Maheshvara Khanda · Chapter 15

Indra's Sin and the Curse of Nahusha

Chapter 14All chaptersChapter 16

Verse 1 (skanda.1.15.1)

|| ṛṣaya ūcuḥ|| rājyaṃ prāpto hi deveṃdraḥ kathitaste guruṃ vinā|| guroravajñayā jāto rājyabhraṃśo hi tasya tu

The sages said: You told us that Devendra obtained his kingdom without a guru; and that it was through disrespect of his guru that he lost his kingdom.

Verse 2 (skanda.1.15.2)

kena praṇoditaśceṃdro babhūva ciramāsane|| tatsarvaṃ kathayāśu tvaṃ paraṃ kautūhalaṃ hi naḥ

By whom was he driven from that throne, and for how long did he remain deprived of it? Tell us all this quickly, for we are filled with the greatest curiosity.

Verse 3 (skanda.1.15.3)

||lomaśa uvāca|| guruṇāpi vinā rājyaṃ kṛtavānsa śacīpatiḥ|| viśvarūpoktavidhinā iṃdro rājye sthito mahān

Lomasha said: Without a guru, Shachi's lord ruled his kingdom; the great Indra remained established in his rule following the rites laid down by Vishvarupa.

Verse 4 (skanda.1.15.4)

viśvakarmasuto viprā viśvarūpo mahānṛpaḥ|| purohito'tha śakrasya yājakaścābhavattadā

O brahmins, Vishvarupa, son of Vishvakarma, a great and noble being, had at that time become Indra's priest and officiant.

Verse 5 (skanda.1.15.5)

tasminyajñe'vadānaiśca yajane asurānsurān|| manuṣyāṃścaiva triśirā aparokṣaṃ śacīpateḥ

In that sacrifice, offering oblations to the asuras, the gods and men through the shares of the offerings, the three-headed Vishvarupa, unseen by Shachi's lord —

Verse 6 (skanda.1.15.6)

devāndadāti sākrośaṃ daityāṃstūṣṇīmathādadāt|| manuṣyānmadhyapātena pratyahaṃ sa grahāndvijaḥ

gave open shares to the gods, but gave to the daityas in secret; and that brahmin, day after day, granted a hidden middle portion to men as well.

Verse 7 (skanda.1.15.7)

ekadā tu maheṃdreṇa sūcito gurulāghavāt|| alakṣyamāṇena tadā jñātaṃ tasya cikīrṣitam

Once, by mere chance, Mahendra came to notice this cleverness of his guru, and understood what he intended.

Verse 8 (skanda.1.15.8)

daityānāṃ kāryasiddhyarthamavadānaṃ prayacchati|| asau purohito'smākaṃ pareṣāṃ ca phalapradaḥ

"He gives this share for the fulfilment of the daityas' purpose alone; though our own priest, he is truly a bestower of fruit upon others."

Verse 9 (skanda.1.15.9)

iti matvā tadā śakro vajreṇa śataparvaṇā|| ciccheda tacchirāṃsyeva tatkṣaṇādabhavadvadhaḥ

Thinking thus, the enraged Indra severed all three of his heads with his hundred-jointed thunderbolt — and at that very instant he was slain.

Verse 10 (skanda.1.15.10)

yenākarotsomapānamajāyaṃta kapiṃjalāḥ|| tatonyena surāpānātkalaviṃkā bhavanmukhāt

From the head with which he had drunk the soma, kapinjala birds sprang forth; and from the other mouth, with which he had drunk wine, sparrows were born.

Verse 11 (skanda.1.15.11)

anyānanādajāyaṃta tittirā viśvarūpiṇaḥ|| evaṃ hato viśvarūpaḥ śakreṇa maṃdabhāginā

And from the food eaten by his third, all-embracing mouth, partridges came into being. Thus was Vishvarupa slain at the hands of the ill-fated Indra.

Verse 12 (skanda.1.15.12)

brahmahatyā tadodbhūtā durdharṣā ca bhayāvahā|| durdharṣā durmukhā duṣṭā caṇḍālarajasānvitā

From this, at once, a most formidable and dreadful Brahmahatya, the sin of killing a brahmin, sprang forth — unassailable, hideous of face, wicked, covered with the dust of the outcaste.

Verse 13 (skanda.1.15.13)

brahmahatyā surāpānaṃ steyaṃ gurvaṃganāgamaḥ|| ityeṣāmapyaghavatāmidameva ca niṣkṛtiḥ

For the killing of a brahmin, the drinking of liquor, theft, and violation of the guru's wife — for those guilty of even these sins, this alone is declared as their atonement —

Verse 14 (skanda.1.15.14)

nāmavyāharaṇaṃ viṣṇoryatastadviṣayā matiḥ|| triśirā dhūmrahastā sā śakraṃ grastumupāyayau

namely, the utterance of Vishnu's name, for the mind of the sinner remains fixed there. That three-headed, smoke-handed Brahmahatya rushed forth to devour Indra.

