Narada's Vision of Yajna-Varaha on Mount Sumeru

Verse 1 (skanda.2.1.1)

पावने नैमिषारण्ये शौनकाद्या महर्षयः। चक्रिरे लोकरक्षार्थं सत्रं द्वादशवार्षिकम्

pāvane naimiṣāraṇye śaunakādyā maharṣayaḥ| cakrire lokarakṣārthaṁ satraṁ dvādaśavārṣikam

In the sacred Naimisha forest, the great sages headed by Shaunaka undertook a twelve-year sacrificial session for the protection of the world.

Verse 2 (skanda.2.1.2)

तानभ्यगच्छत्कथको व्यासशिष्यो महामतिः। मुनिरुग्रश्रवा नाम रोमहर्षणसम्भवः

tānabhyagacchatkathako vyāsaśiṣyo mahāmatiḥ| munirugraśravā nāma romaharṣaṇasambhavaḥ

To them came the great-minded narrator, disciple of Vyasa, the sage named Ugrashrava, born of Romaharshana.

Verse 3 (skanda.2.1.3)

सम्यगभ्यर्चितस्त्वेषां सूतः पौराणिकोत्तमः। कथयामास तद्दिव्यं पुराणं स्कन्दनामकम्

samyagabhyarcitastveṣāṁ sūtaḥ paurāṇikottamaḥ| kathayāmāsa taddivyaṁ purāṇaṁ skandanāmakam

Duly honored by them, Suta, foremost among reciters of the Puranas, narrated that divine Purana named Skanda.

Verse 4 (skanda.2.1.4)

सृष्टिसंहारवंशानां वंशानुचरितस्य च। कथां मन्वन्तराणां च विस्तरात्स न्यवेदयत्

sṛṣṭisaṁhāravaṁśānāṁ vaṁśānucaritasya ca| kathāṁ manvantarāṇāṁ ca vistarātsa nyavedayat

He related in full detail the account of creation and dissolution, the histories of the royal lineages, and the tale of the Manvantaras.

Verse 5 (skanda.2.1.5)

कथास्तीर्थप्रभावाणां श्रुत्वा ते मुनिपुङ्गवाः। ऊचिरे वशिनं सूतं कथाश्रवणकाङ्क्षया

kathāstīrthaprabhāvāṇāṁ śrutvā te munipuṅgavāḥ| ūcire vaśinaṁ sūtaṁ kathāśravaṇakāṅkṣayā

Having heard the accounts of the power of the sacred fords, those foremost of sages, eager to hear more, addressed the self-controlled Suta.

Verse 6 (skanda.2.1.6)

ऋषय ऊचुः। रोमहर्षण सर्वज्ञ पुराणार्थविशारद। माहात्म्यं श्रोतुमिच्छामो गिरीन्द्राणां महीतले। ब्रूहि त्वं नो महाभाग के प्रधाना महीधराः

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ| romaharṣaṇa sarvajña purāṇārthaviśārada| māhātmyaṁ śrotumicchāmo girīndrāṇāṁ mahītale| brūhi tvaṁ no mahābhāga ke pradhānā mahīdharāḥ

The sages said: O Romaharshana, all-knowing one, skilled in the meaning of the Puranas, we wish to hear the glory of the great mountains upon the earth. Tell us, O blessed one, which are the foremost of the mountains.

Verse 7 (skanda.2.1.7)

श्रीसूत उवाच। एतमेव पुरा प्रश्नमपृच्छं जाह्नवीतटे। व्यासं मुनिवरश्रेष्ठं सोऽब्रवीन्मे गुरूत्तमः

śrīsūta uvāca| etameva purā praśnamapṛcchaṁ jāhnavītaṭe| vyāsaṁ munivaraśreṣṭhaṁ so'bravīnme gurūttamaḥ

Sri Suta said: This very question I once asked, on the bank of the Ganga, of Vyasa, best among sages; and thus spoke to me my supreme guru.

Verse 8 (skanda.2.1.8)

व्यास उवाच। पुरा देवयुगे सूत नारदो मुनिसत्तमः। सुमेरुशिखरं गत्वा नानारत्नसुशोभिनम्

vyāsa uvāca| purā devayuge sūta nārado munisattamaḥ| sumeruśikharaṁ gatvā nānāratnasuśobhinam

Vyasa said: Formerly, in the age of the gods, O Suta, Narada, best of sages, went to the peak of Sumeru, beautifully adorned with many jewels.

Verse 9 (skanda.2.1.9)

तन्मध्ये विपुलं दीप्तं ब्रह्मणो दिव्यमालयम्। दृष्ट्वा तस्योत्तरे देशे पिप्पलद्रुममुत्तमम्

tanmadhye vipulaṁ dīptaṁ brahmaṇo divyamālayam| dṛṣṭvā tasyottare deśe pippaladrumamuttamam

There he saw the vast, radiant, divine abode of Brahma, and to its north, an excellent pipal tree.

Verse 10 (skanda.2.1.10)

सहस्रयोजनोच्छ्रायं विस्तीर्णं द्विगुणं तथा। तन्मूले मण्डपं दिव्यं नानारत्नसमन्वितम्

sahasrayojanocchrāyaṁ vistīrṇaṁ dviguṇaṁ tathā| tanmūle maṇḍapaṁ divyaṁ nānāratnasamanvitam

That tree was a thousand yojanas in height, and twice that in breadth; at its root stood a divine pavilion adorned with many jewels.

Verse 11 (skanda.2.1.11)

पद्मरागमणिस्तम्भैः सहस्रैः समलंकृतम्। वैडूर्यमुक्तामणिभिः कृतस्वस्तिकमालिकम्

padmarāgamaṇistambhaiḥ sahasraiḥ samalaṁkṛtam| vaiḍūryamuktāmaṇibhiḥ kṛtasvastikamālikam

It was adorned with a thousand pillars of ruby, its garlands wrought in svastika-patterns of cat's-eye gem and pearl.

Verse 12 (skanda.2.1.12)

नवरत्नसमाकीर्णं दिव्यतोरणशोभितम्। मृगपक्षिभिराकीर्णं नवरत्नमयैः शुभैः

navaratnasamākīrṇaṁ divyatoraṇaśobhitam| mṛgapakṣibhirākīrṇaṁ navaratnamayaiḥ śubhaiḥ

It was filled with the nine gems, beautified with divine archways, and thronged with deer and birds, all auspicious and wrought of the nine gems.

Verse 13 (skanda.2.1.13)

पुष्परागमहाद्वारं सप्तभूमिकगोपुरम्। सन्दीप्तवज्रसुकृतकवाटद्वयशोभितम्

puṣparāgamahādvāraṁ saptabhūmikagopuram| sandīptavajrasukṛtakavāṭadvayaśobhitam

Its great gate was of topaz, its tower seven storeys high, beautified by a pair of doors well-wrought and blazing with diamonds.

