Maheshvara Khanda · Chapter 82
The Narrative of the Fourteen Goddesses
Verse 1 (skanda.1.82.1)
|| nārada uvāca || || tato mayāsya tīrthasya rakṣaṇāya punarjaya || samārādhya yathā devyaḥ sthāpitāstacchṛṇuṣva bhoḥ||
Narada said: O Punarjaya, after this, for the protection of this tirtha, hear now how I worshipped and established the goddesses here.
Verse 2 (skanda.1.82.2)
yathātmā sarvabhūteṣu vyāpakaḥ parameśvaraḥ || tathaiva prakṛtirnityā vyāpakā parameśvarī||
Just as the Supreme Lord, as the Self, pervades all beings, so too does eternal Prakriti, as the Supreme Goddess, pervade all things equally.
Verse 3 (skanda.1.82.3)
śakti prasādādāpnoti vīryaṁ sarvāśca saṁpadaḥ || īśvarī sarvabhūteṣu sā caivaṁ pārtha saṁsthitā||
It is through the grace of Shakti that potency and every kind of prosperity is obtained. O Partha, that Goddess dwells, in this very manner, within all beings.
Verse 4 (skanda.1.82.4)
buddhihrīpuṣṭilajjeti tuṣṭiḥ śāṁtiḥ kṣamā spṛhā || śraddhā ca cetanā śaktirmaṁtrotsāhaprabhūdbhavā||
Intellect, modesty, nourishment, shame, contentment, peace, forgiveness, longing, faith, consciousness, power, mantra, and enthusiasm — all of these arise from her alone.
Verse 5 (skanda.1.82.5)
iyameva ca baṁdhāya mokṣāyeyaṁ ca sarvadā || enāmārādhya caiśvaryamindrādyāḥ samavāpnuyuḥ||
This same Goddess is the cause of bondage, and she is also, forever, the cause of liberation. By worshipping her, Indra and the other gods obtained their divine glory.
Verse 6 (skanda.1.82.6)
ye ca śaktiṁ na manyaṁte tiraskurvaṁti cādhamāḥ || yogīndrā api te vyaktaṁ bhraśyaṁte kāśijā yathā||
Those base people who do not honor Shakti, and who scorn her, plainly fall from their state, even if they be masters of yoga themselves — just as happened at Kashi.
Verse 7 (skanda.1.82.7)
vārāṇasyāṁ kila purā siddhayogīśvarāḥ punaḥ || avamanya ca te śaktiṁ punarbhraṁśamupāgatāḥ||
In Varanasi, long ago, even accomplished masters of yoga, having disrespected Shakti, once again fell from their attainment.
Verse 8 (skanda.1.82.8)
tasmātsadā dehineyaṁ śaktiḥ pūjyaiva nityadā || tuṣṭā dadāti sā kāmānruṣṭā saṁharate kṣaṇāt||
Therefore every embodied being should always, without fail, worship this Shakti. When pleased, she grants every desire; when angered, she destroys in an instant.
Verse 9 (skanda.1.82.9)
paramā prakṛtiḥ sā ca bahubhedairvyavasthitā || tāsāṁ madhye mahādevyo hyatra saṁsthāpitāḥ śṛṇu||
That Supreme Prakriti exists in many differentiated forms. Hear now of the great goddesses among them who have been established here.
Verse 10 (skanda.1.82.10)
catasrastu mahāśaktyaścaturdikṣu vyavasthitāḥ || siddhāṁbikā tu pūrvasyāṁ sthāpitā sā guhena ca||
Four great powers stand established in the four directions. In the east, Siddhambika was established by Guha, Kartikeya.
Verse 11 (skanda.1.82.11)
jagadādau mūlūprakṛterutpannā sā prakīrtyate || ārādhitā yataḥ siddhaistasmātsiddhāṁbikā ca sā||
She is said to have arisen from the primordial Prakriti at the very beginning of the universe. Since she was worshipped by the accomplished sages, she came to be called Siddhambika.
Verse 12 (skanda.1.82.12)
dakṣiṇasyāṁ tathā tārā saṁsthitā sthāpitā mayā || tāraṇārthāya devānāṁ yasmātkūrmaṁ samāśritā||
In the south stands the goddess Tara, established by me. For the deliverance of the gods, she it was who took refuge in the form of the tortoise.
