Verse 1 (skanda.1.130.1)

brahmovāca devadeva tavaiśvaryaṁ kena śakyeta veditum vinā bhāyaikyasulabhaṁ bhavadīyamanugraham

Brahma said: 'O God of gods, who is capable of knowing your majesty, without your grace, which alone is made easy of attainment by the oneness of devotion?'

Verse 2 (skanda.1.130.2)

'Words have no author capable of expressing it — your majesty is beyond all diminishing. It cannot truly be praised; all that beings can do is bow to you from afar.'

Verse 3 (skanda.1.130.3)

ko viṣṇuḥ ko'hamete vā dikpālā vāsavādayaḥ tvameva deva karttāsi jagatsṛjanarakṣayoḥ

'What is Vishnu, what am I, what are these guardians of the directions headed by Vasava? You alone, O God, are the true doer in the creation and preservation of the world.'

Verse 4 (skanda.1.130.4)

patistvaṁ pārvatīnātha paśavo vayamapyamī baddhaṁ pāśena moktuṁ vā tvamevāsmānpragalbhase

'You are the Lord, O husband of Parvati, and we too are but creatures bound by the bonds of this world. It is you alone who has the power to bind us fast or set us free.'

Verse 5 (skanda.1.130.5)

ṣaḍviṁśattattvarūpastvamabhitaścābhivarttase kovidaḥ ko vinirṇetuṁ tava yāthātmyamīśvaraḥ

'You take the form of all twenty-six tattvas, and pervade them entirely, on every side. What sage, O Lord, is truly capable of determining your real nature?'

Verse 6 (skanda.1.130.6)

kirātaḥ kila devastvaṁ sārameyaiḥ kilāgamaiḥ ṣaḍvargahiṁsrānsaṁhartuṁ karoṣyākheṭakautukam

'You, O God, become a hunter, with the very Vedas as your hunting hounds, in order to destroy those savage six enemies of the soul — as though it were mere sport of the chase.'

Verse 7 (skanda.1.130.7)

deva dakṣādhvare pūrvaṁ varibhadrastvadājñayā kāṁkāṁ śikṣāmakārṣīnna iti kāpi viḍambanā

'O God, of old, at Daksha's sacrifice, did not Virabhadra, by your command, deal out a lesson that was itself a fitting mockery?'

Verse 8 (skanda.1.130.8)

tava kālāgnirūpasya sarvabrahmāṁḍadāhinaḥ poṣaṇātpuṣpacāpasya prāyo jihveti śemuṣī

'You, whose true form is the fire of cosmic dissolution consuming every universe, yet spared and nurtured Kama, the flower-bowed god — so it is said that even your fire has some taste for tenderness.'

Verse 9 (skanda.1.130.9)

kṛtāparādhaḥ śūlena tvayā dīrṇo jalaṁdharaḥ antakoṁdhakadaityaśca prativīraśca ko'sti te

'Jalandhara, having offended, was torn apart by your trident; likewise Andhaka, terror even of Death himself, perished by you alone — what rival hero indeed remains to you?'

Verse 10 (skanda.1.130.10)

adhārayiṣyatkaṇṭhena kālakūṭaṁ na cedbhavān kathaṁ ca dhārayiṣyāmo vayaṁ sarve'pi jīvitam

'If you had not held the deadly poison Kalakuta in your own throat, how could any of us have continued to hold onto our lives at all?'

Verse 11 (skanda.1.130.11)

devadāruvane pūrvaṁ munīnkevalakarmaṭhān prakṣobhya dhūrtaveṣastvaṁ dayayānvagrahīstathā

'Long ago in the Devadaru forest, you, disguised in the garb of a wandering mendicant, first agitated the sages devoted only to ritual works, and then, out of compassion, brought them to grace.'