Verse 14 (skanda.2.1.14)

प्रविश्याऽसौ ददर्शान्तर्दिव्यमौक्तिकमण्डपम्। वैडूर्यवेदिकं तुङ्गमारुरोह महामुनिः

praviśyā'sau dadarśāntardivyamauktikamaṇḍapam| vaiḍūryavedikaṁ tuṅgamāruroha mahāmuniḥ

Entering within, he saw a divine pavilion made of pearls, and the great sage ascended the lofty platform of cat's-eye gem.

Verse 15 (skanda.2.1.15)

तन्मध्ये तुङ्गमतुलं वसुपादविराजितम्। ददर्श मुक्तासङ्कीर्णं सिंहासनं महाद्युति

tanmadhye tuṅgamatulaṁ vasupādavirājitam| dadarśa muktāsaṅkīrṇaṁ siṁhāsanaṁ mahādyuti

In its midst he saw a lofty, matchless, radiant lion-throne resting on eight feet and studded with pearls.

Verse 16 (skanda.2.1.16)

तन्मध्ये पुष्करं दिव्यं सहस्रदलशोभितम्। श्वेतं चन्द्रसहस्राभं कर्णिकाकेसरोज्ज्वलम्

tanmadhye puṣkaraṁ divyaṁ sahasradalaśobhitam| śvetaṁ candrasahasrābhaṁ karṇikākesarojjvalam

In its centre was a divine lotus of a thousand petals, white, radiant as a thousand moons, brilliant with its filaments and pericarp.

Verse 17 (skanda.2.1.17)

तस्य मध्ये समासीनं पूर्णचन्द्रायुतप्रभम्। कैलासपर्वताकारं सुन्दरं पुरुषाकृतिम्

tasya madhye samāsīnaṁ pūrṇacandrāyutaprabham| kailāsaparvatākāraṁ sundaraṁ puruṣākṛtim

Seated in its midst was one radiant as ten thousand full moons, shaped like Mount Kailasa, beautiful, in the form of the Supreme Person.

Verse 18 (skanda.2.1.18)

चतुर्बाहुमुदारांगं वराहवदनं शुभम्। शंखचक्राभयवरान्बिभ्राणं पुरुषोत्तमम्

caturbāhumudārāṁgaṁ varāhavadanaṁ śubham| śaṁkhacakrābhayavarānbibhrāṇaṁ puruṣottamam

Four-armed, of noble form, with the auspicious face of a boar, that Supreme Person bore the conch, discus, and the gestures of protection and boon-giving.

Verse 19 (skanda.2.1.19)

पीताम्बरधरं देवं पुंडरीकायतेक्षणम्। पूर्णेंदुसौम्यवदनं धूपगंधिमुखांबुजम्

pītāmbaradharaṁ devaṁ puṁḍarīkāyatekṣaṇam| pūrṇeṁdusaumyavadanaṁ dhūpagaṁdhimukhāṁbujam

He wore yellow garments, his eyes long as lotus-petals, his face gentle as the full moon, his lotus-mouth fragrant with incense.

Verse 20 (skanda.2.1.20)

सामध्वनिं यज्ञमूर्तिं स्रुक्तुण्डं स्रुवनासिकम्। क्षीरसागरसंकाशं किरीटोज्ज्वलिताननम्

sāmadhvaniṁ yajñamūrtiṁ sruktuṇḍaṁ sruvanāsikam| kṣīrasāgarasaṁkāśaṁ kirīṭojjvalitānanam

His voice resounded with the Sama chant, his form was the very embodiment of sacrifice, his snout like the sacrificial ladle and his nose like the sacred spoon; he shone like the Ocean of Milk, his face radiant with a crown.

Verse 21 (skanda.2.1.21)

श्रीवत्सवक्षसं शुभ्रयज्ञसूत्रविराजितम्। कौस्तुभश्रीसमुद्द्योतं समुन्नतमहोरसम्

śrīvatsavakṣasaṁ śubhrayajñasūtravirājitam| kaustubhaśrīsamuddyotaṁ samunnatamahorasam

The mark of Shrivatsa was on his chest; he was adorned with the bright sacred thread, blazing with the splendour of the Kaustubha gem, his broad chest raised high.

Verse 22 (skanda.2.1.22)

जांबूनदमयैर्दिव्यैः सुरत्नाभरणैर्युतम्। विद्युन्मालापरिक्षिप्तशरन्मेघमिवोज्ज्वलम्

jāṁbūnadamayairdivyaiḥ suratnābharaṇairyutam| vidyunmālāparikṣiptaśaranmeghamivojjvalam

He was adorned with many divine ornaments set with excellent gems, shining like an autumn cloud wreathed in a garland of lightning.

Verse 23 (skanda.2.1.23)

वामपादतलाक्रांतपादपीठविराजितम्। कटकांगदकेयूरकुण्डलोज्ज्वलितं सदा

vāmapādatalākrāṁtapādapīṭhavirājitam| kaṭakāṁgadakeyūrakuṇḍalojjvalitaṁ sadā

His left foot rested upon a splendid footstool; he ever shone with bracelets, armlets, and earrings.

Verse 24 (skanda.2.1.24)

चतुर्मुखवसिष्ठात्रिमार्कण्डेयैर्मुनीश्वरैः। भृग्वादिभिरनेकैश्च सेव्यमानमहर्निशम्

caturmukhavasiṣṭhātrimārkaṇḍeyairmunīśvaraiḥ| bhṛgvādibhiranekaiśca sevyamānamaharniśam

He was served day and night by four-faced Brahma, by Vasishtha, Atri, and Markandeya, and by many great sages headed by Bhrigu.

Verse 25 (skanda.2.1.25)

इन्द्रादिलोकपालैश्च गन्धर्वाप्सरसां गणैः। सेवितं देवदेवेशं प्रणिपत्याभिगम्य च

indrādilokapālaiśca gandharvāpsarasāṁ gaṇaiḥ| sevitaṁ devadeveśaṁ praṇipatyābhigamya ca

He was served by Indra and the other guardians of the quarters, and by hosts of Gandharvas and Apsarases; and, bowing down, Narada approached that Lord of Lords.

Verse 26 (skanda.2.1.26)

दिव्यैरुपनिषद्भागैरभिष्टूय धराधरम्। नारदः परमप्रीतः स्थितो देवस्य सन्निधौ

divyairupaniṣadbhāgairabhiṣṭūya dharādharam| nāradaḥ paramaprītaḥ sthito devasya sannidhau

Having praised the Bearer of the Earth with divine hymns of the Upanishads, Narada, greatly delighted, stood in the presence of the Lord.

