Maheshvara Khanda · Chapter 99
The Glory of Bhimeshvara
Verse 1 (skanda.1.99.1)
evaṁ tatra sthite tīre devyārādhanatatpare || saptaliṁgārcanarate bhīmanandananandane
Thus, while Barbarika, the son of Bhima's grandson, remained there on that riverbank, devoted to worshipping the Goddess and delighting in the worship of the seven lingas,
Verse 2 (skanda.1.99.2)
tataḥ kālena kenāpi pāṁḍavā dyūtanirjitāḥ || tatrājagmuśca kramatastīrthasnānakṛte bhuvam
then, after some time, the Pandavas, defeated at dice, came in due course to that land, for the sake of bathing at the sacred fords.
Verse 3 (skanda.1.99.3)
prāgeva caṁḍikāṁ devīṁ kṣetrādīśānataḥ sthitām || āsedurmārgakhinnāste draupadīpaṁcamāstadā
Weary from their journey, they, the five together with Draupadi, first of all approached the Goddess Chandika, who stood to the northeast of the sacred field.
Verse 4 (skanda.1.99.4)
tatraiva copaviṣṭo'bhūttadānīṁ caṁḍikāgaṇaḥ || barbarīkaśca tānvīrānsamāyātānapaśyata
There, at that very time, the attendant of Chandika was seated; and Barbarika saw those heroes arriving.
Verse 5 (skanda.1.99.5)
paraṁ nāsau veda pāṇḍūnpāṇḍavāstaṁ ca no viduḥ || ājanma yasmānnaivābhūtpāṇḍūnāṁ cāsya saṁgamaḥ
But he did not know the Pandavas, nor did the Pandavas know him — for from his very birth he had never once met with the sons of Pandu.
Verse 6 (skanda.1.99.6)
tataḥ praviśya vai tasmindevīmāsādya pāṁḍavāḥ || piṁḍakādyaṁ tatra muktvā tṛṣā praikṣi jalaṁ tadā
Then the Pandavas, entering there and approaching the Goddess, having offered rice-balls and the like, then, overcome with thirst, looked upon the water.
Verse 7 (skanda.1.99.7)
tato bhīmaḥ kuṇḍamadhyaṁ jalaṁ pātuṁ viveśa ha || praviśaṁtaṁ ca taṁ prāha yudhiṣṭhira idaṁ vacaḥ
Then Bhima went into the middle of the sacred pool to drink the water; and, as he was entering, Yudhishthira spoke this word to him:
Verse 8 (skanda.1.99.8)
uddhṛtya bhīma toyaṁ tvaṁ pādau prakṣālya bho bahiḥ || tataḥ pibā'nyathā doṣo mahāṁstvāmupapatsyate
"O Bhima, first draw out the water, wash your feet outside, and only then drink; otherwise a great fault shall befall you."
Verse 9 (skanda.1.99.9)
etadrājño vaco bhīmastṛṣā vyākulalocanaḥ || aśrutvaiva viveśāsau kuṇḍamadhye jalecchayā
But Bhima, his eyes wild with thirst, without even hearing this word of the king, entered into the middle of the pool, driven by his desire for water.
Verse 10 (skanda.1.99.10)
sa ca dṛṣṭvā jalaṁ pātuṁ tatraiva kṛtaniścayaḥ || mukhaṁ hastau ca caraṇau kṣālayāmāsa śuddhaye
Seeing the water, resolved right there to drink it, he washed his face, hands, and feet for purification.
Verse 11 (skanda.1.99.11)
yataḥ pītaṁ jalaṁ puṁsāmaprakṣālya ca yadbhavet || pretāḥ piśācāstadrūpaṁ saṁkramya prapibaṁti tat
For whatever water a man drinks without such washing — ghosts and pishachas, taking on that very form left by his impurity, come and drink it in his place.
Verse 12 (skanda.1.99.12)
evaṁ prakṣālayāne ca pādau tatra vṛkodare || uparisthastadā prāha satyaṁ suhṛdayo vacaḥ
While Vrikodara was thus washing his feet there, Suhrdaya, standing above nearby, then spoke this truthful word:
Verse 13 (skanda.1.99.13)
durmate bhoḥ kimetattvaṁ kuruṣe pāpaniścayaḥ || devīkuṇḍe kṣālayasi mukhaṁ pādau karau ca yat
"O evil-minded one, what is this you are doing, resolved on sin — that you wash your face, feet, and hands in the Goddess's own pool?