Verse 12 (skanda.1.130.12)

aṁghriṇākrāṁtavānno cedatyugrāṁ tvamapasmṛtim tayākrāṁtamidaṁ kṛtsnamaṁdhakārāyate jagat

'Had you not trodden underfoot with your foot that fierce demon of forgetfulness, this whole world, overwhelmed by him, would have turned to utter darkness.'

Verse 13 (skanda.1.130.13)

ardhanārīśvaraṁ rūpaṁ tvayā cenna prakāśitam prabhavāmi kathaṁ sraṣṭuṁ jagadetaccarācaram

'And had you not manifested your form as Ardhanarishvara, half male and half female, how could I have ever had the power to create this whole world of moving and unmoving things?'

Verse 14 (skanda.1.130.14)

bhavatā staṁbhitaḥ śambho saṁraṁbhājjaṁbhajidbhujaḥ kiyaṁtaṁ haṁta kālaṁ te jayastaṁbha iva sthitaḥ

'O Shambhu, in your fury you once paralyzed the very arm of Indra, slayer of Jambha — and, ah, for how long that arm remained frozen, standing like some pillar of your victory!'

Verse 15 (skanda.1.130.15)

bhikṣoḥ kapālamāpūrya rudhireṇātmano hariḥ śūlenotkṣipya mumuhe hyetattvamavadhāraya

'You, the mendicant, filled your own skull-bowl with blood upon your trident and raised it aloft, and even Hari was left bewildered by this — know this well.'

Verse 16 (skanda.1.130.16)

na cedaśikṣayaḥ sarvaśastrāstrāṇyanukaṁpayā nirvāpayetkathaṁ vairaṁ kruddhopi jamadagnibhūḥ

'Had you not, out of compassion, taught him the use of every weapon and missile, how could Jamadagni's fiery son, even in his rage, have ever quenched his enmity?'

Verse 17 (skanda.1.130.17)

nṛhariṁ śarabhākāraḥ samahārṣīnna cedbhavān sa eva saṁharedviśvaṁ hiraṇyakaśiporapi

'Had you not, taking the form of Sharabha, subdued Narahari, that very form of Vishnu, grown terrible even after slaying Hiranyakashipu, might well have destroyed the entire universe.'

Verse 18 (skanda.1.130.18)

tvamācakṛkṣaḥ kalpābdhau kaivartto matsyakacchapau hariṁ baddhvāhirāṭsūtrairnṛsiṁhamatha sūkaram

'In the ocean at the end of the aeon, you yourself became the fisherman who drew forth the fish and the tortoise, and it was you who bound Hari fast with the cords of the serpent-king, in his forms as man-lion and as boar.'

Verse 19 (skanda.1.130.19)

ekone padmasāhasre svanetreṇa kṛtārcanam śūlinsudarśanaṁ dattvā daityadviṣamatūtupaḥ

'O trident-bearer, when he had worshipped you with a thousand lotuses less one, offering his own eye in place of the missing flower, you bestowed upon him the Sudarshana discus and thereby protected him, the enemy of the daityas.'

Verse 20 (skanda.1.130.20)

naṁdikeśvara uvāca stutyaivamasya viṣṇośca prārthanena prasedivān dhūrjaṭiḥ sṛṣṭikartṛtvaṁ punarasyābhyamanyata

Nandikeshvara said: Pleased thus by this hymn, and by the entreaty of Vishnu as well, Dhurjati once again confirmed upon Brahma the office of creator.

Verse 21 (skanda.1.130.21)

sama~jyāsu dvijānāṁ ca pūjanaṁ cānuśiṣṭavān ubhāvapyabravīdetau vātsalyāccadraśekharaḥ

He further instructed him regarding proper conduct and the honoring of brahmins, and then, out of sheer affection, moon-crested Shiva spoke to both of them.

Verse 22 (skanda.1.130.22)

śrīśiva uvāca vatsau yuvāṁ na jñātvaivaṁ bhūyo bhavatamuddhatau guruṁ smarato māmeva jāgrataṁ sṛṣṭirakṣayoḥ

Sri Shiva said: 'Children, without proper understanding you both once again became arrogant. Remember me as your guru always, and remain ever vigilant in your tasks of creation and preservation.'

