The Anger of Parvati
Verse 1 (skanda.1.62.1)
॥नारद उवाच॥ ततो निरुपमं दिव्यं सर्वरत्नमयं शुभम्॥ ईशाननिर्मितं साक्षात्सह देव्याविशद्गृहम्
nārada uvāca tato nirupamaṁ divyaṁ sarvaratnamayaṁ śubham īśānanirmitaṁ sākṣātsaha devyāviśadgṛham
Narada said: Then, together with the goddess, he entered an incomparable, celestial, entirely jewel-built, auspicious house, made by Ishana himself.
Verse 2 (skanda.1.62.2)
तत्रासौ मंदरगिरौ सह देव्या भगाक्षहा॥ प्रासादे तत्र चोद्याने रेमे संहृष्टमानसः
tatrāsau maṁdaragirau saha devyā bhagākṣahā prāsāde tatra codyāne reme saṁhṛṣṭamānasaḥ
There, on Mount Mandara, together with the goddess, he, the destroyer of Bhaga's eyes, delighted with joyful mind in that palace and in that garden.
Verse 3 (skanda.1.62.3)
एतस्मिन्नंतरे देवास्तारकेणातिपीडिताः॥ प्रोत्साहितेन चात्यर्थं मया कलिचिकीर्षुणा
etasminnaṁtare devāstārakeṇātipīḍitāḥ protsāhitena cātyarthaṁ mayā kalicikīrṣuṇā
Meanwhile, the gods, greatly oppressed by Taraka, and urged on exceedingly by me, desirous of stirring up discord,
Verse 4 (skanda.1.62.4)
आसाद्य ते भवं देवं तुष्टुबुर्बहुधा स्तवैः॥ एतस्मिन्नंतरे देवी प्रोद्वर्तयत गात्रकम्
āsādya te bhavaṁ devaṁ tuṣṭuburbahudhā stavaiḥ etasminnaṁtare devī prodvartayata gātrakam
approached the god Bhava and praised him with many hymns. Meanwhile, the goddess was rubbing her body with a cleansing paste,
Verse 5 (skanda.1.62.5)
उद्वर्तनमलेनाथ नरं चक्रे गजाननम्॥ देवानां संस्तवैः पुण्यैः कृपयाभिपरिप्लुता
udvartanamalenātha naraṁ cakre gajānanam devānāṁ saṁstavaiḥ puṇyaiḥ kṛpayābhipariplutā
and from the scurf of that unguent she then fashioned a man with an elephant's face — moved by compassion at the gods' sacred hymns of praise,
Verse 6 (skanda.1.62.6)
पुत्रेत्युवाच तं देवी ततः संहृष्टमानसा॥ एतस्मिन्नंतरे शर्वस्तत्रागत्य वचोऽब्रवीत्
putretyuvāca taṁ devī tataḥ saṁhṛṣṭamānasā etasminnaṁtare śarvastatrāgatya vaco'bravīt
the goddess, her heart filled with joy, called him 'son.' Meanwhile Sharva, arriving there, spoke these words:
Verse 7 (skanda.1.62.7)
पुत्रस्तवायं गिरिजे श्रृणु यादृग्भविष्यति॥ विक्रमेण च वीर्येण कृपया सदृशो मया
putrastavāyaṁ girije śrṛṇu yādṛgbhaviṣyati vikrameṇa ca vīryeṇa kṛpayā sadṛśo mayā
'This is your son, O Girija; hear what manner of being he shall be: in valor, in might, and in compassion, equal to me,'
Verse 8 (skanda.1.62.8)
यथाहं तादृशश्चासौ पुत्रस्ते भविता गुणैः॥ ये च पापा दुराचारा वेदान्धर्मं द्विषंति च
yathāhaṁ tādṛśaścāsau putraste bhavitā guṇaiḥ ye ca pāpā durācārā vedāndharmaṁ dviṣaṁti ca
'— just as I am, so shall this your son be, in his qualities. And those who are sinful, of evil conduct, who hate the Vedas and dharma —'
Verse 9 (skanda.1.62.9)
तेषामामरणांतानि विघ्नान्येष करिष्यति॥ ये च मां नैव मन्यंते विष्णुं वापि जगद्गुरुम्
teṣāmāmaraṇāṁtāni vighnānyeṣa kariṣyati ye ca māṁ naiva manyaṁte viṣṇuṁ vāpi jagadgurum
'— he shall create obstacles for them, unto the very end of their lives. And those who honor neither me nor Vishnu, the teacher of the world —'
Verse 10 (skanda.1.62.10)
विघ्निता विघ्नराजेन ते यास्यंति महत्तमः॥ तेषां गृहेषु कलहः सदा नैवोपसाम्यति
vighnitā vighnarājena te yāsyaṁti mahattamaḥ teṣāṁ gṛheṣu kalahaḥ sadā naivopasāmyati
'— obstructed by the lord of obstacles, they shall go to the greatest misfortune; in their houses, discord shall never cease —'
Verse 11 (skanda.1.62.11)
पुत्रस्य तव विघ्नेन समूलं तस्य नश्यति॥ येषां न पूज्याः पूज्यंते क्रोधासत्यपराश्च ये
putrasya tava vighnena samūlaṁ tasya naśyati yeṣāṁ na pūjyāḥ pūjyaṁte krodhāsatyaparāśca ye
'— through the obstruction of your son, that house shall perish, root and all. And those who worship the unworthy, and are given over to wrath and falsehood,'
Verse 12 (skanda.1.62.12)
रौद्रसाहसिका ये च तेषां विघ्नं करिष्यति॥ श्रुतिधर्माञ्ज्ञातिधर्मान्पालयंति गुरूंश्च ये
raudrasāhasikā ye ca teṣāṁ vighnaṁ kariṣyati śrutidharmāñjñātidharmānpālayaṁti gurūṁśca ye
'— and those who are violent and reckless, for them he shall create obstacles. But those who uphold the duties of the Shruti, the duties toward kin, and their elders,'
Verse 13 (skanda.1.62.13)
कृपालवो गतक्रोधास्तेषां विघ्नं हरिष्यति॥ सर्वे धर्माश्च कर्माणि तथा नानाविधानि च
kṛpālavo gatakrodhāsteṣāṁ vighnaṁ hariṣyati sarve dharmāśca karmāṇi tathā nānāvidhāni ca
'— the compassionate, free from anger, for them he shall remove all obstacles. All duties and rites, and manifold undertakings of every kind,'
Verse 14 (skanda.1.62.14)
सविघ्नानि भिवष्यंति पूजयास्य विना शुभे॥ एवं श्रुत्वा उमा प्राह एवमस्त्विति शंकरम्
savighnāni bhivaṣyaṁti pūjayāsya vinā śubhe evaṁ śrutvā umā prāha evamastviti śaṁkaram
'— shall be beset with obstacles, O auspicious one, without his worship.' Hearing this, Uma said to Shankara, 'So be it.'
