Verse 1 (skanda.1.86.1)

॥अतिथिरुवाच॥ यदेतत्परलोकस्य स्वरूपं व्याहृतं त्वया॥ आगमं समुपाश्रित्य तत्तथैव न संशयः

atithiruvāca yadetatparalokasya svarūpaṁ vyāhṛtaṁ tvayā āgamaṁ samupāśritya tattathaiva na saṁśayaḥ

The guest said: "This nature of the other world that you have declared, based on the scriptures, is indeed exactly so — there is no doubt of it."

Verse 2 (skanda.1.86.2)

किंत्वत्र नास्तिकाः पापाः सन्दिह्यन्तेऽल्पचेतनाः॥ तेषां निःसंशयकृते वद कर्मफलं हि यत्

kiṁtvatra nāstikāḥ pāpāḥ sandihyante'lpacetanāḥ teṣāṁ niḥsaṁśayakṛte vada karmaphalaṁ hi yat

"'But sinful unbelievers of feeble understanding remain in doubt about this; to remove their doubt entirely, tell me just what the fruit of each deed truly is.'"

Verse 3 (skanda.1.86.3)

इहैव कस्य कस्यैव कर्मणः पापकस्य च॥ प्रभावात्कीदृशो जायेत्कमठैतद्वदास्ति चेत्

ihaiva kasya kasyaiva karmaṇaḥ pāpakasya ca prabhāvātkīdṛśo jāyetkamaṭhaitadvadāsti cet

"'What comes about, even in this very life, from the power of each particular sinful deed? Tell me this, Kamatha, if indeed you know it.'"

Verse 4 (skanda.1.86.4)

॥कमठ उवाच॥ सर्वमेतत्प्रवक्ष्यामि स्थिरो भूत्वा शृणुष्व तत्॥ यथा मम गुरुः प्राह यन्मे चेतसि संस्थितम्

kamaṭha uvāca sarvametatpravakṣyāmi sthiro bhūtvā śṛṇuṣva tat yathā mama guruḥ prāha yanme cetasi saṁsthitam

Kamatha said: "I shall tell all of this; be composed and listen, just as my guru declared it to me and as it remains fixed in my mind."

Verse 5 (skanda.1.86.5)

ब्रह्महा क्षयरोगी स्यात्सुरापः श्यावदंतकः॥ सुवर्णचौरः कुनखी दुश्चर्मा गुरुतल्पगः

brahmahā kṣayarogī syātsurāpaḥ śyāvadaṁtakaḥ suvarṇacauraḥ kunakhī duścarmā gurutalpagaḥ

"One who slays a brahmin becomes afflicted with consumption; a drinker of liquor is born with blackened teeth; a thief of gold is born with deformed nails; one who violates his guru's bed is born with diseased skin."

Verse 6 (skanda.1.86.6)

संसर्गी सर्वरोगी स्यात्पंचपातकिनस्त्वमी॥ निंदामाकर्ण्य साधूनां बधिरः संप्रजायते

saṁsargī sarvarogī syātpaṁcapātakinastvamī niṁdāmākarṇya sādhūnāṁ badhiraḥ saṁprajāyate

"One who keeps company with these five great sinners becomes afflicted with every disease. One who listens to slander spoken against the virtuous is born deaf."

Verse 7 (skanda.1.86.7)

स्वयं प्रकीर्तयेच्चापि मूकः पापोऽभिजायते॥ आज्ञालोपी गुरूणां च अपस्मारी भवेन्नरः

svayaṁ prakīrtayeccāpi mūkaḥ pāpo'bhijāyate ājñālopī gurūṇāṁ ca apasmārī bhavennaraḥ

"And one who himself utters such slander is born mute because of that sin. One who disregards the commands of his elders becomes afflicted with epilepsy."

Verse 8 (skanda.1.86.8)

अवज्ञाकारकस्तेषां कृमिरेवाभिजायते॥ उपेक्षतः पूज्यकार्यं दुष्प्रज्ञत्वं च जायते

avajñākārakasteṣāṁ kṛmirevābhijāyate upekṣataḥ pūjyakāryaṁ duṣprajñatvaṁ ca jāyate

"One who shows contempt toward such persons is reborn as a mere worm. From neglecting one's duties toward those worthy of reverence, one is born with a corrupted intellect."

Verse 9 (skanda.1.86.9)

चौर्याय साधुद्रव्याणां दद्याद्यावत्पदानि च॥ तावद्वर्षाणि पंगुत्वं स प्राप्नोति नराधमः

cauryāya sādhudravyāṇāṁ dadyādyāvatpadāni ca tāvadvarṣāṇi paṁgutvaṁ sa prāpnoti narādhamaḥ

"For as many steps as a base man takes in going to steal the property of the virtuous, for that many years he attains lameness."

Verse 10 (skanda.1.86.10)

दत्त्वा हरति तद्भूयो जायते कृकलासकः॥ कुपितानप्रसाद्यैव पूज्यान्स्याच्छीर्षरोगवान्

dattvā harati tadbhūyo jāyate kṛkalāsakaḥ kupitānaprasādyaiva pūjyānsyācchīrṣarogavān

"One who gives a gift and then takes it back is reborn as a chameleon. One who fails to appease those worthy of honor once angered becomes afflicted with a disease of the head."

Verse 11 (skanda.1.86.11)

रजस्वलामभिगच्छंश्च चंडालः संप्रजायते॥ वस्त्रापहारी चित्री स्यात्कृष्णकुष्ठी तथाग्निदः

rajasvalāmabhigacchaṁśca caṁḍālaḥ saṁprajāyate vastrāpahārī citrī syātkṛṣṇakuṣṭhī tathāgnidaḥ

"One who approaches a woman during her monthly courses is born a chandala. A thief of clothing is born with a mottled skin-disease, and one who sets fire to another's property is born a black leper."

