The Catalogue of Shaiva Kshetras
Verse 1 (skanda.1.116.1)
नंदिकेश्वर उवाच । स्थानं त्वया मुने पृष्टमस्ति माहेश्वराग्रणि । चराचराणां सर्वेषां भूतानामपि शर्मणे
naṁdikeśvara uvāca sthānaṁ tvayā mune pṛṣṭamasti māheśvarāgraṇi carācarāṇāṁ sarveṣāṁ bhūtānāmapi śarmaṇe
Nandikeshvara said: The place you have asked of, O sage, is foremost among all places of Maheshvara, for the welfare of every moving and unmoving creature.
Verse 2 (skanda.1.116.2)
प्रकल्पितं हि देवेन तत्तत्कर्मानुगुण्यतः । शरीरभाजां जननं तासुतास्वपि योनिषु
prakalpitaṁ hi devena tattatkarmānuguṇyataḥ śarīrabhājāṁ jananaṁ tāsutāsvapi yoniṣu
By the God himself, according to each one's deeds, has the birth of embodied beings in their various wombs been ordained.
Verse 3 (skanda.1.116.3)
त्वया शुश्रुषितं तेषां हिताय महते ह्यलम् । अन्यथा संसृतेर्हानिः कल्पकोटिशतैर्नहि
tvayā śuśruṣitaṁ teṣāṁ hitāya mahate hyalam anyathā saṁsṛterhāniḥ kalpakoṭiśatairnahi
You have well listened to this for their great benefit; otherwise, even across hundreds of millions of cosmic ages, there is no release from the round of rebirth.
Verse 4 (skanda.1.116.4)
स्वल्पैर्हि कर्मभिर्ज्ञानैरपि प्राप्ता पुनःपुनः । घटीयंत्रनयाज्जन्ममरणे नैव शाम्यतः
svalpairhi karmabhirjñānairapi prāptā punaḥpunaḥ ghaṭīyaṁtranayājjanmamaraṇe naiva śāmyataḥ
Attained again and again even through slight deeds and knowledge, like the turning of a water-wheel, birth and death never come to rest.
Verse 5 (skanda.1.116.5)
कथं नु विरतो देही गर्भमोकसमागमात् । विश्रांतये प्रकल्पेत विशुद्धज्ञानतो विना
kathaṁ nu virato dehī garbhamokasamāgamāt viśrāṁtaye prakalpeta viśuddhajñānato vinā
How indeed could an embodied being, ceasing from the union of womb and household, ever attain to rest, without pure knowledge?
Verse 6 (skanda.1.116.6)
प्रदेशाः कथिताः पूर्वं प्रसंगवशतो मया । ऋषिभेदादिकं तेषु निवासः कृत्तिवाससः
pradeśāḥ kathitāḥ pūrvaṁ prasaṁgavaśato mayā ṛṣibhedādikaṁ teṣu nivāsaḥ kṛttivāsasaḥ
Incidentally I have already told of the regions, and among them the various sages and the dwelling-place of Krittivasa too.
Verse 7 (skanda.1.116.7)
केचित्तीरेषु गंगायाः केचित्सारस्वते तटे । कालिंदीतीरयोरन्ये कतिचिच्छोणरोधसि
kecittīreṣu gaṁgāyāḥ kecitsārasvate taṭe kāliṁdītīrayoranye katicicchoṇarodhasi
Some are on the banks of the Ganga, some on the shore of the Sarasvati, others on both banks of the Kalindi, a few on the shore of the Shona.
Verse 8 (skanda.1.116.8)
अपरे नर्मदातीरे परे गोदावरीतटे । कतिचिद्गोमतीतीरेष्वन्ये हैमवतीतटे
apare narmadātīre pare godāvarītaṭe katicidgomatītīreṣvanye haimavatītaṭe
Others on the bank of the Narmada, others on the bank of the Godavari, some on the banks of the Gomati, others on the bank of the Haimavati.
Verse 9 (skanda.1.116.9)
समुद्रपार्श्वेष्वितरं द्वीपेष्वन्ये सरस्वताम् । मुखेषु केचित्सिंधूनां संभेदेष्वपि केचन
samudrapārśveṣvitaraṁ dvīpeṣvanye sarasvatām mukheṣu kecitsiṁdhūnāṁ saṁbhedeṣvapi kecana
Others on sea-shores, others on islands, some at the mouths of the Sarasvati, some too at the confluences of rivers.
Verse 10 (skanda.1.116.10)
कृष्णवेणीतटे केचित्तुंगभद्रांतिके परे । उपवेण्यां कतिपये परे शक्त्यापगांतिके
kṛṣṇaveṇītaṭe kecittuṁgabhadrāṁtike pare upaveṇyāṁ katipaye pare śaktyāpagāṁtike
Some on the bank of the Krishnaveni, others near the Tungabhadra, some at the Upaveni, others near the river Shakti.
Verse 11 (skanda.1.116.11)
कावेरीतीर इतरे केचिद्वेगवतीतटे । अन्ये तु ताम्रपर्ण्याश्च कतिचिन्मुरलातटे
kāverītīra itare kecidvegavatītaṭe anye tu tāmraparṇyāśca katicinmuralātaṭe
Others on the bank of the Kaveri, some on the bank of the Vegavati, others on the Tamraparni, some on the bank of the Murala.
