—as though warding off the impurity of the worlds with his glances, wave upon wave of the ocean of compassion, dwellings fit for lotus-throned Lakshmi—

Verse 29 (skanda.1.138.29)

vyajñāpayacca bhūpālo maulīkṛtaśatāṁjaliḥ kṣālayanniva daṁtāṁśujālaistatpādapaṁkaje

The king, with his crowned head bowed and palms joined a hundredfold, submitted his prayer, as though washing the Lord's lotus feet with the streams of light from his own teeth.

Verse 31 (skanda.1.138.31)

As he spoke thus, utterly humbled, the ocean of compassion, the Lord of the world, the God who is the Lord of the Red Mountain, addressed him.

Verse 33 (skanda.1.138.33)

śrīmaheśvara uvāca mā bhaiṣīrvatsa bhadraṁ te saṁtyaṣṭau mama mūrttayaḥ tāḥ sarvāḥ sarvajaṁtūnāmatyarthaṁ parikalpitāḥ

Sri Maheshvara said: Do not fear, my child; may you be blessed. I have eight forms; all of them are ordained entirely for the sake of all living beings.

Verse 34 (skanda.1.138.34)

purā puraṁdarastvaṁ hi kailāsaśikhare sthitam garvito māmavāmaṁsthāḥ staṁbhitaśca tadā mayā

Long ago, you were Purandara; filled with pride, you had disrespected me as I stood on the peak of Kailasa, and I then made you motionless.

Verse 35 (skanda.1.138.35)

kṣaṇaṁ galitagarvastvaṁ staṁbhanā vrīḍitastadā ayāciṣṭhāḥ śivajñānamakhilaiśvaryakāraṇam

For a moment, your pride melted away, and, embarrassed by that immobilization, you then begged for knowledge of Shiva, the cause of all lordship.

Verse 36 (skanda.1.138.36)

ādiṣṭastvaṁ mayā vajrinnavatīryāvaniṁ bhavān rājā vajrāṁgado bhūtvā lapsyase matkṛpāmiti

O wielder of the thunderbolt, I then instructed you: descend to the earth, become King Vajrangada, and you shall obtain my grace.

Verse 37 (skanda.1.138.37)

jātaṁ tataḥ prabhāveṇa kṣetrametanmadāspadam śikṣitotīva mugdhastvaṁ bhaktosi ca paraṁ mayi

Through that decree it came about that this place became my abode; though you were exceedingly naive, you have now been well instructed, and you are supremely devoted to me.

Verse 38 (skanda.1.138.38)

adhunātisaparyābhistvatkṛtābhiraharniśam parituṣṭosmyahaṁ rājannatastvāṁ bodhayāmyaham

Now, through your worship rendered day and night, O king, I am fully satisfied; therefore I shall now enlighten you.

Verse 39 (skanda.1.138.39)

khaṁ vāyuranalo vāri bhūḥ sūrya śaśinau pumān iti manmūrttibhirviśvaṁ bhāsate sacarācaram

Ether, air, fire, water, earth, sun, moon, and the human sacrificer — through these forms of mine, the entire universe, moving and unmoving, is illumined.

Verse 40 (skanda.1.138.40)

kālo hi kālayāmyarthānsattvānadhvana eva ca tattvātītaḥ śivaścāhaṁ na mattostīha kiṁcana

As Time, I set in motion all things, all beings and all paths; yet I, Shiva, am beyond the tattvas, and there exists nothing here apart from me.

Verse 41 (skanda.1.138.41)

aparyaṁtacidānaṁdasiṁdhorme kecidūrmayaḥ vedhomukundarudreṁdramukhānāhuruditvarāḥ

Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Indra, and the others are said to be but a few rising waves of my boundless ocean of consciousness and bliss.

Verse 42 (skanda.1.138.42)

vāṇīlakṣmīkṣamāśraddhāprajñāsvāhāsvadhādayaḥ asaṁkhyeyamahāśaktermama visṛṣṭiśaktayaḥ

Sarasvati, Lakshmi, Kshama, Shraddha, Prajna, Svaha, Svadha, and the rest, are the creative powers of my immeasurable great Shakti.