Verse 13 (skanda.1.82.13)
yayāviṣṭaḥ samujjahre vedānkūrmo jagadguruḥ || anayāviṣṭadehaśca budho bauddhānhaniṣyati||
Infused by her power, the tortoise, teacher of the world, retrieved the Vedas. And, entered into his body by her, Budha, the future incarnation, shall destroy the Buddhists.
Verse 14 (skanda.1.82.14)
koṭiśo vedamārgasya dhvaṁsakānpāpakarmiṇaḥ|| iyaṁ mayā samārādhya samānītā gireḥ sutā||
— those sinful destroyers of the Vedic path, numbering in the tens of millions. It was this very daughter of the mountain, Tara, whom I brought here through my own worship of her.
Verse 15 (skanda.1.82.15)
koṭisaṁkhyābhiratyugradevībhiḥ saṁvṛtā ca sā || dakṣiṇāṁ diśamāśritya saṁsthitā mama gauravāt||
Surrounded by tens of millions of exceedingly fierce goddesses, she stands established, taking her place in the southern direction, out of regard for me.
Verse 16 (skanda.1.82.16)
paścimāyāṁ tathā devī saṁsthitā bhāskarā śubhā || yayāviṣṭāni bhāsaṁte bhāskarapramukhāni ca||
In the west stands the auspicious goddess Bhaskara, infused by whose power the Sun and other luminaries shine forth.
Verse 17 (skanda.1.82.17)
biṁbāni sarvatārāṇāṁ gacchantyāyāṁti ca drutam || saiṣā mahābalā śaktirbhāsvarā kurunandana||
The very orbs of all the stars move to and fro swiftly through her power. O scion of Kuru, this is that mighty, radiant power.
Verse 18 (skanda.1.82.18)
mayārādhya samānītā kaṭāhādatra saṁsthitā || koṭikoṭivṛtā nityaṁ trāyate paścimāṁ diśam||
I worshipped her and brought her here from Kataha, and established her here. Surrounded by tens of millions upon tens of millions of goddesses, she ever protects the western direction.
Verse 19 (skanda.1.82.19)
uttarasyāṁ tathā devī saṁsthitā yoganaṁdinī || paramaprakṛterdehātpūrvaṁ niḥsṛtayā yayā||
In the north stands the goddess Yoganandini, who in ancient times emerged from the very body of the Supreme Prakriti.
Verse 20 (skanda.1.82.20)
dṛṣṭyā dṛṣṭā nirmalayā yogamāpuścatuḥsanāḥ || yogīśvarī ca sā devī sanakādyaiḥ sutoṣitā||
Beheld by her stainless gaze, the four Kumaras, Sanaka and the rest, attained yoga. She is the goddess Yogishvari, well pleased by Sanaka and his brothers.
Verse 21 (skanda.1.82.21)
saiva cāṁḍakaṭāhānme samārādhyātra prāpitā || yoginībhiḥ parivṛtā saṁsthitā cottarāṁ diśam||
This same goddess I too brought here, worshipping her from the very shell of the cosmic egg. Surrounded by yoginis, she stands established in the northern direction.
Verse 22 (skanda.1.82.22)
evametā mahāśaktyaścatasraḥ saṁsthitāḥ sadā || pūjitāḥ kāmadā nityaṁ ruṣṭāḥ saṁharaṇakṣamāḥ||
Thus do these four great powers stand established forever. When worshipped, they ever fulfill desires; when angered, they are capable of utter destruction.
Verse 23 (skanda.1.82.23)
tataśca nava me durgāḥ samānītāḥ śṛṇudhva tāḥ||
After this, hear of the nine forms of Durga that I brought here.
Verse 24 (skanda.1.82.24)
tripurānāma paramā devī sthāṇuryayā purā || āviṣṭastripuraṁ ninye bhasmatvaṁ jagadīśvaraḥ||
There is the supreme goddess named Tripura, infused with whose power Sthanu, Shiva, the Lord of the universe, once reduced the triple city to ashes.
Verse 25 (skanda.1.82.25)
tripureti tatastāṁ tu proktavānbhagavānharaḥ || tuṣṭāva ca svayaṁ tasmātpūjyā sā jagatāmapi||
Then Lord Hara called her by the name Tripura, and himself sang her praises. For this reason she is worthy of worship by the entire universe as well.
Verse 26 (skanda.1.82.26)
sā cārādhya samānītā mayāmareśvaraparvatāt || bhaktānāṁ kāmadā sāsti bhaṭṭādityasamīpataḥ||
Worshipping her, I brought her here from Mount Amareshvara. She dwells near Bhattaditya, fulfilling the desires of her devotees.