Verse 23 (skanda.1.130.23)

iha pradeśe yuvayoryanmayānugrahaḥ kṛtaḥ puṇyakṣetramidaṁ puṁsāṁ tato mokṣāya kalpatām

'Since I have here, in this very place, bestowed my grace upon you both, let this become a sacred field, capable of granting liberation to all mankind.'

Verse 24 (skanda.1.130.24)

yojanatrayamātre'sminkṣetre nivasatāṁ nṛṇām dīkṣādikaṁ vināpyastu matsāyujyaṁ mamājñayā

'For men who dwell within this field of merely three yojanas' extent, let union with me be granted, by my own decree, even without initiation or any other rite.'

Verse 25 (skanda.1.130.25)

yadvā tiraścāmapyatra sthāvarāṇāṁ ca dehinām abuddhipūrvikā buddhirapavargasya jāyatām

'Or rather, let even animals and immobile creatures dwelling here, though lacking deliberate intelligence, spontaneously awaken to the thought of final liberation.'

Verse 26 (skanda.1.130.26)

nṛṇāṁ ca darśanāddūre kaivalyaṁ smaraṇena vā astu vedāṁtavijñānaṁ na sādhyaṁ niṣprayāsataḥ

'For men, let liberation come even through mere darshan or remembrance of this place from afar; let that Vedantic realization, otherwise unattainable without effort, arise here without striving.'

Verse 27 (skanda.1.130.27)

śubhāya taijasī mūrtiḥ sthāvarā mama śāśvatī aruṇādririti khyātā nityamevātra varttatām

'For the good of all, let this radiant form of mine, taking on an eternal, unmoving shape, remain here forever, known by the name of Arunadri, the red mountain.'

Verse 28 (skanda.1.130.28)

yugātyayepi nainaṁ tu majjayeyurmahābdhayaḥ na cālayeyurmaruto na daheyuśca vahnayaḥ

'Even at the dissolution of the ages, let the great oceans never submerge it, let the winds never shake it, and let fire never burn it.'

Verse 29 (skanda.1.130.29)

jyotirmayamidaṁ liṁgaṁ jyotiḥṣvapi na jātucit kramaṁtā nirgamāgatyā khecarāṇi samaṁtataḥ

'This linga of light, though made entirely of light itself, shall never be affected even by the very lights of the sky, as they pass to and fro all around it in their courses.'

Verse 30 (skanda.1.130.30)

yasyānugrahamicchāmi jaṁtotasyātra saṁbhavaḥ dehāṁte kalpatāṁ muktyai vinaupaniṣadīrgiraḥ

'Whatever creature I wish to favor, let it take birth in this place — and at the end of that body, without even need of the Upanishadic teachings, let it attain liberation.'

Verse 31 (skanda.1.130.31)

eṣa dūrātpraṇāmena nikarṣācca pradakṣiṇāt api pāpātmanāṁ puṁsāmastu niśreyasapradaḥ

'Let this place, whether approached with prostration from afar or with circumambulation up close, grant the highest good even to men of sinful nature.'

Verse 32 (skanda.1.130.32)

atraiva niyataṁ vāsāḥ saṁbhavaṁti mahātmanām tasmātsthalamidaṁ hitvā na gaṁtavyaṁ kadācana

'It is here alone that great souls come, by destiny, to make their abode. Therefore this place should never, under any circumstance, be forsaken.'

Verse 33 (skanda.1.130.33)

śoṇācalamanādṛtya kvacitsthitvāpi muktaye tasmādyuvāṁ vidhiharī vasataṁ cātra nityaśaḥ

'Even should one dwell elsewhere seeking liberation, without honoring this Shona mountain that effort would be in vain. Therefore, O Brahma and Hari, you two shall dwell here forever.'

