The Glory of Narada

Verse 1 (skanda.1.89.1)

॥नारद उवाच॥ ममापि पार्थ तत्रास्ति मूर्तिर्ब्राह्मणकाम्यया॥ तत्र नाहं त्यजाम्यंग च्छत्रदण्डविभूषिताम्

nārada uvāca mamāpi pārtha tatrāsti mūrtirbrāhmaṇakāmyayā tatra nāhaṁ tyajāmyaṁga cchatradaṇḍavibhūṣitām

Narada said: "My own image too, O Partha, stands there, at the wish of the brahmins; that place, adorned with umbrella and staff, I never abandon."

Verse 2 (skanda.1.89.2)

कार्तिकस्य तु या शुक्ला भवत्येकादशी शुभा॥ तस्यां मदर्चनं कृत्वा कलिदोषैर्विमुच्यते

kārtikasya tu yā śuklā bhavatyekādaśī śubhā tasyāṁ madarcanaṁ kṛtvā kalidoṣairvimucyate

"On the auspicious eleventh day of the bright fortnight of Kartika, whoever worships me on that day is freed from the taints of Kali."

Verse 3 (skanda.1.89.3)

॥अर्जुन उवाच॥ बाल्यात्प्रभृति संदेहो ममायं हृदि वर्तते॥ पृच्छतस्तं च मे विप्र न क्रोधं कर्तुमर्हसि

arjuna uvāca bālyātprabhṛti saṁdeho mamāyaṁ hṛdi vartate pṛcchatastaṁ ca me vipra na krodhaṁ kartumarhasi

Arjuna said: "This doubt of mine has dwelt in my heart since childhood; and as I now ask it, O brahmin, you should not be angered by it."

Verse 4 (skanda.1.89.4)

सदा त्वं मोक्षधर्मेषु परिनिष्ठां परां गतः॥ सर्वभूतसमो दांतो रागद्वेषविवर्जितः

sadā tvaṁ mokṣadharmeṣu pariniṣṭhāṁ parāṁ gataḥ sarvabhūtasamo dāṁto rāgadveṣavivarjitaḥ

"You are ever established in the deepest devotion to the disciplines of liberation; equal toward all beings, self-controlled, and free of attachment and aversion."

Verse 5 (skanda.1.89.5)

त्यक्तनिंदास्तुतिर्मौनी मोक्षस्थः परिकीर्त्यसे॥ त्वं च नारद लोकेषु वायुवच्चपलो मुने

tyaktaniṁdāstutirmaunī mokṣasthaḥ parikīrtyase tvaṁ ca nārada lokeṣu vāyuvaccapalo mune

"Having renounced both blame and praise, silent, ever established in liberation — thus are you renowned. And yet, O Narada, O sage, you roam through the worlds restless as the wind."

Verse 6 (skanda.1.89.6)

सौदामिनीव विचरन्दृश्यसे प्राज्ञसंमतः॥ सदा कलिकरो लोके निर्दयः सर्वप्राणिषु

saudāminīva vicarandṛśyase prājñasaṁmataḥ sadā kalikaro loke nirdayaḥ sarvaprāṇiṣu

"You are seen moving about like a flash of lightning, and yet honored by the wise; ever stirring up discord in the world, seemingly merciless toward all beings."

Verse 7 (skanda.1.89.7)

बहूनां हि सहस्राणि देवगंधर्वरक्षसाम्॥ राज्ञां मुनीन्द्रदैत्यानां कलेर्नष्टानि तेऽभवन्

bahūnāṁ hi sahasrāṇi devagaṁdharvarakṣasām rājñāṁ munīndradaityānāṁ kalernaṣṭāni te'bhavan

"Many thousands among the gods, gandharvas, and rakshasas, among kings, foremost sages, and daityas, have perished because of the strife caused by you."

Verse 8 (skanda.1.89.8)

कस्मात्तदेषा चेष्टा ते संदेहं मे हर द्विज॥ संदेहान्न सुखं शेते बाणविद्धो मृगो यथा

kasmāttadeṣā ceṣṭā te saṁdehaṁ me hara dvija saṁdehānna sukhaṁ śete bāṇaviddho mṛgo yathā

"Why then is this your conduct? Remove my doubt, O brahmin. On account of doubt, one finds no peace, just as a deer pierced by an arrow finds none."