Verse 27 (skanda.1.82.27)
aparā cāpi kolaṁbā mahāśaktiḥ sanātanī || kolarūpī yayāviṣṭaḥ keśavaścojjahāra gām||
There is another eternal great power named Kolamba, infused with whose power Keshava, taking the form of a boar, once rescued the earth.
Verse 28 (skanda.1.82.28)
tasmātsā viṣṇunā coktā kolaṁbeti stutārcitā || sā ca devī mayā pārtha bhaktiyogena toṣitā||
For this reason, Vishnu called her by the name Kolamba and offered her praise and worship. O Partha, I too pleased that goddess through the discipline of devotion.
Verse 29 (skanda.1.82.29)
vārāhagirisaṁsthā māṁ samānītā ca sābravīt || yatrāhaṁ nārada sadā tiṣṭhāmi kṛpayārthinām ||||
That goddess, residing on Mount Varaha, brought me there and said: "O Narada, where I dwell always, out of compassion for those who seek me,"
Verse 30 (skanda.1.82.30)
tatra kūpena saṁstheyaṁ rudrāṇīsaṁsthitena vai || taṁ hi kūpaṁ vinā mahyaṁ na ratirjāyate kvacit||
"— there I remain, established together with a well infused with Rudrani herself. Without that well, I find contentment nowhere at all."
Verse 31 (skanda.1.82.31)
tasmādbhavānkūpavaraṁ svayamatra khana dvija || evamukte pārtha devyā darbhamūlena me tadā||
"Therefore, O brahmin, you yourself should dig an excellent well here." O Partha, when the goddess had spoken thus, I then, with a blade of kusha grass —
Verse 32 (skanda.1.82.32)
kūpo'khani yatra sākṣādrudrāṇī kūpa ābabhau || tato mayā tatra devāḥ snātvā japtvā ca tarpitāḥ||
— dug a well, in which Rudrani herself manifested in the very form of that well. Then, bathing there and reciting mantras, I satisfied the gods with offerings.
Verse 33 (skanda.1.82.33)
pūjitā ca tato daivī kolaṁbā jagadīśvarī || parituṣṭā tadā devī praṇataṁ mā tato'bravīt||
Then the divine Kolamba, Lord of the universe, was worshipped. Then that goddess, thoroughly pleased, spoke to me, bowed as I was before her:
Verse 34 (skanda.1.82.34)
sadātra cāhaṁ sthāsyāmi prasādaṁ prāpitā tvayā || ye ca kūpetra saṁsnātvā māghāṣṭamyāṁ viśeṣataḥ||
"I shall remain here forever; you have won my favor. Whoever, especially on the eighth day of Magha, bathes in this well,"
Verse 35 (skanda.1.82.35)
pūjayiṣyaṁti māṁ martyāsteṣāṁ chetsyāmi duṣkṛtam || sarvatīrthamayī yaśca sarvartukavanesthitaḥ||
"— and worships me, of such mortals I shall utterly sever every misdeed. This place, situated within a grove of trees of every season, embodying every sacred tirtha,"
Verse 36 (skanda.1.82.36)
meroḥ samīpe rudrāṇyāḥ kūpa eṣa sa eva ca||
"— is that very well of Rudrani that stands near Mount Meru."
Verse 37 (skanda.1.82.37)
prayāgādapi gaṁgāyā gayāyāśca viśeṣataḥ || kūpesminnadhikaṁ snānaṁ mayā nārada kīrtitam||
"O Narada, I have declared that bathing in this well is even more meritorious than bathing at Prayaga, at the Ganga, or especially at Gaya."
Verse 38 (skanda.1.82.38)
tadahaṁ tava vākyena saṁsthitātra tapodhana || guhenātha saraḥ puṇyaṁ pālayiṣyāmyataṁdritā||
"Therefore, O rich in penance, I have taken my place here at your word. I shall tirelessly guard this sacred lake, made known through Guha."
Verse 39 (skanda.1.82.39)
kumāreśaṁ pūjayitvā pūjayiṣyaṁti ye ca mām || devībhiḥ ṣaṣṭikoṭībhiryutā teṣāmabhīṣṭadā||
Whoever, having worshipped Kumara, worships me as well — I, accompanied by sixty million goddesses, shall grant them their heart's desires.