Verse 14 (skanda.1.99.14)
yato devī sadānena jalena snāpyate mayā || datra prakṣipaṁstoyaṁ malapāpānna bibhyasi
"For with this very water the Goddess is always bathed by me — yet, casting your washing-water into it, you show no fear of that impurity and sin!
Verse 15 (skanda.1.99.15)
malāktatoyaṁ yannāma aspṛśyaṁ tannarairapi || kuto devaiśca tatpāpaṁ spṛśyate tattvato vada
"Water tainted with such impurity is untouchable even for ordinary men — how then could gods touch it? Tell me truly, is this not sinful?
Verse 16 (skanda.1.99.16)
śīghraṁ ca tvaṁ niḥsarāsmātkuṇḍādbhūtvā bahiḥ piba || yadyevaṁ pāpa mūḍho'si tīrtheṣu bhramase kutaḥ
"Get out of this pool at once, and drink outside it. If you are so foolish and sinful as this, why do you even wander among the sacred tirthas?"
Verse 17 (skanda.1.99.17)
||bhīma uvāca|| kimetadbhāṣase krūra paruṣaṁ rākṣasādhama || yatastoyāni jaṁtūnāmupabho gārthameva hi
Bhima said: "What is this harsh thing you say, O cruel, base rakshasa? Waters exist, after all, precisely for the use of living beings.
Verse 18 (skanda.1.99.18)
tīrtheṣu kāryaṁ snānaṁ cetyuktaṁ munivarairapi || aṁgaprakṣālanaṁ snānamuktaṁ māṁ niṁdase kutaḥ
"That bathing is to be done in sacred tirthas — this too has been declared by the best of sages. The washing of the limbs is itself called bathing — why then do you rebuke me?"
Verse 19 (skanda.1.99.19)
yadi na kriyate pānamaṁgaprakṣālanaṁ tathā || tatkimarthaṁ pūrtadharmāḥ kriyante dharmaśālibhiḥ
"If drinking and the washing of one's limbs were not to be done at such places, then for what purpose do the pious perform such public works of merit?"
Verse 20 (skanda.1.99.20)
||suhṛdaya uvāca|| snātavyaṁ tīrthamukhyeṣu satyametanna saṁśayaḥ || careṣu kiṁ tu saṁviśya sthāvareṣu bahiḥ sthitaḥ
Suhrdaya said: "That one should bathe at the great tirthas is true, without doubt; but this applies to flowing waters, entered directly — whereas for still waters, one must remain outside them.
Verse 21 (skanda.1.99.21)
sthāvareṣvapi saṁviśya tanna snānaṁ vidhīyate || na yatra devasnānārthaṁ bhaktaiḥ saṁgṛhyate jalam
"Even for still waters, entering them and bathing within is not prescribed — except where the water is not gathered by devotees for the purpose of bathing the deity.
Verse 22 (skanda.1.99.22)
yacca hastaśatādūrdhvaṁ sarastatra vidhīyate || saṁveśe'pi kramaścāyaṁ pādau prakṣālya yadbahiḥ
"And where a pool extends beyond a hundred hands in size, entering it is also prescribed there — but the proper order, even for entering, is to first wash the feet outside it,
Verse 23 (skanda.1.99.23)
tataḥ snānaṁ prakartavyamanyathā doṣa ucyate || kiṁ na śrutastvayā proktaḥ ślokaḥ padmabhuvā purā
"and only then to bathe — otherwise a fault is incurred. Have you not heard the verse once spoken by the Lotus-born one himself?
Verse 24 (skanda.1.99.24)
malaṁ mūtraṁ purīṣaṁ ca śleṣma niṣṭhīnāśru ca || gaṁḍūṣāścaiva muñcati ye te brahmahaṇaiḥ samāḥ
"'Those who release into it their dirt, urine, excrement, phlegm, spittle, tears, or the water rinsed from their mouth — they are equal to the slayers of a brahmin.'
