skanda.1.114.13)
mahādeva uvāca pulakākhyo mahāndaityo mṛgarūpī tapodhikam kṛtvā prāpa varaṁ mattaḥ saugandhyaṁ paramādbhutam
Mahadeva said: 'A great demon named Pulaka, in the form of a deer, having performed intense austerity, obtained from me the most wondrous boon of fragrance.'
Verse 14 (skanda.1.114.14)
labdhvā varaṁ svagandhenāmohayatsurayoṣitaḥ tathaivādharmasaṁprāpto babādhe sakalaṁ jagat
'Having obtained the boon, he bewildered the celestial women with his own fragrance; falling thus into unrighteousness, he oppressed the whole world.'
Verse 15 (skanda.1.114.15)
devairabhyarthitaḥ sohamāhūyāsuranāyakam vimuṁca lokarakṣārthamāsuraṁ dehamityaśām
'Entreated by the gods, I summoned that lord of demons and commanded him, for the world's protection, to give up his demonic body.'
Verse 16 (skanda.1.114.16)
pulaka uvāca tyakṣyāmi devadeveśa dehametaṁ tvadājñayā praṇamya bhaktimanasā māmapyarcedamūcivān
Pulaka said: 'O God of gods, by your command I shall give up this body' — bowing with a heart full of devotion, he also said to me: 'Worship me too.'
Verse 17 (skanda.1.114.17)
madaṁgasaṁbhavaṁ divyaṁ saurabhaṁ viśvamohanam dhāryatāṁ deva deveśa sadā sādaracetasā
'This divine fragrance, born of my own body, bewitching to the universe — O God, O Lord of gods, let it be worn always with a reverent heart.'
Verse 18 (skanda.1.114.18)
pulakasvedajāto hi sadā prakhyāyatāṁ tava ayaṁ mṛgamado loke śṛṅgārarasavarddhanaḥ
'Let it ever be known as born of the sweat of thrilling joy [pulaka]; let this musk, in the world, increase the very flavour of romantic delight.'
Verse 19 (skanda.1.114.19)
tvatpriyaḥ kāṁtisaubhāgyarūpalāvaṇyadāyakaḥ visṛjāmi nijaṁ dehaṁ devadeva jagatpate
'Dear to you, bestower of splendour, good fortune, beauty, and grace — O God of gods, O Lord of the world, I now release this body of mine.'
Verse 20 (skanda.1.114.20)
sadā bahumato devyā divyasaurabhalubdhayā madaṁśasaṁbhavā ye syurmattapolabdhasaurabhāḥ
'Let it be ever held in the highest regard by the Goddess, who so cherishes divine fragrance; and let those born of a portion of me, who obtain fragrance through my own austerity —'
Verse 21 (skanda.1.114.21)
līyaṁtāṁ tava deveśa mūrtāvālepanacchalāt tatheti mayyuktavati sa daityaḥ pulakābhidhaḥ
'— O Lord of gods, merge into your very image, under the pretext of an unguent.' When I said, "so be it," that demon named Pulaka,
Verse 22 (skanda.1.114.22)
visasarja nijaṁ dehaṁ mayisanyastajīvitaḥ tatastadaṁgasaṁbhūtaṁ madaṁ bahulasaurabham
having entrusted his very life to me, gave up his own body; then that musk, rich with fragrance, born of his body —
Verse 23 (skanda.1.114.23)
adhārayamahaṁ premṇā śataśṛṁgāravarddhanam tapasā devadeveśi taptaṁ tava vapuḥ kṛśam
'— I bore it, with love, that which increases romance a hundredfold; upon this body of yours, O Goddess of the God of gods, made thin by the heat of your own austerity —'
Verse 24 (skanda.1.114.24)
madaṁgaṁ ca viyogātta idaṁ nirvāpayādhunā iti praśasya bahudhā pulakasnehamadbhutam
'— apply now this substance born of my own body, to soothe what was lost through our separation.' Thus, greatly praising Pulaka's wondrous devotion,
Verse 25 (skanda.1.114.25)
āliliṁpa mahādevaḥ pārvatīṁ premamaṁdirām apṛcchacca hasandevaḥ pārvatīṁ lalanākṛtim
Mahadeva anointed Parvati, that very abode of love, and, smiling, the God asked Parvati, of feminine form.