Verse 40 (skanda.1.82.40)
|| nārada uvāca || || ityukto'haṁ pārtha devyā tadānīṁ prīyamāṇayā || pratyabravaṁ pramuditaḥ kolaṁbāṁ viśvamātaram||
Narada said: O Partha, when the goddess, greatly pleased, had spoken thus to me, I too, filled with joy, replied to Kolamba, the mother of the universe:
Verse 41 (skanda.1.82.41)
atrāsya mātā tvaṁ devi guptakṣetrasyakāraṇam || tīrthayātrā vṛthā teṣāṁ nārccayaṁtīha tvāṁ ca ye||
"O Goddess, you are indeed the mother and the very cause of this hidden field. For those who do not worship you here, their pilgrimage is entirely in vain."
Verse 42 (skanda.1.82.42)
idaṁ ca yatsaraḥ puṇyaṁ tvannāmnā khyātimeṣyati || īśvarī saraso'sya tvaṁ tīrthasyāsya tatheśvarī||
"This sacred lake shall become renowned by your very name. You are the sovereign mistress both of this lake and of this tirtha."
Verse 43 (skanda.1.82.43)
evaṁ dīrghaṁ tapastaptvā sthāpitā mayakā śubhā || mahādurgā naraistasmātpūjyeyaṁ satataṁ budhaiḥ||
Thus, through prolonged penance, I established that auspicious Mahadurga here. Therefore the wise among men should worship her continually.
Verse 44 (skanda.1.82.44)
tṛtīyā ca diśi tasyāṁ sthitā saṁsthāpitā mayā || guhena ca kapāleśyāḥ prabhāvosyāḥ pureritaḥ||
A third goddess stands established in that same direction, set there by me. The power of this Kapaleshvari has already been declared by Guha.
Verse 45 (skanda.1.82.45)
dhanyāste ye prapaśyaṁti nityamenāṁ narottamāḥ || kapāleśvaramabhyarcya viśvaśaktiriyaṁ yataḥ||
Blessed indeed are those foremost of men who behold this goddess daily, for she, this power of the universe, is worshipped together with Kapaleshvara.
Verse 46 (skanda.1.82.46)
evametāstisro durgāḥ pūrvasyāṁ diśi saṁsthitāḥ || paścimāyāṁ pravakṣyāmi tisro durgā mahottamā||
Thus do these three forms of Durga stand established in the eastern direction. Now I shall describe the three most excellent forms of Durga in the western direction.
Verse 47 (skanda.1.82.47)
suvarṇākṣī tu yā devī brahmāṁḍaparipālinī || sā mayātra samārādhya tīrthe devī niveśitā ||||
The goddess named Suvarnakshi, the protectress of the entire universe, I worshipped and established here at this tirtha.
Verse 48 (skanda.1.82.48)
ye caināṁ praṇamiṣyaṁti pūjayiṣyaṁti bhaktitaḥ || trayastriṁśadbhiḥ koṭībhirdevībhiḥ pūjitā ca taiḥ||
Whoever bows to her and worships her with devotion is deemed thereby to have worshipped even the three hundred and thirty million goddesses.
Verse 49 (skanda.1.82.49)
aparā ca mahādurgā carcitā ceti saṁsthitā | rasātalatalāttatra mayānītā subhaktitaḥ||
There is another Mahadurga, known by the name Charchita, established here, whom I brought, with the greatest devotion, up from the very depths of the netherworld.
Verse 50 (skanda.1.82.50)
iyamarcyā ca ciṁtyā ca vīratvaṁ samabhīpsubhiḥ || bahubhirdevadaiteyairdadau tebhyaśca vīratām||
Those who desire heroism should worship and meditate upon her. She has bestowed heroic valor upon many gods and daityas alike.
Verse 51 (skanda.1.82.51)
iyameva mahādurgā śūdrakaṁ vīrasattamam | caurairbaddhaṁ kalau cāgre mokṣayiṣyati vikramāt||
This very Mahadurga shall, in the future Kali age, through her own might, deliver the noblest of heroes, Shudraka, when he is bound by thieves.
Verse 52 (skanda.1.82.52)
tatastvetāṁ sa cārādhya vīreṁdratvamavāpsyati || nihaniṣyati cākramya kālasenamukhānripūn||
Then, worshipping her, he shall attain the very sovereignty of heroes, and, launching his attack, shall slay his enemies, led by Kalasena.
