The Birth of Parvati
Verse 1 (skanda.1.57.1)
॥नारद उवाच॥ एवं विप्रकृता देवा महेंद्रसहितास्तदा॥ ययुः स्वायंभुवं दाम मर्करूपमुपाश्रिताः
nārada uvāca evaṁ viprakṛtā devā maheṁdrasahitāstadā yayuḥ svāyaṁbhuvaṁ dāma markarūpamupāśritāḥ
Narada said: Thus wronged, the gods, together with Mahendra, then went, still clothed in monkey-form, to the abode of Svayambhu.
Verse 2 (skanda.1.57.2)
ततश्च विस्मितो ब्रह्मा प्राह तान्सुरपुंगवान्॥ स्वरूपेणेह तिष्ठध्वं नात्र वस्तारकाद्भयम्
tataśca vismito brahmā prāha tānsurapuṁgavān svarūpeṇeha tiṣṭhadhvaṁ nātra vastārakādbhayam
Then Brahma, astonished, said to those foremost of gods: 'Remain here in your own true forms; here there is no fear for you from Taraka.'
Verse 3 (skanda.1.57.3)
ततो देवाः स्वरूपस्थाः प्रम्लानवदनांबुजाः॥ तुष्टुवुः प्रणताः सर्वे पितरं पुत्रका यथा
tato devāḥ svarūpasthāḥ pramlānavadanāṁbujāḥ tuṣṭuvuḥ praṇatāḥ sarve pitaraṁ putrakā yathā
Then the gods, restored to their own forms, their lotus-faces withered with sorrow, all bowed and praised him, as children praise their father.
Verse 4 (skanda.1.57.4)
नमो जगत्प्रसूत्यै ते हेतवे पालकाय च॥ संहर्त्रे च नमस्तुभ्यं तिस्रोऽवस्थास्तव प्रभो
namo jagatprasūtyai te hetave pālakāya ca saṁhartre ca namastubhyaṁ tisro'vasthāstava prabho
'Homage to you, the origin of the world's birth, and its sustainer; homage too to you, the destroyer — O Lord, yours are the three states.'
Verse 5 (skanda.1.57.5)
त्वमपः प्रथमं सृष्ट्वा तासु वीर्यमवासृजः॥ तदण्डमभवद्धैमं यस्मिल्लोकाश्चराचराः
tvamapaḥ prathamaṁ sṛṣṭvā tāsu vīryamavāsṛjaḥ tadaṇḍamabhavaddhaimaṁ yasmillokāścarācarāḥ
'Having first created the waters, you cast your seed into them; from that arose the golden egg, in which are all the worlds, moving and unmoving.'
Verse 6 (skanda.1.57.6)
वेदेष्वाहुर्विराड्रूपं त्वामेकरूपमीदृशम्॥ पातालं पादमूलं च पार्ष्णिपादे रसातलम्
vedeṣvāhurvirāḍrūpaṁ tvāmekarūpamīdṛśam pātālaṁ pādamūlaṁ ca pārṣṇipāde rasātalam
'In the Vedas they call you, in this single form, the Cosmic Person of such a kind: Patala is the sole of your foot, and Rasatala the heel;'
Verse 7 (skanda.1.57.7)
महातलं चास्य गुल्फौ जंघे चापि तलातलम्॥ सुतलं जानुनी चास्य ऊरू च वितलातले
mahātalaṁ cāsya gulphau jaṁghe cāpi talātalam sutalaṁ jānunī cāsya ūrū ca vitalātale
'Mahatala are his ankles, and Talatala his shanks; Sutala his knees, and Vitala and Atala his thighs;'
Verse 8 (skanda.1.57.8)
महीतलं च जघनं नाभिश्चास्य नभस्तलम्॥ ज्योतिः पदमुरः स्थानं स्वर्लोको बाहुरुच्यते
mahītalaṁ ca jaghanaṁ nābhiścāsya nabhastalam jyotiḥ padamuraḥ sthānaṁ svarloko bāhurucyate
'the earth is his hip, and the vault of the sky his navel; Jyotiloka is the place of his chest, and Svarloka is called his arm;'
Verse 9 (skanda.1.57.9)
ग्रीवा महश्चवदनं जनलोकः प्रकीर्त्यते॥ ललाटं च तपोलोकः शीर्ष सत्यमुदाहृतम्
grīvā mahaścavadanaṁ janalokaḥ prakīrtyate lalāṭaṁ ca tapolokaḥ śīrṣa satyamudāhṛtam
'Maharloka is proclaimed his neck, and Janaloka his face; Tapoloka is his forehead, and Satyaloka is declared his head.'
Verse 10 (skanda.1.57.10)
चन्द्रसूर्यौ च नयने दिशः श्रोत्रे नासिकाश्विनौ॥ आत्मानं ब्रह्मरंध्रस्थमाहुस्त्वां वेदवादिनः
candrasūryau ca nayane diśaḥ śrotre nāsikāśvinau ātmānaṁ brahmaraṁdhrasthamāhustvāṁ vedavādinaḥ
'The moon and sun are his two eyes, the quarters his ears, the Ashvins his nostrils; the speakers of the Veda declare you, the Self, to dwell at the aperture of Brahma.'