Verse 25 (skanda.1.99.25)
tasmānniḥsara śīghraṁ tvaṁ yadyevamajitendriyaḥ || tatkimarthaṁ durācāra tīrtheṣvaṭasi bāliśa
"Therefore get out at once. If you are so unrestrained in your senses, then why, O ill-behaved and foolish one, do you wander among the tirthas at all?"
Verse 26 (skanda.1.99.26)
yasya hastau ca pādau ca manaścaiva susaṁyatam|| nirvikārāḥ kriyāḥ sarvāḥ sa hi tīrthaphalaṁ labhet
"He alone obtains the fruit of the tirtha whose hands, feet, and mind are all well-restrained, and whose every act is free of disturbance."
Verse 27 (skanda.1.99.27)
||bhīma uvāca|| adharmo vāpi dharmo'stu nirgaṁtuṁ naiva śaknuyām || kṣudhā tṛṣā mayā nityaṁ vārituṁ naiva śakyate
Bhima said: "Whether it be sin or virtue, I simply cannot bring myself to leave. Hunger and thirst can never be restrained by me at all."
Verse 28 (skanda.1.99.28)
||suhṛdaya uvāca|| jīvitārthe bhavānkasmātpāpaṁ prakurute vada || kiṁ na śrutastvayā ślokaḥ śibinā yaḥ samīritaḥ
Suhrdaya said: "Why, tell me, do you commit sin for the sake of mere life? Have you not heard the verse once uttered by King Shibi?
Verse 29 (skanda.1.99.29)
muhūrtamapi jīveta naraḥ śuklena karmaṇā || na kalpamapi jīveta lokadvayavirodhinā
"'Better that a man live but a single moment through pure conduct, than live even for an entire aeon through conduct that opposes both this world and the next.'"
Verse 30 (skanda.1.99.30)
||bhīma uvāca|| kākāraveṇa te mahyaṁ karṇau badhiratāṁ gatau || pāsyāmyeva jalaṁ cātra kāmaṁ vilapa śuṣya vā
Bhima said: "My ears have gone deaf from your crow-like cawing! I shall drink this water regardless — wail as you please, or dry up for all I care."
Verse 31 (skanda.1.99.31)
||suhṛdaya uvāca|| kṣatriyāṇāṁ kule jātastvahaṁ dharmābhirakṣiṇām || tasmātte pātakaṁ kartuṁ na dāsyāmi kathaṁcana
Suhrdaya said: "I was born in a line of kshatriyas, protectors of dharma. Therefore I shall by no means allow you to commit this sin.
Verse 32 (skanda.1.99.32)
tadvarākātha śīghraṁ tvamasmātkuṁḍādviniḥsara
"Therefore, wretch, get out of this pool at once—
Verse 33 (skanda.1.99.33)
iṣṭakāśakalaiḥ śīghraṁ cūrṇayiṣye'nyathā śiraḥ || ityuktvā ceṣṭakāṁ gṛhya mumoca śirasaḥ prati
"—or else I shall shatter your head at once with pieces of brick!" Having said this, seizing a brick, he hurled it at his head.
Verse 34 (skanda.1.99.34)
bhīmaśca vaṁcayitvā tāmutplutya bahirāvrajat || bhartsayaṁtau tataścobhāvanyonyaṁ bhīmavikramau
Bhima, dodging it, leapt up and came out; and then the two of them, both terrible in valor, began to hurl abuses at one another.
Verse 35 (skanda.1.99.35)
yuyudhāte pralaṁbābhyāṁ bāhubhyāṁ yuddhapāragau || vyūḍhoraskau dīrghabhujau niyuddhakuśalāvubhau
They fought with their long arms, both masters of combat, both broad-chested, long-armed, and skilled in wrestling.
Verse 36 (skanda.1.99.36)
muṣṭibhiḥ pārṣṇighātaiśca jānubhiścābhijaghnatuḥ || tato muhūrtātkauravyaḥ paryahīyata pāṁḍavaḥ
They struck each other with fists, heel-blows, and knees; and then, within a moment, the Pandava, that son of the Kuru line, began to weaken.
Verse 37 (skanda.1.99.37)
hīyamānastato bhīma udyato'bhūtpunaḥ punaḥ || ahīyata tato'pyaṁga vavṛdhe barbarīkakaḥ
As Bhima weakened, he strove again and again with renewed effort; but even so he kept weakening, and Barbarika, meanwhile, grew ever stronger.