Verse 27 (skanda.2.1.27)

एतस्मिन्नंतरे चाभूद्दिव्यदुन्दुभिनिःस्वनः

etasminnaṁtare cābhūddivyadundubhiniḥsvanaḥ

At that very moment there arose the sound of a divine drum.

Verse 28 (skanda.2.1.28)

ततस्तमागता देवी धरणी सखिसंयुता। सुरत्नसागराकारदिव्यांबरसमुज्ज्वला

tatastamāgatā devī dharaṇī sakhisaṁyutā| suratnasāgarākāradivyāṁbarasamujjvalā

Then the goddess Dharani, the Earth, came there, accompanied by her companions, radiant in divine garments the colour of the jewelled ocean.

Verse 29 (skanda.2.1.29)

सुमेरुमन्दराकारस्तनभारावनामिता। नवदूर्वादलश्यामा सर्वाभरणभूषिता

sumerumandarākārastanabhārāvanāmitā| navadūrvādalaśyāmā sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā

Bowed down by the weight of breasts shaped like Mount Sumeru and Mandara, dark as a fresh blade of durva grass, adorned with every ornament.

Verse 30 (skanda.2.1.30)

इलया वै पिंगलया सखीभ्यां च समन्विता। ततस्ताभ्यां समानीतं पुष्पाणां निचयं मही

ilayā vai piṁgalayā sakhībhyāṁ ca samanvitā| tatastābhyāṁ samānītaṁ puṣpāṇāṁ nicayaṁ mahī

She was accompanied by her two companions, Ila and Pingala; and the Earth, aided by them, brought a heap of flowers.

Verse 31 (skanda.2.1.31)

श्रीमद्वराहदेवस्य पादमूले विकीर्य च। प्रणम्य देवदेवेशं कृताञ्जलिपुटा स्थिता

śrīmadvarāhadevasya pādamūle vikīrya ca| praṇamya devadeveśaṁ kṛtāñjalipuṭā sthitā

Scattering them at the feet of the glorious Lord Varaha, and bowing to that Lord of Lords, she stood with joined palms.

Verse 32 (skanda.2.1.32)

तां देवीं श्रीवराहोऽपि ह्यालिंग्यांके निधाय च

tāṁ devīṁ śrīvarāho'pi hyāliṁgyāṁke nidhāya ca

Lord Varaha, in turn, embraced that goddess and placed her upon his lap.

Verse 33 (skanda.2.1.33)

पप्रच्छ कुशलं पृथ्वीं प्रीतिप्रवणमानसः

papraccha kuśalaṁ pṛthvīṁ prītipravaṇamānasaḥ

And with a heart inclined in affection, he asked Prithvi, the Earth, of her welfare.

Verse 34 (skanda.2.1.34)

श्रीवराह उवाच। त्वां निवेश्य महीदेवि शेषशीर्षे सुखावहे। लोकं त्वयि निवेश्यैव त्वत्सहायान्धराधरान्। हहागतोऽस्म्यहं देवि किमर्थं त्वमिहागता

śrīvarāha uvāca| tvāṁ niveśya mahīdevi śeṣaśīrṣe sukhāvahe| lokaṁ tvayi niveśyaiva tvatsahāyāndharādharān| hahāgato'smyahaṁ devi kimarthaṁ tvamihāgatā

Sri Varaha said: O goddess of the earth, having set you comfortably upon the head of Shesha, and having established upon you the world together with the mountains that support you, I have just now come here — O goddess, for what reason have you come here?

Verse 35 (skanda.2.1.35)

पृथिव्युवाच। मां समुद्धृत्य पातालात्सहस्रफणशोभिते। रत्नपीठ इवोत्तुंगे सरत्नेऽनन्तमूर्धनि। कृत्वा मां सुस्थिरां देव भूधरान्संनिवेश्य च

pṛthivyuvāca| māṁ samuddhṛtya pātālātsahasraphaṇaśobhite| ratnapīṭha ivottuṁge saratne'nantamūrdhani| kṛtvā māṁ susthirāṁ deva bhūdharānsaṁniveśya ca

Prithvi said: Having lifted me up from the netherworld, and having made me firmly steady upon the lofty, jewel-adorned head of Ananta, beautiful with its thousand hoods like a jewelled throne, and having set the mountains upon me, O Lord -

Verse 36 (skanda.2.1.36)

मद्धारणक्षमान्पुण्यांस्त्वन्मयान्पुरुषोत्तम। तेषु मुख्यान्महाबाहो मदाधारान्वदस्व मे

maddhāraṇakṣamānpuṇyāṁstvanmayānpuruṣottama| teṣu mukhyānmahābāho madādhārānvadasva me

Tell me, O Supreme Person, O mighty-armed one, among the sacred mountains pervaded by you and capable of supporting me, which are foremost and are truly my supports.

Verse 37 (skanda.2.1.37)

श्रीवराह उवाच। सुमेरुर्हिमवान्विंध्यो मन्दरो गंधमादनः। सालग्रामश्चित्रकूटो माल्यवान्पारियात्रकः

śrīvarāha uvāca| sumerurhimavānviṁdhyo mandaro gaṁdhamādanaḥ| sālagrāmaścitrakūṭo mālyavānpāriyātrakaḥ

Sri Varaha said: Sumeru, Himavan, Vindhya, Mandara, Gandhamadana, Salagrama, Chitrakuta, Malyavan, Pariyatra -

Verse 38 (skanda.2.1.38)

महेंद्रो मलयः सह्यः सिंहाद्रिरपि रैवतः। मेरुपुत्रोऽञ्जनो नाम शैलः स्वर्णमयो महान्

maheṁdro malayaḥ sahyaḥ siṁhādrirapi raivataḥ| meruputro'ñjano nāma śailaḥ svarṇamayo mahān

Mahendra, Malaya, Sahya, Simhadri, and also Raivata, and the great golden mountain named Anjana, son of Meru -

Verse 39 (skanda.2.1.39)

एते शैलवराः सर्वे त्वदाधारा वसुन्धरे। ये मया देवसंघैश्च ऋषिसंघैश्च सेविताः

ete śailavarāḥ sarve tvadādhārā vasundhare| ye mayā devasaṁghaiśca ṛṣisaṁghaiśca sevitāḥ

All these excellent mountains are your supports, O Vasundhara, and they are served by hosts of gods and hosts of sages, together with me.

Verse 40 (skanda.2.1.40)

एतेषु प्रवरान्वक्ष्ये तत्त्वतः शृणु माधवि। सालग्रामश्च सिंहाद्रिश्शैलेंद्रो गन्धमादनः

eteṣu pravarānvakṣye tattvataḥ śṛṇu mādhavi| sālagrāmaśca siṁhādriśśaileṁdro gandhamādanaḥ

Among these I shall tell you the foremost in truth — listen, O Madhavi: Salagrama, Simhadri, and the mountain-lord Gandhamadana -

Verse 41 (skanda.2.1.41)

एते शैलवरा देवि दिशं हैमवतीं श्रिताः। दक्षिणस्यां प्रतीतांस्तु वक्ष्ये शैलान्वसुन्धरे

ete śailavarā devi diśaṁ haimavatīṁ śritāḥ| dakṣiṇasyāṁ pratītāṁstu vakṣye śailānvasundhare

These excellent mountains, O goddess, lie toward the Himalayan direction; now I shall tell you, O Vasundhara, of the mountains renowned in the southern direction.