Verse 11 (skanda.1.57.11)
एवं ये ते विराड्रूपं संस्मरंत उपासते॥ जन्मबन्धविनिर्मुक्ता यांति त्वां परमं पदम्
evaṁ ye te virāḍrūpaṁ saṁsmaraṁta upāsate janmabandhavinirmuktā yāṁti tvāṁ paramaṁ padam
'Those who thus remember and worship your cosmic form, freed from the bondage of birth, attain to your supreme abode.'
Verse 12 (skanda.1.57.12)
एवं स्थूलं प्राणिमध्यं च शूक्ष्मं भावेभावे भावितं त्वां गृणंति॥ सर्वत्रस्थं त्वामतः प्राहुर्वेदास्तस्मै तुभ्यं पदम्ज इद्विधेम
evaṁ sthūlaṁ prāṇimadhyaṁ ca śūkṣmaṁ bhāvebhāve bhāvitaṁ tvāṁ gṛṇaṁti sarvatrasthaṁ tvāmataḥ prāhurvedāstasmai tubhyaṁ padamja idvidhema
'Thus, gross, or intermediate, or most subtle, meditated upon in every state of being, they praise you; and since the Vedas declare you to abide everywhere, to that state of yours we offer this worship.'
Verse 13 (skanda.1.57.13)
एवं स्तुतो विरंचिस्तु कृपयाभिपरिप्लुतः॥ जानन्नपि तदा प्राह तेषामाश्वासहेतवे
evaṁ stuto viraṁcistu kṛpayābhipariplutaḥ jānannapi tadā prāha teṣāmāśvāsahetave
Thus praised, Virinchi, overwhelmed with compassion, though he already knew the cause, spoke then, in order to console them —
Verse 14 (skanda.1.57.14)
सर्वे भवन्तो दुःखार्ताः परिम्लानमुखांबुजाः॥ भ्रष्टायुदास्तथाऽकस्माद्भ्रष्टा भरणवाससः
sarve bhavanto duḥkhārtāḥ parimlānamukhāṁbujāḥ bhraṣṭāyudāstathā'kasmādbhraṣṭā bharaṇavāsasaḥ
'All of you are afflicted with sorrow, your lotus-faces withered; you have suddenly lost your weapons, and likewise your ornaments and garments.'
Verse 15 (skanda.1.57.15)
ममैवयं कृतिर्देवा भवतां यद्वडम्बना॥ यद्वैराजशरीरे मे भवन्तो बाहुसंज्ञकाः
mamaivayaṁ kṛtirdevā bhavatāṁ yadvaḍambanā yadvairājaśarīre me bhavanto bāhusaṁjñakāḥ
'O gods, this is indeed my own doing, that you have been made a mockery; for in my cosmic body, you are known as the arms.'
Verse 16 (skanda.1.57.16)
यद्यद्विभूतिमत्सत्त्वं धार्मिकं चोर्जितं महत्॥ तत्रासीद्बाहुनाशो मे बाहुस्थाने च ते मम
yadyadvibhūtimatsattvaṁ dhārmikaṁ corjitaṁ mahat tatrāsīdbāhunāśo me bāhusthāne ca te mama
'Whatever being possessed of glory, righteous and mighty, exists — there was the destruction of my arm; and you occupy the place of my arms.'
Verse 17 (skanda.1.57.17)
तन्नूनं मम भग्नौ च बाहू तेन दुरात्मना॥ येन चोपहृतं देवास्तन्ममाख्यातु मर्हथ
tannūnaṁ mama bhagnau ca bāhū tena durātmanā yena copahṛtaṁ devāstanmamākhyātu marhatha
'It must be, then, that both my arms have been broken by that evil one; tell me, O gods — by whom this harm was done to you — you ought to relate it.'
Verse 18 (skanda.1.57.18)
॥देवा ऊचुः॥ योऽसौ वज्रांगतनयस्त्वया दत्तवरः प्रभो॥ भृशं विप्रकृतास्तेन तत्त्वं जानासि तत्त्वतः
devā ūcuḥ yo'sau vajrāṁgatanayastvayā dattavaraḥ prabho bhṛśaṁ viprakṛtāstena tattvaṁ jānāsi tattvataḥ
The gods said: 'That very son of Vajranga, O Lord, to whom you granted a boon — by him we have been sorely wronged; you know the truth of it in full.'
Verse 19 (skanda.1.57.19)
यत्तन्महीसमुद्रस्य तटं शार्विकतीर्थकम्॥ तदाक्रम्य कृतं तेन मरुभूमिसमं प्रभोः
yattanmahīsamudrasya taṭaṁ śārvikatīrthakam tadākramya kṛtaṁ tena marubhūmisamaṁ prabhoḥ
'That shore of the great ocean where the Sharvika sacred site once stood — he has seized it and made it, O Lord, like a barren desert.'