Verse 26 (skanda.1.114.26)
kimetaditi hastotthaṁ dṛṣṭvā taṁ jagadaṁbikā abravīdaruṇādrīśamānamya jagadaṁbikā
'What is this?' — beholding that thing risen in his hand, the mother of the world, bowing to the Lord of the red mountain, the mother of the world asked,
Verse 27 (skanda.1.114.27)
āgatiṁ tasya puṣpasya sadā svakaravartinaḥ
about the very coming of that flower, which always rested in his own hand.
Verse 28 (skanda.1.114.28)
devyuvāca ahaṁ kailāsaśikharāddevadeva tvadājñayā tapaḥ kartumanuprāptā kāṁcīṁ kanakatoraṇām
The Goddess said: 'O God of gods, I came from the peak of Kailasa, by your own command, to perform austerity at Kanchi with its golden gateways.'
Verse 29 (skanda.1.114.29)
avāpya mānasodbhūtaṁ kahlāramidamuttamam ārādhayaṁ mahādevamamlānagurusaurabham
'Having obtained this excellent white lotus born of the Manasa lake, unfading, of deep fragrance, I worshipped Mahadeva with it.'
Verse 30 (skanda.1.114.30)
yadakṣayamaviśrāṁtamarcanāyojitaṁ mayā avicchinnamahādīptiḥ kāmadhenughṛtāplutaḥ
'Which, imperishable and unceasing, I have kept devoted to worship, of unbroken and great splendour, drenched with the ghee of the wish-fulfilling cow.'
Verse 31 (skanda.1.114.31)
avekṣaṇīyo bhūpālairanupālyaśca sarvadā dharmalakṣaṇamādheyaṁ lokarakṣārthamādarāt
'It is to be watched over and always sustained by kings; for the world's protection, the very mark of dharma is to be upheld with reverence.'
Verse 32 (skanda.1.114.32)
sarvābhīpsitasiddhyarthaṁ matprītikaraṇāya ca mayā saṁsthāpitā dharmā dvātriṁśallokaguptaye
'For the accomplishment of every desire, and for my own delight, thirty-two dharmas have been established by me for the protection of the worlds.'
Verse 33 (skanda.1.114.33)
rakṣaṇīyā prayatnena tatsaṁnidhimupāgataiḥ sarvālaṁkārasaṁyuktaṁ sarvabhogakṛtotsavam ālokyatāmidaṁ rūpaṁ kanyāyāṁ mama kāṁtimat
'They are to be diligently guarded by those who come into its presence. Behold this radiant form, joined with every ornament, made festive with every enjoyment, in that maiden.'
Verse 34 (skanda.1.114.34)
brahmovāca iti devyā vacaḥ śrutvā śambhuḥ śoṇācaleśvaraḥ
Brahma said: Hearing this word of the Goddess, Shambhu, Lord of Shonachala,
Verse 35 (skanda.1.114.35)
tatheti varadaḥ prādādvaraṁ sarvamabhīpsitam eṣa śoṇācalaḥ śrīmāndṛśyate lokapūjitaḥ
saying 'so be it,' as boon-giver, granted every desired boon. This glorious Shonachala is seen, worshipped by the worlds,
Verse 36 (skanda.1.114.36)
sarvadā varadāgauryā sarvabhogaiśca saṁvṛtaḥ ya etacchāṁbhavaṁ rūpamaruṇādritayā sthitam
ever accompanied by boon-giving Gauri, and surrounded by every enjoyment; whoever, this form of Shambhu, established in the very form of Arunadri —
Verse 37 (skanda.1.114.37)
saṁpaśyaṁti namasyaṁti kṛtārthāḥ sarva eva te aruṇācalamāhātmyametacchraṇvaṁti ye bhuvi
— beholds and bows to it, all such become fulfilled. Whoever on this earth hears this Arunachala Mahatmya,
Verse 38 (skanda.1.114.38)
bhavaṁti satataṁ teṣāṁ samagrāḥ sarvasaṁpadaḥ śrīmattvaṁ vākpatitvaṁ ca rūpamavyāhataṁ balam
for them, constantly, every prosperity comes in full measure — glory, mastery of speech, unimpeded beauty and strength.
Verse 39 (skanda.1.114.39)
labhaṁte pāpanāśaṁ ca māhātmyasyāsya dhāraṇāt sarvatīrthābhiṣavaṇaṁ sarvayajñakriyāphalam
By holding fast to this greatness, they obtain also the destruction of sin; the fruit of bathing in every sacred ford, of every sacrificial rite —
Verse 40 (skanda.1.114.40)
sadāśivaprasādaṁ ca datte śoṇādridarśanam
— and the very grace of Sadashiva, all are granted by the mere sight of Shonadri.
