Maheshvara Khanda · Chapter 71
The Completion of the Account of the Five Lingas
Verse 1 (skanda.1.71.1)
||nārada uvāca|| evaṁ dṛṣṭvā kṣitau tāni liṁgāni harasūnunā|| haribrahmeṁdrapramukhā devāḥ procuḥ parasparam
Narada said: Having thus seen those lingas on earth established by the son of Hara, the gods headed by Hari, Brahma, and Indra said to one another —
Verse 2 (skanda.1.71.2)
aho dhanyaḥ kumāro'yaṁ mahīsāgarasaṁgame|| yena catvārī liṁgāni stāpitāni sudurlabhe
"Ah, blessed indeed is this Kumara, who at the confluence of Mahi and Sagara, a place most rare to attain, has established four lingas!"
Verse 3 (skanda.1.71.3)
vayamapyatra śuddhyarthaṁ toṣārthaṁ skandarudrayoḥ|| sādhvarthe cātmalābhāya kurmo liṁgaparaṁparām
"We too, for the sake of our own purification, for the delight of Skanda and Rudra, for a righteous purpose and for our own benefit, shall make a succession of lingas."
Verse 4 (skanda.1.71.4)
athavā koṭiśo devā munayo naiva saṁkhyayā|| sarve cetsthāpayiṣyaṁti liṁgānyatra mahītaṭe
"Or rather — the gods number in the millions, and the sages beyond count; if all of them were to establish lingas here on the bank of the Mahi,"
Verse 5 (skanda.1.71.5)
pūjā teṣāṁ kataṁ bhāvi bahutvāccātra paṭhyate|| yasya rāṣṭre rudraliṁgaṁ pūjyate naiva śaktitaḥ
"— how could worship be given to each, given such multitude? And it is said: in whatever kingdom a Rudra-linga is not worshipped according to one's ability,"
Verse 6 (skanda.1.71.6)
tasya sīdati tadrāṣṭraṁ durbhikṣavyādhitaskaraiḥ|| saṁbhūya sthāpayiṣyāmo liṁgamekaṁ tataḥ śubham
"— that kingdom suffers from famine, disease, and thieves. Therefore, joining together, we shall establish a single auspicious linga."
Verse 7 (skanda.1.71.7)
iti kṛtvā matiṁ sarve prāpyānujñāṁ maheśvarāt|| praharṣitā suhaścaiva haribrahmamukhāḥ surāḥ
Having thus resolved, and having obtained permission from Maheshvara, the gods headed by Hari and Brahma, filled with delight,
Verse 8 (skanda.1.71.8)
bhūmibhāgaṁ śubhaṁ vīkṣya vijane liṁgamuttamam|| sthāpayāmāsuratha te svayaṁ brahmavinirmitam
— having surveyed an auspicious spot of ground in a solitary place, then established there an excellent linga, itself fashioned by Brahma.
Verse 9 (skanda.1.71.9)
siddhārthaiḥ stāpitaṁ yasmā ddevairbrahmādibhiḥ svayam|| siddheśvaramiti prāha nāma liṁgasya vai guhaḥ
Since it was established by the gods themselves, headed by Brahma, with their purposes accomplished, Guha declared the linga's name to be "Siddheshvara."
Verse 10 (skanda.1.71.10)
sarvairdevaistatra liṁge khānitaṁ sara uttamam|| sarvatīrthodakaiḥ śubhraiḥ pūritaṁ ca mahātmabhiḥ
There, by all the gods, beside that linga, an excellent lake was dug, and it was filled by those great souls with the pure waters of all the tirthas.
Verse 11 (skanda.1.71.11)
etasminnaṁtare pārtha pātālāccheṣanaṁdanaḥ|| kumudonāma āgatya prāha śeṣāhipannagān
Meanwhile, O Partha, from the netherworld, the son of Shesha named Kumuda came and said to the serpent-lords, the sons of Shesha —
Verse 12 (skanda.1.71.12)
asmiṁstārakayuddhe tu pralaṁbonāma dānavaḥ|| palāyitvā skaṁdabhītyā pāpaḥ pātālamāviśat
"In this war with Taraka, a demon named Pralamba, fleeing in fear of Skanda, that wicked one has entered the netherworld!"
Verse 13 (skanda.1.71.13)
sa vo vasūni putrāṁśca bhāryāḥ kanyā gṛhāṇi ca|| vidhvaṁsayati nāgeṁdrāḥ śīghraṁ dhāvatadhāvata
"He is destroying your wealth, your sons, your wives, your daughters, and your homes, O lords of the serpents! Run quickly, run!"