Verse 15 (skanda.1.62.15)
ततो बृहत्तनुः सोऽभूत्तेजसा द्योतयन्दिशः॥ ततो गणैः समं शर्वः सुराणां प्रददौ च तम्॥ यावत्तार कहंता वो भवेत्तावदयं प्रभुः
tato bṛhattanuḥ so'bhūttejasā dyotayandiśaḥ tato gaṇaiḥ samaṁ śarvaḥ surāṇāṁ pradadau ca tam yāvattāra kahaṁtā vo bhavettāvadayaṁ prabhuḥ
Then he grew into a great body, illuminating the quarters with his splendor. Then Sharva, together with the ganas, gave him over to the gods, saying: 'Until the slayer of Taraka is born to you, this lord shall watch over you.'
Verse 16 (skanda.1.62.16)
ततो विघ्नपतिर्देवैः संस्तुतः प्रमतार्तिहा॥ चकार तेषां कृत्यानि विघ्नानि दितिजन्मनाम्
tato vighnapatirdevaiḥ saṁstutaḥ pramatārtihā cakāra teṣāṁ kṛtyāni vighnāni ditijanmanām
Then the lord of obstacles, praised by the gods, the reliever of the distress of the heedless, brought obstacles upon the undertakings of Diti's offspring.
Verse 17 (skanda.1.62.17)
पार्वती च पुनर्देवी पुत्रत्वे परिकल्प्य च॥ अशोकस्यांकुरं वार्भिरवर्द्धयत स्वादृतैः
pārvatī ca punardevī putratve parikalpya ca aśokasyāṁkuraṁ vārbhiravarddhayata svādṛtaiḥ
And the goddess Parvati, once more taking something as a son, nurtured a sprout of an Ashoka tree with waters lovingly offered.
Verse 18 (skanda.1.62.18)
सप्तर्षीनथ चाहूय संस्कारमंगलं तरोः॥ कारयामास तन्वंगी ततस्तां मुनयोऽब्रुवन्
saptarṣīnatha cāhūya saṁskāramaṁgalaṁ taroḥ kārayāmāsa tanvaṁgī tatastāṁ munayo'bruvan
Then, summoning the Seven Sages, the slender-limbed goddess had them perform an auspicious sanctifying rite for the tree; and then the sages said to her —
Verse 19 (skanda.1.62.19)
त्वयैव दर्शिते मार्गे मर्यादां कर्तुमर्हसि॥ किं फलं भविता देवि कल्पितैस्तरुपुत्रकैः
tvayaiva darśite mārge maryādāṁ kartumarhasi kiṁ phalaṁ bhavitā devi kalpitaistaruputrakaiḥ
'On this very path shown by you, you should establish a fixed custom. What fruit, O goddess, shall come from these tree-sons thus adopted?'
Verse 20 (skanda.1.62.20)
॥देव्युवाच॥ यो वै निरुदके ग्रामे कूपं कारयते बुधः॥ यावत्तोयं भवेत्कूपे तावत्स्वर्गे स मोदते
devyuvāca yo vai nirudake grāme kūpaṁ kārayate budhaḥ yāvattoyaṁ bhavetkūpe tāvatsvarge sa modate
The goddess said: 'A wise man who has a well dug in a village without water — for as long as there is water in that well, so long he rejoices in heaven.'
Verse 21 (skanda.1.62.21)
दशकूपसमावापी दशवापी समं सरः॥ दशसरःसमा कन्या दशकन्यासमः क्रतुः
daśakūpasamāvāpī daśavāpī samaṁ saraḥ daśasaraḥsamā kanyā daśakanyāsamaḥ kratuḥ
'A pond is equal to ten wells; a lake is equal to ten ponds; a daughter is equal to ten lakes; a sacrifice is equal to ten daughters;'
Verse 22 (skanda.1.62.22)
दशक्रतुसमः पुत्रो दशपुत्रसमो द्रुमः
daśakratusamaḥ putro daśaputrasamo drumaḥ
'a son is equal to ten sacrifices; and a tree is equal to ten sons.'