Verse 12 (skanda.1.116.12)
केचिदैरावतीतीरे त्वितरे यातुकांक्षिके
kecidairāvatītīre tvitare yātukāṁkṣike
Some on the bank of the Airavati, others on the bank of the Yatukankshika.
Verse 13 (skanda.1.116.13)
कन्यातटेषु कतिचित्कतिचित्कुमारीतीरे परे च तमसावरुणांतिकेन्ये । मंदाकिनीसविधयोरितरे परेऽपि शिप्रातटे परिसरेषु परे सरय्वाः
kanyātaṭeṣu katicitkaticitkumārītīre pare ca tamasāvaruṇāṁtikenye maṁdākinīsavidhayoritare pare'pi śiprātaṭe parisareṣu pare sarayvāḥ
Some on the shores of the Kanya, some on the bank of the Kumari, others near the Tamasa and the Aruna; some near the Mandakini, others on the bank of the Shipra, some on the banks of the Sarayu.
Verse 14 (skanda.1.116.14)
विपाशाभ्याश इतरे शतद्रुतितटे परे । चर्मण्वत्युपकंठेऽन्ये केचिद्भीमरथीतटे
vipāśābhyāśa itare śatadrutitaṭe pare carmaṇvatyupakaṁṭhe'nye kecidbhīmarathītaṭe
Others near the Vipasha, others on the bank of the Shatadru, some near the Charmanvati, others on the bank of the Bhimarathi.
Verse 15 (skanda.1.116.15)
केचिद्बिंदुसरोभ्यर्णे परे पंपासरस्तटे । अभ्यर्णकेपि भैरव्याः कतिचित्कौशिकीतटे
kecidbiṁdusarobhyarṇe pare paṁpāsarastaṭe abhyarṇakepi bhairavyāḥ katicitkauśikītaṭe
Some near lake Bindu, others on the shore of lake Pampa, some near the Bhairavi, others on the bank of the Kaushiki.
Verse 16 (skanda.1.116.16)
अपरे मालिनीतीरे परे गंधवतीतटे । कतिचिन्मानसोपांते केचिदच्छोदरोधसि
apare mālinītīre pare gaṁdhavatītaṭe katicinmānasopāṁte kecidacchodarodhasi
Others on the bank of the Malini, others on the bank of the Gandhavati, some near lake Manasa, some on the shore of lake Achchhoda.
Verse 17 (skanda.1.116.17)
इंद्रद्युम्नसरस्यन्य एके तु मणिकर्णिके । परे तु वरदातीरे ताप्यां कतिचनापरे । पातालगंगासविधे शरावत्यंतिके परे
iṁdradyumnasarasyanya eke tu maṇikarṇike pare tu varadātīre tāpyāṁ katicanāpare pātālagaṁgāsavidhe śarāvatyaṁtike pare
Some at lake Indradyumna, others at Manikarnika, some on the bank of the Varada, some at the Tapi; some near the subterranean Ganga, others near the Sharavati.
Verse 18 (skanda.1.116.18)
लोहित्याकूलयोः केचित्कतिचित्कालमातटे । वितस्तोपांतिके त्वन्ये चंद्रभागांतिके परे
lohityākūlayoḥ kecitkaticitkālamātaṭe vitastopāṁtike tvanye caṁdrabhāgāṁtike pare
Some on the shores of the Lohitya, some on the bank of the Kalama, others near the Vitasta, others near the Chandrabhaga.
Verse 19 (skanda.1.116.19)
सुरलोपांतिके केचित्पयोष्णीतीरयोः परे । केचिन्मधुमतीतीरे केचनानु पिनाकिनीम्
suralopāṁtike kecitpayoṣṇītīrayoḥ pare kecinmadhumatītīre kecanānu pinākinīm
Some near the Suralo, others on the banks of the Payoshni, some on the bank of the Madhumati, some along the Pinakini.
Verse 20 (skanda.1.116.20)
उक्तं वाराणसीक्षेत्रं क्रोशपंचकपावनम् । देवस्तत्राविमुक्ताख्यो विशालाक्ष्या समर्चितः
uktaṁ vārāṇasīkṣetraṁ krośapaṁcakapāvanam devastatrāvimuktākhyo viśālākṣyā samarcitaḥ
The field of Varanasi has been declared, sacred for five kroshas around; there dwells the God named Avimukta, worshipped by Vishalakshi.
Verse 21 (skanda.1.116.21)
कपालमोचनं यत्र यत्रास्ते कालभैरवः । मृतानां यत्र रुद्रत्वं काशीं विद्धि हि तां मुने
kapālamocanaṁ yatra yatrāste kālabhairavaḥ mṛtānāṁ yatra rudratvaṁ kāśīṁ viddhi hi tāṁ mune
Where the ford of skull-release is, where Kala-Bhairava dwells, where the dead attain the very state of Rudra — know that, O sage, to be Kashi.