Verse 41 (skanda.1.114.41)
iti kailāsaśikharātprāptā devī śivājñayā śāpamokṣagatavatī śoṇācalanirīkṣaṇāt
Thus the Goddess, who had come from the peak of Kailasa by Shiva's command, attained release from the curse through the mere sight of Shonachala.
Verse 42 (skanda.1.114.42)
sthāneṣvanyeṣu devasya vidyamāneṣu ca kṣitau divi cātyaṁtapuṇyeṣu śaṁbhuratra prasedivān
Among the other abodes of the God existing upon this earth, and even amidst the most sacred realms of heaven, it is here that Shambhu has become most gracious.
Verse 43 (skanda.1.114.43)
ayaṁ sadāśivaḥ sākṣādaruṇācalarūpataḥ dṛśyate paramaṁ tejaḥ sargasthityaṁtakāraṇam
This Sadashiva is seen, directly in the very form of Arunachala, as the supreme radiance, the very cause of creation, preservation, and dissolution.
Verse 44 (skanda.1.114.44)
etattu taijasaṁ ligaṁ sarvadevanamaskṛtam dṛśyate karmabhūreṣā tena dharmādhikā matā
This linga of light, bowed to by every god, is seen here — for this reason, this land of action is held to be supreme in dharma.
Verse 45 (skanda.1.114.45)
aruṇācalanāthasya tejasā dhūtakalmaṣāḥ bhaktimaṁto narā loke sukhamāpsyaṁti sarvataḥ
Men of devotion, their impurities washed away by the radiance of the Lord of Arunachala, shall obtain happiness everywhere in this world.
Verse 46 (skanda.1.114.46)
pradakṣiṇairnamaskāraistapobhirniyamairapi ye'rcayaṁtyaruṇādrīśaṁ teṣāṁ śaṁbhurvaśaṁgataḥ
Those who worship the Lord of the red mountain with circumambulation, prostration, austerities, and observances too — Shambhu comes under their very sway.
Verse 47 (skanda.1.114.47)
na tathā tapasā yogairdānaiḥ prīṇāti śaṁkaraḥ yathā sakṛdapi prāptādaruṇācaladarśanāt
Shankara is not pleased so much by austerity, by yoga, or by gifts, as he is by even a single sight of Arunachala, however it may be obtained.
Verse 48 (skanda.1.114.48)
svayaṁbhuvaḥ sadā vedāḥ setihāsā divi sthitāḥ parito girirūpāste stuvaṁtyaruṇaparvatam
The self-born Vedas, together with the Itihasas, dwell forever in heaven; taking the very form of mountains all around, they praise the mountain Aruna.
Verse 49 (skanda.1.114.49)
etasya vaibhavaṁ sarvaṁ na mayā na ca śārṅgiṇā vacasā śakyate vaktuṁ varṣakoṭiśatairapi
This mountain's entire majesty neither I nor Vishnu, bearer of the bow Sharnga, could tell in words, even across hundreds of millions of years.
Verse 50 (skanda.1.114.50)
devāśca harimukhyāste kalpakādyāḥ suradrumāḥ pracchannarūpāḥ sevaṁte sarvadaivāruṇācalam
The gods, headed by Hari, and the celestial trees headed by the wish-fulfilling one too, in hidden forms, ever serve Arunachala always.
Verse 51 (skanda.1.114.51)
na tasya kalidoṣaḥ syānnādhivyādhivijṛṁbhaṇā yatra saṁpūjyate liṁgamaruṇācalasaṁjñitam
There is no fault of the Kali age there, nor any outbreak of mental or bodily affliction, wherever the linga called Arunachala is worshipped.
Verse 52 (skanda.1.114.52)
ityetatkathitaṁ sarvaṁ tava śaṁbhupadāśrayam caritaṁ hyaruṇasyāsya kalpapuṇyadurāsadam
Thus has all this been told to you — this deed of Aruna, itself the very refuge at Shambhu's feet, is hard to attain even by the merit of an entire cosmic age.
Verse 53 (skanda.1.114.53)
sūta uvāca iti vidhimukhaniḥsṛtāmudārāmaruṇagirīśakathāsudhāpagāṁ hi śrutipuṭayugalātpibanmanojñāṁ sanakamunistapasāṁ phalaṁ sa lebhe
Suta said: Thus, drinking in through the twin vessels of his ears this generous river of nectar — the tale of the Lord of the mountain Aruna, flowing forth from the mouth of Vidhi, so delightful — sage Sanaka obtained the very fruit of his own austerities.
