Chapter 25All chaptersChapter 27

Verse 1 (skanda.1.26.1)

||lomaśa uvāca|| atha te parvataśreṣṭhā mervādyā jātasaṃbhramāḥ|| ūcuste caikapadyena himavaṃtaṃ mahāgirim

Lomasha said: Then those foremost of mountains, Meru and the rest, filled with eager excitement, spoke together with one voice to the great mountain Himavan.

Verse 2 (skanda.1.26.2)

||parvatā ūcuḥ|| kanyādānaṃ kriyatāṃ cādya śaila śrīmāñchambhurbhāgyataste'dya labdhaḥ|| hṛnmadhye vai nātra kāryo vimarśastasmādeṣā dīyatāmīśvarāya

The mountains said: "Let the giving of your daughter be done this very day, O mountain; by good fortune you have today won resplendent Shambhu. There is no need for deliberation in your heart over this; therefore let her be given to Ishvara at once."

Verse 3 (skanda.1.26.3)

tacchrutvā vacanaṃ teṣāṃ suhṛdāṃ vai himālayaḥ|| samyaksaṃkalpamakarodbrahmamā noditastadā|| imāṃ kanyāṃ tubhyamahaṃ dadāmi parameśvara

Hearing these words of his friends, Himalaya, urged on then by Brahma, duly made his resolve: "This daughter of mine, O supreme lord, I now give to you."

Verse 4 (skanda.1.26.4)

bhāryārthaṃ pratigṛhṇīṣvamaṃtreṇānena dattavān|| asmai rudrāya mahate devadavāya śaṃbhava|| kanyā dattā maheśāya girīṃdreṇa mahātmanā

"Accept her as your wife" — with this mantra he gave her away. Thus the daughter was given by that great-souled lord of mountains to great Rudra, to the god of gods, to Shambhu, to Mahesha.

Verse 5 (skanda.1.26.5)

vedyāṃ ca bahirānītau daṃpatīva kamalekṣaṇau|| upaveśitau bahirvedyāṃ pārvatīparameśvarau

Brought outside to the altar, that lotus-eyed couple, Parvati and Parameshvara, were seated together there beyond the altar.

Verse 6 (skanda.1.26.6)

ācāryeṇātha tatraiva kaśyapena mahātmanā|| āhvānaṃ havanārthāya kṛtamagnestadā dvijāḥ

Then, right there, O brahmins, the great-souled preceptor Kashyapa performed the invocation of Agni for the fire offering.

Verse 7 (skanda.1.26.7)

brahmā brahmāsanagato babhūva śivasannidhau|| pravartamāne havana ṛṣayaśca vicakṣaṇāḥ

Brahma took his seat as officiating priest in Shiva's presence; and as the fire offering proceeded, the discerning sages —

Verse 8 (skanda.1.26.8)

ūcuḥ parasparaṃ tatra nānādarśanavedinaḥ|| vedavādaratāḥ kecidavadansaṃmatena vai

— versed in various schools of philosophy, fell to disputing among themselves there; some, devoted to Vedic argument, spoke according to their own settled views.

Verse 9 (skanda.1.26.9)

evameva na cāpyevamevameva na cānyathā|| kāryameva na vā kāryaṃ kāryākāryaṃ tathā pare

"It is just so, and not otherwise; exactly this way, and no other." "This is to be done, or is not to be done." "It is both to be done and not to be done" — so said still others.

Verse 10 (skanda.1.26.10)

ityevaṃ bruvatāṃ śabdaḥ śrūyate śivasannidhau|| svakīyaṃ matamāsthāya hyabruvaṃste parasparam|| tattvajñānavihīnāste kevalaṃ vedabuddhayaḥ

Thus, as they spoke, the sound of their arguing was heard there in Shiva's very presence; clinging each to his own opinion, they disputed among themselves — devoid of true knowledge of reality, their understanding confined to mere Vedic argument.

Verse 11 (skanda.1.26.11)

teṣāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā parasparajayaiṣiṇām|| prahasya nārado vākyamuvāca śivasannidhau

Hearing these words of theirs, each intent on getting the better of the other, Narada laughed and spoke these words there in Shiva's presence.

Verse 12 (skanda.1.26.12)

yūyaṃ sarve vādinaśca vedavādaratāstathā|| maunamāsthāya bhoviprā hṛdi kṛtya sadāśivam

"All of you are mere disputants, given over to Vedic argument; O brahmins, take up silence instead, and hold Sadashiva within your hearts."

Verse 13 (skanda.1.26.13)

ātmānaṃ paramātmānaṃ parāṇāṃ paramaṃ ca tat|| yenedaṃ kāritaṃ viśvaṃ yataḥ sarvaṃ pravarttate|| yasminnilīyate viśvaṃ tasmai sarvātmane namaḥ

"The Self, the supreme Self, highest of the high, by whom this universe was made, from whom everything proceeds, in whom the universe is dissolved — salutation to him, the Self of all!