Verse 22 (skanda.1.116.22)
गयाप्रयागावपि ते कथितौ सर्वसिद्धिदौ । यत्र पिंडप्रदानेन तुष्यंति पितरः किल
gayāprayāgāvapi te kathitau sarvasiddhidau yatra piṁḍapradānena tuṣyaṁti pitaraḥ kila
Gaya and Prayaga too have been told to you, granters of every accomplishment, where the ancestors are satisfied by the offering of the funeral-cakes.
Verse 23 (skanda.1.116.23)
आकर्णितं च केदारं यस्मिन्महिषरूपधृक् । देवोपि च हतो देव्या सर्वश्रेयस्करो नृणाम्
ākarṇitaṁ ca kedāraṁ yasminmahiṣarūpadhṛk devopi ca hato devyā sarvaśreyaskaro nṛṇām
You have also heard of Kedara, where even a god who took the form of a buffalo was slain by the Goddess — for the entire good of mankind.
Verse 24 (skanda.1.116.24)
सर्वसिद्धिकरं पुंसां क्षेत्रं बदरिकाश्रमम् । यत्रास्ते त्र्यंबको देव्या नरनारायणार्चितः
sarvasiddhikaraṁ puṁsāṁ kṣetraṁ badarikāśramam yatrāste tryaṁbako devyā naranārāyaṇārcitaḥ
The field of Badarikashrama, granter of every accomplishment to men, where Tryambaka, together with the Goddess, dwells, worshipped by Nara and Narayana.
Verse 25 (skanda.1.116.25)
श्रुतं हि नैमिषं क्षेत्रं त्वया यत्र महेश्वरः । देवदेवाभिधः पुण्यो देवी सारंगधारिणी
śrutaṁ hi naimiṣaṁ kṣetraṁ tvayā yatra maheśvaraḥ devadevābhidhaḥ puṇyo devī sāraṁgadhāriṇī
You have heard also of the field of Naimisha, where dwells the sacred Maheshvara named Devadeva, and the goddess who bears the bow.
Verse 26 (skanda.1.116.26)
अमरेशमिति स्थानं प्रोक्तं सर्वार्थसाधकम् । ॐकारनामा तत्रेशश्चंडिकाख्या महेश्वरी
amareśamiti sthānaṁ proktaṁ sarvārthasādhakam oṁkāranāmā tatreśaścaṁḍikākhyā maheśvarī
The place named Amaresha too has been told, accomplisher of every purpose; there the Lord is named Omkara, and the great goddess is named Chandika.
Verse 27 (skanda.1.116.27)
पुष्कराख्यं महास्थानं श्रुतं ते कथितं मया । यत्र देवो रुजोगंधिः पुरुहूता महेश्वरी
puṣkarākhyaṁ mahāsthānaṁ śrutaṁ te kathitaṁ mayā yatra devo rujogaṁdhiḥ puruhūtā maheśvarī
The great place named Pushkara too you have heard, told by me; where the god is named Rujogandhi, and the great goddess Puruhuta.
Verse 28 (skanda.1.116.28)
आषाढीनाम ते स्थानं पावनं कथितं मया । आषाढेशो हरस्तत्र रतीशा परमेश्वरी
āṣāḍhīnāma te sthānaṁ pāvanaṁ kathitaṁ mayā āṣāḍheśo harastatra ratīśā parameśvarī
The sacred place named Ashadhi too I have told you; there Hara is named Ashadhesha, and the supreme goddess Ratisha.
Verse 29 (skanda.1.116.29)
दंडिमुंडी समाख्यं च स्थानं ते कथितं मया । यत्र मुंडी महादेवो दंडिका परमेश्वरी
daṁḍimuṁḍī samākhyaṁ ca sthānaṁ te kathitaṁ mayā yatra muṁḍī mahādevo daṁḍikā parameśvarī
The place named Dandimundi too I have told you; where Mahadeva is named Mundi, and the supreme goddess Dandika.
Verse 30 (skanda.1.116.30)
लाकुलंनाम ते स्थानं संशुद्धं कथितं मया । लाकुलीशो हरो यस्मिन्ननंगा सर्वमंगला
lākulaṁnāma te sthānaṁ saṁśuddhaṁ kathitaṁ mayā lākulīśo haro yasminnanaṁgā sarvamaṁgalā
The pure place named Lakula too I have told; where Hara is named Lakulisha, and the all-auspicious goddess Ananga.
Verse 31 (skanda.1.116.31)
भारभूतिरिति स्थानं भवतोऽभिहितं मया । यत्र भाराभिधः शंभुर्भूत्याख्या भूधरात्मजा
bhārabhūtiriti sthānaṁ bhavato'bhihitaṁ mayā yatra bhārābhidhaḥ śaṁbhurbhūtyākhyā bhūdharātmajā
The place named Bharabhuti too has been told to you; where Shambhu is named Bhara, and the mountain's daughter is named Bhuti.
