Verse 1 (skanda.1.95.1)

॥सूत उवाच॥ सोऽथ प्राग्ज्योतिषाद्बाह्ये महोपवनसंस्थितम् ॥ सहस्रभूमिकं गेहमपश्यत हिरण्मयम्

||sūta uvāca|| so'tha prāgjyotiṣādbāhye mahopavanasaṁsthitam || sahasrabhūmikaṁ gehamapaśyata hiraṇmayam

Suta said: Then, outside Pragjyotisha, situated within a great pleasure-grove, he saw a golden mansion of a thousand storeys,

Verse 2 (skanda.1.95.2)

वेणुवीणामृदंगानां निःस्वनैः परिपूरितम् ॥ दशसाहस्रसंख्याभिश्चेटीभिः परिपूरितम्

veṇuvīṇāmṛdaṁgānāṁ niḥsvanaiḥ paripūritam || daśasāhasrasaṁkhyābhiśceṭībhiḥ paripūritam

filled with the sounds of flutes, vinas, and mridangas, and thronged with ten thousand maidservants,

Verse 3 (skanda.1.95.3)

आयाद्भिः प्रतियाद्भिश्च भगदत्तस्य किंकरैः ॥ किमिच्छन्तीति भगिनी पृच्छकैरभिपूरितम्

āyādbhiḥ pratiyādbhiśca bhagadattasya kiṁkaraiḥ || kimicchantīti bhaginī pṛcchakairabhipūritam

with Bhagadatta's servants coming and going, and filled with those asking, "What does our lady desire?"

Verse 4 (skanda.1.95.4)

तदासाद्य स हैडंबिर्मेरोः शिखरवद्ग्रहम् ॥ द्वारि स्थितां संददर्श कर्णप्रावरणां सखीम्

tadāsādya sa haiḍaṁbirmeroḥ śikharavadgraham || dvāri sthitāṁ saṁdadarśa karṇaprāvaraṇāṁ sakhīm

Reaching that mansion, resembling a peak of Meru, Hidimba's son saw, standing at the door, a companion named Karnapravarana.

Verse 5 (skanda.1.95.5)

तामाह ललितं वीरो भद्रे सा क्व मुरोः सुता ॥ कामुको द्रष्टुमिच्छामि दूरदेशागतोऽतिथिः

tāmāha lalitaṁ vīro bhadre sā kva muroḥ sutā || kāmuko draṣṭumicchāmi dūradeśāgato'tithiḥ

The hero spoke to her gently: "O gentle one, where is she, the daughter of Mura? A suitor from a far land, I wish to see her, being her guest."

Verse 6 (skanda.1.95.6)

॥कर्णप्रावरणोवाच॥ किं तवास्ति महाबाहो तया मौर्व्या प्रयोजनम् ॥ कोटिशो निहताः पूर्वं तया कामुक कामुकाः

||karṇaprāvaraṇovāca|| kiṁ tavāsti mahābāho tayā maurvyā prayojanam || koṭiśo nihatāḥ pūrvaṁ tayā kāmuka kāmukāḥ

Karnapravarana said: "What business, O mighty-armed one, have you with that Maurvi? O suitor, countless suitors have already been slain by her before.

Verse 7 (skanda.1.95.7)

तव रूपमहं दृष्ट्वा घटहासं सदोत्कचम् ॥ प्रणम्य पादयोर्वीर स्थिता ते वचनंकरी

tava rūpamahaṁ dṛṣṭvā ghaṭahāsaṁ sadotkacam || praṇamya pādayorvīra sthitā te vacanaṁkarī

Yet, seeing your form, so full of laughter, ever crowned with flowing hair, O hero, I bow at your feet and stand ready to do your bidding.

Verse 8 (skanda.1.95.8)

तन्मया सह मोदस्व भुंक्ष्व भोगांश्च कामुक ॥ दास्याम्यनुचराणां ते त्रयाणां च प्रियात्रयम्

tanmayā saha modasva bhuṁkṣva bhogāṁśca kāmuka || dāsyāmyanucarāṇāṁ te trayāṇāṁ ca priyātrayam

"Therefore rejoice with me, O suitor, and enjoy pleasures with me; I shall give delight threefold to your three attendants as well."