Verse 23 (skanda.1.62.23)
एषैव मम मर्यादा नियता लोकभाविनी॥ जीर्णोद्धारे कृते वापि फलं तद्द्विगुणं मतम्
eṣaiva mama maryādā niyatā lokabhāvinī jīrṇoddhāre kṛte vāpi phalaṁ taddviguṇaṁ matam
'This, then, is my own fixed rule, ordained for the good of the world; and if a restoration of what has decayed is performed, the fruit of that is held to be doubled.'
Verse 24 (skanda.1.62.24)
॥इति गणेशोत्पत्तिः॥ ततः कदाचिद्भगवानुमया सह मंदरे॥ मंदिरे हर्षजनने कलधौतमये शुभे
iti gaṇeśotpattiḥ tataḥ kadācidbhagavānumayā saha maṁdare maṁdire harṣajanane kaladhautamaye śubhe
[Thus ends the birth-story of Ganesha.] Then, once, the blessed Lord, together with Uma, in a joy-inducing, auspicious, silver-golden mansion on Mandara,
Verse 25 (skanda.1.62.25)
प्रकीर्णकुसुमामोदमहालिकुलकूजिते॥ किंनरोद्गीतसंगीत प्रतिशब्दितमध्यके
prakīrṇakusumāmodamahālikulakūjite kiṁnarodgītasaṁgīta pratiśabditamadhyake
— fragrant with scattered flowers, humming with great swarms of bees, its inner halls echoing with the songs sung by Kinnaras,
Verse 26 (skanda.1.62.26)
क्रीडामयूरैर्हसैश्च श्रुतैश्चैवाभिनादिते॥ मौक्तिकैर्विविध रत्नैर्विनिर्मितगवाक्षके
krīḍāmayūrairhasaiśca śrutaiścaivābhinādite mauktikairvividha ratnairvinirmitagavākṣake
resounding with the cries of pet peacocks and swans, its lattice-windows fashioned of pearls and various jewels —
Verse 27 (skanda.1.62.27)
तत्र पुण्यकथाभिश्च क्रीडतो रुभयोस्तयोः॥ प्रादुरभून्महाञ्छब्दः पूरितांबरगोचरः
tatra puṇyakathābhiśca krīḍato rubhayostayoḥ prādurabhūnmahāñchabdaḥ pūritāṁbaragocaraḥ
there, as those two sported together, engaged in sacred conversation, a great sound arose, filling the whole expanse of the sky.
Verse 28 (skanda.1.62.28)
तं श्रुत्वा कौतुकाद्देवी किमेतदिति शंकरम्॥ पर्यपृच्छच्छुभतनूर्हरं विस्मयपूर्वकम्
taṁ śrutvā kautukāddevī kimetaditi śaṁkaram paryapṛcchacchubhatanūrharaṁ vismayapūrvakam
Hearing it, out of curiosity, the goddess of lovely form, filled with wonder, asked Shankara, Hara: 'What is this?'
Verse 29 (skanda.1.62.29)
तामाह देवीं गिरिशो दृष्टपूर्वास्तु ते त्वया॥ एते गणा मे क्रीडंति शैलेऽस्मिंस्त्वत्प्रियाः शुभे
tāmāha devīṁ giriśo dṛṣṭapūrvāstu te tvayā ete gaṇā me krīḍaṁti śaile'smiṁstvatpriyāḥ śubhe
Girisha said to the goddess: 'You have indeed seen these before — these are my ganas, at play here on this mountain, dear to you, O auspicious one.'
Verse 30 (skanda.1.62.30)
तपसा ब्रह्मचर्येण क्लेशेन क्षेत्रसाधनैः॥ यैरहं तोषितः पृथ्व्यां त एते मनुजोत्तमाः
tapasā brahmacaryeṇa kleśena kṣetrasādhanaiḥ yairahaṁ toṣitaḥ pṛthvyāṁ ta ete manujottamāḥ
'By austerity, by chastity, by hardship, by the disciplines of sacred sites — those men, foremost among mortals, by whom I was gladdened on earth —'
Verse 31 (skanda.1.62.31)
मत्समीपमनुप्राप्ता मम लोकं वरानने॥ चराचरस्य जगतः सृष्टिसंहारणक्षमाः
matsamīpamanuprāptā mama lokaṁ varānane carācarasya jagataḥ sṛṣṭisaṁhāraṇakṣamāḥ
'— have attained to my own presence, to my own world, O fair-faced one; they are capable of the creation and destruction of this world of moving and unmoving beings.'
Verse 32 (skanda.1.62.32)
विनैतान्नैव मे प्रीतिर्नैभिर्विरहितो रमे॥ एते अहमहं चैते तानेतान्पस्य पार्वति
vinaitānnaiva me prītirnaibhirvirahito rame ete ahamahaṁ caite tānetānpasya pārvati
'Without these, I have no joy at all; I cannot delight apart from them. These are myself, and I am these — behold them, O Parvati.'