Verse 32 (skanda.1.116.32)
अरालकेश्वरं नाम स्थानं ते कथितं मया । यत्र सूक्ष्माभिधः शूली सूक्ष्माख्या शैलनंदिनी
arālakeśvaraṁ nāma sthānaṁ te kathitaṁ mayā yatra sūkṣmābhidhaḥ śūlī sūkṣmākhyā śailanaṁdinī
The place named Aralakeshvara too has been told to you; where the trident-bearer is named Sukshma, and the mountain's daughter is named Sukshma.
Verse 33 (skanda.1.116.33)
गयानाम महाक्षेत्रं तव प्रस्तावितं मया । मंगलाख्या शिवा यत्र शंकरः प्रपितामहः
gayānāma mahākṣetraṁ tava prastāvitaṁ mayā maṁgalākhyā śivā yatra śaṁkaraḥ prapitāmahaḥ
The great field named Gaya too has been recounted to you; where the goddess is named Mangala, and Shankara is the very great-grandfather.
Verse 34 (skanda.1.116.34)
कुरुक्षेत्रमिति स्थानं भवते विनिवेदितम् । यत्र स्थाणुप्रिया देवी देवः स्थाणुसमाह्वयः
kurukṣetramiti sthānaṁ bhavate viniveditam yatra sthāṇupriyā devī devaḥ sthāṇusamāhvayaḥ
The place named Kurukshetra too has been told to you; where the goddess is called beloved of Sthanu, and the god is named Sthanu.
Verse 35 (skanda.1.116.35)
उक्तं कनखलंनाम मया ते स्थानमुत्तमम् । उग्रो यत्र पुरारातिरुग्रा गिरिवरात्मजा
uktaṁ kanakhalaṁnāma mayā te sthānamuttamam ugro yatra purārātirugrā girivarātmajā
The excellent place named Kanakhala too I have told; where the foe of the triple city is named Ugra, and the mountain-king's daughter Ugra.
Verse 36 (skanda.1.116.36)
तालकाख्यं महाक्षेत्रं मार्कंडेय मयोदितम् । देवी स्वायंभुवी यत्र स्वयंभूः परमेश्वरः
tālakākhyaṁ mahākṣetraṁ mārkaṁḍeya mayoditam devī svāyaṁbhuvī yatra svayaṁbhūḥ parameśvaraḥ
The great field named Talaka too, O Markandeya, I have told; where the goddess is named Svayambhuvi, and the supreme lord Svayambhu.
Verse 37 (skanda.1.116.37)
अट्टहासमिति प्रोक्तं महास्थानं मया तव । यत्रार्कः पूजयित्वेशमासीत्पूर्णमनोरथः
aṭṭahāsamiti proktaṁ mahāsthānaṁ mayā tava yatrārkaḥ pūjayitveśamāsītpūrṇamanorathaḥ
The great place named Attahasa too has been told to you; where the sun, worshipping the Lord, had his own heart's desire fulfilled.
Verse 38 (skanda.1.116.38)
कृत्तिवासाभिधं क्षेत्रमुक्तं ते वेदवित्तम । यः कैलासादपि श्लाघ्यो निवासः कृत्तिवाससः
kṛttivāsābhidhaṁ kṣetramuktaṁ te vedavittama yaḥ kailāsādapi ślāghyo nivāsaḥ kṛttivāsasaḥ
O foremost of the Vedas' knowers, the field named Krittivasa too has been told; the dwelling of Krittivasa, praised even above Kailasa itself.
Verse 39 (skanda.1.116.39)
भ्रमरांबिकया देव्या महेशो मल्लिकार्जुनः । श्रीशैले सृष्टिसिद्धयर्थं पूजितः परमेष्ठिना
bhramarāṁbikayā devyā maheśo mallikārjunaḥ śrīśaile sṛṣṭisiddhayarthaṁ pūjitaḥ parameṣṭhinā
Mahesha Mallikarjuna, together with the goddess Bhramaramba, at Shrishaila, is worshipped by Brahma for the accomplishment of creation.
Verse 40 (skanda.1.116.40)
सुवर्णमुखरीतीरे कालहस्तीति शंकरः । व्यासेनाराधितो भृंगमुखरालकयांबया
suvarṇamukharītīre kālahastīti śaṁkaraḥ vyāsenārādhito bhṛṁgamukharālakayāṁbayā
On the bank of the Suvarnamukhari, Shankara named Kalahasti is worshipped by Vyasa, and by the goddess named Bhringa-Mukhara-Alaka.
Verse 41 (skanda.1.116.41)
कांच्यामेकाम्रमूलस्थः कामाक्ष्या कामशासनः । तपस्यंत्याभिसंश्लिष्टो वलयेनांकितोऽभवत्
kāṁcyāmekāmramūlasthaḥ kāmākṣyā kāmaśāsanaḥ tapasyaṁtyābhisaṁśliṣṭo valayenāṁkito'bhavat
At Kanchi, established at the root of the mango tree, Shiva, subduer of desire, embraced by Kamakshi in her austerity, became marked with the imprint of her bracelet.
Verse 42 (skanda.1.116.42)
अस्ति व्याघ्रपुरंनाम तिल्लिकाननमध्यगम् । यत्र नृत्यंतमीशानं पर्युपास्ते पतंजलिः
asti vyāghrapuraṁnāma tillikānanamadhyagam yatra nṛtyaṁtamīśānaṁ paryupāste pataṁjaliḥ
There is a place named Vyaghrapura, situated in the midst of the Tillai forest; where Patanjali worships Ishana as he dances.