Verse 20 (skanda.1.57.20)
ऋद्धयः सर्वदेवानां गृहीतास्तेन सर्वतः॥ महाभूतस्वरूपेण स एव च जगत्पतिः
ṛddhayaḥ sarvadevānāṁ gṛhītāstena sarvataḥ mahābhūtasvarūpeṇa sa eva ca jagatpatiḥ
'The prosperities of all the gods have been seized by him from every side; and, having taken the very form of the great elements, he now sets himself up as the lord of the world.'
Verse 21 (skanda.1.57.21)
चंद्रसूर्यौ ग्रहास्तारा यच्चान्यद्देवपक्षतः॥ तच्च सर्वं निराकृत्य स्थापितो दैत्यपक्षकः
caṁdrasūryau grahāstārā yaccānyaddevapakṣataḥ tacca sarvaṁ nirākṛtya sthāpito daityapakṣakaḥ
'The moon, sun, planets, stars, and whatever else belonged to the party of the gods — all this he has cast aside, and set up the demons in its place.'
Verse 22 (skanda.1.57.22)
वयं च विधृता स्तेन बहूपहसितास्तथा॥ प्रसादान्मुक्ताश्च कथंचिदिव कष्टतः
vayaṁ ca vidhṛtā stena bahūpahasitāstathā prasādānmuktāśca kathaṁcidiva kaṣṭataḥ
'We were held captive by him, and greatly mocked besides; and by his mere grace we were released, somehow, with great difficulty.'
Verse 23 (skanda.1.57.23)
तद्वयं शरणं प्राप्ताः पीडिताः क्षुत्तृषार्दिताः॥ धर्मरक्षा कराश्चेति संचिंत्य त्रातुमर्हसि
tadvayaṁ śaraṇaṁ prāptāḥ pīḍitāḥ kṣuttṛṣārditāḥ dharmarakṣā karāśceti saṁciṁtya trātumarhasi
'So we have come to you for refuge, afflicted, tormented by hunger and thirst; thinking you the protector of dharma, you ought to save us.'
Verse 24 (skanda.1.57.24)
इत्युक्तः स्वात्मभूर्देवः सुरैर्दैत्यविचेष्टितम्॥ सुरानुवाच भगवानतः संचिंत्य तत्त्वतः
ityuktaḥ svātmabhūrdevaḥ surairdaityaviceṣṭitam surānuvāca bhagavānataḥ saṁciṁtya tattvataḥ
Thus told by the gods of the demon's doings, the self-born god, having reflected on it in full truth, then spoke to the gods —
Verse 25 (skanda.1.57.25)
अवध्यस्तारको दैत्यः सर्वैरपि सुरासुरैः॥ यस्य वध्यश्च नाद्यापि स जातो भगवान्पुनः
avadhyastārako daityaḥ sarvairapi surāsuraiḥ yasya vadhyaśca nādyāpi sa jāto bhagavānpunaḥ
'The demon Taraka is unslayable by all the gods and demons together; and he by whom alone he can be slain has not yet, even now, been born, that blessed one.'
Verse 26 (skanda.1.57.26)
मया च वरदानेन च्छन्दयित्वा निवारितः
mayā ca varadānena cchandayitvā nivāritaḥ
'By my very grant of a boon, having offered him his choice, he was thereby restrained.'
Verse 27 (skanda.1.57.27)
तपसा स हिदीप्तोऽभूत्त्रैलोक्यदहनात्मकः॥ स च वव्रे वधं दैत्यः शिशतः सप्तवासरात्
tapasā sa hidīpto'bhūttrailokyadahanātmakaḥ sa ca vavre vadhaṁ daityaḥ śiśataḥ saptavāsarāt
'For by his austerity he had blazed forth, capable of burning the three worlds; and that demon chose, as the cause of his death, a mere infant of seven days.'
Verse 28 (skanda.1.57.28)
स च सप्तदिनो बालः शंकराद्यो भविष्यति॥ तारकस्य च वीरस्य वधकर्ता भविष्यति
sa ca saptadino bālaḥ śaṁkarādyo bhaviṣyati tārakasya ca vīrasya vadhakartā bhaviṣyati
'And that seven-day-old child shall be the son born of Shankara; and he shall become the slayer of the hero Taraka.'
Verse 29 (skanda.1.57.29)
सतीनामा तु या देवी विनष्टा दक्षहेलया॥ सा भविष्यति कल्याणी हिमाचलशरीरजा
satīnāmā tu yā devī vinaṣṭā dakṣahelayā sā bhaviṣyati kalyāṇī himācalaśarīrajā
'And that goddess named Sati, who perished through Daksha's contempt — she, the auspicious one, shall be born again as the daughter of the Himalaya.'