Verse 38 (skanda.1.99.38)
tato bhīmaṁ samutpāṭya barbarīko balādiva || niṣpipeṣa tataḥ kruddhastadadbhutamivābhavat
Then Barbarika, lifting Bhima up by force, crushed him in his enraged grip — and this became a most wondrous sight.
Verse 39 (skanda.1.99.39)
mūrchitaṁ caivamādāya visphurantaṁ punaḥpunaḥ || sāgarāya pracalitaḥ kṣeptuṁ tatra mahāṁbhasi
Taking him up thus, unconscious, though he still twitched and struggled again and again, he set off toward the sea, meaning to cast him into that great expanse of water.
Verse 40 (skanda.1.99.40)
dadṛśuḥ pāṁḍavā naitaddevyā nayanayaṁtritāḥ
The other Pandavas did not see this at all, their eyes being held bound by the power of the Goddess.
Verse 41 (skanda.1.99.41)
tathā gṛhīte kuruvīramukhye vīreṇa tenādbhutavikrameṇa || āścaryamāsīddivi devatānāṁ devībhirākāśatale nirīkṣya tam
When the foremost hero of the Kurus had thus been seized by that hero of wondrous valor, great astonishment arose among the gods in heaven, as they, together with the Goddesses, watched him from the vault of the sky.
Verse 42 (skanda.1.99.42)
sāgarasya tatastīre barbarīkaṁ gataṁ tadā || nirīkṣya bhagavānrudro viyatsthaḥ samabhāṣata
Then, seeing Barbarika arrived at the shore of the sea, the Blessed Rudra, stationed in the sky, spoke to him:
Verse 43 (skanda.1.99.43)
bhobho rākṣasaśārdūla barbarīka mahābala || muṁcainaṁ bharataśreṣṭhaṁ bhīmaṁ tava pitāmaham
"O tiger among rakshasas, mighty Barbarika! Release him — this best of the Bharatas, Bhima, who is your own grandfather!
Verse 44 (skanda.1.99.44)
ayaṁ hi tīrthayātrāyāṁ vicaranbhrātṛbhiryutaḥ || kṛṣṇayā cāpyadastīrthaṁ snātumevābhyupāyayau
"He, wandering on a tirtha-pilgrimage together with his brothers and with Krishna, has come here today only to bathe at this sacred ford.
Verse 45 (skanda.1.99.45)
sammānaṁ sarvathā tasmādarhaḥ kauravanaṁdanaḥ || apāpo vā sapāpo vā pūjya eva pitāmahaḥ
"For this reason he, the delight of the Kaurava line, deserves in every way to be honored. Whether without fault or with fault, a grandfather is ever worthy of worship."
Verse 46 (skanda.1.99.46)
||sūta uvāca|| iti rudravacaḥ śrutvā sahasā taṁ vimucya saḥ || nyapatatpādayorhā dhikkaṣṭaṁ kaṣṭaṁ ca prāha saḥ
Suta said: Hearing these words of Rudra, he at once released him, and fell at his feet, crying, "Alas! Shame on me! How grievous, how grievous!" he cried,
Verse 47 (skanda.1.99.47)
kṣamyatāṁ kṣamyatāṁ ceti punaḥ punaravocata || śiraśca tāḍayansvīyaṁ ruroda ca muhurmuhuḥ
saying again and again, "Forgive me, forgive me!" and, beating his own head, he wept over and over.
Verse 48 (skanda.1.99.48)
taṁ tathā pariśocaṁtaṁ muhyamānaṁ muhurmuhuḥ || bhīmasenaḥ samāliṁgya āghrāya ca vaco'bravīt
Seeing him thus grieving, again and again losing his senses, Bhimasena embraced him, kissed his head, and spoke these words:
Verse 49 (skanda.1.99.49)
vayaṁ tvāṁ naiva jānīmastvaṁ cāsmāñjanmakālataḥ || atra vāsaśca te putra bhaimeḥ kṛṣṇācca saṁśrutaḥ
"We never knew you, nor have you known us, from the time of your birth. Yet, my son, your dwelling here, born of Bhima's grandson and heard of through Krishna—
Verse 50 (skanda.1.99.50)
paraṁ no vismṛtaṁ sarvaṁ nānāduḥkhaiḥ pramuhyatām || duḥkhitānāṁ yataḥ sarvā smṛtirluptā bhavetsphuṭam
"—all of this we had entirely forgotten, bewildered as we were by manifold sorrows; for the memory of those in sorrow is truly always lost.