Verse 43 (skanda.1.116.43)
श्वेतारण्यमिति स्थानमुक्तं तव मया पुरा । भग्नमैरावतो दंतं भेजे यत्र शिवार्चनात्
śvetāraṇyamiti sthānamuktaṁ tava mayā purā bhagnamairāvato daṁtaṁ bheje yatra śivārcanāt
The place named Shvetaranya too I have already told you; where Airavata, through the worship of Shiva, regained his broken tusk.
Verse 44 (skanda.1.116.44)
सेतुबंधमिति स्थानमवोचं तत्र राघवः । रामनाथाख्यया देवमंहोघ्नं प्रत्यतिष्ठिपत्
setubaṁdhamiti sthānamavocaṁ tatra rāghavaḥ rāmanāthākhyayā devamaṁhoghnaṁ pratyatiṣṭhipat
The place named Setubandha too I have told; where Raghava established that sin-destroying god under the name Ramanatha.
Verse 45 (skanda.1.116.45)
गतप्रत्याह्वय स्थानं विद्यते वृषभध्वजः । यत्र जंबूतरोर्मूले जगद्रक्षार्थमाश्रितः
gatapratyāhvaya sthānaṁ vidyate vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ yatra jaṁbūtarormūle jagadrakṣārthamāśritaḥ
In the place named Gatapratyahvaya dwells the bull-bannered one; where, at the root of the jambu tree, he has taken refuge for the protection of the world.
Verse 46 (skanda.1.116.46)
मणिमुक्तानदीमन्वक्क्षेत्रे वृद्धाचलाह्वये । नित्यं सन्निहितो देव इत्याकर्णित एव ते
maṇimuktānadīmanvakkṣetre vṛddhācalāhvaye nityaṁ sannihito deva ityākarṇita eva te
Near the river Manimukta, in the field named Vriddhachala, the God ever remains present — this you have indeed already heard.
Verse 47 (skanda.1.116.47)
श्रीमन्मध्यार्जुनंनाम श्रुतं स्थानमनुत्तमम् । यस्मिन्वरप्रदो नित्यं गौरीसहचरो हरः
śrīmanmadhyārjunaṁnāma śrutaṁ sthānamanuttamam yasminvaraprado nityaṁ gaurīsahacaro haraḥ
The excellent place named Shrimanmadhyarjuna too you have heard; where Hara, companion of Gauri, ever grants boons.
Verse 48 (skanda.1.116.48)
आस्थितं सोमनाथेन सोमतीर्थं त्वया श्रुतम् । यत्र त्यक्तवतां देहं न भूयो भवबंधनम्
āsthitaṁ somanāthena somatīrthaṁ tvayā śrutam yatra tyaktavatāṁ dehaṁ na bhūyo bhavabaṁdhanam
The Soma-tirtha established by Somanatha too you have heard; where those who give up the body are freed from the bondage of the world again.
Verse 49 (skanda.1.116.49)
आकर्णितं हि भवता क्षेत्रं सिद्धवटाह्वयम् । यत्र सिद्धाः समर्चंति ज्योतिर्लिंगमनुत्तमम्
ākarṇitaṁ hi bhavatā kṣetraṁ siddhavaṭāhvayam yatra siddhāḥ samarcaṁti jyotirliṁgamanuttamam
The field named Siddhavata too you have heard, where the siddhas fully worship that matchless linga of light.
Verse 50 (skanda.1.116.50)
अश्रावि खलु ते क्षेत्रं कमलालयसंज्ञकम् । वल्मीकेशार्चनाल्लेभे यत्र श्रीर्जीविता हरेः
aśrāvi khalu te kṣetraṁ kamalālayasaṁjñakam valmīkeśārcanāllebhe yatra śrīrjīvitā hareḥ
The field named Kamalalaya too you have heard, where, through the worship of Valmikesha, Hari's own Shri was restored to life.
Verse 51 (skanda.1.116.51)
श्रुतवानसि कंकाद्रिं यत्र संनिहितो हरः । इदानीमप्युपासाते मोक्षाय ब्रह्मकेशवौ
śrutavānasi kaṁkādriṁ yatra saṁnihito haraḥ idānīmapyupāsāte mokṣāya brahmakeśavau
Of Kankadri too you have heard, where Hara ever remains present; even now Brahma and Keshava worship him there for the sake of liberation.
Verse 52 (skanda.1.116.52)
श्रीमद्द्रोणपुरं वेत्सि यस्मिन्कलियुगक्षये । नौकामारूढवानब्धौ क्षुभिते पार्वतीपतिः
śrīmaddroṇapuraṁ vetsi yasminkaliyugakṣaye naukāmārūḍhavānabdhau kṣubhite pārvatīpatiḥ
You know too the glorious Dronapura, where, at the end of the Kali age, when the ocean grew turbulent, the lord of Parvati boarded a boat.