Verse 30 (skanda.1.57.30)
शंकरस्य च तस्याश्च यत्नः कार्यः समागमे॥ अहमप्यस्य कार्यस्य शेषं कर्ता न संशयः
śaṁkarasya ca tasyāśca yatnaḥ kāryaḥ samāgame ahamapyasya kāryasya śeṣaṁ kartā na saṁśayaḥ
'Effort must be made for the union of Shankara and her; and I myself shall accomplish the rest of this task, without doubt.'
Verse 31 (skanda.1.57.31)
इत्युक्तास्त्रिदशास्तेन साक्षात्कलयोनिना॥ जग्मुर्मेरुं प्रणम्येशं मर्करूपेण संवृताः
ityuktāstridaśāstena sākṣātkalayoninā jagmurmeruṁ praṇamyeśaṁ markarūpeṇa saṁvṛtāḥ
Thus addressed by him, the very source of Time himself, the thirty gods, having bowed to the Lord, went to Meru, still covered in the form of monkeys.
Verse 32 (skanda.1.57.32)
ततो गतेषु देवेषु ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः॥ निशां सस्मार भगवान्स्वां तनुं पूर्वसंभवाम्
tato gateṣu deveṣu brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ niśāṁ sasmāra bhagavānsvāṁ tanuṁ pūrvasaṁbhavām
Then, when the gods had departed, Brahma, the grandfather of the worlds, the blessed one, called to mind Night, his own form of an earlier origin.
Verse 33 (skanda.1.57.33)
ततो भगवती रात्रिरुपतस्थे पितामहम्॥ तां विविक्ते समालोक्य तथोवाच विभावरीम्
tato bhagavatī rātrirupatasthe pitāmaham tāṁ vivikte samālokya tathovāca vibhāvarīm
Then the blessed goddess Ratri presented herself before the Grandfather; and, beholding her in solitude, he spoke thus to Vibhavari —
Verse 34 (skanda.1.57.34)
विभावरि महाकार्यं विबुधानामुपस्थितम्॥ तत्कर्तव्यं त्वया देवि श्रृणु कार्यस्य निश्चयम्
vibhāvari mahākāryaṁ vibudhānāmupasthitam tatkartavyaṁ tvayā devi śrṛṇu kāryasya niścayam
'O Vibhavari, a great task, concerning the gods, has now arisen; that task must be accomplished by you, O goddess — hear the resolve of this matter.'
Verse 35 (skanda.1.57.35)
तारकोनाम दैत्येंद्रः सुरकेतुरनिर्ज्जितः॥ तस्याभावाय भगवाञ्जनयिष्यति यं शिवः
tārakonāma daityeṁdraḥ suraketuranirjjitaḥ tasyābhāvāya bhagavāñjanayiṣyati yaṁ śivaḥ
'There is an unconquered lord of demons named Taraka, a scourge of the gods; for his destruction, the blessed Shiva will beget a son —'
Verse 36 (skanda.1.57.36)
सुतः स भविता तस्य तारकस्यांतकारकः॥ अहं त्वादौ यदा जातस्तदापश्यं पुरःस्थितम्
sutaḥ sa bhavitā tasya tārakasyāṁtakārakaḥ ahaṁ tvādau yadā jātastadāpaśyaṁ puraḥsthitam
'— that son shall be the ender of Taraka. Now, when I myself was first born, I then beheld, standing before me,'
Verse 37 (skanda.1.57.37)
अर्धनारीश्वरं देवं व्याप्य विश्वमवस्थितम्॥ दृष्ट्वा तमब्रुवं देवं भजस्वेति च भक्तितः
ardhanārīśvaraṁ devaṁ vyāpya viśvamavasthitam dṛṣṭvā tamabruvaṁ devaṁ bhajasveti ca bhaktitaḥ
'the god Ardhanarishvara, pervading and abiding in the universe; and seeing that god, I said to him with devotion, Be worshipped!'
Verse 38 (skanda.1.57.38)
ततो नारी पृथग्जाता पुरुषश्च तथा पृथक्॥ तस्याश्चैवांशजाः सर्वाः स्त्रियस्त्रिभुवने स्मृताः
tato nārī pṛthagjātā puruṣaśca tathā pṛthak tasyāścaivāṁśajāḥ sarvāḥ striyastribhuvane smṛtāḥ
'Then the woman was born apart, and the man likewise apart; and from her, as her portions, all the women in the three worlds are held to be born,'
Verse 39 (skanda.1.57.39)
एकादश च रुद्राश्च पुरुषास्तस्य चांशजाः॥ तां नारीमहामालोक्य पुत्रं दक्षमथा ब्रवम्
ekādaśa ca rudrāśca puruṣāstasya cāṁśajāḥ tāṁ nārīmahāmālokya putraṁ dakṣamathā bravam
'and the eleven Rudras, and other males, are his portions. Having beheld that great goddess, I then said to my son Daksha —'
Verse 40 (skanda.1.57.40)
भजस्व पुत्रीं जगती ममापि च तवापि च॥ पुंदुःखनकात्त्रात्री पुत्री ते भाविनी त्वियम्
bhajasva putrīṁ jagatī mamāpi ca tavāpi ca puṁduḥkhanakāttrātrī putrī te bhāvinī tviyam
'— Take her as a daughter, she who pervades the world, both mine and yours; this shall become your daughter, a savioress from the sorrow of men.'