Verse 33 (skanda.1.62.33)
इत्युक्ता विस्मिता देवी ददृशे तान्गवाक्षके॥ स्थिता पद्मपलाशाक्षी महादेवेन भाषिता
ityuktā vismitā devī dadṛśe tāngavākṣake sthitā padmapalāśākṣī mahādevena bhāṣitā
Thus addressed by Mahadeva, the astonished goddess, lotus-petal-eyed, standing at the lattice-window, beheld them —
Verse 34 (skanda.1.62.34)
केचित्कृशा ह्रस्वदीर्घाः केचित्स्थूलमहोदराः॥ व्याघ्रेभमेषाजमुखा नानाप्राणिमहामुखाः
kecitkṛśā hrasvadīrghāḥ kecitsthūlamahodarāḥ vyāghrebhameṣājamukhā nānāprāṇimahāmukhāḥ
— some thin, short or tall; some stout, with huge bellies; some with the faces of tigers, elephants, rams, or goats, with the great mouths of manifold creatures;
Verse 35 (skanda.1.62.35)
व्याघ्रचर्मपरीधाना नग्ना ज्वालामुखाः परे॥ गोकर्णा गजकर्णाश्च बहुपादमुखेक्षणाः
vyāghracarmaparīdhānā nagnā jvālāmukhāḥ pare gokarṇā gajakarṇāśca bahupādamukhekṣaṇāḥ
clad in tiger-skins, or naked, others with flaming mouths; some with the ears of cows, some with the ears of elephants; some with many feet, many mouths, many eyes;
Verse 36 (skanda.1.62.36)
विचित्रवाहनाश्चैव नानायुधधरास्तथा॥ गीतवादित्रतत्त्वज्ञाः सत्त्वगीतरसप्रियाः
vicitravāhanāścaiva nānāyudhadharāstathā gītavāditratattvajñāḥ sattvagītarasapriyāḥ
riding upon strange and varied mounts, bearing weapons of every kind; skilled in the essentials of song and instrumental music, fond of the flavor of songs about noble beings.
Verse 37 (skanda.1.62.37)
तान्दृष्ट्वा पार्वती प्राह कतिसंख्याभिधास्त्वमी
tāndṛṣṭvā pārvatī prāha katisaṁkhyābhidhāstvamī
Beholding them, Parvati asked: 'What are the number and the names of these?'
Verse 38 (skanda.1.62.38)
॥श्रीशंकर उवाच॥ असंख्ये यास्त्वमी देवी असंख्येयाभिधास्तथा॥ जगदापूरितं सर्वमेतैर्भीमैर्महाबलैः
śrīśaṁkara uvāca asaṁkhye yāstvamī devī asaṁkhyeyābhidhāstathā jagadāpūritaṁ sarvametairbhīmairmahābalaiḥ
The blessed Shankara said: 'Countless are these, O goddess, and countless likewise are their names; this entire universe is filled with these terrible, mighty beings.'
Verse 39 (skanda.1.62.39)
सिद्धक्षेत्रेषु रथ्यासु जीर्णोद्यानेषु वेश्मसु॥ दानवानां शरीरेषु बालेषून्मत्तकेषु च
siddhakṣetreṣu rathyāsu jīrṇodyāneṣu veśmasu dānavānāṁ śarīreṣu bāleṣūnmattakeṣu ca
'In sacred sites of the Siddhas, on roads, in decayed gardens, in houses, in the bodies of demons, in children, and in the deranged,'
Verse 40 (skanda.1.62.40)
एते विशति मुदिता नानाहारविहारिणः॥ ऊष्मपाः फेनपाश्चैव धूम्रपा मधुपायिनः॥ मदाहाराः सर्वभक्ष्यास्तथान्ये चाप्यभोजनाः
ete viśati muditā nānāhāravihāriṇaḥ ūṣmapāḥ phenapāścaiva dhūmrapā madhupāyinaḥ madāhārāḥ sarvabhakṣyāstathānye cāpyabhojanāḥ
'— these enter joyfully, delighting in manifold foods and diversions: drinkers of vapor, drinkers of foam, drinkers of smoke, drinkers of honey-wine, some feeding on intoxication, some devouring anything at all, and yet others who take no food whatsoever.'
Verse 41 (skanda.1.62.41)
गीतनृत्योपहाराश्च नानावाद्यरवप्रियाः॥ अनंतत्वादमीषां च वक्तुं शक्या न वै गुणाः
gītanṛtyopahārāśca nānāvādyaravapriyāḥ anaṁtatvādamīṣāṁ ca vaktuṁ śakyā na vai guṇāḥ
'Their offerings are song and dance, and they delight in the sound of manifold instruments; and, since they are without end, their qualities cannot possibly be told in full.'
Verse 42 (skanda.1.62.42)
॥श्रीदेव्युवाच॥ मनःशिलेन कल्केन य एष च्छुरिताननः॥ तेजसा भास्कराकारो रूपेण सदृशस्तव
śrīdevyuvāca manaḥśilena kalkena ya eṣa cchuritānanaḥ tejasā bhāskarākāro rūpeṇa sadṛśastava
The blessed Goddess said: 'This one here, whose face is smeared with a paste of red arsenic, radiant in form like the sun, resembling you in appearance —'
Verse 43 (skanda.1.62.43)
आकर्ण्याकर्ण्य ते देव गणैर्गीतान्महागुणान्॥ मुहुर्नृत्यति हास्यं च विदधाति मुहुर्मुहुः
ākarṇyākarṇya te deva gaṇairgītānmahāguṇān muhurnṛtyati hāsyaṁ ca vidadhāti muhurmuhuḥ
'— hearing again and again, O God, your great virtues sung by the ganas, dances repeatedly, and laughs again and again;'
Verse 44 (skanda.1.62.44)
सदाशिवशिवेत्येवं विह्वलो वक्ति यो मुहुः॥ धन्योऽमीदृशी यस्य भक्तिस्त्वयि महेश्वरे
sadāśivaśivetyevaṁ vihvalo vakti yo muhuḥ dhanyo'mīdṛśī yasya bhaktistvayi maheśvare
'— who, overcome with feeling, cries out again and again, Sadashiva! Shiva! — blessed indeed is he whose devotion to you, O Maheshvara, is such as this.'