Verse 53 (skanda.1.116.53)
श्रुतं ब्रह्मपुरंनाम क्षेत्रं यत्रेंद्रजित्पुरा । आर्यपुष्करिणीतीरे स्थापयामास धूर्जटिम्
śrutaṁ brahmapuraṁnāma kṣetraṁ yatreṁdrajitpurā āryapuṣkariṇītīre sthāpayāmāsa dhūrjaṭim
The field named Brahmapura too you have heard, where of old Indrajit established Dhurjati on the bank of the Arya-Pushkarini.
Verse 54 (skanda.1.116.54)
श्रीकोटिकाख्यं ज्ञानाभिक्षेत्रं यत्रेंदुशेखरः । समाराधयतां पुंसां पापकोटीर्व्यपोहति
śrīkoṭikākhyaṁ jñānābhikṣetraṁ yatreṁduśekharaḥ samārādhayatāṁ puṁsāṁ pāpakoṭīrvyapohati
There is too the field of knowledge named Shrikotika, where the moon-crested one drives away the countless sins of the men who worship him.
Verse 55 (skanda.1.116.55)
आकर्णितं च गोकर्णं शिवं यत्संनिधानतः । आरिराधयिषुः स्वर्गं जामदग्न्यो न कांक्षति
ākarṇitaṁ ca gokarṇaṁ śivaṁ yatsaṁnidhānataḥ ārirādhayiṣuḥ svargaṁ jāmadagnyo na kāṁkṣati
Of Gokarna too you have heard, where, through Shiva's very presence, even Jamadagni's descendant, though wishing to attain heaven, ceases to desire it.
Verse 56 (skanda.1.116.56)
त्रिपुरांतकमुक्तं ते क्षेत्रं यत्र त्रियंबकः । निराकरोति निरयाद्भयं दृष्टवतां नृणाम्
tripurāṁtakamuktaṁ te kṣetraṁ yatra triyaṁbakaḥ nirākaroti nirayādbhayaṁ dṛṣṭavatāṁ nṛṇām
The field named Tripurantaka too has been told to you, where Tryambaka drives away the fear of hell from the men who behold him.
Verse 57 (skanda.1.116.57)
उक्तं कालांजनं क्षेत्रं यद्वासी कालकंधरः । निर्वापयति भक्तानां घोरसंसारसंज्वरम्
uktaṁ kālāṁjanaṁ kṣetraṁ yadvāsī kālakaṁdharaḥ nirvāpayati bhaktānāṁ ghorasaṁsārasaṁjvaram
The field of Kalanjana too has been told, whose resident Kalakandhara quells the terrible fever of worldly existence for his devotees.
Verse 58 (skanda.1.116.58)
प्रियालवणमाख्यातं क्षेत्रं यत्रांबिकापतिः । पयोर्थिने पयःसिंधुं विततारोपमन्यवे
priyālavaṇamākhyātaṁ kṣetraṁ yatrāṁbikāpatiḥ payorthine payaḥsiṁdhuṁ vitatāropamanyave
The field named Priyalavana too has been recounted, where the lord of Ambika made an ocean of milk swell forth for Upamanyu, who longed for milk.
Verse 59 (skanda.1.116.59)
क्षेत्रं प्रभासमुक्तं ते यत्र खंडेंदुशेखरः । पूजितः शौरिसीरिभ्यां दत्तवानक्षयं फलम्
kṣetraṁ prabhāsamuktaṁ te yatra khaṁḍeṁduśekharaḥ pūjitaḥ śaurisīribhyāṁ dattavānakṣayaṁ phalam
The field named Prabhasa too has been told to you, where, worshipping the half-moon-crested one, Shauri and Siri obtained an imperishable fruit.
Verse 60 (skanda.1.116.60)
वेदारण्यं विजानीषे यस्मिन्प्रमथनायकः । अभ्यर्थितोऽभून्मोक्षार्थं दक्षेण प्राक्कृतागसा
vedāraṇyaṁ vijānīṣe yasminpramathanāyakaḥ abhyarthito'bhūnmokṣārthaṁ dakṣeṇa prākkṛtāgasā
You know too Vedaranya, where Daksha, having earlier given offence, entreated the lord of the Pramathas for the sake of liberation.
Verse 61 (skanda.1.116.61)
हेमकूटं त्वमश्रौषीः स्थानं विषमचक्षुषः । पुंसां तपस्यतां यत्र पुनर्जननतो न भीः
hemakūṭaṁ tvamaśrauṣīḥ sthānaṁ viṣamacakṣuṣaḥ puṁsāṁ tapasyatāṁ yatra punarjananato na bhīḥ
Hemakuta too you have heard, the place of the god of the uneven eye, where men who perform austerity have no fear of rebirth again.
Verse 62 (skanda.1.116.62)
क्षेत्रं वेणुवनंनाम विद्यते पापनाशनम् । यत्र वंशलतागर्भाज्जातो मुक्तामणिः शिवा
kṣetraṁ veṇuvanaṁnāma vidyate pāpanāśanam yatra vaṁśalatāgarbhājjāto muktāmaṇiḥ śivā
There exists too the sin-destroying field named Venuvana, where the goddess Shiva, like a pearl, was born from the very womb of a bamboo creeper.