Verse 53 (skanda.1.82.53)
tasmādiyaṁ samārādhyā vīryakāmairnaraiḥ sadā || carcitā yā mahādurgā paścimāyāṁ diśi sthitā||
Therefore men who desire strength and valor should always worship this Mahadurga Charchita, who stands established in the western direction.
Verse 54 (skanda.1.82.54)
tathā trailokyavijayā tṛtīyasyāṁ diśi sthitā | yāmārādhya jayaṁ prāptastrilokyāṁ rohiṇīpatiḥ || somalokānmayānītā pūjitā jayadā sadā||
The third goddess is Trailokyavijaya, established in that same direction, by worshipping whom Rohini's lord, the Moon, attained victory throughout the three worlds. I brought her here from the world of the Moon, and, ever worshipped, she grants victory.
Verse 55 (skanda.1.82.55)
evametāḥ paścimāyāmuttarasyāmataḥ śṛṇu || tisro devyaścottarasyāmekavīrāmukhāḥ sthitāḥ||
Thus are the goddesses of the west. Now hear of those of the north. Three goddesses, led by Ekavira, stand established in the northern direction.
Verse 56 (skanda.1.82.56)
ekavīreti yā devī sākṣātsā śivapūjitā || yayāviṣṭo jagatsarvaṁ saṁharatyeṣa bhūtarāṭ||
The goddess known as Ekavira is worshipped by Shiva himself. Infused with her power, this lord of the ghostly hosts brings about the destruction of the entire universe.
Verse 57 (skanda.1.82.57)
vīryeṇādyekavīrāyāḥ kṛtvā lokāṁśca bhasmasāt || yugaikādaśapūrṇatve vilakṣo'bhūtsa bhasmani||
With the might of Ekavira, having reduced all the worlds to ashes, at the completion of eleven ages he himself, too, dissolved into that very ash.
Verse 58 (skanda.1.82.58)
evaṁvidhā tvekavīrā śaktireṣā sanātanī || pūjitārādhitā caiva sarvābhīpsitadā nṛṇām ||||
Such is Ekavira, this eternal power. When worshipped and propitiated, she grants men every desire of their hearts.
Verse 59 (skanda.1.82.59)
brahmalokātsamānītā mayārādhyātra bhārata || nāmakīrtanamapyasyā duṣṭānāṁ ghātanaṁ viduḥ||
O Bharata, I worshipped her and brought her here from the world of Brahma. Even the mere chanting of her name is known to destroy the wicked.
Verse 60 (skanda.1.82.60)
dvitīyā harasiddhyākhyā devī durgā mahābalā || śīkottarātsamārādhya mayānītātra pāṁḍava||
The second goddess is the mighty Durga known as Harasiddhi. O Pandava, I worshipped her and brought her here from the land of Shikottara.
Verse 61 (skanda.1.82.61)
yadā śīkottarasthena pārvatyā prārthitena ca || rudreṇa ḍākinīmaṁtraḥ prokto devyāḥ kṛpālunā||
When Rudra, residing in Shikottara, being entreated by Parvati, compassionately taught the Dakini-mantra to the Goddess,
Verse 62 (skanda.1.82.62)
tadā maṁtraprabhāveṇa mohitā girijā satī || tamevākramya māṁsaṁ ca śoṇitaṁ ca bhavaṁ papau||
— then, deluded by the power of that very mantra, the chaste Girija attacked Bhava, Shiva, himself, and drank his flesh and blood.
Verse 63 (skanda.1.82.63)
tato rudraśarīrāttu viniṣkrāṁtārtināśinī || harasiddhirmahādurgā mahāmaṁtraviśāradā||
Then, from Rudra's own body, there emerged the sorrow-destroying Mahadurga Harasiddhi, skilled in the great mantras.
Verse 64 (skanda.1.82.64)
sā sahasrabhujā devī samākramyābhipīḍya ca || mokṣayāmāsa giriśamaśāpayata tāṁ tathā||
That thousand-armed goddess overpowered and subdued Parvati, thereby freeing Girisha, Shiva, and thereupon also pronounced a curse upon her.
Verse 65 (skanda.1.82.65)
tataḥ prabhṛti sā loke harasiddhiḥ prakīrtyate || devīnāṁ ṣaṣṭikoṭībhirāvṛtā pūjyate suraiḥ||
From that time on, she became renowned in the world by the name Harasiddhi. Surrounded by sixty million goddesses, she is worshipped even by the gods.
