Chapter 64All chaptersChapter 66

Verse 1 (skanda.1.65.1)

nārada uvāca tataḥ skandaḥ suraiḥ sārdhaṁ śvetaparvata mastakāt uttīrya tārakaṁ hantuṁ dakṣiṇāṁ sa diśaṁ yayau

Narada said: Then Skanda, together with the gods, descended from the summit of the White Mountain and set out toward the southern direction to slay Taraka.

Verse 2 (skanda.1.65.2)

tataḥ sarasvatītīre yāni bhūtāni nārada grahāścopagrahāścaiva vetālāḥ śākinī gaṇāḥ

Then, on the bank of the Sarasvati, O Narada, whatever beings there were — planets and sub-planets, vetalas, bands of shakinis,

Verse 3 (skanda.1.65.3)

unmādā ye hyapasmārāḥ palādāśca piśācakāḥ devaisteṣāmādhipatye so'bhyaṣicyata pāvakiḥ

those causing madness, seizures, ghouls, and pishachas — over all of these the son of Fire was consecrated as lord by the gods,

Verse 4 (skanda.1.65.4)

yathā te naiva maryādāṁ saṁtyajaṁti durāśayāḥ etaistasmātsamākrāṁtaḥ śaraṇyaṁ pāvakiṁ vrajet

so that these evil-minded ones would never transgress their bounds. Hence, one afflicted by them should go for refuge to the son of Fire.

Verse 5 (skanda.1.65.5)

aprakīrṇendriyaṁ dāṁtaṁ śuciṁ nityamataṁdritam āstikaṁ skandabhaktaṁ ca varjayaṁti grahādikāḥ

One whose senses are not scattered, who is self-controlled, pure, ever vigilant, faithful, and devoted to Skanda — such a one the planets and other spirits avoid.

Verse 6 (skanda.1.65.6)

maheśvaraṁ ca ye bhaktā bhaktā nārāyaṇaṁ ca ye teṣāṁ darśanamātreṇa naśyaṁte te vidūrataḥ

And those who are devotees of Maheshvara, and those who are devotees of Narayana — merely by the sight of them, these evil spirits flee far away and perish.

Verse 7 (skanda.1.65.7)

tataḥ sarvaiḥ suraiḥ sārdhaṁ mahītīraṁ yayau guhaḥ tatra devaiḥ prakathitaṁ mahīmāhātmyamuttamam

Then Guha, together with all the gods, went to the bank of the Mahi; there the gods recounted to him the supreme greatness of the Mahi.

Verse 8 (skanda.1.65.8)

śrṛṇvanvisiṣmiye skandaḥ praṇanāma ca tāṁ nadīm tato mahīdakṣiṇatastīramāśritya dhiṣṭhitam

Hearing it, Skanda was astonished and bowed to that river. Then, on the southern bank of the Mahi, he took up his station,

Verse 9 (skanda.1.65.9)

praṇamya śakrapramukhā guhaṁ vacanamabruvan abhiṣiktaṁ vinā skanda senāpatimakalmaṣam

and Indra and the other chief gods, bowing to Guha, spoke these words: "O Skanda, without a stainless commander duly consecrated,"

Verse 10 (skanda.1.65.10)

na śarma labhate senā tasmāttvamabhiṣecaya mahīsāgarasaṁbhūtaiḥ puṇyaiścāpi śivairjalaiḥ

"— the army does not attain well-being; therefore let yourself be consecrated with the sacred and auspicious waters born of the Mahi and the ocean's confluence."

Verse 11 (skanda.1.65.11)

abhiṣekṣyāmahe tvāṁ ca tatra no draṣṭumarhasi yathā hastipade sarvapadāṁtarbhāva iṣyate

"We shall consecrate you there; you should grant us this sight. Just as within the elephant's footprint all other footprints are said to be contained,"

Verse 12 (skanda.1.65.12)

sarvatīrthāntarasthānaṁ tathārṇavamahījale sarvabhūtamayo yadvatryaṁbakaḥ parikīrtyate

"— so in the waters of the ocean and the Mahi, all other sacred fords are contained. Just as Tryambaka is proclaimed to consist of all beings,"

Verse 13 (skanda.1.65.13)

sarvatīrthamayastadvanmahīsāgarasaṁgamaḥ ardhanārīśvaraṁ rūpaṁ yathā rudrasya sarvadam

"— so is the confluence of the Mahi and the ocean the essence of all sacred fords. Just as Rudra's form as Ardhanarishvara bestows everything,"

Verse 14 (skanda.1.65.14)

tathā mahīsamudrasya snānaṁ sarvaphalapradam yenātra pitaraḥ skanda tarpitā bhaktibhāvataḥ

"— so too is bathing at the confluence of the Mahi and ocean the giver of every fruit. O Skanda, by whatever ancestors are here devotedly satisfied with offerings —"

Verse 15 (skanda.1.65.15)

tena sarveṣu tīrtheṣu tarpitā nātra saṁśayaḥ na caitaddhṛdi maṁtavyaṁ kṣārametajjalaṁ hi yat

"— by that, they are satisfied in all sacred fords, without doubt. Nor should this be held in your heart — that this water is merely saline,"

Verse 16 (skanda.1.65.16)

yathā hi kaṭutiktādi gavā grastaṁ hi kṣīradam evametattvidaṁ toyaṁ pitṝṇāṁ tṛpti dāyakam

"— for just as bitter and acrid grasses, once consumed by a cow, become milk-giving, so too this water becomes the giver of satisfaction to the ancestors."

Verse 17 (skanda.1.65.17)

evaṁ bruvatsu deveṣu kapilo'pi munirjagau satyametadumāputra sarvatīrthamayī mahī

While the gods were speaking thus, the sage Kapila too declared: "This is true, O son of Uma — the Mahi is the essence of all sacred fords."

Verse 18 (skanda.1.65.18)

"I too, Kardama, having known the great qualities of this sacred ford, abandoned the whole earth and, having built a hermitage, settled here."

Verse 19 (skanda.1.65.19)

tato maheśvaraḥ prāha satyametatsuroditam brahmādyāstaṁ tathā prāhuratra bhūyo'pyatho guruḥ

Then Maheshvara said: "This spoken by the gods is true." Brahma and the others likewise affirmed it; and then the Guru spoke again:

Verse 20 (skanda.1.65.20)

atrābhiṣekaṁ te vīra kariṣyāmaḥ samādiśa tataḥ suvismitastatra snātvā skando mahāmanāḥ

"O hero, we shall perform your consecration here — give the command." Then Skanda, greatly amazed, the great-minded one, bathed there,

Verse 21 (skanda.1.65.21)

abhiṣiñcantu māṁ devā iti tānabravīdvacaḥ tato'bhiṣekasaṁbhārānsarvānsaṁbhṛtya śāstrataḥ

and spoke these words to them: "Let the gods consecrate me." Then, having gathered all the materials for the consecration according to scripture,