Verse 15 (skanda.1.15.15)

tato bhayena mahatā palāyanaparo'bhavat|| palāyamānaṃ taṃ dṛṣṭvā hyanuyātā bhayāvahā

Then, in great terror, he took to flight; and seeing him flee, that terrible Brahmahatya pursued him close behind.

Verse 16 (skanda.1.15.16)

yato dhāvati sā'dhāvattiṣṭhaṃtamanutiṣṭhati|| aṃgakṛtā yathā chāyā śakrasyapariveṣṭitum|| āyāti tāvatsahasā iṃdro'pyapsu nyamajjata

Wherever he ran, she ran; wherever he stood still, she too stood still — like a shadow cast upon his own body, coming to seize him; then Indra suddenly plunged into the waters.

Verse 17 (skanda.1.15.17)

śīghratvena yathā viprāściraṃtanajalecaraḥ

O brahmins, with great speed he hid himself in the waters, taking the form of an ancient creature of the water.

Verse 18 (skanda.1.15.18)

evaṃ divyaśataṃ pūrṇaṃ varṣāṇāṃ ca śacīpateḥ|| vasatastasya duḥkhena tathā caiva śatadvayam|| arājakaṃ tadā jātaṃ nākapṛṣṭhe bhayāvaham

Thus, as Shachi's lord dwelt there in misery, a full hundred divine years passed, and then two hundred more; and then a most fearful state of anarchy arose in heaven.

Verse 19 (skanda.1.15.19)

tadā ciṃtānvitā devā ṛṣayo'pi tapasvinaḥ|| trailokyaṃ cā'padā grastaṃ babhūva ca tadā dvijāḥ

O brahmins, then the gods and the ascetic sages too fell into deep anxiety; the three worlds were then engulfed in calamity.

Verse 20 (skanda.1.15.20)

eko'pi brahmahā yatra rāṣṭre vasati nirbhayaḥ|| akālamaraṇaṃ tatra sādhūnāmupajāyate

In whatever realm even a single killer of a brahmin dwells unafraid, there even the virtuous meet untimely death.

Verse 21 (skanda.1.15.21)

rājā pāpayuto yasminrāṣṭre vasati tatra vai|| durbhikṣaṃ caiva maraṇaṃ tathaivopadravā dvijāḥ

O brahmins, in whatever kingdom a sinful king dwells, there famine, death, and manifold calamities —

Verse 22 (skanda.1.15.22)

bhavaṃti bahavo'narthāḥ prajānāṃ nāśahetave|| tasmādrājñā tu kartavyo dharmmaḥ śraddhāpareṇa hi

become many causes for the destruction of the people. Therefore a king must observe dharma with utmost devotion.

Verse 23 (skanda.1.15.23)

tathā prakṛtayo rājñaḥ śucajitvena pratiṣṭhitāḥ|| indreṇa ca kṛtaṃ pāpaṃ tena pāpena vai dvijāḥ|| nānāvidhairmahātāpaiḥ sopadravamabhūjjagat

The king's subjects too remain bound by his own sorrow and his own triumph. O brahmins, it was through Indra's very sin that the world, afflicted by manifold great torments, fell into disorder.

Verse 24 (skanda.1.15.24)

||śaunaka uvāca|| aśvamedhaśatenaiva prāptaṃ rājyaṃ mahattaram|| devānāmakhilaṃ sūta kasmādvighramajāyata|| śakrasya ca mahābhāga yathāvatkathayasva na

Shaunaka said: The gods had won that great kingdom through a hundred horse-sacrifices; O Suta, how then did such calamity fall upon Indra's entire realm? Tell us truly, O most fortunate one.

Verse 25 (skanda.1.15.25)

||sūta uvāca|| devānāṃ dānavānāṃ ca manuṣyāṇāṃ viśeṣataḥ|| karmmaiva sukhaduḥkhānāṃ hetubhūtaṃ na saṃśayaḥ

Suta said: For gods, for demons, and especially for men, action, karma, alone is the cause of joy and sorrow — of this there is no doubt.

Verse 26 (skanda.1.15.26)

indreṇa ca kṛtaṃ viprā mahadbhūtaṃ jugupsitam|| guroravajñā ca kṛtā viśvarūpavadhaḥ kṛtaḥ

O brahmins, Indra committed one great and detestable act — he showed contempt for his guru and slew Vishvarupa.

Verse 27 (skanda.1.15.27)

gautamasya guroḥ patnī sevitā tasya tatphalam|| prāptaṃ maheṃdreṇa ciraṃ yasya nāsti pratikriyā

He had also enjoyed the wife of his guru Gautama, and the fruit of that too he bore for a long time — for it there was no remedy.