Verse 42 (skanda.2.1.42)

अरुणाद्रिर्हस्तिशैलो गृध्राद्रिर्घटिकाचलः। एते शैलवराः सर्वे क्षीरनद्यास्समीपगाः

aruṇādrirhastiśailo gṛdhrādrirghaṭikācalaḥ| ete śailavarāḥ sarve kṣīranadyāssamīpagāḥ

Arunadri, Hastishaila, Gridhradri, Ghatikachala — all these excellent mountains lie close to the river of milk.

Verse 43 (skanda.2.1.43)

हस्तिशैलादुत्तरतः पंचयोजनमात्रतः। सुवर्णमुखरीनाम नदीनां प्रवरा नदी

hastiśailāduttarataḥ paṁcayojanamātrataḥ| suvarṇamukharīnāma nadīnāṁ pravarā nadī

To the north of Hastishaila, at a distance of just five yojanas, flows the river named Suvarnamukhari, foremost among rivers.

Verse 44 (skanda.2.1.44)

तस्या एवोत्तरे तीरे कमलाख्यं सरोवरम्। तत्तीरे भगवानास्ते शुकस्य वरदो हरिः

tasyā evottare tīre kamalākhyaṁ sarovaram| tattīre bhagavānāste śukasya varado hariḥ

On the northern bank of that river is a lake named Kamala; on its shore dwells the Lord Hari, bestower of boons upon Shuka.

Verse 45 (skanda.2.1.45)

बलभद्रेण संयुक्तः कृष्णो भक्तार्तिनाशनः। वैखानसैर्मुनिगणैर्नित्यमाराधितोऽमलैः

balabhadreṇa saṁyuktaḥ kṛṣṇo bhaktārtināśanaḥ| vaikhānasairmunigaṇairnityamārādhito'malaiḥ

There dwells Krishna, together with Balabhadra, destroyer of his devotees' afflictions, ever worshipped by the stainless hosts of Vaikhanasa sages.

Verse 46 (skanda.2.1.46)

कमलाख्यस्य सरस उत्तरे काननोत्तमे। क्रोशद्वयार्धमात्रे तु हरिचंदनशोभिते। श्रीवेंकटाचलोनाम वासुदेवालयो महान्

kamalākhyasya sarasa uttare kānanottame| krośadvayārdhamātre tu haricaṁdanaśobhite| śrīveṁkaṭācalonāma vāsudevālayo mahān

To the north of the lake called Kamala, in an excellent grove beautified with sandalwood trees, at a distance of just two and a half krosas, stands the great abode of Vasudeva named Sri Venkatachala.

Verse 47 (skanda.2.1.47)

सप्तयोजनविस्तीर्णः शैलेन्द्रो योजनोच्छ्रितः। अस्ति स्वर्णमयो देवि रत्नसानुभृदायतः

saptayojanavistīrṇaḥ śailendro yojanocchritaḥ| asti svarṇamayo devi ratnasānubhṛdāyataḥ

That lord of mountains, seven yojanas in breadth and one yojana in height, is made of gold, O goddess, its long ridges laden with jewels.

Verse 48 (skanda.2.1.48)

इन्द्राद्या दैवतगणा वसिष्ठाद्या मुनीश्वराः। सिद्धाः साध्याश्च मरुतो दानवा दैत्यराक्षसाः। रम्भाद्या अप्सरःसंघा वसन्ति नियतं धरे

indrādyā daivatagaṇā vasiṣṭhādyā munīśvarāḥ| siddhāḥ sādhyāśca maruto dānavā daityarākṣasāḥ| rambhādyā apsaraḥsaṁghā vasanti niyataṁ dhare

Indra and the other hosts of gods, Vasishtha and the other lords of sages, the Siddhas, Sadhyas, Maruts, Danavas, Daityas and Rakshasas, and the hosts of Apsarases headed by Rambha, ever dwell there, O Earth.

Verse 49 (skanda.2.1.49)

तपश्चरंति नागाश्च गरुडाः किन्नरास्तथा। एतैरधिष्ठितास्तत्र सरितः पुण्यदर्शनाः। सरांसि विविधान्यत्र संति दिव्यानि माधवि

tapaścaraṁti nāgāśca garuḍāḥ kinnarāstathā| etairadhiṣṭhitāstatra saritaḥ puṇyadarśanāḥ| sarāṁsi vividhānyatra saṁti divyāni mādhavi

There Nagas practise austerities, and Garudas and Kinnaras as well; the rivers there, sacred to behold, are inhabited by these beings, O Madhavi, and there are many kinds of divine lakes there.

Verse 50 (skanda.2.1.50)

तीर्थानां चैव सर्वेषां शृणुष्व प्रवराणि वै

tīrthānāṁ caiva sarveṣāṁ śṛṇuṣva pravarāṇi vai

Now hear indeed of the foremost among all the sacred fords.

Verse 51 (skanda.2.1.51)

चक्रतीर्थं दैवतीर्थं वियद्गंगा तथैव च। कुमारधारिकातीर्थं पापनाशनमेव च। पाण्डवं नाम तीर्थं च स्वामिपुष्करिणी तथा

cakratīrthaṁ daivatīrthaṁ viyadgaṁgā tathaiva ca| kumāradhārikātīrthaṁ pāpanāśanameva ca| pāṇḍavaṁ nāma tīrthaṁ ca svāmipuṣkariṇī tathā

Chakratirtha, Devatirtha, and likewise Akashaganga, Kumaradharika-tirtha, and Papanashana, the tirtha named Pandava, and likewise Svamipushkarini -

Verse 52 (skanda.2.1.52)

सप्तैतानि वराण्याहुर्नारायणगिरौ शुभे। एतेषु प्रवरा देवि स्वामिपुष्करिणी शुभा

saptaitāni varāṇyāhurnārāyaṇagirau śubhe| eteṣu pravarā devi svāmipuṣkariṇī śubhā

These seven are said to be the finest on the auspicious mountain of Narayana; among these, O goddess, the auspicious Svamipushkarini is the foremost.

Verse 53 (skanda.2.1.53)

अस्यास्तु पश्चिमे तीरं निवसामि त्वया सह। आस्तेऽस्या दक्षिणे तीरं श्रीनिवासो जगत्पतिः

asyāstu paścime tīraṁ nivasāmi tvayā saha| āste'syā dakṣiṇe tīraṁ śrīnivāso jagatpatiḥ

On its western bank I dwell together with you; on its southern bank dwells Srinivasa, the Lord of the universe.