Verse 9 (skanda.1.89.9)

॥सूत उवाच॥ शौनकेदं वचः श्रुत्वा फाल्गुनान्नारदो मुनिः॥ प्रहसन्निव बाभ्रव्यवदनं स निरैक्षत

sūta uvāca śaunakedaṁ vacaḥ śrutvā phālgunānnārado muniḥ prahasanniva bābhravyavadanaṁ sa niraikṣata

Suta said: "O Shaunaka, hearing this speech from Phalguna, the sage Narada, as if smiling, looked toward the face of Babhravya."

Verse 10 (skanda.1.89.10)

स च बाभ्रव्यनामा वै हारीतस्यान्वयोद्भवः॥ ब्राह्मणो नारदमुनेः समीपे वर्तते सदा

sa ca bābhravyanāmā vai hārītasyānvayodbhavaḥ brāhmaṇo nāradamuneḥ samīpe vartate sadā

"That brahmin named Babhravya, born of the lineage of Harita, ever remains close by the sage Narada."

Verse 11 (skanda.1.89.11)

स च ज्ञात्वा महाबुद्धिर्नारदस्य मनीषितम्॥ प्रहसन्निव प्रोवाच फाल्गुनं स्निग्धया गिरा

sa ca jñātvā mahābuddhirnāradasya manīṣitam prahasanniva provāca phālgunaṁ snigdhayā girā

"And he, of great intelligence, understanding Narada's wish, spoke, as if smiling, to Phalguna in a gentle, affectionate voice:"

Verse 12 (skanda.1.89.12)

॥बाभ्रव्य उवाच॥ सत्यमेतद्यथात्थ त्वं नारदं प्रति पांडव॥ सर्वोऽपि चात्र वृत्तांते संशयं याति मानवः

bābhravya uvāca satyametadyathāttha tvaṁ nāradaṁ prati pāṁḍava sarvo'pi cātra vṛttāṁte saṁśayaṁ yāti mānavaḥ

Babhravya said: "True is this, O Pandava, just as you have said concerning Narada; indeed, every man falls into doubt over this very matter."

Verse 13 (skanda.1.89.13)

तदहं ते प्रवक्ष्यामि यथा कृष्णान्मया श्रुतम्॥ स्तोककालांतरे पूर्वं सर्वं यादवनंदनः

tadahaṁ te pravakṣyāmi yathā kṛṣṇānmayā śrutam stokakālāṁtare pūrvaṁ sarvaṁ yādavanaṁdanaḥ

"So I shall tell you all of it, just as I heard it from Krishna himself. Not long ago, the joy of the Yadu clan—"

Verse 14 (skanda.1.89.14)

महीसागरयात्रायां कृष्णस्तत्राययौ प्रभुः॥ उग्रसेनेन सहितो वसुदेवेन बभ्रुणा

mahīsāgarayātrāyāṁ kṛṣṇastatrāyayau prabhuḥ ugrasenena sahito vasudevena babhruṇā

"—the lord Krishna came there on a pilgrimage to Mahisagara, accompanied by Ugrasena, Vasudeva, and Babhru,"

Verse 15 (skanda.1.89.15)

रामेण रौक्मिणेयेन युयुधानादिभिस्तदा॥ स च ज्ञात्वा ज्ञातिसमं महीसागरसंगमे

rāmeṇa raukmiṇeyena yuyudhānādibhistadā sa ca jñātvā jñātisamaṁ mahīsāgarasaṁgame

"—by Rama (Balarama), by Rukmini's son, by Yuyudhana and others; and, judging it fitting for his kinsmen, at the confluence of Mahisagara,"

Verse 16 (skanda.1.89.16)

पिंडदानादिकं कृत्वा दत्त्वा दानानि भूरिशः॥ गुहेश्वरादिलिंगानि यत्नतः प्रतिपूज्य च

piṁḍadānādikaṁ kṛtvā dattvā dānāni bhūriśaḥ guheśvarādiliṁgāni yatnataḥ pratipūjya ca

"—having performed the pinda-offering and other rites, given gifts abundantly, and diligently worshipped the lingas beginning with Guheshvara,"

Verse 17 (skanda.1.89.17)

स्नानं कृत्वा कोटितीर्थे जयादित्यं समर्च्य च॥ पूजयन्नारदमुनिं युक्तः कृष्णो महामनाः

snānaṁ kṛtvā koṭitīrthe jayādityaṁ samarcya ca pūjayannāradamuniṁ yuktaḥ kṛṣṇo mahāmanāḥ

"—having bathed at Koti-tirtha and worshipped Jayaditya, and, with devotion, worshipping the sage Narada — thus was the great-souled Krishna engaged in these rites."