Verse 28 (skanda.1.15.28)

ye hi dṛṣkaṭatakarmmāṇo na kurvaṃti ca niṣkṛtim|| durdaśāṃ prapnuvantyete yathaivendraḥ śatakratuḥ

Those who commit evil deeds and perform no atonement for them meet with the same misfortune as Indra of the hundred sacrifices.

Verse 29 (skanda.1.15.29)

duṣkṛtopārjitasyā taḥ prāyāścittaṃ hi tatkṣaṇāt|| kartavyaṃ vidhivadviprāḥ sarvapāpopaśāṃtaye

O brahmins, atonement for sin acquired through wrongdoing should be performed at once, according to rule, so that all sin may be pacified.

Verse 30 (skanda.1.15.30)

upapātakamadhyastaṃ mahāpātakatāṃ vrajet

Even a minor sin, if left without atonement, becomes equal to a great sin.

Verse 31 (skanda.1.15.31)

tataḥ svadharmaniṣṭhāṃ ca ye kurvaṃti sadā narāḥ|| prātarmadhyāhnasāyāhne teṣāṃ pāpaṃ vinaśyati

Those men who remain ever steadfast in their own dharma, morning, noon and evening, see their sins destroyed.

Verse 32 (skanda.1.15.32)

prāpnuvaṃtyuttamaṃ lokaṃ nātra kāryā vicāraṇā|| tasmādasau durācāraḥ prāpte vai karmaṇaḥ phalam

They attain the highest world, and there is no need to question this; therefore that ill-conducted Indra too, having received the fruit of his own deed —

Verse 33 (skanda.1.15.33)

sa pradhārya tadā sarve lokapālāstvarānvitāḥ|| bṛhaspatimupāgamya sarvamātmani dhiṣṭhitam|| kathayāmāsuravyagrā iṃdrasya ca guruṃ prati

having ascertained this, all the guardians of the quarters went swiftly to Brihaspati and, in their agitation, told the guru of Indra everything they themselves knew.

Verse 34 (skanda.1.15.34)

devairuktaṃ vaco viprā niśamya ca bṛhaspatiḥ|| arājakaṃ ca saṃprāptaṃ ciṃtayāmāsa buddhimān

O brahmins, hearing these words of the gods, the wise Brihaspati began to reflect deeply on the anarchy that had befallen heaven.

Verse 35 (skanda.1.15.35)

kiṃ kāryaṃ cādya kartavyaṃ kathaṃ śreyo bhaviṣyati|| devānāṃ cādya lokānāmṛṣīṇāṃ bhāvitātmanām

"What should now be done? By what means will good come to the gods, the worlds, and the sages of purified soul?"

Verse 36 (skanda.1.15.36)

manasaiva ca tatsarvaṃ kāryākāryaṃ vicārya ca|| jagāma śakraṃ tvarito devaiḥ saha mahāyaśāḥ

Having weighed in his own mind all that should and should not be done, that most renowned Brihaspati set out at once, together with the gods, toward Indra.

Verse 37 (skanda.1.15.37)

prāpto jalāśayaṃ taṃ ca yatrāste hi puraṃdaraḥ|| yasya tīre sthitā hatyā caṃḍālīva bhayāvahā

He arrived at that pool where Purandara dwelt, on whose bank that terrible Brahmahatya sat like an outcaste woman.

Verse 38 (skanda.1.15.38)

tatroviṣṭāste sarve devā ṛṣigaṇānvitāḥ|| āhvānaṃ ca kṛtaṃ tasya śakrasya guruṇā svayam

There all the gods, together with the hosts of sages, sat down; and the guru himself called out to Indra.

Verse 39 (skanda.1.15.39)

samutthitastataḥ śakro dadarśa svaguruṃ tadā|| bāṣpapūritavaktro hi bṛhaspatimabhāṣata

Then Shakra rose and beheld his guru there; and with a face filled with tears, he spoke to Brihaspati —

Verse 40 (skanda.1.15.40)

praṇipatya ca tatratyānkṛtāñjalirabhāṣata|| tadā dīnamukho bhūtvā manasā saṃvimṛśya ca

Bowing to all who were present, with joined palms, his face downcast, reflecting deeply within himself, he said —

Verse 41 (skanda.1.15.41)

svayameva kṛtaṃ pūrvamajñānalakṣaṇaṃ mahat|| adhunaiva mayā kāryaṃ kiṃ kartavyaṃ vada prabho

"Once, out of my own ignorance, I myself committed this great deed; now tell me, O lord, what I should do."