Verse 41 (skanda.1.57.41)
एवमुक्तो मया दक्षः पुत्रीत्वे परि कल्पिताम्॥ रुद्राय दत्तवान्भक्त्या नाम दत्त्वा सतीति यत्
evamukto mayā dakṣaḥ putrītve pari kalpitām rudrāya dattavānbhaktyā nāma dattvā satīti yat
'Thus addressed by me, Daksha, having accepted her as his own daughter, gave her with devotion to Rudra, naming her Sati.'
Verse 42 (skanda.1.57.42)
ततः काले चँ कस्मिंश्चिदवमेने च तां पिता॥ मुमूर्षुः पापसंकल्पो दुरात्मा कुलकज्जलः
tataḥ kāle ca~ kasmiṁścidavamene ca tāṁ pitā mumūrṣuḥ pāpasaṁkalpo durātmā kulakajjalaḥ
'Then, at some later time, her father dishonored her — evil in intent, wicked-minded, the very soot of his own lineage, as if courting his own destruction.'
Verse 43 (skanda.1.57.43)
ये रुद्रं नैव मन्यंते ते स्फुटं कुलकज्जलाः॥ पिशाचास्ते दुरात्मानो भवंति ब्रह्मराक्षसाः
ye rudraṁ naiva manyaṁte te sphuṭaṁ kulakajjalāḥ piśācāste durātmāno bhavaṁti brahmarākṣasāḥ
'Those who do not honor Rudra are, plainly, the very soot of their lineage; such evil-souled ones become ghouls, Brahmarakshasas.'
Verse 44 (skanda.1.57.44)
अवमानेन तस्यापि यथा देवी जहौ तनुम्॥ यथा यज्ञः स च ध्वस्तो भवेन विदितं हि ते'
avamānena tasyāpi yathā devī jahau tanum yathā yajñaḥ sa ca dhvasto bhavena viditaṁ hi te'
'By that very insult, how the goddess gave up her body, and how that sacrifice was destroyed — this, indeed, is known to you.'
Verse 45 (skanda.1.57.45)
अधुना हिमशैलस्य भवित्री दुहिता च सा॥ महेश्वरं पतिं सा च पुनः प्राप्स्यति निश्चितम्
adhunā himaśailasya bhavitrī duhitā ca sā maheśvaraṁ patiṁ sā ca punaḥ prāpsyati niścitam
'Now she shall become the daughter of the Snow Mountain; and she shall surely obtain Maheshvara again as her husband.'
Verse 46 (skanda.1.57.46)
तदिदं च त्वया कार्यं मेनागर्भे प्रविश्य च॥ तस्याश्छविं कुरु कृष्णां यथा काली भवेत्तु सा
tadidaṁ ca tvayā kāryaṁ menāgarbhe praviśya ca tasyāśchaviṁ kuru kṛṣṇāṁ yathā kālī bhavettu sā
'Now this is the task for you: entering the womb of Mena, make her complexion dark, so that she shall become known as Kali.'
Verse 47 (skanda.1.57.47)
यदा रुद्रोपहसिता तपस्तप्स्यति सा महत्॥ समाप्तनियमा देवी यदा चोग्रा भविष्यति
yadā rudropahasitā tapastapsyati sā mahat samāptaniyamā devī yadā cogrā bhaviṣyati
'When, mocked by Rudra, she shall perform great austerity; when the goddess, having completed her vows, shall become fierce;'
Verse 48 (skanda.1.57.48)
स्वयमेव यदा रूपं सुगौरं प्रतिपत्स्यते॥ विरहेण हरश्चास्या मत्वा शून्यं जगत्त्रयम्
svayameva yadā rūpaṁ sugauraṁ pratipatsyate viraheṇa haraścāsyā matvā śūnyaṁ jagattrayam
'when she shall herself attain a fair, golden hue; and when Hara, feeling the three worlds empty through separation from her,'
Verse 49 (skanda.1.57.49)
तस्यैव हिमशैलस्य कंदरे सिद्धसेविते॥ प्रतीक्षमाणस्तां देवीमुग्रं संतप्स्यते तपः
tasyaiva himaśailasya kaṁdare siddhasevite pratīkṣamāṇastāṁ devīmugraṁ saṁtapsyate tapaḥ
'shall, in a cave of that very snow-mountain frequented by Siddhas, await that goddess and perform fierce austerity —'
Verse 50 (skanda.1.57.50)
तयोः सुतप्ततपसोर्भविता यो महान्सुतः॥ भविष्यति स दैत्यस्य तारकस्य निवारकः
tayoḥ sutaptatapasorbhavitā yo mahānsutaḥ bhaviṣyati sa daityasya tārakasya nivārakaḥ
'— then, of those two, whose austerity shall thus have well ripened, there shall be born a great son; he shall be the queller of the demon Taraka.'