Verse 66 (skanda.1.82.66)
etāmārādhya sugrīvapramukhā doṣanāśinīm||| abhūvantsumahāvīryā ḍākinīsaṁghanāśanāḥ||
By worshipping this very fault-destroying goddess, Sugriva and others became of the greatest valor and destroyers of hosts of dakinis.
Verse 67 (skanda.1.82.67)
tasmādetāṁ pūjayettu manovākkāyakarmabhiḥ || ḍākinyādyā na sarpaṁti harasiddheranaṁtaram||
Therefore she should be worshipped in mind, speech, and body. After the worship of Harasiddhi, dakinis and the like never approach.
Verse 68 (skanda.1.82.68)
tṛtīyeśānakoṇasthā caṁḍikā navamī sthitā || vāgīśo'pi labhetpāraṁ naiva yasyāḥ pravarṇane||
The third goddess, situated in the northeast corner, is Chandika, standing as the ninth. Even Brihaspati, lord of speech himself, could not reach the end of describing her.
Verse 69 (skanda.1.82.69)
yā purā pārvatīdehādviniḥsṛtya mahāsurau || caṁḍamuṁḍau nihatyaiva bhakṣayāmāsa krodhataḥ||
She who, in ancient times, emerged from Parvati's own body, and, having slain the great demons Chanda and Munda, devoured them in her fury,
Verse 70 (skanda.1.82.70)
akṣauhiṇīśataṁ tvekaṁ caṁḍamuṁḍau ca tāvubhau || nāpūryataikagrāso'syāḥ kiṁlakṣyā yātviyaṁ hi sā||
A single hundred akshauhinis of army, together with both Chanda and Munda, could not even fill a single mouthful for her — such is she, whose power is beyond all measure!
Verse 71 (skanda.1.82.71)
iyamevāṁdhakānāṁ ca tṛṣitā śoṇitaṁ punaḥ || papau tato nijagrāha cāṁdhakaṁ bhagavānbhavaḥ||
This same goddess, thirsting for the blood of the demon Andhaka, drank it again and again, until Lord Bhava himself finally seized Andhaka.
Verse 72 (skanda.1.82.72)
iyaṁ ca raktabījānāṁ kṛtvā pānaṁ ca raktajam || arpayāmāsa taṁ devyāścāmuṇḍāpītaśoṇitam||
It was she who drank the blood-born demons arising from the blood of Raktabija, and, through that very drinking of blood, that same goddess became renowned as Chamunda.
Verse 73 (skanda.1.82.73)
eṣā tṛpyati bhaktānāṁ praṇāmenāpi bhārata || arbudānāṁ ca koṭībhirdaityānāṁ pāpakarmiṇām||
O Bharata, this goddess, though she has consumed billions upon billions of sinful demons, is satisfied by the mere prostration of her devotees.
Verse 74 (skanda.1.82.74)
kuṇḍaṁ cāsyā mayā devyāḥ puṇyaṁ niṣpāditaṁ śubham || yatra vai sparśamātreṇa sarvatīrthaphalaṁ labhet||
I have caused a sacred and auspicious tank to be made for this goddess, where merely by touching its waters one obtains the merit of every sacred tirtha.
Verse 75 (skanda.1.82.75)
harasiddhirdevasiddhirdharmasiddhiśca bhārata || vividhā prāpyate siddhistīrthe'smiṁścaṁḍikārataiḥ||
O Bharata, at this tirtha, those devoted to Chandika obtain manifold kinds of accomplishment — the power of Hara, the power of the gods, the power of dharma, and more.
Verse 76 (skanda.1.82.76)
yaśca pūjayate devīṁ svalpena bahunāpi vā || kātyāyanī koṭiśatairvṛtā tasya vibhūtidā||
Whoever worships this goddess, whether with little or with much, wins from Katyayani, surrounded by countless millions, the gift of prosperity.
Verse 77 (skanda.1.82.77)
evametā mahādurgā navatīrthe'tra saṁsthitāḥ || catasraścāpi digdevyo nityamarcyāḥ śubhepsubhiḥ||
Thus do these nine forms of Mahadurga stand established at this tirtha, together with the four directional goddesses — those who desire good fortune should worship all of them daily.
Verse 78 (skanda.1.82.78)
āśvinasya ca māsasya navarātre viśeṣataḥ || upoṣya caikabhaktairvā devīstvetāḥ prapūjayet||
Especially during the nine nights of the month of Ashvina, one should worship these goddesses while fasting or eating only a single meal a day.