Verse 42 (skanda.1.15.42)

prahasyovāca bhagavānbṛhaspati rudāradhīḥ|| purā tvayā kṛtaṃ yacca tasyedaṃ karmaṇaḥ phalam

Hearing this, the noble-minded, blessed Brihaspati smiled and said: "This is the fruit of that very deed which you did before."

Verse 43 (skanda.1.15.43)

māṃ ca uddiśya bho iṃdra tadbhogādeva saṃkṣayaḥ|| prāyaścitaṃ hi hatyāyā na dṛṣṭaṃ smṛtikāribhiḥ

"O Indra, that which you did with me as its object has led to this decline through its own consequence; the writers of the Smritis have found no atonement at all for the killing of a brahmin."

Verse 44 (skanda.1.15.44)

ajñānato hi yajjātaṃ pāpaṃ tasya pratikriyā|| kathitā dharmmaśāstrajñaiḥ sakāmasya na vidyate

"For sin born of ignorance, the knowers of dharma-shastra have declared a remedy; but for sin committed with full intent, no such remedy exists."

Verse 45 (skanda.1.15.45)

sakāmena kṛtaṃ pāpamakāmaṃ naiva jāyate|| tābhyāṃ viṣayabhedena prāyaścittaṃ vidhīyate

"A sin committed intentionally can never be equal to one committed unintentionally; and so atonement is prescribed according to this very distinction between the two."

Verse 46 (skanda.1.15.46)

maraṇāṃto vidhiḥ kāryo kāmena hi kṛtena hi|| ajñānajanite pāpe prāyaścittaṃ vidhīyate

"For an intentional sin, the rite must be observed unto death itself; only for sin arising from ignorance is atonement prescribed."

Verse 47 (skanda.1.15.47)

tasmāttvayā kṛtaṃ yacca svayameva hato dvijaḥ|| purohitaśca vidvāṃśca tasmānnāsti pratikriyā

"Therefore what you have done — slaying, with your own hand, a learned brahmin who was your own priest — has for it no remedy."

Verse 48 (skanda.1.15.48)

yāvanmaraṇamapyeti tāvadapsu sthiro bhava

"Until death itself comes, remain steadfast here in these very waters."

Verse 49 (skanda.1.15.49)

śatāśvamedhasaṃjñaṃ ca yatphalaṃ tava durmate|| tannaṣṭaṃ tatkṣaṇādeva ghātito hi dvijo yadā

"O ill-counselled one, the merit you gained, called the fruit of a hundred horse-sacrifices, was destroyed at that very instant when that brahmin was slain."

Verse 50 (skanda.1.15.50)

sacchidre ca yathā toyaṃ na tiṣṭhati ghaṭe'ṇvapi|| tathaiva sukṛtaṃ pāpe hīyate ca pradakṣiṇam

"As water does not remain even a moment in a cracked pot, so too, once sin has entered, merit dwindles and flows away, however great it was."

Verse 51 (skanda.1.15.51)

tasmācca daivasaṃyogātprāptaṃ svargādikaṃ ca yaiḥ|| yathoktaṃ tadbhavetteṣāṃ dharmiṣṭhānāṃ na saṃśayaḥ

"Therefore for the truly righteous, who by the working of fate attain heaven and the like, the fruit remains exactly as scripture declares — of this there is no doubt."

Verse 52 (skanda.1.15.52)

etacchrutvā vacastasya śakro vacanamabravīt|| kukarmaṇā madīyena prāptametanna saṃśayaḥ

Hearing these words, Shakra said: "It is through my own evil deed alone that all this has come upon me — of this there is no doubt."

Verse 53 (skanda.1.15.53)

amarāvatī māśu tvaṃ gaccha devarṣibiḥ saha|| lokānāṃ kāryasiddhyarthe devānāṃ ca bṛhaspate|| iṃdraṃ kuru mahābhāga yaste manasi rocate

"O Brihaspati, go at once to Amaravati with the divine sages; for the fulfilment of the purpose of the worlds and the gods, O most fortunate one, make whoever pleases your own mind into Indra."

Verse 54 (skanda.1.15.54)

yathā mṛtastathā haṃ vai brahmahatyāvṛto mahān|| rāgadveṣasamutthena pāpenāsmi pariplutaḥ

"I am now as good as dead, wrapped in this great sin of killing a brahmin; I am submerged in this sin, born of passion and hatred."

Verse 55 (skanda.1.15.55)

tasmāttvarānvitā yūyaṃ devarājānamāśuḥ vai|| kurvatu madanujñātāḥ satyaṃ prativadāmi vaḥ

"Therefore let all of you, without delay, at once make someone the king of the gods, with my leave — I speak this to you in truth."