Verse 9 (skanda.1.95.9)

॥घटोत्कच उवाच॥ कल्याणि किंवदंती ते प्रमुक्ता स्वोचिता शुभे ॥ पुनर्नैतद्वचस्तुभ्यं विशते मम चेतसि

||ghaṭotkaca uvāca|| kalyāṇi kiṁvadaṁtī te pramuktā svocitā śubhe || punarnaitadvacastubhyaṁ viśate mama cetasi

Ghatotkacha said: "O auspicious one, this speech of yours, though fitting for you to utter, does not enter my heart at all.

Verse 10 (skanda.1.95.10)

वामः कामो यतो भद्रे यस्मिन्नुपनिबद्ध्यते ॥ स चात्र नैव बध्नाति तद्वयं कि प्रकुर्महे

vāmaḥ kāmo yato bhadre yasminnupanibaddhyate || sa cātra naiva badhnāti tadvayaṁ ki prakurmahe

"For desire, O gentle one, is contrary — it binds itself only where it will; here it does not bind me at all — what then can I do about it?

Verse 11 (skanda.1.95.11)

अद्य ते स्वामिनी दृष्टा जिता वा क्रीडते मया ॥ तया वा विजितो यास्ये पूर्वेषां कामिनां गतिम्

adya te svāminī dṛṣṭā jitā vā krīḍate mayā || tayā vā vijito yāsye pūrveṣāṁ kāmināṁ gatim

"Today either I shall see your mistress and, having conquered her, sport with her, or else, conquered by her, I shall go the way of those earlier suitors.

Verse 12 (skanda.1.95.12)

कर्णप्रावरणे तस्माच्छीघ्रमेव निवेद्यताम् ॥ यथा दर्शनमात्रेण पूजयंत्यतिथिं खलु

karṇaprāvaraṇe tasmācchīghrameva nivedyatām || yathā darśanamātreṇa pūjayaṁtyatithiṁ khalu

"Therefore, O Karnapravarana, announce me at once — for indeed, guests are honored merely by being received."

Verse 13 (skanda.1.95.13)

इति भैमेर्वचः श्रुत्वा प्रस्खलंती निशाचरी ॥ प्रासादशिखरस्थां तां मौर्वीमेवं वचोवदत्

iti bhaimervacaḥ śrutvā praskhalaṁtī niśācarī || prāsādaśikharasthāṁ tāṁ maurvīmevaṁ vacovadat

Hearing these words of Bhima's grandson, the night-wanderer, stumbling in haste, went and spoke thus to Maurvi, who was seated atop the palace:

Verse 14 (skanda.1.95.14)

देवि कोऽपि युवा श्रीमांस्त्रैलोक्येष्वमितप्रभः ॥ कामातिथिस्तव द्वारि वर्तते दिश तत्परम्

devi ko'pi yuvā śrīmāṁstrailokyeṣvamitaprabhaḥ || kāmātithistava dvāri vartate diśa tatparam

"O goddess, a certain youth, glorious, of boundless splendor in the three worlds, a love-seeking guest, waits at your door — give your command in this matter."

Verse 15 (skanda.1.95.15)

॥कामकटंकटोवाच॥ मुच्यतां शीघ्रमेवासौ किमर्थं वा विलंबसे ॥ कदाचिद्देवसंगत्या समयो मेऽभिपूर्यते

||kāmakaṭaṁkaṭovāca|| mucyatāṁ śīghramevāsau kimarthaṁ vā vilaṁbase || kadāciddevasaṁgatyā samayo me'bhipūryate

Kamakatankata said: "Let him be sent in at once — why do you delay? Perhaps, by the meeting ordained by the gods, my own appointed hour has now come."

Verse 16 (skanda.1.95.16)

इत्युक्तवचनाच्चेटी प्राप्यावोचद्घटोत्कचम् ॥ व्रज शीघ्रं कामुक त्वं तस्या मृत्योश्च सन्निधौ

ityuktavacanācceṭī prāpyāvocadghaṭotkacam || vraja śīghraṁ kāmuka tvaṁ tasyā mṛtyośca sannidhau

Having received this word, the maid went and said to Ghatotkacha: "Go quickly, O suitor, into the presence — of her, and of death."

Verse 17 (skanda.1.95.17)

इत्युक्तः स प्रहस्यैव तत्रोत्सृज्य स्वकानुगान् ॥ प्रविवेश गृहं भैमिः सिंहो मेरुगुहामिव

ityuktaḥ sa prahasyaiva tatrotsṛjya svakānugān || praviveśa gṛhaṁ bhaimiḥ siṁho meruguhāmiva

Thus addressed, he, laughing, leaving his companions there, entered the mansion — Bhima's grandson, like a lion entering a cave of Meru.