Verse 12 (skanda.1.86.12)

दर्दुरो रूप्यहारी स्यात्कूटसाक्षी मुखारुजः॥ परदारांश्च कामेन द्रष्टा स्यादक्षिरोगवान्

darduro rūpyahārī syātkūṭasākṣī mukhārujaḥ paradārāṁśca kāmena draṣṭā syādakṣirogavān

"A thief of silver is reborn a frog; a false witness is born with a diseased mouth; one who gazes with lust upon another's wife is born afflicted with a disease of the eyes."

Verse 13 (skanda.1.86.13)

प्रतिज्ञायाप्रयच्छन्यो ह्यल्पायुर्जायते नरः॥ विप्रवृत्त्यपहारी स्यादजीर्णी सर्वदाऽधमः

pratijñāyāprayacchanyo hyalpāyurjāyate naraḥ vipravṛttyapahārī syādajīrṇī sarvadā'dhamaḥ

"A man who, having promised, fails to give, is born short-lived; a wretched man who robs a brahmin of his livelihood suffers always from indigestion."

Verse 14 (skanda.1.86.14)

नैष्ठिकान्नाशनाद्भूयो निवृत्तो रोगवान्सदा॥ पत्नीबहुत्वे त्वेकस्यां रेतोमोक्षः क्षयी भवेत्

naiṣṭhikānnāśanādbhūyo nivṛtto rogavānsadā patnībahutve tvekasyāṁ retomokṣaḥ kṣayī bhavet

"One who, having broken his vow of lifelong celibacy, has fallen from it, remains diseased forever. One who, though having many wives, spends himself only upon one becomes consumptive."

Verse 15 (skanda.1.86.15)

स्वामिना धर्मयुक्तो यस्त्वन्यायेन समाचरेत्॥ स्वयं वा भक्षयेद्द्रव्यं स मूढः स्याज्जलोदरी

svāminā dharmayukto yastvanyāyena samācaret svayaṁ vā bhakṣayeddravyaṁ sa mūḍhaḥ syājjalodarī

"One who, though placed by his master in a position of trust, acts unjustly, or consumes for himself wealth entrusted to him, that fool becomes afflicted with dropsy."

Verse 16 (skanda.1.86.16)

दुर्बलं पीड्यमानं यो बलवान्समुपेक्षते॥ अंगहीनः स च भवेदन्नहृत्क्षुधितो भवेत्

durbalaṁ pīḍyamānaṁ yo balavānsamupekṣate aṁgahīnaḥ sa ca bhavedannahṛtkṣudhito bhavet

"A strong man who neglects the weak when they are being oppressed becomes deformed in his limbs; and a stealer of food remains ever hungry."

Verse 17 (skanda.1.86.17)

व्यवहारे पक्षपाती जिह्वारोगी भवेन्नरः॥ धर्मप्रवृत्तिं सञ्चार्य पत्न्यादीष्टवियोगकृत्

vyavahāre pakṣapātī jihvārogī bhavennaraḥ dharmapravṛttiṁ sañcārya patnyādīṣṭaviyogakṛt

"A man partial in his dealings and judgments becomes afflicted with a disease of the tongue. One who turns another away from the path of dharma brings about separation from his own beloved wife and kin."

Verse 18 (skanda.1.86.18)

स्वयं पाकाग्रभोजी यो गलरोगमवाप्नुयात्॥ पंचयज्ञानकृत्वैव भुञ्जानो ग्रामशूकरः

svayaṁ pākāgrabhojī yo galarogamavāpnuyāt paṁcayajñānakṛtvaiva bhuñjāno grāmaśūkaraḥ

"One who himself eats the first portion of the cooked food obtains a disease of the throat; one who eats without having performed the five great daily sacrifices is reborn a village pig."

Verse 19 (skanda.1.86.19)

पर्वमैथुन कृन्मेही परित्यज्य स्वगेहिनीम्॥ वेश्यादिरक्तो मूढात्मा खल्वाटो जायते नरः

parvamaithuna kṛnmehī parityajya svagehinīm veśyādirakto mūḍhātmā khalvāṭo jāyate naraḥ

"One who engages in intercourse on forbidden sacred days becomes afflicted with diabetes; a foolish man who, abandoning his own wife, becomes devoted to courtesans and the like is born bald."

Verse 20 (skanda.1.86.20)

परिक्षीणान्मित्रबन्धून्स्वामिनं दयितानुगान्॥ अवमन्य निवृत्तात्मा क्लिष्टवृत्तिः सदा भवेत्

parikṣīṇānmitrabandhūnsvāminaṁ dayitānugān avamanya nivṛttātmā kliṣṭavṛttiḥ sadā bhavet

"One who, turning away, dishonors his friends and kinsmen fallen into poverty, or his master, or his devoted followers, always leads a life of hardship."

Verse 21 (skanda.1.86.21)

छद्मनोपचरेद्यस्तु पितरौ स्वामिनं गुरून्॥ प्राप्तव्यार्थस्यातिकष्टात्परिभ्रंशोर्थजो भवेत्

chadmanopacaredyastu pitarau svāminaṁ gurūn prāptavyārthasyātikaṣṭātparibhraṁśorthajo bhavet

"One who serves his parents, his master, or his teachers with deceit is born to suffer great hardship and to be deprived of wealth that is rightfully his."

Verse 22 (skanda.1.86.22)

विश्रब्धस्यापहारी तु दुःखानां भाजनं भवेत्॥ धार्मिके क्षुद्रकारी यो नरः स वामनो भवेत्

viśrabdhasyāpahārī tu duḥkhānāṁ bhājanaṁ bhavet dhārmike kṣudrakārī yo naraḥ sa vāmano bhavet

"One who robs a person who has trusted him becomes a vessel of endless sorrows. A man who acts meanly toward the righteous is born a dwarf."

Verse 23 (skanda.1.86.23)

दुर्बलवृषवाही यः कटिलूती भवेत्स च

durbalavṛṣavāhī yaḥ kaṭilūtī bhavetsa ca

"One who overworks a weak bull becomes afflicted with a wasting disease of the hip."