Verse 18 (skanda.1.89.18)

उग्रसेनेन राज्ञा वै पूर्वजेन जटायुना॥ मदादिविप्रमुख्यानां बहूनां चोपशृण्वताम्॥ उग्रसेनो महाराजः कृष्णं प्रोवाच संसदि

ugrasenena rājñā vai pūrvajena jaṭāyunā madādivipramukhyānāṁ bahūnāṁ copaśṛṇvatām ugraseno mahārājaḥ kṛṣṇaṁ provāca saṁsadi

"With King Ugrasena present, and the elder Jatayu, and while I myself and many other foremost brahmins listened, the great King Ugrasena addressed Krishna in that assembly:"

Verse 19 (skanda.1.89.19)

॥उग्रसेन उवाच॥ कृष्ण प्रक्ष्यामि त्वामेकं संशयं वद तं मम

ugrasena uvāca kṛṣṇa prakṣyāmi tvāmekaṁ saṁśayaṁ vada taṁ mama

Ugrasena said: "Krishna, I shall put to you a single question; tell me the answer to this doubt of mine."

Verse 20 (skanda.1.89.20)

योऽयं नाम महाबुद्धिर्नारदो विश्ववंदितः॥ कस्मादेषोऽतिचपलो वायुवद्भ्रमते जगत्॥ कलिप्रियश्च कस्माद्वा कस्मात्त्वय्यतिप्रीतिमान्

yo'yaṁ nāma mahābuddhirnārado viśvavaṁditaḥ kasmādeṣo'ticapalo vāyuvadbhramate jagat kalipriyaśca kasmādvā kasmāttvayyatiprītimān

"This Narada, so named, of great intelligence, honored by the whole world — why is he so exceedingly restless, wandering the world like the wind? And why is he fond of discord, and why is he so devoted to you?"

Verse 21 (skanda.1.89.21)

॥श्रीकृष्ण उवाच॥ सत्यं राजंस्त्वया पृष्टमेतत्सर्वं वदामि ते॥ दक्षेण तु पुरा शप्तो नारदो मुनिसत्तमः

śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca satyaṁ rājaṁstvayā pṛṣṭametatsarvaṁ vadāmi te dakṣeṇa tu purā śapto nārado munisattamaḥ

Sri Krishna said: "True is what you have asked, O king; I shall tell you all of it. Long ago, the noble sage Narada was cursed by Daksha."

Verse 22 (skanda.1.89.22)

सृष्टिमार्गांस्तु तान्वीक्ष्य नारदेन विचालितान्॥ नावस्थानं च लोकेषु भ्रमतस्ते भविष्यति

sṛṣṭimārgāṁstu tānvīkṣya nāradena vicālitān nāvasthānaṁ ca lokeṣu bhramataste bhaviṣyati

"Seeing the paths meant for continuing creation turned aside by Narada, Daksha pronounced: 'You shall have no fixed dwelling place, and shall wander ceaselessly through the worlds.'"

Verse 23 (skanda.1.89.23)

पैशुन्य वक्ता च तथा द्वितीयानां प्रचालनात्॥ इति शापद्वयं प्राप्य द्विविधात्मजचालनात्

paiśunya vaktā ca tathā dvitīyānāṁ pracālanāt iti śāpadvayaṁ prāpya dvividhātmajacālanāt

"'And, for turning aside a second group of sons, you shall become a speaker of slander.' Thus, for turning aside Daksha's sons on two separate occasions, Narada received these two curses."

Verse 24 (skanda.1.89.24)

निराकर्तुं समर्थोऽपि मुनिर्मेने तथैव तत्॥ एतावान्साधुवादो हि यतश्च क्षमते स्वयम्

nirākartuṁ samartho'pi munirmene tathaiva tat etāvānsādhuvādo hi yataśca kṣamate svayam

"Although the sage was fully capable of averting it, he accepted it just as it was given. For this alone is the true measure of a good man — that he himself endures with patience."