Verse 14 (skanda.1.71.14)
śeṣātmajasya tadvākyaṁ kumadasya niśamyate|| autsukyamāpurnāgeṁdrā yāmayāmeti vādinaḥ
Hearing these words of Kumuda, son of Shesha, the serpent-lords became agitated, crying out, "Let us go, let us go!"
Verse 15 (skanda.1.71.15)
tānnivārya tataḥ skaṁdaḥ kruddhaḥ śaktimathādade|| pātālāya mumocātha procya daityo nihanyatām
Skanda then restrained them, and, enraged, took up his spear; he hurled it toward the netherworld, declaring, "Let the daitya be slain!"
Verse 16 (skanda.1.71.16)
tataḥ skaṁdabhujotsṛṣṭā bhuvaṁ nirbhidya vegataḥ|| praviṣṭā sahasā śaktiryathā daivaṁ naraṁ prati
Then the spear, released from Skanda's arm, splitting through the earth with great speed, entered suddenly, as fate rushes upon a man.
Verse 17 (skanda.1.71.17)
sā taṁ hatvā pralaṁbaṁ ca koṭibhirdaśabhirvṛtam|| naṁdayitvā gatā nāgāñjalakallopūrvikā
Having slain that Pralamba, surrounded by ten million followers, and having delighted the Nagas, it — like a surge of water — departed.
Verse 18 (skanda.1.71.18)
yāṁtyā śaktyā tayā pārtha yatkṛtaṁ vivaraṁ bhuvi|| pātālagaṁgātoyena pūritaṁ pāpahāriṇā
O Partha, the cavity made in the earth by that departing spear was filled with the sin-destroying water of the Patala-Ganga.
Verse 19 (skanda.1.71.19)
tasya nāma dadau skaṁdaḥ siddhakūpa iti smṛtaḥ|| kṛṣmāṣṭamyāṁ caturdaśyāmupavāsī naraḥ svayam
Skanda gave it the name by which it is remembered — "Siddhakupa," the Well of Accomplishment. A man who himself fasts on the eighth or fourteenth day of the dark fortnight,
Verse 20 (skanda.1.71.20)
snātvā kūpe'rcayedīśaṁ siddheśvaramananyadhīḥ|| prabhūtabhavasaṁbhūtapāpaṁ tasya vilīyate
— having bathed in the well, worships the Lord Siddheshvara with an undivided mind — for him, the abundant sin accumulated through worldly existence melts away.
Verse 21 (skanda.1.71.21)
siddhakuṁḍe ca yaḥ snātvā śrāddhaṁ kuryādvicakṣaṇaḥ|| sarvakalmaṣanirmukto bhaktiyogyo bhavebhave
And the wise one who, having bathed in the Siddha-kunda, performs shraddha, is freed from all stain and becomes fit for devotion in birth after birth.
Verse 22 (skanda.1.71.22)
vṛścāpyakṣayastasya tuṣṭo rudro varaṁ dadau|| prayāga vaṭatulyo'yametatsatyaṁ na saṁśayaḥ
And it is imperishable for him — Rudra, pleased, granted this boon: "This place is equal to the Vata of Prayaga; this is true, without doubt."
Verse 23 (skanda.1.71.23)
atrāgatya mahābhāgaḥ kṣāddhaṁ kuryātsubhaktitaḥ|| pitṝṇāmakṣayaṁ tacca sarveṣāṁ piṁḍapātanam
Whoever, having come here, most fortunate, performs shraddha with true devotion — the pinda-offering for all his ancestors becomes imperishable through it.
Verse 24 (skanda.1.71.24)
tato brahmādayo devāḥ skaṁdena sahitāstadā|| siddhāṁbikāṁ mahāśaktiṁ prārthayāmāsurīśvarīm
Then the gods headed by Brahma, together with Skanda, entreated the great Shakti, the sovereign goddess Siddhambika.
Verse 25 (skanda.1.71.25)
tvayāviṣṭo hi bhagavānmatsyarūpī janārdanaḥ|| jagaduddhāraṇārthāya cakre karmāmyanekaśaḥ
"Pervaded by you, the blessed Janardana, in the form of a fish, performed his many deeds for the sake of raising up the world."
Verse 26 (skanda.1.71.26)
Thus they entreated her: "O auspicious one, nothing here is to be forsaken by you. All these mighty Kshetrapalas are stationed here —"
Verse 27 (skanda.1.71.27)
aṣṭamyāṁ vā caturdaśyāṁ balipuṣpaiśca tvāṁ śubhe|| ye pūjayaṁti te pālyāḥ sarvāpatsu ca yā sadā
"— on the eighth or the fourteenth lunar day, O auspicious one, with offerings and flowers, whoever worships you — they are to be protected, always, in every calamity."
Verse 28 (skanda.1.71.28)
evamuktā siddhamātā tatheti pratyapadyata|| sthāpayāmāsuratha tāṁ liṁgāduttarabhāgataḥ
Thus addressed, the Mother of Accomplishment consented, saying "So be it." They then established her to the north of the linga.