Verse 79 (skanda.1.82.79)
balipūpakanaivedyaistarpaṇairdhūpagaṁdhibhiḥ || tasya rakṣāṁ caraṁtyetā rathyāsu trikacatvare||
With offerings, cakes, food, libations, incense, and fragrance — for one who thus worships, these goddesses protect him on the roads, at crossings, and in the marketplace.
Verse 80 (skanda.1.82.80)
bhūtapretapiśācādyā nopakuryuḥ prapīḍanam || āpado vidravaṁtyāśu yoginyo naṁdayaṁti tam||
Ghosts, spirits, demons, and the like do not torment him. Calamities flee swiftly away, and the yoginis fill him with joy.
Verse 81 (skanda.1.82.81)
putrārthī labhate putrāndhanārthī dhanamāpnuyāt || rogārto mucyate rogādbaddho mucyeta bandhanāt||
One desiring sons obtains sons, one desiring wealth obtains wealth, the sick is freed from disease, and the captive is freed from bondage.
Verse 82 (skanda.1.82.82)
āsāṁ yaḥ kurute bhaktiṁ naro nārī ca śraddhayā || sarvānkāmānavāpnoti yāṁściṁtayati cetasi||
Whatever man or woman devotedly worships these goddesses with faith obtains every desire that he cherishes in his mind.
Verse 83 (skanda.1.82.83)
kāmagavya imā devyaścintāmaṇinibhāstathā || kalpavallyo''tha bhaktānāṁ praticchando'tra nava hi||
These goddesses are like the wish-fulfilling cow, like the wish-granting jewel, and like the wish-fulfilling creeper for their devotees — here these nine goddesses are the very embodiment of that boon-granting power.
Verse 84 (skanda.1.82.84)
tathātra bhūtamātāsti harasiddhestu dakṣiṇe || tasyā māhātmyamatulaṁ saṁkṣepātprabravīmi te||
Here, to the south of Harasiddhi, dwells also Bhutamata, the mother of spirits. I shall now describe to you, in brief, her incomparable glory.
Verse 85 (skanda.1.82.85)
pūrvaṁ kila guho vidvānpuṇye sārasvate taṭe|| bhūtapretapiśācānāmādhirājye'bhyaṣicyata||
Long ago, the learned Guha was consecrated, on the sacred bank of the Sarasvati, as sovereign lord over the ghosts, spirits, and demons.
Verse 86 (skanda.1.82.86)
sa ca sarvāṇi bhūtāni maryādāyāmadhārayat || etadannaṁ pradāyaiva kṛpayā bhagavānguhaḥ||
He kept all the spirits within due bounds. Lord Guha, out of compassion, granted them this food —
Verse 87 (skanda.1.82.87)
yadamaṁtrahutaṁ kiṁcidvedabāhyaṁ ca yatkṛtam || aśraddhayā ca krodhena tadvastṛptyai bhaviṣyati||
— "Whatever is offered in a fire-oblation without mantras, whatever is performed contrary to Vedic rule, and whatever is done with disrespect or in anger — all of this shall serve for your nourishment."
Verse 88 (skanda.1.82.88)
tatastvanena bhogena tāni naṁdaṁti kṛtsnaśaḥ || tataḥ kenāpi kālena śraddhayā'śraddhayā kṛtam||
Through this allotted portion, all those spirits remained content. After this, at some point, offerings made with faith or without faith —
Verse 89 (skanda.1.82.89)
puṇyaṁ tānyeva bhūtāni grasaṁtyākramya devatāḥ || tato devāḥ kṣudhārttāste guhāyaitannyavedayan||
— whatever merit belonged rightly to the gods was seized and devoured by those very spirits. Then the gods, tormented by hunger, reported this matter to Guha.
Verse 90 (skanda.1.82.90)
sa vai tadākarṇya kruddho guhaḥ kāla ivābhavat || tasya kruddhasya bhrūpadmamadhyātkācidvinirgatā||
Hearing this, Guha grew wrathful and became like Time itself, the destroyer. From between his furrowed brows, in his anger, there emerged a certain being,
Verse 91 (skanda.1.82.91)
jvālāmālā sudurdarśā nārī dvādaśalocanā || sā ca praṇamya taṁ prāha tava śaktirahaṁ prabho || śīghramādiśa māṁ kṛtye kiṁ karomi tavepsitam||
— a woman garlanded with flames, terrible to behold, possessed of twelve eyes. She bowed to him and said: "O Lord, I am your very own power. Command me quickly — what shall I do? What is your desire?"