Verse 63 (skanda.1.116.63)
जालंधरमिति स्थानमंधकारेस्त्वया श्रुतम् । लेभे गणपतां तत्र तपस्याभिर्जलंधरः
jālaṁdharamiti sthānamaṁdhakārestvayā śrutam lebhe gaṇapatāṁ tatra tapasyābhirjalaṁdharaḥ
The place named Jalandhara, of the slayer of Andhaka, too you have heard, where Jalandhara, through austerity, attained the very rank of a gana.
Verse 64 (skanda.1.116.64)
ज्वालामुखमिति स्थानमज्ञासीः कथितं मया । यत्र ज्वालामुखी देवी कालरुद्रमपूजयत्
jvālāmukhamiti sthānamajñāsīḥ kathitaṁ mayā yatra jvālāmukhī devī kālarudramapūjayat
The place named Jvalamukha too I have told you, where the goddess Jvalamukhi worshipped Kala-Rudra.
Verse 65 (skanda.1.116.65)
अस्ति भद्रवटोनाम क्षेत्रमुक्तं श्रुतं त्वया । त्र्यंबकं यत्र हेरंबः संपदे पर्यपूजयत्
asti bhadravaṭonāma kṣetramuktaṁ śrutaṁ tvayā tryaṁbakaṁ yatra heraṁbaḥ saṁpade paryapūjayat
There is also the field named Bhadravata, of which you have heard mention, where Heramba worshipped Tryambaka for prosperity.
Verse 66 (skanda.1.116.66)
न्यग्रोधारण्यमुक्तं ते यत्रोग्रो निर्ममे किल । उच्चंडतांडवं काल्या साकं संघर्षमेयिवान्
nyagrodhāraṇyamuktaṁ te yatrogro nirmame kila uccaṁḍatāṁḍavaṁ kālyā sākaṁ saṁgharṣameyivān
Nyagrodharanya too has been told to you, where Ugra, together with Kali, engaged in a fierce contest of the tandava dance.
Verse 67 (skanda.1.116.67)
गंधमादनसंज्ञं तत्क्षेत्रमाकर्णितं त्वया । आंजनेयेन रचितं यत्र मृत्युंजयार्चनम्
gaṁdhamādanasaṁjñaṁ tatkṣetramākarṇitaṁ tvayā āṁjaneyena racitaṁ yatra mṛtyuṁjayārcanam
That field named Gandhamadana too you have heard, where Hanuman performed the worship of the conqueror of death.
Verse 68 (skanda.1.116.68)
गोपर्वतमिति स्थानं शंभोः प्रख्यापितं मया । यत्र पाणिनिना लेभे वैयाकरणिकाग्र्यता
goparvatamiti sthānaṁ śaṁbhoḥ prakhyāpitaṁ mayā yatra pāṇininā lebhe vaiyākaraṇikāgryatā
Shambhu's place named Goparvata too I have made known, where Panini attained pre-eminence among grammarians.
Verse 69 (skanda.1.116.69)
वीरकोष्ठमिति क्षेत्रस्थानं नन्ववधारितम् । यत्र प्रचेतसा लेभे तपसा कविमुख्यता
vīrakoṣṭhamiti kṣetrasthānaṁ nanvavadhāritam yatra pracetasā lebhe tapasā kavimukhyatā
The field-place named Virakoshtha too you have well understood, where Praचेta, through austerity, attained the very foremost rank among poets.
Verse 70 (skanda.1.116.70)
महातीर्थमिति प्रोक्तं जानीषे यत्र शंभुना । अध्यापितास्सुपर्वाणः सर्वेऽपि द्रुहिणादयः
mahātīrthamiti proktaṁ jānīṣe yatra śaṁbhunā adhyāpitāssuparvāṇaḥ sarve'pi druhiṇādayaḥ
The place named Mahatirtha too you know, where all the gods, Brahma among them, were themselves instructed by Shambhu.
Verse 71 (skanda.1.116.71)
मयूरपुरमुक्तं ते क्षेत्रं माहेश्वरं मया । लेभे यत्र व्रतस्थेन ह्रादिनी वज्रपाणिना
mayūrapuramuktaṁ te kṣetraṁ māheśvaraṁ mayā lebhe yatra vratasthena hrādinī vajrapāṇinā
The field of Maheshvara named Mayurapura too I have told you, where Indra, established in his vow, obtained the very power of his thunderbolt.
Verse 72 (skanda.1.116.72)
श्रीसुंदरमिति क्षेत्रमुक्तं वेगवती तटे । कलावपि युगे यस्मिन्देवदेवेन दीप्यते
śrīsuṁdaramiti kṣetramuktaṁ vegavatī taṭe kalāvapi yuge yasmindevadevena dīpyate
On the bank of the Vegavati, the field named Shrisundara too has been told, where even in the Kali age the God of gods remains luminous.