Verse 24 (skanda.1.86.24)

जात्यंधश्चापि यो गोघ्नो निःपशुर्दुःखकृद्गवाम्॥ निर्दयो गोषु घाताद्यैः सदा सोध्वसु कष्टगः

jātyaṁdhaścāpi yo goghno niḥpaśurduḥkhakṛdgavām nirdayo goṣu ghātādyaiḥ sadā sodhvasu kaṣṭagaḥ

"A killer of cows is born blind from birth and without cattle of his own; one who is cruel to cows, causing them suffering through slaughter and the like, is forever in distress upon rough and difficult roads."

Verse 25 (skanda.1.86.25)

निस्तेजकः सभायां यो गलगण्डी स जायते॥ सदा क्रोधी च चंडालः पूतिवक्त्रश्च सूचकः

nistejakaḥ sabhāyāṁ yo galagaṇḍī sa jāyate sadā krodhī ca caṁḍālaḥ pūtivaktraśca sūcakaḥ

"One who humiliates someone in an assembly is born with a goiter. One who is habitually wrathful is born a chandala, and an informer, a slanderer, is born with a foul-smelling mouth."

Verse 26 (skanda.1.86.26)

अजविक्रयकृद्व्याधः कुण्डाशी भृतको भवेत्॥ नास्तिकस्तिल पिंडी स्यादश्रद्धो गीतजीवनः

ajavikrayakṛdvyādhaḥ kuṇḍāśī bhṛtako bhavet nāstikastila piṁḍī syādaśraddho gītajīvanaḥ

"A seller of goats [to be slaughtered] is born a hunter; one who eats improperly obtained food is born a hired servant; an unbeliever is born insignificant, like a mere ball of sesame; one lacking faith is born to live by singing for hire."

Verse 27 (skanda.1.86.27)

अभक्ष्यादो गण्डमाली स्त्रीखादी चाऽऽसुतस्य कृत्॥ अन्यायतो ज्ञानग्राही मूर्खो भवति मानवः

abhakṣyādo gaṇḍamālī strīkhādī cā''sutasya kṛt anyāyato jñānagrāhī mūrkho bhavati mānavaḥ

"One who eats forbidden food becomes afflicted with swollen glands; so too one who lives off a woman's earnings, and one who prepares intoxicating liquor; and one who acquires knowledge through unjust means becomes a foolish man."

Verse 28 (skanda.1.86.28)

शास्त्रचौरः केकराक्षः कथां पुण्यां च द्वेष्टि यः॥ कृमिवक्त्रः स च भवेद्विभ्रष्टो नरकात्कुधीः

śāstracauraḥ kekarākṣaḥ kathāṁ puṇyāṁ ca dveṣṭi yaḥ kṛmivaktraḥ sa ca bhavedvibhraṣṭo narakātkudhīḥ

"A thief of scriptural knowledge is born with squinting eyes; one who hates sacred and meritorious recitation is born with worms in his mouth — that man of corrupt intellect falls even below the reach of hell."

Verse 29 (skanda.1.86.29)

देवद्विजगवां वृत्तिहारको वांतभक्षकृत्॥ तडागारामभेत्ता यो भवेद्विकलपाणिकः

devadvijagavāṁ vṛttihārako vāṁtabhakṣakṛt taḍāgārāmabhettā yo bhavedvikalapāṇikaḥ

"One who deprives gods, brahmins, or cows of their sustenance is made, in time, to eat vomit; one who destroys tanks and gardens is born crippled in his hands."

Verse 30 (skanda.1.86.30)

व्यवहारे च्छलग्राही भृत्यग्रस्तो भवेन्नरः॥ सदा पुरुषरोगी स्यात्परदाररतो नरः

vyavahāre cchalagrāhī bhṛtyagrasto bhavennaraḥ sadā puruṣarogī syātparadārarato naraḥ

"A man who deceives others in his dealings becomes oppressed by his own servants; a man attached to another's wife is forever afflicted with disease of the male organ."

Verse 31 (skanda.1.86.31)

वात रोगी कुवैद्यः स्याद्दुश्चर्मा गुरुतल्पगः॥ मधुमेही खरीगामी गोत्रस्त्रीमैथुनोऽप्रसूः

vāta rogī kuvaidyaḥ syādduścarmā gurutalpagaḥ madhumehī kharīgāmī gotrastrīmaithuno'prasūḥ

"A poor physician becomes afflicted with rheumatism; one who violates his guru's bed is born with diseased skin; one who has union with a she-ass becomes diabetic; one who unites with a woman of his own lineage remains without offspring."

Verse 32 (skanda.1.86.32)

स्वसारं मातरं पुत्रवधूं गच्छन्नबीजवान्॥ कृतघ्नः सर्व कार्याणां वैफल्यं समुपाश्नुते

svasāraṁ mātaraṁ putravadhūṁ gacchannabījavān kṛtaghnaḥ sarva kāryāṇāṁ vaiphalyaṁ samupāśnute

"One who approaches his own sister, mother, or daughter-in-law becomes impotent; an ungrateful man meets with failure in every undertaking of his life."

Verse 33 (skanda.1.86.33)

इत्येष लक्षणोद्देशः पापिनां परिकीर्तितः॥ चित्रगुप्तोऽपि मुह्येत सकलस्यानुवर्णने

ityeṣa lakṣaṇoddeśaḥ pāpināṁ parikīrtitaḥ citragupto'pi muhyeta sakalasyānuvarṇane

"Thus has this outline of the marks of sinners been declared; even Chitragupta himself would be bewildered in describing them all in full."

Verse 34 (skanda.1.86.34)

एते नरक विभ्रष्टा भुक्त्वा योनीः सहस्रशः॥ एवंविधैश्चिह्निताश्च जायंते लक्षणैर्नराः

ete naraka vibhraṣṭā bhuktvā yonīḥ sahasraśaḥ evaṁvidhaiścihnitāśca jāyaṁte lakṣaṇairnarāḥ

"Such sinners, having fallen from hell and passed through thousands of lower wombs, are at last born as men marked with these very characteristics."

Verse 35 (skanda.1.86.35)

ये हि धर्मं न मन्यंते तथा ये व्यसनैर्जिताः॥ अनुमानेन बोद्धव्यं यदेते शेषपापिनः

ye hi dharmaṁ na manyaṁte tathā ye vyasanairjitāḥ anumānena boddhavyaṁ yadete śeṣapāpinaḥ

"Those who hold dharma in no regard, and those overcome by their vices — it should be understood by inference that these too are numbered among the remaining sinners."

