The Rule for Worship of the Conch

Chapter 136All chaptersChapter 138

Verse 1 (skanda.2.137.1)

brahmovāca taptacakāṁkitaṁ kṛtvā hyātmānamatha dīkṣitam padmākṣatulasīmālaṁ kiṁ phalaṁ brūhi keśava

Brahma said: For one who, marked with the heated discus, has been initiated — what is the fruit of wearing a garland of padmaksha beads or of tulasi? Tell me, O Keshava.

Verse 2 (skanda.2.137.2)

śrībhagavānuvāca tulasīkāṣṭhasaṁbhūtāṁ yo mālāṁ vahate dvijaḥ apya'śauco'pyanācāro māmevaiti na saṁśayaḥ

The Blessed Lord said: The twice-born who wears a garland made of tulasi wood — even if impure or of bad conduct — attains to me alone, without doubt.

Verse 3 (skanda.2.137.3)

dhātrīphalakṛtā mālā tulasīkāṣṭhasaṁbhavā dṛśyate yasya dehe tu sa vai bhāgavato naraḥ

He on whose body is seen a garland of dhatri fruits made from tulasi wood is truly a Bhagavata, a devotee.

Verse 4 (skanda.2.137.4)

tulasīdalajāṁ mālāṁ kaṇṭhasthāṁ vahate tu yaḥ mamottīrṇāṁ viśeṣeṇa sa namasyo divaukasām

Whoever wears round the neck a garland of tulasi leaves, especially one offered to and returned from me, is worthy of homage even from the dwellers of heaven.

Verse 5 (skanda.2.137.5)

tulasīdalajāṁ mālāṁ dhātrīphalakṛtāmapi dadāti pāpināṁ muktiṁ kiṁ punarmama sevinām

A garland of tulasi leaves, or one made of dhatri fruits, grants liberation even to sinners — how much more, then, to my own devotees!

Verse 6 (skanda.2.137.6)

tulasīdalajāṁ mālāṁ mamottīrṇāṁ vahettu yaḥ patrepatre'śvamedhānāṁ daśānāṁ labhate phalam

Whoever wears a garland of tulasi leaves that has been offered to me — for every single leaf he obtains the fruit of ten Ashvamedha sacrifices.

Verse 7 (skanda.2.137.7)

tulasīkāṣṭhasaṁbhūtāṁ yo mālāṁ vahate naraḥ phalaṁ yacchāmyahaṁ vatsa pratyahaṁ dvārakodbhavam

O son, whoever wears a garland made of tulasi wood — I grant him daily the fruit born at Dvaraka.

Verse 8 (skanda.2.137.8)

nivedya bhaktyā māṁ mālāṁ tulasīkāṣṭhasaṁbhavām vahate yo naro bhaktyā tasya vai nāsti pātakam

Whoever offers to me with devotion a garland made of tulasi wood, and wears it with devotion — for him there is no sin left whatsoever.

Verse 9 (skanda.2.137.9)

sadā prītamanāstasya ahaṁ prāṇavaro hi saḥ tulasīkāṣṭhasaṁbhūtāṁ yo mālāṁ vahate naraḥ prāyaścittaṁ na tasyā'sti nā'śaucaṁ tasya vigrahe

My mind is ever pleased with him; he is dearer to me than life itself. Whoever wears a garland of tulasi wood has no need of expiation, nor is there ever impurity in his body.

Verse 10 (skanda.2.137.10)

tulasīkāṣṭhasaṁbhūtaṁ śirasaḥ kāṣṭhabhūṣaṇam bāhau kare ca martyasya dehe yasya sa me priyaḥ

Whoever bears on his body — on the head as a wooden ornament, on the arm, or in the hand — something made of tulasi wood, is dear to me.

Verse 11 (skanda.2.137.11)

tulasīkāṣṭhamālābhirbhūṣitaḥ puṇyamācaret pitṝṇāṁ devatānāṁ ca puṇyaṁ koṭiguṇaṁ bhavet

Adorned with garlands of tulasi wood, one who performs meritorious acts obtains, for both ancestors and gods, a crore-fold merit.

Verse 12 (skanda.2.137.12)

tulasīkāṣṭhamālāṁ tu pretarājasya dūtakāḥ dṛṣṭvā naśyaṁti dūreṇa vātoddhūtaṁ yathā dalam

Seeing the garland of tulasi wood, even the messengers of the king of the dead flee far away, like a leaf scattered by the wind.