Verse 54 (skanda.2.1.54)

गंगाद्यैः सकलैस्तीर्थैः समा सा सागराम्बरे। त्रैलोक्ये यानि तीर्थानि सरांसि सरितस्तथा। तेषां स्वामित्वमापन्नं धरे स्वामिसरोवरे

gaṁgādyaiḥ sakalaistīrthaiḥ samā sā sāgarāmbare| trailokye yāni tīrthāni sarāṁsi saritastathā| teṣāṁ svāmitvamāpannaṁ dhare svāmisarovare

It is equal to all the sacred fords beginning with the Ganga, O ocean-girdled Earth; whatever tirthas, lakes, and rivers exist in the three worlds, their very lordship has come to rest, O Earth, in the lake of Svami.

Verse 55 (skanda.2.1.55)

स्वामिपुष्करिणीं पुण्यां सेवितुं दिव्यभूधरे। वसन्ति सर्वतीर्थानि तेषां संख्यां वदामि ते

svāmipuṣkariṇīṁ puṇyāṁ sevituṁ divyabhūdhare| vasanti sarvatīrthāni teṣāṁ saṁkhyāṁ vadāmi te

On that divine mountain, all the sacred fords dwell in order to serve the sacred Svamipushkarini; I shall tell you their number.

Verse 56 (skanda.2.1.56)

षट्षष्टिकोटितीर्थानि पुण्येऽस्मिन्भूधरोत्तमे। तेषु चात्यंतमुख्यानि षट् तीर्थानि वसुन्धरे

ṣaṭṣaṣṭikoṭitīrthāni puṇye'sminbhūdharottame| teṣu cātyaṁtamukhyāni ṣaṭ tīrthāni vasundhare

There are sixty-six crore sacred fords upon this most sacred and excellent mountain, O Vasundhara, and among them six tirthas are the most eminent.

Verse 57 (skanda.2.1.57)

पञ्चानां तीर्थराजानां तुम्बो गर्भसमो महान्। गर्भवासभयध्वंसी स्नातानां भूधरोत्तमे

pañcānāṁ tīrtharājānāṁ tumbo garbhasamo mahān| garbhavāsabhayadhvaṁsī snātānāṁ bhūdharottame

Among the five kings of tirthas, Tumba is the great one, equal to the womb, and it destroys, for those who bathe on that excellent mountain, the fear of dwelling in the womb.

Verse 58 (skanda.2.1.58)

धरण्युवाच। षट् तीर्थानि महाबाहो त्वयोक्तानि महीधरे। माहात्म्यं वद तेषां मे यथाकालं यथाविधि। फलानि तेषु स्नातानां नराणां वद भूधर

dharaṇyuvāca| ṣaṭ tīrthāni mahābāho tvayoktāni mahīdhare| māhātmyaṁ vada teṣāṁ me yathākālaṁ yathāvidhi| phalāni teṣu snātānāṁ narāṇāṁ vada bhūdhara

Dharani said: O mighty-armed one, you have spoken of six tirthas on this mountain; tell me their glory in due order and due manner, and tell me, O Bearer of the Earth, the fruits that accrue to men who bathe in them.

Verse 59 (skanda.2.1.59)

श्रीवराह उवाच। नारायणाद्रिमाहात्म्यं वदामि शृणु माधवि

śrīvarāha uvāca| nārāyaṇādrimāhātmyaṁ vadāmi śṛṇu mādhavi

Sri Varaha said: I shall declare the glory of Narayanadri; listen, O Madhavi.

Verse 60 (skanda.2.1.60)

देवाश्च ऋषयश्चैव योगिनः सनकादयः। कृतेंऽजनाद्रिं त्रेतायां नारायणगिरिं तथा

devāśca ṛṣayaścaiva yoginaḥ sanakādayaḥ| kṛteṁ'janādriṁ tretāyāṁ nārāyaṇagiriṁ tathā

The gods, the sages, and the yogis headed by Sanaka called it Anjanadri in the Krita age, and likewise Narayanagiri in the Treta age.

Verse 61 (skanda.2.1.61)

द्वापरे सिंहशैलं च कलौ श्रीवेङ्कटाचलम्। प्रवदन्तीह विद्वांसः परमात्मालयं गिरिम्

dvāpare siṁhaśailaṁ ca kalau śrīveṅkaṭācalam| pravadantīha vidvāṁsaḥ paramātmālayaṁ girim

In Dvapara, Simhashaila, and in Kali, Sri Venkatachala — thus do the learned here name this mountain, the abode of the Supreme Self.

Verse 62 (skanda.2.1.62)

योजनानां सहस्रान्ते द्वीपांतरगतोऽपि वा। यो नमेद्भूधरेन्द्रं तद्दिशमुद्दिश्य भक्तितः। सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति

yojanānāṁ sahasrānte dvīpāṁtaragato'pi vā| yo namedbhūdharendraṁ taddiśamuddiśya bhaktitaḥ| sarvapāpavinirmukto viṣṇulokaṁ sa gacchati

Even one who is a thousand yojanas away, or gone to another continent, if he bows with devotion facing the direction of that lord of mountains, becomes freed from all sin and goes to the world of Vishnu.

Verse 63 (skanda.2.1.63)

तस्मिन्षट्तीर्थमाहात्म्यं यथाकालं वदामि ते

tasminṣaṭtīrthamāhātmyaṁ yathākālaṁ vadāmi te

I shall now tell you, in due order, the glory of the six tirthas upon that mountain.

Verse 64 (skanda.2.1.64)

शृणुष्वावहिता भद्रे सर्वपापप्रणाशनम्। कुभसंस्थे रवौ माघे पौर्णमास्यां महातिथौ

śṛṇuṣvāvahitā bhadre sarvapāpapraṇāśanam| kubhasaṁsthe ravau māghe paurṇamāsyāṁ mahātithau

Listen attentively, O gentle one, to that which destroys all sin: when the sun stands in Kumbha, in the month of Magha, on the great tithi of the full moon -

Verse 65 (skanda.2.1.65)

मघानक्षत्रयुक्तायां भूधरेन्द्रे वसुन्धरे। कुमारधारिकानाम सरसी लोकपावनी

maghānakṣatrayuktāyāṁ bhūdharendre vasundhare| kumāradhārikānāma sarasī lokapāvanī

joined with the Magha constellation — there, on that lord of mountains, O Vasundhara, is the lake named Kumaradharika, purifier of the world.