Verse 36 (skanda.1.86.36)

येषां त्वंतगतं पापं स्वर्गाद्वा ये समागताः॥ सर्वव्यसननिर्मुक्ता धर्ममेकं भजन्ति ते

yeṣāṁ tvaṁtagataṁ pāpaṁ svargādvā ye samāgatāḥ sarvavyasananirmuktā dharmamekaṁ bhajanti te

"But those whose sin has come to its end, or who have descended from heaven, being free of every vice, devote themselves to dharma alone."

Verse 37 (skanda.1.86.37)

भवंति चात्र श्लोकाः॥ धर्मादनवमं सौख्यमधर्माद्दुःखसम्भवः॥ तस्माद्धर्मं सुखार्थाय कुर्यात्पापं विवर्जयेत्

bhavaṁti cātra ślokāḥ dharmādanavamaṁ saukhyamadharmādduḥkhasambhavaḥ tasmāddharmaṁ sukhārthāya kuryātpāpaṁ vivarjayet

"Here there are verses on this: from dharma comes happiness unsurpassed, from adharma arises misery; therefore, for the sake of happiness, one should practice dharma and forsake sin."

Verse 38 (skanda.1.86.38)

लोकद्वयेऽपि यत्सौख्यं तद्धर्मात्प्रोच्यते यतः॥ धर्ममेकमतः कुर्यात्सर्वकार्यार्थसिद्धये

lokadvaye'pi yatsaukhyaṁ taddharmātprocyate yataḥ dharmamekamataḥ kuryātsarvakāryārthasiddhaye

"Since whatever happiness exists in either world is said to arise from dharma alone, one should therefore practice dharma alone, so that every purpose may be accomplished."

Verse 39 (skanda.1.86.39)

मुहूर्तमपि जीवेत नरः शुक्लेन कर्मणा॥ न कल्पमपि जीवेत लोकद्वयविरोधिना

muhūrtamapi jīveta naraḥ śuklena karmaṇā na kalpamapi jīveta lokadvayavirodhinā

"A man should rather live but a single muhurta through righteous action than live even an aeon through conduct opposed to the good of both worlds."

Verse 40 (skanda.1.86.40)

इति पृष्टं त्वया विप्र यथाशक्त्या मयेरितम्॥ असूक्तं सूक्तमथवा क्षंतव्यं किं वदामि च

iti pṛṣṭaṁ tvayā vipra yathāśaktyā mayeritam asūktaṁ sūktamathavā kṣaṁtavyaṁ kiṁ vadāmi ca

"Thus, O brahmin, have I answered what you asked, to the best of my ability; whether it was ill-spoken or well-spoken, may it be forgiven — what more shall I say?"

Verse 41 (skanda.1.86.41)

॥नारद उवाच॥ कमठस्यैतदाकर्ण्य अष्टवर्षस्य भाषितम्॥ भगवान्भास्करः प्रीतो बभूवातीव विस्मितः

nārada uvāca kamaṭhasyaitadākarṇya aṣṭavarṣasya bhāṣitam bhagavānbhāskaraḥ prīto babhūvātīva vismitaḥ

Narada said: "Hearing this speech from eight-year-old Kamatha, the lord Bhaskara became greatly pleased and utterly astonished."

Verse 42 (skanda.1.86.42)

प्रशशंस च तान्विप्रान्हारीतप्रमुखांस्तदा॥ अहो वसुमती धन्या द्विजैरेवंविधोत्तमैः

praśaśaṁsa ca tānviprānhārītapramukhāṁstadā aho vasumatī dhanyā dvijairevaṁvidhottamaiḥ

"And he praised those brahmins headed by Harita: 'Ah, blessed indeed is this earth, to be graced by such excellent twice-born as these!'"

Verse 43 (skanda.1.86.43)

अथ प्रजापतिर्धन्यो यन्मर्यादाभिपाल्यते॥ अमीभिर्ब्राह्मणवरैर्धन्या वेदाश्च संप्रति

atha prajāpatirdhanyo yanmaryādābhipālyate amībhirbrāhmaṇavarairdhanyā vedāśca saṁprati

"'And blessed indeed is Prajapati, whose ordinances are thus so faithfully upheld; and blessed too are the Vedas, now safeguarded by these excellent brahmins.'"

Verse 44 (skanda.1.86.44)

येषां मध्ये बालबुद्धिरियमेतादृशी स्फुटा॥ हारीतप्रमुखानां हि का वै बुद्धिर्भविष्यति

yeṣāṁ madhye bālabuddhiriyametādṛśī sphuṭā hārītapramukhānāṁ hi kā vai buddhirbhaviṣyati

"'Among whom even the intelligence of a mere child shines forth so clearly — what indeed must be the wisdom of Harita and the others themselves!'"

Verse 45 (skanda.1.86.45)

असंशयं त्रिलोकस्थमेषामविदितं न हि॥ यथैतान्नारदः प्राह भूयस्तस्मादमी बहु

asaṁśayaṁ trilokasthameṣāmaviditaṁ na hi yathaitānnāradaḥ prāha bhūyastasmādamī bahu

"'Without doubt, nothing existing anywhere in the three worlds is unknown to them; just as Narada has spoken of them, so indeed they are far greater still.'"

Verse 46 (skanda.1.86.46)

इति प्रशस्य तान्विप्रान्प्रहृष्टो रविरव्रवीत्॥ अहं सूर्यो विप्रमुख्या युष्माकं दर्शनात्कृते

iti praśasya tānviprānprahṛṣṭo raviravravīt ahaṁ sūryo vipramukhyā yuṣmākaṁ darśanātkṛte

Having praised those brahmins thus, Ravi, greatly delighted, said: "I am Surya, O foremost of brahmins; for the sake of beholding you—"

Verse 47 (skanda.1.86.47)

समागतः सूर्यलोकात्प्राप्तं नेत्रफलं च मे॥ भवद्विधैर्विप्रमुख्यैः संजल्पनसहासनात्

samāgataḥ sūryalokātprāptaṁ netraphalaṁ ca me bhavadvidhairvipramukhyaiḥ saṁjalpanasahāsanāt

"'—I have come here from the world of the Sun; and by conversing and sitting together with brahmins such as you, the very purpose of my eyes has now been fulfilled.'"