Verse 13 (skanda.2.137.13)

yadgṛhe tulasīkāṣṭhaṁ patraṁ śuṣkamathā''rdrakam bhavaṁti tadgṛhe naiva pāpaṁ saṁkramate kalau

In whatever house there is tulasi wood or leaf, whether dry or moist, sin never enters that house, even in the Kali age.

Verse 14 (skanda.2.137.14)

tulasī kāṣṭhamālābhirbhūṣito rbhramate bhuvi duḥsvapnaṁ durnimittaṁ ca na bhayaṁ śātravaṁ kvacit

One adorned with garlands of tulasi wood who wanders the earth is never touched by bad dreams, ill omens, or fear of enemies.

Verse 15 (skanda.2.137.15)

dhārayaṁti na ye mālāṁ haitukāḥ pāpabuddhayaḥ narakānna nivartaṁte dagdhāḥ kopāgninā mama

Those wicked-minded skeptics who do not wear the garland, burnt by the fire of my wrath, never return from hell.

Verse 16 (skanda.2.137.16)

tasmāddhāryā prayatnena mālā tulasisaṁbhavā padmākṣanirmitā bhaktyā phalairdhātryā supuṇyadā

Therefore one should wear, with effort, a garland born of tulasi, or one made with devotion of padmaksha beads or dhatri fruits — a most meritorious garland.

Verse 17 (skanda.2.137.17)

tadūrdhvapuṁḍraśaṁkhādyairyuktastulasimūlake sandhyopāstyādikaṁ kuryātkuśapāṇirhiṁ māṁ smaran

Joined with the upward mark, the conch and the rest, at the root of the tulasi, kusha grass in hand, one should perform the sandhya rites and the rest, remembering me.

Verse 18 (skanda.2.137.18)

kṛtasandhyādiko bhaktastataḥ saṁpūjayecca mām guruścettatra varteta ādau gatvā namedgurum

Having performed the sandhya rites, the devotee should then worship me. If a guru is present there, he should first go and bow to him.

Verse 19 (skanda.2.137.19)

kiṁciddattvopāyanaṁ ca daṇḍavatpraṇamenmudā ācamyaikāgramanasā pūjāmaṇḍapamāviśet

Having offered some small gift, he should prostrate joyfully like a rod; then, with one-pointed mind, having sipped water, he should enter the pavilion of worship.

Verse 20 (skanda.2.137.20)

upaviśyā''sane ramye kṛṣṇājinakuśottare samyakpadmāsanāsīno bhūtaśuddhiṁ samācaret

Seated on a lovely seat of black antelope-skin spread with kusha grass, sitting well in the lotus posture, he should perform the purification of the elements.

Verse 21 (skanda.2.137.21)

prāṇāyāmatrayaṁ kṛtvā mantreṇa ca jiteṁdriyaḥ udaṅmukhastataḥ kṛtvā hṛtpaṁkajamanuttamam vikāsaṁ tasya kurvīta vijñānaraviṇā hṛdi

Having performed the threefold pranayama with the mantra, senses conquered, facing north, he should then cause his most excellent heart-lotus to bloom in the heart, by the sun of knowledge.

Verse 22 (skanda.2.137.22)

karṇikāyāṁ nyaseccārkaṁ śaśinaṁ cāgnimeva ca trayaṁ trayātmake tasmiściṁtayedvaiṣṇavo naraḥ nānāratnamayaṁ pīṭhaṁ teṣāmupari vinyaset

In its pericarp he should place the sun, the moon, and fire; the Vaishnava should contemplate these three within that threefold seat, and above them set a throne made of various gems.

Verse 23 (skanda.2.137.23)

tasminmṛduślakṣṇataraṁ bālārkasadṛśadyuti aṣṭaiśvaryadalaṁ padmaṁ mantrākṣaramayaṁ nyaset

On it he should place a lotus, exceedingly soft and smooth, radiant like the rising sun, with eight petals of divine prosperity, formed of the letters of the mantra.

Verse 24 (skanda.2.137.24)

tasmindevaṁ samāsīnaṁ koṭiśītāṁśusannibham caturbhujaṁ mahāpadmaśaṁkhacakragadādharam

On it he should visualize the Lord seated, resembling a crore moons, four-armed, bearing the great lotus, conch, discus and mace—

Verse 25 (skanda.2.137.25)

padmapatraviśālākṣaṁ sarvalakṣaṇalakṣitam śrīvatsakaustubhoraskaṁ pītavastrānvitaṁ ca mām

—with large eyes like lotus petals, marked with every auspicious sign, the Shrivatsa mark and Kaustubha jewel upon his chest, clad in yellow garments — that is, myself—

Verse 26 (skanda.2.137.26)

tulasīkomaladalavanamālāvibhūṣitam koṭibālārkasadṛśaṁ kāntaṁ divyaśriyā saha

—adorned with a garland of soft tulasi leaves, resplendent like a crore rising suns, beautiful together with divine Shri—

Verse 28 (skanda.2.137.28)

sarvalakṣaṇalakṣiṇyā samāśliṣṭatanuṁ śivam evaṁ dhyātvā japenmaṁtraṁ samāhitamanāḥ śuciḥ

—and his auspicious form embraced by her who bears every auspicious sign. Having thus meditated, one should recite the mantra, composed in mind and pure.