Verse 14 (skanda.1.26.14)

so'yamāste'dhunā gehe parvateṃdrasya bho dvijāḥ|| mukhādasyaiva saṃjātāḥ sarve yūyaṃ vicakṣaṇāḥ

O brahmins, that very one sits now in the house of the lord of mountains; and all of you discerning ones were born from his very mouth."

Verse 15 (skanda.1.26.15)

evamuktāstadā tena nāradena dvijottamāḥ|| upadeśakarairvākyairbodhitāste dvijottamāḥ

Thus addressed by Narada, those best of brahmins, awakened by his instructive words, fell silent at once.

Verse 16 (skanda.1.26.16)

varttamāne ca yajñe ca brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ|| dadarśa caraṇau devyā nakheṃduṃ ca manoharam

While the sacrifice was in progress, Brahma, grandfather of the worlds, beheld the goddess's feet, and her lovely nails, radiant as the moon.

Verse 17 (skanda.1.26.17)

darśanātskhalitaḥ sadyo babhūvāṃbujasaṃbhavaḥ|| madanena samāviṣṭo vīryaṃ ca prācyavadbhuvi

At that very sight, the lotus-born one at once faltered; overcome by Madana, his seed fell to the earth.

Verse 18 (skanda.1.26.18)

retasā kṣaramāṇena lajjito'bhūtpitāmahaḥ|| caraṇābhyāṃ mamarddātha mahadgopyaṃ duratyayam

Ashamed at the flowing of his seed, the grandfather crushed it beneath his own feet — a great and secret matter, hard indeed to overcome.

Verse 19 (skanda.1.26.19)

bahavaścarṣayo jātā vālakhilyāḥ sahasraśaḥ|| upatasthustadā sarvetātatāteti cābruvan

From it were born many sages, the Valakhilyas, by the thousand; and all of them then drew near, crying out, "Father! Father!"

Verse 20 (skanda.1.26.20)

nāradena tadoktāste vālakhilyāḥ prakopinā|| gacchaṃtu baṭavo yūyaṃ parvataṃ gaṃdhamādanam

Then, growing angry, Narada said to those Valakhilyas: "Go, all you young students, to the mountain Gandhamadana."

Verse 21 (skanda.1.26.21)

na sthātavyaṃ bhavadbhiśca bhavatāṃ na prayojanam|| ityevamuktāste sarve vālakhilyāśca parvatam|| nāradena samādiṣṭā yayuḥ sarve tvarānvitāḥ

"You must not stay here; you have no purpose here." Thus addressed, all those Valakhilyas, instructed so by Narada, at once hastened away to the mountain.

Verse 22 (skanda.1.26.22)

nāradena tato brahmā'śvāsito vacanaiḥ śubhaiḥ|| tāvacca havanaṃ pūrṇaṃ jātaṃ tasya mahātmanaḥ

Then Narada comforted Brahma with kindly words; and by that time the fire offering of that great-souled one had also been completed.

Verse 23 (skanda.1.26.23)

maheśasya tathā viprāḥ śāṃtipāṭhaparā babhuḥ|| brahmaghoṣeṇa mahatā vyāpta māsīddigaṃtaram

Then the brahmins, for Mahesha's sake, took up the chanting of peace-verses; and the far horizons were filled with the great resounding of the Vedic chant.

Verse 24 (skanda.1.26.24)

tato nīrājito devo devapatnībhiruttamaḥ|| tathaiva ṛṣipatnībhirarcitaḥ pūjitastathā

Then that most excellent god had lamps waved before him by the wives of the gods; and likewise he was honoured and worshipped by the wives of the sages as well.

Verse 25 (skanda.1.26.25)

tathā girīndrasya manoramāḥ śubhā nīrājayāmāsurathaiva yoṣitaḥ|| gītaiḥ sugītajñaviśāradāśca tathaiva cānye stutibhirmaharṣayaḥ

And likewise the lovely, auspicious women of the lord of mountains, skilled in sweet song, waved lamps before him; and other great sages too praised him with hymns of adoration.

Verse 26 (skanda.1.26.26)

ratnāni ca mahārhāṇi dadau tebhyo mahāmanāḥ|| himālayo mahāśailaḥ saṃhṛṣṭaḥ paritoṣayan

Himalaya, that great and magnanimous mountain, filled with delight, gave them precious jewels of the highest worth, gratifying them all.

Verse 27 (skanda.1.26.27)

babhau tadānīṃ surasiddhasaṃghairvedyāṃ sthito'sau sakalatrako vibhuḥ|| sarvairupetī nijapārṣadairgaṇaiḥ prahṛṣṭacetā jagadekasundarāḥ

At that moment he shone forth, that lord together with his consort, standing upon the altar amid the hosts of gods and siddhas; accompanied by all his own attendants and ganas, his heart filled with delight, the sole beauty of the entire universe.