Verse 48 (skanda.1.86.48)

अंत्यजा अपि पूयन्ते किं पुनर्मादृशा द्विजाः॥ सर्वथा नारदो धन्यो योऽसौ त्रैलोक्यतत्त्ववित्

aṁtyajā api pūyante kiṁ punarmādṛśā dvijāḥ sarvathā nārado dhanyo yo'sau trailokyatattvavit

"'Even the lowborn are purified by such company — how much more so a brahmin like myself! Blessed in every way is Narada, the very knower of the truth of the three worlds.'"

Verse 49 (skanda.1.86.49)

युष्माभिर्बध्यते श्रेयो यस्य वै धूतकिल्विषैः॥ प्रणमामि च वः सर्वान्मनोबुद्धिसमाधिभिः॥ तपो विद्या च वृत्तं च यतो वार्द्धक्यकारणम्

yuṣmābhirbadhyate śreyo yasya vai dhūtakilviṣaiḥ praṇamāmi ca vaḥ sarvānmanobuddhisamādhibhiḥ tapo vidyā ca vṛttaṁ ca yato vārddhakyakāraṇam

"'For one whose sin has been shaken off, it is through such as you that true welfare is secured. I bow to all of you with mind, intellect, and deep composure; for austerity, learning, and conduct are the true grounds of seniority and honor.'"

Verse 50 (skanda.1.86.50)

वरं मत्तो वृणीध्वं च दुर्लभं यं हृदीच्छत॥ यूयं स्वयं हि वरदा मत्संगो मास्तु निष्फलः

varaṁ matto vṛṇīdhvaṁ ca durlabhaṁ yaṁ hṛdīcchata yūyaṁ svayaṁ hi varadā matsaṁgo māstu niṣphalaḥ

"'Ask a boon of me, whatever rare thing your heart may desire; for you yourselves are truly the granters of boons — let not this meeting with me pass without fruit.'"

Verse 51 (skanda.1.86.51)

देवतानां हि संसर्गो निष्फलो नोपजायते॥ तस्मान्मत्तो वरं किंचिद्वृणुध्वं प्रददामि वः

devatānāṁ hi saṁsargo niṣphalo nopajāyate tasmānmatto varaṁ kiṁcidvṛṇudhvaṁ pradadāmi vaḥ

"'For contact with the gods never proves fruitless; therefore ask of me some boon, and I shall grant it to you.'"

Verse 52 (skanda.1.86.52)

॥श्रीनारद उवाच॥ इति सूर्यवचः श्रुत्वा प्रहृष्टास्ते द्विजोत्तमाः

śrīnārada uvāca iti sūryavacaḥ śrutvā prahṛṣṭāste dvijottamāḥ

Sri Narada said: "Hearing these words of Surya, those excellent brahmins were filled with great delight."

Verse 53 (skanda.1.86.53)

संपूज्य परया भक्त्या पाद्यार्घ्यस्तुतिवंदनैः॥ मंडलादीन्महाजप्यान्गृणंतः प्रोचिरे रविम्

saṁpūjya parayā bhaktyā pādyārghyastutivaṁdanaiḥ maṁḍalādīnmahājapyāngṛṇaṁtaḥ procire ravim

"Worshipping him with supreme devotion — with water for the feet, offerings, hymns of praise, and salutations — and reciting the great mantras beginning with the Mandala hymn, they addressed Ravi:"

Verse 54 (skanda.1.86.54)

जयादित्य जय स्वामिञ्जय भानो जयामल॥ जय वेदपते शश्वत्तारयास्मानहर्पते

jayāditya jaya svāmiñjaya bhāno jayāmala jaya vedapate śaśvattārayāsmānaharpate

"'Victory to you, Jayaditya! Victory, O Lord! Victory, O Bhanu! Victory, O stainless one! Victory, O Lord of the Vedas! Ever protect us, O Lord of the day!'"

Verse 55 (skanda.1.86.55)

विप्राणां त्वं परो देवो विप्रसर्गोऽपि त्वन्मयः॥ नितरां पूतमेतन्नः स्थानं देव त्वयेक्षितम्

viprāṇāṁ tvaṁ paro devo viprasargo'pi tvanmayaḥ nitarāṁ pūtametannaḥ sthānaṁ deva tvayekṣitam

"'You are the supreme deity of brahmins; the entire race of brahmins is itself made of you. This our sacred place, O god, has become utterly purified, now that it has been beheld by you.'"

Verse 56 (skanda.1.86.56)

अद्य नः सफला वेदा अद्य नः सफलाः क्रियाः॥ अद्य नः सफलं गेहं त्वया संगम्य गोपते

adya naḥ saphalā vedā adya naḥ saphalāḥ kriyāḥ adya naḥ saphalaṁ gehaṁ tvayā saṁgamya gopate

"'Today our Vedas have borne fruit, today our sacred rites have borne fruit, today our home has borne fruit, O Lord of the rays, now that we have met with you.'"

Verse 57 (skanda.1.86.57)

वरं यदि प्रदातासि तदेनं प्रवृणीमहे॥ आस्माकीनमिदं स्थानं न हि त्याज्यं कथंचन

varaṁ yadi pradātāsi tadenaṁ pravṛṇīmahe āsmākīnamidaṁ sthānaṁ na hi tyājyaṁ kathaṁcana

"'If you are indeed willing to grant us a boon, then this is what we choose: that this our place should never, under any circumstance, be forsaken by you.'"