Verse 45 (skanda.1.62.45)
एनं विज्ञातुमिच्छामि किंनामासौ गणस्तव॥ ॥श्रीशंकर उवाच॥ स एष वीरक देवी सदा मेद्रिसुते प्रियः
enaṁ vijñātumicchāmi kiṁnāmāsau gaṇastava śrīśaṁkara uvāca sa eṣa vīraka devī sadā medrisute priyaḥ
'I wish to know him — what is the name of this gana of yours?' The blessed Shankara said: 'This, O goddess, is Viraka, ever dear to me, O daughter of the mountain,'
Verse 46 (skanda.1.62.46)
नानाश्चर्यगुणाधारः प्रतीहारो मतोंऽबिके॥ ॥देव्युवाच॥ ईदृशस्य सुतस्यापि ममोऽकंठा पुरांतक
nānāścaryaguṇādhāraḥ pratīhāro matoṁ'bike devyuvāca īdṛśasya sutasyāpi mamo'kaṁṭhā purāṁtaka
'— the possessor of many wondrous virtues, regarded, O Ambika, as my own door-keeper.' The Goddess said: 'My throat too aches with longing for such a son, O ender of Pura —'
Verse 47 (skanda.1.62.47)
कदाहमीदृशं पुत्रं लप्स्याम्यानंददायकम्॥ ॥शर्व उवाच॥ एष एव सुतस्तेस्तु यावदीदृक्परो भवेत्
kadāhamīdṛśaṁ putraṁ lapsyāmyānaṁdadāyakam śarva uvāca eṣa eva sutastestu yāvadīdṛkparo bhavet
'— when shall I obtain such a son, a giver of joy?' Sharva said: 'Let this very one be your son, until one equal to him, or greater, is born.'
Verse 48 (skanda.1.62.48)
इत्युक्ता विजयां प्राह शीघ्रमानय वीरकम्॥ विजया च ततो गत्वा वीरकं वाक्यमब्रवीत्
ityuktā vijayāṁ prāha śīghramānaya vīrakam vijayā ca tato gatvā vīrakaṁ vākyamabravīt
Thus addressed, she said to Vijaya: 'Bring Viraka here quickly.' Vijaya then went and spoke these words to Viraka —
Verse 49 (skanda.1.62.49)
एहि वीरक ते देवी गिरिजा तोषिता शुभा॥ त्वममाह्वयति सा देवी भवस्यानुमते स्वयम्
ehi vīraka te devī girijā toṣitā śubhā tvamamāhvayati sā devī bhavasyānumate svayam
'Come, Viraka — the goddess Girija, well pleased, that auspicious one, herself, with Bhava's consent, summons you.'
Verse 50 (skanda.1.62.50)
इत्युक्तः संभ्रमयुतो मुखं संमार्ज्य पाणिना॥ देव्याः समीपमागच्छज्जययाऽनुगतः शनैः
ityuktaḥ saṁbhramayuto mukhaṁ saṁmārjya pāṇinā devyāḥ samīpamāgacchajjayayā'nugataḥ śanaiḥ
Thus addressed, filled with excitement, wiping his face with his hand, he came, slowly, escorted by Jaya, into the presence of the goddess.
Verse 51 (skanda.1.62.51)
तं दृष्ट्वा गिरिजा प्राह गिरामधुरवर्णया॥ एह्येहि पुत्र दत्तस्त्वं भवेन मम पुत्रकः
taṁ dṛṣṭvā girijā prāha girāmadhuravarṇayā ehyehi putra dattastvaṁ bhavena mama putrakaḥ
Seeing him, Girija said, in a voice sweet of tone: 'Come, come, my son — you have been given to me by Bhava as my own little son.'
Verse 52 (skanda.1.62.52)
इत्युक्तो दंडवद्देवीं प्रणम्यावस्थितः पुरः॥ माता ततस्तमालिंग्य कृत्वोत्संगे च वीरकम्
ityukto daṁḍavaddevīṁ praṇamyāvasthitaḥ puraḥ mātā tatastamāliṁgya kṛtvotsaṁge ca vīrakam
Thus addressed, he bowed to the goddess like a fallen rod and stood before her. Then the mother, embracing him and taking Viraka onto her lap,
Verse 53 (skanda.1.62.53)
चुचुंब च कपोले तं गात्राणि च प्रमार्जयत्॥ भूषयामास दिव्यैस्तं स्वयं नानाविभूषणैः
cucuṁba ca kapole taṁ gātrāṇi ca pramārjayat bhūṣayāmāsa divyaistaṁ svayaṁ nānāvibhūṣaṇaiḥ
kissed him upon the cheek and stroked his limbs; and she herself adorned him with various divine ornaments.