Verse 56 (skanda.1.15.56)

evamuktāstadā sarve bṛhaspatipurogamāḥ|| etyāmarāvatīṃ tūrṇaṃ puraṃdaraviceṣṭitam|| kathayāmāsuravyagrā śacīṃ prati yathā tathā

Hearing this, all of them, led by Brihaspati, returned swiftly to Amaravati, and told Shachi, in their agitation, the true account of Purandara's plight.

Verse 57 (skanda.1.15.57)

rājyasya hetoḥ kiṃ kāryaṃ vimṛśaṃtaḥ parasparam

They began to deliberate among themselves as to what should be done for the sake of the kingdom.

Verse 58 (skanda.1.15.58)

evaṃ vimṛśyamānānāṃ devānāṃ tatra nāradaḥ|| yadṛcchayāgatastatra devarṣiramitadyutiḥ

While the gods were thus lost in deliberation, the boundlessly radiant divine sage Narada happened to arrive there.

Verse 59 (skanda.1.15.59)

uvāca pūjito devānkasmādyūyaṃ vicetasaḥ|| tenoktāḥ kathayāmāsuḥ sarvaṃ śakrasya ceṣṭitam

Honoured by them, he asked the gods: "Why are you all so troubled?" And they told him the entire story of Indra's deed.

Verse 60 (skanda.1.15.60)

gatamiṃdrasya ceṃdratvamenasā parameṇa tu|| tataḥ provāca tāndevāndevarṣirnārado vacaḥ

Because of that great sin, Indra had lost his very Indra-hood — hearing this, the divine sage Narada spoke these words to the gods —

Verse 61 (skanda.1.15.61)

yūyaṃ devāśca sarvajñāstapasā vikrameṇa ca|| tasmādiṃdro hi kartavyo nahuṣaḥ somavaṃśajaḥ

"You gods are all-knowing, endowed with austerity and valour; therefore Nahusha, born of the lunar dynasty, should be made Indra."

Verse 62 (skanda.1.15.62)

so'sminrāṣṭre pratiṣṭhāpyastvaritenaiva nirjarāḥ|| ekonamaśvamedhānāṃ śataṃ tena mahātmanā|| kṛtamasti mahābhāgā nahuṣeṇa ca yajvanā

"O undying gods, quickly establish him in this kingdom; O most fortunate ones, that great-souled sacrificer Nahusha has already performed ninety-nine horse-sacrifices."

Verse 63 (skanda.1.15.63)

śacyā śrutaṃ ca tadvākyaṃ nāradasya mukhodgatam|| gatāṃtaḥpuramavyagrā bāṣpapūritalocanā

Hearing these words from Narada's own lips, Shachi, greatly distressed, her eyes filled with tears, went to her private chambers.

Verse 64 (skanda.1.15.64)

nāradasya vacaḥ śrutvā sarve devānvamodayan

Hearing Narada's words, all the gods rejoiced.

Verse 65 (skanda.1.15.65)

nahuṣaṃ rājyamāroḍhumaikapadyena te yadā|| ānīto hi tadā rājā nahuṣo hyamarāvatīm

When they set out, with one accord, to install Nahusha upon the throne, King Nahusha was brought to Amaravati.

Verse 66 (skanda.1.15.66)

rājyaṃ dattaṃ maheṃdrasya suraiḥ sarvairmaharṣibhiḥ|| tadāgastyādayaḥ sarve nahuṣaṃ paryupāsata

All the gods and great sages bestowed upon him Mahendra's kingdom; then Agastya and all the other sages attended upon Nahusha.

Verse 67 (skanda.1.15.67)

gaṃdharvāpsaraso yakṣā vidyādharamahoragāḥ|| yakṣāḥ suparṇāḥ patagā ye cānye svargavāsinaḥ

Gandharvas, apsaras, yakshas, vidyadharas, great serpents, yakshas, suparnas, birds, and all others who dwell in heaven —

Verse 68 (skanda.1.15.68)

tadā mahotsavo jāto devapuryāṃ niraṃtaraḥ|| śaṃkhatūryamṛdaṃgāni nedurduṃdubhayaḥ samam

in the city of the gods, a great, unceasing festival then began; conches, trumpets and mridangas resounded together with the dundubhis.

Verse 69 (skanda.1.15.69)

gāyakāśca jagustatra tathā vādyāni vādakāḥ|| nartakā nanṛtustatra tathā rājyamahotsave

Singers sang there, musicians played their instruments, and dancers danced at that great coronation festival.

Verse 70 (skanda.1.15.70)

abhiṣiktastadā tatra bṛhaspatipurogamaiḥ

There, led by Brihaspati, he was anointed.

Verse 71 (skanda.1.15.71)

arcito devasūktaiśca yathā vadgrahapūjanam|| kṛtavāṃścaiva ṛṣibhirvidvadbhirbhāvitātmabhiḥ

He was worshipped with the divine hymns, and the learned sages, of purified heart, duly performed the propitiation of the planets for him as well.