Verse 51 (skanda.1.99.51)
"This misfortune of ours, then, came about entirely through the ordinance of time. Do not grieve, my child — there is not the slightest fault in you.
Verse 52 (skanda.1.99.52)
yataḥ sarvaḥ kṣatriyasya daṁḍyo vipathisaṁsthi taḥ || ātmāpidaṁḍyaḥ sādhūnāṁ pravṛttaḥ kupathādyadi
"For it is proper for a kshatriya to punish anyone found upon a wrong path — even, for the virtuous, oneself, should one turn toward a wicked course.
Verse 53 (skanda.1.99.53)
pitṛmātṛsuhṛdbhrātṛputrādīnāṁ kimucyate || atīva mama harṣo'yaṁ dhanyohaṁ pūrvajāśca me
"What need to speak of father, mother, friends, brothers, sons, and the rest? This is a matter of the greatest joy to me — blessed am I, and blessed are my ancestors,
Verse 54 (skanda.1.99.54)
yasya tvīdṛśakaḥ pautro dharmajño dharmapālakaḥ || varārhastvaṁ praśaṁsārho bhavānyeṣāṁ satāṁ tathā
"in having a grandson such as you, knower and upholder of dharma. You are worthy of the highest boon, worthy of praise, as are all such virtuous ones.
Verse 55 (skanda.1.99.55)
tasmācchokaṁ vihāyemaṁ svastho bhavi tumarhasi
"Therefore, setting aside this grief, you ought now to become calm again."
Verse 56 (skanda.1.99.56)
barbarīka uvāca || pāpaṁ māṁ tātatāta tvaṁ brahmaghnādapi kutsitam || apraśasyaṁ nārhasīha draṣṭuṁ spraṣṭumapi prabho
Barbarika said: "O father of my father! You should not, O Lord, even look upon me or touch me — sinful as I am, more despicable and unworthy even than the slayer of a brahmin."
Verse 57 (skanda.1.99.57)
sarveṣāmeva pāpānāṁ niṣkṛtiḥ procyate budhaiḥ || pitrorabhaktasya punarniṣkṛtirnaiva vidyate
"For every sin whatsoever, the wise declare there is an atonement — but for one who lacks devotion to his parents, there is indeed no atonement at all.
Verse 58 (skanda.1.99.58)

"—for whoever obstructs an act of atonement thereby loses a portion of merit himself." Having said this, the mighty one leapt up and made for the ocean.
Verse 61 (skanda.1.99.61)
samudro'pi cakaṁpe ca kathamenaṁ nihanmyaham || tataḥ siddhāṁbikāyāśca devyastatra caturdaśa
Even the ocean trembled, thinking, "How am I to destroy him?" Then the fourteen Goddesses of Siddhambika,
Verse 62 (skanda.1.99.62)
samāliṁgya ca saṁsthāpya rudreṇa sahitā jaguḥ || ajñātavihite pāpe nāsti vīreṁdra kalmaṣam
together with Rudra, embraced him and made him stand still, and said: "O lord of heroes, there is no stain of sin in a wrong committed unknowingly.
Verse 63 (skanda.1.99.63)
śāstreṣūktamidaṁ vākyaṁ nānyathā kartumarhasi || amuṁ ca pṛṣṭhalagnaṁ tvaṁ paśya bhoḥ svaṁ pitāmaham
"This is a statement declared in the scriptures — you should not act otherwise. Look, here, at your own grandfather, clinging close behind you—
Verse 64 (skanda.1.99.64)
putraputreti bhāṣaṁtamanu tvā maraṇonmukham || adhunā cetsvakaṁ dehaṁ vīra tvaṁ parityakṣyasi
"—calling out 'My son! My son!' as he follows you toward death. O hero, if you now abandon your own body,
Verse 65 (skanda.1.99.65)
tatastyakṣyati bhīmo'pi pātakaṁ tanmahattava || evaṁ jñātvā dhāraya tvaṁ svaśarīraṁ mahāmate
"then Bhima too will thereby abandon his life on account of your great sin. Knowing this, O great-minded one, preserve your own body.