Verse 28 (skanda.1.26.28)

etasminnaṃtare tatra brahmaviṣṇupurogamāḥ|| ṛṣigaṃdharvayakṣāśca yenye tatra samāgatāḥ

Meanwhile there, with Brahma and Vishnu at their head, the sages, gandharvas, yakshas, and all the others who had gathered —

Verse 29 (skanda.1.26.29)

sarvānsamabhyarcya tadā mahātmā mahāngirīśaḥ parameṇa varcasā|| sadratnavastrābharaṇāni samyagdadau ca tāmbūlasugandhavāryapi

— were then all honoured by that great-souled and mighty lord of mountains, with the greatest splendour, who duly bestowed upon them fine jewels, garments and ornaments, along with betel leaf, fragrant offerings, and water.

Verse 30 (skanda.1.26.30)

tadā śivaṃ puraskṛtyābhyava jahruḥ sureśvarāḥ|| tathā sarve militvā tu aikapadyena moditāḥ

Then, placing Shiva at their head, the lords of the gods partook of the feast; and all of them together, gathered as one, rejoiced in delight.

Verse 31 (skanda.1.26.31)

paṃktībhūtāśca bubhurliṃginā śrṛṃgiṇā saha|| kecidgaṇāḥ pṛthagbhūtā nānāhāsyarasairvibhum

Seated together in rows, they feasted alongside the Linga-bearer, the horned one; and some of the ganas, apart from the rest, entertained the lord with all manner of comic diversions.

Verse 32 (skanda.1.26.32)

atoṣayannāradādyā anekālīkasaṃyutāḥ|| tathā caṇḍīgaṇāḥ sarve babhujuḥ kṛtabhājanāḥ

Narada and the others, full of playful jests, delighted everyone; and likewise all of Chandi's ganas feasted too, their vessels duly laid out.

Verse 33 (skanda.1.26.33)

vaitālāḥ kṣetrapālāśca bubhujuḥ kṛtabhājanāḥ|| śākinī ḍākinī caiva yakṣiṇyo mātṛkādayaḥ

The Vetalas and Kshetrapalas feasted too, their vessels laid ready; and Shakini, Dakini, the yakshinis, the Mother goddesses, and others besides.

Verse 34 (skanda.1.26.34)

yoginyo'tha catuḥ ṣaṣṭiryogino hi tathā pare|| daśa koṭyo gaṇānāṃ ca koṭyekā ca mahātmanām

The sixty-four yoginis, and likewise the other yogis as well; ten crores of ganas, and one crore of great souls, were all present there.

Verse 35 (skanda.1.26.35)

evaṃ tu ṛṣayaḥ sarve tathānaye vibudhādayaḥ|| yogino hi mayā cānye kathitāḥ pūrvameva hi

Thus were present all the sages, and likewise the gods and others; and the yogis and the rest, of these too I have already told you before.

Verse 36 (skanda.1.26.36)

yoginyaścaiva kathitāstāsāṃ bhakṣyaṃ vadāmi vaḥ|| khaḍgānāṃ kecidānīya kravyaṃ pavitrameva ca

And the yoginis too have already been described; now let me tell you of their fare. Some brought forth flesh cut by swords, and pure meat besides.

Verse 37 (skanda.1.26.37)

bhuṃjaṃti cāsthisaṃyuktaṃ tathāṃtrāṇi bubhukṣitāḥ|| ānīya kecicchīrṣāṇi mahiṣāṇāṃ gurūṇi ca

Ravenous, they devoured flesh together with bones, and entrails too; and some of them brought the heavy heads of buffaloes to feast upon.

Verse 38 (skanda.1.26.38)

tathā kecinnṛtyamānāstadānīṃ rorūyyamāṇāḥ pramathāścaiva cānye|| kecittūṣṇīmāsthitā rudrarūpāḥ parecānyā~llokamānāstathaiva

And some of the pramathas and other beings, at that time, danced and howled aloud; some, bearing forms like Rudra's own, sat in silence; while still others simply looked on at the gathering in the same way.

Verse 39 (skanda.1.26.39)

yoginīcakramadhyastho bhairavo hi nanarta ca|| tathānye bhūtavetālā māmetyevaṃ pralāpinaḥ

Bhairava, standing in the very midst of the circle of yoginis, danced there; and likewise other bhutas and vetalas babbled on, "Come to me! Come to me!"

Verse 40 (skanda.1.26.40)

evaṃ teṣāmuddhavaṃ hi nirikṣya madhusūdanaḥ|| uvāca prahasanvākyaṃ śaṃkaraṃ lokaśaṃkaram

Beholding this uproar of theirs, Madhusudana laughed and spoke these words to Shankara, the bringer of blessing to the world.