Verse 54 (skanda.1.62.54)
एवं संकल्प्य तं पुत्रं लालयित्वा उमाचिरम्॥ उवाच पुत्र क्रीडेति गच्छ सार्धं गणैरिति
evaṁ saṁkalpya taṁ putraṁ lālayitvā umāciram uvāca putra krīḍeti gaccha sārdhaṁ gaṇairiti
Thus, having accepted him as her son, and having fondled him for a long while, Uma said: 'My son, go now and play together with the ganas.'
Verse 55 (skanda.1.62.55)
ततश्चिक्रीड मध्ये स गणानां पार्वतीसुतः॥ मुहुर्मुहुः स्वमनसि स्तुवन्भक्तिं स शांकरीम्
tataścikrīḍa madhye sa gaṇānāṁ pārvatīsutaḥ muhurmuhuḥ svamanasi stuvanbhaktiṁ sa śāṁkarīm
Then Parvati's son sported in the midst of the ganas, again and again, within his own heart, praising his devotion to the wife of Shankara —
Verse 56 (skanda.1.62.56)
प्रणम्य सर्वभूतानि प्रार्थयाम्यस्मि दुष्करम्॥ भक्त्या भजध्वमीशानं यस्या भक्तेरिदं फलम्
praṇamya sarvabhūtāni prārthayāmyasmi duṣkaram bhaktyā bhajadhvamīśānaṁ yasyā bhakteridaṁ phalam
'Bowing to all beings, I ask of them a difficult thing: worship Ishana with devotion — for this is the fruit of devotion to him.'
Verse 57 (skanda.1.62.57)
क्रीडितुं वीरके याते ततो देवी च पार्वती॥ नानाकथाभिस्चिक्रीड पुनरेव जटाभृता
krīḍituṁ vīrake yāte tato devī ca pārvatī nānākathābhiscikrīḍa punareva jaṭābhṛtā
When Viraka had gone off to play, then the goddess Parvati sported again, with the matted-locked one, in manifold conversation.
Verse 58 (skanda.1.62.58)
ततो गिरिसुताकण्ठे क्षिप्तबाहुर्महेश्वरः॥ तपसस्तु विशेषार्थं नर्म देवीं किलाब्रवीत्
tato girisutākaṇṭhe kṣiptabāhurmaheśvaraḥ tapasastu viśeṣārthaṁ narma devīṁ kilābravīt
Then Maheshvara, his arm cast about the neck of the mountain's daughter, for the particular purpose of teasing her about her austerity, spoke a jesting word to the goddess.
Verse 59 (skanda.1.62.59)
स हि गौरतनुः शर्वो विशेषाच्छशिशोभितः॥ रंजिता च विभावर्या देवी नीलोत्पलच्छविः
sa hi gauratanuḥ śarvo viśeṣācchaśiśobhitaḥ raṁjitā ca vibhāvaryā devī nīlotpalacchaviḥ
For Sharva was of fair, golden body, especially adorned by the moon; and the goddess, tinged by her own former darkness, had the color of a blue lotus.
Verse 60 (skanda.1.62.60)
॥शर्व उवाच॥ शरीरे मम तन्वंगी सिते भास्यसितद्युतिः॥ भुजंगीवासिता शुभ्रे संश्लिष्टा चन्दने तरौ
śarva uvāca śarīre mama tanvaṁgī site bhāsyasitadyutiḥ bhujaṁgīvāsitā śubhre saṁśliṣṭā candane tarau
Sharva said: 'O slender one, upon my fair body you shine with your dark splendor — like a dark serpent-woman coiled about a white sandalwood tree.'
Verse 61 (skanda.1.62.61)
चंद्रज्योत्स्नाभिसंपृक्ता तामसी रजनी यथा॥ रजनी वा सिते पक्षे दृष्टिदोषं ददासि मे
caṁdrajyotsnābhisaṁpṛktā tāmasī rajanī yathā rajanī vā site pakṣe dṛṣṭidoṣaṁ dadāsi me
'Like the dark night mingled with the moon's own light, or like night itself in the bright fortnight — you cause a flaw in my very sight.'
Verse 62 (skanda.1.62.62)
इत्युक्ता गिरिजा तेन कण्ठं शर्वाद्विमुच्य सा॥ उवाच कोपरक्ताक्षी भृकुटीविकृतानना
ityuktā girijā tena kaṇṭhaṁ śarvādvimucya sā uvāca koparaktākṣī bhṛkuṭīvikṛtānanā
Thus addressed, Girija withdrew her neck from Sharva's arm, and, her eyes red with anger, her face contorted with a frown, said —
Verse 63 (skanda.1.62.63)
स्वकृतेन जनः सर्वो जनेन परिभूयते॥ अवश्यमर्थी प्राप्नोति खण्डनां शशिखंडभृत्
svakṛtena janaḥ sarvo janena paribhūyate avaśyamarthī prāpnoti khaṇḍanāṁ śaśikhaṁḍabhṛt
'Every person is disparaged by others according to what he himself has done. He who bears the crescent moon on his head must inevitably meet with mockery.'
Verse 64 (skanda.1.62.64)
तपोभिर्दीप्तचरितैर्यत्त्वां प्रार्थितवत्यहम्॥ तस्य मे नियमस्यैवमवमानः पदेपदे
tapobhirdīptacaritairyattvāṁ prārthitavatyaham tasya me niyamasyaivamavamānaḥ padepade
'That I sought you through austerities, through a life made radiant by discipline — for that vow of mine, this is the insult I receive, again and again.'