Verse 51 (skanda.1.57.51)
तपसो हि विना नास्ति सिद्धिः कुत्रापि शोभने॥ सर्वासां कर्मसिद्धीनां मूलं हि तप उच्यते
tapaso hi vinā nāsti siddhiḥ kutrāpi śobhane sarvāsāṁ karmasiddhīnāṁ mūlaṁ hi tapa ucyate
'For without austerity there is no accomplishment anywhere, O gracious one; austerity is said to be the very root of the success of all undertakings.'
Verse 52 (skanda.1.57.52)
त्वयापि दानवो देवि देहनिर्गतया तदा॥ चंडमुंडपुरोगाश्च हंतव्या लोकदुर्जयाः
tvayāpi dānavo devi dehanirgatayā tadā caṁḍamuṁḍapurogāśca haṁtavyā lokadurjayāḥ
'And by you too, O goddess, having then issued forth from her body, the demons headed by Chanda and Munda, unconquerable by the world, must be slain.'
Verse 53 (skanda.1.57.53)
यस्माच्चंडं च मुंडं च त्वं देवि निहनिष्यसि॥ चामुंडेति ततो लोके ख्याता देवि भविष्यसि
yasmāccaṁḍaṁ ca muṁḍaṁ ca tvaṁ devi nihaniṣyasi cāmuṁḍeti tato loke khyātā devi bhaviṣyasi
'Since you, O goddess, shall slay Chanda and Munda, you shall thereafter become renowned in the world as Chamunda.'
Verse 54 (skanda.1.57.54)
ततस्त्वां वरदे देवी लोकः संपूजयिष्यति॥ भेदेर्बहुविधाकारैः सर्वगां कामसाधनीम्
tatastvāṁ varade devī lokaḥ saṁpūjayiṣyati bhederbahuvidhākāraiḥ sarvagāṁ kāmasādhanīm
'Then, O boon-granting goddess, the world shall worship you, under many varied forms and distinctions, as the all-pervading fulfiller of desires.'
Verse 55 (skanda.1.57.55)
ॐकारवक्त्रां गायत्रीं त्वामर्चंति द्विजोत्तमाः॥ ऊर्जितां बलदां पापि राजानः सुमहाबलाः
oṁkāravaktrāṁ gāyatrīṁ tvāmarcaṁti dvijottamāḥ ūrjitāṁ baladāṁ pāpi rājānaḥ sumahābalāḥ
'The best of the twice-born shall worship you as Gayatri, whose mouth is Om; kings of very great power shall worship you as mighty and the giver of strength;'
Verse 56 (skanda.1.57.56)
वैश्याश्च भूतिमित्येव शिवां शूद्रास्तथा शुभे॥ क्षांतिर्मुनीनामक्षोभ्या दया नियमिनामपि
vaiśyāśca bhūtimityeva śivāṁ śūdrāstathā śubhe kṣāṁtirmunīnāmakṣobhyā dayā niyamināmapi
'the Vaishyas shall worship you as Bhuti, and the Shudras, O auspicious one, as Shiva; you are the unshakeable patience of sages, and the compassion of the disciplined too.'
Verse 57 (skanda.1.57.57)
त्वं महोपाय सन्दोहा नीतिर्नयविसर्पिणाम्॥ परिस्थितिस्त्वमर्थानां त्वमहो प्राणिका मता
tvaṁ mahopāya sandohā nītirnayavisarpiṇām paristhitistvamarthānāṁ tvamaho prāṇikā matā
'You are the very abundance of great means; you are the policy of those who follow right conduct; you are the circumstance of worldly ends; you are held to be the vital force of all beings.'
Verse 58 (skanda.1.57.58)
त्वं युक्तिः सर्वभूतानां त्वं गतिः सर्वदेहिनाम्॥ रतिस्त्वं रतिचित्तानां प्रीतिस्त्वं हृद्यदर्शिनाम्
tvaṁ yuktiḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ tvaṁ gatiḥ sarvadehinām ratistvaṁ raticittānāṁ prītistvaṁ hṛdyadarśinām
'You are the ingenuity of all beings; you are the refuge of all embodied creatures; you are the delight of those whose minds are set on delight; you are the affection of those who behold what is dear to the heart.'
Verse 59 (skanda.1.57.59)
त्वं कांतिः शुभरूपाणां त्वं शांति शुभकर्मिणाम्॥ त्वं भ्रांतिर्मूढचित्तानां त्वं फलं क्रतुयाजिनाम्
tvaṁ kāṁtiḥ śubharūpāṇāṁ tvaṁ śāṁti śubhakarmiṇām tvaṁ bhrāṁtirmūḍhacittānāṁ tvaṁ phalaṁ kratuyājinām
'You are the loveliness of things of beautiful form; you are the peace of those of righteous deeds; you are the delusion of the confused-minded; you are the fruit of those who perform sacrifices.'