Verse 72 (skanda.1.15.72)

tathā ca sarvaiḥ paripūjito mahānrājā surāṇāṃ nahuṣastadānīm|| iṃdrāsane ceṃd samānarūpaḥ saṃstūyamānaḥ parameṇa varcasā

Thus honoured by all, the great king of the gods, Nahusha, seated upon Indra's own throne, resembling Indra himself in form, and praised with the highest splendour —

Verse 73 (skanda.1.15.73)

sugaṃdhadīpaiśca suvāsasā yuto'laṃkārabhogaiḥ suvirājitāṃgaḥ|| babhau tadānīṃ nahuṣo munīdraiḥ saṃstūyamāno hi tathā'mareṃdraiḥ

adorned with fragrant lamps and fine garments, his limbs resplendent with ornaments and comforts, Nahusha shone forth then, praised by the foremost of sages and the lords of the gods alike.

Verse 74 (skanda.1.15.74)

iti paramakalānvito'sau suramunivaragaṇaiśca pūjyamānaḥ|| nahuṣanṛpavaro'bhavattadānīṃ hṛdi mahatā hṛcchayenataptaḥ

Thus, though endowed with the greatest splendour and honoured by hosts of gods and sages, that excellent king Nahusha was then, in his heart, consumed by a great and burning desire.

Verse 75 (skanda.1.15.75)

||nahuṣa uvāca|| iṃdrāṇī kathamadyaiva nāyāti mama sannidhau|| tāṃ cāhvayata śīghraṃ bho mā vilaṃbitumarhatha

Nahusha said: "Why has Indrani not yet come into my presence? Summon her at once — it is not right to delay."

Verse 76 (skanda.1.15.76)

nahupasya vacaḥ śrutvā bṛhaspatirudāradhīḥ|| śacībhavanamāsādya uvāca ca savistaram

Hearing Nahusha's words, the noble-minded Brihaspati went to Shachi's palace and told her the whole matter in detail.

Verse 77 (skanda.1.15.77)

śakrasya durnimittena hyanīto nahuṣo'tra vai|| rājyārte bhāmini tvaṃ ca arddhāsanagatā bhava

"It is because of Shakra's own ill deed that Nahusha has been brought here; O lady, for the sake of the kingdom, take your place beside him upon half his throne."

Verse 78 (skanda.1.15.78)

śacī prahasya covāca bṛhaspatimakalmaṣam|| asau na paripūrṇo hi yajñaiḥ śakrāsane sthitaḥ|| ekonamaśvamedhānāṃ śataṃ kṛtamanena vai

Shachi smiled and said to the blameless Brihaspati: "This king seated upon Indra's throne is not yet complete in his sacrifices; he has performed only ninety-nine horse-sacrifices."

Verse 79 (skanda.1.15.79)

tasmānna yogyo prahasya covāca bṛhaspatimakalpaṇaṣam|| asau na paripūrṇo hi yajñaiḥ śakrāsane sthitaḥ|| avāhyavāhanenaiva atrāgatya labheta mām

"Therefore he is not fit for me" — so she said, half smiling; "only if he comes here mounted upon a vehicle that ought never to be mounted, and thus obtains me, could I become his."

Verse 80 (skanda.1.15.80)

tatheti gatvā tvarito bṛhaspatiruvāca tam|| nahuṣaṃ kāmasaṃtaptaṃ śacyoktaṃ ca yathātatham

"So be it," said Brihaspati, and he went there swiftly, and told the desire-tormented Nahusha exactly what Shachi had said.

Verse 81 (skanda.1.15.81)

tatheti matvā rājāsau nahuṣaḥ kāmamohitaḥ|| vimṛśya parayā buddhyā avāhyaṃ kiṃ praśasyate

"So be it," thought that desire-deluded king Nahusha, and he began to consider, with the greatest care, what vehicle it might be that was deemed unfit to ride.

Verse 82 (skanda.1.15.82)

sa buddhyā ca ciraṃ smṛtvā brāhmaṇāścatapasvinaḥ|| avāhyāśca bhavaṃtyasmādātmānaṃ vāhayāmyaham

Reflecting long, he recalled: "Ascetic brahmins alone are held unfit to be used as a vehicle; therefore I shall have myself carried by them."

Verse 83 (skanda.1.15.83)

dvābhyāṃ ca tasyāḥ prāptyarthamiti me hṛdi vartate|| śibikāṃ ca dadau tābhyāṃ dvijābhyāṃ kāmamohitaḥ

"Thus, borne by two brahmins, I shall win her" — this thought settled in his heart; and the desire-deluded Nahusha gave those two brahmins a palanquin to bear.