Verse 66 (skanda.2.1.66)

यत्रास्ते पार्वतीसूनुः कार्तिकेयोऽग्निसंभवः। देवसेनासमायुक्तः श्रीनिवासार्चकोऽमले

yatrāste pārvatīsūnuḥ kārtikeyo'gnisaṁbhavaḥ| devasenāsamāyuktaḥ śrīnivāsārcako'male

Where dwells the son of Parvati, Kartikeya, born of fire, united with Devasena, the immaculate worshipper of Srinivasa.

Verse 67 (skanda.2.1.67)

तस्यां यः स्नाति मध्याह्ने तस्य पुण्यफलं शृणु। गंगादिसर्वतीर्थेषु यः स्नाति नियमाद्धरं। द्वादशाब्दं जगद्धात्रि तत्फलं समवाप्नुयात्

tasyāṁ yaḥ snāti madhyāhne tasya puṇyaphalaṁ śṛṇu| gaṁgādisarvatīrtheṣu yaḥ snāti niyamāddharaṁ| dvādaśābdaṁ jagaddhātri tatphalaṁ samavāpnuyāt

Hear the sacred fruit of one who bathes there at midday: whatever fruit a man obtains, O Sustainer of the world, by bathing for twelve years according to rule in the Ganga and all other tirthas — that same fruit he obtains here.

Verse 68 (skanda.2.1.68)

योऽन्नं ददाति तत्तीर्थे शक्त्या दक्षिणयान्वितम्। स तावत्फलमाप्नोति स्नाने तूक्तं फलं यथा

yo'nnaṁ dadāti tattīrthe śaktyā dakṣiṇayānvitam| sa tāvatphalamāpnoti snāne tūktaṁ phalaṁ yathā

Whoever gives food at that tirtha, according to his ability, together with the sacrificial fee, obtains that same fruit as has been declared for bathing.

Verse 69 (skanda.2.1.69)

मानसंस्थे सवितरि पौर्णमासीतिथौ धरे। उत्तराफाल्गुनीयुक्ते चतुर्थे काल उत्तमे

mānasaṁsthe savitari paurṇamāsītithau dhare| uttarāphālgunīyukte caturthe kāla uttame

When the sun stands in Tula, O Earth, on the tithi of the full moon, joined with the Uttara Phalguni constellation, in the excellent fourth watch of the day -

Verse 70 (skanda.2.1.70)

पंचानामपि तीर्थानां तुंबेऽथ गिरिगह्वरे। यः स्नाति मनुजो देवि पुनर्गर्भे न जायते

paṁcānāmapi tīrthānāṁ tuṁbe'tha girigahvare| yaḥ snāti manujo devi punargarbhe na jāyate

whatever man then bathes, O goddess, at Tumba in the mountain cave, among the five tirthas, he is not born again in a womb.

Verse 71 (skanda.2.1.71)

अग्निवाहस्थिते भानौ चित्रानक्षत्रसंयुते। पूर्णिमाख्ये तिथौ पुण्ये प्रातःकाले तथैव च। आकाशगंगासरिति स्नातो मोक्षमवाप्नुयात्

agnivāhasthite bhānau citrānakṣatrasaṁyute| pūrṇimākhye tithau puṇye prātaḥkāle tathaiva ca| ākāśagaṁgāsariti snāto mokṣamavāpnuyāt

When the sun is in Mesha, joined with the Chitra constellation, on the sacred tithi called Purnima, and likewise in the morning, one who bathes in the river Akashaganga obtains liberation.

Verse 72 (skanda.2.1.72)

वृषभस्थे रवौ राधे द्वादश्यां रविवासरे। शुक्ले वाप्यथ वा कृष्णे पक्षे भौमसमन्विते

vṛṣabhasthe ravau rādhe dvādaśyāṁ ravivāsare| śukle vāpyatha vā kṛṣṇe pakṣe bhaumasamanvite

O Radhe, when the sun is in Vrishabha, on the twelfth tithi, on a Sunday, whether in the bright or dark fortnight, joined with Tuesday -

Verse 73 (skanda.2.1.73)

शुक्ले वाप्यथवा कृष्णे भानुवारेण संयुते। पुष्यनक्षत्रसंयुक्त हस्तर्क्षेण युतेऽपि वा

śukle vāpyathavā kṛṣṇe bhānuvāreṇa saṁyute| puṣyanakṣatrasaṁyukta hastarkṣeṇa yute'pi vā

whether in the bright or dark fortnight, joined with Sunday, joined with the Pushya constellation, or else joined with the Hasta constellation -

Verse 74 (skanda.2.1.74)

तीर्थे पांडवनाम्न्यत्र संगवे स्नाति यो नरः। नेह दुःखमवाप्नोति परत्र सुखमश्नुते

tīrthe pāṁḍavanāmnyatra saṁgave snāti yo naraḥ| neha duḥkhamavāpnoti paratra sukhamaśnute

whatever man bathes at the hour of Sangava in the tirtha here named Pandava obtains no sorrow in this world, and enjoys happiness in the next.

Verse 75 (skanda.2.1.75)

शुक्ले पक्षेऽथ वा कृष्णे यार्कवारेण सप्तमी। पुष्यनक्षत्रसंयुक्ता हस्तर्क्षेण युतापि वा

śukle pakṣe'tha vā kṛṣṇe yārkavāreṇa saptamī| puṣyanakṣatrasaṁyuktā hastarkṣeṇa yutāpi vā

In the bright fortnight or in the dark, the seventh tithi falling on a Sunday, joined with the Pushya constellation, or else joined with the Hasta constellation -

Verse 76 (skanda.2.1.76)

तस्यां तिथौ महाभागे पापनाशनसंज्ञके। तीर्थे यः स्नाति नियमाद्भूधरेन्द्रस्य मस्तके

tasyāṁ tithau mahābhāge pāpanāśanasaṁjñake| tīrthe yaḥ snāti niyamādbhūdharendrasya mastake

on that most fortunate tithi, whoever bathes according to rule at the tirtha named Papanashana upon the summit of that lord of mountains -

Verse 77 (skanda.2.1.77)

कोटिजन्मार्जितैः पापैर्मुच्यते स नरोत्तमः

koṭijanmārjitaiḥ pāpairmucyate sa narottamaḥ

that best of men is freed from the sins accumulated over a crore of births.

Verse 78 (skanda.2.1.78)

शृणु देवि परं गुह्यमनन्ताख्ये महागिरौ। मद्दिव्यालयवायव्ये शिखरे गिरिगह्वरे। देवतीर्थमिति ख्यातं तटाकमतिशोभनम्

śṛṇu devi paraṁ guhyamanantākhye mahāgirau| maddivyālayavāyavye śikhare girigahvare| devatīrthamiti khyātaṁ taṭākamatiśobhanam

Hear, O goddess, a supreme secret: on the great mountain named Ananta, on a peak to the northwest of my divine abode, in a mountain cave, is a most beautiful pool known as Devatirtha.