Verse 60 (skanda.1.57.60)
जलधीनां महावेला त्वं च लीला विलासिनाम्॥ संभूतिस्त्वं पदार्थानां स्थितिस्त्वं लोकपालिनी
jaladhīnāṁ mahāvelā tvaṁ ca līlā vilāsinām saṁbhūtistvaṁ padārthānāṁ sthitistvaṁ lokapālinī
'You are the great tide-line of the oceans; you are the sport of the playful; you are the coming-into-being of all things, and, protectress of the worlds, you are their continuance.'
Verse 61 (skanda.1.57.61)
त्वं कालरात्रिर्निःशेष भुवनावलिनाशिनी॥ प्रियकंठग्रहानन्ददायिनी त्वं विभावरी
tvaṁ kālarātrirniḥśeṣa bhuvanāvalināśinī priyakaṁṭhagrahānandadāyinī tvaṁ vibhāvarī
'You are the Night of Time, the destroyer of the whole array of worlds; you are the giver of the joy of a beloved's embrace; you are Vibhavari, Night herself.'
Verse 62 (skanda.1.57.62)
प्रसीद प्रणतानस्मान्सौम्यदृष्ट्या विलोकय
prasīda praṇatānasmānsaumyadṛṣṭyā vilokaya
'Be gracious, and look upon us who bow before you with a benign gaze.'
Verse 63 (skanda.1.57.63)
इति स्तुवंतो ये देवि पूजयिष्यंति त्वां शुभे॥ ते सर्वकामानाप्स्यंति नियता नात्र संशयः
iti stuvaṁto ye devi pūjayiṣyaṁti tvāṁ śubhe te sarvakāmānāpsyaṁti niyatā nātra saṁśayaḥ
'Those who, O goddess, praising you thus, shall worship you, O auspicious one, shall surely obtain all their desires — of this there is no doubt.'
Verse 64 (skanda.1.57.64)
इत्युक्ता तु निशादेवी तथेत्युक्त्वा कृताञ्जलिः॥ जगाम त्वरिता पूर्वं गृहं हिमगिरेर्महत्
ityuktā tu niśādevī tathetyuktvā kṛtāñjaliḥ jagāma tvaritā pūrvaṁ gṛhaṁ himagirermahat
Thus addressed, the goddess Night, saying 'So be it,' with joined palms, went swiftly beforehand to the great house of the Himalaya.

तत्राऽऽसीनां महाहर्म्ये रत्नभित्तिसमाश्रये॥ ददर्श मेनामापांडुच्छविवक्त्रसरोरुहाम्
tatrā''sīnāṁ mahāharmye ratnabhittisamāśraye dadarśa menāmāpāṁḍucchavivaktrasaroruhām
There she saw Mena, seated in a great mansion resting upon jeweled walls, her lotus-face of a somewhat pale hue,

किंचिच्छयाममुखोदग्रस्तनभागावनामिताम्॥ महौषधिगणबद्धमंत्रराजनिषेविताम्
kiṁcicchayāmamukhodagrastanabhāgāvanāmitām mahauṣadhigaṇabaddhamaṁtrarājaniṣevitām
her face touched faintly with darkness, bent slightly by the weight of her full breasts, attended by the great king of mantras bound up with hosts of protective herbs.
Verse 67 (skanda.1.57.67)
ततः किंचित्प्रमिलिते मेनानेत्रांबुजद्वये॥ आविवेशमुखं रात्रिर्ब्रह्मणो वचनात्तदा
tataḥ kiṁcitpramilite menānetrāṁbujadvaye āviveśamukhaṁ rātrirbrahmaṇo vacanāttadā
Then, as the pair of Mena's lotus-eyes had drooped slightly in drowsiness, Night, at the word of Brahma, entered then into her mouth.
Verse 68 (skanda.1.57.68)
जन्मदाया जगन्मातुः क्रमेण जठरांतरम्॥ अरंजयच्छविं देव्या गुहमातुर्विभावरी
janmadāyā jaganmātuḥ krameṇa jaṭharāṁtaram araṁjayacchaviṁ devyā guhamāturvibhāvarī
Vibhavari, who was to give birth to the mother of the world, gradually, within the womb, tinged the complexion of the goddess, mother of Guha, with darkness.
Verse 69 (skanda.1.57.69)
ततो जगन्मं गलदा मेना हिमगिरेः प्रिया॥ ब्राह्मे मुहूर्ते सुभगे प्रासूयत शुभाननाम्
tato jaganmaṁ galadā menā himagireḥ priyā brāhme muhūrte subhage prāsūyata śubhānanām
Then Mena, the beloved of the Himalaya, giver of comfort to the world, at the auspicious Brahma-muhurta, gave birth to her of lovely countenance.