Verse 18 (skanda.1.95.18)

स पश्यञ्छुकसंघातान्पारावतगणांस्तथा ॥ सारिकाश्च मदोन्मत्ताश्चेटीस्तां चाप्यपश्यत

sa paśyañchukasaṁghātānpārāvatagaṇāṁstathā || sārikāśca madonmattāśceṭīstāṁ cāpyapaśyata

Seeing flocks of parrots, and likewise groups of doves, and mynahs intoxicated with joy, and the maidservants, he then also beheld her,

Verse 19 (skanda.1.95.19)

रूपेण वयसः चैव रतेरपि रतिंकरीम् ॥ आंदोलकसुखासीनां सर्वाभरणभूषिताम्

rūpeṇa vayasaḥ caiva raterapi ratiṁkarīm || āṁdolakasukhāsīnāṁ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitām

who, in beauty and in the bloom of youth, would delight even Rati herself; seated at ease upon a swing, adorned with every ornament.

Verse 20 (skanda.1.95.20)

तां विद्युतमिवोन्नद्धां दृष्ट्वा भैमिरचिंतयत ॥ अहो कृष्णेन पित्रा मे निर्दिष्टेयं ममोचिता

tāṁ vidyutamivonnaddhāṁ dṛṣṭvā bhaimiraciṁtayata || aho kṛṣṇena pitrā me nirdiṣṭeyaṁ mamocitā

Seeing her, blazing forth like lightning, Bhima's grandson thought: "Ah, this indeed is she whom my father Krishna pointed out as fit for me.

Verse 21 (skanda.1.95.21)

न्याय्यमेतत्कृते पूर्वं नष्टा यत्कामिनां गणाः ॥ शरीरक्षयपर्याप्तं क्षीयते यदि कामिनाम्

nyāyyametatkṛte pūrvaṁ naṣṭā yatkāmināṁ gaṇāḥ || śarīrakṣayaparyāptaṁ kṣīyate yadi kāminām

"This is only just — that hosts of suitors perished before on her account; for what use is the mere waste of a body, if a suitor is destroyed?

Verse 22 (skanda.1.95.22)

कामिनीनां कृते येषां क्षीयते गणनात्र का ॥ एवं बहुविधं कामी चिंतयन्नाह भीमभूः

kāminīnāṁ kṛte yeṣāṁ kṣīyate gaṇanātra kā || evaṁ bahuvidhaṁ kāmī ciṁtayannāha bhīmabhūḥ

"But for the sake of such beautiful women, how could one begrudge the count of those who perish?" Thinking thus, in various ways, the desirous one, Bhima's offspring, then spoke:

Verse 23 (skanda.1.95.23)

निष्ठुरे वज्रहृदये प्राप्तोऽहमतिथिस्तव ॥ उचितां तत्सतां पूजां कुरु या ते हृदि स्थिता

niṣṭhure vajrahṛdaye prāpto'hamatithistava || ucitāṁ tatsatāṁ pūjāṁ kuru yā te hṛdi sthitā

"O hard one, of heart like thunderbolt, I have come as your guest — grant me, then, that fitting welcome to guests which dwells in your heart."

Verse 24 (skanda.1.95.24)

इति हैडंबिवचनं श्रुत्वा कामकटंकटा ॥ विस्मिताभूत्तस्य रूपात्स्वं निनिंद च बालिशम्

iti haiḍaṁbivacanaṁ śrutvā kāmakaṭaṁkaṭā || vismitābhūttasya rūpātsvaṁ niniṁda ca bāliśam

Hearing these words of Hidimba's son, Kamakatankata was struck with wonder at his form, and reproached herself as foolish.

Verse 25 (skanda.1.95.25)

धिगहं यन्मया पूर्वं समयः स कृतोऽभवत् ॥ न कृतोऽभूद्यदि पुरा अभविष्यदसौ पतिः

dhigahaṁ yanmayā pūrvaṁ samayaḥ sa kṛto'bhavat || na kṛto'bhūdyadi purā abhaviṣyadasau patiḥ

"Shame on me, that I made that vow of old! Had I not made it before, he might already have been my husband."

Verse 26 (skanda.1.95.26)

इति संचिन्तयन्ती सा भैमिं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥ वृथा त्वमागतो भद्र जीवन्याहि पुनः सुखी

iti saṁcintayantī sā bhaimiṁ vacanamabravīt || vṛthā tvamāgato bhadra jīvanyāhi punaḥ sukhī

Thinking thus, she said to Bhima's grandson: "In vain have you come, O gentle one — go back happily while you yet live.