Verse 66 (skanda.1.99.66)
atha cettyaktukāmastvaṁ tatrāpi vacanaṁ śṛṇu || svalpenaiva ca kālena kṛṣṇāddevakinaṁdanāt
"But if still you wish to give it up, hear this word too on that matter: within a very short time, at the hand of Krishna, the son of Devaki—
Verse 67 (skanda.1.99.67)
dehapātastava proktastaṁ pratīkṣa yadīccha si || yato viṣṇukarādvatsa dehapāto viśiṣyate
"—your body's fall has been foretold; if you truly wish it, wait for that time. For, my child, to fall by the hand of Vishnu himself is a far more distinguished end.
Verse 68 (skanda.1.99.68)
tasmātpratīkṣa taṁ kālamasmākaṁ prārthitena ca || evamukto nivavṛte barbarīko'pi durmanāḥ
"Therefore, at our request, wait for that time." Thus addressed, Barbarika, though still troubled in mind, turned back;
Verse 69 (skanda.1.99.69)
rudraṁ devīśca cāmuṁḍāṁ sopālaṁbhaṁ vaco'bravīt || tvameva devi jānāsi rakṣyate śārṅgadhanvinā
and he spoke a word of reproach to Rudra, to the Goddesses, and to Chamunda: "You yourself, O Goddess, know that Krishna is protected by the wielder of the Sharnga bow —
Verse 70 (skanda.1.99.70)
pāṁḍavā bhūmilābhārthe tatte kasmādupekṣitam || tvayā ca samupāgatya rakṣito'yaṁ vṛkodaraḥ
"—yet why, for the sake of the Pandavas' regaining their land, did you neglect them thus? You yourself should have come and protected this Vrikodara."
Verse 71 (skanda.1.99.71)
||devyuvāca|| ahaṁ ca rakṣayiṣyāmi svabhaktaṁ kṛṣṇamṛtyutaḥ || yasmācca caṁḍikākṛtye kṛto'nena mahāraṇaḥ || tasmāccaṁḍilanāmnāyaṁ viśvapūjyo bhaviṣyati
The Goddess said: "I myself shall protect my own devotee, Krishna, from death. And since this great battle was waged by him in the very cause of Chandika, he shall henceforth be worshipped by the whole world under the name Chandila."
Verse 72 (skanda.1.99.72)
evamuktvā gatāḥ sarve devā devyastvadṛśyatām || bhīmo'pi taṁ samādāya pāṁḍubhyaḥ sarvamūcivān
Having said this, all the gods departed, and the Goddesses vanished from sight. Bhima too, taking him along, told the whole matter to the sons of Pandu.
Verse 73 (skanda.1.99.73)
vismitāḥ pāṁḍavāstaṁ ca pūjayitvā punaḥ punaḥ || yathoktavidhinā cakrustīrthasnānamataṁdritāḥ
The Pandavas, astonished, worshipped him again and again, and then, without further delay, performed their bathing at the tirtha according to the prescribed rite.
Verse 74 (skanda.1.99.74)
bhīmopi yatra rudreṇa mokṣitastatra suprabham || liṁgaṁ saṁsthāpayāmāsa bhīmeśvaramiti śrutam
And at the very place where Bhima had been released by Rudra, Barbarika established a most splendid linga, known as Bhimeshvara.
Verse 75 (skanda.1.99.75)
jyeṣṭhamāse kṛṣṇapakṣe caturdaśyāmupoṣitaḥ || rātrau saṁpūjya bhīmeśaṁ janmapāpādvimucyate
Whoever fasts on the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight of the month of Jyeshtha, and worships Bhimesha that night, is freed from the sins of his birth.
Verse 76 (skanda.1.99.76)
yathaiva liṁgāni supūjitāni saptātra mukhyāni mahāphalāni || bhīmeśvaraṁ liṁgamidaṁ tathaiva samastapāpāpaharaṁ supūjyam
Just as the seven principal lingas here, when well worshipped, bear great fruit, so too this linga of Bhimeshvara, the remover of all sins, is most worthy of worship.