Verse 34 (skanda.1.130.34)

naṁdikeśvara uvāca ityuktavaṁtaṁ kāmāriṁ praṇamya vidhimādhavau tau vyajñāpayatāṁ devaṁ dūrībhavadahaṁkriyau

Nandikeshvara said: Having heard this from the enemy of Kama, Brahma and Madhava bowed to him, and, their pride now cast far away, submitted this further request to the god.

Verse 35 (skanda.1.130.35)

vidhimādhavāvūcatuḥ evametajjagadādhāra jagadādhāratāṁ gataḥ āstāṁ girirasau kiṁ tu tejo hyasya sudussaham

Brahma and Madhava said: 'So be it, O support of the world, you who have become the very foundation of all worlds. Let this mountain remain as it is — yet its light is truly unbearable.'

Verse 36 (skanda.1.130.36)

atoyamuttamo rudra tejaḥ sāmānyaśailavat tiṣṭhatvabhedyamahimā niśreyasamahākhaniḥ

'Therefore, O Rudra, let this supreme radiance take the outward form of an ordinary mountain, that its inviolable glory may stand as a great mine of the highest good for all.'

Verse 37 (skanda.1.130.37)

vivṛṇoti nijaṁ jyotirviśvasyāsya samṛddhaye pratyabdaṁ kārttike māsi kṛttikāsu dinātyaye

'Let it reveal its own true light, for the prosperity of the whole world, once every year, in the month of Karttika, on the day of Krittika, at the close of day.'

Verse 38 (skanda.1.130.38)

śarmadopi nṛṇāṁ deva śoṇādristava śāsanāt mahattvādarcituṁ śakyo na syādbhaktasya kasyacit

'Yet, O God, though by your own decree this Shona mountain grants such well-being to men, on account of its very vastness it is not something that any devotee could easily worship directly.'

Verse 39 (skanda.1.130.39)

etasyopatyakāyāṁ tadadyārabhyāsmadarthanāt devena sannidhātavyamavanyāṁ liṁgarūpiṇā

'Therefore, from this day forward, at our request, let the god take up his abode at the foot of this mountain, upon the earth itself, in the form of a linga.'

Verse 40 (skanda.1.130.40)

taccāruṇagirīśānamāvāmārādhayāvahe abhiṣekānulepādyairupacārairyathāvidhi

'Then we two shall worship you there, as the lord of Aruna's mountain, with proper rites — sacred ablution, anointing, and all the other prescribed offerings.'

Verse 41 (skanda.1.130.41)

saṁtyatra keśarāścūtā nāgapuṁnāgakesarāḥ āragvadhāḥ kurabakā mālūrāḥ pāṭalā api

'Here indeed there grow saffron-blossoms, mango trees, naga and punnaga and kesara trees, amaltas, kurabaka flowers, wood-apple, and patala trees as well.'

Verse 42 (skanda.1.130.42)

atraiva sannidhātavyaṁ devadeva dayānidhe yatastvadbhaktidārḍhyaṁ nau bhavatāttvadupāsanāt

'Right here, O God of gods, O ocean of compassion, you should take up your abode — so that through worship of you our devotion to you may grow ever firm.'

Verse 43 (skanda.1.130.43)

nānyathā cittaśuddhirnnau deve'pyevaṁ praseduṣi anādyavidyāvṛtaye yo bhaviṣyati nityaśaḥ

'For without this, our minds cannot be purified, O God, even though you have already shown us such grace — since the veil of beginningless ignorance would otherwise remain forever.'

Verse 44 (skanda.1.130.44)

śoṇādreḥ pūrvadigbhāge sa eṣa bhṛśamunnataḥ sa evālaṁ nivāsāya devasya hṛdayaṁgamaḥ

'On the eastern side of the Shona mountain there stands a spot, greatly elevated — this alone is fit, and pleasing to the heart, for the god's abode.'