Verse 58 (skanda.1.86.58)

॥श्रीसूर्य उवाच॥ यस्माद्भवद्भिः पूर्वं हि जयादित्येति चोदितम्॥ जयादित्य इति ख्यातस्तस्मात्स्थास्येऽत्र सर्वदा

śrīsūrya uvāca yasmādbhavadbhiḥ pūrvaṁ hi jayādityeti coditam jayāditya iti khyātastasmātsthāsye'tra sarvadā

Sri Surya said: "Since you have first addressed me here as 'Jayaditya,' I shall, known henceforth by that very name, dwell here forever."

Verse 59 (skanda.1.86.59)

यावन्मही समुद्राश्च पर्वता नगराणि च॥ तावत्स्थानमिदं विप्रा न हि त्यक्ष्यामि कर्हिचित्

yāvanmahī samudrāśca parvatā nagarāṇi ca tāvatsthānamidaṁ viprā na hi tyakṣyāmi karhicit

"As long as the earth, the oceans, the mountains, and the cities endure, O brahmins, for so long shall I never abandon this place."

Verse 60 (skanda.1.86.60)

दारिद्र्यरोगसंघातान्दद्रवो मंडलानि च॥ कुष्ठादीन्नाशयिष्यामि भजतामत्र संस्थितः

dāridryarogasaṁghātāndadravo maṁḍalāni ca kuṣṭhādīnnāśayiṣyāmi bhajatāmatra saṁsthitaḥ

"Abiding here, I shall destroy poverty, the whole host of diseases, ringworm, and leprosy and its kindred ills, for all who worship me at this place."

Verse 61 (skanda.1.86.61)

यो मामत्र स्थितं चापि पूजयिष्यति मानवः॥ सूर्यलोकमिवागम्य पूजां तस्य भजाम्यहम्

yo māmatra sthitaṁ cāpi pūjayiṣyati mānavaḥ sūryalokamivāgamya pūjāṁ tasya bhajāmyaham

"Whatever man worships me here as I abide in this place, upon him I bestow the same regard as if he had gone in person to the very realm of the Sun."

Verse 62 (skanda.1.86.62)

॥श्रीनारद उवाच॥ एवमुक्ते भगवता हारीताद्या द्विजोत्तमाः॥ मूर्तिं संस्थापयामासुर्वेदोदितविधानतः

śrīnārada uvāca evamukte bhagavatā hārītādyā dvijottamāḥ mūrtiṁ saṁsthāpayāmāsurvedoditavidhānataḥ

Sri Narada said: "When the lord had spoken thus, Harita and the other excellent brahmins established an image of him according to the rites enjoined by the Veda."

Verse 63 (skanda.1.86.63)

ततो द्विजाः प्राहुरेवं कमठं त्वत्कृते रविः॥ अत्र स्वामी स्थितस्तस्मात्प्रथमं स्तुहि त्वं रविम्

tato dvijāḥ prāhurevaṁ kamaṭhaṁ tvatkṛte raviḥ atra svāmī sthitastasmātprathamaṁ stuhi tvaṁ ravim

"Then the brahmins said this to Kamatha: 'It is for your sake that Ravi has taken his place here as our Lord; therefore, you must be the first to offer him praise.'"

Verse 64 (skanda.1.86.64)

इत्युक्तो ब्राह्मणैः सर्वैः कमठो वाग्ग्मिनां वरः॥ प्रणिपत्य जयादित्यं महास्तोत्रमिदं जगौ

ityukto brāhmaṇaiḥ sarvaiḥ kamaṭho vāggmināṁ varaḥ praṇipatya jayādityaṁ mahāstotramidaṁ jagau

"Thus addressed by all the brahmins, Kamatha, foremost among the eloquent, bowed low before Jayaditya and sang this great hymn:"

Verse 65 (skanda.1.86.65)

न त्वं कृतः केवलसंश्रुतश्च यजुष्येवं व्याहरत्यादिदेव॥ चतुर्विधा भारती दूरदूरं धृष्टः स्तौमि स्वार्थकामः क्षमैतत्

na tvaṁ kṛtaḥ kevalasaṁśrutaśca yajuṣyevaṁ vyāharatyādideva caturvidhā bhāratī dūradūraṁ dhṛṣṭaḥ staumi svārthakāmaḥ kṣamaitat

"'You are uncreated, known only through what is heard in the scriptures; so the Yajus itself declares of you, O primal god. My fourfold speech falls far, far short of your true greatness; out of selfish desire I boldly presume to praise you — forgive me this.'"

Verse 66 (skanda.1.86.66)

मार्तंडसूर्यांशुरविस्तथेन्द्रो भानुर्भगश्चार्यमा स्वर्णरेताः

mārtaṁḍasūryāṁśuravistathendro bhānurbhagaścāryamā svarṇaretāḥ

"Martanda, Surya, Amshu, Ravi, and Indra, Bhanu, Bhaga, Aryama, Svarnaretas—"

Verse 67 (skanda.1.86.67)

दिवाकरो मित्रविष्णुश्च देव ख्यातस्त्वं वै द्वादशात्मा नमस्ते॥ लोकत्रयं वै तव गर्भगेहं जलाधारः प्रोच्यसे खं समग्रम्

divākaro mitraviṣṇuśca deva khyātastvaṁ vai dvādaśātmā namaste lokatrayaṁ vai tava garbhagehaṁ jalādhāraḥ procyase khaṁ samagram

"—Divakara, Mitra, and Vishnu — O god, you are renowned as these twelve forms; salutation to you! The three worlds are truly your inner sanctum; you are declared the holder of the waters, and the whole of space is you."

Verse 68 (skanda.1.86.68)

नक्षत्रमाला कुसुमाभिमाला तस्मै नमो व्योमलिंगाय तुभ्यम्

nakṣatramālā kusumābhimālā tasmai namo vyomaliṁgāya tubhyam

"The garland of stars is your very garland of flowers; salutation to you, whose form is the sky itself."