Verse 29 (skanda.2.137.29)

sahasraṁ śatavāraṁ vā yathāśakti japenmanum manasaivā'rcanaṁ kṛtvā tato vidhivadācaret

One should recite the mantra a thousand times or a hundred times, as far as one's strength allows; having thus performed mental worship, he should then proceed with the outer rite according to rule.

Verse 30 (skanda.2.137.30)

saṁpradāyā'nurodhena śaṁkhaṁ sthāpya mamāgrataḥ dūrvāṁkuraiśca puṣpaiśca gaṁdhodena ca pūritam

In accordance with tradition, he should set before me a conch filled with sprouts of durva grass, flowers, and scented water.

Verse 31 (skanda.2.137.31)

dakṣiṇe gaṁdhapuṣpāṇāṁ pātraṁ sthāpya ca deśikaiḥ vāmabhāge nyasetkuṁbhaṁ vastrapūtaṁ suvāsitam

On the right, the teacher should place a vessel of scent and flowers; on the left he should set a water-pot, strained through cloth and well-scented.

Verse 32 (skanda.2.137.32)

purato mama ghaṁṭāṁ ca dikṣu dīpānniyojayet anyatsarvaṁ sādhanaṁ ca yathāsthāneṣu vinyaset

Before me he should place a bell, and set lamps in the several directions; all the other requisites of worship should be arranged in their proper places.

Verse 33 (skanda.2.137.33)

arghyapādyā''camanīyamadhuparkasya kāraṇāt vinyasetpurato mahyaṁ catvāryamatrakāṇi vai

For the arghya, padya, achamaniya, and madhuparka, he should place before me four small vessels.

Verse 34 (skanda.2.137.34)

siddhārthā'kṣatapuṣpāṇi kuśāgraṁ tilacaṁdanam phalaṁ yavāścaturvaktra arghyapātre viniḥkṣipet

O four-faced one, white mustard seed, unbroken rice, flowers, kusha-tips, sesame, sandal, fruit and barley — these should be placed in the arghya vessel.

Verse 35 (skanda.2.137.35)

dūrvā viṣṇupadī śyāmā padmaṁ caiva caturthakam pādyapātre nyasetputra deśiko mama tuṣṭaye

Durva grass, the Vishnu-foot flower, a dark flower, and the lotus as fourth — the priest should place these, O son, in the padya vessel, for my satisfaction.

Verse 36 (skanda.2.137.36)

kaṁkolaṁ ca lavaṁgaṁ ca phalaṁ mālatisaṁbhavam kuryādvai śraddhayā putra pātra ācamanīyake

Kankola, cloves, and the fruit born of the malati creeper — one should, with faith, O son, place these in the vessel for achamaniya.

Verse 37 (skanda.2.137.37)

gavyaṁ payo dadhi madhu ghṛtaṁ khaṁḍa samanvitam madhuparkasya pātre vai dadyādvai śraddhayā'rcakaḥ

Cow's milk, curd, honey, and ghee, together with sugar — the faithful worshipper should offer these in the vessel of madhuparka.

Verse 38 (skanda.2.137.38)

uktānāṁ dravyajātīnāmalābhe patrapuṣpayoḥ tattadbhāvanayā kuryātsarvadā vidhikovidaḥ

If the aforesaid substances, or the leaves and flowers, cannot be obtained, the one skilled in ritual should always substitute them through mental visualization alone.

Verse 39 (skanda.2.137.39)

karanyāsaṁ tataḥ kuryādaṁganyāsaṁ tathaiva ca paṁcāṁgaṁ vā ṣaḍaṁgaṁ vā vinyasetsaṁpradāyataḥ

Then he should perform the placing of hands and likewise the placing on the limbs; he should perform the five-limbed or six-limbed nyasa according to tradition.