Verse 25 (skanda.1.89.25)

विनाशकालं चावेक्ष्य कलिं वर्धयते यतः॥ सत्यं च वक्ति तस्मात्स न च पापेन लिप्यते

vināśakālaṁ cāvekṣya kaliṁ vardhayate yataḥ satyaṁ ca vakti tasmātsa na ca pāpena lipyate

"Since he, foreseeing the appointed time of destruction, fosters discord accordingly, and speaks nothing but the truth, he is therefore never tainted by sin."

Verse 26 (skanda.1.89.26)

भ्रमतोऽपि च सर्वत्र नास्य यस्मात्पृथङ्मनः॥ ध्येयाद्भवति नैव स्याद्भ्रमदोषस्ततोस्य च॥ यच्च प्रीतिर्मयि तस्य परमा तच्छृणुष्व च

bhramato'pi ca sarvatra nāsya yasmātpṛthaṅmanaḥ dhyeyādbhavati naiva syādbhramadoṣastatosya ca yacca prītirmayi tasya paramā tacchṛṇuṣva ca

"And even while wandering everywhere, his mind never becomes separated from the object of his meditation; therefore no fault of wandering ever attaches to him. And now hear too of his supreme love for me."

Verse 27 (skanda.1.89.27)

अहं हि सर्वदा स्तौमि नारदं देवदर्शनम्॥ महेंद्रगदितेनैव स्तोत्रेण शृणु तन्नृप

ahaṁ hi sarvadā staumi nāradaṁ devadarśanam maheṁdragaditenaiva stotreṇa śṛṇu tannṛpa

"For I myself ever praise Narada, whose very sight is as good as the sight of a god, with the very hymn once spoken by Mahendra himself; hear that hymn now, O king."

Verse 28 (skanda.1.89.28)

श्रुतचारित्रयोर्जाता यस्याहंता न विद्यते॥ अगुप्तश्रुत चारित्रं नारदं तं नमाम्यहम्

śrutacāritrayorjātā yasyāhaṁtā na vidyate aguptaśruta cāritraṁ nāradaṁ taṁ namāmyaham

"In whom no pride has ever arisen over his own learning and conduct, whose learning and conduct remain ever open, unconcealed — to that Narada I bow."

Verse 29 (skanda.1.89.29)

अरतिक्रोधचापल्ये भयं नैतानि यस्य च॥ अदीर्घसूत्रं धीरं च नारदं तं नमाम्यहम्

aratikrodhacāpalye bhayaṁ naitāni yasya ca adīrghasūtraṁ dhīraṁ ca nāradaṁ taṁ namāmyaham

"Who fears neither discontent, nor anger, nor fickleness; who is never given to procrastination, and remains ever steadfast — to that Narada I bow."

Verse 30 (skanda.1.89.30)

कामाद्वा यदि वा लोभाद्वाचं यो नान्यथा वदेत्॥ उपास्यं सर्वजंतूनां नारदं तं नमाम्यहम्

kāmādvā yadi vā lobhādvācaṁ yo nānyathā vadet upāsyaṁ sarvajaṁtūnāṁ nāradaṁ taṁ namāmyaham

"Who, whether moved by desire or by greed, never speaks other than what is true; who is worthy of the reverence of all creatures — to that Narada I bow."

Verse 31 (skanda.1.89.31)

अध्यात्मगतितत्त्वज्ञं क्षांतं शक्तं जितेंद्रियम्॥ ऋजुं यथार्थ वक्तारं नारदं तं नमाम्यहम्

adhyātmagatitattvajñaṁ kṣāṁtaṁ śaktaṁ jiteṁdriyam ṛjuṁ yathārtha vaktāraṁ nāradaṁ taṁ namāmyaham

"Who knows the truth of the path of the inner self, patient, capable, master of his senses; upright, and a speaker only of what is true — to that Narada I bow."

Verse 32 (skanda.1.89.32)

तेजसा यशसा बुद्ध्या नयेन विनयेन च॥ जन्मना तपसा वृद्धं नारदं तं नमाम्यहम्

tejasā yaśasā buddhyā nayena vinayena ca janmanā tapasā vṛddhaṁ nāradaṁ taṁ namāmyaham

"Who is truly senior — in splendor, in fame, in intellect, in prudence and humility, and in birth and in austerity alike — to that Narada I bow."

Verse 33 (skanda.1.89.33)

सुखशीलं सुखं वेषं सुभोजं स्वाचरं शुभम्॥ सुचक्षुषं सुवाक्यं च नारदं तं नमाम्यहम्

sukhaśīlaṁ sukhaṁ veṣaṁ subhojaṁ svācaraṁ śubham sucakṣuṣaṁ suvākyaṁ ca nāradaṁ taṁ namāmyaham

"Of a contented disposition, of a pleasing appearance, moderate in his eating, auspicious in conduct; of clear sight and pleasant, gentle speech — to that Narada I bow."