Verse 84 (skanda.1.15.84)

upaviśya tadā tasyāṃ śivabikāyāṃ samāhitaḥ|| sarpasarpeti vacanānnodayāmāsa tau tadā

Seated carefully in that palanquin, he began to urge the two of them on, crying "sarpa, sarpa" — "move, move quickly."

Verse 85 (skanda.1.15.85)

agastyaḥ śibikāvāhī tataḥ kruddho'śapannṛpam|| viprāṇāmavamaṃtā tvamunmatto'jagaro bhava

Among those bearing the palanquin was the sage Agastya himself; enraged, he cursed the king: "You who insult brahmins — become a maddened python!"

Verse 86 (skanda.1.15.86)

śāpoktimātrato rājā patito brāhmaṇasya hi|| tatraivājagaro bhūtvā vipraśāpo duratyayaḥ

By the mere utterance of that curse, the king fell, struck down by the brahmin's word; at that very instant he became a python — for a brahmin's curse cannot be averted.

Verse 87 (skanda.1.15.87)

yathā hi nahuṣo jātastathā sarve'pi tādṛśāḥ|| viprāṇāmavamānena patinti niraye'śucau

As Nahusha met this fate, so too do all such men, through contempt for brahmins, fall into the impure hell.

Verse 88 (skanda.1.15.88)

tasmāsarvaprayatnena padaṃ prāpya vicakṣaṇaiḥ|| apramattairnarairbhāvyamihāmutra ca labdhaye

Therefore discerning and vigilant men should, by every effort, attain their proper place and hold to it, both in this world and the next.

Verse 89 (skanda.1.15.89)

tathaiva nahuṣaḥ sarppo jātoraṇye mahābhaye|| evaṃ caivābhavattatra devaloke hyarājakam

Thus Nahusha, become a serpent, dwelt in that most terrible forest; and once again the world of the gods fell into anarchy.

Verse 90 (skanda.1.15.90)

tathaiva te surāḥ sarve vismayāviṣṭacetasaḥ|| aho bata mahatkaṣṭaṃ prāptaṃ rājñā hyanena vai

All the gods, their hearts filled with astonishment, said: "Ah, what great misfortune has befallen this king!"

Verse 91 (skanda.1.15.91)

na martya loko na svargo jāto hyasya durātmanaḥ|| satāmavajñayā sadyaḥ sukṛtaṃ dagdhameva hi

"That evil-souled one attained neither the world of mortals nor heaven; through his contempt for the righteous, all his merit was instantly consumed."

Verse 92 (skanda.1.15.92)

yājñiko hyaparo loke kathyatāṃ ca mahāmune|| tadovāca mahātejā nārado munisattamaḥ

"O great sage, tell us now of some other sacrificer in this world" — then the most radiant of sages, Narada, said —

Verse 93 (skanda.1.15.93)

yayātiṃ ca mahābhāgā ānayadhvaṃ tvarānvitāḥ|| devadūtāstu vai tūrṇaṃ yayātiṃ drutamānayan

"O most fortunate ones, go at once and bring Yayati here" — then the messengers of the gods swiftly brought Yayati.

Verse 94 (skanda.1.15.94)

vimānamāruhya tadā mahātmā yayau divaṃ devadūtaiḥ sametaḥ|| puraskṛto devavaraistadānīṃ tathoragairyakṣagaṃdharvasiddhaiḥ

That great-souled one, mounting a celestial car, went to heaven together with the messengers of the gods, led forward by the foremost deities, together with serpents, yakshas, gandharvas and siddhas.

Verse 95 (skanda.1.15.95)

āyātaḥ so'marāvatyāṃ tridaśairabhitoṣitaḥ|| iṃdrāsane copaviṣṭo babhāṣe ca sa satvaram

He arrived in Amaravati and was honoured by the gods; and, seated upon Indra's throne, he spoke at once —

Verse 96 (skanda.1.15.96)

nāradenaivamuktastu tvaṃ rājā yājñiko hyasi|| satāmavajñayā prāpto nahuṣo daṃdaśūkatām

Narada said to him: "You are a king who has performed many sacrifices; it was through contempt for the righteous that Nahusha attained the state of a serpent."

Verse 97 (skanda.1.15.97)

ye prāpnuvaṃti dharmiṣṭhā daivena paramaṃ padam|| prāktanenaiva mūḍhāste na paśyaṃti śubhāśubham

"Those righteous men who by the working of fate attain the supreme state — even among them, some remain so deluded by their past impressions that they cannot distinguish good from evil —"

Verse 98 (skanda.1.15.98)

pataṃti narake ghore stabdhā vai nātra saṃśayaḥ

"and, stupefied by pride, they fall into terrible hell — of this there is no doubt."