Verse 79 (skanda.2.1.79)

तस्मिन्पुण्यतमे देवि स्नानकालं वदामि ते

tasminpuṇyatame devi snānakālaṁ vadāmi te

I shall tell you, O goddess, the time for bathing at that most sacred tirtha.

Verse 80 (skanda.2.1.80)

गुरुपुष्ये व्यतीपाते सोमश्रवणके तथा। दिनेष्वेतेषु यः स्नाति तस्य पुण्यफलं शृणु

gurupuṣye vyatīpāte somaśravaṇake tathā| dineṣveteṣu yaḥ snāti tasya puṇyaphalaṁ śṛṇu

On the days of Guru-Pushya, Vyatipata, and likewise Soma-Shravana — hear the sacred fruit of one who bathes on these days.

Verse 81 (skanda.2.1.81)

यानि कानीह पापानि ज्ञानाज्ञानकृतानि च। तानि सर्वाणि नश्यंति देवतीर्थेऽतिपावने

yāni kānīha pāpāni jñānājñānakṛtāni ca| tāni sarvāṇi naśyaṁti devatīrthe'tipāvane

Whatever sins there are here, committed knowingly or unknowingly, all of them are destroyed at the most purifying Devatirtha.

Verse 82 (skanda.2.1.82)

पुण्यान्यपि च वर्धंते देवतीर्थनिमज्जनात। दीर्घमायुरवाप्नोति पुत्रपौत्रसमन्वितः। अन्ते स्वर्गं समासाद्य चन्द्रलोके महीयते

puṇyānyapi ca vardhaṁte devatīrthanimajjanāta| dīrghamāyuravāpnoti putrapautrasamanvitaḥ| ante svargaṁ samāsādya candraloke mahīyate

Merits, too, increase by immersion in Devatirtha; one obtains long life together with sons and grandsons, and at the end, having attained heaven, is honoured in the world of the moon.

Verse 83 (skanda.2.1.83)

तद्दिनेष्वन्नदो देवि यावज्जीवान्नदो भवेत्। अतिगुह्यतमं देवि प्रोक्तं तुभ्यं वसुन्धरे

taddineṣvannado devi yāvajjīvānnado bhavet| atiguhyatamaṁ devi proktaṁ tubhyaṁ vasundhare

One who gives food on those days, O goddess, obtains the fruit of one who gives food for a lifetime. This most secret thing, O goddess, O Vasundhara, has now been told to you.

Verse 84 (skanda.2.1.84)

व्यास उवाच। श्रुत्वाथ पृथिवी देवी प्रीतिप्रवणमानसा। इष्टाभिर्वाग्भिरतुलं तुष्टाव धरणीधरम्

vyāsa uvāca| śrutvātha pṛthivī devī prītipravaṇamānasā| iṣṭābhirvāgbhiratulaṁ tuṣṭāva dharaṇīdharam

Vyasa said: Having heard this, the goddess Earth, her heart inclined with affection, praised the peerless Bearer of the Earth with pleasing words.

Verse 85 (skanda.2.1.85)

धरण्युवाच। नमस्ते देवदेवेश वराहवदनाच्युत। क्षीरसागरसंकाश वज्रशृंग महाभुज

dharaṇyuvāca| namaste devadeveśa varāhavadanācyuta| kṣīrasāgarasaṁkāśa vajraśṛṁga mahābhuja

Dharani said: Salutations to you, O Lord of the Lords of gods, O unfallen one with the face of a boar, O you who resemble the Ocean of Milk, O you of adamantine tusks, O mighty-armed one.

Verse 86 (skanda.2.1.86)

उद्धृतास्मि त्वया देव कल्पादौ सागरांभसः। सहस्रबाहुना विष्णो धारयामि जगन्त्यहम्

uddhṛtāsmi tvayā deva kalpādau sāgarāṁbhasaḥ| sahasrabāhunā viṣṇo dhārayāmi jagantyaham

I was lifted up by you, O Lord, at the beginning of the kalpa, from the waters of the ocean; and, O Vishnu, by your thousand arms I bear the worlds.

Verse 87 (skanda.2.1.87)

अनेकदिव्याभरणयज्ञसूत्रविराजित। अरुणारुणांबरधर दिव्यरत्नविभूषित

anekadivyābharaṇayajñasūtravirājita| aruṇāruṇāṁbaradhara divyaratnavibhūṣita

O you who shine with many divine ornaments and the sacred thread, O wearer of garments reddish as the dawn, O you adorned with divine gems.

Verse 88 (skanda.2.1.88)

उद्यद्भानुप्रतीकाशपादपद्म नमोनमः। बालचंद्राभदंष्ट्राग्रमहाबलपराक्रम

udyadbhānupratīkāśapādapadma namonamaḥ| bālacaṁdrābhadaṁṣṭrāgramahābalaparākrama

O you whose lotus feet resemble the rising sun, salutations again and again to you; O you of great strength and valour, whose tusk-tip gleams like the crescent moon.

Verse 89 (skanda.2.1.89)

दिव्यचन्दनलिप्तांग तप्तकांचनकुण्डल। इन्द्रनीलमणिद्योतिहेमांगदविभूषित

divyacandanaliptāṁga taptakāṁcanakuṇḍala| indranīlamaṇidyotihemāṁgadavibhūṣita

O you whose limbs are anointed with divine sandal-paste, whose earrings are of molten gold, adorned with golden armlets gleaming with sapphires.

Verse 90 (skanda.2.1.90)

वज्रदंष्ट्राग्रनिर्भिन्नहिणयाक्ष महाबल। पुण्डरीकाभिरामाक्ष सामस्वनमनोहर

vajradaṁṣṭrāgranirbhinnahiṇayākṣa mahābala| puṇḍarīkābhirāmākṣa sāmasvanamanohara

O you of great strength who pierced Hiranyaksha with the tip of your adamantine tusk; O you whose eyes are lovely as lotuses, whose voice enchants like the Sama chant.

Verse 91 (skanda.2.1.91)

श्रुतिसीमन्तभूषात्मन्सर्वात्मश्चारुविक्रम। चतुराननशंभुभ्यां वन्दिताऽऽयतलोचन

śrutisīmantabhūṣātmansarvātmaścāruvikrama| caturānanaśaṁbhubhyāṁ vanditā''yatalocana

O you whose very self is the ornament at the parting of the Vedas' hair, O Self of all, of beautiful valour, O long-eyed one, saluted by both four-faced Brahma and Shambhu.

Verse 92 (skanda.2.1.92)

सर्वविद्यामयाकार शब्दातीत नमो नमः। आनंदविग्रहाऽनन्त कालकाल नमोनमः

sarvavidyāmayākāra śabdātīta namo namaḥ| ānaṁdavigrahā'nanta kālakāla namonamaḥ

O you whose form consists of all knowledge, O you beyond speech, salutations again and again; O embodiment of bliss, O Infinite One, O Death of Death, salutations again and again.