Verse 27 (skanda.1.95.27)

अथ कामयसे मां त्वं तत्कथां शीघ्रमुच्चर ॥ कथामाभाष्य यदि मां सन्देहे पातयिष्यसि ॥ ततोऽहं वशगा जाता हतो वा स्वप्स्यसे मया

atha kāmayase māṁ tvaṁ tatkathāṁ śīghramuccara || kathāmābhāṣya yadi māṁ sandehe pātayiṣyasi || tato'haṁ vaśagā jātā hato vā svapsyase mayā

"But if you truly desire me, then quickly propose your riddle. If, by proposing it, you should cast me into doubt, unable to answer, then I shall become yours; but if not, you shall sleep in death, slain by me."

Verse 28 (skanda.1.95.28)

॥सूत उवाच॥ इत्युक्तवचनामेतां नेत्रोपांतेन वीक्ष्य सः

||sūta uvāca|| ityuktavacanāmetāṁ netropāṁtena vīkṣya saḥ

Suta said: Having heard her speak thus, and glancing at her from the corner of his eye,

स्मृत्वा चराचरगुरुं कृष्णमारब्धवान्कथाम् ॥ कस्यांचिदभवत्पत्न्यां युवा कोऽप्यजितेद्रियः

smṛtvā carācaraguruṁ kṛṣṇamārabdhavānkathām || kasyāṁcidabhavatpatnyāṁ yuvā ko'pyajitedriyaḥ

he, remembering Krishna, the guru of all moving and unmoving beings, began this riddle-tale: "There was a certain young man, of unconquered senses, who took a wife—

Verse 30 (skanda.1.95.30)

तस्य चैका सुता जज्ञे भार्या तस्य मृताऽभवत् ॥ ततो बालकिकां पुत्रीं ररक्ष च पुपोष च

tasya caikā sutā jajñe bhāryā tasya mṛtā'bhavat || tato bālakikāṁ putrīṁ rarakṣa ca pupoṣa ca

"—by her a single daughter was born, and then his wife died. He thereafter protected and raised that infant daughter himself.

Verse 31 (skanda.1.95.31)

सा यदाभूद्यौवनगा व्यंजितावयवा शुभा ॥ प्रोल्लसत्कुचमध्यांगी प्रोल्लसन्मुखपंकजा

sā yadābhūdyauvanagā vyaṁjitāvayavā śubhā || prollasatkucamadhyāṁgī prollasanmukhapaṁkajā

"When she came into her youth, her limbs now fully formed and lovely, her waist slender between full breasts, her lotus face radiant,

Verse 32 (skanda.1.95.32)

तदास्य कामलुलितमालानं प्रजहौ मनः ॥ प्रोवाच तां च तनयां समालिंग्य दुराशयः

tadāsya kāmalulitamālānaṁ prajahau manaḥ || provāca tāṁ ca tanayāṁ samāliṁgya durāśayaḥ

"then his mind, shaken by the post of desire, lost its restraint; and, embracing his own daughter, he, of evil intent, said to her:

Verse 33 (skanda.1.95.33)

प्रातिवेश्मकपुत्री त्वं मयानीयात्र पोषिता ॥ भार्यार्थं सुचिरं कालं तत्कार्यं साधय प्रिये

prātiveśmakaputrī tvaṁ mayānīyātra poṣitā || bhāryārthaṁ suciraṁ kālaṁ tatkāryaṁ sādhaya priye

"'You are the daughter of my neighbor, brought here and raised by me all this long while so that you might become my wife — accomplish that purpose now, my dear.'

Verse 34 (skanda.1.95.34)

इत्युक्ता सा च मेने च तत्तथैव वचस्तदा ॥ पतित्वेन च भेजे तं भार्यात्वेन स तां तथा

ityuktā sā ca mene ca tattathaiva vacastadā || patitvena ca bheje taṁ bhāryātvena sa tāṁ tathā

"Thus addressed, she accepted his word as true, and took him as her husband; and he likewise took her as his wife.