Verse 40 (skanda.2.137.40)

mamā'nusmaraṇaṁ kāryamātmānaṁ matsamaṁ smaret pūjāraṁbhe caturvaktraṁ maṁgalaṁ tu paṭhennaraḥ

One should call me constantly to mind, and should meditate on oneself as one with me. At the start of the worship, O four-faced one, a person should recite an auspicious verse.

Verse 41 (skanda.2.137.41)

atha saṁpūjayecchaṁkhaṁ pāṁcajanyaṁ mama priyam yasya saṁpūjanādvatsa ānaṁdaḥ paramo mama śaṁkhasya pūjane vatsa maṁtrānetānudīrayet

He should then worship my beloved conch, Panchajanya — O son, from whose worship arises my supreme joy. In worshipping the conch, O son, one should utter these mantras—

Verse 42 (skanda.2.137.42)

tvaṁ purā sāgarotpanno viṣṇunā vidhṛtaḥ kare nirmitaḥ sarvadevaiśca pāṁcajanya namo'stu te

'You were born of old from the ocean, held in hand by Vishnu, fashioned by all the gods — O Panchajanya, salutation to you.'

Verse 43 (skanda.2.137.43)

tava nādena jīmūtā vitrasaṁti surā'surāḥ śaśāṁkā'yutadīptābha pāṁcajanya namo'stu te

'By your sound the clouds tremble, and gods and demons alike are struck with fear; radiant as ten thousand moons — O Panchajanya, salutation to you.'

Verse 44 (skanda.2.137.44)

garbhā devārinārīṇāṁ vilīyaṁte sahasradhā tava nādena pātāle pāṁcajanya namo'stu te

'The wombs of the enemies-of-the-gods' wives dissolve a thousandfold, even in the netherworld, at your sound — O Panchajanya, salutation to you.'

Verse 45 (skanda.2.137.45)

darśanenaiva śaṁkhasya kiṁ punaḥ sparśane kṛte vilayaṁ yāṁti pāpāni himavadbhāskarodaye

By the mere sight of the conch — how much more, then, when touched — sins melt away, just as frost melts away at the rising of the sun.

Verse 46 (skanda.2.137.46)

natvā śaṁkhaṁ kare dhṛtvā maṁtrairebhistu vaiṣṇavaḥ yaḥ snāpayati māṁ bhaktyā tasya puṇyamanaṁtakam

Bowing, and holding the conch in hand with these very mantras, the Vaishnava who bathes me with devotion — his merit becomes endless.

Verse 47 (skanda.2.137.47)

suvāsitena tailena kuryādabhyaṁjanaṁ tataḥ kastūryā caṁdanenaiva kuryādudvartanādikam

He should then anoint the image with scented oil, and perform the massage-anointing with musk and sandal.

Verse 48 (skanda.2.137.48)

sugaṁdhavāsitaistoyaiḥ snāpya maṁtrayutaiḥ śubhaiḥ arghyaṁ dattvā tato vatsa pādyamācamanīyakam madhuparkaṁ tato dadyādatha sarvopacārakān

Having bathed the image with fragrant, mantra-accompanied waters, O son, he should then offer arghya, padya, achamaniya, then madhuparka, and thereafter all the other rites of hospitality.

Verse 49 (skanda.2.137.49)

vastrairābharaṇairdivyairalaṁkṛtya yathāvidhi puṣpaiḥ saṁpūjayetpīṭhaṁ tatra devaṁ nidhāya ca

Having adorned the deity with garments and divine ornaments according to rule, he should worship the throne with flowers, and, having placed the deity there—

Verse 50 (skanda.2.137.50)

vastrā'laṁkāragaṁdhādīnarpayecchraddhayā mama naivedyaṁ vividhaṁ dadyātpāyasā'pūpamiśritam sakarpūraṁ ca tāṁbūlaṁ bhaktyā caiva nivedayet

—he should offer garments, ornaments, scent and the rest to me with faith. He should offer various naivedya mixed with payasa and cakes, and offer betel with camphor, with devotion.

Verse 51 (skanda.2.137.51)

surabhīṇi ca puṣpāṇi bhaktyā samyaṅnivedayet dhūpaṁ daśāṁgamaṣṭāṁgaṁ dīpaṁ ca sumanoharam

He should duly offer fragrant flowers with devotion, and offer incense of ten or eight ingredients, and a most lovely lamp.

Verse 52 (skanda.2.137.52)

pariṇīya praṇamyātha stutvā stutibhirādarāt śāyayitvā tu paryaṁke magalārghyaṁ nivedayet

Having circumambulated, bowed, and then praised with hymns respectfully, having laid the deity to rest upon a couch, he should finally offer the concluding auspicious arghya.