Verse 70 (skanda.1.57.70)
तस्यां तु जायमानायां जंतवः स्थाणुजंगमाः॥ अभवन्सुखिनः सर्वे सर्वलोकनिवासिनः
tasyāṁ tu jāyamānāyāṁ jaṁtavaḥ sthāṇujaṁgamāḥ abhavansukhinaḥ sarve sarvalokanivāsinaḥ
And when she was born, all creatures, unmoving and moving, all the dwellers of all the worlds, became filled with happiness.
Verse 71 (skanda.1.57.71)
अभवत्क्रूरसत्त्वानां चेतः शांतं च देहिनाम्॥ ज्योतिषामपि तेजस्त्वमभवत्सुतरां तदा
abhavatkrūrasattvānāṁ cetaḥ śāṁtaṁ ca dehinām jyotiṣāmapi tejastvamabhavatsutarāṁ tadā
The minds even of cruel-natured beings became peaceful; and the very splendor of the heavenly bodies grew exceedingly bright at that time.
Verse 72 (skanda.1.57.72)
वनाश्रिताश्चौषधयः स्वादवंति फलानि च॥ गंधवंति च माल्यानि विमलं च नभोऽभवत्
vanāśritāścauṣadhayaḥ svādavaṁti phalāni ca gaṁdhavaṁti ca mālyāni vimalaṁ ca nabho'bhavat
The forest herbs and their fruits became sweet, garlands grew fragrant, and the sky became clear and spotless.
Verse 73 (skanda.1.57.73)
मारुतश्च सुखस्पर्शो दिशश्च सुमनोहराः॥ विस्मृता नि च शास्त्राणि प्रादुर्भावं प्रपेदिरे
mārutaśca sukhasparśo diśaśca sumanoharāḥ vismṛtā ni ca śāstrāṇi prādurbhāvaṁ prapedire
The wind became pleasant to the touch, and the quarters grew most enchanting; and forgotten scriptures came again to light.
Verse 74 (skanda.1.57.74)
प्रभावस्तीर्थमुख्यानां तदा पुण्यतमोऽभवत्॥ सत्ये धर्मे चाध्ययने यज्ञे दाने तपस्यपि
prabhāvastīrthamukhyānāṁ tadā puṇyatamo'bhavat satye dharme cādhyayane yajñe dāne tapasyapi
The power of the foremost sacred sites became then most meritorious; and in truth, in righteousness, in study, in sacrifice, in charity, and in austerity too,

सर्वेषामभवच्छ्रद्धा जन्मकाले गुहारणेः॥ अंतरिक्षेमराश्चापि प्रहर्षोत्फुल्ललोचनाः
sarveṣāmabhavacchraddhā janmakāle guhāraṇeḥ aṁtarikṣemarāścāpi praharṣotphullalocanāḥ
faith arose in all, at the time of the birth of Guha's mother; and the gods in the sky too, their eyes wide with delight,
Verse 76 (skanda.1.57.76)
हरिब्रह्ममहेंद्रार्कवायुवह्निपुरोगमाः॥ पुष्पवृष्टिं प्रमुमुचुस्तस्मिन्मेनागृहे शुभे
haribrahmamaheṁdrārkavāyuvahnipurogamāḥ puṣpavṛṣṭiṁ pramumucustasminmenāgṛhe śubhe
with Hari, Brahma, Mahendra, the Sun, Vayu, and Agni foremost among them, showered down a rain of flowers upon that auspicious house of Mena.
Verse 77 (skanda.1.57.77)
मेरुप्रभृतयश्चापि मूर्तिमंतो महानगाः॥ तस्मिन्महोत्सवे प्राप्ता वीरकांस्योपशोभिताः
meruprabhṛtayaścāpi mūrtimaṁto mahānagāḥ tasminmahotsave prāptā vīrakāṁsyopaśobhitāḥ
And the great mountains, Meru foremost among them, having taken embodied form, arrived at that great festival, adorned with ceremonial vessels,
Verse 78 (skanda.1.57.78)
सागराः सरितश्चैव समाजग्मुश्च सर्वशः
sāgarāḥ saritaścaiva samājagmuśca sarvaśaḥ
and the oceans and the rivers too, all of them, gathered there from every side.
Verse 79 (skanda.1.57.79)
हिमशैलोऽभवल्लोके तदा सर्वैश्चराचरैः॥ सेव्यश्चाप्यभिगम्यश्च पूजनीयश्च भारत
himaśailo'bhavalloke tadā sarvaiścarācaraiḥ sevyaścāpyabhigamyaśca pūjanīyaśca bhārata
The Himalaya then became, O Bharata, in the eyes of the whole world of moving and unmoving beings, worthy of service, worthy of approach, and worthy of worship.

अनुभूयोत्सवं ते च जग्मुः स्वानालयांस्तदा
anubhūyotsavaṁ te ca jagmuḥ svānālayāṁstadā
And having partaken of the festival, they then returned each to their own abodes.