Verse 35 (skanda.1.95.35)

ततस्तस्यां सुता जज्ञे तस्मान्मदनरासभात् ॥ वद सा तस्य भवति किं दौहित्री सुताऽथवा ॥ एनं प्रश्नं मम ब्रूहि शीघ्रं चेच्छक्तिरस्ति ते

tatastasyāṁ sutā jajñe tasmānmadanarāsabhāt || vada sā tasya bhavati kiṁ dauhitrī sutā'thavā || enaṁ praśnaṁ mama brūhi śīghraṁ cecchaktirasti te

"Then, from him — that ass driven by lust — a daughter was born to her. Tell me: is this child, to him, his granddaughter, or his daughter? Answer me this riddle at once, if you have the power."

Verse 36 (skanda.1.95.36)

॥सूत उवाच॥ इति प्रश्नं सा च श्रुत्वा चिंतयद्बहुधा हृदि

||sūta uvāca|| iti praśnaṁ sā ca śrutvā ciṁtayadbahudhā hṛdi

Suta said: Hearing this riddle, she pondered it deeply in her heart in many ways,

Verse 37 (skanda.1.95.37)

न च पश्यति निर्द्धारं प्रश्नस्यास्य कथंचन ॥ ततः प्रश्नेन विजिता स्वां शक्तिं समुपाददे

na ca paśyati nirddhāraṁ praśnasyāsya kathaṁcana || tataḥ praśnena vijitā svāṁ śaktiṁ samupādade

but could find no resolution to this riddle by any means. Then, defeated by the riddle, she resorted to her own magical power.

Verse 38 (skanda.1.95.38)

अताडयद्रुक्मरज्जुं कराभ्यां दोलकस्य च ॥ ततो रक्षांसि निष्पेतुः कोटिशो भीषणान्यति

atāḍayadrukmarajjuṁ karābhyāṁ dolakasya ca || tato rakṣāṁsi niṣpetuḥ koṭiśo bhīṣaṇānyati

With both hands she struck the golden cord of her swing, and at once countless terrifying rakshasas sprang forth,

Verse 39 (skanda.1.95.39)

सिंहव्याघ्रवराहाश्च महिषाश्चित्रका मृगाः ॥ समीक्ष्य तानसंख्येयान्खादितुं धावतो रुषा

siṁhavyāghravarāhāśca mahiṣāścitrakā mṛgāḥ || samīkṣya tānasaṁkhyeyānkhādituṁ dhāvato ruṣā

along with lions, tigers, boars, buffaloes, and spotted deer — all these, innumerable, seeing him, rushed forward in fury to devour him.

Verse 40 (skanda.1.95.40)

अवादयन्नखौ भैमिः कनिष्ठांगुष्ठजौ हसन् ॥ ततो विनिःसृतास्तत्र द्विगुणा राक्षसादयः

avādayannakhau bhaimiḥ kaniṣṭhāṁguṣṭhajau hasan || tato viniḥsṛtāstatra dviguṇā rākṣasādayaḥ

Laughing, Bhima's grandson snapped the nails of his little finger and thumb together; and then, from that sound, twice as many rakshasas and the like poured forth,

Verse 41 (skanda.1.95.41)

तैर्मौर्वीनिर्मिताः सर्वे क्षणादेव स्म भक्षिताः ॥ विजितायां स्वशक्तौ च बलशक्तिमथाददे

tairmaurvīnirmitāḥ sarve kṣaṇādeva sma bhakṣitāḥ || vijitāyāṁ svaśaktau ca balaśaktimathādade

and by them all of Maurvi's creatures were devoured in an instant. Her own magical power thus defeated, she then resorted to the power of physical strength.

Verse 42 (skanda.1.95.42)

उत्थाय सहसा दोलात्खड्गमादातुमैच्छत ॥ उत्तिष्ठंतीं च तां भैमिरनुसृत्य जवादिव

utthāya sahasā dolātkhaḍgamādātumaicchata || uttiṣṭhaṁtīṁ ca tāṁ bhaimiranusṛtya javādiva

Rising suddenly from the swing, she sought to seize her sword; but as she rose, Bhima's grandson pursued her swiftly,

Verse 43 (skanda.1.95.43)

केशेष्वादाय सव्येन पाणिनाऽपातयद्भुवि ॥ ततः कंठे सव्यपादं दत्त्वादाय च कर्तिकाम्

keśeṣvādāya savyena pāṇinā'pātayadbhuvi || tataḥ kaṁṭhe savyapādaṁ dattvādāya ca kartikām

seized her by her hair with his left hand and threw her to the ground; then, placing his left foot upon her throat, and taking hold of a small knife,