Verse 73 (skanda.1.116.73)
कुंभकोणमिति स्थानं शंभोर्वेत्सि हि यत्र सा । गंगापि माघे सान्निध्यं कुरुते स्वाघशांतये
kuṁbhakoṇamiti sthānaṁ śaṁbhorvetsi hi yatra sā gaṁgāpi māghe sānnidhyaṁ kurute svāghaśāṁtaye
Shambhu's place named Kumbhakona too you know, where even the Ganga, in the month of Magha, comes into presence for the calming of her own sin.
Verse 74 (skanda.1.116.74)
अनुगोदावरीतीरं त्र्यंबकंनाम ते श्रुतम् । शक्तिं यत्र गुहो लेभे तारकासुरघातिनीम्
anugodāvarītīraṁ tryaṁbakaṁnāma te śrutam śaktiṁ yatra guho lebhe tārakāsuraghātinīm
On the bank of the Godavari, the place named Tryambaka too you have heard, where Guha obtained the very Shakti that would slay Tarakasura.
Verse 75 (skanda.1.116.75)
श्रीपाटलं व्याघ्रपुरमाख्यातं वेदवित्तम । त्रिशंकुना जातिशुद्ध्यै यत्र गंगाधरोर्चितः
śrīpāṭalaṁ vyāghrapuramākhyātaṁ vedavittama triśaṁkunā jātiśuddhyai yatra gaṁgādharorcitaḥ
O foremost among knowers of the Vedas, Shripatala-Vyaghrapura too has been recounted, where Trishanku worshipped the bearer of the Ganga for the purity of his own birth-status.
Verse 76 (skanda.1.116.76)
क्षेत्रं कदंबपुर्य्याख्यं भवता चावधारितम् । त्वत्कृते यत्र शूलेन कृतांतं शम्भुरक्षिणोत्
kṣetraṁ kadaṁbapuryyākhyaṁ bhavatā cāvadhāritam tvatkṛte yatra śūlena kṛtāṁtaṁ śambhurakṣiṇot
The field named Kadambapuri too you have understood, where, for your own sake, Shambhu, with his trident, protected you from Death himself.
Verse 77 (skanda.1.116.77)
अविनाशाख्यमुक्तं ते क्षेत्रं यत्र वृषध्वजः । सान्निध्यं पडिकण्ठाय विततार प्रसेदिवान्
avināśākhyamuktaṁ te kṣetraṁ yatra vṛṣadhvajaḥ sānnidhyaṁ paḍikaṇṭhāya vitatāra prasedivān
The field named Avinasha too has been told to you, where the bull-bannered one, becoming gracious, extended his very presence to Padikantha.
Verse 78 (skanda.1.116.78)
रक्तैकाननमाख्यातं मया क्षेत्रं तवानघ । मित्रावरुणयोर्यत्र रुद्रोऽजनि वरप्रदः
raktaikānanamākhyātaṁ mayā kṣetraṁ tavānagha mitrāvaruṇayoryatra rudro'jani varapradaḥ
O sinless one, the field named Raktaikanana too I have told you, where Rudra manifested as boon-giver for Mitra and Varuna.
Verse 79 (skanda.1.116.79)
श्रीहाटकेश्वरं क्षेत्रं पातालस्थं त्वया श्रुतम् । यत्र वैरोचनिर्देवं स्वपदप्राप्तयेर्चति
śrīhāṭakeśvaraṁ kṣetraṁ pātālasthaṁ tvayā śrutam yatra vairocanirdevaṁ svapadaprāptayercati
The field named Shrihatakeshvara, situated in the netherworld, too you have heard, where Vairochani worships the God for the regaining of his own rank.
Verse 80 (skanda.1.116.80)
वेत्सि शंभोः प्रियावासं कैलासं नित्यसेवकः । यत्र यक्षेश्वरस्त्र्यक्षमयर्चयति भक्तितः
vetsi śaṁbhoḥ priyāvāsaṁ kailāsaṁ nityasevakaḥ yatra yakṣeśvarastryakṣamayarcayati bhaktitaḥ
You know too Kailasa, Shambhu's own beloved dwelling, ever his servant; where the lord of the yakshas worships the three-eyed one with devotion.
Verse 81 (skanda.1.116.81)
स्थानानि खंडपरशोरित्युक्तानि मया पुरा । त्वयाप्यवधृतान्येव किं भूयः श्रोतुमिच्छसि
sthānāni khaṁḍaparaśorityuktāni mayā purā tvayāpyavadhṛtānyeva kiṁ bhūyaḥ śrotumicchasi
Thus, of old, the places of the one with the broken axe too have already been told by me, and you too have well grasped them; what more, then, do you now wish to hear?
Verse 82 (skanda.1.116.82)
इत्यूचिवानेष शिलादनंदनो मुनेर्मृकण्डोस्तनयं मुनीश्वरम् । भक्त्या नमंतं पदयोः करेण पस्पर्श मौलौ करुणारसार्द्रः
ityūcivāneṣa śilādanaṁdano munermṛkaṇḍostanayaṁ munīśvaram bhaktyā namaṁtaṁ padayoḥ kareṇa pasparśa maulau karuṇārasārdraḥ
Having spoken thus, that son of Shilada, his heart moist with the very essence of compassion, touched with his hand the head of that lord of sages, the son of the sage Mrikandu, as he bowed with devotion at his feet.