Verse 65 (skanda.1.62.65)
नैवाहं कुटिला शर्व विषमा न च धूर्जटे॥ स्वदोषैस्त्वं गतः क्षांतिं तथा दोषाकरश्रियः
naivāhaṁ kuṭilā śarva viṣamā na ca dhūrjaṭe svadoṣaistvaṁ gataḥ kṣāṁtiṁ tathā doṣākaraśriyaḥ
'I am not crooked, O Sharva, nor am I uneven, O bearer of matted locks; it is you who, by your own faults, have lost your patience, and yet delight in the very glory of the flaw-bearer, the moon.'
Verse 66 (skanda.1.62.66)
नाहं मुष्णामि नयने नेत्रहंता भवान्भव॥ भगस्तत्ते विजानाति तथैवेदं जगत्त्रयमा
nāhaṁ muṣṇāmi nayane netrahaṁtā bhavānbhava bhagastatte vijānāti tathaivedaṁ jagattrayamā
'I do not steal anyone's eyes — it is you, O Bhava, who are the destroyer of eyes! Bhaga himself knows this well, and so does this entire three-fold world.'
Verse 67 (skanda.1.62.67)
मूर्ध्नि शूलं जनयसे स्वैर्दोषैर्मामदिक्षिपन्॥ यत्त्वं मामाह कृष्णेति महाकालोऽसि विश्रुतः
mūrdhni śūlaṁ janayase svairdoṣairmāmadikṣipan yattvaṁ māmāha kṛṣṇeti mahākālo'si viśrutaḥ
'You bring the very trident down upon your own head, hurling at me faults that are truly your own — for as you call me the dark one, you yourself are renowned as Mahakala, the great dark one.'
Verse 68 (skanda.1.62.68)
यास्याम्यहं परित्यक्तुमात्मानं तपसा गिरिम्॥ जीवंत्या नास्ति मे कृत्यं धूर्तेन परिभूतया
yāsyāmyahaṁ parityaktumātmānaṁ tapasā girim jīvaṁtyā nāsti me kṛtyaṁ dhūrtena paribhūtayā
'I shall go, to abandon myself upon the mountain through austerity — for me, disgraced by a rogue, there is no purpose left in living.'
Verse 69 (skanda.1.62.69)
निशम्य तस्या वचनं कोपतीक्ष्णाक्षरं भवः॥ उवाचाथ च संभ्रांतो दुर्ज्ञेयचरितो हरः
niśamya tasyā vacanaṁ kopatīkṣṇākṣaraṁ bhavaḥ uvācātha ca saṁbhrāṁto durjñeyacarito haraḥ
Hearing her words, sharp-syllabled with anger, Bhava, Hara, whose ways are hard to fathom, spoke, now himself flustered —
Verse 70 (skanda.1.62.70)
न तत्त्वज्ञासि गिरिजे नाहं निंदापरस्तव॥ चाटूक्तिबुद्ध्या कृतवांस्त वाहं नर्मकीर्तनम्
na tattvajñāsi girije nāhaṁ niṁdāparastava cāṭūktibuddhyā kṛtavāṁsta vāhaṁ narmakīrtanam
'You do not understand the truth, O Girija — I am not one given to reviling you; it was with the intent of a flattering remark that I spoke this jesting word to you.'
Verse 71 (skanda.1.62.71)
विकल्पः स्वच्छचित्तेति गिरिजैषा मम प्रिया॥ प्रायेण भूतिलिप्तानामन्यथा चिंतिता हृदि
vikalpaḥ svacchacitteti girijaiṣā mama priyā prāyeṇa bhūtiliptānāmanyathā ciṁtitā hṛdi
'Girija, of pure heart, is my beloved — this is my true intent; for the most part, the words of those smeared with ash are thought otherwise than they are meant in the hearer's heart.'
Verse 72 (skanda.1.62.72)
अस्मादृशानां कृष्णांगि प्रवर्तंतेऽन्यथा गिरः॥ यद्येवं कुपिता भीरु न ते वक्ष्याम्यहं पुनः
asmādṛśānāṁ kṛṣṇāṁgi pravartaṁte'nyathā giraḥ yadyevaṁ kupitā bhīru na te vakṣyāmyahaṁ punaḥ
'From beings such as us, O dark-limbed one, words come out otherwise than intended. If you are so angered by this, O timid one, I shall not speak so to you again.'
Verse 73 (skanda.1.62.73)
नर्मवादी भविष्यामि जहि कोपं सुचिस्मिते॥ शिरसा प्रणतस्तेऽहं रचितस्ते मयाञ्जलिः
narmavādī bhaviṣyāmi jahi kopaṁ sucismite śirasā praṇataste'haṁ racitaste mayāñjaliḥ
'I shall no longer be one who jests — abandon your anger, O you of the lovely smile. I bow my head to you; I have folded my hands to you in homage.'
Verse 74 (skanda.1.62.74)
दीनेनाप्यपमानेन निंदिता नमि विक्रियाम्॥ वरमस्मि विनम्रोऽपि न त्वं देवि गुणान्विता
dīnenāpyapamānena niṁditā nami vikriyām varamasmi vinamro'pi na tvaṁ devi guṇānvitā
'Even wretched, even disgraced, even reviled, I do not turn to anger. It is better that I remain humble, O goddess, than that you, who are full of virtues, should be so.'