Verse 34 (skanda.1.89.34)

कल्याणं कुरुते गाढं पापं यस्य न विद्यते॥ न प्रीयते परानर्थे यो ऽसौ तं नौमि नारदम्

kalyāṇaṁ kurute gāḍhaṁ pāpaṁ yasya na vidyate na prīyate parānarthe yo 'sau taṁ naumi nāradam

"Who works deep and lasting good, in whom no sin whatsoever dwells; who takes no delight in another's misfortune — to that Narada I offer my praise."

Verse 35 (skanda.1.89.35)

वेदस्मृतिपुराणोक्तधर्मे यो नित्यमास्थितः॥ प्रियाप्रियविमुक्तं तं नारदं प्रणमाम्यहम्

vedasmṛtipurāṇoktadharme yo nityamāsthitaḥ priyāpriyavimuktaṁ taṁ nāradaṁ praṇamāmyaham

"Who is ever established in the dharma declared by the Vedas, the Smritis, and the Puranas; who is free from both what is pleasant and what is unpleasant — to that Narada I bow low."

Verse 36 (skanda.1.89.36)

अशनादिष्वलिप्तं च पंडितं नालसं द्विजम्॥ बहुश्रुतं चित्रकथं नारदं प्रणमाम्यहम्

aśanādiṣvaliptaṁ ca paṁḍitaṁ nālasaṁ dvijam bahuśrutaṁ citrakathaṁ nāradaṁ praṇamāmyaham

"Unattached to food and such matters, learned, never idle, a true brahmin; a man of vast learning, wondrous in his tales — to that Narada I bow low."

Verse 37 (skanda.1.89.37)

नार्थे क्रोधे च कामे च भूतपूर्वोऽस्य विभ्रमः॥ येनैते नाशिता दोषा नारदं तं नमाम्यहम्

nārthe krodhe ca kāme ca bhūtapūrvo'sya vibhramaḥ yenaite nāśitā doṣā nāradaṁ taṁ namāmyaham

"In whom no delusion has ever arisen concerning wealth, anger, or desire, by whom these very faults have all been destroyed — to that Narada I bow."

Verse 38 (skanda.1.89.38)

वीतसंमोहदोषो यो दृढभक्तिश्च श्रेयसि॥ सुनयं सत्रपं तं च नारदं प्रणमाम्यहम्

vītasaṁmohadoṣo yo dṛḍhabhaktiśca śreyasi sunayaṁ satrapaṁ taṁ ca nāradaṁ praṇamāmyaham

"Who is free of the fault of delusion, and holds firm devotion to what is truly good; of sound judgment and gentle modesty — to that Narada I bow low."

Verse 39 (skanda.1.89.39)

असक्तः सर्वसंगेषु यः सक्तात्मेति लक्ष्यते॥ अदीर्घसंशंयो वाग्ग्मी नारदं तं नमाम्यहम्

asaktaḥ sarvasaṁgeṣu yaḥ saktātmeti lakṣyate adīrghasaṁśaṁyo vāggmī nāradaṁ taṁ namāmyaham

"Who, though unattached to every worldly tie, appears as if engaged and attached, for the good of the world; free of lingering doubt, and eloquent in speech — to that Narada I bow."

Verse 40 (skanda.1.89.40)

न त्यजत्यागमं किंचिद्यस्तपो नोपजीवति॥ अवंध्यकालो यस्यात्मा तमहं नौमि नारदम्

na tyajatyāgamaṁ kiṁcidyastapo nopajīvati avaṁdhyakālo yasyātmā tamahaṁ naumi nāradam

"Who abandons nothing of the sacred tradition, who does not live off the fruits of his own austerity; whose every moment is spent fruitfully — that Narada I praise."

Verse 41 (skanda.1.89.41)

कृतश्रमं कृतप्रज्ञं न च तृप्तं समाधितः॥ नित्यं यत्नात्प्रमत्तं च नारदं तं नमाम्यहम्

kṛtaśramaṁ kṛtaprajñaṁ na ca tṛptaṁ samādhitaḥ nityaṁ yatnātpramattaṁ ca nāradaṁ taṁ namāmyaham

"Diligent in effort, accomplished in wisdom, yet never content with his attainment in meditation; ever watchful in his striving, never careless — to that Narada I bow."