Verse 44 (skanda.1.95.44)

दक्षिणेन करेणास्याश्छेत्तुमैच्छत नासिकाम्॥ विस्फुरंती ततो मौर्वी मंदमाह घटोत्कचम्

dakṣiṇena kareṇāsyāśchettumaicchata nāsikām|| visphuraṁtī tato maurvī maṁdamāha ghaṭotkacam

he sought with his right hand to cut off her nose. Then Maurvi, trembling, spoke softly to Ghatotkacha:

Verse 45 (skanda.1.95.45)

प्रश्नेन शक्त्या च बलेन नाथ त्रिधा त्वयाहं विजिता नमस्ते ॥ तन्मुंच मां कर्मकरी तवास्मि समादिश त्वं प्रकरोमि तच्च

praśnena śaktyā ca balena nātha tridhā tvayāhaṁ vijitā namaste || tanmuṁca māṁ karmakarī tavāsmi samādiśa tvaṁ prakaromi tacca

"By your riddle, by your power, and by your strength, O lord, I have been conquered three times over — homage to you! Release me; I am your servant — command me, and I shall do as you say."

Verse 46 (skanda.1.95.46)

॥घटोत्कच उवाच॥ यद्येवं तर्हि मुक्तासि भूयो दर्शय यद्बलम् ॥ एवमुक्त्वा मुमोचैनां मुक्ता चाह प्रणम्य सा

||ghaṭotkaca uvāca|| yadyevaṁ tarhi muktāsi bhūyo darśaya yadbalam || evamuktvā mumocaināṁ muktā cāha praṇamya sā

Ghatotkacha said: "If it is so, then you are released — show me now once more what strength you have." Having said this, he released her; and she, freed, bowed and said:

Verse 47 (skanda.1.95.47)

जानामि त्वां महाबाहो वीरं शक्तिमतां वरम् ॥ सर्वराक्षसभर्तारं त्रैलोक्येऽमितविक्रमम्

jānāmi tvāṁ mahābāho vīraṁ śaktimatāṁ varam || sarvarākṣasabhartāraṁ trailokye'mitavikramam

"I know you, O mighty-armed one, hero, foremost of the powerful, lord of all rakshasas, of measureless valor in the three worlds—

Verse 48 (skanda.1.95.48)

गुह्यकाधिपतिस्त्वं हि कालनाभ इति स्मृतः ॥ षष्टिकोटिपतिर्जातो यक्षरक्षाकृते भुवि

guhyakādhipatistvaṁ hi kālanābha iti smṛtaḥ || ṣaṣṭikoṭipatirjāto yakṣarakṣākṛte bhuvi

"—you are indeed the lord of the Guhyakas, known as Kalanabha, born as ruler over sixty crores, for the protection of the Yakshas upon the earth.

Verse 49 (skanda.1.95.49)

इति मां प्राह कामाख्या सर्वं तत्संस्मराम्यहम् ॥ इदं गेहं सानुगं मे दत्तं मयात्मना तव

iti māṁ prāha kāmākhyā sarvaṁ tatsaṁsmarāmyaham || idaṁ gehaṁ sānugaṁ me dattaṁ mayātmanā tava

"Thus did Kamakhya once tell me — I now recall it all. This house, together with my attendants, I myself give to you—

Verse 50 (skanda.1.95.50)

समादिश प्राणनाथ कमादेशं करोमि ते ॥ ॥घटोत्कच उवाच॥ प्रच्छन्नस्तस्य घटते न विवाहः कथंचन

samādiśa prāṇanātha kamādeśaṁ karomi te || ||ghaṭotkaca uvāca|| pracchannastasya ghaṭate na vivāhaḥ kathaṁcana

"—command me, O lord of my life; whatever you order, that I shall do." Ghatotkacha said: "A marriage of this kind can in no way be conducted in secret.

Verse 51 (skanda.1.95.51)

मोर्वि यस्य हि वर्तंते पितरौ बांधवास्तथा ॥ तन्मां शीघ्रं वह शुभे शक्रप्रस्थाय संप्रति

morvi yasya hi vartaṁte pitarau bāṁdhavāstathā || tanmāṁ śīghraṁ vaha śubhe śakraprasthāya saṁprati

"O Maurvi, one who has living parents and kinsmen — for such a one this is not fitting. Therefore, O auspicious one, take me now at once to Shakraprastha.