Verse 75 (skanda.1.62.75)
इत्यनेकैश्चाटुवाक्यैः सूक्तैर्देवेन बोधिता॥ कोपं तीव्रं न तत्याज सती मर्मणि घट्टिता
ityanekaiścāṭuvākyaiḥ sūktairdevena bodhitā kopaṁ tīvraṁ na tatyāja satī marmaṇi ghaṭṭitā
Though thus soothed by the god with many flattering, well-turned words, Sati, wounded to the very quick, did not abandon her fierce anger.
Verse 76 (skanda.1.62.76)
अवष्टब्धावथ क्षिप्त्वा पादौ शंकरपाणिना॥ विपर्यस्तालका वेगाद्गन्तुमैच्छत शैलजा
avaṣṭabdhāvatha kṣiptvā pādau śaṁkarapāṇinā viparyastālakā vegādgantumaicchata śailajā
Then, thrusting aside both feet from Shankara's grasping hand, her locks flying in disarray, the mountain's daughter wished to depart in haste.
Verse 77 (skanda.1.62.77)
तस्यां व्रजन्त्यां कोपेन पुनराह पुरांतकः॥ सत्यं सर्वैरवयवैः सुतेति सदृशी पितुः
tasyāṁ vrajantyāṁ kopena punarāha purāṁtakaḥ satyaṁ sarvairavayavaiḥ suteti sadṛśī pituḥ
As she was going, in anger, the ender of Pura spoke again: 'Truly, in every limb, as a daughter, you are just like your father —'
Verse 78 (skanda.1.62.78)
हिमाचलस्य श्रृंगैस्तैर्मेघमालाकुलैर्मनः॥ तथा दुरवागाह्योऽसौ हृदयेभ्यस्तवाशयः
himācalasya śrṛṁgaistairmeghamālākulairmanaḥ tathā duravāgāhyo'sau hṛdayebhyastavāśayaḥ
'— just as the peaks of the Himalaya are wrapped in garlands of cloud, so too is your intent hard indeed for hearts to fathom.'
Verse 79 (skanda.1.62.79)
काठिन्यं कष्टमस्मिंस्ते वनेभ्यो बहुधा गतम्॥ कुटिलत्वं नदीभ्यस्ते दुःसेव्यत्वं हिमादपि
kāṭhinyaṁ kaṣṭamasmiṁste vanebhyo bahudhā gatam kuṭilatvaṁ nadībhyaste duḥsevyatvaṁ himādapi
'This painful hardness of yours has come, in many ways, from his very forests; your crookedness from his rivers, and your unapproachability even from his very snow.'
Verse 80 (skanda.1.62.80)
संक्रांतं सर्वमेवैतत्तव देवी हिमाचलात्॥ इत्युक्ता सा पुनः प्राह गिरिशं सैलजा तदा
saṁkrāṁtaṁ sarvamevaitattava devī himācalāt ityuktā sā punaḥ prāha giriśaṁ sailajā tadā
'All of this, O goddess, has passed into you from the Himalaya himself.' Thus addressed, the mountain's daughter then spoke again to Girisha —
Verse 81 (skanda.1.62.81)
कोपकंपितधूम्रास्या प्रस्फुरद्दशनच्छदा॥ मा शर्वात्मोपमानेन निंद त्वं गुणिनो जनान्
kopakaṁpitadhūmrāsyā prasphuraddaśanacchadā mā śarvātmopamānena niṁda tvaṁ guṇino janān
— her mouth darkened and trembling with rage, her lips quivering: 'Do not, O Sharva, by comparing others to yourself, disparage those who possess real virtues!'
Verse 82 (skanda.1.62.82)
तवापि दुष्टसंपर्कात्संक्रांतं सर्वमेवहि॥ व्यालेभ्योऽनेकजिह्वत्वं भस्मनः स्नेहवन्ध्यता
tavāpi duṣṭasaṁparkātsaṁkrāṁtaṁ sarvamevahi vyālebhyo'nekajihvatvaṁ bhasmanaḥ snehavandhyatā
'For all of this, indeed, has passed into you too, from your evil associations — your many-tongued nature from your serpents, your barrenness of affection from ash,'
Verse 83 (skanda.1.62.83)
हृत्कालुष्यं शशांकात्ते दुर्बोधत्वं वृषादपि॥ अथवा बहुनोक्तेन अलं वाचा श्रमेण मे
hṛtkāluṣyaṁ śaśāṁkātte durbodhatvaṁ vṛṣādapi athavā bahunoktena alaṁ vācā śrameṇa me
'— the impurity of your heart from your moon, and your very obtuseness from your bull as well. But enough of many words — enough of this weariness of speech for me.'
Verse 84 (skanda.1.62.84)
श्मशानवास आसीस्त्वं नग्नत्वान्न तव त्रपा॥ निर्घृणत्वं कपालित्वादेवं कः शक्नुयात्तवं
śmaśānavāsa āsīstvaṁ nagnatvānna tava trapā nirghṛṇatvaṁ kapālitvādevaṁ kaḥ śaknuyāttavaṁ
'Your dwelling in the cremation-ground brought you the shamelessness of your very nakedness; your skull-bearing, your pitilessness. Who indeed could bear to be like you?'