Verse 42 (skanda.1.89.42)

न हृष्यत्यर्थलाभेन योऽलाभे न व्यथत्यपि॥ स्थिरबुद्धिरसक्तात्मा तमहं नौमि नारदम्

na hṛṣyatyarthalābhena yo'lābhe na vyathatyapi sthirabuddhirasaktātmā tamahaṁ naumi nāradam

"Who is not elated by the gain of wealth, nor troubled by its loss; steady of intellect, and unattached in spirit — that Narada I praise."

Verse 43 (skanda.1.89.43)

तं सर्वगुणसंपन्नं दक्षं शुचिमकातरम्॥ कालज्ञं च नयज्ञं च शरणं यामि नारदम्

taṁ sarvaguṇasaṁpannaṁ dakṣaṁ śucimakātaram kālajñaṁ ca nayajñaṁ ca śaraṇaṁ yāmi nāradam

"To him, endowed with every virtue, skillful, pure, undaunted, knowing the right time for all things, and knowing right policy — to Narada I go for refuge."

Verse 44 (skanda.1.89.44)

इमं स्तवं नारदस्य नित्यं राजन्पठाम्यहम्॥ तेन मे परमा प्रीतिं करोति मुनिसत्तमः

imaṁ stavaṁ nāradasya nityaṁ rājanpaṭhāmyaham tena me paramā prītiṁ karoti munisattamaḥ

"This hymn to Narada I recite daily, O king; and through it, that foremost of sages bestows his supreme love upon me."

Verse 45 (skanda.1.89.45)

अन्योपि यः शुचिर्भूत्वा नित्यमेतां स्तुतिं जपेत्॥ अचिरात्तस्य देवर्षिः प्रसादं कुरुते परम्

anyopi yaḥ śucirbhūtvā nityametāṁ stutiṁ japet acirāttasya devarṣiḥ prasādaṁ kurute param

"Whoever else, having purified himself, recites this hymn daily, upon him the divine sage soon bestows his supreme grace."

Verse 46 (skanda.1.89.46)

एतान्गुणान्नारदस्य त्वमथाकर्ण्य पार्थिव॥ जप नित्यं स्तवं पुण्यं प्रीतस्ते भविता मुनिः

etānguṇānnāradasya tvamathākarṇya pārthiva japa nityaṁ stavaṁ puṇyaṁ prītaste bhavitā muniḥ

"Having heard these virtues of Narada, O king, recite this meritorious hymn every day; by this, the sage will become pleased with you."

Verse 47 (skanda.1.89.47)

॥बाभ्रव्य उवाच॥ इति कृष्णमुखाच्छ्रुत्वा नारदस्य गुणान्नृपः॥ बभूव परमप्री तश्चक्रे तच्च तथा वचः

bābhravya uvāca iti kṛṣṇamukhācchrutvā nāradasya guṇānnṛpaḥ babhūva paramaprī taścakre tacca tathā vacaḥ

Babhravya said: "Thus, having heard the virtues of Narada from Krishna's own mouth, the king became supremely delighted, and did exactly as he had been told."

Verse 48 (skanda.1.89.48)

ततो नारदमानर्च दत्त्वा दानं च पुष्कलम्॥ नारदीयद्विजाग्र्याणां नारदः प्रीयतामिति

tato nāradamānarca dattvā dānaṁ ca puṣkalam nāradīyadvijāgryāṇāṁ nāradaḥ prīyatāmiti

"Then he worshipped Narada, and giving abundant gifts to the foremost brahmins of the Naradiya place, prayed: 'May Narada be pleased.'"

Verse 49 (skanda.1.89.49)

ययौ द्वारवतीं कृष्णः सभ्रातृजातिबांधवः॥ तीर्थयात्रामिमां कृत्वा विधिवत्पुरुषोत्तमः

yayau dvāravatīṁ kṛṣṇaḥ sabhrātṛjātibāṁdhavaḥ tīrthayātrāmimāṁ kṛtvā vidhivatpuruṣottamaḥ

"Then Krishna, the Supreme Person, having duly completed this pilgrimage, went to Dvaravati, along with his brothers, kinsmen, and relatives."