Verse 99 (skanda.1.15.99)

||yayātiruvāca|| yaiḥ kṛtaṃ puṇyaṃ teṣāṃ vighnaḥ prajāyate|| alpakatvena devarṣe viddhi sarvaṃ paraṃ mama

Yayati said: "It is precisely for those who have earned merit that obstacles also arise; O divine sage, know that all of mine is but the smallest measure — this alone is the highest truth."

Verse 100 (skanda.1.15.100)

mahādānāni dattāni annadānayutāni ca|| godānāni bahūnyeva bhūmidānayutāni ca

"Great gifts have I given, together with gifts of food; many gifts of cows and of land have I also given —"

Verse 101 (skanda.1.15.101)

tathaiva sarvāṇyapi cottamāni dānāni coktāni manīṣibhiryadā|| etāni sarvāṇi mayā tadaiva dattāni kāle ca mahāvidhānataḥ

"and likewise all the excellent gifts spoken of by the wise, all of these have I given, each in its proper time, with the greatest ceremony."

Verse 102 (skanda.1.15.102)

yajñairiṣṭaṃ vājapeyātirātrairjyotiṣṭomai rājasūyādibhiśca|| śāstraproktairaśvamedhādibhiśca yūpaireṣālaṃkṛtā bhūḥ samaṃtāt

"With Vajapeya, Atiratra, Jyotishtoma, Rajasuya and other sacrifices have I worshipped; and with the sacrificial posts of Ashvamedha and other rites enjoined by scripture, this whole earth stands adorned on every side."

Verse 103 (skanda.1.15.103)

devadevo jagannātha iṣṭo yajñairanekaśaḥ|| gālavāya pure dattā kanyā tveṣā ca mādhavī

"The god of gods, the Lord of the universe, have I worshipped through many sacrifices; and this maiden Madhavi I gave in gift to Galava, in the city."

Verse 104 (skanda.1.15.104)

patnītvena caturbhyaśca dattāḥ kanyā mune tadā|| gālavasya gurorarthe viśvāmitrasya dhīmataḥ

"O sage, this maiden was given as wife to four men in turn, for the sake of Galava, the disciple of the wise Vishvamitra, his guru."

Verse 105 (skanda.1.15.105)

evaṃ bhūtānyanekāni sukṛtāni mayā purā|| mahāṃti ca bahūnyeva tāni vaktuṃ na pāryate

"Thus have I performed many such great and meritorious deeds in times past; they are so numerous that they cannot all be told."

Verse 106 (skanda.1.15.106)

bhūyaḥ pṛṣṭaḥ sarvadevaiḥ sa rājā kṛtaṃ sarvaṃ guptameva yathārtham|| vijñātumicchāma yathārthatopi sarve vayaṃ śrotukāmā yayāte

All the gods asked the king once more: "Whatever you have done in truth, even that which was done in secret — this too we wish to know; O Yayati, all of us are eager to hear it."

Verse 107 (skanda.1.15.107)

vaco niśamya devānāṃ yayātiramitadyutiḥ|| kathayāmāsa tatsarvaṃ puṇyaśeṣaṃ yathārthataḥ

Hearing these words of the gods, the boundlessly radiant Yayati then told them, in all truth, of the merit that yet remained to him.

Verse 108 (skanda.1.15.108)

kathitaṃ sarvametacca niḥśeṣaṃ vyāsavattadā|| svapuṇyakathanenaiva yayātirapatadbhuvi

He recounted all of this in full, at length, as fully as Vyasa himself might have; and by thus boasting of his own merit, Yayati fell down to the earth.

Verse 109 (skanda.1.15.109)

tatkṣaṇādeva sarveṣāṃ surāṇāṃ tatra paśyatām|| evameva tathā jātamarājakamataṃdritam

Before the eyes of all the gods present there, at that very instant, heaven once again fell into that same state of anarchy.

Verse 110 (skanda.1.15.110)

anyo na dṛśyate loke yājñiko yo hi tatra vai|| śakrāsane'bhiṣe kāryaṃ śrūyatāṃ hi dvijottamāḥ

No other sacrificer could be found anywhere in the world; hear now, O best of brahmins, how the consecration of Indra's throne was at last accomplished.

Verse 111 (skanda.1.15.111)

sarve surāśca ṛṣayo'tha mahāphaṇīṃdrā gandharvayakṣakhagacāraṇakiṃnarāśca|| vidyādharāḥ suragaṇāpsarasāṃ gaṇāśca ciṃtāparāḥ samabhavanmanujāstathaiva

All the gods and sages, the great lords of the serpents, the gandharvas, yakshas, birds, charanas and kinnaras, the vidyadharas, the hosts of gods and troupes of apsaras — all of them fell into deep anxiety, and mortal men likewise.