Verse 69 (skanda.1.86.69)

त्वं देवदेवस्त्वमनाथनाथस्त्वं प्राप्यपालः कृपणे कृपालुः॥ त्वं नेत्रनेत्रं जनबुद्धिबुद्धिराकाशकाशो जय जीवजीवः

tvaṁ devadevastvamanāthanāthastvaṁ prāpyapālaḥ kṛpaṇe kṛpāluḥ tvaṁ netranetraṁ janabuddhibuddhirākāśakāśo jaya jīvajīvaḥ

"You are the god of gods, the protector of the protectorless, the guardian of that which must be attained, compassionate to the wretched. You are the eye of the eye, the intellect within the intellect of all beings, the very light of the sky — victory to you, the life within all life!"

Verse 70 (skanda.1.86.70)

दारिद्र्यदारिद्र्य निधे निधीनाममंगलामंगल शर्मशर्म॥ रोगप्ररोगः प्रथितः पृथिव्यां चिरं जयादित्य जयाप्रमेय

dāridryadāridrya nidhe nidhīnāmamaṁgalāmaṁgala śarmaśarma rogaprarogaḥ prathitaḥ pṛthivyāṁ ciraṁ jayāditya jayāprameya

"O you who are poverty to poverty itself, the treasure of treasures, misfortune to misfortune itself, joy of joys, disease to disease itself, renowned throughout the earth — long may you live, Jayaditya! Victory to you, immeasurable one!"

Verse 71 (skanda.1.86.71)

व्याधिग्रस्तं कुष्ठरोगाभिभूतं भग्न प्राणं शीर्णदेहं विसंज्ञम्॥ माता पिता बांधवाः संत्यजंति सर्वैस्त्यक्तं पासि कोस्ति त्वदन्यः

vyādhigrastaṁ kuṣṭharogābhibhūtaṁ bhagna prāṇaṁ śīrṇadehaṁ visaṁjñam mātā pitā bāṁdhavāḥ saṁtyajaṁti sarvaistyaktaṁ pāsi kosti tvadanyaḥ

"One seized by disease, overwhelmed by leprosy, his breath failing, his body wasted, senseless — even his mother, father, and kinsmen abandon him. You alone protect the one forsaken by all; who else is there besides you?"

Verse 72 (skanda.1.86.72)

त्वं मे पिता त्वं जननी त्वमेव त्वं मे गुरुर्बान्धवाश्च त्वमेव॥ त्वं मे धर्मस्त्वं च मे मोक्षमार्गो दासस्तुभ्यं त्यज वा रक्ष देव

tvaṁ me pitā tvaṁ jananī tvameva tvaṁ me gururbāndhavāśca tvameva tvaṁ me dharmastvaṁ ca me mokṣamārgo dāsastubhyaṁ tyaja vā rakṣa deva

"You are my father, you alone are my mother, you alone are my teacher, and you alone are my kinsmen. You are my dharma, and you are my path to liberation; I am your servant — whether you forsake me or protect me, O god, I am yours."

Verse 73 (skanda.1.86.73)

पापोऽस्मि मूढोऽस्मि महोग्रकर्मा रौद्रोऽस्मि नाचारनिधानमस्मि॥ तथापि तुभ्यं प्रणिपत्य पादयोर्जयं भक्तानामर्पय श्रीजयार्क

pāpo'smi mūḍho'smi mahograkarmā raudro'smi nācāranidhānamasmi tathāpi tubhyaṁ praṇipatya pādayorjayaṁ bhaktānāmarpaya śrījayārka

"I am sinful, I am foolish, my deeds are terribly fierce, I am cruel, I am no storehouse of virtue; yet still, bowing low at your two feet, I pray: grant victory to your devotees, O glorious Jayarka."

Verse 74 (skanda.1.86.74)

॥नारद उवाच॥ एवं स्तुतो जयादित्यः कमठेन महात्मना॥ स्निग्धगंभीरया वाचा प्राह तं प्रहसन्निव

nārada uvāca evaṁ stuto jayādityaḥ kamaṭhena mahātmanā snigdhagaṁbhīrayā vācā prāha taṁ prahasanniva

Narada said: "Thus praised by the great-souled Kamatha, Jayaditya, as if smiling, spoke to him in a voice both tender and deep:"

Verse 75 (skanda.1.86.75)

जयादित्याष्टकमिदं यत्त्वया परिकीर्तितम्॥ अनेन स्तोष्यते यो मां भुवि तस्य न दुर्लभम्

jayādityāṣṭakamidaṁ yattvayā parikīrtitam anena stoṣyate yo māṁ bhuvi tasya na durlabham

"'This octet in praise of Jayaditya, which you have now recited — by it, whoever on earth shall praise me, for him nothing shall remain unattainable.'"

Verse 76 (skanda.1.86.76)

रविवारे विशेषेण मां समभ्यर्च्य यः पठेत्॥ तस्य रोगा न शिष्यंति दारिद्र्यं च न संशयः

ravivāre viśeṣeṇa māṁ samabhyarcya yaḥ paṭhet tasya rogā na śiṣyaṁti dāridryaṁ ca na saṁśayaḥ

"'Whoever recites this, especially on a Sunday, after duly worshipping me, for him no disease will remain, nor poverty — of this there is no doubt.'"

Verse 77 (skanda.1.86.77)

त्वया च तोषितो वत्स तव दद्मि वरंत्वमुम्॥ सर्वज्ञो भुवि भूत्वा त्वं ततो मुक्तिमवाप्स्यसि

tvayā ca toṣito vatsa tava dadmi varaṁtvamum sarvajño bhuvi bhūtvā tvaṁ tato muktimavāpsyasi

"'And, my child, being pleased with you, I grant you this boon: having become all-knowing here on earth, you shall thereafter attain liberation.'"

Verse 78 (skanda.1.86.78)

त्वत्पिता स्मृतिकारश्च भविष्यति द्विजार्चितः॥ स्थानस्यास्य न नाशश्च कदाचित्प्रभविष्यति

tvatpitā smṛtikāraśca bhaviṣyati dvijārcitaḥ sthānasyāsya na nāśaśca kadācitprabhaviṣyati

"'Your father too shall become the author of a Smriti and be honored by the twice-born; and never shall this place come to ruin.'"