Verse 52 (skanda.1.95.52)

अयं कुलक्रमोऽस्माकं यद्भार्या पतिमुद्वहेत् ॥ तत्रानुज्ञां समासाद्य परिणेष्यामि त्वामहम्

ayaṁ kulakramo'smākaṁ yadbhāryā patimudvahet || tatrānujñāṁ samāsādya pariṇeṣyāmi tvāmaham

"This is the custom of our family — that only after such consent does a wife wed her husband. Having obtained permission there, I shall then marry you."

Verse 53 (skanda.1.95.53)

भगदत्तमथो नाथं ततो मौर्वी न्यवेदयत् ॥ समादाय बहुद्रव्यं विससर्जाथ भ्रातरम्

bhagadattamatho nāthaṁ tato maurvī nyavedayat || samādāya bahudravyaṁ visasarjātha bhrātaram

Then Maurvi informed her guardian lord Bhagadatta of this; and, taking with her much wealth, took leave of her foster brother.

Verse 54 (skanda.1.95.54)

ततः पृष्ठिं समारोप्य घटोत्कचमनिंदिता ॥ नानाद्रव्यपरीवारा शक्रप्रस्थं समाव्रजत्

tataḥ pṛṣṭhiṁ samāropya ghaṭotkacamaniṁditā || nānādravyaparīvārā śakraprasthaṁ samāvrajat

Then that blameless woman, seating Ghatotkacha upon her back, surrounded by manifold treasures, journeyed to Shakraprastha.

Verse 55 (skanda.1.95.55)

ततोऽसौ वासुदेवेन पांडवैश्चाभिनंदितः ॥ शुभे लग्ने पाणिमस्या जगृहे भीमनंदनः

tato'sau vāsudevena pāṁḍavaiścābhinaṁditaḥ || śubhe lagne pāṇimasyā jagṛhe bhīmanaṁdanaḥ

There she was welcomed by Vasudeva and the Pandavas; and at an auspicious hour Bhima's son took her hand in marriage.

Verse 56 (skanda.1.95.56)

कुरूणां राक्षसानां च प्रोक्तोत्तमविधानतः ॥ उद्वाह्य तां तद्धनैश्च तर्पयामास पांडवान्

kurūṇāṁ rākṣasānāṁ ca proktottamavidhānataḥ || udvāhya tāṁ taddhanaiśca tarpayāmāsa pāṁḍavān

According to the highest rites prescribed both among the Kurus and among the rakshasas, he married her, and with her wealth he gratified the Pandavas.

Verse 57 (skanda.1.95.57)

कुंती च द्रौपदी चोभे मुमुदाते नितांततः ॥ मंगलान्यस्य चक्राते मौर्व्याश्च धन तर्पिते

kuṁtī ca draupadī cobhe mumudāte nitāṁtataḥ || maṁgalānyasya cakrāte maurvyāśca dhana tarpite

Both Kunti and Draupadi rejoiced exceedingly; they performed the auspicious rites for him, and were gratified by Maurvi's wealth.

Verse 58 (skanda.1.95.58)

ततो विवाहे निर्वृत्ते प्रतिपूज्य घटोत्कचम् ॥ भार्यया सहितं राजा स्वराज्याय समादिशत्

tato vivāhe nirvṛtte pratipūjya ghaṭotkacam || bhāryayā sahitaṁ rājā svarājyāya samādiśat

Then, when the wedding was completed, the king, having duly honored Ghatotkacha, bade him depart, together with his wife, to his own kingdom.

Verse 59 (skanda.1.95.59)

मौर्व्याऽऽज्ञां शिरसा गृह्य हैडंबिर्भार्ययान्वितः ॥ शुभं हिडम्बस्य वने स्वराज्यं समुपाव्रजत्

maurvyā''jñāṁ śirasā gṛhya haiḍaṁbirbhāryayānvitaḥ || śubhaṁ hiḍambasya vane svarājyaṁ samupāvrajat

Receiving with bowed head the sanction concerning Maurvi, Hidimba's son, together with his wife, then returned to his own auspicious kingdom in the forest of Hidimba.

Verse 60 (skanda.1.95.60)

ततो राक्षसयोषाभिर्वीरकांस्यैः प्रवर्धितः॥ महोत्सवेन महता स्वराज्ये प्रमुमोद सः

tato rākṣasayoṣābhirvīrakāṁsyaiḥ pravardhitaḥ|| mahotsavena mahatā svarājye pramumoda saḥ

Then, welcomed there by rakshasa women with heroic cymbals, he rejoiced greatly in his own kingdom with a magnificent festival.