Verse 92 (skanda.1.82.92)
|| skanda uvāca || || etairbhūtagaṇaiḥ pāpairullaṁghya mama śāsanam||
Skanda said: "These sinful hosts of spirits have transgressed my own command."
Verse 93 (skanda.1.82.93)
manuṣyadattaṁ sakalaṁ bhujyate svecchayādhamaiḥ || śīghrametāni tvaṁ tasmānmaryādāyāmupānaya||
"These base beings consume, as they please, everything given by human beings. Therefore, quickly bring them back within due bounds."
Verse 94 (skanda.1.82.94)
etāstvānuvrajiṣyaṁti devyaḥ koṭiśataṁ śubhe || tatastatheti sā coktā devībhiḥ saṁvṛtā tadā||
"O gracious one, a hundred million goddesses shall accompany you." Then that goddess, saying "So be it," surrounded by many goddesses,
Verse 95 (skanda.1.82.95)
mayūraṁ samupāsthāya guhaśaktiḥ samāgatā || sarojavanamāsādya bhūtasaṁghānapaśyata||
— mounting a peacock, that power of Guha arrived, and reaching a grove of lotuses, she beheld the assembled hosts of spirits.
Verse 96 (skanda.1.82.96)
jaghāna ca samāsādya devī nānāvidhāyudhaiḥ || tataḥ pretapiśācādyā hanyamānā mahāraṇe||
Reaching them, the goddess began to strike them down with weapons of every kind. Then, being slain in that great battle, the ghosts, demons, and the like —
Verse 97 (skanda.1.82.97)
prasādayaṁti tāṁ devīṁ nānāveṣaiḥ sudīnavat || kecidbrāhmaṇaveṣaiśca tāpasānāṁ tatho ktibhiḥ||
— began, in manifold disguises, most piteously, to try to appease that goddess. Some, taking the guise of brahmins, speaking words like those of ascetics,
Verse 98 (skanda.1.82.98)
nṛtyaṁti devi padmākṣi prasīdeti punaḥpunaḥ || tataḥ prasannā sā devī vriyatāṁ svecchayā''ha tān||
— danced about, crying again and again, "O lotus-eyed Goddess, be gracious!" Then, becoming pleased, the goddess said to them: "Ask for a boon, whatever you wish."
Verse 99 (skanda.1.82.99)
tāṁ te procustrāhi nastvaṁ bhūtamātā bhaveśvari || maryādāṁ naiva tyakṣyāmo vayaṁ skandavinirmitām||
They said to her: "O sovereign consort of Bhava, protect us; become our very mother, mother of spirits. We shall never again transgress the bounds set by Skanda."
Verse 100 (skanda.1.82.100)
ye caivaṁ tvāṁ toṣayanti teṣāṁ dehi varānsadā||
"Whoever pleases you in this manner, grant them boons forever."
Verse 101 (skanda.1.82.101)
|| śrīdevyuvāca || || vaiśākhe darśadivase ye caivaṁ toṣayaṁti mām || ariṣṭābharaṇaiḥ puṣpairdadhibhaktaiśca pūjanaiḥ || teṣāṁ sarvopasargā vai yāsyaṁti vilayaṁ sphuṭam||
The Goddess said: "On the new-moon day of the month of Vaishakha, whoever pleases me thus, with ornaments of nimba leaves, flowers, and offerings of curd and rice, their every affliction shall assuredly be dissolved."
Verse 102 (skanda.1.82.102)
evaṁ dattvā varaṁ devī mumude bhūtasaṁvṛtā || evaṁprabhāvā sā devī mayānītātra bhārata||
Having thus granted the boon, the goddess, surrounded by the hosts of spirits, rejoiced. O Bharata, it was that very goddess, of such great power, whom I brought here.
Verse 103 (skanda.1.82.103)
ya enāṁ praṇamenmartyaḥ sarvāriṣṭairvimucyate||
Whatever mortal bows to her is freed from every affliction.
Verse 104 (skanda.1.82.104)
evaṁ prabhāvāḥ parikīrtitā mayā samāsatastīrthavare'tra devyaḥ || caturdaśaivārjuna pūjitā yāścaturdaśasthānavarairnṛmukhyaiḥ||
O Arjuna, thus have I briefly recounted the powers of these fourteen goddesses established at this supreme tirtha, worshipped by the foremost of men in their fourteen sacred stations.