Verse 29 (skanda.1.71.29)
tataḥ kṣetrapatīndevāścatuḥṣaṣṭiṁ maheśvaram|| siddheyaṁ nāma kṣetrasya rakṣārthaṁ nidadhuḥ svayam
Then the gods themselves placed there, for the protection of the sacred field named "Siddha," the sixty-four Kshetrapatis, together with Maheshvara.
Verse 30 (skanda.1.71.30)
tvāṁ ca ye pūjayiṣyaṁti kāryārabheṣu sarvadā|| varṣe varṣe rājamāṣabalinā ca viśeṣataḥ
"Whoever shall worship you at the outset of any undertaking, always, and especially year by year with an offering of black gram —"
Verse 31 (skanda.1.71.31)
tānasau pālayettuṣṭaḥ pitā lokāniva svakān|| siddhikṛto devāstatra siddhivināyakam
"— him, pleased, may he protect, as a father protects his own children." There the accomplishing gods established Siddhi-Vinayaka —
Verse 32 (skanda.1.71.32)
kaparditanayaṁ prārthya sthāpayācakrire mudā|| taṁ ca ye pūjayaṁtyatra kāryāraṁbheṣu sarvadā
— having entreated the son of Kapardin, they joyfully established him there. And whoever worships him here, always, at the beginning of any undertaking —
Verse 33 (skanda.1.71.33)
teṣāṁ siddhiṁ dadātyeṣa prabalo vighnarāḍbhavaḥ|| yadyatra pūjayedyastu satataṁ siddhasaptakam
— to them this mighty Lord of Obstacles grants success. And whoever continually worships, in this place, the sevenfold Siddha group —
Verse 34 (skanda.1.71.34)
paśyedvā smarate vāpi sarvadoṣairvimucyate|| siddheśvaraḥ siddhavaṭaśca sākṣātsiddhāṁbikā siddhavināyakaśca|| siddheyakṣetrādhipatiśca siddhasarastathā siddhakūpaśca sapta
— or beholds it, or even merely remembers it, is freed from all faults. Siddheshvara, and the Siddha-vata banyan, and Siddhambika herself present, and Siddhi-Vinayaka,
Verse 35 (skanda.1.71.35)
atra tuṣṭo dadau rudraḥ surāṇāṁ durlabhānvarān|| vaiśākhamāsasyāṣṭamyāṁ kṛṣṇāyāṁ siddhakūpake
and the Lord of the Siddha field, and the Siddha-lake, and the Siddha-well — these seven. Here, pleased, Rudra granted the gods boons hard to obtain.
Verse 36 (skanda.1.71.36)
snātvā piṁḍānvaṭe kṛtvā pūjayanmāṁ ca siddhabhāk|| sadā yo'bhyarcayenmāṁ ca brahmacārī jiteṁdriyaḥ
"On the eighth day of the dark fortnight of Vaishakha, having bathed in the Siddha-well, and having offered pindas at the banyan tree, whoever worships me shares in accomplishment —"

aṣṭāviṣṭakarā nityaṁ bhaveyustasya siddhayaḥ|| maṁtrajāpyaṁ baliṁ homamatra yaḥ kurute naraḥ
"— whoever always worships me thus, celibate and self-controlled, for him the eight desired accomplishments shall constantly be his."
Verse 38 (skanda.1.71.38)
ekacittaḥ śucirbhūtvā so'bhūṣṭāṁ siddhimāpnuyāt|| samāhitamanāścātha siddheśaṁ yastu paśyati
"Whatever man performs mantra-recitation, offering, and homa here, with one-pointed mind, having become pure — he obtains the desired accomplishment."
Verse 39 (skanda.1.71.39)

tasya siddhirbhavatyeva vighnairyadi na hanyate|| siddhāṁbikā mahādevī hyatra saṁnihitāsti yā

"The great goddess Siddhambika, who is present here — she is the giver of success to the foremost of practitioners, to those who recite the great vidya —"
Verse 41 (skanda.1.71.41)
maṁtrajāpyāddadātyeṣā sarvasiddhīryathopsitāḥ|| pātālasya bilaṁ caitadguhaśaktyā kṛtaṁ mahat
"— to the steadfast, to celibates, and to those of truthful mind. Through mantra-recitation, she grants all the accomplishments, exactly as desired."