Verse 41 (skanda.1.26.41)

etāngaṇānvāraya bho atra mattāṃśca saṃprati|| asminkāle ca yatkāryaṃ sarvaistatkāryame va ca

"Restrain these ganas of yours, O lord, who are now grown intoxicated; whatever is fitting to be done at this hour should be done by all alike."

Verse 42 (skanda.1.26.42)

pāṃḍityena mahādeva tasmādetānnivāraya|| tacchrutvā bhagavānrudro vīrabhadramuvāca ha

"Therefore, O Mahadeva, with your good judgment, restrain them." Hearing this, the blessed Rudra then spoke to Virabhadra.

Verse 43 (skanda.1.26.43)

||rudra uvāca|| vārayasva pramattāṃśca kṣībāṃścaiva viśeṣataḥ|| tenokto vīrabhadraśca śaṃbhunā parameṣṭhinā

Rudra said: "Restrain those who are unruly, and especially those who are drunk." Thus instructed by Shambhu, the supreme lord, Virabhadra —

Verse 44 (skanda.1.26.44)

ājñāpitāḥ pramattāśca vīrabhadreṇa dhīmatā|| pramathā vāritāstena tūṣṇīmāśritya te sthitāḥ

— the wise Virabhadra commanded the unruly ones; and, restrained by him, the pramathas then fell silent and stood still.

Verse 45 (skanda.1.26.45)

niścalā yoginīmadhye bhūtapramathaguhyakāḥ|| śākinyo yātudhānāśca kūṣmāṃḍāḥ kopikarpaṭāḥ

Motionless there amid the yoginis stood the bhutas, pramathas, and guhyakas; the shakinis, yatudhanas, kushmandas, and kopikarpatas.

Verse 46 (skanda.1.26.46)

tathānye bhūtavetālāḥ kṣetrapālāśca bhairavāḥ|| sarve śāṃtāḥ pramattāśca babhūvuḥ pramathādayaḥ

And likewise the other bhutas, vetalas, kshetrapalas, and Bhairavas; all of them, the once-unruly pramathas and the rest, grew calm and still.

Verse 47 (skanda.1.26.47)

evaṃ vistārasaṃyuktaṃ kṛtamudvahanaṃ tadā|| himādriṇā paraṃ viprāḥ sumaṃgalyaṃ suśobhanam

Thus, O brahmins, was the wedding performed then by the Himalaya, with the greatest elaboration, most auspicious and resplendent.

Verse 48 (skanda.1.26.48)

catvāro divasā jātāḥ paripūrṇena cetasā|| himādriṇā kṛtā pūjā devadevasya śūlinaḥ

Four days passed by, hearts full of contentment; and the Himalaya performed worship of the trident-bearer, the god of gods.

Verse 49 (skanda.1.26.49)

vastrālaṃkārābharaṇai ratnairuccāvacaistataḥ|| pūjayitvā mahādevaṃ viṣṇorvacanaparo'bhavat

With garments, ornaments, and jewels both great and small, having thus worshipped Mahadeva, he then turned his attention to what Vishnu had counselled.

Verse 50 (skanda.1.26.50)

lakṣmīsametaṃ viṣṇuṃ ca vastrālaṃkaraṇaiḥ śubhaiḥ|| pūjayāmāsa himavāṃstathā brahmāṇameva ca

Himavan worshipped Vishnu, together with Lakshmi, with auspicious garments and ornaments; and in the same way he worshipped Brahma as well.

Verse 51 (skanda.1.26.51)

iṃdraṃ purodhasā sārddhamiṃdrāṇyā sahitaṃ vibhum|| tathaiva lokapālāṃśca pūjayitvā pṛthakpṛthak

He worshipped mighty Indra as well, together with the family priest and Indrani; and likewise he worshipped the guardians of the world, each one in turn.

Verse 52 (skanda.1.26.52)

tathaiva pūjitā caṃḍī bhūtapramathaguhyakaiḥ|| vastrālaṃkaraṇaiścaiva ratnairnānāvidhairapi|| ye cānya āgatāstatra te ca sarve prapūjitāḥ

And likewise Chandi too, together with the bhutas, pramathas, and guhyakas, was worshipped with garments, ornaments, and manifold jewels; and whoever else had come there was likewise duly honoured.

Verse 53 (skanda.1.26.53)

evaṃ tadānīṃ pratipūjitāśca devāśca sarve ṛṣayaśca yakṣāḥ|| gaṃdharvavidyādharasiddhacāraṇāstathaiva marttyāpsarasāṃ gaṇāśca

Thus at that time all the gods, all the sages, and the yakshas were duly honoured; and likewise the gandharvas, vidyadharas, siddhas, and charanas, together with the multitudes of mortals and apsaras.