Verse 43 (skanda.1.138.43)

iyaṁ mama mahāśaktirgaurī māyā jagatprasūḥ anayācchādyate viśvaṁ śaśvadvistāryate'pi ca

This Gauri is my great Shakti, the Maya that gives birth to the universe; by her the universe is ever veiled, and by her too it is ever unfolded.

Verse 44 (skanda.1.138.44)

śaktyānayānvitaḥ sargarakṣāsaṁhṛtivibhramaḥ vicitrametatpaśyāmi jagaccitraṁ nijecchayā

United with this Shakti, engaged in the play of creation, preservation and dissolution, I behold, by my own will, this wondrous picture of the universe.

Verse 45 (skanda.1.138.45)

apavāhitamohastvaṁ mahimā me vicāraya ātmānamavibhinnaṁ me taraṁgamiva vāridheḥ

Now that your delusion has been washed away, reflect upon my greatness; know your own self to be not different from me, as a wave is not different from the ocean.

Verse 46 (skanda.1.138.46)

tato madrūpaśālinyā ādhipatyaṁ kṣitergataḥ matprasādena rājeṁdra bhuṁkṣva bhogānyathāsukham

Then, having attained lordship of the earth adorned with my own form, O king of kings, enjoy your pleasures freely, according to your comfort, through my grace.

Verse 47 (skanda.1.138.47)

punaḥ puraṁdaratvena bhuktadivyasukhaściram madekarūpatāṁ rājanniścayāttvamavāpsyasi

Then, having enjoyed divine pleasures once more for a long time as Purandara, O king, you shall surely attain oneness with my very form.

Verse 48 (skanda.1.138.48)

naṁdikeśvara uvāca ityuktvāṁtarhite deve rājā vajrāṁgadaḥ kṛtī śoṇeśaṁ pūjayanneva sarvānbhogānavāptavān

Nandikeshvara said: Having spoken thus, when the Lord disappeared, the accomplished King Vajrangada, continuing to worship the Lord of the Red Mountain, obtained all manner of enjoyments.

Verse 49 (skanda.1.138.49)

itthaṁ te kathitaṁ sādho śivabhaktavijṛṁbhaṇam pradakṣiṇāphalaṁ caiva śoṇaśailasya śāśvatam

Thus, O virtuous one, I have told you of the flowering of devotion to Shiva, and also the eternal fruit of circumambulating the Red Mountain.

Verse 50 (skanda.1.138.50)

kiṁ vācāṁ vistareṇātra śoṇaśailapradakṣiṇā mahatāmaśvamedhānāṁ śatādapi viśiṣyate

What need is there of many words here? Circumambulation of the Red Mountain surpasses even a hundred great Ashvamedha sacrifices.

Verse 51 (skanda.1.138.51)

viṣuvāyanasaṁkrāti vyatīpātādiparvasu pradakṣiṇācchoṇagirerasaṁkhyeyaṁ phalaṁ labhet

On the occasions of the equinox, solstice, and vyatipata and other sacred conjunctions, one obtains immeasurable merit from circumambulating the Red Mountain.

Verse 52 (skanda.1.138.52)

na kṣetramaruṇādasti nāsti devo'ruṇeśvarāt nāpi pradakṣiṇādanyadvipadyate'bhyadhikaṁ tapaḥ

There is no sacred place equal to Aruna, no god equal to Arunesvara; nor is there any austerity that yields greater fruit than circumambulation.

Verse 53 (skanda.1.138.53)

iti kathayati naṁdikeśvaresminpulakitasarvavapurmṛkaṇḍuputraḥ muhuradhigataharṣavāṣpavṛṣṭirmahati nimagna ivābhavatsudhābdhau

As Nandikeshvara related this, the son of Mrikandu, his whole body thrilled with rapture, his eyes repeatedly streaming with tears of joy, seemed to be immersed as though in a great ocean of nectar.