Verse 61 (skanda.1.95.61)

ततो वनेषु चित्रेषु निम्नगापुलिनेषु च ॥ रेमे सह तया भैमिर्मंदोदर्येव रावणः

tato vaneṣu citreṣu nimnagāpulineṣu ca || reme saha tayā bhaimirmaṁdodaryeva rāvaṇaḥ

Then, in the many-colored forests and on the sandbanks of rivers, Bhima's grandson sported with her, as Ravana once did with Mandodari.

Verse 62 (skanda.1.95.62)

एवं विक्रीडतस्तस्य गर्भो जज्ञे महाद्युतेः॥ हेडंबै राक्षसव्याघ्राद्बालसूर्यसमप्रभः

evaṁ vikrīḍatastasya garbho jajñe mahādyuteḥ|| heḍaṁbai rākṣasavyāghrādbālasūryasamaprabhaḥ

As he thus sported, a child was conceived by Hidimba, from that tiger among rakshasas, of great splendor, radiant as the youthful sun.

Verse 63 (skanda.1.95.63)

स जातमात्रो ववृधे क्षणाद्यौवनगोऽभवत् ॥ नीलमेघचयप्रख्यो घटास्यो दीर्घलोचनः

sa jātamātro vavṛdhe kṣaṇādyauvanago'bhavat || nīlameghacayaprakhyo ghaṭāsyo dīrghalocanaḥ

The moment he was born he grew instantly and came into youth — dark as a mass of blue clouds, with a face broad like a jar, and with long eyes,

Verse 64 (skanda.1.95.64)

ऊर्ध्वकेशश्चोर्ध्वरोमा पितरौ प्रणतोऽब्रवीत् ॥ प्रणमामि युवां चोभौ जातस्य पितरौ गुरू

ūrdhvakeśaścordhvaromā pitarau praṇato'bravīt || praṇamāmi yuvāṁ cobhau jātasya pitarau gurū

his hair and body-hair standing upright; bowing before his parents, he said: "I bow to you both, my parents, gurus of the one now born.

Verse 65 (skanda.1.95.65)

भवतोर्हि प्रियं कृत्वा अनृणः स्यां सदा ह्यहम् ॥ भवद्भ्यां दत्तमिच्छामि अभिधानं यथात्मनः

bhavatorhi priyaṁ kṛtvā anṛṇaḥ syāṁ sadā hyaham || bhavadbhyāṁ dattamicchāmi abhidhānaṁ yathātmanaḥ

"By ever doing what pleases you both, may I remain forever free of debt to you. I wish to receive from you both a name of my own.

Verse 66 (skanda.1.95.66)

अतः परं तु यच्छ्रेयं कर्तव्यं प्रोन्नतिप्रदम्॥ ततो भेमिस्तमालिंग्य पुत्रं वचनमब्रवीत्

ataḥ paraṁ tu yacchreyaṁ kartavyaṁ pronnatipradam|| tato bhemistamāliṁgya putraṁ vacanamabravīt

"And, further, whatever highest good and elevating duty is to be done, that too instruct me in." Then Bhima's grandson, embracing his son, spoke these words:

Verse 67 (skanda.1.95.67)

बर्बराकारकेशत्वाद्बर्बरीकाभिधो भवान् ॥ भविष्यति महाबाहो कुलस्यानन्दवर्धनः

barbarākārakeśatvādbarbarīkābhidho bhavān || bhaviṣyati mahābāho kulasyānandavardhanaḥ

"Because your hair grows in the curled 'barbara' fashion, you shall be named Barbarika; and, O mighty-armed one, you shall become the increaser of our family's joy.

Verse 68 (skanda.1.95.68)

श्रेयश्च ते यत्परमं दृढं च तत्कीर्त्यते बहुधा विप्र मुख्यैः ॥ प्रक्ष्यावहे तद्यदुवंशनाथं गत्वा पुरीं द्वारकां वासुदेवम्

śreyaśca te yatparamaṁ dṛḍhaṁ ca tatkīrtyate bahudhā vipra mukhyaiḥ || prakṣyāvahe tadyaduvaṁśanāthaṁ gatvā purīṁ dvārakāṁ vāsudevam

"As for that highest and abiding good of yours, which is proclaimed in many ways by the foremost of brahmins — that we shall ask, going to the city of Dvaraka, of Vasudeva, the lord of the Yadu race."