Verse 79 (skanda.1.86.79)

न चैतत्स्थानकं वत्स परित्यक्ष्यामि कर्हिचित्॥ एवमुक्ता स भगवान्ब्राह्मणैरर्चितः स्तुतः

na caitatsthānakaṁ vatsa parityakṣyāmi karhicit evamuktā sa bhagavānbrāhmaṇairarcitaḥ stutaḥ

"'And, my child, I shall never forsake this place.' Having spoken thus, that lord, honored and praised by the brahmins,"

Verse 80 (skanda.1.86.80)

अनुज्ञाप्य द्विजेद्रांस्तांस्तत्रैवांतर्दधे प्रभुः॥ एवं पार्थ समुत्पन्नो जयादित्योऽत्र भूतले

anujñāpya dvijedrāṁstāṁstatraivāṁtardadhe prabhuḥ evaṁ pārtha samutpanno jayādityo'tra bhūtale

"—taking leave of those foremost brahmins, the lord vanished then and there. Thus, O Partha, did Jayaditya come to manifest upon this earth."

Verse 81 (skanda.1.86.81)

आश्विने मासि संप्राप्ते रविवारे च सुव्रत॥ आश्विने भानुवारेण यो जयादित्यमर्चयेत्

āśvine māsi saṁprāpte ravivāre ca suvrata āśvine bhānuvāreṇa yo jayādityamarcayet

"O man of good vows, when the month of Ashvina arrives, on a Sunday — whoever, in the month of Ashvina, worships Jayaditya on a Sunday,"

Verse 82 (skanda.1.86.82)

कोटितीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा ब्रह्महत्यां व्यपोहति॥ पूजनाद्रक्तमाल्यैश्च रक्तचंदनकुंकुमैः

koṭitīrthe naraḥ snātvā brahmahatyāṁ vyapohati pūjanādraktamālyaiśca raktacaṁdanakuṁkumaiḥ

"—having bathed in Koti-tirtha, that man washes away even the sin of killing a brahmin. By worshipping with red garlands, red sandalwood, and vermilion,"

Verse 83 (skanda.1.86.83)

लेपनाद्गंधधूपाद्यै नैवेद्येर्घृतपायसैः॥ ब्रह्मघ्नश्च सुरापश्च स्तेयी च गुरुतल्पगः

lepanādgaṁdhadhūpādyai naivedyerghṛtapāyasaiḥ brahmaghnaśca surāpaśca steyī ca gurutalpagaḥ

"—by anointing him with fragrant paste and incense, and with offerings of ghee and rice-pudding — even a killer of a brahmin, a drinker of liquor, a thief, or one who has defiled his guru's bed,"

Verse 84 (skanda.1.86.84)

मुच्यते सर्वपापेभ्यः सूर्यलोकं च गच्छति॥ पुत्रदारधनान्यायुः प्राप्य सां सारिकं सुखम्

mucyate sarvapāpebhyaḥ sūryalokaṁ ca gacchati putradāradhanānyāyuḥ prāpya sāṁ sārikaṁ sukham

"—is freed from every sin and goes to the world of the Sun; having obtained sons, wife, wealth, long life, and worldly happiness,"

Verse 85 (skanda.1.86.85)

इष्टकामैः समायुक्तः सूर्यलोके चिरं वसेत्

iṣṭakāmaiḥ samāyuktaḥ sūryaloke ciraṁ vaset

"—endowed with every desired wish, he dwells for a long time in the world of the Sun."

Verse 86 (skanda.1.86.86)

सर्वेषु रविवारेषु जयादित्यस्य दर्शनम्॥ कीर्तनं स्मरणं वापि सर्व रोगोपशांतिदम्

sarveṣu ravivāreṣu jayādityasya darśanam kīrtanaṁ smaraṇaṁ vāpi sarva rogopaśāṁtidam

"On every Sunday, the sight of Jayaditya, his recitation, or even mere remembrance of him brings about the cessation of every disease."

Verse 87 (skanda.1.86.87)

अनादिनिधनं देवमव्यक्तं तेजसां निधिम्॥ ये भक्तास्ते च लीयंते सौरस्थाने निरामये

anādinidhanaṁ devamavyaktaṁ tejasāṁ nidhim ye bhaktāste ca līyaṁte saurasthāne nirāmaye

"The devotees of that god without beginning or end, unmanifest, the very treasury of all splendors, become merged into the realm of the Sun, forever free of affliction."

Verse 88 (skanda.1.86.88)

सूर्योपरागे संप्राप्ते रविकूपे समाहितः॥ स्नानं यः कुरुते पार्थ होमं कुर्यात्प्रयत्नतः

sūryoparāge saṁprāpte ravikūpe samāhitaḥ snānaṁ yaḥ kurute pārtha homaṁ kuryātprayatnataḥ

"When a solar eclipse occurs, O Partha, whoever, with a composed mind, bathes in the well of Ravi and diligently performs the fire-offering,"

Verse 89 (skanda.1.86.89)

दानं चैव यथाशक्त्या जयादित्याग्रतः स्थितः॥ तस्य पुण्यस्य माहात्म्यं शृणुष्वैकमना जय

dānaṁ caiva yathāśaktyā jayādityāgrataḥ sthitaḥ tasya puṇyasya māhātmyaṁ śṛṇuṣvaikamanā jaya

"—and gives gifts according to his ability, standing before Jayaditya — hear now, O Jaya, with a single-pointed mind, the greatness of the merit he gains."

Verse 90 (skanda.1.86.90)

कुरुक्षेत्रेषु यत्पुण्यं प्रभासे पुष्करेषु च॥ वाराणस्यां च यत्पुण्यं प्रयागे नैमिषेऽपि वा॥ तत्पुण्यं लभते मर्त्यो जयादित्यप्रसादतः

kurukṣetreṣu yatpuṇyaṁ prabhāse puṣkareṣu ca vārāṇasyāṁ ca yatpuṇyaṁ prayāge naimiṣe'pi vā tatpuṇyaṁ labhate martyo jayādityaprasādataḥ

"Whatever merit exists at Kurukshetra, at Prabhasa, and at Pushkara, and whatever merit exists at Varanasi, at Prayaga, and even at Naimisha — all that same merit a mortal obtains through the grace of Jayaditya."