Verse 45 (skanda.1.130.45)

sāṁgavedā dharmaśāstraṁ purāṇāni śivāgamāḥ kṛtvā ca sakalāḥ proktā bhavataiva bhavāvayoḥ

'The Vedas together with their limbs, the Dharmashastras, the Puranas, and the Shaiva Agamas — all these have been composed and taught to us both by you alone, O Bhava.'

Verse 46 (skanda.1.130.46)

niśreyasāya bhaktānāṁ tvayaiva gururūpiṇā aṣṭāviṁśatirākhyātā āgamāḥ śaivasaṁjñitāḥ

'For the highest good of your devotees, you yourself, in the form of the guru, have proclaimed the twenty-eight Agamas known as the Shaiva scriptures.'

Verse 47 (skanda.1.130.47)

teṣu kasya prakāreṇa kurvāṇau tvadupāsanām kadāpyajñānajāmārtiṁ nādhigacchāva śaṁkara

'By the method of which of these should we worship you, O Shankara, so that we may never at any time fall again into the affliction born of ignorance?'

Verse 48 (skanda.1.130.48)

naṁdikeśvara uvāca iti tau dhātṛgoviṁdau pādapadmāvalaṁbinau jagāda karuṇāmūrttirjagatībhṛtsutāpatiḥ

Nandikeshvara said: Thus spoke the two, Brahma and Govinda, clinging to Shiva's lotus feet; and then the embodiment of compassion, the husband of the mountain's daughter, replied to them.

Verse 49 (skanda.1.130.49)

śrīmahādeva uvāca yuktamuktamidaṁ bhadrau mayāpyevaṁ manīṣitam kāmikoktena mārgeṇa māmarcayitumarhathaḥ

Sri Mahadeva said: 'This request, O gracious ones, is well and fittingly made — I too have thought the very same. You should worship me according to the path taught in the Kamika Agama.'

Verse 50 (skanda.1.130.50)

mohato vismṛtā manye bhavadbhyāṁ śaivasaṁhitā adhunā matprasādena punarudbhāsatāṁ hṛdi

'It seems that, through delusion, you two had forgotten the Shaiva Samhita; now, by my grace, let it shine forth again in your hearts.'

Verse 51 (skanda.1.130.51)

nandīśa uvāca ityuktvā śrīśavāgīśau giriśo'ntaradhādatha tadā prādurabhūttatra liṁgaṁ kimapi maṁgalam

Nandisha said: Having spoken thus to the lords of speech and wealth, Girisha then vanished from sight; and there, in that place, a certain auspicious linga at once appeared.

Verse 52 (skanda.1.130.52)

taccāvalokya sāścaryyau mukundakamalāsanau muhuḥ praṇamya sānaṁdaṁ prārcya tuṣṭuvatuściram

Beholding it, Mukunda and the lotus-seated Brahma, filled with wonder, bowed again and again in joy, worshipped it, and praised it at length.

Verse 53 (skanda.1.130.53)

tāvakārayatāṁ śoṇagirināthasya cālayam nānāśilpādbhutaṁ viśvakarmaṇā pracayena ca

They two then had a temple built for the lord of the Shona mountain, wondrous with manifold craftsmanship, raised in abundance by Vishvakarma himself.

Verse 54 (skanda.1.130.54)

khānayāmāsatustatra saraḥ kimapi pāvanam abhiṣekāya devasya sarvatīrthamayaṁ navam

There they also had dug a certain sacred tank, newly made, containing within itself the essence of every sacred water, for the abhisheka of the god.

Verse 55 (skanda.1.130.55)

aruṇākhyaṁ puraṁ cārātkalpayāmāsatuściram siddhyai notkaṁṭhate labdhvā kailāsāyāpi dhūrjaṭiḥ

Nearby they also fashioned, over a long time, a city named Aruna — so wondrous that Dhurjati himself, having found it, no longer longed even for Kailasa.