Verse 42 (skanda.1.71.42)
siddhāṁ bikāprasādena vighnakṣetrapayormama|| pratyakṣaṁ bhavitā yatra nānāścaryāṇi bhūriśaḥ
"And this great chasm to the netherworld, made by the power of Guha's spear — by the grace of Siddhambika, of the Lord of Obstacles, and of the Kshetrapalas, and by mine,"
Verse 43 (skanda.1.71.43)
atra siddhiṁ prayāsyaṁti koṭiśaḥ puruṣāḥ surāḥ|| vidyādharatvaṁ devatvaṁ gaṁdharvatvaṁ ca nāgatā

"the status of Vidyadharas, of gods, of Gandharvas, of Nagas, of Yakshas, and the state of the immortals — practitioners shall attain these here."
Verse 45 (skanda.1.71.45)

"Here indeed, by the power of the altar-ground named 'Vijaya,' one who worships Siddhambika shall attain a success hard to obtain."
Verse 46 (skanda.1.71.46)
||nārada uvāca|| tryaṁbakeṇa vareṣvevaṁ datteṣvapi surottamāḥ
"Whoever shall behold me established here, and whoever shall worship me — even through mere discussion or propagation of this — merit shall be theirs."
Verse 47 (skanda.1.71.47)
prahṛṣṭāḥ samapadyaṁta gāthāṁ cemāṁ jagustadā|| tena yajñairjapaiḥstotraistapo bhistoṣitā vayam
Narada said: When Tryambaka had thus granted these boons, the foremost of the gods became greatly delighted, and then sang this verse of praise:
Verse 48 (skanda.1.71.48)
sarve devāḥ siddhiliṁgaṁ yo naraḥ pūjayiṣyati|| sarvakāmaphalāvāptirityevaṁ śaṁkaro'bravīt
"By him we, all the gods, are satisfied through sacrifices, japa, hymns, and austerities. Whatever man shall worship the Siddhi-linga —"
Verse 49 (skanda.1.71.49)
ityuktvā te jayaṁ prāptāḥ skaṁdena sahitāḥ surāḥ|| kārāyyaṁ ramyaprāsādānramyaistārakasaṁbhavaiḥ
"— he shall obtain the fruit of all his desires." Thus spoke Shankara. Having said this, the gods, together with Skanda, having attained victory,
Verse 50 (skanda.1.71.50)
caturvargaphalāvāptiṁ dattvā kṣetrasya saṁyayuḥ|| kecitskaṁdaṁ praśaṁsaṁtastīrthamanye hariṁ pare
caused beautiful temples to be built with the beautiful wealth won from Taraka; and, having granted the field the attainment of the four aims of life, they went their way.
Verse 51 (skanda.1.71.51)
kecilliṁgāni paṁcāpi yuddhaṁ keciddivaṁ yayuḥ|| tatoṁ'tarikṣe cāliṁgya mahāsenaṁ haro'bravīt
Some, praising Skanda; others, the tirtha; others, Hari; some, the five lingas; some, the battle — thus praising, they went to heaven.
Verse 52 (skanda.1.71.52)
saptame mārutaskaṁdhe va sa nityaṁ priyātmaja|| kāryeṣvahaṁ tvayā putra saṁpraṣṭavyaḥ sadaiva hi
Then, in the sky, embracing Mahasena, Hara said: "Dwell always, O beloved son, upon the seventh region of the wind —"
Verse 53 (skanda.1.71.53)
darśanānmama bhaktyā ca śreyaḥ paramavāpsyasi|| staṁbhatīrthe ca vatsye'haṁ na vimokṣyāmi karhicit
"— in all undertakings, O son, I am ever to be consulted by you. Through the sight of me, and through devotion, you shall obtain the supreme good."
Verse 54 (skanda.1.71.54)
ityuktvā visasarjainaṁ pariṣvajya maheśvaraḥ|| brahmaviṣṇumukhāṁścaiva bhaktyā tairabhinaṁditaḥ
"And I shall dwell at Stambhatirtha; I shall never abandon it." Having said this, Maheshvara, embracing him, let him go.
Verse 55 (skanda.1.71.55)
visarjitāḥ surājagmuḥ svānisvānyālayāni ca|| śarvo jagāma kailāsaṁ skaṁdhaṁ vai saptamaṁ guhaḥ
Honored with devotion by Brahma, Vishnu, and the others, and having taken leave, the gods went to their own respective abodes.
Verse 56 (skanda.1.71.56)
ityetatkathitaṁ pārtha liṁgapaṁcakasaṁbhavam|| yaḥ paṭhetskaṁdasaṁbaddhāṁ kathāṁ martyo mahāmatiḥ
Sharva went to Kailasa; Guha to the seventh Skandha. Thus, O Partha, has been told this account of the origin of the five lingas.
Verse 57 (skanda.1.71.57)
śrṛṇuyācchrāvayedvāpi sa bhavetkīrtimānnaraḥ|| bahvāyuḥ subhagaḥ śrīmānkāṁtimāñchubhadarśanaḥ