Verse 93 (skanda.2.1.93)

इति स्तुत्वाऽचला देवी ववन्दे पादयोर्विभुम्। वन्दमाना समुद्वीक्ष्य देवः फुल्लविलोचनः

iti stutvā'calā devī vavande pādayorvibhum| vandamānā samudvīkṣya devaḥ phullavilocanaḥ

Having praised him thus, the unmoving goddess bowed at the feet of the Lord; and the Lord, beholding her as she bowed, his eyes blossoming with joy -

Verse 94 (skanda.2.1.94)

उद्धृत्य धरणीं देवीमालिलिंगेऽथ बाहुभिः। आघ्राय धरणीवक्त्रं वामांके सन्निवेश्य च

uddhṛtya dharaṇīṁ devīmāliliṁge'tha bāhubhiḥ| āghrāya dharaṇīvaktraṁ vāmāṁke sanniveśya ca

lifted up the goddess Dharani and embraced her with his arms, and, smelling her face, seated her upon his left thigh.

Verse 95 (skanda.2.1.95)

आरुह्य गरुडेशानं जगाम वृषभाचलम्। मुनींद्रैर्नारदाद्यैश्च स्तूयमानो महीपतिः

āruhya garuḍeśānaṁ jagāma vṛṣabhācalam| munīṁdrairnāradādyaiśca stūyamāno mahīpatiḥ

Mounting Garuda, the Lord of the Earth went to Vrishabhachala, praised by the foremost of sages headed by Narada.

Verse 96 (skanda.2.1.96)

स्वामिपुष्करिणीतीरे पश्चिमे लोकपूजिते। आस्ते वराहवदनो मुनीन्द्रैस्तत्र पूजितः। वैखानसैर्महाभागैर्ब्रह्मतुल्यैर्महात्मभिः

svāmipuṣkariṇītīre paścime lokapūjite| āste varāhavadano munīndraistatra pūjitaḥ| vaikhānasairmahābhāgairbrahmatulyairmahātmabhiḥ

On the western bank of Svamipushkarini, worshipped by the world, dwells the boar-faced Lord, worshipped there by the foremost of sages and by the greatly fortunate, great-souled Vaikhanasas equal to Brahma.

Verse 97 (skanda.2.1.97)

व्यास उवाच। तं दृष्ट्वा नारदः सूत मुनीनामुक्तवान्पुरा। तदेतदहमश्रौषं तत्र वै मुनिसंसदि

vyāsa uvāca| taṁ dṛṣṭvā nāradaḥ sūta munīnāmuktavānpurā| tadetadahamaśrauṣaṁ tatra vai munisaṁsadi

Vyasa said: Having seen him, O Suta, Narada once spoke this to the sages, and this indeed I heard there, in the assembly of sages.

Verse 98 (skanda.2.1.98)

यत्पृष्टोऽहं त्वया सूत माहात्म्यं धरणीभृताम्। मया तूक्तं यथावद्धि नारदाच्च पुरा श्रुतम्

yatpṛṣṭo'haṁ tvayā sūta māhātmyaṁ dharaṇībhṛtām| mayā tūktaṁ yathāvaddhi nāradācca purā śrutam

That which you, O Suta, asked me — the glory of the mountains — has been told by me exactly as it was formerly heard from Narada.

Verse 99 (skanda.2.1.99)

य इदं धर्मसंवादमावयोः सूत पावनम्। पठेद्वा देवपुरतो ब्राह्मणानां पुरस्तथा

ya idaṁ dharmasaṁvādamāvayoḥ sūta pāvanam| paṭhedvā devapurato brāhmaṇānāṁ purastathā

Whoever, O Suta, recites this sacred dialogue on dharma between the two of us, whether before the gods or likewise before brahmins,

Verse 100 (skanda.2.1.100)

सर्वेषामपि वर्णानां शृण्वतां भक्तिपूर्वकम्। स प्रतिष्ठामवाप्नोति पुत्रपौत्रैः समन्वितः

sarveṣāmapi varṇānāṁ śṛṇvatāṁ bhaktipūrvakam| sa pratiṣṭhāmavāpnoti putrapautraiḥ samanvitaḥ

or before all the classes listening with devotion, he obtains fame together with sons and grandsons.

Verse 101 (skanda.2.1.101)

शृण्वतामपि सर्वेषां यदिष्टं तद्भविष्यति

śṛṇvatāmapi sarveṣāṁ yadiṣṭaṁ tadbhaviṣyati

And for all who listen, whatever they desire shall come to pass.

Verse 102 (skanda.2.1.102)

सूत उवाच। इति मे भगवान्व्यासः प्रोवाच मुनिसेवितः। यथाश्रुतं मया पूर्वं कृष्णद्वैपायनाद्गुरोः

sūta uvāca| iti me bhagavānvyāsaḥ provāca munisevitaḥ| yathāśrutaṁ mayā pūrvaṁ kṛṣṇadvaipāyanādguroḥ

Suta said: Thus spoke to me the blessed Vyasa, served by sages, exactly as I had earlier heard it from my guru Krishna Dvaipayana.

Verse 103 (skanda.2.1.103)

तत्तथा सर्वमेवात्र मयाप्युक्तं मुनीश्वराः। श्रुत्वा सूतवचस्त्वित्थं ते प्रीतमनसोऽभवन्

tattathā sarvamevātra mayāpyuktaṁ munīśvarāḥ| śrutvā sūtavacastvitthaṁ te prītamanaso'bhavan

O lords of sages, that same thing have I told all of you here; and hearing Suta's words thus, they became glad at heart.

Verse 104 (skanda.2.1.104)

ऋषय ऊचुः। सूत त्वयोक्तं भुवि पर्वतेषु पुण्येषु पुण्यस्य महीधरस्य। माहात्म्यमस्माकमहीन्द्रनाम्नः पापापहं मोक्षफलप्रदायकम्

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ| sūta tvayoktaṁ bhuvi parvateṣu puṇyeṣu puṇyasya mahīdharasya| māhātmyamasmākamahīndranāmnaḥ pāpāpahaṁ mokṣaphalapradāyakam

The sages said: O Suta, you have told us, among the sacred mountains upon the earth, the glory — remover of sin and bestower of the fruit of liberation — of this sacred mountain of ours called Mahendra.

Verse 105 (skanda.2.1.105)

ततो वृषाद्रिं संप्राप्य वराहो धरणीयुतः। किमुक्तवान्धरण्यै स तन्नो ब्रूहि महामते

tato vṛṣādriṁ saṁprāpya varāho dharaṇīyutaḥ| kimuktavāndharaṇyai sa tanno brūhi mahāmate

Then, having reached Vrishadri together with Dharani, what did Lord Varaha say to Dharani? Tell us that, O greatly wise one.