Verse 50 (skanda.1.89.50)

तथा त्वमपि कौरव्य नारदस्य गुणानिमान्॥ श्रुत्वा श्रद्धामयो भूत्वा शृणु कृत्यं यदत्र च

tathā tvamapi kauravya nāradasya guṇānimān śrutvā śraddhāmayo bhūtvā śṛṇu kṛtyaṁ yadatra ca

"So you too, O scion of the Kurus, having heard these virtues of Narada, and becoming filled with faith, now hear what is to be done here."

Verse 51 (skanda.1.89.51)

कार्तिके शुक्लद्वादश्यां प्रबोधिन्यामसौ मुनिः॥ विष्णोर्ध्यानसमाधेश्च प्रबुद्धो जायते सदा

kārtike śukladvādaśyāṁ prabodhinyāmasau muniḥ viṣṇordhyānasamādheśca prabuddho jāyate sadā

"On the twelfth day of the bright fortnight of Kartika, called Prabodhini, this sage ever awakens from his deep meditative absorption upon Vishnu."

Verse 52 (skanda.1.89.52)

तस्मिन्दिने नारदेन निर्मितेऽत्रैव कूपके॥ स्नानं कृत्वा प्रयत्नेन श्राद्धं कुर्यात्समाहितः

tasmindine nāradena nirmite'traiva kūpake snānaṁ kṛtvā prayatnena śrāddhaṁ kuryātsamāhitaḥ

"On that day, in this very well made by Narada, one should bathe and, with diligence and a composed mind, perform the shraddha."

Verse 53 (skanda.1.89.53)

तपो दानं जपश्चात्र कूपे भवति चाक्षयम्

tapo dānaṁ japaścātra kūpe bhavati cākṣayam

"Austerity, giving, and recitation performed here at this well all become imperishable."

Verse 54 (skanda.1.89.54)

इदं विष्ण्विति मंत्रेण ततो विष्णुं प्रबोधयेत्॥ नारदं च मुनिं पश्चान्मन्त्रेणानेन पांडव

idaṁ viṣṇviti maṁtreṇa tato viṣṇuṁ prabodhayet nāradaṁ ca muniṁ paścānmantreṇānena pāṁḍava

"Then, with the mantra beginning 'idaṁ viṣṇu' — this is Vishnu — one should awaken Vishnu; and afterward, O Pandava, one should awaken the sage Narada with this mantra:"

Verse 55 (skanda.1.89.55)

योगनिद्रा यथा त्यक्ता हरिणा मुनिसत्तम॥ तथा लोकोपकाराय भवानपि परित्यज

yoganidrā yathā tyaktā hariṇā munisattama tathā lokopakārāya bhavānapi parityaja

"'Just as Hari, O foremost of sages, has now abandoned his meditative sleep, so may you too abandon yours, for the benefit and welfare of the world.'"

Verse 56 (skanda.1.89.56)

इति मंत्रेण चोत्थाप्य नारदं परिपूजयेत्॥ कृष्णप्रोदितया स्तुत्या छत्रधोत्रार्चनैः शुभैः

iti maṁtreṇa cotthāpya nāradaṁ paripūjayet kṛṣṇaproditayā stutyā chatradhotrārcanaiḥ śubhaiḥ

"With this mantra, having thus awakened him, one should worship Narada in full, with the hymn spoken by Krishna, and with auspicious offerings of an umbrella and a cloth."

Verse 57 (skanda.1.89.57)

शक्त्या द्विजानां देयं च छत्रं धोत्रं कमंडलुम्॥ प्रणम्य ब्राह्मणान्भक्त्या नारदः प्रीयतामिति

śaktyā dvijānāṁ deyaṁ ca chatraṁ dhotraṁ kamaṁḍalum praṇamya brāhmaṇānbhaktyā nāradaḥ prīyatāmiti

"And to the best of one's ability, one should give the brahmins an umbrella, a cloth, and a water-pot; and, having bowed to the brahmins with devotion, one should pray: 'May Narada be pleased.'"

Verse 58 (skanda.1.89.58)

एवं कृते प्रसादात्स मुनेः पापेन मुच्यते॥ जायते न कलिस्तस्य न चासौख्यं भवेदिह

evaṁ kṛte prasādātsa muneḥ pāpena mucyate jāyate na kalistasya na cāsaukhyaṁ bhavediha

"When this is duly performed, by the grace of that sage, one is freed from sin; discord never arises for him, nor does any misfortune befall him in this life."
